CHAIRMAN’S REPORT won’t need to worry about finding a parking space as we now have more than enough capacity for even the busiest of nights. In The Bistro the new al fresco area is open, providing a beautiful space to enjoy a world class meal under a magical Sydney summer sky. In just a couple of weeks we look forward to opening the new Atrium Bar. Overlooking the spectacular indoor rainforest, the new Atrium Bar is a sophisticated adult only boutique bar and lounge, perfect for an intimate night out or a catch up with friends over a drink or two on the weekend. Along with the significant changes front of house, the past couple of months have seen a number of changes back of house. At the end of August we farewelled CEO Dave Brace. Dave joined Canterbury in 2013 and has overseen a period of significant change for the Club. The recruitment process for a new CEO is presently underway. Dear Members, I am pleased to report that in the past month the majority of our renovation has been completed. On the front cover of this magazine we have showcased the spectacular new light show that now welcomes members and guests to Canterbury every night. Along with the dramatic new façade, the Club’s iconic volcano water feature is also back up and running after receiving a significant makeover and it is looking better than ever. The new 450 space underground car park at the front of the Club is now open, with all the new spaces providing comfortable, safe and direct access into the Club. The car park is spacious and bright with background music, stunning air-conditioned lift foyers, and you emerge from the car park in a glass lift that is a feature in itself. You

I wish Dave, Dr. George, George and Morris all the best for their future endeavours. On behalf of the Board, Management and Staff at Canterbury, I wish you and your family a Merry Christmas and a happy and prosperous New Year.

DONATION HELPS TO CUT HOSPITAL STAYS Discharge times for female patients in Canterbury Hospital’s Obstetrics and Gyneacology Ward are being reduced with the introduction of the Hystero Resection Kit. The Hystero Resection kit has been purchased with an $11,000 donation from Canterbury League Club. The kit, although tiny in size contains life changing surgical instruments that allows for safer and more precise removal of fibroid and endometrial polyps. “The Hospital is very grateful for this generous gift to the people of the area

that Canterbury Hospital services. Not only does this kit save time and money, but more importantly is a much safer way to operate on women in our area,” said Dr Louis Izzo, Associate Professor and Head of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Cantebrury Hospital.

community. Being able to cut hospital stay times will provide patients with a better hospital experience and our surgeons will be able to operate with more precision,” said George Coorey, Chairman of Canterbury League Club.

Prior to the equipment being purchased, a patient had a procedure and stayed in hospital overnight. Now when the surgery is performed, the patient can be discharged the same day.

HORIZON THEATRE – LET’S QUIT THIS BULL Canterbury League Club has donated $16,400 to Horizon Theatre in Wiley Park which will go towards their new project ‘Let’s Quit This Bull’. ‘Let’s Quit This Bull’ is an intervention workshop that uses drama, dance and music to let participants discuss and express their emotions about bullying. The project is aimed at 15- 24-year-olds from diverse backgrounds who are living in the Canterbury area. Each workshop allows the participants to work as a team and create performances while taking turns to be both victim and abuser.

The performances are recorded and uploaded on Horizon Theatre’s website for future reference. The workshops conclude with the participants being asked what the bully is trying to achieve and how the situations can be resolved. “I would like to thank Canterbury League Club for providing the opportunity to create projects like this. Bullying has always been a problem and anything we can do to ameliorate its consequences is particularly urgent,” said Maddy Slabacu, Artistic Director of Horizon Theatre. The workshop is being delivered to

over 150 young participants across the Canterbury area. “This is a really terrific project that deals with a challenging societal issue in a unique and engaging way” said George Coorey Chairman of Canterbury League Club. “We have all seen the impact of bullying and how it can impact negatively on people’s lives. The workshops are a great way to let young people express themselves and at the same time learn new skills to deal with bullying.” For more information about Horizon Theatre visit horizontheatre.org.au

Horizon Theatre at Wiley Park offers workshops and programs to help people of all ages express themselves creatively.

DEVELOPMENT

The glass lift carriage leading into the new carpark

DEVELOPMENT UPDATE Canterbury League Club’s largest redevelopment and construction project is nearing completion. As patrons enter the Club from Bridge Road, the new 5-level car park is now open and provides more than 400 premium spots. At the entrance of the carpark is a digital sign board that indicates how many car spots are available. During peak periods, patrons will enjoy the convenience of ample parking and knowing where it is located. Outside the Club, the lawn area and volcano area have been restored. The volcano has been renovated with new landscaping, lighting and electronics.

