Head of College Message

It has been a very productive year for Canterbury College in 2014, including further developments in technology and many achievements for our students.

Dear Members of the Canterbury College Family, Canterbury’s young sportsmen and women have shown their strength, receiving many accolades this year. Our Junior athletes were awarded Beenleigh District Cross Country Champions, JTAS Cross Country Champions and JTAS Athletics Champions for the second consecutive year, which is an outstanding achievement. Our Senior swimmers brought home twenty-five medals from the South Coast Regional Swimming Championships held at the Miami Pool (Gold Coast) in March.

In the Arts, our Cantabile Choir was awarded three First Place awards and Best Performance of an Australian Composition at the prestigious Australian National Eisteddfod in Canberra. The Choir was awarded Platinum at the MusicFest Competition, where our Symphonic Band also gained a Platinum Award. These are rarely awarded and are reserved for near-perfect performances.

The Annual Excellence Awards ceremony was a fitting end to the year as we celebrated our students’ successes in Academics, Arts, Sport and Culture. Congratulations to all awardees and thank you to the staff and parents who offered great support to the event.

The My Student Account software was introduced, meaning Canterbury College is now a cashless campus.

The system includes all students and staff for the canteen, retail centre, photocopying and other activities that have previously involved handling cash.

Canterbury College has introduced a Bring Your Own Technology (BYOT) Program so students may bring a

device to class that they have at home. The program follows a specific set of guidelines devised by the College and pertains to a prepared list of recommended devices that meet minimum required specifications.

The phased introduction of this program included Years 4, 7 and 10. Conversations with our students were closely aligned to monitoring the expansion of the program to include our Year 11 and 12 students. In 2015, all students from Years 4-12 will be able to join the program and this enables them to bring their own device to assist and enhance their learning.

Starry Starry Night, our Family Fun Night and the event of the season, was an outstanding success with more than 600 members of our College family attending. The younger members of our College wore face paint, took outlandish photos in the photo booth, jumped high in the jumping castle and generally enjoyed plenty of fun and laughter. The many stage performances were a credit to our students who willingly performed in front of their families, friends and the wider community. It was a wonderful night of celebration that brought the Canterbury community together.

As another year concludes, I would like to thank the Canterbury College community for what has been achieved and I look forward to an even more successful 2015.

On behalf of the Board of Canterbury College I am honoured and privileged to welcome you to our 2014 Annual Excellence Awards Evening.

I am particularly pleased to welcome Archbishop Philip Aspinall as our Guest Speaker this evening and look forward to another of his inspirational and informative addresses to our School Family in support of our Mission Vision and Values.

When attending last week’s K-2 Celebration Evening, our Head of College described the unique facilities that we offer at Canterbury College for the benefit of our Students and it was abundantly clear from my observations that in our early years of Canterbury College the foundation is laid for a caring and nurturing engaging space where our youngest learners begin their learning journey in a safe and encouraging environment hand in hand.

Our Junior School continues to instill a love of learning and a sense of individuality and self respect that will last a lifetime before our students progress through Middle School and into their Senior years.

No matter how well our facilities on campus are enhanced, it is most important and pleasing that what happens in the classroom is paramount and that our students continue to be educated by a team of highly committed, professional and inspirational staff dedicated to working with parents to provide each student with the best education possible.

I thank all of our parents for entrusting your child’s education to Canterbury College and I hope that you will continue to invest in your child’s education here.

As you would no doubt be aware, our 2015 Budget has been finalised despite uncertainty as to future costs to be met. It is with this in mind that the Board is trialling a new marketing opportunity being offered through School Places to help optimise our revenue by attracting potential students through technology to fill our limited vacant places, subject to important protocols. Generating funds to run our College is a difficult task, but with additional marginal revenue raised, our College can continue to implement existing and innovative programs, buy new equipment, improve facilities and most importantly reduce the rate of future school fee increases.

Director of Business and Finance for prudent, responsible financial planning to ensure that the College provides and continues to provide in the future our valued education programs and facilities for your investment in a Canterbury College education.

The College exists in an ever increasing and competitive education marketplace. However, through the outstanding professionalism and educational leadership of our Head of College, Mrs Donna Anderson, Canterbury College is extending its good reputation well beyond Logan City into neighbouring countries such as Indonesia, Thailand and China. The College’s reputation and brand integrity is well respected internationally and this is a credit to our Head of College and her vision for this College into the future. We thank you for all of your untiring work in this regard Mrs Anderson.

Our building program has seen the completion of new Year 7 classrooms and the transformation of our early learning centre precinct playground, as well as the refurbishment of the Senior Library and Undercroft.

It is extremely gratifying to hear students expressing appreciation for the additional resources provided to them over their educational journey at Canterbury College.

We sincerely thank the P&F Management Committee and all of the voluntary supporters for their building of community spirit in the past year and I wish the newly elected 2015 Management Committee, again under the leadership of President Sue Pugin, all the very best for their efforts in the forthcoming year. Their efforts and those of various support groups in the College not only build community spirit but also fundraise for improvements to student facilities, either generally or within the special needs of those supporter groups.

Good governance and risk management, particularly in the area of providing a safe and encouraging environment, are essential for our separately incorporated not-forprofit organisation and for all of our current and future stakeholders. I sincerely thank all of my fellow Directors Jonathan Waterworth, who is Deputy Chair, Bob Lang, who chairs the Building and Grounds Committee, Professor Joy Cumming, Rhonda Dore and Reverend Keren Terpstra for their continuing support, service and commitment to our College. Their time and wisdom is provided voluntarily and the College is forever indebted to the present and past Governors for their strategic direction in harmonious partnership with the Head of College.

Head of College Report It has been a successful year, with everyone working individually and together to achieve such positive outcomes.

Special thanks to the College Leadership Team Mrs Jenny George, Dean of Junior School, Mr Damien Coleman, Dean of Middle School, Mr Tony Nutt, Dean of Senior School and Mr Paul Pickering, Director of Business and Finance. Also to Mrs Ann Jones, my Personal Assistant. I thank the Senior Leadership Team for their wisdom, enthusiasm and support. Mr Coleman leaves us at the end of the year to pursue further advanced study. We thank him for his time and wish him future success.

We acknowledge those who have served the College for a number of years. They have had a belief in the education that is delivered here and have strived to make it better for our students.

Our Board of Directors, under the Chairmanship of Mr Jeff Thomas, assists in ensuring the strategic direction of Canterbury College is implemented in accordance with the Vision, Mission and Ethos. Mr Thomas always offers support, care and discernment when issues arise. I thank him personally, together with our other dedicated Board Members.

We thank Ms Sue Pugin, President of the Parents and Friends Association, and Committee Members and Supporter Groups for their tireless work for the students of the College.

Canterbury College has had many notable achievements throughout 2014. Our NAPLAN results are at or above National and State means, and 99 per cent of our eligible Year 12’s received a Tertiary offer.

Our students received Australian Vocational Student Prizes and University Entrance Financial Scholarships.

We excelled in our cultural and sporting awards, with continual development in our facilities development.

I would like to acknowledge the legacy our staff and students will leave in this year, 2014. In particular, I refer to Reverend Elroy Mee who retires this year after 10 years of service as Chaplain to Canterbury College.

We thank her most sincerely for her work as a priest, colleague and personal friend to many.

We are an independent school with an Anglican Ethos.

These are small words but their impact is immense and pervading. The Ethos and Values drive our College culture as does the curriculum and quality of the teaching.

The College takes great pride in its Anglican heritage and we have been privileged to witness the fostering of the development of the Anglican Ethos in a wide variety of settings at Canterbury College.

Reverend Mee has been a significant driver on this journey.

The College’s educational philosophy flows from the Mission Statement. This expresses our ideals, values, aspirations and relationship with our community. We develop goals and objectives and our achievement of outcomes determines our success.

To have an Anglican Ethos entwined in this is complex.

There are roots in the past which shape our future and influence our beliefs and values. The Anglican Ethos is part of our identity 27 years after the foundation of the College. Canterbury is still committed to nurturing and embedding this ethos in a credible way in day-to-day activities.

The ethos is a gift to the school and is kept alive in the context of changing times and culture. The function of a Chaplaincy must ultimately revolve around teaching the story creatively and effectively. The Chaplain’s work in a school differs from a parish ministry in that the belief conformity is not a condition of membership of the community.

Our College serves the community at large and engages them through innovative, creative and formal learning approaches. Social researchers state that youth need connectedness and belonging and they seek to find meaning in their lives.

Through the function of Chaplaincy, students are able to clarify their own identity. Students acquire not just academic skills but the development of character.

Students need to be empowered to clarify their own thoughts and actions according to a moral compass.

CANTERBURY COLLEGE

The position of Chaplaincy is one of astuteness and a great deal of resourcefulness. Sometimes it is more effective to hold back and wait for the best ways to have students discover the truth for themselves.

Reverend Mee was on the original committee to develop our Charter of Values and Code of Conduct which are displayed in every room in the College.

We are more than a Christian School. In a time of disconnect between institutional church and community, the Ethos is well embedded in our way of life at Canterbury. The students, staff and parents speak highly of the feel and atmosphere of our College which is directly related to this.

Our students have a diversity of racial and cultural backgrounds. As they take their place in the world, we hope that their education has given them a sense of social justice for all peoples. Our Innovations program has concentrated on local and global issues. This year, we had our first official pilgrimage to Vanuatu led by Mrs Deanne Hamilton, students and the Anglican Board of Mission.

The 21st century world is connected globally and we also want our leadership connected globally.

We were also one of several Australian schools who tendered to Austrade for the development of the first Australia/Thailand sister school relationship. We won the tender and were invited by the Australian Embassy to sign the Memorandum of Understanding in April this year.

Our students’ faith and spiritual development and the quality of our student-staff relationships show evidence of respect for all.

We continue to keep the ethos alive with Baptisms, Marriages and Funerals in our Chapel.

Our academic skills are accompanied by the emphasis on tradition, sound Scriptural teachings and Sacramental Worship and reason. Faith formation is central to the College Mission.

Meaningful experiences have been created and coordinated for quietness and reflection and meditative times, and provided many opportunities to appreciate and enjoy the natural environment.

The legacy left to Canterbury is bountiful. Two small words, Anglican Ethos, have gone from strength to strength with her direction and influence. We will continue to seek our Anglican identity and Reverend Elroy Mee has been part of our journey. In this place and in this time, she has been right for here. We as a community give thanks for her presence for 10 years.

