Women hockey players hope to score new Guinness World Record in non-stop game and raise funds for cystic fibrosis

Games stretching into overtime have long been a part of hockey, but never for a period of time as long as organizers behind an upcoming game are shooting for.

On Aug. 26, a total of 40 women will take a collective deep breath before hitting the ice at Canlan Ice Sports Burnaby 8 Rinks, their de facto home for the next 10 days as they attempt to set a new Guinness World Record for playing the longest hockey game while also raising funds and awareness for the Canadian Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

“We’ve got about 35 women so far,” said Longest Game 4 CF spokesperson Vallerie Skelly. “We’d like to get at least 50 signed players, because stuff can happen over the winter. They could get injured playing or get pregnant, who knows what could happen?”

The current record – a whopping 241 hours and 21 minutes – was set nearly three years ago by men playing outdoors at the northern Alberta homestead of the Edmonton Oilers’ in-house optometrist, Brent Saik.

The women are hoping to beat them at their own game by precisely 65 minutes. The extra minutes were chosen specifically as an homage to late New Westminster resident Eva Markvoort.

Assessed property in New Westminster is worth $12.352 billion this year, according to B.C. Assessment’s 2011 assessment roll.

Last year’s assessment roll put New Westminster’s total property values at $11.278 billion, meaning there has been an increase of more than nine per cent over last year The overall increase in assessment values is about four per cent more than expected, according to real estate agent Adam Goss.

“It’s much higher than anticipated,” Goss, an agent with Park Georgia Realty, who sells in New Westminster and Burnaby.

But he said the higher assessments wouldn’t necessarily make an impact on buyers.

The effect of the increased property taxes, due to higher assessments, is minimal, he said.

The cost of the property taxes is usually included in the mortgage, Goss pointed out.

“If you’ve got someone who’s close (to buying), I don’t know that it’ll make or break (the deal),” he said. “It comes down to a matter of a few thousand.”

The property tax increase might affect retired couples living on a fixed income he said, but probably won’t affect the market. Aside from increased property taxes, Goss said he didn’t think the assessments would affect property sales.

Civic centre: bringing the outside in

ew Westminster’s future civic centre is being designed in a way to merge indoor and outdoor public

spaces.

The multiuse civic centre will be built in the 700-block Columbia Street, stretching from Begbie Street to Eighth Street.

Conceptual drawings show that the lobby will be canted in from the street and will wrap around the two anchor functions – a theatre and a museum.

“It’s like the street is pushing into the building … and opening into the lobby,” said architect Roger Hughes about the design. “The sense of public realm is extending into the building.”

Hughes, who was hired by the City of New Westminster to design the civic centre, said the building’s lobby THERESA MCMANUS is intended to be a public space.

“The public space is a special place and a program unto itself.”

Coun. Jaimie McEvoy said he likes the design and likes that the lobby is being viewed as one space. He sees an opportunity for it to be used for events such as the Royal City Show and Shine and Santa Claus Parade.

“I see good potential there for the kinds of integration.”

Mark Thompson, an architect hired by the Uptown Property Group to design the office component of the building, said the lobby could be used as a space for different programs. It will also act as a “place to be” for residents.

“You’ll look into the space,” he said.

“You’ll get a sense of the space going right into the building.”

Looking into the lobby, a canyon effect is created by extending the open space further into the building. A skylight will bring natural light into the area.

“We are really about 30 per cent through our schematic design process, which will conclude at the end of February,” Thompson said.

Lisa Spitale, the city’s director of development services, said the architects’ presentation to council was to ensure that council is supportive of the building’s design and how it fits on the street.

Because it will be an iconic building on the street for years to come, she said it needs to be a building that fits on the street.

“The preliminary drawings reflect overall massing of the building – essentially that there are two anchors – the museum at the Eighth and Columbia end, and the theatre at the other end, at Begbie and Columbia, with the conference centre space tying the two together,” she later told The Record. “(The) presentation was

Coun. Betty McIntosh said council has already received some feedback from people who don’t believe the design fits within the context of the Columbia Street historic district. ughes said the building has a scale and “vertical cadence” that will relate to Columbia Street.

“It’s really a matter of scale and materials and details,” Hughes said about making sure the building isn’t out of place in the historic district.

Details, such as windows in the fine arts portion of the building and the type of materials to be used on the exterior, have yet to be shown on architectural drawings.

“I like what I am seeing,” said McEvoy.

“I look forward to seeing what is coming next.”

Coun. Bill Harper questioned whether the building should even attempt to be sympathetic toward heritage or should instead emphasize design components such as the building’s glass front.

“No matter what you do, people are going to knock you about heritage,” said Coun. Bob Osterman. “You don’t want to make a poor heritage replica.”

“I believe the two ends should be different,” he said. “They will have two different functions. … They could be sympathetic of course and relate well.”

Coun. Jonathan Cote liked the idea of breaking up the building with different materials, rather than having one monolithic type of structure. He believes the theatre/convention centre’s exterior walls provides an opportunity to do something interesting.

Thompson said the building has been rotated on the site to take advantage of views and views down the street.

