CEO’S REPORT to reacquaint yourself with this family favourite restaurant. With the trend towards healthier and cleaner eating, you will find a terrific selection of healthy meals and salads to accompany the traditional favourites. To view the Banyan menu along with menus for our other restaurants simply visit canterbury.com.au or download the Canterbury App from the iTunes or Google Play stores. Despite some less than stellar weather over the past couple of months, including January 2016 being the wettest January since 1988, work continues to progress on construction of our new car park at the front of the Club and if you visit now you can see just how big this new structure will be. Internally, work has begun on the fitout of the Bakehouse Café and this restaurant continues to progress on schedule for an opening later this year. You will also notice some small works happening in other areas around the Club. Many of these are preliminary works that we are doing to ensure there is little to no disruption to our services throughout the build. Dear Members, Happy Easter to everyone. March is a pretty special time around Canterbury because it marks the start of the NRL season. On Friday 4 March the Bulldogs kick off their 2016 campaign against cross city rivals, the Manly Sea Eagles. There is a real sense of anticipation around this year with some shrewd off-season recruiting seeing the immensely talented Will Hopoate joining the blue and whites. Then there is the reduction in the number of interchanges allowed in the game this year meaning that most of the big men have trained super hard during the offseason and are fitter and faster than they have ever been. As always we will be showing all the Bulldogs games live in the Bulldogs Sports Bar and there are some excellent specials on offer to have while you enjoy the game.

This year Canterbury will again play an integral role in the official ANZAC Day Dawn Service in Sydney, by producing the official program. The Lakemba Club was one of the founding clubs that started the ANZAC Dawn Service and we are proud that we can continue to support the Dawn Service on the Centenary of the Western Front. I encourage everyone to attend either the Lakemba Dawn Service or the Dawn Service at Martin Place and remember the sacrifices made by those who fought for our country. I look forward to seeing you around the Club.

CANTERBURY ONE W ITH THE COMMUNIT Y As part of Canterbury’s commitment to the local community, the past 12 months has seen the Club take part in an unprecedented number of give-back programs.

In that time Canterbury has donated more than $1.15 million into the local community to run various programs and activities, amongst them, Horizon Theatre’s drama workshop for people with disabilities, a new surgical laser for Canterbury Hospital, and a health and wellness program for children at Lakemba Public School. An additional 149 local organisations, schools, and sporting groups have also benefitted in the past year. Canterbury staff have also taken a more active part in volunteering their time for a good cause. On the last Thursday of every month, staff have been helping Punchbowl group, Maronites on Mission, distribute

food to the homeless at Woolloomooloo and Martin Place. Canterbury Chairman Dr George Peponis OAM and Director Ray Dib and his wife also joined the action to help hand out 160 hot meals, sandwiches, fruit, snacks and drinks to the homeless. “Ray and I really enjoyed our experience that night and we got to see first-hand how these food runs play an important role to provide well-balanced and nutritious meals. In addition to our staff assisting with the food runs, we are pleased to be able donate $50,000 towards the purchase of a second food van for them to improve their service even more,” said Dr George. Aside from Board Members, a large group of 32 Canterbury staff also spent the afternoon celebrating Oxi Day with over 100 residents of St Basil’s Nursing Home at Lakemba where everyone ate, drank, danced and generally had a great time.

“St Basil’s is one of our key community partners and this was a perfect way for Canterbury to give back to the local community. Residents at nursing homes can sometimes feel isolated and alone because they might not get to see their families as often – a festive day like this, which encourages interaction and participation, can go a long way towards improving their day and putting a smile back on their faces,” said Dave Brace, CEO of Canterbury League Club. In 2016, Canterbury plans to support even more local organisations and has

a jam-packed calendar of community events kicking off with a staff-led World’s Greatest Shave BBQ lunch, Cancer Council’s Biggest Morning Tea in May, supporting Jeans for Genes Day and October Breast Cancer Awareness Month just to name a few.

COMMUNITY they need to do is get a referral stating the reasons for the transport and once received they are eligible for the service.” The service receives bookings from patients living in and around Sydney including Canterbury and Bankstown areas. Since opening their doors in 2004 where they received 976 bookings, the service now gets over 8,200 bookings a year and relies on the help of 40 volunteers and drivers.

FREE TRANSPORT SERVICE BOOSTING MOBILITY AMONGST PATIENTS A $15,000 donation from Canterbury League Club has gone a long way towards boosting Sir Roden & Lady Cutler Foundation’s vital patient transport service around the local Canterbury area. The free service, called Pick Me Up, assists the elderly and people with disabilities with transport to and from hospital and critical medical appointments. This service is provided in memory of Sir

Roden Cutler and his efforts to help people with mobility issues similar to those he encountered after losing his leg during World War II. “It is a unique service that goes door to door, is flexible and importantly free to anyone who uses it. It also helps the patient re-connect with society by offering them the ability to talk and associate with others by once again being active and getting involved within their local community,” said Vince Del Zio, CEO of Sir Roden & Lady Cutler Foundation. “People are referred to our service by hospitals, doctors, specialists, aged care workers and social care workers. Daniel recently came second in the regional stage of the competition after impressing judges with his showmanship and technique in table and wine service, cocktail service, food handling and customer service experience. “The judges look for how calm you are, your food hygiene and presentation of everything. They look at how steady your hands are and how you shake, muddle and stir your cocktails. The main thing they look for in everything is consistency – from your wine pouring to the table setting of knives and forks, down to if the wine and water glasses match up,” said Daniel. Daniel is currently training two to three times a week at Ryde TAFE College in the lead up to the national level of the World Skills competition which will be held