By embedding this ethos, all are better prepared and stronger to meet the Mission of Canterbury College which is to serve God by preparing people in an inclusive learning community to deal effectively and responsibly with the joys and challenges of their individual lives.

Our Vision continues, which is to inspire people to achieve their personal, social and educational goals by providing the best affordable education in an environment that nurtures and promotes selfawareness and growth based on strong Christian values.

We have had a most successful 2014.

There has been the development of a Religious Education program from Kindergarten to Year 12. The framework developed by Reverend Mee has been used as an exemplar for Anglican Schools in Queensland.

The Chaplain has supported and advised staff on the integration of aspects of faith and spiritual literacy into their day-to-day teaching and class activities. She has been a Christian presence and witness in the College

Senior School Parent It is hard to imagine that our son’s time at Canterbury has ended. I wanted to pass on a few acknowledgements if you will indulge me. You spoke about the legacy that teachers leave behind at the Annual Excellence Awards. I can say with certainty that several teachers throughout his time at Canterbury have left a legacy.

The foundation for him was laid throughout that first year and I cannot express in words how thankful I am for the fantastic start to Canterbury life he had. His teacher understood him from the very first day and nurtured the entire class. Some of the friendships he made that year are still in place today. This was and always will be one of the highlights of his time at Canterbury.

Again, words cannot express my gratitude for his teacher’s unwavering support. So many others have all played a part in developing him into the young man he is today. Each and every teacher has left a mark on him which he will always remember.

You talk about working in partnership and this has certainly been evident throughout the years. As with every partnership, there have been times were we haven’t always agreed but at those times issues were always dealt with in an inclusive manner and outcomes always based on what was best for our son.

So I can definitely say with confidence that he is better prepared and stronger after his time at Canterbury.

Canterbury College Parent A quick email to say thank you very much for your excellent teaching and your encouragement of our daughter. She has done very well this year with your guidance. We are very proud of her. Thank you again.

Junior School Parent One of the Dean’s questions has lingered with me, “What are some of the positives for the year?”

Naturally, there have been a few but the one that I did feel compelled to mention was my daughter’s teacher.

I cannot commend you enough on procuring such a talented, enthusiastic professional.

She has the rare ability to beautifully balance compassion and discipline, providing her class with a stable, safe, enthusiastic environment. She has inspired a joy of learning and has brought out the very best in her pupils throughout the year.

I can only hope that our daughter is fortunate enough to find herself a member of one of her classes in the future, thank you.

Local Business Representative We visited your College’s Open Day and would like to send a special thank you to the two students who showed us around the campus. The wealth of knowledge these two girls had about the College was impeccable, and the passion and enthusiasm they have for Canterbury College was incredible.

We attended your College’s Open Day to ensure we can give feedback to our house buyers in the area and Canterbury College has an immense amount of pristine qualities we are now able to share first-hand.

Senior School Parent Just a quick email to say how impressed we were with the teachers who led the Ski Trip to New Zealand and how grateful we were for all their efforts.

Faced with Mt Hutt being closed for two days, they certainly went above and beyond to reorganise accommodation, ski tickets etc. whilst dealing with all those disappointed students.

The Ski Trip will undoubtedly be one of the highlights of our daughter’s Senior year. Their efforts should be commended.

Senior School Parent I am writing to express our deepest gratitude for the wonderful assistance provided by the College and staff members to our family during this year. It has been an extremely difficult time for us as a family but the generosity and “extra mile” care shown to us during that time certainly has helped to lighten our load.

Our child may never love the academic side of school, but he is very sports focused. Having teachers who understand how he works and want to teach him in the world he learns and lives in is what it is all about.

Our special thanks go to those who helped with their continued advice and support for our son’s ongoing achievements in Year 12 this year both at school and beyond, to our son’s teachers for their support and perseverance enabling him to successfully complete his subjects and to the Inclusive Education staff for their time and effort in ensuring he was provided with a safe environment at school.

Junior School Parent I would like to thank you for a wonderful year my son has had with his teacher.

We also would like to acknowledge the help and assistance provided by other staff in relation to our younger son. My sincere thanks for their untiring efforts in trying to help him settle back into Canterbury College.

Our association with Canterbury College over the years has always been one of delight as we have dealt with so many wonderful members of staff in all areas. We are grateful to the College for their dedication in providing such a high standard of education for our children.

It has been so reassuring to know that even at the toughest times you were able to find a work-around to assist our child. This year has been a big learning curve for us. The strength and commitment you have shown in continuing to help and support our son has been amazing.

Your constant communication in regards to his daily efforts and support in regards to his homework and being flexible with what he produces while we trialled the reading intervention program has been helpful to us.

St Columban’s Basketball Coach I coach the St Columban’s College B Basketball team which played your College on Saturday. I would like to compliment your B team and their coach on the extreme sportsmanship they showed. I have a player who has a disability and your team went out of their way to help him in his attempt to score.

Despite all attempts failing, your team allowed him to shoot without attempting to block him. It was the happiest I have seen him on the court. The boys played with respect and dignity and we all could see that your spectators, along with ours, were hoping that he scored.

You and your College should be extremely proud of the way this team represents both themselves as young men and also your College.

After the game, one of your students went out of their way to again shake hands with him and congratulate him on his efforts. If I take one memory away from this season as coach, it will be this game and the true meaning of sportsmanship and good will to all men.

I still continue to tell others in the wider community and support network of the comment you told me at our Term 3 interview of when the entire class was walking back to class.

Strategic Goal: Anglican Ethos, Values and Service Canterbury College’s Anglican Ethos The Anglican Ethos, and all it encompasses about our Christian faith, is expressed in many ways, and put into practice every day at Canterbury College.

Key examples of this in 2014: • The Charter of Values and Code of Conduct posters displayed in every room.

• The Spiritual Development (SD) course that is constantly being revised and covers all year levels. It is now available in eBook format.

• Daily Bible readings and prayers, and special blessings for sporting and cultural events.

• Regular worship provided through year level Chapels, staff Chapels and Eucharists.

• Special Chapels to mark the stages in our students’ development, such as the Year 6 Celebration and the Year 12 Valedictory Eucharist.

Hoyte from St Mark’s Daisy Hill and representatives from Anglicare agencies at various College events.

• Maintaining a close relationship with the Mother Church through attendance at services at St John’s Cathedral in Brisbane, the Queensland Anglican Schools’ Biennial Conference at Coolum, the ASA Conference in Perth, Professional Development days at St Francis’ College, the Byam Roberts Community days, and ASC Network meetings. Mrs Deanne Hamilton presented at the ASA Conference and at ASC Network meetings.

• Involvement in the wider Church by making our Spiritual Development books available to other Anglican schools and providing ongoing support for their staff, and by developing a heart for Service to those in need within the College community, in the local area and overseas.

• The presence of our Southern Region Bishop, The Right Reverend Alison Taylor, at our annual Confirmation Service.

• Supporting Anglican care agencies and appeals, such as TRACC Logan, In-SYNC in Beenleigh, St Mark’s Christmas Appeal, the Archbishop’s Appeals and the Anglican Board of Mission (ABM). Canterbury also supports the Blue Care Bethania Haven Aged Care Facility, as well as countless charities and welfare agencies as chosen by the community.

• Opportunities for reflection on beliefs and values in Chapels, Retreats, the Bush Chapel and SD lessons.

• Providing pastoral and spiritual care for the whole community through our Chaplain, Reverend Mee.

• Our annual Confirmation Service in which students are Baptised, Admitted to Communion or Confirmed.

• The Retreat program for Years 6-12.

• Chaplain’s Chats in the weekly Canterbury newsletter.

• Our focus on Scholarship which is a key value from our Charter.

• Development of community life through many College events such as Ash Wednesday, Easter, End of Term, Foundation Day and Valedictory Chapels; ANZAC Day and Spirit Assemblies. Canterbury also nurtures community life through the exceptional care given to our College families, especially in times of stress and sorrow.

• Recognising, respecting and valuing diversity in all its forms.

• Developing relationships within and outside the College through our involvement in service activities, participation in the annual TAS Ecumenical Service and sporting competitions, and the presence of the Mayor of Logan, the local Federal MP, Reverend Geoff

Worship Worship at Canterbury is truly the work of the people, with students and staff from all parts of the College contributing their time and talents to make it meaningful and engaging. In the year level Chapels from Kindergarten to Year 12, we enjoyed many new songs and were challenged by the messages chosen by the Middle and Senior School students who used video clips and popular songs to illustrate their messages effectively. The way the students identified the truths from the Bible in the song lyrics and related them to their own lives was impressive indeed.

In Term 1, Mr David Howells, Mr Rob Nolte, Reverend Mee and our Junior School representatives attended the Annual Ecumenical Service to mark the beginning of the TAS sporting competition. This is always a lovely service, with all the participating schools giving thanks

Strategic Goal: Anglican Ethos, Values and Service for the gift of sport, the dedication of their coaches and the thrill of competing. Our students were a great credit to our College. They carried our banner with pride and took an active part in the service.

As always, we began the season of Lent with our Ash Wednesday Chapel. This was a quiet, serious service as we meditated on Jesus’ temptation in the wilderness and the vital questions he had to face concerning his identity and his use of power. We asked God’s forgiveness for the times when we forgot that we are his children and used our powers for our own selfish purposes. Although the students panicked at the thought of giving up McDonald’s, Facebook or video games for Lent, they did agree with the need to bless other people through our annual Easter Egg collection.

Foundation Day Chapel Service One of the most important Chapels was held on Foundation Day. This year, for the first time, the Chapel was held in the morning so that all students could attend. It was lovely to see many parents joining us to give thanks for the founders of our College and for all who have worked so hard not only to realise their vision for a Christian college of excellence, but also to go far beyond what they could have imagined. Our theme was a very popular one namely, Super Heroes. Our Year 2 students helped us to sing Jesus is my Super Hero and our Middle School Girls’ Chorale and Cantabile blessed us with their beautiful singing.

The most vibrant Chapel was, undoubtedly, the Carols@Canterbury evening of merry-making, with hundreds of family members, many Junior School children with GloStix and battery candles, beautiful Prep students dressed up for the nativity scene, fantastic singing led by our Junior Choir and Junior Singers, and Santa – always the star of the night. The loudest, most energetic service was the End of Year Chapel, when the whole College sang with great gusto, and gave the most amazing “Christmas Shout” of thanks to God for the coming of the Christ child on Christmas morning.

BLAST stands for Building Lives Around Spiritual Truths and therefore the scriptures formed the foundation of our time together. The key messages centred on the Biblical truths that everything is spiritual, including our minds and bodies, our choices and our values, and that Jesus came to us so that we “may have life, and have it abundantly” (John 10:10 RSV).

