MANAGER'S NOTES MARK BENTLEY

Hello everyone and welcome to today's match against Dereham Town. After the huge disappointment of the 3-0 defeat here against Hullbridge Sports, it's great to come into this match following two good wins away from home. I've had to make some tough decisions since and have some honest conversations since the Hullbridge match, and I'm pleased that this has sparked a reaction from the lads. They were all hurting after the Hullbridge loss, worked extremely hard in training during the week and played extremely well against one of the best teams in the league. I was pleased to be able to bring Darren Phillips into the squad and those that have seen him play so far will agree that he gives us a different dimension. The challenge is there for Michael Finneran and Alex Stephenson to reclaim their places, and knowing both of them I think this is a challenge that they will relish. Both are very good players and certainly aren't the only reason that we haven't kept a league clean sheet until the Bury match all season, but sometimes you need to make a change to shake things up a bit and the points return since seems to have reflected this. We moved on to Soham Town Rangers on Tuesday night, and if we thought that the pitch at Bury was difficult then we hadn't seen anything yet!

It was nearly impossible to play football on the playing surface as it was, and all in all I'd say it's probably the most surreal match I have been involved in. We dominated early on and then fell behind, only for them to receive two straight red cards and go into half time with nine men. Our eyes lit up when they went down to nine and we were trying to rush things, throwing bodies forwards and actually making it a bit easier for them to defend in their 4-3-1 formation. At half time we spoke about showing patience and looking for the opportunities to overload them, and sure enough the lads stuck to the plan and got their rewards. We still need to work on our game management, as after going 2-1 in the 92nd minute we continued to attack rather than keep the ball. In doing this we left ourselves vulnerable, and they did create a couple of chances which would have been a disaster had one gone in. It didn't cost us on this occasion, but we must learn as it might in the future. It's great to win away matches but it's the games here that I really want to win in front of our own supporters. Get behind the lads and hoepfully we can repay you. Enjoy the match,

Mark

AWAY DAY REVIEW GLEN ECKETT

With Simon unable to produce his normal away day review due to a laptop problem, usually I'd simply produce the programme without the column. However, after picking up six points from two of our longest trips of the season, I've decided tog my very best Simon impression and give you my take on two successful and yet contrasting days. Saturday 4th January Bury Town, The Denny Bros Stadium Bury away is always a highlight of the season as an away day, but not for footballing reasons. The only time we've ever won there, I was stung in the throat by a wasp while singing and the only reason we scored was that the goalkeeper smashed the ball into Spencer Bellotti and it went in. In fact, in ten previous attempts, we'd only ever not lost on two occasions. Now, back in the day a trip to Bury would have been an alcohol-fueled afternoon involving a tour around some of the local pubs before continuing in the clubhouse and on the coach home. Times have moved on, and I can only imagine what 21-year-old Glen from our first visit in 2006 would have thought if he'd known that 13 years later, his idea of an enjoyable trip to Bury would involve a look round the impessive St. Edmundsbury

Cathedral and surrounding ruins. One thing I learnt was that the reason Bury St Edmunds is named as such is because it is where they buried St Edmund...seems obvious when you know! After having some lunch in the town centre I remembered that there was a football match on and made my way to the ground. A decent ground which I can only criticise for having a gents toilet sign that is a man wearing a pair of baggy shorts which looks like a skirt. I know exactly where the gents is in their clubhouse, but literally every time I stop at the door in fear that I'm about to walk into the ladies. The last time I did that was in Zinc nightclub in Southend in my college days when the toilet door signs were the Mars and Venus symbols. I'd had a few drinks, didn't know which was which, took a gamble and guessed incorrectly. I sobered up immediately and hid in a cubicle for ages, eventually plucking up the courage to make a run for it and somehow making it back out without being seen. I manage to surpress the memory of this traumatic night, but every year a trip to Bury undoes all of the therapy. As for the match, we were actually pretty good! Having eld them at 0-0 until half time, we scored early in the second and then looking fairly comfortable until injury time. Last year they equalised in the

94th minute to draw 1-1. This year they had two amazing chances, but thankfully the ball stayed out on both occasions, the second thanks to an unbelievable miss that trickled along the line before being collected by one-match wonder Emmanuel Idem in goal. The celebrations at the final whistle were great to see, with the frustration of the recent defeats to Tilbury and Hullbridge released by all of the players and supporters behind the goal.

and White was oozing confidence. The captain was enjoying teaching his young apprentice a lesson, racing into a fourball lead and starting to mention the dreaded seven ball. However, Kane had other ideas, staging a rousing comeback and finishing off with a black with a victory that you could tell hurt the skipper's pride much more than he was prepared to let on in front of the rest of the squad.