“Primarily it was to allow the podium to respond to this idea of welcome, to pull the street into the building,” he said. “You were able to open this building up.”

Coun. Lorrie Williams said she was horrified at the idea architects would design a square box in order to maximize space but likes what she sees.

“I was just delighted,” she said. “I think the rotation is a brilliant move, to make things feel like you’re being drawn into the building.”

The City of New Westminster is using gaming funds to build its portion of the $35-million civic centre that will be about 92,000 square feet. The Uptown Property Group will build an office tower of up to 130,000 square feet on top of the civic

centre.

“The office tower is almost like a big lantern on top,” Hughes said. “It’s almost like a sign. It will be this glowing lantern.

It works together. The whole composition is one composition. We have tried to create one composition for the entire thing.”

Architects hired by the city and the developer have been collaborating on the design for the project. hompson said a restaurant will be located at the corner of Eighth and Columbia streets, as it provides an opportunity to create a more active and vibrant streetscape at that location.

According to Hughes, the civic centre is being angled in such a way that people will be able to have views of the Fraser River when they’re at various spots inside the building.

He said the building will be angled in such a way that it captures views of Hyack Square and the Fraser River.

In addition to the lobby and a restaurant, the first floor will include conference areas and breakout rooms for smaller meetings. Going up one-half level to the mezzanine, people will be able to access the gift shop and city archives.

The second level of the building includes theatre space, facilities for the theatre (storage, green room, dressing rooms), museums, the Lacrosse Hall of Fame, and museum and art exhibit space.

assessed as having similar property values, he said, but the sales value would depend on things like upkeep and whether or not one of the homes has been renovated.

“Renos are not included in the assessments,” he pointed out.

What would most affect the market right now, Goss said, is if mortgage rates increased.

The new comparison tool on the B.C. Assessment website, where home owners can compare their assessment with neighbours’ homes online, might help his clients better understand the value of their home, Goss said.

“It’s an educational tool,” he said.

Property values in the Lower Mainland saw a big increase in the 2011 assessment.

Property values across the province this year totalled more than $1 trillion, a first for B.C. That comes to an eight per cent increase provincewide over last year.

Burnaby residences increased in value by 12.7 per cent, while Vancouver’s increased by 12.17 per cent.

But the largest increase in the province was in Richmond, where residential property values went up by 17.14 per cent.

However, much of the rest of the province, outside of the Lower Mainland, did not increase by nearly as much.

In some areas, such as Whistler and the Okanagan, property values either didn’t change, or decreased. Whistler saw a decrease in residential property values of 2.06 per cent.

Homeowners can check online at www.bcassessment. bc.ca, and click on e-valueBC under Public for the value assessment on their home and neighbouring properties.

B.C. Assessment mailed out assessment notices with more information on Dec. 31.

B.C. Assessment shows the assessed value of most of B.C.’s 1.9 million residential properties as of July 1 of the past year, but the actual value of the home depends on the current market. Assessment appraisers consider size, age, quality, condition and location of individual properties when assessing the value.

For those wishing to appeal their assessment, the deadline is Jan. 31.

(The phrase “65 roses” itself is a common shorthand in the cystic fibrosis community due to a young boy’s nowfamous mispronunciation of his medical problem.)

“I was already starting to plan the game after a friend of mine had died from cystic fibrosis,” said Skelly, who never had a chance to meet the woman whose image adorns Longest Game 4 CF posters. The former Miss New Westminster passed away last March after waiting in vain for a donor for a second double-lung transplant.

“The local cystic fibrosis office, when I was telling them the idea, said they had someone who might be our spokesperson, and that was Eva,” she said. “After she passed, we spoke with her family and asked if we could use her image because we knew she really wanted to continue her legacy, that was something that was really important to her, and she had already done all the legwork for us in getting (cystic fibrosis) on people’s radar.”

Skelly, who currently plays centre for the Thunder A in the local Duffers Hockey League, said the attempt wouldn’t be possible without the generosity of Canlan Ice Sports, who will not only be donating one of their six NHL-sized rinks for 10 days straight but even the continuous services of a Zamboni driver.

“I thought at first that it would be really easy to get ice at that time of year because it is between hockey seasons but no, they have camps running through the whole summer,” said Skelly with a laugh. “It was a really big deal for them to give us that ice time for that long and someone who can be

there 24 hours a day to make sure the ice is always healthy.”

While the details are still being ironed out, she said the plan is for players to sleep and cook food in RVs when they’re not on the ice.

Each team will have 20 per side, and there will be no switching teams.

The group will be holding hourly information sessions for interested players, volunteers and potential sponsors on Jan. 19 starting at 6 p.m. at 8 Rinks, located at 6501 Sprott St. Goalies, as always, are particularly needed.

Come election time, the Canadian public should bear this in mind.

Don’t decide taxes by popular vote IN THE HOUSE KEITH BALDREY

T

he candidates for the leadership of the B.C. Liberal party have offered a smorgasbord of policies, although none of them qualifies as a new “big” idea.

But one of the promises put forth by one of the candidates has the potential of causing serious problems if it’s ever repeated.

I’m referring to George Abbott’s promise to use the upcoming HST referendum to also determine the fate of the carbon tax. Setting tax policy via a referendum is a bad, bad idea.

