Fixture Update

Our last competitive match was two weeks ago when a late goal from George Woodward earned us a 2-2 draw here against AFC Sudbury. Last Saturday's match away to Cambridge City was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch, so instead a hastily arranged friendly was played against BetVictor Isthmian League South Central side Barking, with the Gulls winning 5-1.

Our BetVictor Isthmian League North match away to Cambridge City has been hastily rearranged following last Saturday's postponement. The match will now take place at Histon FC on Wednesday 25th March, kick off at 19:45. We will now travel to Suffolk to face Felixstowe on Tuesday 10th March, taking on Brentwood at a venue yet to be decided a week later on Tuesday 17th March. Finally, our trip to Basildon United will now take place on Tuesday 31st March. All three matches will kick off at 19:45.

Upcoming Fixtures After today we will travel to play our next three matches away from home. On Tuesday

AWAY DAY PREVIEW CHRIS SMITH

The Gulls have three consecutive away matches coming up, all of which are in the BetVictor Isthmian North, so here’s everything you need to know... Felixstowe & Walton United Tuesday 10th March Firstly, on Tuesday night we make the evening trip to Suffolk as the Gulls take on Felixstowe & Walton United, kick off at 19:45. The Gulls and the (other) Seasiders met at Park Lane in mid-December when the Gulls triumphed 3-1, thanks to goals from Tobi Joseph, Jason Hallett & Michael Finneran. Ground Information Address: The Goldstar Ground, Dellwood Avenue, Felixstowe, IP11 9HT. Admission Prices: £9.00 adults, £6.00 concessions (65 & over), free for under 16’s. Travel Information Car: Directions from Park Lane can be found here:

Parking: A 40-space car park is located at the main entrance. A further 12 spaces are available close to the clubhouse for officials, guests and blue badge holders. There is plenty of street parking close to the ground, however guests are advised to park considerately. Rail: Felixstowe train station is a short seven minute walk from the ground. Trains run from London Liverpool Street to Felixstowe via Ipswich. Food & Drink The ground boasts a large modern clubhouse, following its opening in July 2017. The bar area has three TV screens, with surround sound and a giant projector, all of which show live matches on Sky and BT Sport. The bar serves an array of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, all at very reasonable prices. If you’re after food, then you’re in luck, as a snack bar is located within the clubhouse, which has serving hatches both inside the bar and pitch side. The snack bar serves an array of hot food, drink and snacks. If you're looking for somewhere outside of the ground, then the options are plentiful. Felixstowe is a great place to spend the day and offers a lively seafront, shops, food and drink. Here are just a few options, all of which are a stones throw away from the ground:

Chuffers Bar, IP11 7DY - 0.3 miles Hamilton Fish & Chips, IP11 7DT - 0.3 miles Prezzo Italian Restaurant, IP11 7BN - 0.4 miles Aveley Saturday 14th March Secondly, we travel down the A13 next Saturday to take on Aveley, kick off at 15:00. The Millers are enjoying a fantastic campaign thus far, excelling in both the league and the FA Trophy. Aveley visited Notts County in the FA Trophy at the end of February, finally exiting this years competition after a tremendous run. Aveley currently sit firmly within the playoffs and will be looking to gain a tighter grip on those playoff places against the Gulls. Ground Information Address: Parkside, Park Lane, Aveley, South Ockendon, RM15 4PX Admission Prices: £10.00 adults, £6.00 concessions (65 & over), £3.00 under 16’s Travel Information Car: Directions from Park Lane can be found here:

The closest C2C stations are South Ockendon and Rainham (372 stop is just outside Rainham station). The District Line closest stop is Elm Park, where on exit you can get the same 372 into Aveley. Food & Drink Parkside has superb facilities and accommodates a very modern, licensed clubhouse which serves an array of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. The snack bar adjacent to the clubhouse sells a range of hot food, drinks and snacks. MATCH REPORT AFC SUDBURY (H) Canvey Island 2 Michael Finneran (29') George Woodward (90') AFC Sudbury 2 Baris Antintop (54') Callum Harrison (83'p) Attendance: 245 Starting XI: Rob Budd, Dan Humphreys, George Woodward, James White (c), Darren Phillips (Off 61'), Michael Finneran, Tobi Joseph, Rob Lacey, Jason Hallett, Sam Bantick, Ernest Okoh (Off 70'). Subs: Albert Levett (On 61'), Freddy Eastwood (On 70'), Ryan Melaugh, Sam Brogan. An open affair with limited chances saw two sides share the points at Park Lane on Saturday. Talking to Mark Bentley he was disappointed that his side “didn’t manage the game properly in the second half after going 1-0 up", and that he expects his team to “win their home games." Mark Morsley and AFC Sudbury will be disappointed also that they didn’t capitalise on a game which was there for the taking after dominating large parts of the game. The visitors had a great chance to take

