“Usually stories start at the beginning, a round circle that brings you to an ending that fits, and makes sense. Unfortunately, our family’s story doesn’t work that way. The beginning quickly became an end faster than made any logical sense to us, or to our doctors. There was no rule book to the birth of my first, my entrance to motherhood. So, I think by starting at the end, you might get a better picture for how it all came to be, the love and loss of our child, and how a beautiful big house came to save us. The joys we were given in our few short hours at Canuck Place were simple; A soft bed, large windows with a small breeze. A warm cup of coffee in mismatched, handed-down mugs. A side table that could have been from my own home. Stairs that creaked with the weight of our bodies. Blankets that were soft and washed with care. A guitar. Sunlight. These small and simple details don’t seem like much in a busy day, but for me and my husband, holding our son in his final hours, these joys are my best kept memories.” Gift of Time 2020 Family Speaker, Katie Jameson

Dear Friends and Guests, Thank you for joining us virtually for the 16th Annual Gift of Time Gala presented by Nicola Wealth. We are honoured to have your support as we celebrate 25 years of timeless love at Canuck Place Children’s Hospice. 2020 has been a challenging year for all of us, and we are incredibly grateful for the caring community of generous supporters, sponsors, and volunteers who made this event possible. Thank you to our presenting partner, Nicola Wealth, we are grateful for your extraordinary commitment to this event and Canuck Place children and families. Thank you to our Gift of Time Gala Co-Chairs, Emily Lazare and Jill Donaldson and the exceptional volunteer Gift of Time Committee who, once again, contributed their creativity and passion to make this new experience one that is both memorable and impactful. We acknowledge and appreciate your determination and resilience. We would like to thank Canuck Place mom Katie for sharing the story of her son Lochlan, who passed away at Canuck Place. A Privilege to Present the

Gift of Time

Today, we face a significant challenge to worldwide health and economic stability. While this has given us all renewed appreciation of our health and relationships, we must be reminded that Canuck Place families continue to face a unique and deeply powerful challenge every day. Since the beginning of this year, Canuck Place has provided care for 701 children and families in their hospices and assisted countless families with in-home and in-hospital care. At the same time, they have experienced a 25% increase in new patients and family referrals to the Canuck Place Program. While many things have slowed as a result of the pandemic, unfortunately, the need for specialized pediatric care persists. Typically, the Gift of Time raises approximately 10% of the Canuck Place annual budget, a very difficult goal to achieve this year without your help. Now is when your support can make the most significant impact for hundreds of Canuck Place children and their families. We encourage you to generously donate the amount you would have spent to attend the live gala and register to participate in this year’s virtual event and auction. We at Nicola Wealth are honoured to be the presenting sponsor of this year’s Gift of Time, and know that with your support, Canuck Place, their leadership, and their staff, will meet each family, every day, with compassion, resilience, courage, and integrity. On behalf of everyone at Nicola Wealth, thank you for joining us and we hope you enjoy a wonderful evening. Sincerely,

John Nicola Chief Executive Officer Nicola Wealth

“We come back to Canuck Place each year on Lochlan’s birthday, which might actually seem strange, because he wasn’t born there, he died there three weeks later. But the way we remember this house is with a re-birth, a second chance at saying goodbye, one where we saw his hair touch sunlight and move in the breeze.” Gift of Time 2020 Family Speaker, Katie Jameson

FUND-ANEED 1 Your gift this evening will support the greatest needs at Canuck Place, so we can continue to provide critical care to vulnerable children and families across the province. Tonight you support:

Pandemic Response $25,000

Children at Canuck Place face diseases and conditions that don’t stop or ease in a pandemic. Pediatric patients at Canuck Place are medically vulnerable, and their parents are acutely aware of the challenges and complications presented by COVID-19. Our strategic response to provide vital services during these uncertain relies on our Nancy Chan Enhanced Community Care program which provides in-home care, virtual care through telephone and video conferencing, as well as a 24-hour nursing line.

Rest & Renewal $10,000

When a child is diagnosed with a life-threatening illness, parents and caregivers are faced with intensified 24-hour responsibility. Quality of life is threatened by very real tensions including financial pressures, relationship challenges, as well as physical and mental health challenges like fatigue and distress. Our Medical Respite program allows children the opportunity to receive clinical care for complex illnesses, pain and symptom management, recreation therapy and counselling, while their families receive much-needed rest, renewal and support.

Comfort in Grief $5,000

Ever-changing emotional, spiritual and psychosocial needs are overwhelming and can seem insurmountable for children and families facing end-of-life. Our counselling team builds on innate strengths in order to help families adjust to each stage of grief. We offer our hands and hearts to the families we serve; helping them find hope in the midst of despair, and letting them know they are not alone.

Medication & Supplies $1,000

No parent wants their child to suffer — ever. Clinicians at Canuck Place currently manage more than 190 different conditions, each presenting with their own complex and diverse medical needs. Our team administers over 150 medications requiring specialized medical equipment and specific supplies, ensuring children on program receive the medication they require when they need it the most, and at no cost to the families who love them.

A Million Moments $500

Through cherished memories, shared experiences and sacred mementos, our Recreation Therapy program empowers children and families to build precious memories together, and celebrate life. Our goal is to help children celebrate the everyday experience of being a child, providing opportunities for connection, excitement and fun! We host a variety of activities on and off-site throughout the year, including daily recreational options in our fully accessible play areas and play therapy rooms. For families who have reached end-of-life, this team facilitates the making of keepsake items including jewellery such as fingerprint necklaces, hand or foot molds, hair locks, or professional photographs.