If you don’t believe me, check out what’s going on in places like California or Arizona. They are just two of many states that have used referendums to greatly hamper (or even eliminate) the abilities of state governments to raises taxes to meet rising demands for services.

As a result, states are finding themselves slashing services in such areas as K-12 education, post-secondary education, municipal services and public sector wages. States are teetering on the edge of bankruptcy, and many have simply refused to pay creditors (i.e. individuals and companies contracted to do work on behalf of government).

The financial mess south of the

border has much to do with the recent recession, of course, but its roots extend back to the notorious Proposition 13 passed by California voters in the 1970s.

That referendum enshrined in state law a requirement that any new tax had to have the support of two-thirds of the electorate in a referendum. In other words, it made it impossible for a state government to raise taxes because the bar was set too high.

Other states have since passed similar laws and the result is the financial meltdown we are seeing today. The people most hurt by this tax revolt are, naturally, the most vulnerable: the poor, the disabled and the young.

Tax revolts are tinged with populism, of course, but they are the philosophical offspring of right-wing conservativism.

Tax measures should be set by a government duly elected by the people.

Of course, Abbott is not proposing anything like Proposition 13. But B.C. voters will now have two kicks at the anti-tax can, and that may set a precedent that may prove seductive to future politicians and governments.

As demands for health care, education, higher wages and infrastructure continue to climb, more and more revenues have to be found – either through taxes or user-pay models, or spending cuts elsewhere. Many people simply can’t connect the dots when it comes to taxes and services. They simplistically think that cutting things like the salaries of politicians will provide the money to ◗Taxes Page 7

Cost increase will hurt taxpayers

Dear Editor:

Re: Developers will pay more to build in city, The Record, Jan. 5. Your story on increasing New Westminster development cost charges (DCC) fails to capture the magnitude of the increase.

DCCs in Queensborough are increasing almost 100 per cent, and in New Westminster proper this tax on property is increasing 600 per cent.

DCCs are a tax on the property beneath new homes and commercial spaces. This tax is ultimately paid by new home buyers and businesses that purchase new office or commercial space.

The fact that the remaining home buyers in Port Royal will pay an additional $1 million through this increased tax on property does not capture the reality that Port Royal Developments Inc. has already paid several million dollars in DCCs and spent tens of millions of dollars on building parks, riverfront walkways, roads and bridges at Port Royal.

The new DCC increase marks the third time new Queensborough residents will be asked to pay for the infrastructure provided at Port Royal.

The city’s new DCCs will significantly reduce the affordability of homes, office space and commercial space. Given that New Westminster is a geographically small city with established infrastructure, the new DCC rates are unreasonably high and will discourage development in the city.

In his correspondence, Mr. Murray makes a number of statements that are incorrect.

The sale of bottled water in New Westminster schools is not an expense to local taxpayers. It is a source of recurring revenue as the school board receives a portion of the proceeds from each sale.

Contrary to what Mr. Murray writes, the “major shift across this continent” related to bottled water is a rejection of bottled water ban motions.

Over the last 2.5 years, more than 105 local governments across Canada, including municipalities, school boards and colleges and universities, have rejected efforts to ban the sale of the product in their premises while just 35 have approved same over the last 5.5 years.

Beyond its irrelevance to Canada, Mr. Murray’s interpretation of the World Bank’s view of the availability of water in the future is simply wrong, as is his understanding of Fraser Health medical health officer and school medical officer Nadine Loewen’s position on bottled water and the specific direction about this matter given New Westminster school board staff by trustees last year.

Boys aren’t ‘defective girls’

Dear Editor:

Re: Boys lag behind girls in New West schools, The Record, Jan. 5.

I read with interest Niki Hope’s article.

While specific data from the report she mentions was not listed, her article pro-

vided some insight to a serious topic. Like many, I have become concerned that boys may not be getting a fair shake in our schools and in our culture. Of U.S. parents in fertility clinics, 70 per cent of couples select girls.

Depending on the province, between 60 to 70 per cent of newly enrolled students in Canadian universities are women; and across the board, even in math and science, boys are showing poorer outcomes in elementary and secondary school.

I can not recall the last time a male youth was highlighted by either of our community papers for a non-sports event.

Have you noticed how men and fathers are portrayed in TV commercials and TV shows? Why is this? Is it the decline of the male role model in the family? A genetic change in the makeup of humans?

Reduction in the quality of available snakes and snails and puppy-dog tails?

I don’t know, but I suspect some of it has been a change in teaching and evaluation methods in school. The way we teach children has changed and has subtly impacted the expectations of teachers and parents so traits that tend to be more common in girls are “the gold standard” and boys are just treated as “defective girls” (as one Newsweek article put it).

The values of mastery, competition, hardihood and enthusiasm are not a priority.

Sitting quietly for long periods, however, and being able to communicate collaboratively are rewarded. I am sure this phenomenon is managed well by some teachers, but some educators believe that this demand on boys to behave like “little ladies” has resulted in dismal statistics for boys, who are almost twice as likely to be ◗Boys Page 8

take care of the rising demands of society.

