CEO’S REPORT On 21 March I presented our trading results for the Financial Year ended 31 October 2017 to the Annual General Meeting. I am pleased to report that we posted a profit of $6.38million, which was an excellent result considering the extensive building works that took place during the financial year, as well as the period during which our main restaurant was closed. During the year we also contributed more than $4.66 million in grants to sporting groups and the community. At the start of April, we opened the new permanent driveway into the Club. This new entrance will allow you to enter directly into the new underground car park when it opens in a few months’ time or drive straight through to the existing rear car park. The new driveway also includes two exit lanes for vehicles to exit either left or right on Bridge Rd, which should speed up your exit from the Club on busy nights. Work on the new car park is continuing to progress well and the new lift that will bring you to the front of the Club is well underway and you can see now how convenient this new car park will be. The new balcony for the level 1 extension and al fresco area for The Bistro underneath has been built, with the striking V shaped columns now visible across the front of the Club. Work is well underway on the final fitout for these new areas.

Happy Mother’s Day to all our Mums, In March we opened the new Moxon Sports Club. This terrific Club is located on Moxon Road in Punchbowl and I encourage everyone to drop in and check out the freshly renovated premises and enjoy a meal in the brand new restaurant, Bistro on Moxon. For the lawn bowlers, the greenkeepers have gotten the greens into excellent shape and any prospective new members should get in touch with the Bowls Coordinator to set up a time to check out the facilities. Moxon Sports Club also boasts six tennis courts, two of which have recently been renovated, and can be hired through the Club. Or, if you would like a lesson, the Kellert Tennis Academy is located on site and caters for all ages and levels of experience.

At the Board Meeting in March the results of the election of Canterbury’s directors for the next two years were announced, the details of which are listed below. At the new Board’s first Meeting, George Coorey was elected President and Peter Callaghan elected Vice President. Congratulations to George, Peter and all the new and returning directors and I look forward to working with you as we continue to build and grow this great Club. On behalf of the Club I would also like to thank our outgoing Directors – Arthur Coorey, Ray Dib, Peter McMahon and Barry Ward for their many years of service to Canterbury. I look forward to seeing you around the Club.

DEVELOPMENT

New driveway into Canterbury’s rear car park looking into the new Western front extension

NEW PERMANENT DRIVEWAY NOW OPEN Canterbury’s redevelopment is another step closer to completion with the opening of the new permanent driveway in April. The new driveway links up to the existing rear car park and is the final permanent entry – the temporary driveway has been closed for demolition and will eventually become the entrance to the underground loading dock. One of the features of the new driveway is its two exit lanes, one to head left towards Lakemba and one to head right towards Belmore, which will make it easier to exit the Club.

There are two different companies on site currently working on the extension – Parkview is completing the fitout for The Bistro’s outdoor al fresco area while MPA are working above them to complete the outdoor balcony area.

You can keep up-to-date with all the latest development news by following our website, Facebook and Twitter pages. Regular updates will also be available in every magazine. CanterburyLeaguesClub @Canterbury_LC

The new underground car park at the front of Canterbury is almost complete – workers are currently installing the lifts and ventilation. At the same time, work is also being done to wire up speakers, CCTV cameras, and paint the car park line markings, signage and level numbers. On the Western front of the Club, the hoarding has come down to reveal the skeleton formwork of the new extension.

AIR MATTRESS HELPING PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES SLEEP BETTER A joint partnership between Canterbury League Club and The Lantern Club to donate $8318 to The Northcott Society’s respite house in Roselands has seen many of their clients sleeping better at night. The donation was used to purchase four special Airlo5 air-pressurised mattresses which help move clients while they sleep at night to prevent bed pressure sores.

the overall costs for families as they no longer need to pay for an awake shift night worker to move their child while they sleep as the mattresses will do the work instead.” The mattress is made out of multiple air pocket cells which are inflated alternatively by a quiet air pump. There is also a quick release valve on the side which can be activated in the event of emergency resuscitation.

“It is tough going for many parents with children with disabilities to be able to support them not just emotionally and mentally, but also financially. Aside from the positive physical benefits, these mattresses are also helping a lot of families save money which can go towards other costs of caring for their child,” said George Coorey, Chairman of Canterbury League Club.

