I hope you all have a great day. Welcome to your newly redesigned Journal. Over the past couple of years we have been refining your quarterly Member magazine and I hope you enjoy the latest version. In addition to the print copy, you can now also receive the magazine on Apple devices. Search for “Canterbury Leagues” in the app store to receive the electronic copy. As advised in the last Journal we have accepted a proposal from Wyong Leagues Club which will see them acquire the Bay Sports Club. Included with the copy of this Journal, which was mailed to Members, was a Notice of Meeting for a General Meeting where Members will be asked to vote to de-amalgamate with The Bay Sports Club so that they can then amalgamate with Wyong Leagues Club. At the same General Meeting, Members will also be asked to vote on a resolution to dispose of the remaining assets of the recently closed Earlwood Ex Servicemen’s Club. For further information please refer to the Notice of Meeting, a separate copy of which can also be found on our website. In July we launched Engage Rewards into our Sydney clubs. Engage Rewards is Canterbury’s exclusive loyalty program for Members where you can use your card whenever you pay, play or dine to

earn Engage Points. You can then exchange your Engage Points for fantastic rewards. You can spend your points to purchase food and beverage at any of our bars and restaurants, pay your bills via BPay or purchase a Gift Card from retailers including Woolworths, JB Hi-Fi, Caltex and many more from the Pit Stop Machine located on the Gaming Floor. You can also purchase pre-paid mobile phone top ups from all the major carriers using your points, cash or credit card. On page 4 you will find an article detailing the Canterbury redevelopment project. A large part of this development involves improving our infrastructure. This is important not only for this project, but also to ensure that the Club can continue to expand into the future, including the ability to construct high rise developments on top of the club. While the article in this Journal describes the various phases of the project in high level detail, as we refine each area with our architects, we will continue to update Members via the Journal and on our website. The first stage which involves excavating under the Flame Restaurant should commence shortly after you receive this journal. As with all stages, we have carefully planned the building works to minimise disruption. I hope you enjoy watching the Club grow. I look forward to seeing you around the Club.

DEVELOPMENT

e v o l v i n g for t h e future After significant planning we will shortly break ground on the largest development ever undertaken at Canterbury. With a project as large as this, the work will be broken into several packages, which are then put out to tender. The entire project is expected to take approximately three and a half to four years to complete and will be staged to ensure that there is a minimal disruption to Members and Guests. Following is an overview of the development. Arrive in comfort One of the features that has always set Canterbury apart from other venues has been the provision of excellent parking facilities. To ensure that Members can continue to enjoy ample premium parking, one of the first development stages will be the construction of a large underground car park in front of the Club. This new car park will be accessed almost directly off Bridge Road and will have over 450 spaces, all of which will be undercover. You will be able to enter the Club from the car park via a lift that will deliver you to the Club’s main entrance. This new car park will bring our total car parking capacity to almost 1,500, again almost all of which will be undercover with easy access into the Club.

04

As a bonus for Members, the new car park will be constructed in such a way that there will only be minimal impact upon existing parking during the building phase and Members will continue to enjoy the same excellent parking facilities as always. Building a foundation for the future To ensure that Canterbury can deliver not only this project but future projects, it is necessary to upgrade the Club’s ageing infrastructure. Work will include the construction of a large central underground loading dock, the construction of a large underground production kitchen and a smaller production kitchen under Flame Pizza + Grill. These facilities will significantly improve the quality and efficiency of our restaurant and bar operations, as well as providing the capacity necessary to develop into the future including for a hotel. The Club’s existing administration facilities arecurrently spread out across the existing building and a new office space will be constructed to accommodate the team in a single area.

Gaming Floor The main gaming floor will be expanded towards Bridge Road and over the existing car park entry. This increased space will allow the consolidation of all gaming into the one area. An iconic dining destination One of the major focusses of the development is the improvement of the Club’s dining offering for Members. This will include the construction of new outlets as well as an expansion of some of our existing restaurants. A new 24 hour casual dining restaurant will be constructed on the ground floor of the Northern Wing of the Club between reception and Flame Pizza + Grill. This restaurant will serve a range of cook to order meals and will seat approximately 200 people in a mixture of internal, outdoor and lounge seating areas. This restaurant will also act as the Club’s main café offering. Flame Pizza + Grill will be expanded with the existing Flame Coffee Shop becoming part of the restaurant and the existing bar and servery being reconfigured.