So it’s easy for them to simply and enthusiastically vote “no” in a referendum to any proposal to raise taxes, even while they demand more and more things from government.

One of Abbott’s leadership rivals, Christy Clark, has rightly called him on this idea.

To his credit, Abbott appears to have the most extensive and thoughtful platform of any of the candidates. But if he ultimately wins the leadership, I hope he confines the tax-by-referendum idea to a one-timeonly occurrence. ◗ A lot of observers were quick to write off NDP MLA Harry Lali as a serious leadership candidate,

but I think he has the potential to have a significant impact on the race and on the party’s future as well.

While I don’t think he stands a good chance of actually winning the contest, Lali has signalled he’s prepared to play rough and engage in some serious hand-to-hand combat with people.

As a veteran MLA and former cabinet minister, Lali cannot simply be ignored by the party’s hierarchy. In fact, Lali says he wants to take down what he considers to be the “establishment” of the party.

Presumably, he’s referring to people like party president Moe Sihota, provincial secretary Jan O’Brien, B.C. Federation of Labour

president Jim Sinclair, and those in the NDP caucus who have been calling the shots for years.

Again, I don’t think he’s going to necessarily be successful in his quest, but if he pushes the theme hard enough things could get very, very ugly indeed within the NDP. Rather than a so-called healing process, the leadership race may end up being an all-out war pitting faction against faction. And perhaps that’s just what the party needs. A lot of former allies in the party are now bitter enemies, and until they deal with their internal demons, they stand little chance of forming government.

suspended or drop out, make up most of the special education programs and account for the vast majority of ADHD diagnoses. The less hospitable our schools and institutions are to boys and men, the more they will believe their participation is not a priority, and the same is true for girls and women. I truly hope we get a clearer picture on why this is and what can be done to correct it.

This issue is more of a hot topic each year with countless new studies and articles building on the work of Dr. Lionel Tiger, Dr. Michael Thompson and B.C. educator-author Barry MacDonald. Thank you to Niki Hope for bringing this to light in a local context. I look forward to more.

Bottled water still needed Dear Editor:

Re: Time to ban plastic water bottles, Letters to the editor, The Record, Jan. 5.

I was very pleased to see students taking an interest in their environment and taking the time to write a letter to the editor setting out their thoughts. I, too, am a huge proponent of drinking and using our wonderful clean tap water – there is none better in the world. However, I must retell of an incident relayed to me from one of my children, who attends New Westminster Secondary School, a day or so after the letter appeared in the newspaper.

While in attendance at science class, a teacher filled a beaker with tap water.

The water had a yellowish tinge to it, and a student said something along the lines of “having tea.” The teacher went on to explain to the class the reason the water

was yellow was because the copper pipes were so old and corroded that the copper was leaching into the water and that he did not recommend that the students drink this water.

Chances are that all the pipes in the school are about the same age, so this yellowish tinge occurrence would not be restricted to the science lab. Likely it would not be noticeable when bending to take a drink from a water fountain. Further, public water fountains are not always the most sanitary or appealing ways of getting a drink of water, which is why many public buildings do not provide them anymore.

Will drinking fountains be included in the new school?

My children all take refillable water bottles to school, but often they finish their water before the school day is done.

Because they will not drink from the water fountains, they often go to a vending machine. I would far prefer them to purchase water rather than soda or juice (both of which contain either chemical sweeteners or sugars). I also wonder, if the concern is with recyclables entering the landfills, why is there not the same outcry about aluminum cans or juice boxes?

Education about the effectiveness of recycling is the solution to this concern.

In fact, just this weekend I purchased a pet bed with fabric made from recycled plastics. I believe that when people are made aware of the consequences of their choices and the benefits of recycling, they will make informed decisions about their purchases and their recycling habits.

NWSS is due to be replaced, so until that time the discussion should be put on hold and bottled water must remain an available choice to students and staff.

Escapee nabbed in city New Westminster police arrested a woman who escaped from Burnaby RCMP custody on Jan. 7.

Just after 2:30 a.m. on Monday, New Westminster police officers patrolling in the 12th Street area located 46-year-old Susan Smith and took her into custody.

According to the RCMP, Smith did not attempt to evade police and was not wearing the same clothing she was at the time of her escape. The handcuffs and shackles she was last seen wearing had been removed.

Smith was transferred to Burnaby RCMP custody at approximately 3 a.m. and was escorted to Vancouver Provincial Court on Monday morning.

Smith was wanted because of a Friday incident that began at the Metropolis at Metrotown shopping centre.

Smith was arrested on suspicion of shoplifting. Police discovered she was in a breach of her probation conditions by being at the shopping centre.

Smith was taken to the Burnaby

RCMP detachment and booked into the cells there. While being booked into cells, Smith appeared to have a medical issue.

She was examined by members of the B.C. Ambulance Service and transported, in shackles and handcuffs, to Burnaby Hospital with an RCMP escort.

Just after 4:30 p.m., medical staff requested that one of the handcuffs be removed so that Smith could use the washroom. A portable toilet was wheeled into the cubicle for Smith to use. One of Smith’s handcuffs was removed, but the shackles were left on.

