MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR OF THE BOARD This past year marked a pivotal milestone in Canucks Autism Network’s history: A decade of “I CAN”.

The 10th anniversary was celebrated year-round, with a special nod to the occasion at the CAN Birthday Festival in July in the City of Surrey. In addition to a day of festivities, the event served as a launching pad for a variety of accessibility initiatives, including the unveiling of CAN Sensory Friendly Spaces.

Another highlight from the year included our third Reveal Gala which transformed Rogers Arena into the bustling seaside resort of Saint-Tropez and raised an impressive $1.123 million for CAN. We further marked the milestone with an office move which will support CAN’s growing operations for years to come.

As we embark on the next decade, we will continue to build on the strong support, partnerships and momentum garnered throughout CAN’s history of transformation. From our beginnings as a small, grassroots autism charity to our current status as a leader and change maker, CAN has proven its ability to inspire change, inclusion, and ongoing collaboration.

Since CAN’s inception in 2008, we have had the privilege of witnessing thousands of children, youth and young adults with autism break barriers and thrive in our programs. Many of these individuals have since progressed from attending CAN programs to joining competitive sports teams and participating in community activities. Their experience with CAN empowered them to build confidence and challenge their limits in all aspects of life, proving that CAN’s impact extends far beyond the walls of our programs.

Through training, CAN is able to reach remote communities and empower community recreation providers, coaches, teachers, first responders and businesses to join us in creating a future where every individual with autism is understood, accepted and supported in all community spaces.

NEW POSITION AT CAN

ESTABLISHMENT OF YOUTH AND YOUNG ADVISORY GROUP

With support provided through a multi-year grant from North Growth Foundation, CAN introduced the role of Diversity and Inclusion Coordinator which welcomed longtime CAN Program Staff and Support Team Member, Robbie Hsieh, to spearhead inclusive hiring across the organization.

CAN recognizes that individuals with autism should be leaders in our organization and have a voice in developing and delivering programs.

To achieve this objective, beginning in the summer of 2018, CAN participants ages 13+ were invited to join CAN’s Youth and Young Adult Advisory Group, and continue to provide regular direction and feedback to the program team. Several youth and young adults have joined programs as staff, volunteers, and activity leaders.

DIVERSITY & INCLUSION COORDINATOR

Since taking on the role, Robbie has worked to develop accessible recruitment processes, supportive employment opportunities and youth and young adult programming focused on leadership and personal development.

In addition, Robbie represented CAN on the organizing committee of the Autism in the Workplace for Employers conference.

RECOGNITION AS AN INCLUSIVE EMPLOYER CAN was honoured as a Workplace Diversity and Inclusion Champion finalist under the Social Enterprise or Non-Profit Organization category for the UnTapped: BC Workplace Inclusion Awards 2018.

CREATION OF DIVERSITY & INCLUSION COMMITTEE The Diversity & Inclusion Committee was created to reflect CAN’s core value of accessibility. The Committee works to increase accessibility across the organization, whether online, at events, in programs, or in-office.

Since forming the committee, CAN has implemented a number of recommendations from viaSport’s LGBTQI2S guidelines and has taken steps to improve accessibility in digital communications.

CAN BIRTHDAY FESTIVAL SURREY, BC

On Saturday, July 7th, 2018, thousands gathered at Surrey Civic Plaza for the CAN Birthday Festival, in celebration of our 10-year anniversary. In anticipation of the event, CAN mailed out handcrafted birthday invitations personally inviting over 1,700 children with autism to attend the party, marking the first-ever birthday invitation for many of the recipients. In addition to a day of festivities, the Birthday Festival served as a launching pad for a variety of accessibility initiatives, including the unveiling of the CAN Sensory Friendly Spaces program.

TRAINING EXPANSION

• CAN programs continue to act as a springboard for our members to access community-based activities and sports teams

• CAN delivered 116 workshops last year across BC, including the North (Fort St John, Fort Nelson, Gitlaxt’aamiks, Prince George, Prince Rupert), the the Kootenays (Castlegar, Nelson), and the Interior (Lower Silmilkameen, Kamloops, Kelowna, Williams Lake)

• CAN received a contract to provide training to Boys & Girls Clubs of Canada leaders, funded by Jumpstart, and in partnership with Sport for Life Society and Active Living Alliance for Canadians with a Disability • This past year saw a record number of Provincial Sport Organizations included in CAN’s summer camp programs, including BC Athletics, Canoe Kayak BC, Curl BC, Tennis BC, and Golf BC. In addition, key partnerships were developed with a number of local municipalities