the lead inside the opening four minutes after Tobi Joseph got up well to clear the ball, but only as far as Callum Harrison. He connected with the ball beautifully but goalkeeper Rob Budd was able to parry the ball far away from the goal to keep it goalless. There was another massive chance for Sudbury just inside 10 minutes when a poor clearance from defender Darren Phillips was scuffed into the path of Reece Harris. He teed up Billy Holland whose shot was well saved by Budd, who was definitely the more busy of the two keepers in the opening exchanges. It was all Sudbury in the first twenty minutes. A free kick from was put deep into the Canvey box but was cleared well out of reach of the goal. Reece Harris was first to the ball and was not closed down and so had a go from range, but his effort was high and wide of the goal. Just before the half hour mark it was daylight for Canvey who had been poor up until this point. James White put a ball deep into the Sudbury box, Jason Hallett knocked it down beautifully for Michael Finneran to place the ball into the bottom right corner to put Canvey 1-0 up against the run of play. Canvey seemed to finally wake up and start to create some chances of their own, getting more of a foothold in the game since opening the scoring. Another

deep free kick into the box from White was knocked down by goalscorer Finneran knocks it down for Rob Lacey, but his shot was heroically blocked on the line by Billy Holland to keep the score within reach for Sudbury. A cagey first half which was a tale of two sectors, with the opening period being controlled by AFC Sudbury but Canvey finishing the stronger after scoring their goal. Canvey started the second half the brighter of the two sides, with a dangerous cross from the left by George Woodward forcing experienced defender Adam Bailey-Dennis into an important clearance. An equaliser was found by AFC Sudbury just before the 55th minute following a beautifully worked move down the left hand side. Tom Maycock cut the ball back to the skipper Baris Altintop who poked the ball in at the near post to put Sudbury back in the game. Another massive opportunity fell Sudbury’s way going into the 70th minute when Frederick King raced away from James White, although his shot was weak and comfortable for Budd to save diving

to his right to keep the score level. Coming towards the dying embers of the game, AFC Sudbury had Canvey peggedd back deep in their own half. An excellent whipped corner from Callum Harrison on the right hand side was met by Lewis O’Malley, although he put his header just over the bar which was a massive let off for Canvey. The hard work from AFC Sudbury paid off when Liam Bennett drove down the right hand side and got the better of James White. He drove towards the Canvey goal but was clipped by Dan Humphreys, causing the referee to point straight to the spot. Harrison stepped up and sent Budd the wrong way to his right and in off the post to give Sudbury a late lead. It was a great reply from Canvey however to earn a share of the spoils having been second best. Substitute Freddy Eastwood who passed the ball back to George Woodward, who in turn drove into space and just outside 25 yards hit a sweetlystruck shot which sailed into the top left corner. by Harry Merrell

CLUB HISTORY

GREAT WAKERING ROVERS The club was formed in 1919 by soldiers demobbed after World War I and finding employment in the local brickfields. Not much in memory remains of the early years of the club although the club do poses some wonderful pictures from around that period. We first played in one of Southend’s oldest leagues, the Southend & District League, where the Rovers stayed until 1982. Rovers were the leagues most dominant clubs, especially in the 1960s and 1970s and to this day remain so on record. The switch in 1982 saw the club move to the newly formed Southend & District Alliance Football League, but sadly this league folded in 1989 leaving Rovers with a decision to move back to the Southend & District League or take a step up in standard. With what most Rovers feel to be the best squad amassed by a manager, in this case Eddie Nash, Rovers took the decision to step up to intermediate level and joined the Essex Intermediate League. Rovers remained in the Essex Intermediate League for three seasons, winning the championships of Divisions Three and Two in successive seasons. After the latter, Rovers