Tuesday 7th January Soham Town Rangers, Julius Martin Lane Leaving work at 16:00, I arrived at the stadium just over two hours later. It's fair to say that when it comes to watching Canvey, I am one of life's pessimists. However, buoyed by the impressive performance at Bury Town three days earlier, I actually went into this one with a belief that we'd get something from the match. Before turning into the car park, it was impossible to miss the house opposite which was so heavily covered in Christmas lights and decorations that it was have put Clark Griswold to shame. It turns out that this is the home of a retired couple who arrange the display each year to raise money for charities after they helped their grandson recover from a serious form of epilepsy. I was going to give them a bit of stick, but with that in mind and the fact that I'm not Ricky Gervais, I think I'll leave it! The clubhouse is a good size and with two pool tables, one of which James White was challenging teammates to a match on. After beating Sam Bantick he invited Kane Gilbert to the table,

The game itself was a strange one, with Soham taking an undeserved lead before having two players show straight red cards in the first half. If anything, this made me less confident that we would win the match given our appalling record when playing with a numerical advantage. A truly bizarre event took place in the stand in the second half when one of their players who had been sent off refused to give the ball back. This lead to a bit of a melee which threatened to be quite serious but thankfully didn't escalate. It did however lead to 16 minutes of injury time in which we scored twice and killed my match report. After finishing it off in the clubhouse I left the gound, said my goodbyes to Santa, his reindeer and the various snowmen and women and headed off back to Leigh-on-Sea. Walking through my front door at midnight brought to an end a long but enjoyable 330-miles following the mighty Gulls on the road.

MATCH REPORT BURY TOWN (A) Bury Town 0 Canvey Island 1 Sam Bantick (53') Attendance: 482 Starting XI: Emmanuel Idem, Dan Humphreys, George Woodward, James White (c), Darren Phillips, Matt Lock, Rob Lacey, Albert Levett, Jason Hallett, Sam Bantick, Ryan Melaugh. Subs: Kane Gilbert, Tobi Joseph, Michael Finneran, Alex Stephenson. Canvey Island's rollercoaster of a season continued with a 1-0 win away to high-flying Bury Town at The Denny Bros Stadium on Saturday. The was only the Gulls' second win in eleven attempts away to Bury, with a second half strike from Sam Bantick and a hard-working performance throughout bringing the points back to Essex. Manager Mark Bentley rang the changes after the 3-0 defeat at home to Hullbridge Sports a week earlier, introducing five new players into the starting XI. Goalkeeper Lamar Johnson missed out through an injury picked up in training which will see him sidelined. In his place came 21-year-old keeper Emmanuel Idem who has previously been with Maccles-

field Town and is currently on trial with West Ham United. Central defensive pairing Michael Finneran and Alex Stephenson were both dropped to the bench, with James White dropping back to partner debutant Darren Phillips. Matt Lock came back into the side to fill the gap left in central midfield left by White. The other changes were in midfield where Ryan Melaugh and Rob Lacey came in for Kane Gilbert and the departed Josh Hutchinson. Albert Levett registered the first shot on goal in the third minute after a knock down from Sam Bantick down the left. Levett got a clean connection on his shot which was straight at goalkeeper Daniel Barden who saved. Up the other end, a ball across the edge of the box from the left found its way to Ryan Jolland on 11 minutes, but his shot was saved by Emmanuel Idem above his head to prevent the ball from finding the top corner. The home side were enjoying plenty of possession in the attacking third without being able to seriously test Emmanuel Idem, looking particularly dangerous from wide areas. Canvey did manage to warm the hands of the keeper on the half hour mark when Jason Hallett brought the ball down for Albert Levett. The midfielder headed the

ball through the Blues’ defence for Sam Bantick to run onto, but under pressure his low shot from 20 yards was straight at Daniel Barden who saved. Bury did create a good chance of their own three minutes later when the ball was clipped over from the right and met by the head of Ryan Stafford. The right back nodded across goal at the front post and narrowly wide of the target. The Gulls took the lead eight minutes into the second half when the ball was poked through the home defence for Sam Bantick to run onto. Bantick had a defender in close quarters but kept his composure to slot the ball across goal and into the bottom corner. They had another chance on 58 minutes when they were awarded a free kick 10 yards inside the Bury half on the left. The ball into the box was a good one but narrowly evaded three Canvey players before going behind for a goal kick. On 64 minutes Canvey were awarded a free kick 25 yards from goal in a central position after Ryan Jolland had pulled back Jason Hallett by the arm, earning himself a yellow card in the process. James White hit the free kick goalwards which deceived Daniel Barden diving to his left, bouncing once before hitting the outside of the post.

