CEO’S REPORT The Bulldogs kick start their season on Saturday 10th March with a match in Perth against reigning premiers the Melbourne Storm. There is plenty of anticipation for the season ahead with new coach Dean Pay ready to unveil a new look game plan and the introduction of some new high profile recruits in international players Aaron Woods and Keiran Foran. As always we will have all Bulldogs games shown in the Club so if you can’t get to the game then come to Canterbury to watch the action with other Bulldogs supporters and enjoy a meal or one of our game day specials. On the development front the builders are well advanced on the construction of stage two of The Bistro with the large al fresco dining room at the front of the Club now taking shape. This outdoor area will have nearly 200 seats overlooking the gardens that are being re-established above the new car park. On the front of this new area will be large architectural blades which will be finished with the latest LED lighting. This lighting will be programmed to provide a dazzling light show across the front of the Club.

Happy Easter to all our Members and Guests. Since opening in December, The Bistro has been trading strongly with thousands of people dining in the new restaurant. Members have been overwhelmingly supportive of the new menu and have been enjoying the new service style. Dining at The Bistro is easy. Simply find your seat, browse the menu which is on every table and then approach the counter and place your order. The chef team will then freshly prepare your meal and a staff member will deliver it directly to your table when it’s ready. While you’re ordering don’t forget to check out the Daily Specials board which is located above the tills.

At the time of writing, progress on the new Moxon Sports Club at Punchbowl is on track to open shortly. This exciting new Club will provide all of the great service that you have come to expect from Canterbury, with a relaxed modern vibe. We will be hosting a gala day at the new Moxon Sports Club shortly after it opens to showcase all the terrific new facilities as well as special guest appearances by the Bulldogs. Make sure you follow our website and social media pages for all the details. I look forward to seeing you around the Club.

DEVELOPMENT

Workers are joining the existing building to the new extension

WORK PROGRESSING ON STAGE 2 OF THE BISTRO With the start of 2018, there is a renewed drive to complete the final stages of Canterbury’s massive redevelopment which is slated for completion later this year. A lot of the work is focused on the front of the Club as Parkview continue building the external extension which will house The Bistro’s new alfresco area. Currently they’ve partially joined the West side of the building to the new extension with more concrete flooring and roofing to be poured to complete the structure.

well. The walls enclosing the dock which separate it from the underground car park have now been completed and there is plenty of space for trucks to drive in and reverse into the purpose built loading area. Work inside the Club has taken a temporary hiatus as Parkview completes the external extension however expect it to kick off again in March when MPA workers return for the internal fitout of all remaining areas. Another exciting feature that they will start working on when they return is a new floating bar and lounge

area adjoining the grand staircase near the indoor atrium leading up to Level 1. Patrons sitting in the area will be able to enjoy views of the lush green indoor atrium and waterfall feature. You can keep up-to-date with all the latest development news by following our website, Facebook and Twitter pages. Regular updates will also be available in every magazine. CanterburyLeaguesClub @Canterbury_LC

Once the structure is completed, the external building will be clad in specially-made copper fins embedded with special LED lights that can be programmed to display different shapes, patterns and colours across the building facade. It was created by Melbourne lighting designer Bruce Ramus, whose works have graced Vivid Sydney, Wet N Wild Sydney, Federation Square and singer Guy Sebastian’s Australian tour. Underneath the extension, construction of the basement loading dock is progressing

The new basement loading dock will have enough space for four trucks to unload at a time

DISCOUNTED GROCERIES HELPING THOSE IN NEED Healthy food is usually one of the first items to be cut from the budgets of struggling families in the face of rising living costs – a Campsie organisation is helping to change that via an $11,840 donation from Canterbury League Club. The Staples Bag, an initiative of Settlement Services International (SSI), provides a weekly grocery bag containing a variety of fresh fruit and vegetables, meat, seafood, bread, pasta, eggs and milk at a subsidised price, usually 70 per cent off the supermarket price of goods. There are three different Staples Bags to choose from depending on the family size.

to feed over 130,000 individuals and families in NSW.

include functionality for community building and supplier recognition,” said Leanne.

Canterbury’s donation was used to redevelop SSI’s current website to make it easier for SSI’s clients to order online as well as to purchase a walkie stacker to help move pallets around their warehouse.

“Low income families are being squeezed on both ends by high Sydney rents as well as other living costs such as bills so it is wonderful that a service like this exists. Healthy and nutritious food does more than just fill the belly; it keeps the person physically healthy and mentally motivated which has a flow on effect to their productivity at work and minimises their burden to the healthcare system,” said Dr George Peponis OAM, Chairman of Canterbury League Club.

“The new website can be expected to launch within the next six months. This will be a great resource to better present and communicate who we are to a wider audience and also

“We currently help over 150 families and individuals every day to access essential low cost groceries including, but not limited to, low-income earners, pensioners, people with disability, migrants and refugees, singleparents, homeless individuals, vulnerable youth and other groups,” said Leanne Hung, Project Coordinator for SSI. Since it was launched in October 2015, more than 600 tonnes of food have been distributed

NEW YEAR, NEW STAFF COMMUNITY PROGRAM Now in its fifth year, the Canterbury staff community program has been growing from strength to strength and 2018 promises to be another great year. This year staff will be continuing their relationship with local Punchbowl group, Maronites on Mission, to help feed the homeless at Woolloomooloo and Martin Place on the last Thursday of every month. In a first for the program, staff will have an opportunity to attend a health expo specifically organised for them at the Club for their convenience. Various medical providers will be invited to the expo and staff will get the

6

chance to speak to a doctor, receive a free flu vaccination, have their blood pressure, cholesterol and blood glucose checked, and also access a dietician, nurse and massage therapist to discuss any health issues. Other staff activities include fundraising for Jeans for Genes Day, Jersey Day, and National Breast Cancer Foundation’s popular Breast Cancer Awareness Week. Last year ‘Canterbury Turning Pink’ raised $1208.60 through pink dessert sales at Bakehouse café and other staff fundraising activities, and all proceeds were donated to breast cancer research and prevention.

To cap off the year, staff will organise a Christmas Wishing Tree to be placed at the staff room and club reception. Members, guests and staff can donate a present to a youth in need and place it under the tree; all the presents will be donated to charity in time for Christmas. “Canterbury has always been a big supporter of the community and our staff program is just another avenue for staff to participate and give back,” said Dave Brace, CEO of Canterbury League Club.

View of the new bar which has been divided to make space for the restaurant servery pass

NEW CLUB COMING SOON At the last check in, builders had just started work to extend the front of the club with new retaining walls – that section is now complete and weathertight. Work inside the Club has also progressed very quickly and back-of-house services have been completely transformed – new bathrooms on either end of the bar have been tiled with beige and white tiles and the toilets and sinks have gone in; the shape of the new kitchen is visible and exhaust fans and the grease trap have

been installed; and the bar has been reconfigured and shortened to make way for the restaurant servery pass. The walls have been painted a light neutral colour to match the overall light white and grey palette, and it’s brought a lot of light into the Club. The ceilings will also be painted in the same colour scheme which will also help open up the space.

Club signpost has been removed together with the dead trees surrounding it. A new signpost with Moxon Sports Club will be installed shortly. Moxon Sports now has a new website and Facebook page so subscribe to keep up-to-date with all the latest development and What’s On news. www.moxonsports.com.au www.facebook.com/moxonsports/