The Retreats continued in Terms 3 and 4, with the Year 10 students focusing on the important issue of friendship in this age of social networking. The Year 11 students focused on the Christian concept of “Servant Leadership”, and the Year 12 students focused on the mixture of excitement and anxiety they were likely to experience as they prepared to leave the familiarity and security of school. The assurance of the Lord that he would be with them always provided the encouragement they needed to move on.

Service During Lent, we collected a huge number of chocolate Easter bunnies, bilbies and chickens to support the ministry of local Anglican agencies, TRACC Logan, InSYNC Beenleigh and the Blue Care Bethania Haven Aged Care Facility. Our hope was that the foster children and the families who care for them, the young homeless people who are desperate for help, and the Bethania Haven residents would know that we were thinking of them with love and that they would share the joy of Easter with us. We handed over our gifts to the representatives of these agencies at our Easter Chapel and we were very moved by their words of thanks.

In Term 4, our focus was on the Great Stamp Collection that supports the vital work done by ABM, and on the annual Christmas Food and Gift Appeal that brings Christmas joy to hundreds of local families. If serving others is a gauge of the Christian heart of a community, then the ongoing compassion and generosity of our staff and families towards those whose lives are very hard is cause for great thanksgiving.

Retreats In Term 2, our Year Level Retreat program began with Years 6 to 9 enjoying all the games, challenges, worship and barbeques that are always part of their BLAST Days.

Strategic Goal: Leadership, Management and Governance Staff Professional Development During 2014, staff members attended a range of courses in various areas to gain further knowledge and skills. The information gained is passed back to staff in meetings and written reports so other staff members can use the ideas, strategies and resources.

This is important to ensure we have teachers using best practice and the latest research when teaching our students and that all staff members are up-todate in their areas of expertise. It is encouraging to see the positive results this has produced in affording our teachers the opportunity to maintain their very high standards of pedagogy.

A large portion of professional development is undertaken after school on or weekends, rather than through the day, exemplifying the commitment our staff members have to producing excellent student outcomes. Literacy and numeracy across the curriculum were focus areas in 2014 with many teachers up-skilling in these very important areas.

Strategic Goal: Leadership, Management and Governance Grants • Export Development Grant Austrade was pleased to advise that our 201213 grant year application for an Export Market Development Grant (EMDG) has been approved.

• Alignment in the Early Years of Schooling Application The focus will be the alignment of curriculum from Kindergarten to Year 1 with the teachers’ pedagogy to support effective implementation within the classroom so there is a differentiated enriched curriculum that supports student needs and development. We have been successful in our grant application for the project Aligning Curriculum and Pedagogy Kindergarten-Year 2 for $3800.

• ANZAC Centenary Grants Program Canterbury College received a letter from the Senator The Honourable Michael Ronaldson, Minister for Veterans’ Affairs stating that the College has been successful through the Federal Government’s ANZAC Centenary Local Grants Program. We have secured funding to construct a World War I Cenotaph and Memorial Garden under the large Moreton Bay Fig Tree in the centre of the College grounds. A few years ago Canterbury College students built and erected a white picket fence around the large Fig Tree, estimated to be 100 years old in 2015, to preserve its history with anticipation of a future Cenotaph within the fenced precinct.

The design includes a sandstone cenotaph, flagpole, seating and memorial walk, whilst bringing together the features of water and plants from both Australia and New Zealand.

The College is committed to ensuring our young people recognise and remember the significant contribution that our servicemen and women have made to Australia, particularly those ANZACs who served in World War I. To ensure Canterbury College continues in its commitment to the community and in educating students about Australian history, the College has long planned for an opportunity to construct a permanent war memorial. This memorial

will act as a constant reminder of the significant sacrifice many men and women made during times of conflict, focusing on the First World War. The project that has been proposed is to occupy an area which is both in a central position in the College grounds and suitable for the wider community to access. The College received $39,378.

• National School Chaplaincy Program Canterbury College receives $20,000 per year for this funding. The program supports the Government’s Students First Policy. Under the Students First approach, the Coalition Government is working with the states and territories to focus on four key areas in order to make a real difference for students. They are improving teacher quality, increasing school autonomy, engaging parents in education and strengthening the curriculum.

• Good to Great: School Leaders Mentoring Highly Accomplished and Lead Teachers The College received $4000 for teacher release and resource costs associated with school-based professional learning workshops and meetings for school leaders and mentees. Funds were apportioned for the implementation of mentoring in the College.

• Mentoring Early Career Teachers The College was successful in our application to Independent Schools Queensland to participate in the Mentoring Early Career Teachers Project. The College received $8000 for this project.

Funds were provided for teacher release for the project leader and lead mentor to attend professional development and reporting forums in 2014 and 2015. This also covers resource costs associated with school based professional learning workshops for school mentors. Funds were apportioned for the implementation of mentoring in the College.

• Independent Schools Queensland Great Teachers = Great Results The College has submitted an Action Plan for the Great Teachers = Great Results Grant. The Queensland Government initiative aims to lift the professional standards of teachers and provide

schools with greater autonomy to suit the needs of their students and communities. Non-state schools will have to demonstrate that they have systems in place to provide feedback to all teachers on performance and that they identify and reward high performing teachers. They also must deploy teachers to where they are needed most. Schools will determine within the policy objectives of Great Teachers = Great Results how they invest funds received through this initiative to improve teacher performance and development.

The grant offers strategic services that are whole-school focused, including assistance with development, alignment and evaluation of programs and initiatives designed to enhance quality teaching. It also offers ongoing coaching and support for school leaders/teams and access to relevant online or face-to-face professional learning.

Services for school leaders and/or their leadership team are also provided, including school based action research into improving teacher performance, establishing professional learning communities, teacher and school leader observation, feedback and mentoring.

Professional learning about attracting, retaining and acknowledging high performers, leading effective reviews and performance conversations, inspiring, developing, sustaining and evaluating high performance and continuous improvement cycles for teaching and learning is also a focus.

• Parliament and Civics Education Rebate The College was advised that our application for the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate (PACER) was successful for the 2014 National Capital excursion. On completion of the excursion within the guidelines stated, the College received $60 per eligible student.

• The Logan City Council Community Benefit Fund The Canterbury College Music Supporters’ Group received $4000 from the Mayor’s and Councillors’ Community Benefit Fund which assisted in the purchase of a Portable Sound System.

• ISQ Kindergarten-Year 1 Alignment Project Canterbury College’s involvement in the Independent Schools Queensland (ISQ) K-1 Alignment project gave staff the opportunity to review practices and beliefs about the Early Years.

Teachers involved included Miss Brittany Taylor (Kindergarten), Mrs Nicole Miller (Prep), Mrs Tammi Cooper (Year 1) and Mrs Leanne Lyle (Director of Curriculum, Kindergarten-Year 6).

The College’s Early Years Philosophy was revisited and reviewed to examine whether it is reflective of best practice in teaching and learning in Kindergarten-Year 1. Creating an updated Early Years Philosophy enabled teachers to have a foundation to refer to and to base decisions on how to best educate their students. The Philosophy also encourages meaningful, authentic and connected literacy learning.

With the focus being on the First Steps approach and model, teaching practices and planning of intentional learning scenarios were able to be aligned with promoting literacy and literacy learning.

The College’s Alignment Project developed into several mini projects. The original plan was to create an Early Years Philosophy for Literacy.

From that, teachers: • created an Early Years educational philosophy • reviewed the Kindergarten Curriculum and balanced it with EYLF • discussed the role of play in literacy • began “Let’s Decode” (phonemic awareness program) • discussed the place of intentional teaching in the Early Years • streamlined guided reading – to teach explicit reading strategies • created scope for high frequency words • decided that an Early Years meeting (for teachers Kindergarten-Year 1) should be held on a regular basis.

Strategic Goal: Leadership, Management and Governance • ISQ Kindergarten-Year 1 Alignment Project (continued) The most valuable outcome of this project was the opportunity to have Early Years teachers discuss their beliefs and practices that support early childhood education. Teachers felt supported and reassured that what they believe about teaching and learning in the Early Years was shared.

It was also discovered that amongst Canterbury staff there was a wealth of knowledge and experience.

The opportunity to access this will be provided in the future in order for teachers to successfully cater to their students in the Early Years and to provide the richest environment for students to acquire early literacy skills.

Staff Achievements, Activities and Projects Staff Wellbeing Program The Wellbeing program at Canterbury College has continually evolved this year. The number of activities available increased including the opportunities for staff to set individual goals.

Staff Participation More than 100 staff members participated in one or more of the activities available. Canterbury College takes the philosophy and practice of wellbeing to a completely new level. Mrs Donna Anderson, Head of College has worked closely with Mr Anthony Hillier, Coordinator of Staff and Student Wellbeing and Ms Michelle Sams, Guidance Counsellor and Wellbeing Support Officer, developing the program.

Bridge to Brisbane Canterbury College was well represented in the Bridge to Brisbane with 22 staff members completing either the 5 km or 10 km event.

Mooloolaba Triathalon The highlight of 2014 for the Staff Wellbeing Program was the Middle School Canterbury College triathlon team winning the mixed corporate Mooloolaba Triathlon. Three staff teams participated, one from each of the College’s sub-schools. The Junior School was represented by Mr Elliot Roberts, Ms Clare Horwood and Mr Nick Ackers. The Middle School team included Mr Anthony Hillier, Mr Nick Medcalf and Miss Kathy Simpson. The Senior School team included Mr Greg Wilkinson, Mr Ian Lees and Mrs Rosie Powell.

Feedback Surveys, interviews, group discussions, data analysis and electronic feedback were all used as a means to gauge the success of the various events and services offered.

The fitness level of staff has increased, staff have now been encouraged to think about their own wellbeing and make adjustments to their lives to enhance wellness and wellbeing, staff absences have decreased and staff connectedness and morale has increased.

Lighthouse School Canterbury College has been acknowledged for its Staff Wellbeing Program and was one of the few schools awarded the title of ‘”Lighthouse School”. In 2013 and 2014, Canterbury again aligned with Independent Schools Queensland, teaching and supporting other schools and colleges to develop their programs.

Activities The Staff Wellbeing Program has offered yoga, boot camp, woodworking, personal counseling, walking groups, kindness cards, candle making, zumba, massages, fitness club, breakfasts, lunches and staff dinners. Community events are a key feature of the program and included the 10,000 Steps Challenge, World’s Greatest Shave, Gold Coast running events, Bridge to Brisbane, Movember and the Mooloolaba Triathlon.

