CEO’S REPORT The Bakehouse Cafe continues to trade exceptionally well and patrons have been enjoying the new menu that was introduced recently. If you haven’t visited for a while I encourage you to drop by and sample some of the exciting new dishes. Along with the regular menu there are also a range of specials which change regularly so you’re guaranteed to find something to tickle your tastebuds. Flame Pizza + Grill will be ranging a number of Americanthemed specials in July and August including a mouthwatering smoky beef brisket and a special cheeseburger pizza. Earlier this year we introduced a new streamlined birthday rewards program. You can earn special ‘Birthday Dollars’ to be spent at the Club’s food and beverage outlets. To earn your birthday dollars simply visit the Club during the month of your birthday and swipe your card at an Engage Rewards kiosk. Birthday dollars will be added automatically to your member card. Birthday dollar amounts start at $10 and increase depending upon your Engage Rewards level so make sure you visit the Club during the month of your birthday and enjoy our gift to you.

DEVELOPMENT

Galaxy Play Area has been demolished to make way for the new al fresco area

UNDERGROUND CAR PARK NEARING COMPLETION If you were to peer into the hole at the front of the Club, you’ll be surprised to see how close to the top construction has progressed to complete the multi storey underground car park. Parkview are currently working on forming the two new areas of basement level 1 – one side is the car park, the other side is the Club’s new loading dock. The new loading dock will have enough room to receive four trucks at any one time and will have ample space for the vehicles to reverse in so that they can load and unload stock efficiently. From that point, stock can be quickly dispersed to different sections of the Club through a series of underground tunnels that link one end of Canterbury to the other. The entire space and the surrounding areas that used to be Galaxy Play Area have also been demolished as part of the planned new bistro al fresco extension. The next step is to join the Club’s existing foundation slab to the new West wing build.

4

A new back-of-house kitchen and other members’ amenities, including a cashier and Supervisor’s room, on the first floor of the West wing are nearing completion. Also tucked away in that section in the nearby plant rooms are seven new industrial air conditioning units installed at a cost of nearly $1 million; all working together to keep that wing of the Club comfortable even during the hottest months. Joining them in the plant room are three new industrial heaters, and three large exhaust fans which pull air

from the kitchens at Banyan Brasserie and Dynasty. You can keep up-to-date with all the latest development news by following our website, Facebook and Twitter pages. Regular updates will also be available in every magazine. CanterburyLeaguesClub @Canterbury_LC

COMMUNITY

CANTERBURY CELEBRATES 60 YEARS Sixty years ago, on 6 June 1957, a small little club operating out of a repurposed wooden naval hut officially opened to a membership base of 292 members. Fast forward 60 years, Canterbury recently celebrated with a cake cutting ceremony with the Board of Directors and some special guests including Canterbury Life Members Harry Murray, Keith Lotty and Gary McIntyre, Tony Burke Federal Member for Watson, Linda Burney Federal Member for Barton and Sophie Cotsis State Member for Canterbury. Thank you to all who attended and Canterbury looks forward to another 60 more years and beyond.

NEW VAN HAS ALL THE BELLS AND WHISTLES TO FEED THE HOMELESS

Maronites on Mission unveiled their new Canterbury-sponsored food van

Canterbury League Club’s staff-led monthly food runs to feed the homeless in Martin Place and Woolloomooloo with Maronites on Mission (MoM) have been one of the longest and most successful staff community projects to date. On the last Thursday of every month, six Canterbury staff volunteer four hours of their time to go out in the MoM food van to help distribute over 150 hot meals, sandwiches, drinks, snacks and and fruit to two locations in the city. Aside from providing staff volunteers and meals for the homeless, Canterbury has followed up their commitment to MoM’s charitable works by providing $80,000 for the purchase of a second, larger hightech van. The new van has a generator to

keep food warm, a retractable awning to keep volunteers dry in wet weather, a built-in electric hot water tank to serve tea and coffee, and built-in tables that fold away. The new customised van was unveiled in April at Canterbury to much excitement and anticipation. A number of dignitaries attended the launch including Maronite Bishop of Australia His Excellency Bishop Antoine Charbel Tarabay, Tony Burke Federal Member for Watson, State Member for Canterbury Sophie Cotsis, President of Maronite Catholic Society Georges Bakhos, former Bankstown mayor Khal Asfour, Canterbury Director George Coorey and Canterbury CEO Dave Brace.

“Homelessness affects nearly 41 out of every 10,000 people every day and there are many causes including mental illness, victims of domestic violence and a shortage of affordable housing in this city. Nutritiously-balanced food goes a long way towards elevating hunger and fulfil a basic necessity of life,” said Dave Brace, CEO of Canterbury League Club.

The ANZAC Day march returning back to the Club after the service at the War Memorial at Lakemba Station

2017 ANZAC DAY SERVICE This year’s ANZAC Day Service attracted over 200 people to the front of The Lakemba Club at 7am for the march to the War Memorial at Lakemba Station to pay their respects to those that have served. Members of the Lakemba Sub-Branch were joined by student representatives from Bankstown La Salle High School, Lakemba Holy Spirit College and Wiley Park Girls High School as well as members of the local community for the march. Students Kye Kubenik, Joseph Killalea and Luke Lynch were selected as

flag bearers at the head of the march. The service was conducted by Rev Gary Rawson from St Therese Catholic Church and Rev Graeme Watkins from Lakemba Uniting Church. Wreaths were laid at the monument on behalf of the community followed by a minute’s silence to conclude the service. The march finished back at The Lakemba Club where everyone was invited for a free breakfast and lunch after the service. The ANZAC Day Service concluded the ANZAC activities for this year which started off with an ANZAC Dinner and

CAN T ERBURY BANKSTOW N T ENNIS & BOW LS CLUB

JOIN THE CANTERBURY BANKSTOWN LAWN BOWLING CLUB The Canterbury-Bankstown Tennis & Bowling Club has a small but active lawn bowling sub-club which meet weekly every Sunday. Over the past few months the bowling greens at the club have undergone a massive rejuvenation and a lot of work has happened to bring them up to perfect playing conditions. We spent five minutes with Jason Courtin, current member of the bowling club, to ask him about the new bowling greens and how interested new members can join.

How do interested new members join the bowling club? New bowlers can always come down any Sunday morning at 9.30am for a morning game of bowls. It costs $6 and there is a jackpot raffle plus meat trays. If they have a good time and are interested to join then it costs approximately $80 per year which includes your bowls shirt. To join, call the main club and leave your name and number and either myself or Bruce Snell will get back to them.

What does everyone think of the new greens? Speaking to the bowlers, they are very impressed with new greens and they can’t wait to see the new club renovations happen too. How often does the bowling club play in competitions? We compete in a few pennant grades and tournaments throughout the year. Some of the clubs we play against are Revesby, St Johns, Mt Lewis, Kemps Creek and Cabramatta just to name a few. What are the prizes for pennant winners? Winners get a pennant flag to show off and a pin badge. It doesn’t sound like much but it means a lot to those who actually win! Some tournaments will have cash prizes too.

Members of the Bowling Club meet every Sunday for a game