The officer remained outside the cubicle, but when Smith did not respond, the officer checked and found that she had escaped. Surveillance video at the hospital revealed that Smith had left the hospital at 4:41 p.m.

While police dogs, Air 1, uniform patrol officers and numerous additional resources tried to locate Smith, she wasn’t found until early Monday morning.

Kettle campaign a success Despite the current tough economic climate, Canadians still managed to dig deep into their pockets for the Salvation Army’s annual Christmas kettle campaign.

So far, the charity says it has collected more than $18 million from the nearly 2,000 kettles on street corners and at retail outlets nationwide from mid-

November to Christmas Eve, and the Royal City played a significant part.

“It was a good year for us, that’s for sure,” said local Sally Ann spokesperson Capt.

David MacPherson. “We had around 200 people, some volunteers and others who were paid, at 50 kettles all across New West and the Tri-Cities, and we brought

f adding humour to your life was one of your New Year’s resolutions, you’re in luck.

Local comedian Janice Bannister is getting set to offer some standup comedy classes that will help folks turn their ideas into comedy. Registration for the New Westminster class is underway, but the class sold out the last time it was offered.

Starting this month, the class will be held on Mondays from 7 to 9:30 p.m. at New Westminster Secondary School. Beginner classes will also be offered in Vancouver.

Family drop-in starts

New Westminster Family Place is inviting parents and their little ones to check out its newest offering.

Family Place has launched a drop-in at F.W. Howay Elementary School on Thursdays from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Like Family Place’s other drop-ins, the newest program includes play time and snack time.

“We can have gym time if we want to,” said executive director Marjorie Staal. “There is even a little outdoor area. We won’t be doing that until the rain stops.”

Staal said the school and the Westminster Children’s After School Society have been “superb” about making space available to Family Place. The drop-in is located just inside the main entrance to the school, in space used by the before- and after-school program.

“It’s a blend of people from the neighbourhood and moms from the school with older siblings,” Staal said of people attending the drop-in so far. “They are all new people.”

The New Westminster Firefighters’ Charitable Society has kicked off the new year on a winning note thanks to the efforts of local community members and a Major League Baseball all-star.

The charitable society held its annual Christmas tree chipping fundraiser on Jan. 8 and 9, two days after the Justin Morneau Charity Bowling Night.

The New Westminster native, a first baseman with the Minnesota Twins, proposed the fundraiser for the charitable society.

“I think a lot of people had a lot of fun,” said firefighter Glen Bailey, president of the charitable society. “He (Morneau) throws a mean strike. He whistles that ball straight down the line. You can almost hear the pins screaming. “ The New Westminster Firefighters’ Charitable Society is still tallying how much money was raised from the night but anticipates it raised about $10,000.

Riku Mochizuki, a player from the New Westminster Royals Little League baseball team, has won a $2,500 scholarship to Sylvan Learning to help with his future studies.

A press release from New Westminster Little League notes that Riku was featured in a story on Perry’s Prospects on CTV News last July.

The stories, put together by sports anchor Perry Solkowski, focused on outstanding young athletes.

All of the young athletes who are featured on Perry’s Prospects throughout the year are entered into a draw to win a scholarship to help with their studies.

Riku was this year’s lucky winner and was set to appear on the CTV News on Jan. 6 to accept his scholarship to Sylvan Learning.

Fundraiser helps fight arthritis

Participants turned out in holiday-themed costumes and jingle bells to raise money for the Arthritis Society’s third annual Jingle Bell Walk and Run before Christmas.

Santa was on hand to deliver presents and help serve the hot chocolate and cookies as participants walked, jogged or ran the one- and five-kilometre courses around the Quay. The event raised more than $13,000, which will go to help support arthritis research.

“It was terrific to see so many families come out and join us,” said Ashley Kroening, manager of special events for the Arthritis Society, B.C. and Yukon division. “The enthusiasm and energy was contagious. We made a lot noise, had a lot of fun, saw some very unusual costumes and helped raise more than $13,000 for the Arthritis Society’s educational programs, services and research.”

Jingle Bell Walk and Run honouree Kadi Nicholson was pleased she participated.

“My family and I were more than happy to be a part of this event. We wanted to give back to the Arthritis Society for all the support they’ve given us over the years,” said Nicholson.

Fundraiser helps the tiniest patients

The Vancouver Raw Food School and the Vancouver Circus School are teaming up to raise funds for the neonatal unit at Royal Columbian Hospital.

The two groups are holding a charity fundraiser at the River Market at Westminster Quay on Friday, Jan 14 from 6:30 to 10 p.m. The event is being held in space occupied by the Vancouver Circus School.

“Entertainment is by the Vancouver Circus School,” said organizer Cheryl Gauld. “They are going to be doing some circus acts.”

The event also features appetizers and desserts courtesy of the Vancouver Raw Food School, wine sampling

by Pacific Breeze Winery, desserts by Organic Lives and musical entertainment by Reverbnation Band. Clive Langton, president of Raw B.C., is the event’s MC, and Preet Marwaha of Organic Lives is the keynote speaker.

“He is going to give a 15-minutes, humourous talk on his journey to health,” Gauld said about a man who recently returned from speaking at the United Nations.

