THE YEAR IN REVIEW It is with great pleasure to report that 2014 was an excellent year for your Club. As advised in my annual report to Members last year, a Master Plan Development Application was submitted to Canterbury Council. This application was approved and in October renovations to Canterbury commenced with pre-construction works around Flame Pizza + Grill. The initial construction involved the excavation of the northern wing of the Club and underneath Flame to prepare for future back of house works. A large part of the redevelopment this year will be on the construction of the new five-storey underground car park. This car park will be fitted with a parking guidance system which uses a combination of bay indicators and colour coordinated levels for the added convenience of Members and Guests. Aside from the car park, work is set to commence on the redevelopment of the driveway into the Club, a loading dock and warehouse, a production kitchen and a rubbish removal area. The Club’s front façade will also be upgraded with new outdoor areas for the new Banyan Brasserie, the cocktail bar and the new 24 hour casual restaurant. Development updates are available on our website, Facebook and Twitter pages and the Members’ Journal.

Following the Annual General Meeting in March last year, a number of changes to the membership structure came into effect. Among the changes was the removal of the Associate Membership which was replaced by a single membership type with a lower annual fee. We have also moved from a fixed annual renewal date to renewing each Member’s membership on the date of their joining. These changes ensure that all new Members will receive a full year’s membership upon joining and bring Canterbury’s membership in line with other contemporary clubs and assist the Club in growing its membership numbers. We have already seen the benefit of these initiatives with our membership at record levels and now exceeding 55,000. One of our most significant projects in 2014 was the launch of Engage Rewards into our Sydney clubs. Engage Rewards is Canterbury’s exclusive loyalty program for Members where you can earn points every time you pay, play or dine. These points can then be exchanged for fantastic rewards including purchasing food and beverage at our bars and restaurants, paying your bills via BPay or purchasing a Gift Card for selected retailers from the Pit Stop Machine located on Level 1 at Canterbury. This was followed by the launch of the second phase of the program in December which involved a tiered loyalty component. There are now five different tiers of Engage Rewards, each with their own exclusive features and benefits – Blue Diamond, Platinum, Gold, Silver and Black. For more details, I encourage you to visit our website canterbury.com.au

YEAR IN REVIEW

BULLDOGS PLAYERS READY TO TAKE ON THE RABBITOHS IN THE 2014 NRL GRAND FINAL

Despite a regular season riddled with injuries, the Bulldogs successfully fought their way from seventh position to book their spot in the NRL Grand Final. Unfortunately their efforts fell short of a victory against the Rabbitohs on this occasion. On Game Day, Canterbury was operating at full capacity with over two thousand Members and Guests watching the game on televisions installed throughout the Club. It was fantastic to see hundreds of fans welcome the team back to the Club and show their appreciation for a successful season. On behalf of everyone at Canterbury, I congratulate the Bulldogs on a fantastic year; we are looking forward to the 2015 season and hopefully going one better. Canterbury has always been a proud supporter of the local community and this year was no different. In 2014 we

04

donated $1.2 million to 120 different community and sporting groups (excluding the Bulldogs). Some of the projects we supported in 2014 have included the Miracle Babies Foundation, an after school drop-in room for the local Belmore PCYC and Movember, which saw Canterbury recognised as the highest fundraising team in the Movember Hospitality Industry Challenge. During the year, several changes were made to our food and beverage offering. Flame Pizza + Grill is now open for breakfast on weekends, offering a fantastic selection of breakfast options. If you have not had a chance to check out Flame’s new menus then consider making a booking today. For your convenience, you can now reserve a table at Flame through Dimmi, an online booking system which can be accessed

via the Canterbury website. Canterbury has made serious gains in social media in 2014. Since last year, Canterbury’s Facebook following has significantly increased and we now have over 22,000 fans. On this page, Members have access to the latest information on Club activities, food and beverage specials, promotions and shows. I encourage you to follow the Club if you are on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram and register your email address to receive our electronic newsletter for the most up-todate information. Canterbury has a continuing commitment to providing entertainment for Members and Guests with recent plans to build a larger showroom and entertainment lounge. To ensure that we continue to provide quality entertainment that

is relevant to our Members, the full entertainment program was reviewed for the first time in several years. As a result of this review changes were made to increase the quality and variety of our entertainment offerings. The new shows have been embraced by Members with a number of shows selling out in record time. Early 2014 saw the completion of a six-month renovation of the Lakemba Services Club. Re-branded as The Lakemba Club, Members and Guests visiting the Club have been greeted by exciting new changes including the introduction of a brand new restaurant called Fusion Wok & Grill. Open for lunch and dinner from Tuesday to Sunday, Fusion’s menu combines exotic Asian dishes with traditional Western favourites. We have also recently

launched a Lakemba Club website and a Facebook page for The Lakemba Club to keep Members and Guests informed of the latest entertainment and events, community news and seasonal menu specials from Fusion Wok & Grill. In last year’s report, I advised that Canterbury was proceeding with a proposal for Wyong Rugby League Club to acquire the Bay Sports Club. In October and November, General Meetings were held at Canterbury and Bay Sports to approve the de-amalgamation of the Bay Sports Club. Members supported the proposal and arrangements are now being formalised with Wyong. At the same General Meeting, Members also accepted a proposal to finalise the closure and sale of the Earlwood Ex-Servicemen’s Club and to transfer the remaining gaming machines to The Lakemba Club. It is

expect this process will be finalised this year. To conclude I would like to thank my fellow Directors, Management and Staff for their continued efforts that make Canterbury the wonderful club that it is. To our Members, on behalf of the entire Board I offer my thanks and gratitude for your continued patronage and support.

