CEO’S REPORT docks, kitchens and waste management facilities. In addition to reaching capacity, our back of house areas had become inefficient as they were situated throughout the building. The new purpose-built area will not only bring all our back of house services together in the one place which will save the Club money, it will also allow us to continue to expand upon our offerings to meet market demand well into the future. If you visited the Club in June, you will have noticed work commencing on a new area overlooking the internal atrium. This work is the construction of an exciting new bar, The Atrium Bar, overlooking the beautiful internal rainforest. The new bar, scheduled to open later this year, will feature a range of premium beverages and will be the perfect venue to enjoy a relaxed drink in a spectacular intimate setting.

Dear Members, It’s been a busy few months on the building front and it’s exciting seeing Members embrace the new and renovated areas of the Club. Behind the scenes, however, we’ve been just as busy and will shortly be opening a new production kitchen and loading dock. This new back of house area, while being the most inconspicuous part of the build from a customer point of view, is a really important project to ensure the success of Canterbury moving forward. As we had grown over the years we had gradually reached the capacity of our previous loading

Along with all the work on new areas, we have committed to renovating the Club’s iconic volcano water feature. This project will include a modernising of the mechanics of the volcano as well as a revitalisation of the gardens and landscaping. It will be fantastic to see the volcano up and running again better than ever, with the view able to be enjoyed from three separate al fresco areas in The Bistro, Bakehouse Café and Lavico Italian Ristorante. I look forward to seeing you around the Club.

DEVELOPMENT

Here’s a sneak peek of the new keg room

DEVELOPMENT IS NEARING COMPLETION Canterbury League Club’s redevelopment is nearing completion with new areas and facilities now open. The five-storey underground car park at the front of the Club is almost complete with more than 400 new spots available. For a smoother and easy transition into the Club, a new lift has been installed which travels from the carpark to the club. The entrance for the glass enclosed lift is near the volcano feature, which gives patrons an impression that they are travelling out of the water feature as they emerge directly in front of the club. Parts of the Club’s underground refurbishment has been complete which

includes development of a loading dock, waste removal area and production kitchens. The new underground area will help improve upon existing infrastructure and service delivery. During peak periods and game days, diehard Bulldog fans won’t need to worry about their favourite drink running out as the new keg room has been completed. Construction on the Atrium Bar has commenced and will become a unique focal point as you enter the Club. The new bar adjoins the grand staircase near the indoor atrium leading up to level 1. The Bistro’s new al fresco and adjoining inside area is reaching completion.

When finished, The Bistro will seat approximately 650 people. The indoor area has had large glass panels fitted around the shell to weather-proof the area. The outdoor balcony is currently under construction and will be transformed into a luxurious outdoor terrace. You can keep up-to date with all the latest development news by visiting our website and following our social media pages. Regular updates will also be available in every magazine. MKR MEETS CANTERBURY LEAGUE CLUB Six individuals from Canterbury League Club and Participate Australia’s cooking program have graduated with flying colours. The students were mentored by Canterbury League Club’s Executive Chef Stephanie Azar for 6 weeks. The memorable experience provides an opportunity for individuals with intellectual disabilities to cook simple and easy dishes which they can replicate at home. “I enjoy the cooking classes with Stephanie, as cooking in the production kitchen is like being in the MKR kitchen,” said graduate Diana Khoury. “My favorite part of the cooking program is learning from Stephanie and collaborating with others. I enjoy taking turns to try what Stephanie has shown.”

“Once or twice a week, I help my mum cook. I love to cook Tabbouleh and Fish with Tahini sauce.”

what they have cooked. The journey of watching them cook has been remarkable.”

Under Stephanie’s guidance, the students learn that anyone can cook while having fun in the kitchen.

The graduates from the cooking program are able to apply the skills that they have learnt when they are living independently.

“I enjoy teaching the small knit classes, as they are always bursting with energy and smiles as I teach them my little chef tricks,” said Stephanie Azar.

The cooking program began in 2017, and there are plans to increase the number of classes offered.