Attendees can also buy mystery balloons and try to win prizes including a weekend for two in Seattle, a weekend for two in Vancouver and a wine tasting for four at Pacific Breeze Winery.

Gauld founded the Vancouver Raw Food School, whose mission is to teach people why and how to create healthy and delicious food with simple and pure ingredients.

“We teach classes,” she said. “We have about 15 or 16 classes on holistic health, vegetarianism, raw food.”

Tickets to the fundraiser are $35 and are available from www.vancouverrawfoodschool.com or vrfs@shaw.ca.

Gauld was inspired to help out the neonatal unit after touring the department at Royal Columbian Hospital.

Kids lend a hand to children’s hospital

A group of children living in London Square in New Westminster recently raised $150 for B.C. Children’s Hospital.

Eman Elmasri said the children donned their heaviest coats and boots and went collecting empty bottles and cans. Nur and Iqan Elmasri, Jack and Ada Niu, Sharereh Hamed, Dan Chaves and Eric Jiao set out to collect empties for charity.

“And collect they did,” Elmasri wrote in an e-mail to The Record. “This small group collected large bags of empties, and, with the help of their families, took them to a bottle depot and came away with $150, which they promptly donated to the B.C. Children’s Hospital in Vancouver.”

The November project marked the second year in a row for the effort. Last year’s

project raised funds for the food bank.

Each week the children, aged four to 15, meet to do art projects and consider ways of helping the community. An “animator” takes notes about the group’s plans.

“They are trying to get together so they are learning virtues, principles and service,” Elmasri said. “They get together every week and learn a virtue, for example generosity, how we can act on generosity.”

Elmasri believes that the children’s activities have helped improve their neighbourhood and the community. Elmasri, who moved to New Westminster in 2008, previously lived in Burnaby, where she was named a Local Hero in 2007 for her volunteer efforts in that community.

Stories of Sapperton past OUR PAST

T

he Sapperton neighbourhood of New Westminster has been in the news a lot in the past few months due to the work on East Columbia Street through its “downtown” area, the Brewery District and most recently the North Fraser Perimeter Road, Bailey Bridge and connections with Coquitlam. In 2011, we will be offering some Sapperton programming, including a walking tour or two, perhaps a cemetery tour, and a slide presentation.

As a result of our comments we made earlier about those plans, we received an interesting question concerning its history: “Is it true that the name of this part of New Westminster was actually changed from Sapperton, and city council went along with it?” The answer to this is yes, but council didn’t just go along with it, they voted unanimously for the proposition.

This happened in 1928,

when a motion prepared by the North Westminster Improvement Association, through its president, Dr. P. D. MacSween, and introduced in a meeting of council by Aldermen Hogg and McAdam, was passed unanimously by New Westminster city council.

The basis of the move to change the name was that “North Westminster” would be more conducive to attracting business, improving the neighbourhood’s economy and increasing local real estate values.

While there were plenty of individuals against the idea, mainly on historical or heritage grounds, the petition and comments show that most of the rest of the community was comfortable with the change. Personal research piecing together information and interviewing people who experienced the change shows that, while there were a good many against the change, “North Westminster” proponents carried the day.

In reality it was a hollow victory as the vast majority of people from Sapperton simply ignored the change.

A colleague recently gave us some letters about the change from the B.C. Electric Railway Company,

in which the city requested that the company change the name of its station at Sapperton to North Westminster. The streetcar did show the new appellation but often, according to an old-time streetcar conductor, blanked out the name in the Sapperton area because some young people would throw rotten fruit, etc. at the car if the new title showed.

In 1934, after considerable behind the scenes agitation and good oldfashioned – and at times very loud – lobbying, the council of the day moved to rescind the 1928 resolution. It moved that “the name of Sapperton should be retained in recognition of those historic figures so interwoven with the story of the City of New Westminster.”

At the council meeting at which this whole matter was discussed, no one came to represent the “North Westminster group,” and once again council voted unanimously for the change.

An interesting story, part New Westminster – part Sapperton, but very important to the neighbourhood in the northern area of the city. Watch 2011 for more Sappertonthemed items.

Emotional awareness can be a long journey HEALTHWISE

I

n a recent column, I introduced the first step in my approach to meditation by asking the question, “What are you feeling?” and in answering, “Feel your breath,” how to still your mind with meditative breathing.

From this perspective, you can gain awareness of your emotions without getting caught up in them, and, at this point, we can question their source.

The cause could lie in your physical state, your thoughts or your relationships. Your emotional state could be transient like the weather or enduring like the climate, the latter being due to a deep and significant source.

Do your feelings reflect your physical state?

Insufficient sleep can make any of us feel drained, less motivated and even a little depressed. Too much stress in the absence of sufficient rest throughout the day can make you feel distracted and anxious.

Medical conditions that can make you feel exhausted and depressed include diabetes, hypothyroidism, anemia, fibromyalgia, congestive heart failure, inflammatory arthritis, chronic pain, sleep disorders and atherosclerosis.

Anemia, asthma attacks, cardiac arrhythmias and hypoglycemia can make you feel anxious and panicky.