“Our Roselands respite accommodation centre service provides an important opportunity for children with disabilities to develop independent living skills and for their parents/carers to have a break from the demands of caring for a child with high needs,” said Beth Heng, Roseland Centre Coordinator. “By having these mattresses available for families who use our respite services it allows them to feel more at ease knowing their child is comfortable and their positioning is correct. It also lowers

SHINING THE LIGHT ON OUR SES VOLUNTEERS The lights at the local NSW State Emergency Service (SES) Canterbury Unit are shining brighter after a $7,451 grant from Canterbury to help purchase three new portable lights, GPS navigation units and some furniture. “The portable lights come with power packs and are designed to be deployed quickly and effciently to provide scene lighting at an emergency site. Our unit members are often responding to weather 24 hours/7 days a week. These lightweight units can provide lighting at an emergency site in under one minute, and can provide consistent lighting for up to 12 hours on a single battery charge,” said Brad Collins, Floor Rescue Officer for Canterbury NSW SES. The Canterbury SES unit, which operates out of Beverly Hills, is made up of approximately 50 volunteers who receive intensive training to prepare them for any emergency situation throughout the year.

6

“In the last 12 months, Canterbury unit has assisted the local community with 203 requests for assistance. Most of our calls usually involve property damage and tree jobs after a storm has passed through the area. Our unit is pretty heavily involved in the flood rescue space as well, responding to over 200 flood rescues in the past five years,” said Brad.

“The SES does an amazing job responding to emergency situations especially with the occasional wild weather that has struck our area in the past few years. Being able to respond to distress calls quickly and efficiently can make a world of difference to people’s lives – Canterbury is proud to sponsor their efforts,” said George Coorey, Chairman of Canterbury League Club.

MEMBER & FITMUM OF THE MONTH: KELLY WILLIAMS

BEFORE

Congratulations to our Member of the Month, Kelly Williams! This yummy mummy is most deserving of our monthly accolade which recognises the achievements of our members. Kelly’s been with us for just over two years now and hasn’t looked back since. She recalls falling off the bandwagon after the birth of her second son, which saw her creep up to the 100kg mark. A few weeks after, she decided enough was enough; something had to give. There have been several influential individuals, who have significantly contributed to Kelly’s journey. Namely, in-house trainers Marisa and Noor, who have continually given Kelly their support within the realms of her training and nutrition. As well as her best friend of 20 years, fellow C-Life member Lisa Cheers. Lisa and Kelly have been at C-Life together since day one and Lisa, also a mother of two, has continued to be a source of inspiration for Kelly (as well as being her swolemate!). Talk about a dynamic duo. For Kelly, C-Life is her second home. She tells us how each time she walks in, she feels welcomed by everyone and feels like she can utilise any area of the gym, completely judgement free. In fact, she finds herself continually being supported by those around her. Congratulations once again Kelly!

THE LAKEMBA CLUB CELEBRATES 70 YEARS

Official ceremony for the laying of the foundation stone at Lakemba Memorial Hall (site of The Lakemba Club), 27 Apr 1929 (Photo: City of Canterbury Local History Photograph Collection)

EARLY HISTORY Seventy years ago on 10 June 1948, a small local club called the Lakemba Services Club became incorporated but the club’s complex beginnings go further back in history. Shortly after the conclusion of World War I, returned soldiers started raising funds to build a hall to commemorate their brethren who had served. A block of land where the current club stands was purchased for £300 under the names of three trustees; Dr John Barriskill, Victor Harcourt and Russell Gordon – however, being a public acquisition and a trust property, it was owned by the government. The men then formed ‘The Lakemba Sailors and Soldiers Memorial Hall

Committee’ which was tasked with organising various functions to raise funds to build the hall. By mid-1929, after years of fundraisers and hard work, the committee had borrowed and raised enough money to build a single-storey hall called the Lakemba Memorial Hall. The hall cost approximately £2800 by the time it was completed, a large sum of money back in those days. By renting out the premise for events and meetings, the committee had successfully paid back the original bank loan after several years. The committee continued to manage the hall until 1949.