Bury started to build pressure as the match entered the final quarter of an hour in search of an equaliser. On 83 minutes a ball over from the right was headed away by a defender but only as far as Ryan Jolland just inside the box. Jolland shaped his body well and unleashed a volley which looked to be hitting the target before catching a deflection and going behind for a corner. The hosts had two superb chances in the dying moments, both in similar circumstances and involving Ryan Stafford. On 89 minutes a low ball from the left found Stafford in acres of space on the far side. He hit the target but his shot was brilliantly blocked by George Woodward inside the six yard box. Then, deep into stoppage time, an identical ball found Stafford once again, this time producing a magnificent save from Emmanuel Idem who had been a spectator for most of the match. The ball looped up into the air and stayed in play, looking to anyone in the stadium that Ross Crane would tuck it away at the far post. However, somehow Crane managed to steer the ball across the line from point blank range and into the grateful arms of Idem who was still on the floor from the save.

MATCH REPORT

Canvey Island 3 Jason Hallett (71', 90+2') Kane Gilbert (90+10'p) Attendance: 118 Starting XI: Rob Budd, Dan Humphreys, George Woodward, James White (c), Darren Phillips (Off 90+1'), Alex Stephenson, Rob Lacey, Albert Levett (Off 89'), Jason Hallett, Sam Bantick, Ryan Melaugh (Off 63'). Subs: Kane Gilbert (On 89'), Tobi Joseph (On 63'), Michael Finneran (On 90+1'). Canvey Island recorded a dramatic 3-1 win away to Soham Town Rangers in the BetVictor Isthmian League North on Tuesday night. Manager Mark Bentley made two changes from the side that won 1-0 away to Bury Town three days earlier. Goalkeeper Rob Budd returned for a second spell, replacing Emmanuel Idem who had filled in for the injured Lamar Johnson on Saturday. Matt Lock missed out through illness, with James White pushing forwards to take his place in the centre of midfield.

Centre back Alex Stephenson came into the side to partner Darren Phillips in defence as a result. Canvey had the ball in the back of the net inside two minutes when a perfectly weighted ball from deep by James White went over the home defence and found Sam Bantick. The forward took a touch before tucking the ball into the bottom corner, but the assistant referee had raised his flag for offside to rule out the goal. They had a legitimate chance four minutes later when a miskick from Soham defender Charlie Johnson presented the ball to Jason Hallett. The forward managed to get a shot off, but by the time he had gained possession home goalkeeper Josh Pope had come off his line and smothered his effort. Hallett had another opportunity soon afterwards when a good cross from the left found him unmarked in the middle of goal, but he will have been disappointed with his header which went over the crossbar. Soham had their first chance in the 20th minute when midfielder Alfie Connor hit a right-footed shot from distance which Rob Budd saved and held high above his head. The hosts took the lead on 24 minutes when a dangerous cross was sent over

with pace from the right wing. Centre back Darren Phillips got his head to the ball, but unfortunately for him sent it past Budd and into his own net. The complexion of the match changed in a four-minute spell soon after when Soham were reduced to nine men. Firstly, on 29 minutes left back Callum Russell flew in with a late challenge on Rob Lacey ten yards inside the Canvey half. Referee Emily Heaslip was well positioned and wasted no time in showing Russell a straight red card. Soham manager Rob Mason will have wanted his side to keep their composure and regroup after this setback, but this was not the case. On 33 minutes Alfie Connor lunged in with a similarly poor challenge on the opposite wing, and once again the referee gave the Soham man his marching orders. Despite this heavy numerical advantage, Canvey struggled to seriously test goalkeeper Josh Pope, brother of England international Nick. The closest they came was on 44 minutes when Albert Levett’s low, skidding shot from the edge of the box was saved by Pope low down in front of him. Mark Bentley will have hoped for his side to pepper the goal with shots in the second half, but despite huge amounts of possession, Canvey struggled to turn this into any clean-cut chances for 25 minutes of the restart. One factor that wasn’t helping Canvey build attacks was the bobbly playing surface. It was therefore no surprise that when they did equalise, it was from a ball in the air. An excellent cross from the right by