S pr i n g 2 0 1 4

The Banyan Brasserie will expand towards Bridge Road with a new al fresco section added. With the growth of family dining, a larger redesigned Galaxy Play Area will be built on the site of the existing loading dock with additional seating around it for an improved family dining experience. With the proposed consolidation of the two existing gaming floors into a single main location, there is also the potential to convert the existing Trumps area into a new dining facility and we will keep you posted as these plans progress. Along with the physical construction, we are also reviewing our full suite of restaurants with a view to providing the right mix of cuisine choices and service styles for our Members. It is envisaged that this will see a number of changes to our existing outlets along with the launch of the exciting new outlets. Entertainment for everyone Canterbury’s commitment to provide quality entertainment to Members will be reaffirmed with the construction of a new showroom on level 1. The new showroom will be designed to provide a number of seating configurations such as table and theatre style and will have approximately twice the capacity of the existing Paragon Room. This will enable the Club to attract higher calibre performers than we are presently able to with our small capacity room.

Above the new 24 hour casual dining restaurant, an intimate new ‘cocktail’ style bar will be built. This exclusive and stylish space will have small internal and outdoor lounges with a range of premium beverages. The existing Bulldogs Sports Bar will receive a makeover with a larger outdoor area constructed in the place of an existing loading dock that will be relocated. The existing snooker tables will be moved to the basement Indoor Sports Bar which be refurbished for the full suite of indoor sports. Celebrate a special occasion The existing Blueberry Hill function room will be redeveloped to provide a number of smaller spaces that can be joined to make one larger room. These smaller rooms will allow the Club to be more competitive in the business function space while also providing a more modern, comfortable room for Member functions such as birthdays, weddings etc. The rooms will be fitted with the latest audio visual technology and will have access to pre-function areas.

Follow the progress You can keep up-to-date with all the latest construction news by following our website, Facebook and Twitter pages. Regular updates will also be posted in the Club’s quarterly Journal. Follow Canterbury CanterburyLeaguesClub

Artist impressions of Canterbury’s redevelopment

Enjoy the company of friends & family One of the areas missing from Canterbury in recent years is a main central bar and lounge for Members to meet up over a drink or two and enjoy some casual entertainment. With the construction of a new purpose built show room on level 1, the existing Paragon Room will be opened up and converted into a new lounge and bar, with a new outdoor area to be constructed at the end of the room. This lounge will have a small stage for casual entertainment. In order to maintain our existing show market, the construction of this area will be one of the last areas to be built and will follow the construction of the new showroom on level 1.

Running for a great cause “It’s great to see C-Life members and staff members take their fitness to the next level and set themselves the challenge of doing the City 2 Surf. It was a great event for everyone though I’m sure many of us felt sore the next day – but it’s all for a good cause!” said Arthur Siambis, General Manager of C-Life. The race kicked off at Hyde Park, wound around Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs before finally finishing at beautiful Bondi Beach. Since the inaugural race in 1971, the City 2 Surf has become one of the world’s largest running races.

Team Canterbury ready to take on the 2014 City 2 Surf

Team Canterbury has joined over 80,000 other participants to cross the finish line at the recent 2014 City 2 Surf after taking on the gruelling 14 kilometre course on Sunday 10 August. There were 37 participants in this year’s City 2 Surf Team Canterbury – 20 staff members,

10 C-Life members, 6 Bulldogs staff and 1 Canterbury member.

Over $4.3 million was raised this year to support more than 800 charities including beyondblue, Sydney Children’s Hospital Foundation, St Vincent de Paul, and Camp Quality.

There were plenty of sore legs, tired muscles and stiff joints afterwards but Team Canterbury had a fun day out and successfully Thank you to everyone who participated in the 2014 City 2 Surf Team Canterbury. Hope to raised over $2,000 for The National Breast see you again next year! Cancer Foundation. a more home-like atmosphere and encourage communication, participation, interaction and enjoyment,” said Sussan Beky, St Basil’s Leisure & Lifestyle Coordinator.

Residents of St Basil’s nursing home enjoying their updated facilities

111 high-care residents call St Basil’s home and Beky has noted that residents are pleased with the changes and have responded well. Still on the cards is the purchase of a new BBQ set, more outdoor furniture, art equipment and gardening materials.

Local NURSING HOME gets a boost from Canterbury Canterbury League Club’s generous $25,000 donation has enabled St Basil’s Homes in Lakemba to purchase new equipment for their aged care facility. St Basil’s Resident Lifestyle Project was created to improve the quality of life for residents by enhancing their cultural, leisure and spiritual experience while living at the home.