Your energy and emotional state can be affected by your diet. I always felt lethargic and sleepy after a dim sum lunch, bloated and unwell after fast food.

Chemicals in the form of prescription medications, alcohol, street drugs, coffee, energy drinks and cigarettes can mess with your emotions, simulating a spectrum of psychiatric disorders, including depression, mania, panic attacks and psychosis.

Your emotions may be influenced by your environment. The nature and quality of lighting, air quality and noise can affect energy, mood, stress and anxiety. In seasonal affective disorder, individuals are clinically depressed during the dark days of the fall and winter.

Are your emotions a reflection of your thoughts?

Is your emotional reaction based on a mistaken impression, assumptions or

habits of thought? We often make assumptions about the motivations behind the behaviour of others. If we expect and think the worst, we will perceive it. We can take offence when none is intended. We may feel insulted when another’s statement may have been neutral or even positive.

Negative expectations about a dreaded family gathering can be based on the past and the mutual assumptions family members hold when relating to one another. This often leads to self-fulfilling prophecies – we behave in ways that provoke old dysfunctional patterns of

relating and reinforce old assumptions.

If I could give one gift to every family, it would be a board game in which everyone must play by a new set of rules, begin a new game and look at one another with fresh and open eyes. In this game, no single player wins but everyone loses – their egos, their grudges, their resentments and their pain.

If only it were so easy to change our thoughts and challenge our old, often unconscious assumptions about ourselves and others.

Our emotional states can influence our thoughts.

When depressed, we don’t

see options as easily and we tend to view others, ourselves, the world and the future in a negative way. When anxious, we think about what could go wrong and expect it to happen. When angry, we just don’t think so clearly.

Is your emotional state a reflection of the relationships in your life?

Conflict in your important relationships is a major barrier to happiness.

Success in all other areas in life is insufficient if you don’t feel valued, respected and loved by those who know you best. In all of our relationships, we need to listen and we need to be

heard. We need to forgive, and we need to be forgiven.

We all need to feel appreciated. We must attend to one another mindfully.

Unhappiness can arise from your relationship with your own life. You must find meaning in what you do each day. Your actions – what you say and what you do – must be in alignment with what you value and believe in. If you live with integrity, you respect others and you respect yourself.

And by living your life in this way, mindfully and deliberately, you will enjoy the energy and enthusiasm to seize each day.

Mindful meditation can

be the means to gain emotional awareness and with careful reflection, insight.

With the perspective of such insight, you may live more mindfully, attend to your body, your environment, your thoughts and your relationships.

The mastery of your emotions can be the journey of a lifetime. It begins with mindful awareness.

Rebels lose No. 1 at Legal Beagle

The Burnaby South Rebels came through with a third-place finish from the Legal Beagle boys’ basketball tournament at Terry Fox last weekend.

South, the former No. 1-ranked team from the outset of the B.C. AAA high school season, will slip in this week’s poll after losing its semifinal matchup 72-57 to tournament runner-up Kelowna.

South then rebounded with a

69-60 win over host Fox in the consolation final behind high games from second team all-star Manroop Clair, with 17, and Lazar Cuk, with 15.

Clair opened the second half with back-to-back treys, outscoring Fox 25-14 in the third quarter.

The new top-ranked provincial AAA leader R.C. Palmer won the Beagle title with a 70-63 victory over the No. 5-ranked Kelowna Owls.

“We’re not No. 1 anymore. The pressure’s off. Now we can start to get back to work and putting

it back in place,” said South head coach Greg Matic.

South came out in the first tournament of the new year and struggled against No. 8 Charles Tupper, eking out a 60-59 win over last year’s Vancouver city champion.

Manroop and Ater Degal paced Burnaby with 13 points apiece.

The Rebels were then relegated to the third-place game with the loss to Kelowna. Clair led South with 30 points.

“We really struggled in our first two games. It’s all catching up on us,” Matic said, adding the Rebels have had just two practices since Dec. 15.

Irvine garnered a first team allstar for South, while Degal was a second-team pick.

Elsewhere on the hard court, Burnaby Central placed sixth at the Britannia Bulldog Classic in Vancouver.

Central lost 73-69 to King George in the fourth-place game.

Moscrop fell 56-40 to the hosts in the final placement game.

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins slipped to third place in the North American mid-term rankings according to NHL Central Scouting Monday.

The 6-0 170-pound Western Hockey League centre was passed by Swedish national Gabriel Landeskog of the Ontario Hockey League’s Kitchener Rangers and Drummondville Voltigeur centre Sean Couturier of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.

Landeskog came to North America as an underage player and had 24 goals and 46 points in his rookie season.

This season, the Rangers left winger is currently second in the OHL with 25 goals and 45 points.

Couturier was the only draft-eligible player to share the silver medal with Canada’s junior national team at the recent world championships in Buffalo, New York.

Nugent-Hopkins has 10 goals and a team-leading 50 points for the Red Deer Rebels to date.

The North Burnaby product was a late cut off the Canada junior national team.

Seattle Thunderbird winger Luke Lockhart was projected at 73rd overall, just ahead of B.C. Hockey League product Destry Straight, a former Northwest Giants forward currently playing junior A with the Coquitlam Express.