Other Achievements, Awards and Competitions Lions Youth of the Year Canterbury College Vice Captain Jessica Bohan (Year 12) demonstrated that she is a young woman of high moral character and great tenacity when she represented Canterbury College in the Lions Youth of the Year Competition. After winning two prior District Finals, she competed at Tweed Heads in late March in the third District Final before the State Final.

Dance Company Success Canterbury College Dance Company students from Years 7-12 won First place in the Brisbane Performing Arts Challenge (BPAC). BPAC is a dynamic amateur performance competition in Queensland, bringing the top professionals in the industry to judge and work with groups and attracting the best performers and schools from across the state.

The competition was close, with five finalists from a range of colleges. Jessica presented with eloquence on her chosen topic, “Community Service by Youth”. She also answered two-minute, impromptu questions about issues associated with the Malaysian airlines search and whether it is ever appropriate to go through a red light.

Jessica did extremely well and treated others with grace and good will.

The Dance Company also received Honours for each category they competed in at the Gold Coast Eisteddfod in August. The group competed in four categories: Musical Theatre, Hip Hop/Funk, Jazz and Contemporary. The students also received a Highly Commended for their Contemporary routine.

Prefect Sarah Corbet (Year 12) also competed in the competition and won the Public Speaking Award at the Club Final.

National Oboe Champion Brooke Hitchmough (Year 10) won the National Junior Oboe Championship title. The 2014 Yamaha National Band Championships were held in Brisbane in April.

Brooke (Oboe) and fellow Canterbury student Dylan Swansson (Year 12, Trumpet) performed in the A-Grade Concert Band section with the Queensland Youth Orchestra’s Wind Symphony.

Brooke continued her musical success winning two awards at the Queensland Band Association’s Queensland Solo and Ensemble Competition (QSEC).

These were the Under 19 Junior Woodwind Solo category and the Junior Woodwind Champion of Champions event.

University Program Acceptance Savita Datta (Year 11) was selected to participate in the University of Queensland’s (UQ) Young Scholars Program.

She had the opportunity to engage and network with other students, as well as UQ student mentors and members of UQ’s academic community, during a fiveday residential camp at the St Lucia campus.

Quota Ambassador Year 11 student Jodie Muller was named the Quota International of Beenleigh World Service Ambassador of the Year. This is the third consecutive year a Canterbury student has won this award and for Jodie to achieve such an outstanding result is a credit to her.

The competition included a four-minute speech on one of Quota’s twenty-one hand-in-hand projects. Jodie chose the Paediatric Ward in Las Piñas, the Philippines, which received a $500 donation in her name.

Legal Studies Experience Canterbury College Year 12 Legal Studies students competed in the Bond University Mooting Competition at the Harry Gibbs Commonwealth Law Courts in Brisbane.

Aayushi Mathur (Senior Counsel), Natasha Stanley (Junior Counsel), Bronte Kilmister (Acting Solicitor) and Tammie Ko (Legal Researcher) presented to the courts.

Aayushi was awarded the Advocacy Award and the Assistant Professor Louise Parsons, Director of Mooting (acting as Judge) made a special commendation on the Canterbury students’ appropriate courtroom manner, understanding of the law and effective communication.

The students were able to appreciate the difficult balance the courts have in providing fairness and justice to key stakeholders while ensuring the integrity of the legal process has been upheld.

Other Achievements, Awards and Competitions Canterbury College Student in The King and I Canterbury College student Hannah Bahr (Year 5) was alongside a cast of twenty-seven students performing with Opera Australia in the award winning production of The King and I at the Queensland Performing Arts Centre’s (QPAC’s) Lyric Theatre, Brisbane. Hannah was cast as Princess Lawan, one of the twenty-two royal children of Siam.

She attended a month of rehearsals of up to eight-hour calls on the weekends and four hours in the evenings after school and performed in thirty-seven shows throughout the season.

International Space Settlement Design Competition Conor Anglim (Year 11), Alexander Asher (Year 10) and Adrian Cryer (Year 10) were part of the winning team in the International Space Settlement Design Competition held in the United States.

They competed at the Kennedy Space Center in an international race to develop a space settlement referred to as “Balderol”, located on the dark side of the Moon, against students from Australia, China, India, Pakistan, Uruguay, the USA and the UK. The students were placed into the joint fictitious company of Dougeldyne AstroSystems and Flechtel Constructors. They spent forty-eight hours creating their settlement with real world science and technology.

Queensland Premier Campbell Newman and Science Minister Ian Walker congratulated the students at a special ceremony at Parliament House.

Science and Engineering Challenge Canterbury College hosted the Brisbane South division heats for the annual Science and Engineering Challenge in July. The national competition is designed to inspire students to study Science and Engineering at a Senior High School and University level. Over the two days, Canterbury hosted sixteen schools. Canterbury College students placed Sixth in the event. Twenty-four of the College’s Extension Science students participated in a range of hands-on activities including building

hovercraft, catapults, Mars rover-style buggies, planes and bridges, as well as designing earthquake-proof buildings, electrical supply grids and network problem solving.

The students enjoyed exploring new science topics, while designing, building and testing. The day concluded with the traditional “Bridge Busting” to determine which school’s construction was the most structurally sound.

ANZAC Competition Success Year 11 student Katelyn Zoethout will be travelling to Canberra for the ANZAC Centenary in 2015 after she won an ANZAC Day Speechwriting Competition.

The competition was organised by the Greenbank RSL Sub-branch. Katelyn wrote her speech on the ANZAC legend and included themes of courage, mateship, honour and sacrifice.

Young Artists in Residence Taylah Clements (Year 11) was selected as part of the 2014 Markwell Presents production Spill.

Each year, the Brisbane-based Cinematic Theatre company undertakes The Young Artists in Residence Project (YAiR) – an opportunity for young theatre makers to work, and play, with a professional youth theatre company.

Spill was presented in a one week season at the Kingston Butter Factory, and Taylah was chosen as part of the ten-member cast after a large-scale audition.

Australian Youth Rocketry Challenge Year 11 students Conor Anglim and Kevin Fung won First place in the Australian Youth Rocketry Challenge (AYRC) Senior School Division.

The objective of the challenge was to launch a rocket with an egg as the payload. The rocket had to reach approximately 800 feet high before a parachute was deployed, which had to then bring the rocket and the egg back to Earth undamaged. Conor and Kevin achieved a near perfect launch.

State Textiles Awards Canterbury College students won awards in the State Finals of the Queensland Chamber of Agricultural Societies Make and Model Competition.

Drag Racing Champion

The competition showcases the various creative uses of natural fibres in fashion and garment making. Year 9 student Eliza Turton won First place and Caitlin Pascoe, also Year 9, won Third place in the Self-Made Middle School category.

Rising Star Award.

Natasha Stanley (Year 12) also competed in the Wearable Art category and presented a Peacock inspired dress, fan and head piece.

Junior Secondary Schools Culinary Challenge Year 10 students Naomi Smith and Benjamin Raynor faced Queensland’s best aspiring chefs when they represented Canterbury College in the Junior Secondary Schools Culinary Challenge at The Royal Brisbane Show (EKKA) in August. The team placed Third against eleven teams from across the State.

The students qualified after Naomi Smith and Cressida Farmer (Year 10) won the Brisbane South Regional Final at Southbank Institute of Technology.

The challenge involves students designing and developing a competition dish, with the assistance of a Chef mentor, using required and essential ingredients.

The students were mentored by Adam Gleaves who runs a Beenleigh based business “Chef Express” with his wife Sally.

Literary Competition Ashleigh North (Year 9) was awarded Highly Commended in the Independent Education Union (IEU) 2014 Literary Competition. She was recognised in the Short Story (Year 9-10) section of the state-wide competition for her piece Alia.

Keeping Australia Beautiful Quincy Phan (Year 5) won the Keep Australia Beautiful Colouring Competition. Quincy received a camera and a certificate.

Dylan Leo (Year 10) won the Australian National Drag Racing Christmas Tree Trophy at the Benaraby Aeroflow Sportsman Nationals in October. He also won the 60’

Opti-MINDS Canterbury students won First, Second and Honours in the Opti-MINDS Regional Challenge. The challenge is “an inclusive team challenge which empowers participants to think, create and communicate”. Teams are presented with a scenario or problem to solve and they are required to research, develop and present a sustainable solution.

The Junior School team won its Language/Literature Challenge which was based on Australian Children’s Literature and progressed to the State Final. The team included Daniella Spink (Year 6), Jack Danbury (Year 6), Sinead Finch (Year 5), Briana Dinsdale (Year 5) and Charlie Deane (Year 5).

The Year 7 team was awarded Honours for its solution to the Science and Engineering Challenge. Hunter Cullen, Liam Whittaker, Richard Bahrett, James Asher, Hamish Kabel-Pluck and Jonathan Klein put together an impressive machine and an entertaining story about genetically modified, garbage-recycling worms.

The Year 9 team, including Taniesha Purnell, Taneisha Richardson, Sola Hughes, Gabrielle Lundie, Michelle Xia and Kirra Lang, produced one of the most engaging and entertaining performances of the day. The students chose to deliver an important message about multiculturalism and valuing difference in response to the Language/Literature Challenge.

The Social Sciences Challenge included students from Years 8, 10 and 12. Their challenge was to imagine a world with no identity groupings and to present what that would be like. Aimee Munro (Year 12), Alexander Asher (Year 10), Nicola Cain (Year 8) and Danielle Soilleux (Year 8) described a world without family groupings, law enforcement or school-based peer-groups. This team was also awarded Honours and Second place.

Other Achievements, Awards and Competitions Mathematics Team Challenge Canterbury College hosted the 2014 Logan-Gold Coast Mathematics Team Challenge in the Canterbury Events Centre, with fifty-one teams (each of five students) from ten schools participating.

Canterbury entered eight teams from Years 6-12. The students solved maths problems and competed for the medals and trophies awarded to the top three teams in each of the four age divisions. Canterbury finished First in the Junior Division (Years 9 and 10), an outstanding achievement. Congratulations to the winning team of Malcolm Russell (Year 10), Jackson Balme (Year 10), Hamza Malik (Year 10), William Glass (Year 9) and Sean Fraser (Year 9).