Dan Humphreys found Jason Hallett at the back post. Having missed a similar chance in the first half, this time he met the ball with a cushioned header back across goal and inside the post to score. Soon afterwards a cross from the opposite wing by George Woodward found the head of Sam Bantick, but this time Pope was able to produce a save. The match was overshadowed by a nasty incident on 78 minutes when the ball was kicked into the stand. Soham’s Callum Russell, who had been dismissed in the first half, taking the ball and putting it under his chair. A supporter went to go and get the ball, at which point an altercation ensued which involved players and supporters from both sides. The situation was brilliantly brought under control by a referee’s assessor in the stands, with George Woodward receiving a yellow card for leaving the pitch. The match calmed down and it looked as though it was heading for a draw, but Canvey had other ideas. A cross from the right to the back post was headed across goal by Tobi Joseph, forwards by Alex Stephenson and then slid home by Jason Hallett from close range for his second of the evening. Soham were then forced down the eight men as injuries took hold after they had made all of their substitutions. The points were sealed in the tenth of sixteen additional minutes at the end of the second half when a cross from the right hit the hand of defender Ally Conway. Kane Gilbert stepped up and rifled the ball into the bottom corner.

PLAYER INTERVIEW DARREN PHILLIPS Ahead of today's match, we spoke with recent signing Darren Phillips about his start to life at Park Lane. Q. You've recently joined the club having most recently played for Basildon United. How have you found life at Park Lane so far and how have you settled into the squad?

won both matches and that the opposition haven't managed to score yet - the only goal we've conceded was from my head! I couldn't have asked for anything more than two wins from two, but the challenge is now for us to turn this into a proper run of results.

A. It’s been a great week and I've really enjoyed it so far. All the players and staff have made me feel very welcome and I have settled in nicely.

Q. In your two matches so far you've played in front of two different goalkeepers and with two different central defensive partners. Has this made the process of bedding in to a new team even more challenging than it normally is?

Q. You've helped the team to two away wins in your two matches so far, also picking up our first league clean sheet of the season on your debut against Bury Town. How happy are you to have started your Canvey career in such a positive manner?

A. Playing with two different keepers and two different centre backs isn’t always easy, but you just have to get on with it and work hard. At Canvey we have a great team and all work hard for each other, so as long as we do that then I should be able to play with anyone.

A. I’ve been brought in to try and keep clean sheets which is the platform that any team needs to be successful. I'm happy that we've

Q. There is plenty of competition for places in the squad at the moment, with four players able to play centre back. How much do

you think this will benefit the team as players look to gain or retain a place in the starting XI? A. I think that competition for places is always a good thing, because you know that if you're not playing well or doing enough for the team that there’s is always a couple of players that can take your spot. The team spirit here is really high at the moment and everyone works with each other to get the best out of them.

Q. Finally, after two away matches this will be your first match at Park Lane. How much are you looking forward to making your home debut in front of the Canvey faithful? A. I’m buzzing! Canvey is such a big club with such great fans and I can’t wait to make my home debut and hopefully get the three points.

ISTHMIAN UPDATE LEAGUE NEWS Cheshunt BetVictor Isthmian League Premier Division club Cheshunt have taken striker Norman Wabo on an initial month's loan from Vanarama National League South side Dartford. The 21-year-old signed for Dartford in August 2019 following his release from SkyBet League One side Southend United at the end of the 2018/19 season. Wabo was no stranger to non-League football, however, having had loan spells with Cambridge City, Ebbsfleet United, Braintree Town and Maidstone United whilst on the Shrimpers books. Dartford manager Steve King told the club website: “Norman has not had the game time he needs and it is important he goes out on loan and keeps up his match fitness and scores some goals. I wish him well and hope he comes back firing and ready to help us in the latter part of the season.” Romford After BetVictor Isthmian League Premier Division club Kingstonian had announced the departure of striker Louie Theophanous, he has now been revealed as one of two new signings for ambitious Glen Tamplin at Isthmian League North strugglers Romford. The 28-year-old prolific marksman is wellknown to Tamplin from his time at Billericay Town. Theophanous has extensive experience at Vanarama National League South level with

