CEO’S REPORT The final fitout for the new Bakehouse Café is underway and we are on track to open this fantastic new eatery in the next couple of months. Key Bakehouse staff have been recruited and the chefs team have been busy finalising the mouth-watering new menu. For this Journal we have showcased a small selection of the meals and products available in Bakehouse. Opening for Members from breakfast to late night supper and everything in between, the selection will range from traditional breakfasts and light meals, to healthy options and plenty of freshly baked treats. Bakehouse Café will also be a perfect choice to complete your meal after dining in one of our other restaurants, with qualified Baristas making the finest coffees and a range of desserts available at all times of the day.

Dear Members, It continues to be an incredibly exciting time at Canterbury with the development moving at a rapid pace. The team have done an amazing job of keeping the Club operational at nearly full capacity and even though it may look a little chaotic on the outside, internally it’s business as usual with the same great service and facilities that you have come to expect. The slab for the new level one extension being built over the entrance to the car park has been completed and the majority of the bright yellow temporary support beams in the entrance driveway have been removed, making the driveway entry much wider and easier to navigate.

In May Canterbury was presented with a Highly Commended Award at the ClubsNSW Club and Community Awards for our work assisting local charity Maronites on Mission to feed the homeless in Sydney’s CBD. Each month Canterbury staff volunteer their time to deliver 150 hot meals and healthy snacks to feed the homeless at Woolloomooloo and Martin Place. All the meals are freshly prepared by Canterbury. We were honoured to receive this award which was a testament to our staff’s dedication to giving back to the community. At the 2016 Annual General Meeting the results of the Club’s biannual director elections were announced. Congratulations to the existing Board who were re-elected until 2018. Congratulations also to Dr. George Peponis and Arthur Coorey for being re-appointed President and Vice President by the Board. My team and I look forward to continuing to work closely with the Board to deliver the exciting Canterbury Masterplan for our Members. I look forward to seeing you around the Club.

DEVELOPMENT

A LOOK AT THE NEW BASEMENT LOADING DOCK AS IT IS BEING BUILT

CAFÉ FITOUT STEAMING AHEAD The hoarding in the hallway leading to Flame Pizza + Grill is hiding the final stages as Canterbury begins the countdown to reveal the exciting new Bakehouse Café very soon. Behind the hoardings, MPA contractors are installing new services before adding the finishing touches to the café fitout including installing the interior décor, mood lighting, furniture and kitchen equipment. The wooden bridge heading towards Canterbury Reception has been filled in. This has allowed for the walkway to be expanded as well as opened up the view from the front atrium towards the new café and Flame Pizza + Grill, visually linking one end of Canterbury seamlessly with the other. The Canterbury Chef Team have also been unleashing their creativity, fine-tuning new recipes and perfecting the Bakehouse Café menu ready in time for the big launch coming soon. Please flip to pages 6-7 for a sneak peek of the fresh new menu that is coming your way.

The steel structures for these two areas will be fabricated offsite before being craned in later in the year. The entire façade of that area of the Club will be ready around the same time as the new café. On the west side of the Club, Parkview have completed the roof structure of the new extension and efforts will continue to join the new section to the current building to create the space needed to extend Banyan Brasserie’s outdoor al fresco area and the plant and services areas on Level 1. The Banyan extension will allow for more patrons to be seated, especially during peak hours and school holidays, and the upgraded facilities upstairs will allow floor staff to serve Members and guests more efficiently.

Not as visible as the rest of the other construction but no less important is the work that is being done to construct the basement level loading dock. This large dock has enough space for three large trucks to drive in to deliver their load at the same time and is an integral part of future-proofing Canterbury to handle more redevelopment as the Club grows. You can keep up-to-date with all the latest development news by following our website, Facebook and Twitter pages. Regular updates will also be available in every Journal. CanterburyLeaguesClub @Canterbury_LC

At the same time as the café fitout, MPA is also concurrently building the shell of the cocktail bar and executive offices located directly above the Bakehouse Café. VIEW OF THE NEW WEST SIDE EXTENSION WHICH WILL HOUSE THE NEW PLANT ROOM AND LEVEL 1 LOUNGE EXTENSION