“I have taught the students how to cook a mix of mains, sides, salads and even desserts.” “Being part of the program is one of the highlights of my career. I have watched the students become involved in the entire cooking process from preparing and cutting ingredients to cooking the dish and kindly serving and eating

HELPING FAMILIES WITH PREMATURE BABIES Canterbury League Club has donated $15,000 to support the Miracle Babies Foundation in delivering expert care to newborn sick babies. The Club has supported the foundation since 2014 and the donation will go towards providing 500 NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care) Packs to families with a premature baby. Every year 48,000 babies require special assistance from a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) or Special Care Nursery (SCN). Of these babies, 27,000 are born premature and up to 1,000 will lose their fight for life. ‘Our continuous support represents hope to families that need it most and we are able to make a difference in the lives of newborns,’ said George Coorey, Chairman of Canterbury League Club.

6

‘No parent should have to go through this alone or watch their newborn fight for their life. During this overwhelming journey, the packs are available to provide support and guidance.’

The packs are very special to all families, especially the keepsake items as it is allows the parents to dress the baby. This provides a sense of normality for the parents.

The packs include: A guide book that covers most aspects and concerns shared by parents to give parents a better understanding of neonatal care • A beautiful journal to help families document and create a memento of their baby’s early life • Babylove premmie nappy • Water wipes that are the world’s purest baby wipes that contain no chemicals • A keepsake item that has been knitted and sewn from the generous community. This include beanies, booties and gowns • Details and information on local services through the community nurture groups

MEMBER OF THE MONTH: MICHAEL D’AGOSTINO Congratulations to our Member of the Month for July, Michael D’Agostino, who has been with us since 2014. At that time he was a 53 year old father weighing in at 114kg, 44% body fat and sporting a 44-inch waist.

BEFORE

He had been diagnosed with cardiomyopathy – a viral condition of the heart, which was quite literally killing the muscles around his heart. This left him with an operating valve injection rate of only 16.5% - Michael quite literally, should have died. It was during April 2016 where he decided to enlist the help of in-house trainer, Margaret, in order to “just show him the ropes”. Little did he know that two years and many kilograms later, he’d still be training with Margaret, twice a week, up until this very day! 25kg of weight loss later, halving his body fat percentage and dropping 4 waist sizes, it goes without saying that Michael very quickly became addicted to this new lifestyle. He trains 3 times a week, on top of his PT sessions and attending Spin, Pump and Abs classes on a regular basis. Michael would like to extend his thanks to the members and staff at C-Life; most especially Margaret, as well as Ray, Steve, Mat, Sandra, Liz and Sue.

MEET OUR NEWEST PERSONAL TRAINER: JOEY What’s your number one reason for getting into fitness and health? I’ve been playing rugby league since quite a young age, for as long as I can remember, as well as being into my athletics. I’ve always had a hunger for knowing how to develop better athletic capacity, motor skills and technique, so becoming a personal trainer was a no-brainer for me. I get to work in an industry that I love and that I’m passionate about! What makes you stand out from other Personal Trainers in the Industry? I believe I have a vibrant and enthusiastic attitude towards different methods and forms of training. As well as the fact that I like to take a holistic approach towards all facets of fitness. As a professional, I am able to cater to various needs, depending on the individual client.

What is your favourite machine in the Health Club? Without a doubt it would have to be the Bosu ball. It allows you to perform a number of functional exercises as well as stability exercises, which really help to engage that core. And it’s also one of the most under rated and unused pieces of equipment in the gym, very much the dark horse. What is your favourite group exercise class and why? HIIT because you never know what you’re going to expect on the day, the only thing you know for certain is that your heart rate is going to hit the roof and you’ll be sweating buckets. Favourite Quote Don’t stop when you’re tired, stop when you’re done.

NEW COURTS NOW OPEN Eager tennis players will be able to enjoy fresh new courts after the reconstruction of three of the tennis courts at Moxon Sports Club. Tennis court No.1, closest to the tennis clubhouse, was completely stripped of the old playing surface and resurfaced with a new synthetic layer. It now joins tennis courts No. 3 and No.4 which received a resurface recently. In addition, all the former fencing around the first tennis courts has been replaced with brand new black fencing and the area around them cleaned up. “All six courts are operational again for court hire and tennis lessons – I’m sure players will enjoy the challenge of playing on a hard court surface in addition to the other synthetic surfaces that we have,” said John Kellert, Head Coach at Kellert Tennis Academy which operates out of Moxon Sports Club. Tennis court bookings can be made on 0412 636 461. More information and court fees is available at moxonsports.com.au
