Kelsee Green and Darren Pereira Cross Country Captains Training was conducted throughout Semester 1, three mornings a week. Despite the early mornings, training was attended by many keen and willing athletes. Thanks to Mr Ian Lees, Mr Peter Gagen and Mr David Howells for their dedication and ongoing support throughout the season. The squad enjoyed involvement within numerous avenues, including the Representative Pathway, TAS Championships and Canterbury’s own Invitational Cross Country. The Middle School and Senior School Interhouse Cross Country Carnival once again proved to be a great success, with high numbers of willing participants and quality running at the front of the pack. OVERALL PLACES: 1st Ramsey; 2nd Becket; 3rd Temple; 4th Cranmer In Term 2, more than 250 keen students attacked the 1.5km looped course at the annual running of the Canterbury College Invitational Cross Country Carnival. Schools from Toowoomba, the Gold Coast and the local area were all in attendance, along with a strong contingent of Canterbury College Junior and Senior runners. Grace Hamilton (Year 5)
and Jack Humrich (Year 5) showed their talents by placing in the Under 13 age group races, several years above their current age. Congratulations to Tianah List and Jayne Russell for winning their respective races; a fine effort amongst strong opposition. The major highlight for the combined boys and girls Cross Country Team was the 2013 TAS Cross Country Championships. On the back of a solid training effort, along with many students being fit from other sports, the College held high hopes for a top five TAS Blue Division finish. On a fast and challenging course, the team competed with distinction and courage. The girls emerged with an outstanding overall Second placing, whilst the boys finished Sixth. Congratulations to Jayne Russell and Caitlin McQuilkin-Bell who each claimed First and were crowned TAS Cross Country Champions. After outstanding runs at the District Cross Country Championships, 20 Canterbury College students qualified to attend the South Coast Cross Country Championships. This carnival is traditionally very strong, with the top six progressing to the prestigious Queensland Championships. Congratulations to Caitlin McQuilkin-Bell, Emily Finch, Tianah List and Darren Pereira for claiming top six places and earning their spot for competition at the State Championships and to Jayne Russell who was named a reserve for this event. At the State Championships, Emily placed Seventh, Caitlin 12th and Tianah 12th within their age groups, which is an outstanding achievement for the girls. As departing Cross Country Captains, we wish the 2014 Cross Country Squad all the best, as they build upon the great foundation that has been laid over the past few years. We are confident that with the strong JTAS program in place, the future is very bright for the Senior Cross Country program at Canterbury College.