• CAN continued to develop strategic relationships locally, provincially and nationally, with presentations at a number of conferences including Sport for Life, Physical & Health Education Canada (PHE Canada), Sport Leadership sportif, and BC Recreation and Parks Association (BCRPA) conferences

THE WEST COAST FISHING CLUB FISHING FOR KIDS TOURNAMENT

CANUCKS AUTISM NETWORK REVEAL GALA

Over $1 million was raised for Canucks Autism Network at the 13th annual Fishing For Kids Tournament at The West Coast Fishing Club in scenic Haida Gwaii.

For a third time, the one-of-a-kind Reveal Gala returned to Rogers Arena, transporting guests to the bustling seaside resort of Saint-Tropez.

This year’s remarkable milestone was achieved by a group of just 40 anglers, consisting of business and community leaders across Canada. Special guests included Vancouver Canucks players Jake Virtanen and Sven Baertschi, Canucks head coach Travis Green, Canucks alumni Kirk McLean, and CAN Founder Paolo Aquilini. Tournament winner and Canucks Assistant Coach Nolan Baumgartner, reeled in a 30 lb Chinook during the catch and release event and donated the whole of his $200,000 winnings back to CAN.

Award-winning broadcasters Tamara Taggart and Mike Killeen took the lead as emcees with Lola Lennox, daughter of music royalty Annie Lennox, topping the musical performances.

Guests were treated to decadent fare, an incredible showcase of auction items, and a surprise address from child actor Jacob Tremblay. Funds raised reached an all-time high as Paolo Aquilini announced the $1.123 million total alongside his son Christian, the inspiration behind Canucks Autism Network.

HM COMMERCIAL RIDE FOR AUTISM KELOWNA, BC

ROCKETS ALUMNI FOUNDATION GOLF TOURNAMENT KELOWNA, BC

Headed by Marshall McAnerney, the 2018 HM Commercial Ride for Autism, invited riders of all levels and ages to partake in a day-long cycling and fundraising event.

Over 100 golfers took part in the 17th Annual Rockets Alumni Foundation Golf Tournament, in support of CAN programs in Kelowna.

On September 16th, over 80 cyclists assembled for the 4th Annual HM Commercial Ride for Autism, in support of CAN programs in Kelowna. Teams of two to three navigated a map of South East Kelowna while stopping at orchards and wineries to complete fun challenges and enjoy tastings. The ride was followed by a dinner paired with live music at the scenic Summer Hill Pyramid Winery in South Kelowna.

Participants had the exclusive opportunity to golf and dine alongside dozens of Kelowna Rockets alumni, including former WHL players and current NHL stars Shea Weber, Josh Gorges and Luke Schenn, among others.

Since 2004, the Rockets Alumni Foundation has been raising funds for CAN programs in Kelowna through various events, including the annual golf tournament.

MESSAGE FROM THE TREASURER Fiscal 2018 was a year of growth and transition for CAN. We successfully increased our revenue by about 12%, with a continued focus on diversification. Our management team worked hard to introduce new revenue streams through major gifts and fundraising initiatives, as well as monetizing certain existing activities such as CAN’s new training workshops, where we delivered 116 training sessions across the province. These efforts resulted in a decreased dependence on the Canucks for Kids Fund, from 40% of our total revenue in fiscal 2015 to 21% in fiscal 2018, thus reducing the overall operational risk of CAN. Revenue growth and diversification continues to be a key strategic objective.

Primarily due to program expansion, expenses increased by approximately 18% during fiscal 2018.

Our investment in programs resulted in over 500 program spaces being offered for the first time in CAN’s history, and we delivered these programs in 26 locations, compared to 23 locations in the previous year. We also saw strong growth in our membership base, which was up 20% in 2018 to approximately 4,800 members.

Operationally, we are navigating change as key leadership positions transition and we settle into our new premises on West 8th Ave. We are proud of our new space and believe it will support our growing operations and enhance operational effectiveness into the future. Overall, the expansion and change experienced during the 2018 fiscal year strained our financial resources, but also provided an opportunity to readjust and plan for future success.

Our major financial objective for fiscal 2019 is to return to a breakeven position on our expanded operations, to maintain a stable level of quality programming, and to continue to hold our administrative expenses at 10% or less of our total operating costs.