How The Lakemba Club looked after the 1971 major renovation

The previous Lakemba logo

LAKEMBA SERVICES CLUB WAS FORMED A few years prior, there was movement by the Hall Committee to wind up and hand over the property to a soldier organisation. They couldn’t sell the hall as it was government property but they

could apply for a Bill of Parliament to transfer it to another organisation. This was one step closer to be realised when the Lakemba Returned Soldiers Club and the Lakemba sub-branch of the Australian Legion of ExServicemen & Women signed a mutual agreement on 20 April 1946 to form the Lakemba Services Club with the first Annual General Meeting held on 2 August 1946. The RSL Sub Branch was then invited to join Lakemba Services Club on 14 February 1947 and from then on, the three constituent bodies worked together to further the Club’s services. Lakemba Services Club officially incorporated on 10 June 1948. After much debate in Parliament, the original Lakemba Memorial Hall and

the land it stood on was transferred to the newly-incorporated Lakemba Services Club by an Act of Parliament on 12 April 1949. From then on the hall became the club’s meeting point and membership kept on growing until 1958 when development plans were submitted to extend the building. Construction continued for the next three years before completion in early December 1961. A second major renovation happened in mid-1971 and was completed a year later. The old memorial hall was raised from the ground floor to become the new first floor Auditorium and in keeping to the spirit of its historical roots, the club was renamed Lakemba Services Memorial Club on 28 July 1972.

BECOMING THE LAKEMBA CLUB In 2001, Lakemba Services Memorial Club amalgamated with Canterbury League Club and in late 2013, was reborn as The Lakemba Club after a $2.2 million, six-month renovation. The new makeover included adding a new central bar and café, a new restaurant space, new décor, updated furniture and modern audio visual equipment. The external brick façade of the club was also rendered and painted, and new signage was installed.

Today The Lakemba Club operates as a hub for the greater Lakemba community and is a fantastic place for families and friends to meet up and have a meal together. The Club is also a host to several events a year including ANZAC Day and Armistice Day to commemorate the people who have fought and served for their country. These events are arranged by the Lakemba RSL Sub-Branch which is still an active group operating till this day.

MOXON PIGEON CLUB WELCOMES NEW MEMBERS In an age before technology and mobile phones, messages would be sent by pigeon post by specially-trained homing pigeons and the tradition continues today in the slightly altered form of pigeon racing. “Pigeons are released from a certain race point during racing season and when they arrive at the pigeon racer’s home, they are timed in with a manual or

electronic clock which shows the time the pigeon arrived and the velocity which is calculated by the distance travelled,” said Allan Skuse, former President for the Punchbowl-Bankstown Homing Pigeon Society based in the new Moxon Sports Club.

Meet the Bistro on Moxon team, from L-R: Ahmed, Gary, Carolina and Sam

MEET THE BISTRO ON MOXON TEAM Owner Gary Di Paola is no stranger to the appetites of Canterbury-Bankstown residents after his successful ten-year run at La Piazza in Bankstown Sports Club. The intrepid restauranteur is also familiar with club dining after opening up a similarly popular restaurant at South Coogee Bowling Club. Gary is now embarking on a new adventure, running Bistro on Moxon inside Moxon Sports Club. “So many customers and ex-staff have visited me at South Coogee, all asking why I haven’t opened something closer to Bankstown. My reply was that there was

nothing in the area that interested me… until now,” said Gary. Bistro on Moxon serves up pub and club classics with an Italian leaning, a nod to Gary’s Italian heritage and favouritism for all things pizza and pastas. With a menu chock full of schnitzels, burgers, pizzas, pastas and share platters, there is something that will tempt even the most discerning foodie. “I’d describe the menu as ‘one for all’ and my diners can expect to eat great food at reasonable prices,” said Gary. An unsurprising statement considering the team Gary has behind him –

Executive Chef Ahmed Istanbouli and Head Chef Samuel Holleis – both veterans from his time running La Piazza. Rounding out the team is Bistro on Moxon’s Restaurant Manager, Carolina Duque. “Ahmed has worked for me at La Piazza for the past eight years and brings a world of experience. Samuel started with me as an apprentice, mentoring under Ahmed so he too is well-versed with how I run my kitchens. One thing I know for sure is that the food will be good!” Group bookings and functions are available. www.moxonsports.com.au www.facebook.com/moxonsports/ info@bistroonmoxon.com.au