The Atrium Bar is set to open in November

Adjacent to the volcano is the glass enclosed lift that provides you with the impression that you are travelling through the volcano and into the Club. A tree sculpture has been put in each lift lobby area that gives the impression that it is growing through the levels. As night time hits, an LED light show is visible on the western façade. During the holiday season, make sure to keep your eyes out as Santa may be making an appearance! Inside the Club, the full internal fit out of the Bistro and the alfresco dining area has now been complete. The area is spacious and provides something for everyone making it perfect for family dining.

Prior to expansion, The Bistro was able to seat 390 diners, but has now been transformed to fit in excess of 650, making it one of the largest restaurants in Sydney. Construction of the Atrium Bar on level 1 is progressing well and is set to open in November. You can keep up to date with all the latest development news by visiting our website and following our social media pages. Regular updates will also be available in every magazine. MEET OUR PERSONAL TRAINER: DANIEL Meet our trainer Daniel, who has been with the C-Life family for over 4 years. He has been part of the reception and training crews. What’s your number one reason for getting into fitness and health? There are many reasons why I started in fitness and health, but the main reason would have to be to enhance sport specific performance. What makes you stand out from other personal trainers in the industry? Over several years, I have completed 3 degrees. Also, I have worked in the industry for many years. This has allowed me to have theoretical and practical balance. What is your favourite machine in the Health Club? Without a doubt, the squat rack – you can do just about anything in there! What do you love most about working at C-Life? You’ve probably heard this one before, but it is no less true each time it’s said; C-Life boasts a friendly and

family orientated environment. I feel right at home each time I walk in the door. What is your favourite group exercise class and why? HIIT Class – because high intensity interval training has been proven by independent evidence-based research to increase aerobic and anaerobic fitness. The movements require every muscle working together in short intervals giving you max effort. Resistance or cardio, which do you prefer? The combination of resistance and cardiovascular training. Research shows that a concurrent approach to training to be very effective. It also means that your time spent in the gym is efficient! Favourite Quote Failure is success in progress. Daniel can be seen around the Club and will always stop to greet you with a friendly smile!

CHRISTOPHER SOUSOU; THE RISING TENNIS STAR OF MOXON SPORTS CLUB Since the age of 3 ½ , Christopher Sousou has been playing tennis. Now 12 years old, Christopher trains at Moxon Sports Club 6 days a week with 2.5-hour long sessions under the guidance of Kellert Tennis Academy. Earlier this year, Christopher was ranked 1535 in Australia. Currently Christopher’s ranking is 850 which includes other Australian Tennis superstars like Nick Kyrgios. His next goal is to be ranked in the mid 400’s by 2019. “I love playing on the tennis courts at Moxon Sports Club, especially on the different types of surfaces. I really love playing on the new hardcourt. Most importantly, I love working with my coaches John Kellert and Richard Kellert. They push me really hard but still make it fun. It’s crazy how much I have improved since coming here,” said Christopher Sousou.

Recently, Christopher participated in the Claycourt National Championships in Canberra. “I was very excited but nervous at the same time. So, I played an average first match which I lost but then I won all my other matches after that which made me feel better. It was good experience for me. I want to win it all next year!” Some of Christopher’s highlights in 2018 included winning the Nepean Spring Open 12’s single event, making the main draw of Nationals without having to qualify which meant that Christopher was ranked 19 in the Country and he won the 12’s single and Doubles at the ACT Tournament which was held in July 2018. With dreams to win the Australian Open and play for Australia in the Davis Cup, Christopher is a rising star with a bright future ahead of him.

BOWLING THEIR WAY ACROSS THE STATE From Gosford to Bomaderry, The Canterbury League Social Bowling Club have taken trips to visit bowling clubs across NSW to compete in a friendly bowling tournament. Once a month, the keen bowlers dressed in their blue and white team colours meet to play a friendly game of bowls. Recently, the Social Bowling Club played host to a friendly match against Bomaderry Bowling Club at their new home venue, Moxon Sports Club. “Anyone can join the Social Bowling Club, the only condition is that they must be a member of Canterbury League Club and

a bowling member of any bowling club,” said James Fowler, President of the Social Bowling Club. “When I was 65 years old, I thought I wasn’t old enough to play bowls, so it wasn’t until I was 70 years old that I started. I love playing with the group and I enjoy the company, I wish I had started earlier. There is only one strict rule and that is everyone has to be happy and to have fun.” The winner of the day is not chosen based on skill but on passion and how much fun they are having. Dudley Jennings, Secretary of the Social

Bowling Club is the only person who knows the winner on the day. “We loved coming to Moxon Sports Club, the hospitality that they have shown us has been remarkable. I recommend lawn bowls for anyone regardless of age because of the fun you will have,” said Charlie Francis from Bomaderry Bowling Club. The day includes a game of lawn bowls, morning tea, lunch, a raffle and lots of laughter. For more information or to sign up please contact Dudley Jennings on 0498821694 or travellingbowlers@outlook.com