the likes of Chelmsford City, Farnborough, Staines Town (where he won the Conference South `golden boot` in 2013/14) and Bromley. He originally joined Kingstonian on loan from Billericay in January 2018 before moving to Woking. When the season ended, K’s managed to snap him up on a permanent basis and he has notched 18 goals this season to date. Also joining Boro is well-travelled defender Hamilton Bunga. He signed for Southern League Premier Central outfit Leiston in October 2019. He had previously plied his trade in the Essex area with Canvey Island, Barkingside and Great Wakering Rovers. He switched to Rovers from Bedfont Sports in November 2018 having previously worn the colours of Northwood, Arlesey Town, Staines Town, Ware and Kingstonian. Enfield Town BetVictor Isthmian League Premier Division club Enfield Town have announced that striker Muhammadu Faal has been signed by SkyBet League One side Bolton Wanderers on an initial 18-month contract. The Hackney-born 22-year-old joined Enfield from Isthmian Premier rivals Kingstonian in December 2018. He started his career with Italian club L’Aquila, making a number of appearances in Serie D, before joining Dulwich Hamlet at the start of the 2017/18 campaign. He moved from Champion Hill to Kingsto-

nian, initially on loan, towards the end of that season and since moving to the Queen Elizabth II Stadium, has notched 30 goals in 27 appearances. He has been on trial with the Trotters in recent weeks, turning out and impressing in the club`s under-23 side. Brightlingsea Regent BetVictor Isthmian League Premier Division club Brightlingsea Regent have signed Jerry Kamanzi on loan from Southern League Premier Division Central side Leiston until the end of the season. The 22-year-old Ugandan-born midfielder has played 14 times for the Suffolk outfit this season, scoring one goal. Kamanzi joined the Blues in July 2019 from league rivals Needham Market. He was a fan favourite with the Marketmen, making 39 appearances, scoring 2 goals and becoming a fan fabourite at Bloomfields. His other former clubs include Brentford, AFC Sudbury, Colchester United, Maldon & Tiptree and Thurrock/ Regent manager Kem Izzet told the club website: “I am looking forward to working with Jerry and adding him to our squad, he is a player I have admired for some time, and believe he will be a great addition.” Faversham Town Vastly experienced and much-travelled forward Paul Hayes has signed for BetVictor Isthmian League South East club Faversham Town after a short spell with Southern Counties East League Division One side Meridian VP. The veteran 36-year-old, who is now a football agent, started his career with Norwich City but left in 2002 without managing to break through at Carrow Road. He signed for Scunthorpe United and went

on to play 99 times for the Iron, scoring 27 goals. He moved to Barnsley in the summer of 2005 and totalled 78 appearances and 13 goals for the Yorkshire side. He re-signed for Scunthorpe in July 2007 and added 132 games to his total and another 33 goals. Moves to Charlton Athletic, Brentford and a third stint at Scunthorpe followed before he signed Wycombe Wanderers for a second time. He first arrived at Adams Park in a blistering loan spell from Charlton in 2012, scoring 6 times in as many matches, and was Gareth Ainsworth’s first signing in the summer of 2014 at the start of an exciting new era for the club. As captain, Hayes scored 15 times as the Chairboys went on to reach the League Two play-off final in his first season and continued to net important goals over the next two years, including two memorable strikes in the thrilling Emirates FA Cup tie at Tottenham Hotspur. In September 2017 he was released by the Chairboys and signed for National League South side Hemel Hempstead Town. He returned to League football with Newport County in October 2017 and took his total of appearances in the pro game to 632 and 127 goals. He joined Isthmian League North outfit AFC Sudbury from Newport in the summer of 2018 and then signed for their league rivals Coggeshall Town in late November 2019. He made one appearance in the new Glen Tamplin era at Romford, ironically playing his only game against Coggeshall, before signing for Meridian VP. Source for all stories: Non League Today

CLUB HISTORY DEREHAM TOWN Dereham Town Football Club was founded in 1884, spending many of its early years in the local Norwich District and the Dereham & District Leagues. During these early years, the Club made its first appearance in the Norfolk Senior Cup Final, when they lost to C.E.Y.M.S., in 1891-92. Until 1965, the Club played in the Norfolk and Suffolk League prior to the formation of the Anglian Combination. In that transitional season Dereham Town won the Senior 'B' Division. In 1988-89 Dereham Town was relegated from the Premier Division of the Anglian Combination, thus losing their proud record of being the only Club to have never played outside the Premier Division since the League's formation in 1965. The following season Premier Division status was regained when the Division One title was claimed. In 1993-94, the Senior Knockout Cup was won for the first time when Wymondham Town were comprehensively beaten 3-0 in the Final. December 1996 saw the Club move from its previous home on the Council owned Recreation Ground into the plush surrounding of the new site at Aldiss