DEVELOPMENT

DEVELOPMENT TO COMMENCE ON NEW CANTERBURY CAR PARK

STAFF WITH THEIR 25 YEAR SERVICE AWARDS together with Chairman Dr George Peponis

The pre-construction stage of Canterbury’s renovations is well and truly underway with excavations around the new 24 hour café & casual restaurant area and underneath Flame Pizza + Grill. The pre-construction works will lead into the first official stage of construction – the building of the 24 hour café’s concrete shell, internal fitout and external façade. This new café and casual restaurant will serve a range of cook to order meals and will seat approximately 200 people in a mixture of internal, outdoor and lounge seating areas. This same stage of construction will also help prepare the area for future back of house works including the building of a production kitchen to service both Flame and the new function rooms that will be

06

built on Level 1 to replace the existing Blueberry Hill room. At the same time, work on a new fivestorey underground car park will also commence and it is expected to be completed by the end of 2016. “One of the biggest keys to this club’s success is that it has over 1,000 car spots. As we build new areas of the club, we’ll always ensure to increase the capacity of car parking so our Members and Guests can access the club conveniently,” said CEO of Canterbury League Club, Dave Brace. A new elevator and stairs will provide Members and Guests access to all levels of the new car park. The proposed

elevator will give visitors the impression that they are coming out of the volcano water feature, allowing them to better appreciate the Club’s newly landscaped front gardens whilst being delivered to the main front entrance. Importantly the majority of the Club’s existing car park will be unaffected during renovations so Members will continue to have access to car parking at all times during construction. Banyan Brasserie will be upgraded and extended to include a new outdoor alfresco terrace which will seat an additional 150 diners. Parents will be happy to know the fit out of this area will include a new Galaxy kids play area where their children can play and

CAFÉ TRAINING COURSE PROVIDING LIFE SKILLS TO STUDENTS

STUDENTS LEARNING HOW TO MAKE A PERFECT CUP OF COFFEE

Many things go into making the perfect cup of coffee – Canterbury League Club’s donation of $16,991 to Canterbury Vale School’s barista program is helping teach local students important life skills for their future. Under the school’s Hospitality Skills Program, students are given the opportunity to participate in a barista and café training course over a period of three days, following which they receive a recognised, accredited qualification to work in the hospitality industry from a Registered Training Organisation (RTO). Students also have the opportunity to apply their new skills in a real-world situation through scheduled work experience at the school café. The café, set up over 18 months ago, operates on Friday mornings servicing the public, parents, staff and two supporting schools in the Lakemba local area. Participating students are responsible for all facets of the café’s operation – from coffee making and cash handling to baking, stock

maintenance and customer service. The majority of the Canterbury grant was used to employ a hospitality-trained special education teacher to oversee the school’s café and the necessary barista training for the school year. “Benefits of the program include formal qualifications and training for our students, increased engagement and attendance at school, reduced instances of negative behaviours, improved self-confidence and social skills, industry recognised work experience and the ability to engage positively with the wider community,” said Relieving Assistant Principal Michael Bolt. “The Canterbury donation is greatly appreciated and has afforded the school and its students opportunities and work pathways that would otherwise have been unavailable to them.” Established in 2006, Canterbury Vale is a Department of Education and Communications (DEC) specialist behaviour

school which caters for a maximum of 21 students from Years 7 for 10. The school aims to provide an environment in which vulnerable or disadvantaged students can access quality education, whilst being supported to make positive learning choices in order to be reintegrated back into a regular school setting. More than 25 students have participated in the program since its inception and several have continued on to obtain paid work in the hospitality industry. “This program does more than just teach a student how to make a good cup of coffee. It is an invaluable tool to help disadvantaged youth develop vital workplace skills, competencies and confidence for the life challenges ahead,” said Dr George Peponis OAM, Chairman of Canterbury League Club.

Their efforts have proved extremely successful with the garden bearing a number of different plants, fruits and vegetables such as corn, coriander, mint, chilli and parsley. Impressively, this produce has been used to make meals for the entire day care group on several occasions.

The Tripoli and Mena Association is a non-profit community-based organisation aiming to enhance the capacity of the Arabic-speaking community to participate in Australian society. Established in 1975 by a group of young Arabic-speaking migrants, the organisation offers the community several services including child care, mothers’ support groups and an Arabic language program.

Canterbury’s donation ensures the association’s seniors have the appropriate resources to improve the sustainability of the garden, and therefore continue to reap Canterbury League Club’s donation of the benefits from their participation in this $2,500 to the Tripoli and Mena Association’s project. It is hoped that the donation will encourage the senior citizens to continue in their endeavours,” said Dr George Peponis OAM, Chairman of Canterbury League Club.

FINAL MOVEMBER TALLY year is an amazing achievement and it was fantastic to see staff embrace Movember wholeheartedly. Everyone really got into the spirit of it – there were some amazing moustaches around the Club, all helping raise awareness for men’s health,” said Brace.