successfully applied to join the Essex Senior League and found themselves in Step 5 of the Non-League pyramid, which for a village club was a tremendous feat. In the 1994-1995 season Rovers narrowly beat Sawbridgeworth Town FC for the Essex Senior League title. Rovers had collected 71 points for the season and lost just three times although the title win was only won on goal difference (18). During that season Rovers forward Paul Flack scored 28 goals, which included a haul of 4 goals away at Eton Manor as Rovers celebrated a 9-0 victory. Also included in his stunning season were two further hattricks. That season his strike partner Neil Ramsey grabbed 20 goals as Rovers hit home 82 goals. Rovers defence of the Essex Senior crown would falter the following season, finishing 2nd behind Romford. In the 1996-1997 season Rovers would also finish second again, behind Ford United by just three points. The 1997-1998 season would be Rovers worst season in the Essex Senior League, finishing mid-table, 7th, and 36 points behind winners Concord Rangers. The club’s final appearance in the

Essex Senior League saw them finish 2nd behind Bowers United. However, due to Bowers United failing to meet ground grading requirements for promotion, Rovers were promoted to the Isthmian League in their place. With Isthmian League Division Three on the horizon for the 1999-2000 season, Rovers move into Step 4 of the league pyramid was complete. At the very first attempt Rovers were promoted to Division Two finishing behind East Thurrock Utd by three points. Promotion to Division Two gave Rovers some stiffer opposition and the season finished with Rovers in mid-table. In 2002 the Isthmian League then reorganised and Rovers found themselves in a new look Division One North, finishing mid-table but more than holding their own in what was a very competitive league. In 2003 the club were embroiled in a relegation fight, although this was won convincingly as Rovers finished 15 points ahead of the relegation zone. A further league reorganisation in 2004 saw the club switch to the Southern Football League Eastern Division for two seasons. The 2004-2005 season saw Rovers miss relegation by one point due to Erith & Belvedere FC being deducted three points, but in the 2005-2006 season Rovers bounced back to finish safely in mid-table. For the 2006-2007 season Rovers found themselves in familiar terri-

tory, switching back to the Isthmian League Division One North, where we finished 12th. Two further seasons saw Rovers finish 13th and stabilise themselves as a Ryman League club. The 2009-2010 season brought a record number of points for the Rovers at Ryman League level, 64, but towards the end of the season manager Iain O’Connell was offered the management of Ryman Premier League side Margate leaving assistant Ryan Wilkinson and physio Cleve Taylor to take over temporary control with 12 games to go. In a season that saw Rovers top the table for 9 weeks, the dizzy heights would eventually get to O’Connell’s side as they finished in 9th place, 13 points behind the playoffs. Ryan Wilkinson and Cleve Taylor would be implemented as jointmanagers for the 2010-2011 season and their first season in charge would offer up 44 points and 15th place in the league. Their start to the 20112012 season wasn’t what they had hoped and after one win in their opening nine games, both offered their resignations. Rovers made first team coach Danny Heath caretaker manager and he brought temporary stabilisation back to the side as they recorded two wins and three draws from his seven games in charge. Rovers would offer the management post to Danny Greaves, son of exTottenham and England legend Jimmy Greaves. Danny saw that a clean sweep of the side was required

and let go the majority of the squad, bringing in loanees whilst trying to sign up new players. Unfortunately this plan didn’t work and after a miserable run of six losses in a row, he too offered his resignation. Rovers would offer ex-Captain and stalwart Dan Trenkel the position as manager in November 2011 in an effort to stabilise the club. However, Trenkel was playing for Redbridge FC at the time who were on a fantastic run in the FA Cup, and it would be two weeks before he would be unveiled at the club, Danny Heath taking temporary control again, although this time losing both games. Trenkel would bring back a number of players previously released by Danny Greaves, and opened his management career with a 2-2 draw at home to Waltham Forest , followed by a 1-1 draw at home to Harlow Town. However, although the side were performing better, results would continue to go against him and after just three wins in the remaining 21 games, including 6 draws, Rovers would find themselves bottom of the table and staring relegation into the Essex Senior League. In 2014, they won the ESL by one point on the final day of the season, and were promoted back to the Isthmian League. The 2016/17 season was probably the most turbulent the club has ever experienced. Seeing two Chairman