Park. The Club's first full season at Aldiss Park (1997/98) saw the dream become reality when Eastern Counties League status was achieved with the club winning a first Anglian Combination Premier Division title. This was achieved by going undefeated for the first twenty-two League games and remaining undefeated all season away from Aldiss Park. Not content with just the League title, the club also won the Don Frost Memorial Cup. The Club's opening season in Eastern Counties League football (1998/99) saw the club finish seventh in Division One and reach the inaugural Division One Knockout Cup Final where League Champions Clacton Town beat us. The Club also received the annual Jewson Sportsmanship Trophy. Season 1999/2000 saw the First Team again finish seventh in Division One whilst the Reserves were crowned Champions of Anglian Combination Division Three. For the second year running the Club again won the Jewson Sportsmanship Trophy. At the start of season 2000/2001, Norwich City Football Club visited

Aldiss Park for a pre-season friendly and although the 'Magpies' lost 9-0, a new record attendance of 1800 was established. That season saw the First Team secure promotion to the (then) Jewson Premier Division. For the third year in succession, the Club received the Jewson Sportsmanship Trophy, along with the hospitality award and match day programme award. In early July 2001, Norwich City again graced Aldiss Park with their presence and for the second year in succession a new record attendance was set for Aldiss Park, this time over 3000 witnessed a 3-0 win for the Canaries. Their first season in the Premier Division saw Dereham finish in a creditable 12th position. Norwich City again graced Aldiss Park in July 2005 when almost 3000 spectators saw the Canaries overcome the Magpies 6-0. In the League an inconsistent first-half of the 2005/06 season was followed by an excellent second-half which saw Dereham suffer only three defeats from midDecember and which culminated in the winning of the Norfolk Senior Cup at Carrow Road, where Norwich United were defeated 1-0. Eventual twelfth place in the League equalled the Clubs highest ever finish in the top division. Season 2006/07 was the most successful in the Clubs history to date. The Norfolk Senior Cup was retained with a 1-0 victory over eventual

League Champions Wroxham, sixth spot in the League was our highest ever finish and our Under-18s claimed the Ridgeons Youth Cup with a 3-1 victory against Blackstones. The Club was also awarded the Ridgeons ‘Integrity in Football’ trophy. In March 2008 former Magpies player, Matt Henman, replaced Rob Taylor as manager after captain Adam Gusterson had briefly held the reigns as caretaker manager. Fourth place in the League was achieved with victory over Mildenhall Town in the last match of last season. Season 08/09 again saw a fourth place finish in the Ridgeons Premier Division, a run to the fifth round of the FA Vase and, as in the previous season, a disappointing defeat in the semi-final of the Norfolk Senior Cup. Our Reserves finished fifth in their first season in the Ridgeons Reserve section. Season 09/10 was a good one for the Club despite the First Team having, by their recent high standards, a mediocre campaign eventually finishing tenth in the Ridgeons Premier Division and, for the third consecutive season, falling at the semi-final stage of the Norfolk Senior Cup. However, our Reserves finished second on goal difference in the Reserve Division North, the A Team secured their highest League position for some years, finishing third, also winning the Dick Davey Ambulance Cup and the Fen Regis Invitation Shield. Dereham

Towns Under-18s won the Ridgeons Youth League East Division, suffering only one defeat all season, and then triumphed in the Championship playoff defeating Huntingdon Town 2-1. In season 2010/11 the Magpies were runners up in the Ridgeons Premier League and won the Norfolk Senior Cup at Carrow Road, defeating a strong Kings Lynn Town side. The Reserves and Youth teams continued to progress with the Youths winning the Ridgeons Youth Cup, and 5 of this team were in the Norfolk Under-18 side which won the FA County Youth Cup. Season 2011/12 was relatively disappointing with the side finishing in mid table in the League; however, the younger sides continued to thrive and hopefully many of these players will be pushing for a first team place in the future. Season 2012/13 saw the Magpies achieve their first promotion since 1997/98 when the Thurlow Nunn Eastern Counties League Premier Division title was won and, with the necessary ground improvements in place, promotion to the Ryman League was achieved. And with the FA relaxing the criteria for the admission of Reserve sides at step 6 Dereham Town Reserves were voted into the Thurlow Nunn First Division for season 2013/14. With both First and Reserve teams playing at their highest ever level, the

