Mayor Lois Jackson issued an apology this week for problems with a municipal online survey on the Southlands. The mayor said the survey will be disregarded and promised a report on the matter for Delta council’s next meeting on Monday. “This error has obviously had the effect of undermining the credibility of the Tsawwassen Area Plan process with some members of the public,” said Jackson. “It is important that our work be conducted in a professional manner and that the public is assured of this.”

A flood of complaints had been lodged about the Tsawwassen Area Plan survey on Delta’s website. A question regarding the Southlands seemed to mysteriously change opponents’ answers to indicate they were in favour of some form of development. When the problem was raised, municipal planning director Tom Leatham told the Optimist a technical glitch was discovered that caused answers to register incorrectly or not at all. Noting there’s no need to rush things, Leathem told the Optimist this week the report coming to council on Monday might also have some options how to proceed with area plan consultations. Saying he’s concerned about

Delta’s lack of a fair and transparent process of gathering public opinion, Dana Maslovat, one of the organizers of the group Southlands the Facts, said a resident whose response was affected in the survey told him they filed a complaint with Delta police. Maslovat said not long afterward several others informed him they had added their names to the complaint. Noting the department takes any complaint by citizens seriously, a police spokesperson said a file has been opened and an investigation is in the early stages. He said the department has no comment on the validity of the See SURVEY page 3