leaving their posts, together with two Managers also losing their jobs. In total 71 players were used in the fight against relegation without any success. As we were finally relegated after two seasons at step 4 in the FA Pyramid returning to the Essex Senior League. Manager Iain O’Connell, in his second spell with the club has been working hard during the summer to put together a strong squad and to lay down the foundation to mount a serious challenge for promotion to enable Great Wakering Rovers to get back to Step 4 in the FA pyramid the club expects. The following year the Rovers won the Essex Senior League along with the Errington League Cup and were promoted back to the Isthmian League once again. This pre-seasons aw Garry Kimble take over from Iain O’Connell, who stepped down as Rovers manager during pre-season to concentrate on his family. Rovers had a up and down season with Gary Kimble leaving the club and Stephen Butterworth taking over just after Christmas on a temporary basis and managed to keep Rovers up and playing Isthmian football again for 2019-20 season. Stephen Butterworth was given the role on a permanent basis and is looking to build on last year.

INTERVIEW MARTIN TUOHY

Q. You’ve taken up a player/coach role at Great Wakering Rovers this season. How are you finding the transition into coaching, and was this always something that you wanted to do when your playing days came to an end? A. Obviously the transition has been a different experience. I have helped to bring players in and have met for meetings with players alongside Scouse who is the manager. It's hard work negotiating with them but I remember doing it myself. I’ve always wanted to have a go at the other side and it keeps you involved in football. Q. Your playing days aren’t over yet, as you proved by scoring in the impressive 3-0 win away to Bury Town last time out. Are you hoping to continue to play next season, or will you concentrate on your coaching? A. I still love playing the game and have looked after myself reasonably well and still believe in my ability. I will continue to play and also look to get more involved hopefully on a coaching level Q. Given your incredible goalscoring record at this level of football and higher, do you work with the forwards predominantly in training, or does your role see you working with the whole team? A. To be honest, I don’t do too much because of the playing aspect, but even at my age I’m still learning. I help with the warm

ups and set pieces but I’m planning on starting my coaching badges and getting more involved. Q. This season has been extremely successful so far, with the team exceeding all expectations and are challenging for a playoff position. What do you put the success that the club have enjoyed so far down to? A. We have definitely mixed it with the big boys and are exceeding expectations as you say. In my opinion, this is because we have good mixture of people around the club. Craig Shipman is a great coach, I have good relationships with the players and they trust and respect me. Scouse has been brilliant in managing in his first spell as a gaffer and the lads enjoy playing for him. Also, behind the scenes everyone at the club hard work helps us on the pitch, from Dave the chairman down. Q. Finally, what do you believe the team can achieve come the end of the season, and how important will three points in today’s match be for both teams as the race for the playoffs heats up? A. Obviously we are aiming for the playoffs and today is crucial points for both sides, but if we finish in top half of table come end of season then we have more than exceeded expectations. On our budget it just shows what can be achieved through hard work and application as a club.

ON THIS DAY 7TH MARCH 1965 Last weekend, we saw Liverpool’s long 44 game unbeaten run come abruptly to a halt when they were stunned by lowly Watford in the Premier League. It seems fitting then, that I should be today writing about another lengthy, seemingly never ending unbeaten being brought to an end. On 7th March 1965, Atletico Madrid walked off of the pitch at the Santiago Bernabeu having beaten their city rivals, Real, 1-0. The victory for Atletico ended a shattering string of 121 unbeaten league matches, a streak that stretched back over 8 years to the 1956/57 season. Los Galatico’s run started on 17th February 1957 when they defeated Deportivo 1-0. This was followed by wins against bitter rivals Barcelona, Valencia and Celta Vigo as Madrid marched on to their fifth La Liga title. They then continued to make the Bernabeu

an impenetrable fortress for the next seven seasons, winning the league in five of them. Their biggest wins in this mammoth unbeaten run came against Las Palmas (10-1 in January 1959) and Elche (11-2 in the 1960). The unbeaten run is made even more impressive when you consider that out of the 121 games, only nine of them were draws. Sevilla were the most successful team in this time, they manage two draws in October 1960 and April 1964. On this day in 1965, the unbeaten run was destined to come to an end during the Madrid Derby. Atletico travelled to the Bernabeu as underdogs but managed to escape with an unlikely 1-0 victory to end Real’s remarkable unbeaten run on their home ground. The defeat didn’t effect Real, however, and they continued to march on to an 11th league title.