2013/14 season was eagerly anticipated. The First team experienced three defeats in their first four League matches but soon got to grips with the more physical aspects of step 4, thereafter losing only 10 of the next 42 games, eventually finishing the season in 7th place after briefly sitting in a play-off spot. The Reserves, with a predominantly young, development squad, were never likely to challenge at the top of the table, but neither were they embarrassed by any opponent. Season 2014/15 saw further consolidation in the Ryman League with a second successive 7th place finish in Division One North. A good run in the FA Cup came to an end at Conference North Boston United. For our Reserves the season was once more a struggle but the squad produced some fine football without securing the results their play often warranted. Our Under-18’s secured the Thurlow Nunn Youth League East Division title, by defeating perennial rivals Wroxham in the last match of the season. Another strong season in Ryman One North saw the Magpies end the 2015/16 season in 9th place. Again, a play-off place was briefly in view but in the event we finished 12 points off 5th place. However, the season ended on a high when a 2-0 victory against Ryman League bound Norwich United, at Carrow Road in May, secured the Norfolk Senior Cup for

the fourth time in 10 years. Our Reserves once again found themselves pitted against more experienced and wily opponents but faced up to the challenge admirably. The Under-18’s reached the Second Round of the FA Youth Cup, bowing out of the competition at Mansfield Town – losing 4-3 to an extra-time goal. On the way Peterborough United’s Under-18’s were defeated 2-1 at Aldiss Park. The 2016/17 season was ultimately a disappointing one as the Magpies ended the campaign in eighteenth place – the lowest finishing position since promotion to step 4 in 2013/14. As the season ended long-serving Club manager Matt Henman stepped down in order to take on a new challenge in Dubai. 2017/18 briefly saw the team head-

ing the Bostik Division One North, the Club’s highest ever position in the Non League System. After subsequently flirting with a play-off place a poor run of results during March and April saw an eventual eighth-place finish. In January 2019, following a run of poor results, manager Neal Simmons was replaced by former Magpies players Adam Gusterson and Olly Willis. The pair had jointly managed and taken Harleston Town from the Anglian Combination into step 6 football, winning both League and Cup on the way. The 2018/19 season did end on a high with an extra time victory in the Norfolk Senior Cup Final at Carrow Road, making it a fifth County title for the club.

PLAYER PROFILES DEREHAM TOWN Elliot Pride - Goalkeeper - Great organiser who has excellent distribution and one who the Club are delighted to retain for the 19/20 season. Aiden Way - Goalkeeper - Young keeper who is working his way through the club’s academy programme. Fantastic shot stopper. One to watch for the future. Matt Castellan - Defender - Commanding and ball-playing defender, Matt is back for his second spell at the club, having made 12 appearances for the Magpies during the 17/18 season. Joined last season from Kings Lynn Town and was a big part of consolidating the defence after he arrived. Charlie Dickerson - Defender - Current DESA student who has impressed in his first year in the Academy, making his first team debut in March 2019. A full back equally comfortable going forward as defending. Dion Frary - Defender - A versatile defender who can play anywhere across the backline, or as a holding midfielder. Dion joined us from King’s Lynn last season following a successful loan spell with the club in 2017. Sam Garner - Defender - Experienced full back who joined the club in the summer of 2017. A knee injury suffered through his first season has kept him sidelined for a number of months, but he has returned

this pre-season looking to reclaim his right back slot. Jake Imrie - Defender - Jake joins the club this summer from Harleston Town, combining once more with the management team of Adam and Olly. Jake’s signing in a Porto shirt ended up going viral leading to an unlikely friendship forming between the two clubs. Thomas Matthews - Defender - An well organised and exciting young defender equally at home at full back or centre half. Tom joined us this summer from Stowmarket. Adam Plumstead - Defender - A strong, no nonsense centre half, often dominates in the air. Adam joined us from Wroxham during last season and was an ever present in our successful County Cup run. Olly Willis - Defender - A versatile player combining this with his Assistant Manager role. A real fan favourite in his second spell at the club he offers great experience and cover for the team. Lewis Johnson - Defender/Midfielder - Another player who can play across defence or in a midfield role. Lewis joined the club during last season, having played in successive National Finals for Norfolk U18, captaining the side in his second season with them.

Robbie Linford - Defender/Midfielder - A youngster who has progressed through the club, offering reliability in midfield and defensive cover when required. Robbie rejoins the club this summer having been away at Stowmarket last season. Owen Murphy - Defender/Midfielder - An outstanding prospect who broke into the First Team whilst still at school in the 16/17 season, making over 50 first appearances before his 18th birthday. Equally at home at full back or in midfield, this could be a big break through season for Owen. Tomas Snapkauskas - Defender/Midfielder - Tomas joined the Magpies this season having played professionally in his native Lithuania, making over 100 appearances in A Lyga. A solid centre back, who can switch to full back or holding midfield as required. Shaun Wones - Defender/Midfielder Experienced and versatile player, equally at home in midfield or defence, with a knack for scoring. Possesses good technical ability and is an organiser and leader. David Hinton - Midfielder - Team captain, and 2018/19 player of the season who is comfortable on the ball and regularly puts in consistent performances. Leads by example and pops up with important goals from time to time. Adam Hipperson - Midfielder - The sought after wide player joined the Club in the summer of 2018 from Norwich United. Adam is a direct forward whose pace and power helped the team pull away to safety last season and he is looking to build on this in his second season with the club.