“It gives the volunteers a huge personal boost by providing them with an activity that they find fulfilling and very satisfying. They don’t just drive – they become an important part of the lives of our clients; their companion, confidant, friend and more importantly, they assist in the recovery of those whose intention it is to regain their independence and resume their place as an involved member of society,” said Vince. “The foundation currently has eight vehicles to use in their patient transport program and Canterbury’s donation has gone towards helping pay for fuel and maintenance costs. Patients that put off visiting their doctors because it is too difficult to attend, run the chance of their condition worsening and putting their health at risk,” said Dr George Peponis OAM, Chairman of Canterbury League Club.

in Melbourne in October this year. The three-day event will test his skills in Fine Dining, Casual Dining and Bar work. Aside from his training sessions with his teachers, he is also brushing up his silver service skills at Canterbury League Club’s Flame Pizza + Grill restaurant where he works as a Food and Beverage Attendant. “We are very proud of Daniel and his dedication to his training; he has been a wonderful addition to our Food and Beverage team and has a great personality. It is an exciting time for him right now and we wish him the best of luck at the World Skills competition,” said Dave Brace, CEO of Canterbury League Club.

DEVELOPMENT

TEMPORARY DRIVEWAY UP AND RUNNING The excavation of the new underground car park has already started in earnest. Workers are currently digging down approximately 15 meters and excavating 62,000m³ of rock and soil to build the five level car park. The car park excavation will take approximately 30 weeks and Canterbury will gain around 330 extra car spaces which will help when the Club is running at full capacity. The new underground car park will have an entrance in a similar place to the old one and when this becomes operational, the temporary driveway will be converted into the warehouse entry ramp that connects the stores and production areas.

The gantry leading into the car park behind the Club is currently operating as a work platform for Parkview Group to build the new Banyan extension and mezzanine level. They have started pouring the concrete to form the second floor and the pylons which will hold the entire structure up. Once the concrete has set, workers will be able to start building the walls and roof. This extra extension will create space for Banyan’s new outdoor alfresco dining area which will seat an extra 200 patrons. Parkview has done a fantastic job constructing the shell of the Bakehouse Café and cocktail lounge. Another company, MPA, has won the tender to complete the interior fit out of the café and prepare it for its opening later in the year. Once this phase of construction has been completed, it will be a beautiful

light-filled space with the new café and lounge that will really engage Members and guests to use the area. Watch out for the café’s new menu in the upcoming months to find out the exciting new dishes coming to the table. You can keep up-to-date with all the latest development news by following the Canterbury website, Facebook and Twitter pages. Regular updates will also be available in every Journal. MEET THE TRAINER NOOR UDDIN What do you love most about working at C-Life? It’s not work if you love what you do! It’s a cliché I know but my clients, members and staff make it happen. I’m always grateful for that. If you could work in any other industry what would it be? I’ve always had an interest in property and any job that allows me to travel the world!

Meet one of our trainers, Noor. Noor is one of C-Life’s most popular trainers, conducting between 20-25 personal training sessions a week. Noor is also studying a double degree in Sports and Exercise Science and Sports Management. He is outgoing and enthusiastic which makes him very popular with C-Life members. What makes you stand out from other Personal Trainers in the industry? I love what I do; I have a unique approach to training which gets amazing results. It’s all about the client’s journey and not me.

If you could eat only one thing for the rest of your life, what would it be? I should be recommending something very high in nutritional value but I love my lollies, pizza and Snickers Pods! What is your favourite song to exercise to? Chill Nation on YouTube has a good playlist but you can’t go wrong with Justin Bieber. What is your favourite machine in the Health Club? All my clients would say “LEG PRESS” and I agree!

Available ENJOY YOUR WORKOUT WHILE YOUR CHILD ENJOYS A VARIETY OF ARTS, CRAFTS AND GAMES.

What is your favourite group exercise class and why? C-Life offers a range of group exercise classes run by many talented instructors but seeing Revive by Norma (class instructor) always puts a smile on my face. It shows fitness and health is a lifestyle choice and it’s never too late to exercise. What is the best piece of advice your parents gave you? “One day, you will be just a memory for some people, do your best to be a good one”. Resistance or cardio, which do you prefer? I always want my clients to be the strongest version of themselves and that can be achieved with resistance training with the correct form.

Jenny

W hat’s t he best t hing about working in Lakemba? I love t he atmosphere of t he c lub; it’s small enough t hat everyone knows everybody and gives it t hat really f riend ly vibe. I also enjoy working wit h ot her staff members, we are like one big family. W hat’s your favourite t hing to eat off t he café menu? Definitely t he F is h & Chips and it’s really popular wit h our patrons too. If you had superpowers what would t hey be? I’d want to have t he type of superpower t hat would help me c hange t he world to be a better place.

Jenny is a familiar face around The Lakemba Club af ter having worked there for over seven year s, f ir st behind the previous bistro counter and currently as a café at tendant .

If you won Lotto what would you do wit h it? I’ve al ways told my son t hat I’ll donate half of it to c harity and use t he rest to travel t he world. I hope to keep t hat promise to my son!
