C E O RE P O R T Dear Members,

When I last wrote to you there was some talk that the Bulldogs would need to fight hard just to make the top eight. Well it is history now that after securing the seventh position they fought their way through to the Grand Final. Unfortunately, despite a courageous and valiant effort, the Rabbitohs were too good for us on this occasion. While we might not have won the game, Canterbury fans showed once again that they are the undisputed number one supporters in the NRL with Belmore in full party mode leading up to the Grand Final. Game day at Canterbury was a fantastic occasion with hundreds of fans staying late well into the night to welcome the team back to the Club and thank them for a magnificent year. We are already looking forward to next year and hopefully going one better in 2015. In October and November, General Meetings were held at Canterbury and Bay Sports to approve the de-amalgamation of The Bay Sports Club so that they may amalgamate with Wyong Leagues Club. I am pleased to report that Members supported the proposal and the process is now underway to formalise the arrangements with Wyong. We expect that this process will take several months to complete and during this time it will be business as usual for Bay Sports. At the same General Meeting, Members also accepted a proposal to finalise the closure and sale of the Earlwood Ex-Servicemen’s Club, which involves the sale of the Earlwood Property and the transfer of the remaining gaming machine entitlements to The Lakemba Club. We expect this process to be completed in 2015.

In October the renovations to Canterbury commenced with pre-construction works around Flame Pizza + Grill. This initial construction work involves the excavation underneath Flame but will only result in minimal disruption to Members and Guests. Flame may close for some lunch periods if noise and vibration become an issue so please keep an eye on our website for details. On 8 December the next phase of Canterbury’s loyalty program Engage Rewards will be launched, with five different levels of rewards being introduced. This is on top of the fantastic rewards that you already receive as a Member. One of the changes that you will notice is that from next year your birthday reward will change from the existing vouchers to an open gift card that you can spend in the Club however you choose. On behalf of the Board, Management and Staff of Canterbury I would like to wish all of our Members a Merry Christmas and a safe and prosperous new year. Christmas is a wonderful time of the year at Canterbury and we are again going all out with the decorations. The Club will be sparkling as usual and Santa will be here nightly to meet with children. As Christmas approaches we will also have carollers in the foyer every night. If you have not experienced Canterbury in December I strongly encourage you to visit and join in the festive celebrations. Why not have a family get together or your work Christmas party at Canterbury. I look forward to seeing you around the Club.

2014 Canterbury Staff Service Awards

Staff with their 25 Year Service Awards together with Chairman Dr George Peponis

Seventy long-serving staff members were acknowledged and thanked at the recent Canterbury League Club Staff Service Awards. The awards recognised staff who have provided 5, 10, 15, 20 and 25 years of service to the Canterbury group. The dinner and ceremony was held in the

Helping kids take their first step A Canterbury League Club donation of $20,000 to Variety – the Children’s Charity really has the ability to create wonders for children who are sick, disadvantaged or have special needs. This is the story of four-year-old Harry from Ashbury, one of the lucky recipients who received a new walker through a portion of Canterbury’s contribution. Harry has the developmental age of a six-month old, cannot walk or speak, is severely vision impaired and needs help for all of his self-care requirements. He attends The Infants’ Home school at Ashfield five days a week, where he regularly accesses specialised teaching from occupational and play therapists, and a speech therapist who is slowly teaching him sign language to enable him to communicate with others.

08

Harry’s walker has made an amazing difference to his quality of life. His mother Emma explains, “During the week the walker stays at school, and Harry spends most of his time in it. He adores being around his school friends, loving nothing more than being immersed in all of the noise and activities. He’s a very popular boy, and in his walker he is at eye level with his peers, which is vital for meaningful interaction with them. He can now even propel himself for short distances.

health and social interactions. It will also be easier to care for him on a daily basis when he becomes too heavy to lift safely. “One of Canterbury’s main funding goals this year is to assist children in need within our community because it is harder for them to have a voice. Variety – the Children’s Charity is just one of the fantastic organisations that helps and supports kids to lead happier, more enriching lives,” said Dr George Peponis OAM, Chairman of Canterbury League Club.

“The walker enables him to put weight on his legs, which will make them stronger, and there is now a good chance that in the future he may be able to stand unaided, and there is a possibility that he could even be able to walk.” The family will be extremely happy if Harry is able to stand because it will improve his

Big change for little champions a permanent presence in every major children’s hospital right around the country. What we do with the Starlight Express Rooms is to come into a hospital with something that is so different from life in the ward and give all the children and their families a chance to be children again, to be happy and have fun,” said Louise Baxter, CEO of Starlight Children’s Foundation Australia. Presenting Canterbury’s cheque to The Footy Show’s Darryl Brohman and Michael Slater

For the second year in a row, Canterbury League Club has provided a $20,000 donation to The Footy Show’s ‘Big Change For Little Champions’ Telethon in support of Starlight Children’s Foundation Australia. Dr George Peponis OAM, Chairman of Canterbury League Club, was there on the night to present the large cheque to Starlight as well as to rub shoulders with all the fantastic Captain Starlights and volunteers who made the night possible. Over $475,000 was raised from 2,686 phone calls from generous supporters during

this year’s telethon, smashing last year’s fundraising figures, with all monies going towards supporting Starlight’s in-hospital Starlight Express Room program. This year Starlight’s goal was to raise enough money to make a difference to the lives of 15,000 children who visit their Starlight Express Rooms every year. The current amount is enough to help over 12,000 children with Canterbury’s donation responsible for 512 of those children.