Rhys Logan - Midfielder - A direct and quick winger who creates a number of goal scoring opportunities for the team. Rhys suffered from an injury early last season but came back to help in the relegation battle and he is working hard to further improve that this season. Eoin MacQuaid - Midfielder - A direct midfielder, with a great eye for goal, and a set piece delivery to be admired. Eoin joins us from King’s Lynn Town this summer, having helped them to promotion last year. Adam Smith - Midfielder - Adam returned to the Club for the 18/19 season. A midfield player who is comfortable on the ball and has lots of experience at this level of football. A club stalwart who gives real dependability and consistency in midfield. Ryan Crisp - Forward - A powerful striker who is as good as anyone in the Isthmian League with his back to goal. Ryan showed glimpses of returning to his very best at times during a difficult season last year and expectations are high for the coming season. Jamie Forshaw - Forward - His work rate sets the tone for the team and he has a knack for scoring important goals. ON THIS DAY

28TH DECEMBER 1911 I know 2014 is not really that historical for this column but this is a story that really needs to be seen. I am pleased to shout from the rooftops that over the last year I have shed a little over 6 stone. At my biggest, however, I was still able to fit through turnstiles at football which is more than can be said for the hero of the story today. Step forward Mr Lee Coolahan. On this day in 2014, Norwich City made the journey to Goodison Park where they met Everton in the Premier League. Amongst the contingent of Canaries fans who travelled up from Norfolk was Lee Coolahan who was about to have a slightly embarrasing afternoon but an afternoon that would change his life. Coolahan approached the turnstiles at Goodison full of enthusiasm but things would soon take a turn for the worse. When trying to go through the turnstile, Coolahans rather large 33 stone body became stuck and stewards were called to help him out where he was taken through to the ground via a special entrance. Coolahan said “It took two stewards to release the emergency mechanism and help me out; 400 fans waiting at the blocked turnstiles listened on as the stewards shouted to each other that they needed to open the special entrance because I was ‘too fat’” The red faced Coolahan took his seat only for his day to

get worse as Norwich were beaten 2-0 by the Toffees. This tale, however, has a happy ending. Getting stuck in the Goodison Park turnstiles was a turning point in Coolahan's life. In the following year, he lost a whopping 17 stone and dropped down from 33 stone to just over 16 stone. The story puts harks me back to when my own father got stuck in the turnstile at Hereford. A moment I have never let him forget.

14. Setting the Scene Today’s newspapers and magazines may use modern colour print and photographic techniques, but they would still be recognisable to a Victorian transported by time-travel to 1998. Similarly with other periodicals, and certainly with books. It is most unlikely, however, that our time-warped visitor would recognise the printed word as sold to him at a football match. The matchday programme has undergone dramatic change since it first emerged as a means of identifying players in the 1870’s. Today, it is a glossy, colourful and sophisticated communications and marketing vehicle, sold in prodigious quantities and for sums far removed from the penny or halfpenny of Victorian days. In the course of this series articles, the development of matchday programmes will be chronicled, and put into the perspective of contemporary life and the game they represent. Avid readers of modern programmes may bemoan the prevalence of advertisements, but these vital fund-raisers become fascinating historical markers as we roll back the years. The local butcher, baker and candle-stick maker were present in just about every club programme, as was the local brewery, theatre (and then cinema), newspa-

pers and menswear shops. Local industries were prominent amongst the advertisements - razor blades in the Sheffield clubs’ programmes, vehicle and cycle accessory manufacturers in the Birmingham clubs’ issues, ship-builders advertising for workers on Clydeside. We can watch local economies evolve over the life of a club’s matchday programme by reading the adverts. Trends within the game are, of course, apparent in editorials and features, while great teams, marvellous players, and some unhappy times in the game may be recalled from the playing and managerial personnel listed in the programmes. If the content of programmes down the years is varied, then so are the formats and styles used by clubs and associations. From the simple teamsheet of Victorian days, listing players and their distinguishing features, to the colourful, glossy booklets of the 1990’s - the history of football programmes is as varied and interesting as the game itself, as we will discover over the course of this season.