Our Senior Division teams also performed commendably. The Senior A Team of Qian Cheng (Year 11), Savita Datta (Year 11), Darren Sharma (Year 12), Minglan Sheng (Year 12) and Nancy Zhao (Year 12) placed Second. The Senior B Team of Abhishek Jagtap (Year 11), Dorris Xie (Year 11), Nariyoshi Miyata (Year 12), Arjune Murali (Year 12) and Darashpreet Singh (Year 12) placed Third.

Strategic Goal: Teaching, Learning and Curriculum Student Performance National Benchmark Testing was introduced in 2008 to take the place of State testing of Literacy and Numeracy.

Our students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 were very well prepared for the test and achieved results that were at or well above the State and National averages in all areas in 2014.

Canterbury College received exceptional results and the percentages of students tested reaching or exceeding the National Minimum Standard benchmark in each area were as follows:

affiliations with several Tertiary Institutions including the Bond University Partnership Program, Griffith University’s Partnership School Program and University of Southern Queensland (USQ) Springfield Campus Priority Plus School Partnership Program.

Year 12 2014 QCS Test Results The 2014 cohort performed well in the QCS Test which occurs on the first Tuesday and Wednesday of September each year.

Senior School Report Again in 2014, the majority of Canterbury students undertook the traditional OP pathway, with 99 per cent of those students who made a QTAC application receiving an offer for tertiary study. The academic results achieved by our 2014 students were excellent across a wide range of subjects. Our 2014 graduates studied within the traditional OP pathways, or Vocational Education and Training (VET) programs or a combination of OP and VET courses.

Canterbury College in 2014 continued to offer a wide range of traditional Senior subjects including English, the Sciences, Mathematics, Music, Languages, Technologies, the Arts, Health, Physical Education and Social Sciences to its Senior students. These were complemented by courses including Business Cert. III, Construction Cert. I, Fitness Cert. III, Furniture Manufacturing Cert. II and Hospitality Cert. II. New equipment provided students increased access to our workshops and commercial kitchen. In 2014, 25 of our Year 12 students completed first year university subjects, two students completed Diplomas and 83 students completed certificate courses. The College had

CANTERBURY COLLEGE

Tertiary Studies and Partnership Schemes 2014 was a successful year, with many students undertaking university courses while in Year 12. The students were successful in completing courses at Griffith University and The University of Queensland. Students studied courses in Music, Performing Arts, Design Futures, Engineering, Business, Biology and Introductory Russian.

Traineeships and Apprenticeships Fifteen students undertook traineeships or apprenticeships in Years 11 and 12 in 2014.

Students attend the workplace one day per week to gain experience in a particular industry and complete their formal training with Registered Training Organisations.

Due to the changing nature of study, students are opting to complete Diploma Courses while at school.

This allows them to get a ranking of approximately 82 which provides them with opportunities for tertiary study. Students are also able to obtain credits from some tertiary institutions in areas of study. Two students completed a Diploma of Business in 2014 and approximately 10 students commenced the course for completion in 2015.

Traineeships and Apprenticeships included Certificate II in Beauty, Pharmacy and Retail. The Certificate III’s included Children’s Services, Hairdressing, Business, Information Technology, Live Production, Theatre and Events (technical operations), Sport and Recreation Officer, Hospitality Operations Level III and Retail.

Canterbury College is a Griffith Connect Partner School and at the end of 2014, students participated in the Griffith Connect Guaranteed Admission Scheme. Students needed to meet the criteria set out by Griffith University with regards to their academic results in Year 11 and Semester 1 of Year 12. Four students were granted guaranteed admission to Griffith University for undergraduate study in Law, Nursing and Secondary Education.

Two students participated in the Griffith Engineering program and after successful completion of a semester of study were also granted guaranteed admission into Griffith University to study Engineering. One student was awarded the Griffith Connect Academic Excellence Bursary to assist with her studies in the first year.

Five students participated in the Griffith BUSINESS School Outreach Program and chose to study from the Business Management and Commerce strands. Successful completion of this course allowed students to gain guaranteed admission into a Business strand of study at Griffith University. Two students took up this opportunity.

One student received the Griffith University Business Transition Award which had a monetary benefit for the first year of study.

Many students in Year 12 who have successfully completed traineeships use this as a benchmark to gain a ranking to enter into tertiary study. Some of the students have secured full time or casual employment from these traineeships.

Many students undertook courses at TAFE, Southbank Institute of Technology, SkillsTech and private colleges to obtain certificate courses in Information Technology, Business, Justice Studies, Events Management, Music, Graphic Design, Interactive Digital Media, Landscaping, Design Fundamentals – Photo-imaging, Engineering, Retail, Electro-technology (Career Start), Plumbing and Construction.

Strategic Goal: Teaching, Learning and Curriculum Australian Vocational Student Prize At the end of 2014, students were nominated for the Australian Vocational Student Prize. This is for students who demonstrate exceptional skill, commitment and achievement while undertaking a Vocational Education and Training (VET) in Schools program or Australian Schoolbased Apprenticeship or Traineeship as part of their Senior secondary studies. This is an opportunity to showcase and celebrate the achievements of vocational students and the support provided by the whole school community. Students nominated for 2014 were Harrison Churches, Emily Churchley and Rajiv Krishna.

Middle School Report

Two 2013 Canterbury graduates Mark Burley and Liam Ackland were awarded the Australian Vocational Student Prize and received a monetary prize. Mark started at SkillsTech where he completed a Certificate II in Electrotechnology (Career Start). This proved to be quite challenging, especially the Mathematics and Physics involved. Mark persisted in his work and completed the course. He then applied for a job in Queensland Rail as an apprentice. He was successful in obtaining the apprenticeship and is enjoying his vocational pathway. Liam worked in the Hospitality industry. He has completed his traineeship, worked in the Canterbury Café and is presently employed in the Hospitality industry working interstate and in Queensland.

• Years 7 and 9 students participated in a range of tests that help prepare for NAPLAN testing.

Work Experience Work Experience opportunities for our students in 2014 included Engineering, Hospitality, Manufacturing, Childcare, Farming, Sheet Metalwork, Education, Computer repairs and maintenance, Building and Construction, Aged Care Services, Pharmacy and Retail.

Academic • Data analysis of NAPLAN results was completed using the State-based SUNLANDA program. All results in Years 7 and 9 indicated that students were above the State means in all areas. Numeracy was identified as a strength. Adjusted planning of the curriculum commenced to meet the needs identified through this analysis.

• Explicit teaching of NAPLAN strategies were implemented with resources created by the English Curriculum Coordinator. Resources were purchased to assist in preparation.

• Inclusive Education staff designed more explicit teaching for students on IEPs or ILPs. • Maths Mate was introduced to regularly check student understanding of core Mathematics skills.

• Year 8 students underwent practice tests in preparation for 2015 NAPLAN. Mighty Minds Education Systems were used to analyse results in literacy and numeracy in order to provide data for teachers in 2015.

• Analysis of student reports was completed for each semester to identify students at risk, and programs were adjusted to meet needs. Data reports were produced to identify underperforming students. OLSAT testing was included to compare raw scores with ability data.

• All new students to the Middle School were OLSAT tested on entry to provide important data to inform teachers of the need to extend and modify programs.

• Commendations were given to students identified as working above potential or who had made a significant gain in performance.

• Year Level Coordinators interviewed students identified as achieving under their school-based potential.

• Students at academic risk were identified and interviews conducted by Year Level Coordinators, Inclusive Education staff, Director of Students, Director of Curriculum or the Dean.

• Students in Middle School English participated in a number of competitions with success. Several students

elected to complete the International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS) English and Writing Competitions. Those who participated were very successful in showcasing their skills of language, reading, writing and spelling: • In the Assessment of Language Competence (ALC) two students from Year 9 received a High Distinction and a Distinction respectively, both for Listening.

• From a Mathematics perspective, Canterbury achieved some exceptional results as follows: -- Australian Mathematics Competition: 22 Middle School students entered; 8 were awarded Credits, 10 were awarded Distinctions and 2 High Distinctions.

-- The Australian Mathematics Trust Intermediate Olympiad: one student was invited to participate from Year 8 in this prestigious competition.

-- Maths Team Challenge: Canterbury College hosted more than 50 teams for the Maths Team Challenge. Two Year 9 students gained First place in the Junior Division.

-- Australian Problem Solving Mathematical Olympiads: Students from Years 7, 8 and 9 competed against each other in the Senior Division of the Olympiads. One Year 9 student finished in the top 10 per cent of all entrants in the country. Two Year 8 students finished joint Second in the College, beating several older students.

• Years 7, 8 and 9 students participated in Circuit Debating.

• Years 7 and 8 entered several teams in the Readers Cup Challenge.

• Results in Year 9 Extension English revealed appropriate extension for gifted students.

• The Year 9 “Innovations@Canterbury” program engaged the students in our community through real, meaningful opportunities. The focus in 2014 was on the local community.

Junior School Report Academic • NAPLAN – National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy -- Years 3 and 5 results indicated students are at or above State and National averages.

-- Data analysis of these results was used to adjust planning of our curriculum to meet class and individual needs.

-- Action plans were developed by teachers in Years 2-6 to provide a more focused approach to the curriculum requirements of NAPLAN. • Analysis of student results from Prep-Year 6 was done each term to identify curriculum adjustments required for at risk students and extension students.

• A new reporting process utilising the Accelerus software was developed so reports are sent each term.

• Students performing at a significant level were acknowledged through the Honour Roll presented on assembly.

• Staff were inserviced on the implementation of the Bring Your Own Technology (BYOT) program and the improved impact on student outcomes.

• BYOT was fully implemented in Year 4 classrooms.

• The Director of Digital Pedagogy (full-time) and another teacher (two days per week) worked closely with staff to develop digital pedagogy in class.

• Team Leaders supported the teachers in their year level with administration and academic resources and requirements.

• Sensory motor activities and resources were introduced into classrooms from Kindergarten-Year 6.

• A Sensory Motor Room or “Engine Room” was outfitted for class and individual use. A full-time teacher was appointed to run sessions.

• The Sensory Motor program for Kindergarten and Prep continued.

• Brigance Testing of Kindergarten students was completed to identify perceptual motor needs.

• PIPS assessments were completed in Prep to track literacy/numeracy development

• iPads were implemented for use in KindergartenYear 3 for classroom learning as part of the Mobile Learning program.

• Inclusive Education had one full-time and one parttime teacher for work with children across Junior School year levels.

• Staff were inserviced by Inclusive Education teachers on improved guided reading processes and decoding of words.

• Learning Enrichment assistants were provided with extensive inservice on literacy and numeracy practices in classrooms.

• Inclusive education identification practices were reviewed.