COMMUNITY Dinesh Patel, Surgeon and Head of Urology at Canterbury Hospital. “This surgery is very safe and precise, and there is an extremely high rate of success in clearing stones completely. Operating time is usually around 30-60 minutes and most patients can go home 3-4 hours after their operation. Most patients can return to their normal activities or work within 1-2 days of their surgery.” The machine, used weekly on patients since it was purchased in February, works by using a very slender and flexible scope and a fine laser to break up kidney stones in the urinary tract. Patients then naturally pass the stones or for larger ones, the scope has a small basket that can capture and remove it once the scope is retracted.

LASER MACHINE CUTS WAIT TIME AT CANTERBURY HOSPITAL Anyone who has experienced kidney stones can sympathise with its painful symptoms, however a first-of-its-kind laser machine at Canterbury Hospital has sped up treatment for local patients. CANTERBURY COMMUNITY PROGRAM WINS CLUBSNSW AWARD Canterbury League Club’s community efforts to feed the homeless in the city has been recognised with a Highly Commended award at the ClubsNSW Club and Community Award night. There were fifteen other finalists in the highly contested category of Disability, Welfare & Social Inclusion.

of an ongoing partnership with Canterbury Hospital to support the local community, has helped minimise patients being referred to more distant hospitals and reduced wait times for patients coming in for treatment of their kidney stones. “Previously the hospital had to refer kidney stone cases for treatment out to other hospitals so the laser has made a huge difference to the service we are able to provide the local community,” said Dr

Every month a group of Canterbury staff members, in partnership with local Punchbowl group, Maronites on Mission, hand out approximately 150 hot meals, sandwiches and snacks to homeless people at two different locations in the city – Woolloomooloo Police Station and Martin Place.

“Canterbury has been a proud sponsor of the hospital for a number of years now because the general health and wellbeing of our local community is an important aspect of the Club’s give back program. The hospital can now provide a vital service to their patients in a timely manner, and most importantly, within easy access to people living in the local area,” said Dr George Peponis OAM, Chairman of Canterbury League Club.

“Canterbury is very honoured to receive this award and it is a real testament to our staffs’ dedication to giving back to the community. I’d like to thank all staff who have participated and volunteered their time to make a difference in someone’s life,” said Dr George Peponis OAM, Chairman of Canterbury League Club.

Asides from providing staff volunteers, all the food on the homeless food runs are cooked and prepared by Canterbury chefs just a few short hours beforehand.

SENIOR SHUFFLEBOARD ENCOURAGES COMMUNITY BONDING In a bid to increase senior participation rates in recreational and healthy community activities, a shuffleboard was recently installed at The Lakemba Club for the enjoyment of Members and guests. Shuffleboard enthusiast and Bulldog Legend, Steve Mortimer, has been running tutorials for staff and Members to introduce and teach the finer details of the game. “Unfortunately we tend to become less active the older we get which has a negative effect on our overall health and wellbeing. Shuffleboard is easy to play and is a unique sport that everyone can enjoy while still experiencing the excitement of real sport and teamwork,” said Steve Mortimer OAM, Founder of Steve Mortimer’s Australian Shuffleboard.

to achieve the highest points by gliding pucks down opposite sides of the table into scoring zones. With rules similar to lawn bowls, the game is played at hip-height which makes it comfortable and suitable for people of all ages and physical fitness to enjoy. The Lakemba Club also has its own shuffleboard club called the Lakemba Legends who recently played a friendly shuffleboard competition with Bulldogs players James Graham, Aiden Tolman,

Josh Jackson and David Klemmer. Don’t let their age fool you; there was a twinkle in their eyes as they drew first blood however the Bulldogs proved too strong with their beginners’ luck and eventually won the game 14-1. Anyone who’d like to learn how to play shuffleboard can drop into the Club anytime and ask one of the friendly staff to teach them. The Lakemba Legends also meet every Tuesday afternoon from 1pm to play shuffleboard.

The game of Australian tabletop shuffleboard is very easy to learn – players play against each other and try