06

Halfway through the project, residents are already enjoying the benefits of the new audio and visual equipment in the lounge areas, a new outdoor sail and tinted windows to protect residents from UV rays, a new fridge as well as new dining room chairs. “We wanted to make realistic changes in our facility that would impact on the majority of our residents. These changes will also create

“Having our own BBQ will help stimulate our residents’ sense of smell and hopefully they will want to engage with other residents while using it,” said Beky. “St Basil’s does a lot of good work ensuring their residents have a safe and enriching experience during their stay. More needs to be done for aged care facilities around the state to make sure we do not neglect a generation that has contributed so much to our society,” said Dr George Peponis OAM, Chairman of Canterbury League Club.

MIRACLE cribs saving precious newborn lives A $10,000 donation from Canterbury League Club has helped Miracles Babies Foundation deliver expert care to newborn sick babies. The situation is serious – every year over 45,000 newborn babies nationally need special assistance from a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU); over half of the babies have been born prematurely or face post-birth complications. “This donation will go a long way to helping our local families in the Bankstown, Liverpool and surrounding areas. Liverpool Public Hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit cares for up to 1000 babies every year requiring specialised care,” said Melinda Cruz, CEO and Founder of Miracle Babies Foundation. Miracle Babies was founded in 2005 by Melinda and a group of mothers joined together by the experience of having premature and sick newborns. Initially operating out of Liverpool Public Hospital’s NICU, Miracle Babies now offers Australiawide services with their in-hospital program available at 11 major hospitals in different states. “The shock and emotional turmoil for families when a baby arrives early or critically ill is overwhelming and can be devastating. Through our NurtureProgram, families have access to ongoing support through our 24 hour helpline, in hospital support and ongoing support to assist with the challenges and transition to home after discharge. The donation from Canterbury League Club helps to continue and expand these services for local families,” said Melinda.

Miracle Babies Brand Ambassador Sam Perrett with Miracle Babies Chairman Morris Iemma and Canterbury CEO Dave Brace

Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs player, Sam Perrett, became a Miracle Babies ambassador after the birth of his third child who needed urgent surgery post-birth. “Our youngest, Sam Jnr, was born premature with a heart condition and spent time in the NICU. The Miracle Babies Foundation NurtureProgram is vitally important for families and we are thrilled to help and support Miracle Babies

Foundation,” said Sam. “Miracle Babies do more than just deliver a service; they provide vital support and useful advice, and are an understanding and friendly sounding board for parents who are going through the traumatic experience of having a fragile newborn – they are there every step of the way,” said Dave Brace, CEO of Canterbury League Club.

Coats to keep the homeless warm For the third year in a row, Canterbury League Club has donated $2,000 to Order of Malta’s ‘Coats for the Homeless’ program. The donation is enough to buy 60 of the specially-designed, warm showerproof coats which, in early July, have been distributed to some of the 20,000 Australians sleeping rough on the streets.

This year, the Order has distributed 2,800 coats across Australia – a 12 per cent increase on last year’s number. The design for the coats arose from feedback received from interviews with people who have experienced life on the streets. The coats are black to be less noticeable in dark alleys and parks, thus reducing the chances of being assaulted; they have

internal pockets for valuables; and are portable and mobile. “These coats can represent a lifeline to those living on the streets – it keeps them dry and comfortable, gives them shelter and can be the difference between keeping warm or freezing in the night,” said Dr George Peponis OAM, Chairman of Canterbury League Club.

Staff from Koorana Child & Family Services presented with a cheque for $28,683

Local groups receive funding boost Canterbury League Club recently donated more than $250,000 to 23 different local organisations. Each recipient received funding to run specific health and social welfare programs that assist different groups in need within the community including family support, aged, disability, early childhood and youth services.

Child & Family Services, was one of the successful recipients in this year’s Canterbury ClubGRANTS funding and received over $28,000 to help with their Early Connections project which provides intervention services to families with preschool-aged children with a disability and/or challenging behaviours.

Amongst those supported this year include Canterbury Community Hub and Chinese Australia Services Society in Campsie, Canterbury City Community Centre and Canterbury Vale School based in Lakemba.

Vicki Battisti, CEO for Koorana, said: “The ClubsGRANTS Program has provided Koorana with funds to deliver nearly 15 different initiatives over the last 7 years. Without this, we would not be able to offer much needed additional support to families who have a young child with a disability.”