• The Understanding by Design pedagogy was implemented in Junior School, with extensive professional development provided to staff.

• A Director of Curriculum was appointed to oversee curriculum development and to work with staff in class.

• The Classroom Walkthrough process was undertaken, to be developed further in future.

• Many staff visited other classrooms for observations of particular activities.

• The “Ready Prep Go” readiness program was introduced for Kindergarten parents.

• “Talk ‘n’ Tips” sessions were run by staff on particular topics, e.g. Technology.

• Parents/volunteers were inserviced in the CANRead program.

Competitions • A large number of students participated in the International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS) in English, Spelling, Writing, Mathematics and Science.

• Six students participated in the Australasian Mathematics Olympiad.

• A Junior School team entered the Readers Cup Challenge.

• Students participated in interschool chess competitions.

• The Junior School Opti-MINDS team were selected for the State Final.

• Easter Eggs were collected for distribution to aged care homes and Anglicare.

• Christmas gifts and food parcels were collected for Anglicare charities.

• The Student Representative Council met monthly.

• Kindergarten incursions included the “Toot, Whistle, Plunk and Boom Show”, “Koori Kulture” and the “Santa Around the World Show”.

• The Triple P Parenting course was run several times throughout the year by Assistant Dean of Junior School Mrs Paula Deighton.

CANTERBURY COLLEGE

Extracurricular Sport Middle and Senior School Sport (Years 7-12) 2014 will be remembered as when our students represented Canterbury College with purpose and distinction.

We witnessed mass participation, collective and individual triumphs and notable accomplishment across all TAS and Non-TAS Sports. With a new structure in place within the TAS system (nine schools), the College proudly finished in the top five in two trimesters and sixth in the other. The culture of excellence and school spirit continued to gain traction and embed itself within the Canterbury fabric. An extracurricular program the size of the one at Canterbury College always benefits from the committed and passionate involvement of coaching staff. This integral component continued to be the backbone of our program. The parent body must be acknowledged for their logistical support and assistance throughout the year. The collective efforts of the Canterbury College Facilities Staff need to be praised for the provision of excellent and safe ovals, courts and fields and everything else in between.

More than 80 teams had the fortune of representing Canterbury College throughout 2014 through a mixture of TAS and Non-TAS sports pathways. Sixteen sporting activities were offered to the College student body.

These included: Cricket, Volleyball, Tennis, Basketball, Rugby, Netball, Hockey, Touch Football, Soccer, Swimming, Cross Country, Athletics, Cheerleading, Rowing, Equestrian and Gym.

• Excellent Participation: More than 80 TAS teams were filled throughout Trimesters 1, 2 and 3

The Associated Schools (TAS) Within the TAS system, the College competed with great merit in the Blue Division for Trimesters 1, 2 and 3. Competing in the TAS Blue Division has become the norm at Canterbury College with many of the sports recording a season win percentage of over 50 per cent.

Special mention to our Hockey Teams who recorded two Premierships and a season win percentage of 70 per cent, the best for the College in 2014.

• First V Girls’ Basketball • Year 9 Boys’ Football • Second VI Girls’ Touch Football The TAS Swimming, Cross Country and Athletics Carnivals provided an opportunity for the combined boys’ and girls’ squads to unite and compete against the nine TAS schools. The Swimming Team placed a solid Seventh, the Athletics Team placed a commendable Sixth whilst the Cross Country Team placed a welldeserved Fifth. These results reflected a solid training regime undertaken by our students and a belief that Canterbury can be competitive in the Premier Division of TAS organisation.

Extracurricular Sport Interhouse Carnivals (Middle School and Senior School) The governing philosophy of the three Interhouse Carnivals was to maximise involvement of the entire student body, while allowing talented individuals to excel in their chosen area of excellence.

Participation was well on display throughout the year.

National Championships Domestically, the highest level of competition is selection to attend the Australian Championships. To be selected for competition at this level reflects significant talent and commitment, along with perspiration and perseverance.

Representative Honours Students were afforded the opportunity to pursue individual representative honours through the Independent District (Swimming, Cross Country and Athletics) or the Pacific District (all other sports).

Canterbury College amassed the proud record of more than 80 students who progressed to the District level of competition, thus registering the right for entry into the South Coast Championships. From these Regional Championships, 33 Canterbury College students were selected to represent South Coast at the State Championships. This was an excellent achievement.

Under 17 World Basketball Championships Year 12 student, Bridget O’Brien was selected to compete at the Under 17 World Basketball Championships as a part of the Australian Team. This achievement is a College first and will be forever etched in the Canterbury sporting landscape. Her framed team singlet now adorns the Canterbury Events Centre (CEC) walls as a constant reminder of this remarkable achievement.

Junior Sportsperson of the Year and Junior Sportsmanship Award The Junior Sportsperson of the Year and Junior Sportsmanship Awards are the two most prestigious of the Junior School Sports program. In 2014, these awards were presented as follows: Junior Sportsperson of the Year Grace Hamilton (Year 6) and Jack Humrich (Year 6) Junior Sportsmanship Award Kalani Lang (Year 6) Queensland School Sport Throughout 2014 there were a number of students selected in representative teams through the Queensland School Sport pathways. Junior TAS Championships 2014 In 2014, all students represented the College with pride and distinction producing excellent team and individual results across the Swimming, Cross Country and Athletics seasons.

Swimming In March, the JTAS Swimming Team ventured to the Brisbane Aquatic Centre, Chandler to participate in the JTAS Swim Championships. The team placed Third overall in the Red Division. The 9 Years Girls were crowned JTAS Red Division Champions, the 9 Years Boys finished in Second and the 11yr Girls also finished in Second place.

The Swim Captains for 2014 Riley Barker and Emily Wilson were outstanding, leading the students in the pool with terrific race results and leading the cheering in the stands. The team showed great camaraderie, always supporting and congratulating each other on their performances.

Swimmer of the Year (Male) Jett Richter (Year 4) Cross Country Canterbury College Junior Cross Country athletes finished a stellar 2014 season by winning the JTAS Cross Country Championship for the second year in a row. The team also won the Beenleigh District Cross Country title with 12 students selected to represent the district at the South Coast Regional Trials.

Each year, the students exemplify the meaning of House spirit when they cheer on not only their own House members but also support opposition teams as they finish each race. Both days were a huge success with Ramsey tallying the most points across the two carnivals. Extracurricular Arts Performance Music Report In 2014 the Music Department at Canterbury College offered an extensive Studio Music and Performance Music program.

Guest Conductors Professor Steve Peterson, Ithaca College, NY USA and President of College Band Directors National Association, USA rehearsed and worked with the Symphonic Band.

Students of all ages were actively involved in developing their musical talents and interests through learning to sing and/or play an instrument and by their involvement in one or more of the 20 Performance Music Ensembles.

Music ensembles performed regularly at College functions, community events and at a wide range of concerts throughout the year.

British violinist and strings pedagogue, Sophie Till worked with individual violin students as well as the String Orchestra, Symphonia and Symphony Orchestra.

Performance Music Program The Performance Music Program supported more than 300 students involved in seven Choirs, four String Orchestras, a Symphony Orchestra, Stage Band, two Concert Bands and chamber ensembles.

Overview of Events for 2014 Semester 1 Music Camps In readiness for the year ahead, Cantabile, Symphonic Band and Symphony Orchestra held separate rehearsal camps at Queensland Conference and Camping Centre (QCCC), Mt Tamborine during Term 1.

Channel 9’s The Block at Mitre 10 At the end of Term 1, the students of Stage Band and Cantabile entertained shoppers at the Beenleigh Mitre 10 Megastore. Cantabile were also featured on the 8.30am National Weather report which was broadcast from Mitre 10.

Starry Starry Night Many performance ensembles entertained families and guests at this College community event, held in the Canterbury Events Centre. The ensembles were Stage Band, Rock School, Junior Singers, Junior Choir, Treble Voices, Cantabile and the Starry Starry Orchestra.

Additionally, there were solo vocal performances by Kirra Lang (Year 9), Alla Yarosh (Year 9) and Sofia De Vita (Year 12).

Combined Anglican Schools Music Festival Selected students participated in this inaugural festival in the massed choir, symphony orchestra and symphonic band. The festival culminated in a concert in the evening at the Concert Hall of the Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC). This was a great opportunity for our students to meet musicians from other Anglican schools in the Greater Brisbane region and perform under the direction of some of Australia’s leading conductors.

Extracurricular Arts Queensland Youth Music Awards The Symphonic Band and two of our choirs represented Canterbury College at this event. The Symphonic Band competed well in the Secondary Schools Band Section.

The Junior Choir entered the Primary Schools division and received a Silver award and Third place in their heat, which moved them through to the Primary Choir Finals.

The students performed very well again and received a Silver award. The Cantabile Choir competed in the Secondary Schools Choir Section – Over 30 Voices.

The students performed brilliantly and received a Gold Award and First Place.

Winter Music Festival Concerts All ensembles including choirs, bands, and orchestras performed over three concerts to full-houses in the Arts Centre Auditorium. These concerts, a highlight in the Semester 1 performance calendar, were a chance for families to hear the culmination of a semester’s work.

Grandparents’ Day Students in the Junior School Music program delighted their grandparents at the special Grandparents’ and students’ assembly. The ensembles who performed included Junior Singers, Junior Choir, All Star Strings and Junior Strings.

Pemulwuy! National Male Voice Festival Two students from the Boys’ Vocal Group represented Canterbury College at this national festival that brought together 500 male singers from across Australia and culminated in a concert at the Concert Hall of QPAC. They were Year 9 students Rohan Cornick and Sean Fraser.

Voices Across the Pacific Festival Tour The Cantabile Choir travelled to Sydney to participate in the Voices Across the Pacific festival. The festival brought together choirs from around Australia and the United States of America to sing two massed choral works by renowned international composers. The works were Lux Aeterna by American composer, Morten Lauridsen and Honour the Earth by Australian composer, Sarah Hopkins. The festival concert was held in the Concert Hall of the Sydney Opera House. The Cantabile Choir were honoured to open the concert with a set of three songs that included the Australian work, Kungala. Whilst in Sydney, the choir also gave a lunchtime concert at St

Andrew’s Cathedral, had a choral masterclass with the festival conductor Dr Heather Buchanan, Professor of Choral Music from Montclair University, New Jersey, USA, and saw the shows The Lion King and Strictly Ballroom.

The Voices Across the Pacific tour culminated in a repeat performance of the festival concert in Brisbane at St John’s Cathedral.

