Huge shopping centre planned
TFN enters into agreement with pair of companies that could see 1.8 million square feet of retail constructed The TFN Economic Development Corporation has entered into a memorandum of agreement with a pair of development companies to build 1.8 million square feet of shopping and office space. The economic development arm of the Tsawwassen First Nation announced yesterday morning it has inked deals with Ivanhoe Cambridge and the Property Development Group to develop up to 70 hectares (175 acres) of TFN land. “This exciting project has the potential to become one of British
Columbia’s signature shopping locations,” a TFN press release stated. The land, situated along the north side of Highway 17 near the Tsawwassen ferry terminal, was received by TFN as part of its 2009 treaty. According to TFN Economic Development Corporation CEO Chris Hartman, Ivanhoe Cambridge is proposing to develop roughly two-thirds of the property, with Property Development
Group developing the remaining one-third. Under the current concept, approximately 1.8 million square feet of retail, office, entertainment and other uses would be created in the two projects. Hartman noted that Ivanhoe Cambridge’s part of the project would comprise 1.2 million square feet as a destination retail and entertainment centre. Tentatively named Tsawwassen
Mills, it would follow the success of CrossIron Mills, north of Calgary, which opened in 2010, and Vaughan Mills, north of Toronto, which opened in 2004. CrossIron Mills has over 200 stores, including Winners, H&M and Sport Chek, as well as movie theatres and restaurants. Vaughan Mills is strikingly similar with many of the same stores and eateries. Property Development Group is proposing to develop a further 600,000 square feet as outdoor See SHOPPING page 3

He’s got some big decisions to make and hopes whatever he comes up with will be given fair consideration. That’s what Century Group president Sean Hodgins had to say this week as he continued to reflect on the outcome of the recent Mayor’s Summit on the future of his Southlands property in Tsawwassen. “I wanted a little time to think it through. I think I have to at

I probably will and put some sort of detail to it,” he said in an inter-
view. The most controversial element of the proposed Tsawwassen Area Plan is a recommendation Delta apply to the Agricultural
Land Commission to have the Southlands placed back in the ALR. The public hearing was heading into its fourth night last month
