DENNY SAUNIER TO RETIRE

The Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce has announced that President & CEO Denny Saunier has informed the board that he plans to retire no later than the end of 2023, after a remarkable 42year career with the Chamber. Saunier has held the position of president & CEO since January 2001.

“Denny’s leadership, advocacy and tireless commitment to serving our community and businesses will truly be missed,” Canton Regional Chamber Board Chair Ralph Lee said. “He has guided our Chamber to solid organizational and financial footing, with an exceptionally strong staff and membership base. His successor will be well positioned to build on this strong foundation.”

The Canton Regional Chamber’s Board of Directors has formed a search committee to fill the position of President & CEO. Saunier will continue his role through the end of 2023 or until his successor is named. He is in the final year of a multi-year contract which coincides with the conclusion of the Chamber’s current strategic plan.

“Throughout my time at the Chamber, I have had the honor and privilege to serve in three major capacities and manage dozens of outstanding individuals, many of whom have gone on to become leaders in the community in their own capacity,” said Saunier. “The Chamber has not only been blessed with great staff over the years, but tremendous volunteers and diverse business leaders who have served on the Chamber’s Board of Directors and as Chairpersons of the organization, moving the Chamber toward incredible growth, making it one of Ohio’s eight largest metropolitan Chambers of Commerce.”

Saunier began his career at the Chamber by serving as the first president of the Canton/ Stark County Convention and Visitors’ Bureau, now Visit Canton. Throughout fourteen years in this position, he instituted marketing efforts for sports tourism, meetings and leisure travel, branded the region as “Ohio’s Golf Capital,” and attracted OHSAA Football State Championships to Canton. The benefits of these efforts and more are still felt today.

DENNY’S RETIREMENT, CONTINUED ...

During his tenure as the Chamber’s executive director of the Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Festival from 19942000, Saunier strengthened a partnership with the Pro Football Hall of Fame, growing interest in and the popularity of the now two-week Enshrinement Festival events, which engage more than 2,000 volunteers and contribute more than $40 million to Stark County’s economy.

“Denny Saunier adopted Canton and Stark County as his home and devoted himself for the past 42 years to making them better. His love for this community is well documented,” said Jim Porter, President and CEO of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. “His vision has helped bring a new vibrancy to downtown Canton. Under his leadership, the Hall of Fame Enshrinement Festival has grown tremendously and gained national acclaim. For all of these reasons and many more, this community owes a debt of gratitude to Denny.”

Under Saunier’s leadership, the Chamber:

• Instituted a health insurance program for small business, now covering more than 7,000 individuals;

• Established the young professional movement now known as ystark!;

• Led the effort to combine the JacksonBelden Chamber of Commerce with the Canton Regional Chamber;

• Expanded workforce development resources, attracting MAGNET, the Stark County Manufacturing Workforce Development Partnership, Stark County Minority Business Association, and the National Center for Urban Solutions to augment the Chamber’s existing workforce development efforts;

• Identified the potential to market the broader Akron-Canton region as a “Metroplex,” elevating talent and business attraction efforts, contributing, most notably, to landing Breeze Airways at the Akron-Canton Airport; and

• Navigated challenges and opportunities presented by the covid-19 pandemic to remain a critical source of information and support for local businesses.

“My personal thanks and thanks on behalf of the City of Canton to Denny Saunier for his leadership during his more than 40-year career with the Chamber. Denny has consistently supported the economic development of Canton and Stark County,” said Thomas M. Bernabei, Mayor for the City of Canton. “He played a key leadership role in the design, funding and construction of Centennial Plaza and has been a leading supporter for the Hall of Fame Village. He helped construct the Mills Industrial Park along with the DeHoff Family Foundation; advocated for the renovation of the DoubleTree Hotel by Hilton; and originated and administered the creation of the Downtown Special Improvement District, Visit Canton and Downtown Canton Land Bank. Under his leadership, the Chamber has been a great partner to Canton, and we will miss him.”

Saunier’s commitment to economic and community development has included an emphasis on diversity and inclusion. Determined to incorporate diversity in race, age and thought, Saunier ensured that the Chamber’s programming and strategic plan reflected this intention. In addition to establishing a young professional movement (ystark!) and

appointing diverse business professionals to the Chamber’s leadership team, in 2019 Saunier identified an opportunity to co-locate the Stark County Minority Business Association in the Chamber’s office building, an effort that has now been recognized by the State of Ohio as a model for promoting diversity and inclusion in business.

“Denny approached me in early 2019 and explained that the Canton Regional Chamber had written goals for diversity and inclusion. He laid out his vision for a potential partnership between our organizations,” said Leonard Stevens, CEO of the Stark County Minority Business Association (SCMBA). “As we embark on our third year in this agreement, I am grateful to Denny not only for his commitment to diversity and inclusion but also his commitment to SCMBA and helping us to meet the needs of minority businesses across Stark County.”

As a past President of the Rotary Club of Canton, Saunier was recognized as a Paul Harris Fellow. He received an Award of Excellence from the Ohio Association of Convention & Visitor Bureaus in 1998. Saunier was named one of About

Calling All Middle School Students

The national civics bee, through the US Chamber Foundation, is an annual competition that encourages young Americans to engage in civics and contribute to their communities through their creative problem-solving ideas. The Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce is one of four chambers that is piloting the project in Ohio. Any Stark County 6th, 7th and 8th grade student or any student served by the Stark County Educational Resource Center is invited and encouraged to participate.