Semester 2 Brisbane Band Festival The second semester began with Symphonic Band and Stage Band competing well in this event in the Queen St Mall.

String Fest 2014 This festival brought together the most advanced string players from schools in Queensland and interstate to play in string orchestras, performing music of the highest calibre. Representing Canterbury College were violinists Sola Hughes (Year 9) and Brooke Hitchmough (Year 10) and cellists Breanna Capriotti (Year 10), Lara Higham (Year 11) and Savita Datta (Year 11).

Guest Conductors work with Cantabile in the weeks leading up to the Australian National Eisteddfod: Tim Sherlock – this Brisbane-based composer worked with the students on their singing of his work, The Swan.

This was a good opportunity for the choir to learn about a work from its composer.

Dr Rollo Dilworth, Temple University, Philadelphia, USA. – Dr Dilworth taught a Masterclass and was most impressed with the students’ singing.

Harley Mead, Brisbane-based conductor and composer – Mr Mead brought much energy to his Masterclass with the students.

Australian National Eisteddfod The Cantabile Choir traveled to Canberra to compete in two sections of the Australian National Eisteddfod, held at Llewellyn Hall in the School of Music, Australian National University. The two sections had strict rules that included singing an Australian composition, one a cappella work, and works in a number of parts. In the afternoon of August 16, the choir won First Place in the 19 Years and Under Choir Championships. That evening, the

Australian Choral Challenge was held, and against a field of community, adult and university choirs, the Cantabile Choir performed exceptionally well and won First Place.

In addition to their first place win for Kungala, they were awarded the prize for Best Performance of an Australian composition. A fantastic achievement.

Jazz Music Institute Visit The Jazz Music Institute Big Band visited and worked with our Stage Band before performing individually and together in a concert in the Arts Centre Auditorium.

Assemblies and Chapels • Head’s Assembly 2: Stage Band and Cantabile • End-of-Term Chapel: Middle School Girls’ Chorale • Head’s Assembly 3: Junior Choir Essentially Ellington Masterclass Three musicians from the prestigious Jazz at the Lincoln Centre, New York visited Canterbury and worked with the Stage Band. They are from an educational program that promotes the music of jazz great Duke Ellington, across schools in the United States. After working with the stage band, they performed for a large audience during the lunch recess in the Arts Centre Auditorium.

State Honours Ensemble Program (SHEP) Canterbury College was very well represented at SHEP held at the Queensland Conservatorium from 2-5 October.

More than 30 students were accepted and participated in this prestigious event in the choirs, orchestras and concert bands. They rehearsed in their vacation and presented their programs at the final concerts.

Loud Lunches The Rock School performed during lunch recesses for Junior School students and Middle and Senior School students. They were very well received.

Musicfest As the largest festival of its kind in Australia in which more than 20,000 students competed, our results were again outstanding. Double Platinum. The highest of awards were given to Symphonic Band and Cantabile for their excellent performances.

Canterbury Idol Final Involving students from Years 7-12, and after numerous rounds of competition, the 2014 Canterbury Idol culminated in a Grand Final in the Canterbury Events Centre. The Middle and Senior School community enjoyed the talents of all finalists, with Year 12 student Jannah Felix winning the 2014 Canterbury Idol Final.

Jannah had won the Senior School Final and Year 9 student Angela Karac won the Middle School Final.

Gala Concert The Music Department’s Annual Gala Concerts were held in the Canterbury College Auditorium in the Arts Centre on Sunday 2 November. More than 300 students were featured over four concerts with our choral and instrumental ensembles performing at their best. All four concerts were produced into a 2-DVD Set. Supporting College Events The Music Department provided performances throughout the year at Chapel services, Spirit Assemblies and Head’s Assemblies. During Term 4 significant musical support was given to the Annual Excellence Awards and the Carols@Canterbury event.

The Music Supporters’ Group provides parents with an outstanding way to demonstrate their support to the Music Department through active involvement in their children’s musical experiences.

In 2014, the group has supported numerous concerts with refreshments, organised and managed the majority of all non-musical logistics of the Gala Concerts and Winter Music Festival, contributed significant funds for the purchase of sound equipment and completed major fund raising through events such as The Canterbury College Golf Day and the inaugural Movie Under the Stars night. The Music Supporters’ Group is integral to the success of the music program at Canterbury College.

Extracurricular Arts Arts Academy - Visit to Interlochen Centre for the Arts, Michigan, USA During the first three weeks of January 10 dedicated arts students from Canterbury College travelled to the United States to attend a two-week residency of classes at Interlochen Centre for the Arts in Michigan.

These students started the trip with a 14-hour flight to Los Angeles where they stayed for two days touring Beverly Hills, walking the Walk of Fame in Downtown Hollywood, shopping at the Citadel Outlets and spending a day at Universal Studios. The touring group then travelled to Chicago, with a two hour transfer becoming a three-day adventure due to the weather.

The group went on the Chicago Subway to the Theatre District to see the Blue Man Group, and over the next two days, braving sub negative 20 degree Celsius temperatures, visited the Chicago Art Institute and the Field Museum. On the third day in Chicago, the group took a seven-hour bus trip arriving that evening at Interlochen Arts Academy. The 10 Canterbury College students joined a community of 500 students from around the world who board at Interlochen for nine months of the year.

They joined in classes as varied as beat-boxing, fashion reclamation, tap dancing, sword fighting, writing a radio play and ballet dancing until 6.30pm. They all learned so much, made lifelong friends and became a tight-knit group on this wonderful tour.

The Magic of Musicals An inspirational evening of entertainment was enjoyed in April as student soloists and Cantabile joined Rachael Beck in Concert.

Our sensational seven soloists were Lauren Conway (Year 12), Sofia DeVita (Year 12), Kirra Lang (Year 9), Jackson Lyle (Year 12), Taniesha Purnell (Year 9), Indira Shields (Year 12) and Alla Yarosh (Year 9). These students received individual lessons with Ms Beck and had the privilege of learning from a performer of such a high calibre. Ms Beck brings years’ of experience on the stage as a performer and actor and the students are very fortunate to have had this time with her. Ms Beck said it gave her enormous pleasure to inspire the extremely talented students of Canterbury College.

Griffith University Drama A group of highly skilled Drama students entered the annual Griffith University Early Start to Tertiary Studies (GUESTS) program offered as part of the Canterbury College Arts Academy. This is an opportunity for highachieving Drama students to take part in a first year Undergraduate course of study for a semester and also explore forms and styles of dramatic performance not usually covered in the Year 12 Drama program.

From Canterbury College, Lauren Conway, Sofia De Vita, Indira Shields, Savannah Walker, Nicole Archer, Katelin Schumann and Alanna Sawyer were enrolled in the course. They had the opportunity to engage with such topics as Stanislavski’s method of Realism, Grotowski’s theories on Transformative Theatre, Physical Theatre, Theatre of Dreams (a form of surrealism) and Theatre of the Oppressed (a form of political theatre). All students enrolled in the thirteen-week course found the content challenging and highly rewarding, as it offered them a chance to create and shape pieces of dramatic action that were engaging and inspired.

Ultimately, however, the course came down to the final assessment piece: a group-based, student-devised performance, using the theme of “The Elements” (Fire, Earth, Wind and Water) as their starting point.

The resulting ten-minute performances allowed the students to stretch their creativity to its limits. Griffith University lecturer (and Course Coordinator) Dr Linda Hassell commented that the results achieved by our Year 12 Drama students were consistent with those of the first year students studying the same content at Griffith, which is a positive reflection on the high quality of dramatic meaning created by our students.

Andrew Lloyd Webber’s CATS Canterbury College students gave an outstanding performance in the Harvest Rain production of the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical CATS in July. Fifty students from Canterbury participated and played five performances where the audiences were of three thousand or more in the Great Hall at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre.

More than eight hundred performers were in the production, the southern hemisphere’s largest ever, and it included a professional cast led by Marina Prior.

The students also performed at Spirit Assembly and shared some of the expertise they gained through their involvement in the show.

WotOpera Brisbane Twenty Canterbury College students performed their own opera at the Judith Wright Centre in August as part of WotOpera Brisbane. The WotOpera Project is aimed at unlocking the creative potential of young people through experiential learning in the performing arts.

The students collaborated in workshops in the month before the show to create the music, libretto (lyrics), set and costumes. The Canterbury College Opera was chosen to close the evening.

Music Performers’ Collective The first performance for the Canterbury Music Performers’ Collective was in March, at Palm Lakes Resort as part of their Open Day celebrations.

The performers for the event were vocalists Kirra Lang (Year 9) and Alla Yarosh (Year 9), violinists Mia (Year 8), Sola (Year 9) and Lucia Hughes (Year 5) and Brooke Hitchmough (Year 10), and cellists Breanna Capriotti (Year 10) and Cindy Masterman (Year 7).

Adventure Education Playground Opened Canterbury College’s Adventure Education Playground in the Kindergarten area was completed in 2014 and was opened to our students.

The new playground provides ample space and opportunity for children in their play to solve

problems, master gross motor skills, refine balance and coordination, learn to self-regulate and form friendships.

It has been designed by international consultants to meet all certification standards and is able to be accessed according to different developmental needs of the children.

Strategic Goal: Community New Families Welcome Evening We welcomed many new families into our community with the New Families Welcome Evening in February. It was indeed a pleasure to meet and share experiences with so many new families.

Foundation Day Foundation Day is a celebration of Canterbury College’s growth from a small rural school to the outstanding premier College it is today. The photos from the archives show remarkable progress throughout the years and reflect the hard work and dedication of Canterbury’s Founding Fathers.

Past students, parents and staff are all a part of this rich history. Students, parents and staff have also made a significant contribution to the College’s recent history.

Canterbury College has cemented its position as a leading school not only in Logan but also nationally and internationally. The community will continue to enjoy growth and will continue to celebrate achievements past and present. Canterbury College has definitely found its place in the community and in many lives and hearts.

Becket House took out the prestigious Cursus Magnus Relay title as part of the Foundation Day celebrations. The event is one that promotes interhouse sport for health and is a chance to encourage College and House spirit.

Mother’s Day Mothers, grandmothers, aunts and carers are treasured members of the Canterbury College community and we thank them for joining in our Mother’s Day events in 2014.

There were many happy faces at the Breakfast in the Canteen, the Kindergarten Afternoon Tea and the Prep Pamper Time. Many children took the chance to buy something special for the occasion at the Mother’s Day stall.

TAS Ecumenical Service The TAS calendar began with the TAS Ecumenical Service.