Another former major midget Giant, Brady Brassart, was pegged at 154th. The 6-1, 185-lbs. forward plays on the Spokane Chiefs of the WHL. The NHL junior entry draft will be held on June 24 and 25 in St. Paul, Minnesota.

On the WHL trade deadline, Calgary Hitmen defenceman Matt MacKenzie of New Westminster was traded to the Tri-City Americans on Monday for forward Brooks Macek, defenceman Spencer Humphries and a third-round pick in the 2012 bantam draft.

Royal City Curling Club must settle for two berths into the men’s provincial final following a heartbreaking loss in Victoria.

The Steve Kopf rink of third Derek Errington, second Mike Merklinger and lead Mark Bradshaw lost 6-5 to Victoria’s Jason Clarke for the final berth into the B.C.s at the Coastal No. 2 championships in the capital city Monday.

Leading 5-4 after nine ends, Kopf could only stand and watch as Clarke played his last rock with an in-off his own rock to remove shot stone and score two points to win the B/C division event and a final berth into the upcoming provincials.

Earlier in the competition, Neil Dangerfield, another Victoria skip, won the Aevent qualifier, defeating Marpole’s Wes Craig 87 with a single in the 10th end in a close final.

The two Victoria skips will join eight other qualifiers, including Royal City’s Sean Geall and Brent Pierce.

Kopf won six matches at the Coastal qualifier.

The Kopf rink lost his first match to Dangerfield in the A semifinal. He was relegated to the C event after an 8-4 loss to Clarke, the eventual B winner.

Kopf then made the best

of his last remaining games, winning three draws in a row, including a 7-3 win over clubmate Bryan Miki in the C semi and then doubling Duncan’s Jason Montgomery 9-5 in the Cevent final.

Miki also had a chance at a provincial berth, losing out to Clarke in the B final by a 7-4 score.

The Miki rink of third Tyler Klitch, second Jay Batch and lead Chad Hoffmann were tied 4-4 after six ends before Clarke stole singles in the seventh, eighth and ninth ends to win the B event.

Miki also lost a narrow 6-5 decision by a steal in the 10th end to Clarke in the A event.

Kopf beat Miki in the C event, in part, with a tworock steal in the seventh end.

Royal City’s Stephen Schneider finished with a 2-3 record, including an 8-5 loss to Montgomery in the C event.

Former two-time B.C. junior men’s champion Bryan Kedziora also took part in the Coastal qualifier.

The B.C. men’s championships will take place in Vernon from Feb. 7 to 13.

New Westminster sports briefs New Westminster’s Ben Davies scored his first-ever goal in his first National Lacrosse League game.

The 6-4 New Westminster defender scored the first goal of the season for the Colorado Mammoth, tallying in his NLL debut at 5:38 of the first period in an 11-10 overtime loss to the defending champion Washington Stealth in Denver, Saturday.

Davies signed a two-year contract with the Mammoth.

Prospect’s reward

New Westminster Royals’ Riku Mochizuki won a $2,500 scholarship draw from Sylvan Learning on Jan. 6. Mochizuki was presented his award on CTV television as part of a promotion with Sylvan and Perry Solkowski’s Perry’s Prospects. Mochizuki played major Little League baseball with New Westminster, which hosted the provincial championships last season.

Burnaby district’s Byrne Creek, overall winners in 2009, were also eliminated on Friday following a 78-47 loss to seventh-place-finishing Fleetwood Park.

It is with great sadness that we announce the loss of Bob. He was a good man who was an active member of The Telephone Pioneers SPACE and worked for B.C. Tel for 35 years. Bob was predeceased by his BOOKING parents, Ellen and Robert, as well as his brother Stewart and niece For: COLUMBIA BOWELL Barbara Buhler. He is survived by his sister Helen, long-time friend Rep: DTJames Joyce Stuart and nephew David. A warm thank you to Dr. Paletta Ad#: 1289747 and the nurses at Royal Columbian Hospital sixth south. A Memorial Service to honour Bob will take place Saturday, January 15th at 2pm at First Presbyterian Church, 335 Seventh Street, New Westminster.

WALTON, Norma Jean (nee Sangster)

January 22, 1928 - January 5, 2011

A 55 year resident of Surrey, Norma passed away peacefully at Surrey Memorial Hospital. Norma was born and raised in New Westminster and attended T.J. Trapp Technical High School. She was the second of three children born to the late J. Lewis and Naomi Sangster, and was the beloved Wife of high school sweetheart George Walton for over 65 years. Norma claimed many trophies as an avid 5 pin bowler, and she loved playing Rummoli with the neighbour ladies. She also won several trophies at shuffleboard in Indio, California where she and George wintered for many years.

Predeceased by her parents and older brother Ross, memories of Norma will forever be treasured by George, their son Craig (Donna) of Vernon, Granddaughters Traci and Tana, great-grandchildren Katelyn, Bradley, Jaden and Riley, and sister Evelyn Benson (Don) of New Westminster, along with several generations of nieces, nephews, friends and other family who are richer for having known her.

Thank you to all who comforted Norma in her last weeks.