Local Belmore organisation, Koorana

Canterbury is a passionate supporter

of local communities and every year donates over $1 million to various notfor-profit organisations, charities, schools and sporting groups as well as providing scholarships to young people. In the past year, Canterbury has supported over 120 recipient groups with vital funding and item donations. “Each of these organisations is addressing a serious need within the community and it will help improve the lives of those doing it tough. Canterbury is committed to giving back to the community and providing opportunities to those who need it the most,” said Dr George Peponis OAM, Chairman of Canterbury League Club.

SPRING 2014

C-LIFE membership helps bright spark His fun personality infuses his bright eyes and his cheeky grin just makes you want to return one of your own – upon meeting Greenacre local Moustafa Ardati, you feel instantly at ease. It’s not long before you see past his wheelchair and meet the real Moustie: a mischievous and funny gentleman, and a mad Bulldogs supporter to boot. Moustie was born with cerebral palsy, a permanent disorder that affects a person’s ability to move – but he hasn’t let that stop him. If anything, it spurs him on to greater heights because he knows he is one of the lucky ones. “Being born with cerebral palsy is quite a challenging feat. I’ve watched others complain about the little amount of independency they had; while I hadn’t any. I could only dream of where I would have been had I any,” said Moustie. In 2011 Moustie jumpstarted his life by beginning weight training. With the help of personal trainers and a personalised exercise plan, he has gained the use of his right arm, increased his confidence and self-esteem, and allowed him to speak more clearly without losing his breath. But his progress has come at a cost. “Financial circumstance has been a major barrier in terms of training as I require assistance, e.g. a personal trainer. Not being able to train for close to a year made me somewhat frustrated as it felt like I was hitting the pause button on my life,” said Moustie. When Canterbury League Club heard about Moustie’s story, they responded by providing him with a complimentary membership to C-Life Health Club so that Moustie has the space to continue to train with his personal trainers who volunteer their time to help him.

Moustie and his trainer enjoying the efforts of their hardwork

“Physical exercise has contributed to improving all facets of my life and has enabled me to gain some sense of independency. Exercising has given me the life I never had; the life which I wished to have. I am now able to enjoy my hobbies, focus on work and concentrate on my future endeavours.” Moustie is currently studying for his masters degree and works as a web designer. He represented Australia in wheelchair-powered football in Brazil last April and was selected

to play for Australia in the electric wheelchair world championships hockey in August. He hopes to move towards a full time career in motivational speaking. “It is inspirational to see this young man achieve so much even though he has more challenges to overcome compared to others. He embodies what a healthy and positive mindset coupled with determination can do when you set your mind to it,” said Dr George Peponis OAM, Chairman of Canterbury League Club.

E N T E R T AI N M E N T

C ha n g e s to C a n te r b u r y E n te r ta i n me n t Canterbury has a long and proud tradition of providing entertainment for Members and Guests and with the recent commitment to build a larger showroom and entertainment lounge (see page 4) that commitment is set to increase further over the next few years. To ensure that we continue to provide quality entertainment that is relevant to our Members, the full entertainment program was recently reviewed for the first time in many years. As a result of this review a number of changes have been made to the entertainment program which takes effect from this Journal. The review indicated that whilst entertainment was, for the most part, well regarded, the variety of shows and bands had become quite limited. With Canterbury now having close to 50,000 members and growing rapidly, it is more important than ever to ensure that the Club’s significant entertainment budget is

distributed across all of our Members.

Unfortunately Sunday afternoon shows have been falling in popularity across the industry for many years and they were simply not sustainable any further.

Friday Nights will continue to be the Club’s main free entertainment offering with a focus on dance bands. Under the new program you will see an increased number of new bands like Victoria Avenue on 7 November and some old favourites like the One Hit Wonders on 17 October.

Children’s entertainment continues to be extremely popular and mums, dads and grandparents will be pleased to note that we have added even more shows for the September school holidays.

Saturday Night is the club’s main entertainment night. Following a review of attendances over previous years, the Saturday Showtime shows on the first Saturday of each month have been discontinued. In their place will be higher quality performers such as Tom Burlinson on 6 December. You will also see a greater variety of shows and we are excited to have a quality performer like Jon Stevens playing at Canterbury on 11 October.

We understand that some Members may be disappointed with these changes; however it is important to understand that Canterbury is a large Club with a large number of Members and it is our responsibility to provide entertainment and facilities for all our Members, not just a select few.

Due to falling patronage over the years the Sunday Concerts are being discontinued.

If you have suggestions for an act that you would like to see at Canterbury, drop us a line at marketing@canterbury.com.au