With representatives from all 13 TAS schools, it was a great day of celebration, and students and staff rejoiced in the theme of sportsmanship and school spirit.

School Captains’ Dinner Captains of Independent schools across Brisbane met in February at Old Government House on the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) Gardens Point Campus.

The guest speaker was QSuper CEO and 2013 Telstra Businesswoman of the Year Ms Rosemary Vilgan who advised the students on leadership. Canterbury College Captains Kristin Magarry and Jackson Lyle attended and found the opportunity a valuable experience.

ANZAC Day Canterbury College staff and students commemorated ANZAC Day at the Canterbury Events Centre. The College has always respected and acknowledged ANZAC Day with a service attended by staff and students. Junior, Middle and Senior School Captains also attended ANZAC Day events on 25 April.

World’s Greatest Shave Queensland maroon and New South Wales blue came together in a rare show of solidarity for a great cause at a Spirit Assembly in March. Six Canterbury staff members had their hair shaved or coloured to support the Leukaemia Foundation’s annual World’s Greatest Shave event. The fund raiser supports research into leukaemia, lymphomas, myeloma and related disorders, as well as helping to provide family assistance and care.

Mr Anthony Hillier organised the College’s event, and thank you to the staff who took part: Mr Nick Gillin, Ms Merrin Trewin, Mr Ian Lees, Mrs Deanne Hamilton, Ms Debbie Berger and Mr Alan Lyle.

Canterbury Café For the fifth year running, Canterbury Café was operated by the Year 12 Hospitality students from the kitchen of the Canterbury Events Centre. Parents, teachers and students alike continued to embrace the café with open arms and make it a meeting hotspot on Wednesday mornings.

The café has a dual purpose. Not only do the Year 12 students acquire the necessary skills to prepare a delicious array of food and beverages each week, but they are also fulfilling elements of the competencies

that they must complete to attain their Certificate II in Hospitality. As well as providing an obviously welcome service to the public, all profits are being directed to outfitting the kitchen area which will be used for other events held at the Canterbury Events Centre.

Junior School MasterChef The 2014 Junior School MasterChef competition was another outstanding success. We were amazed at the baking talents of the Junior School community. Not only were the cakes and sweets delicious, but they also looked fantastic.

This year the competition had an extraordinary 155 entries and the sale of cakes raised $464.40 for the Anglican Board of Missions. We were delighted with the response from the Canterbury community.

Boy/Girl Day Middle School students enjoyed the varied opportunities provided by the Boy/Girl Day program.

The purpose of the day was to challenge some of the pre-conceived notions young people have about gender. Boys cooked pizza in the kitchen while girls worked in the Technology Department creating products. This was a most successful day with positive feedback from the students.

Grandparents’ Day It was a wonderful day of laughter, songs and dancing when Junior School grandparents visited the College for a special Grandparents’ Day celebration.

The beloved visitors were treated to a special concert with performances from the young singers and dancers, as well as a morning tea and an art exhibition. Activities were then held in classrooms so the students could show what they had accomplished.

Under 8’s Day Canterbury students and teachers from Kindergarten to Year 2 enjoyed a wonderful day of fun and entertainment at Under 8’s Day. There were many activities to keep the children entertained including face painting, playing with animals and making puppets.

Good Shepherd Program During Semester 1, the Year 7 and Year 11 students participated in the Good Shepherd program. The Year 11 Good Shepherds impressed staff and students with their dedication and enthusiasm while providing a support system for their younger buddies and facilitating activities to develop qualities for success, such as building trust, confidence and resilience.

Book Week Parade The Junior School students brought some wonderful characters to life, including a Lego man, dragons, princesses and animals to celebrate Book Week.

Our Library Captains stepped out of a Hogwarts’ classroom and in true Canterbury tradition everyone joined in and embraced the occasion.

Every child made two links for a paper chain.

Students included their name and the title of a favourite book on their paper links before connecting them with their peers’ links. The finished paper chain was a powerful symbol of the Children’s Book Council of Australia Book Week Theme, “Connect to Reading: Reading to Connect”.

Father’s Day Fathers are important, influential role models in their children’s lives and each year Canterbury College takes the time to show appreciation to our fathers for everything they do.

Many families enjoyed breakfast in the Canteen and students were able to buy gifts for their fathers at the Father’s Day Stall organised by the Parents and Friends Association.

Lunches in the Boardroom In 2014, Canterbury College continued the unique tradition of students enjoying lunch in the Boardroom every week with the Head of College.

Strategic Goal: Community Starry Starry Family Fun Night Starry Starry Family Fun Night was a wonderful evening of celebration for the Canterbury community. The event was an outstanding success with more than 600 members of our College family attending. The younger members of our College wore face paint, took outlandish photos in the photo booth, jumped high in the jumping castle and generally enjoyed plenty of fun and laughter.

The many stage performances were a credit to our students who performed in front of their families, friends and the wider community. Our Parents and Friends Association members worked tirelessly on the outside barbeque and many parents from the Music Supporters’ Group also gave their time to support our College.

International Study Tours In 2014, Canterbury College has been privileged to welcome students from Germany, Papua New Guinea, India, Japan, Korea, China, Hong Kong and Thailand on long term and short term study tours, to experience the extraordinary curriculum and community life that is available.

The visitors were able to experience Australian culture through visits to the Gold Coast beaches to meet with a lifesaver, Sea World, Brisbane city, Southbank and the Queensland Museum. Canterbury College students enjoyed the opportunity to learn more about the world around them through their new international friends.

A special thank you to all our parents, staff and students involved and to Dr Lewes Peddell for the coordination of the event. Family Fun Nights are important to our community.

Canterbury students who embraced an ambassadorial role as a “buddy” by connecting with a peer from another country are to be commended for their motivation in seeking to engage with other cultures, grow their network of overseas friends and move beyond stereotypical views and attitudes of other cultures.

Canterbury College Golf Day Fourteen teams competed in the Annual Canterbury College Golf Day at the Mount Warren Park Golf Course.

Canterbury College homestay families welcomed the international students into their hearts and homes and their excellent care was greatly appreciated.

Cathedral Service After returning from the Vanuatu Pilgrimage Year 12 students Chloe Wilson, Rebecca Taylor and Tumanako Papuni spoke at the Hillbrook Anglican School Chapel at St John’s Cathedral in August. The students spoke about their experience on the island and the impact it has had on them since their return.

Additional supporters included Federal Member for Forde Mr Bert van Manen MP, Member for Waterford Mr Michael Latter MP and Councillor Mr Don Petersen.

Bandanna Day and Jeans for Genes Day In Semester 2, students, staff and parents supported Jeans for Genes Day and Bandanna Day. More than $2500 was raised to help fund children’s cancer support agencies and research into birth defects and genetic disorders.

Logan Hospital Canterbury College’s connection with Logan Hospital continued in 2014 with a number of students visiting for a day to see what really happens behind the scenes.

Head’s Thanksgiving Cocktail Evening In November, Mrs Donna Anderson hosted the annual Head’s Thanksgiving Cocktail Evening in honour of our wonderful volunteers who assisted at College events throughout the year, as well as in classroom and extracurricular activities.

The invaluable contribution of our parents, grandparents, carers, friends and wider community is truly appreciated and we offer our sincere gratitude.

Movie Under the Stars The Canterbury College community enjoyed a Movie Under the Stars event in November. Students, parents, friends and community members were able to enjoy How to Train Your Dragon 2 out on the oval. The Music Supporters’ Group coordinated food and beverages for the event.

International Women’s Day Breakfast In March seven Canterbury College students accompanied Mrs Donna Anderson, Ms Diana Glover and Ms Debbie Berger to the Brisbane Convention Centre for the annual United Nations (UN) International Women’s Day breakfast.

Kristin Magarry, Jessica Bohan, Madeleine Schulz, Minglan Sheng (Year 12), Katelyn Zoethout, Adell Ranger and Kelsey Fraser (Year 11) were able to join the celebration of this key event and enjoy a breakfast surrounded by tables of influential women, business and industry professionals and also fellow students.

Important gender issues and the challenges faced by many women in Australia and overseas, particularly Papua New Guinea, were highlighted and explored.

Emphasis was placed upon the leadership of men in business positions contributing to the inclusion and

Tours Vanuatu Pilgrimage Eight students travelled to the remote island of Gaua in Vanuatu with Director of Mission and Community Mrs Deanne Hamilton to immerse themselves in Melanesian culture.

The Pilgrimage was facilitated by the Anglican Board of Mission (ABM) with education officer Mr Greg Henderson coordinating a partnership between Canterbury College and Losalava Secondary School.

Students attended morning classes and taught their new friends about Australian culture, flora, fauna and geography. Daily devotion was a highlight, as the local students showed the importance of prayer and reflection in their community and also their amazing singing voices.

When the school day was complete, time was filled with sport, tree climbing, jungle walks, weeding and swimming. The students ate local produce with the most amazing tasting fruit and vegetables filling the plates at night in the host village of Namasari. After dinner, activities included singing and storytelling with the village children.

Each of the students learnt a great deal about the village, the region and, most importantly, about themselves.

A Memorandum of Understanding between the two schools has been signed and our students will continue to travel to Vanuatu in coming years. Hopefully, visitors from the island will also come to Canterbury College in the future.

Ski Trip In the mid-year holidays, twenty-nine Year 12 students and teachers Mr James Jenkins, Mr Nick Gillin, Ms Jacinta Cain and Ms Sarah Bentley flew to New Zealand for the annual Canterbury College Ski Trip.

The group skied the slopes of Coronet Peak, The Remarkables and Cardrona.

Other highlights included a dinner at the Skyline restaurant in Queenstown, the Maori Haka show and a day trip to Christchurch.

The students were also immersed in the traditions and culture of the island. The boys collected coral from the reef shelf (the only source of income on the island) and the girls were taught weaving techniques. They were all able to go offshore reef fishing and swimming in the pristine waters but found out very quickly that getting back into the vessel (a carved tree stump) was much more difficult than they had envisaged.

The students relied daily on an ABM supported Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) project that was implemented by local villagers in partnership with the Anglican Church of Melanesia (ACOM). They were able to see firsthand the improvements the project was making to the long term health of the community.

Listening to Village Leader Chief Astin talk about this was very moving. It also highlighted the strong need for continued efforts by the Church agencies and wider region to ensure assistance with local planning, implementation and maintenance.

CATS Canterbury College students gave an outstanding performance in the Harvest Rain production of the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical CATS in July.

Fifty students from Canterbury College participated and played five performances where the audiences were of three thousand or more in the Great Hall at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre.