In the first round of the contest, local middle school students participate through an essay submittal. Students are asked to identify a problem facing their community and explain how a citizen or citizen group could solve the problem.

The 500-word maximum essay will be evaluated on the following:

• Demonstration of an understanding of civics

• Acknowledge and address opposing views

• Acknowledge and address at least one Founding Principle and one Civic Virtue

• Use of primary sources like newspapers, data, historical documents, images, or other documents that relate to the idea

• Clearly describe a new or innovative idea

Judges will select 20 finalists to participate in the local live competition which will test civics knowledge. There will be two rounds of interactive questions using tablets. The top three from the elimination rounds will have 3 minutes to pitch their ideas to the judges and answer questions based on their essays. All top 20 students who participate in the live event will receive a certificate.

The local Stark County awards are:

• First Place $500

• Second Place $250

• Third Place $100

The top three students from each local competition will then advance to the state competition in Columbus.

Prizes for the State Competition are:

• State First Place $1,000

• State Second Place $750

• State Third Place $500

The 500 maximum word essay submittal can be uploaded https://bit.ly/cantonbee or mailed to the Barb Bennett at the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce 222 Market Ave N, Canton, OH 44702.

Essays will be accepted until February 24 at midnight. The top 20 local live competition will be held at Walsh University on Saturday, April 29 from 3:00-5:00. Notification of top 20 students will be March 13.

This is a great after school, in school or independent activity for our young citizens! Good luck to all!

OFFER HEALTH INSURANCE TO RETAIN TALENT

In the competitive landscape of today, employers must get creative with the benefits they offer. From flexible work schedules, to increased development opportunities, there is one benefit that still rules them all: health insurance.

Are you a small business owner on the fence about offering health insurance for your employees? The Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce has partnered with AultCare to offer a health care plan for the small business community through a Multiple Employer Welfare Arrangement (MEWA).

The MEWA was developed to provide additional options and to help control the costs of health care benefits. Medically underwritten MEWA rates may provide a less expensive option than a smaller community rated plan obtained under the Affordable Care Act (ACA). This plan is available for small group employers with less than 50 employees.

According to a survey by Glassdoor, employees said health insurance is, by far, the most important benefit they receive from their employer. That’s why employers should offer health insurance to employees as their first company benefit, then add on additional benefits over time.

The top three benefits that make employees the most satisfied, according to Glassdoor’s study, are: Health insurance, Vacation and PTO and Pension plans, 401(k) & other retirement plans

If health benefits are a top priority for your employees, it should be a top priority for you. Offering it can help with recruiting and entice them to stay longer at your company.

For Chamber Membership information call 330-456-7253. For health care or health fund information, contact your independent broker or AultCare at 330-363-6390. All AultCare health plan quote proposals include commission, unless otherwise specified.

The answer to that question posed in the headline is: It depends.

On what? On whether you want to start - or already own - a small business or non-profit and need help from seasoned experts, or whether you are a person with business or non-profit experience and expertise that you would like to share with SCORE clients.

If you are a potential SCORE client, what’s in it for you is working with SCORE mentors who will help you plan strategically. Too many SCORE clients - make that way too many - want to begin discussions by describing tactics such as their new brochure or website or their business Facebook page or an ad, etc. A SCORE mentor - or a team as SCORE members often counsel together - will help you focus on proceeding strategically. Such a mentor will help you define and articulate your aspirations, opportunities, challenges, financial situation, objectives, audiences and their expectations and messages - and only after completing that up-front work will turn to tactics. Put succinctly, you learn to focus more comprehensively and sharply on your initiative.

You can also expect to think kindly of SCORE’s fees; there are none. Yes, and in addition to providing cost-free counseling, you are assured that your discussions with

WHAT’S IN IT FOR YOU?

SCORE mentors will remain confidential. All in all, a SCORE client can expect to receive a significant return on an investment in time and planning.

Now, what if you are the kind of person who likes to give back - to what we term “the community at large” that has been instrumental to your career success - by helping others succeed? You need only contact SCORE to initiate the process that results in becoming a member of the SCORE team. The Canton Regional SCORE Chapter team numbers some 50 volunteers.

What do they receive for their investment in helping others?

• They get to remain involved in the business or non-profit world without becoming immersed in it as perhaps they were during their careers.

• They get to see SCORE clients’ eyes shine more brightly as they see more clearly the pathway to success.

• They get to experience that satisfying sense of giving back to “the community at large.”

• They get to engage in continuous learning from their clients. There are occasions when a SCORE member

knows little about a client’s particular business or non-profit field. But the SCORE member can listen and learn to such a client and then apply lessons learned on leadership and management.

• They get to enjoy the camaraderie that enriches membership in an organization of volunteers who take joy in helping strengthen an area’s small business and non-profit community.

SCORE - What’s in it for you? You can learn still more by contacting SCORE at cantonscore@gmail.com or by phoning 330-4516509 or by visiting the chapter’s website www.score.org/canton

The chapter serves businesses and non-profits - both start-ups and existing businesses and non-profit organizations - throughout Stark, Tuscarawas, Holmes, Harrison, Carroll, and Wayne counties.

Supporting SCORE are entities - foundations, chambers of commerce, banks, accounting firms, economic development organizations, law firms - that believe in SCORE’s mission.