A few years back, a manager - who will remain nameless - of a then-Conference club finished giving his post-match interview. His side had just lost an FA Trophy quarterfinal. He’d said all the things you’d expect. Disappointed that his side had been below par, frustrated at the goals they’d conceded and rued the missed opportunity of a trip to Wembley. Then, after checking the assembled press had got what they needed and all dictaphones were off, he cheered, ‘I’m so glad we’re out!’ In truth, you could partly see his point. They were going for promotion, something the club desperately wanted and the additional games could have been a tipping point. But the Trophy has had a bit of a kicking in recent years. Managers moaning about fixture pile-ups, calls for it to become a midweek competition, there was even a spell when the final was moved to March in a bid to help those Step 1 clubs. Thankfully the FA have held their ground and moving the finals back to Wembley in May as they have been in recent years since the inception of Non-League Finals Day - has restored the showpiece final to its rightful place. And it’s a competition that has thrown up some wonderful stories. Not least this season with the incredible run of Step 4 duo Halesowen Town and Aveley. Both caused upsets on their way to the quarter-final, where Aveley finally bowed out in front of 500 travelling fans at Notts County. Manager Keith Rowland couldn’t have been

prouder of his players and spoke about how it has helped their league form. Now their focus returns to winning promotion from the BetVictor Isthmian Division One North. For Halesowen the journey, remarkably, continues. An extra-time win against Barnet keeps their dream alive and is conjuring memories of their famous past when they were a big Non-League hitter in the 70s and 80s. No one would have called the Yeltz reaching the final four. But 13 games later - including replays - Paul Smith’s side are a two-legged semi-final away from reaching Wembley. At the time of writing they don’t know who their semi opponent will be. National League South Concord Rangers saw their quarterfinal with Step 3 Royston postponed at the weekend. Both those sides are also enjoying fantastic runs of their own. It’s been the year of the underdog in Non-League’s top cup comp. On the face of it, all three will be thinking they’re unlikely to get a better chance of getting to the famous stadium. National League pair Harrogate Town and Notts County make up the other semi. But the unpredictability is what makes the football so exciting. One lucky club will be climbing the Wembley steps victorious not too long from now. Yes, there will be a knock-on effect with their league fixtures. But what a great problem to have - if you get there. by Matt Badcock

20. The Modernisation of Programmes in the 1970’s The post-1966 World Cup boom beginning to fade, football entered the 1970’s realising that modern marketing and commercial techniques would have to be applied to the sport to enable it to compete with the growing number of alternative pastimes and leisure pursuits. This brought about a radical transformation in the role and format of matchday programmes, coincidental with the first sponsored football tournaments. Initially, these took the form of brand-new competitions - as opposed to sponsors attaching their names to established tournaments - and so was born the Watney Cup in England, and shortly afterwards the Dryborough Cup in Scotland. To link the countries, and Northern and southern Ireland, the Texaco Cup was established. Suddenly, more and different programmes were being made available for collectors. European ties had been added to the normal domestic staple diet in the 15 years since 1955, and now came additional tournaments and intercountry fixtures such as Wolves v Derry City, Airdrie v Ballymena United, Motherwell v Spurs and St Johnstone v Ipswich. The brewers Watney broke new ground with programmes for their pre-season tournaments, which were in stylised form and published on behalf of the sponsors, rather than the home club. Similarly, Texaco provided a common style of outer pages for their tournament programmes, although the host club was left to its own devices in regards to

internal pages. One or two clubs, perhaps slightly pretentiously, began to call their programmes “match day magazines”, and they were certainly increasing in size - and cover price. Gloss paper became widespread; print techniques improved with the move away from letterpress to litho, and so photographs became a better and more prominent feature. Colour began to creep in, spreading from the First Division down through the leagues as the decade progressed. Coventry City, programme pioneers in the 1960’s, continued to explore new avenues in the 1970’s. They took the “magazine” concept quite literally by producing a very large page-size programme, even bigger than today’s brochure sized cup final issues, which featured “lifestyle” articles, loosely related to football, to complement the standard contents. An example of this was the back page, full colour photograph of a “glamour girl”, posing chastely. It is interesting to note that few, if any, clubs followed this “laddish” route, and certainly not in the last couple of decades. To modern eyes, 1970’s programmes look brief and inadequate, but contrast them to the issues of the previous decade, and you will see that clubs were beginning to pay more than lip service to modern presentation and marketing techniques.
