J U LY/CAEUOG’ SU SRTE P2 O 0R 1 5T We are immensely proud that our Chairman Dr George Peponis OAM and fellow Canterbury League Club Director Steve Mortimer OAM were honoured as inaugural inductees into the Hall of Fame. Both George and Steve were honoured for their contributions both on and off the field, with both continuing to work tirelessly for the Football and League clubs decades after their playing careers have finished. Along with George and Steve the other inaugural inductees were Eddie Burns, who joined Canterbury in their first year and went on to play 221 games for the club from 1935-1950, Les Johns, considered one of the game’s greatest ever Fullbacks who played nine seasons for the Bulldogs from 1963-71 and Terry Lamb, who played 262 games for the Bulldogs over 13 seasons. To commemorate each Hall of Fame inductee the Bulldogs commissioned a local artist to sculpt a bronze bust of each of the players. These busts will be proudly displayed in the League Club, initially in the cabinet adjacent to reception before a more permanent home is established as part of the Club’s renovations. I would invite all Members to visit the Club to see these wonderful sculptures.

Dear Members, On Saturday the 1st August I was privileged to attend the Bulldogs 80th Anniversary Celebration at the Le Montage Function Centre in Lilyfield. With more than 850 guests in attendance including the who’s who of Bulldogs Royalty, this stunning event will be talked about for many years to come and was a credit to the Bulldogs administration led by Canterbury Bankstown Bulldogs Chairman (and Canterbury League Club Director) Ray Dib and CEO Raelene Castle. The highlight of the evening was the launch of the Bulldogs Hall of Fame including the unveiling of its first five inductees. These first five inductees are not just considered five of the greatest Bulldogs players of all time but are widely regarded as five of the greatest players to play the game of rugby league.

On behalf of everyone at Canterbury I congratulate the inaugural Bulldogs Hall of Fame inductees. I look forward to seeing you around the Club.

Dave Brace Chief Executive OfficerL

DEVELOPMENT

WORK TO COMMENCE ON NEW UNDERGROUND CAR PARK CANTERBURY CEO DAVE BRACE INSPECTING THE BASEMENT PRODUCTION KITCHEN

COMPLETED FIRST STAGE OF THE NEW CAFÉ AND THE BASEMENT PRODUCTION KITCHEN

Construction of the basement level kitchens underneath Flame Pizza + Grill and the concrete foundations for the new café are now complete. The main driveway leading into the porte cochere at the front of the Club has been reopened and Members and guests can enjoy the convenience of being easily dropped off at the front entrance of the Club again. The outline of the new café is now visible as it moves onto the next stage of construction – building up the walls to form the shell of the new café area. Construction of the new multi-storey underground car park at the front around the Club’s iconic volcano feature has just commenced with Parkview Group, the successful tenderer for this stage of the project.

04

Excavators will soon begin working in the central garden to make space for 350 extra car spaces which will span over four levels, each with its own parking guidance system and bay indicators for the convenience of our Members and guests. Basement Level 1 of the new car park will also include a brand new cellar storage area as well as a multi-bay loading dock which will make it more accessible for the Club to receive supplies. While the car park construction is taking place, Members will still continue to enjoy unrestricted access to the existing multi-storey car park behind the Club. Aside from works above, a lot of other builds have taken place behind the

scenes including rerouting pipes that supply water to the internal waterfall feature and the fire hydrants on Bridge Road, and installing additional power lines to support the increased infrastructure. You can keep up-to-date with all the latest development news by following our website, Facebook and Twitter pages. Regular updates will also be available in every Journal. SOME OF THE ORGANISATIONS CANTERBURY WILL BE SUPPORTING THIS YEAR

TWO DOZEN ORGANISATIONS ARE BIG WINNERS IN CLUBGRANTS 2015 24 local organisations have just received a very large injection of funds – $298,312 worth of grants to be exact – from Canterbury League Club through the ClubGRANTS program.

Horizon Theatre Company, Wangee Park School, Canterbury Meals on Wheels and Canterbury Hospital.

Each recipient received funding to run specific health and social welfare programs that assist different groups in need within the local community including family support, aged, disability, and early childhood and youth services.

Canterbury Hospital and Canterbury Meals on Wheels received the largest grants this year – $66,065 to purchase a new Holmium Laser to treat renal stones in patients and $47,100 respectively, used to fit out a new kitchen at the Canterbury Meals on Wheels’ Campsie site.

Some of the benefitting organisations include Lakemba Public School, Canterbury Community Child Care Centre,

Canterbury is a passionate supporter of local communities and every year donates over $1 million to various not-

for-profit organisations, charities, schools and sporting groups as well as providing scholarships to young people. In the past year, Canterbury has supported over 120 different groups with vital funding and item donations. “We considered over 150 applicants and the committee chose organisations with projects that address the highest needs in the local area. This year’s projects really aim to improve the lives of their participants and make a difference to the community,” said Dr George Peponis OAM, Chairman of Canterbury League Club.

INTRODUCING

At White Rabbit we exercise our right to be different and brew beer that doesn’t follow the others. We’ve chased down and experimented with some of the best quality ingredients to create our dark ale… A dark ale which is malt driven but with the firm bitterness of whole hop flowers to ensure refreshing balance. It’s subtle yet delicious, with flavour built around yeast that is let loose in our open fermenters. We let the yeast have a party and it likes to play hard! Our dark ale is brewed using these open fermenters, to combine traditional methods with our White Rabbit, new-world thinking. The result is a refreshing beer you will love to drink anytime, anywhere.… but intrigue you with complex flavours and character. 4.9% alc/vol.

The Canterbury League Backgammon Club, founded by Aris in 2010, meets twice a week every Thursday at The Lakemba Club and every Friday at Belfield RSL at 6pm. New members are always welcome and Aris is happy to teach beginners how to play the game. “We currently have 14 members from different backgrounds; we welcome everyone. It doesn’t cost anything to join and at the end of the year we hold a presentation with trophies, prizes and have a lot of fun with our families.”

Aris Patikas, President of the Canterbury League Backgammon Club, was just a 7 year old boy watching his uncles play when he fell in love with the game too.

That was over 70 years ago – his passion for the ancient game of backgammon has not diminished and the sprightly senior can still be seen playing against other club members when they meet up for games and tournaments.

Anyone wishing to join Aris for a game of backgammon can contact him on 0403 000 910.

Gary Tompkins OAM Article • Size: ¼ page Local builder sweeps up Order of Australia Medal Belfield local Gary Tomkins may be retired but that hasn’t stopped him from helping out the widows of Belfield RSL with small household repairs like changing leaky tap washers. His acts of civic mindedness and generous community spirit have earned him an Order of Australia Medal for his services to veterans and their families. A medal presentation ceremony will be held at the historic Government House later in the year. Gary, a retired builder, enjoys doing the odd jobs for the widows and said he was very surprised by the honour. Grandfather to 25 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren, Gary has been a Belfield Club member since 1961 and Belfield Sub-Branch member since 1986. He and his wife, Bev Tomkins, are also life members of Belfield RSL. He has held the position of Belfield RSL President from 1989 to 1992 and currently serves as the Welfare Officer for Belfield Sub-Branch. In his free time Gary enjoys reading, watching rugby league as he is a keen Bulldogs supporter, and likes to do woodworking including making handcrafted wooden pens and intricate clocks.