Since forming in 1988, Starlight has been lifting the spirits of seriously-ill children and their families with their Starlight programs including the Starlight Express Rooms, Starlight Wishgranting and Captain Starlight. “The atmosphere at Starlight Telethon HQ on the night was electrifying; it was fantastic to be there on behalf of Canterbury right in that moment, surrounded by so many people backing the same great cause – helping thousands of seriously-ill children feel like kids again. Starlight does amazing work for the community and Canterbury is proud to be supporting them,” said Dr George Peponis.

Grand Final Day at Canterbury

Fireworks to celebrate the players’ return

The excitement was palpable in the air and the atmosphere festive in a wash of blue and white – on Sunday 5 October Bulldogs supporters descended on Canterbury League Club to watch the 2014 NRL Grand Final play out. For fans that couldn’t make it to ANZ Stadium to watch it live, Canterbury was the next best place to be to watch the game. It was operating at full capacity with over two thousand Members and Guests watching the game on over 20 purposely-installed television screens all around the Club.

Grand Final decorations

“The turnout at Canterbury for Grand Final Day was amazing – everywhere you looked there was a sea of blue and white supporters, and people smiling and cheering. It was the most electrifying atmosphere; you get to see first hand the overwhelming passion Bulldogs supporters have for their team,” said Dave Brace, CEO of Canterbury League Club. “All of us wished for a better result in the game but the boys still played a great match against a tough opponent and have had a wonderful season. Their hard work and dedication saw them through to the Grand Final and that is a fantastic achievement in itself.” Canterbury held several special events to celebrate Grand Final Day and Membersand Guests who stayed back were treated to a view of the players when they made their way back to the Club after the game. Fans had the opportunity to cheer the players while the players had the chance to say thank you to their devoted fans that have supported them throughout the year. “The entire day went smoothly; fans were very well behaved. The Club had extra staff on the day to ensure Members and Guests could enjoy the game in a safe environment. I would like to thank the entire Canterbury team for their efforts in pulling off an unforgettable day,” said Dave Brace. “Congratulations to the Bulldogs for a great 2014 season. We wish them the best for next year”.

Hairy moustaches to start Movember conversation Over 60 staff members including Canterbury CEO Dave Brace and COO Jon Brain took on the challenge to grow a moustache to raise funds and awareness for men’s health during the month of November. Canterbury Mo Bros and Mo Sistas, affectionately known as the ‘Canterbury Moustache League’, had a goal to raise $5,000 over the course of the month with Canterbury pledging to match every dollar, up to $10,000, fundraised by participating staff. All funds raised go back to the Movember Foundation. “It was fantastic to see so many Canterbury staff participate in Movember and actively work together to make a change for men’s health in our community,” said Dave Brace, CEO of Canterbury League Club. “Awareness programs like Movember are fantastic in reducing the stigma associated with men not wanting to speak to their doctors about their personal health until

BELFIELD RSL

W rest l i n g fo r a g re at c au s e Belfield RSL was transformed into a site of wrestling mania on Friday 24 October to raise funds for children with autism. Over 300 wrestling fans, families and kids turned up to the special charity event organised by Lony Lamy and Veronica Ayoub, aka ‘Mr & Mrs Fury’, and presented by Furious Wrestling Productions. In total, over $3,780 was raised from ticket sales, raffles and collection tins passed around on the night. All monies were donated to Autism Awareness “We chose to fundraise for Autism Awareness Australia, which raises awareness in the community through educational programs, because they haven’t been as heavily recognised as some of the other more well-known charities. Everybody, from the wrestlers, to the referees, security, music and lighting guys, all donated their time and energy to make such a worthwhile event happen,” said Lamy, Team Leader at C-Life Health Club. On the night there was a hip hop show by NeWest and several prematches before the highlight match between Mr Fury and Massive Q. Dave Brace, CEO of Canterbury League Club, made a guest appearance at the end of the night to show Massive Q’s evil manager, Lord Mark Williamson, who’s the boss with an entertaining takedown, much to the glee of the audience. “It was the first time we’ve ever held a production like this and I had the right people making it a successful event. We had lots of people coming up to us saying that it was a great night and that they really enjoyed themselves,” said Lamy. Thank you to all who attended and donated to this amazing night.
