Canora CN workers show support for national strike Striking CN workers picketed outside the CN building on Railway Avenue in Canora on November 20. The Teamsters Canada Rail Conference, which represents approximately 3,200 CN employees who work as train conductors and railyard co-ordinators only in Canada, has been on strike since November 19.

Canora business owner attends major global business fair in China Nick Martinuik of MySpray Therapeutics in Canora recently attended the 126th Canton Import and Export Fair in Guangzhou, China.

Martinuik left on October 27 to attend the event which claims to be the oldest and largest of its kind in China, and returned on November 10.

“After attending, it would be safe to say it’s probably the largest in the world,” said Martinuik. “This is a global show with purchasers attending from all over the world.”

Martinuik said through the MySpray laboratory and manufacturing operation in Richmond, B.C. he has developed many business

contacts, including a marketing agent in the region where the Expo took place. “ We w e r e i n v i t e d b y the international trade association ‘Royal Classical Agriculture Ltd.’ which has many connections to the Chinese and global markets,” explained Martinuik.

“They recognized our unique products would be an excellent fit to promote in that region.”

After receiving positive feedback and response, Martinuik is pleased with his decision to make the trip to China.

“It is very clear to me that we have created something unique and unlike anything else in the world,” he said.

“Going into the Expo I

believed that the medicinal mushrooms would be the big draw, but surprisingly our product that received the most attention was MyPain LiniMint. Pain is universal in every country and when people feel the rapid relief it gets their attention.

“We also received attention for being able to formulate and produce any products that different regions of the world are searching for. Each region has its own specific health concerns and we have made connections with various countries such as Bangladesh, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Morocco and India, to name a few. “ Martinuik said the connections made with

international companies should be extremely helpful going forward.

“We are now preparing to meet with some of these companies to help develop and manufacture products specific to these many regional health issues,” he reported. “Each country has different government regulations and health agencies to work with, but within days of returning home I was informed that we are already approved in Bangladesh and we have plans to meet soon.”

Martinuik said a number of other Canadian natural health companies and natural food-based companies also made the trip to China for the Expo.

Search is on for next Saskatchewanderer

Wi t h n e a r l y 1 0 0 , 0 0 0 social media fans across Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, the Saskatchewanderer is a ‘must follow’ for residents and tourists, according to a release. As the program approaches its tenth year, the search is on for the new Saskatchewanderer “to promote our province to the world in 2020.”

“The Saskatchewanderer program brings attention to a range of industries and businesses in the province and highlights why Saskatchewan is a great place to operate a business, build a career and raise a family,” said Gene

“I am pleased this program continues to be a successful and effective marketing tool, showcasing all our province offers.”

Zane Buchanan, the 2019 Saskatchewanderer, brought his gift of writing and storytelling to the position, continued the release.

As a born Saskatchewanian who was living in Toronto, he jumped at the opportunity to return to the province to become the 2019 Saskatchewanderer.

looking forward to taking the perspective gained from this experience and applying it to whatever else comes my way.”

In 2020, the program will be refreshed and will align with the Plan for

Growth to build strong communities, families and a stronger Saskatchewan by focusing on small business, investment and entrepreneurs in the tourism industry.

Each applicant is required to shoot, edit and submit their own original video explaining why they should become the next Saskatchewanderer.

Applications will be accepted until noon on December 20 at www.saskatchewanderer.ca/apply.

Martinuik makes global contacts at China event Continued from Page 1 “I had also been to Shanghai a few years ago to attend a very similar Expo which really prepared me with the experience to return,” he said. “In business we need to understand the size of our market share and looking at Canada we have a small population of approximately 35 million over a large land mass, whereas that is the same population of some cities in these other countries.”

In many respects, the Asian approach to health and medicine is much different than here in North America.

Martinuik said there is much we can learn from their experience.

“It can be seen right from our differences in diet and lifestyles,” he explained.

“They rely heavily on traditional medicines and methods that have been used

successfully for thousands of years and place more validity on experience than on new experimental medicines, as we do here in the West.”

China has numerous medical facilities devoted to traditional medicine, and even the pharmacies and western-style hospitals have integrated the modern approaches with proven old school methods.

“We must put into perspective that eastern medicine is the origin of medical science and has been in existence for thousands of years, and our modern western approach to medicine is under one hundred years old at best,” said Martinuik.

“Canada has only just celebrated its 150th birthday. I believe we have a lot to learn from experienced cultures that are not influenced by dogmatic western marketing methods for only new pharmaceuticals. We need

to recognize the strengths and weaknesses of each style of medicine globally to integrate them into a common- sense approach with the goal of improving health

and wellness, and not just being focused on shareholder profits.”

Martinuik said he thoroughly enjoyed the visit to China and becoming aware

of the opportunity to help people on an international scale.

“My highlight is being entrusted to formulate new products for different health

concerns globally,” he said.

“Being a Canadian company comes with an understanding of having very high regulations in production and a gold standard in quality.”

Octogenarian continues tradition of walking “for the health benefit” Walking has been a passion for a Pelly resident since the 1960’s and she has no desire to give it up.

On October 17, Margaret Wa s e l e n k o w h o i s “ 8 5 years young,” made another walk from Pelly to Arran, this time accompanied by her friend Laura Dahl of Norquay, age 71.

The friends started the walk at 10 a.m. and arrived at their destination, 16.5 kms away, by 1:30 p.m.

“This would be the 14 th time I have made the walk to Arran,” Waselenko said recently. “Walking is my passion. “I enjoy it very much and try to walk at least four miles a day, when weather permits,” she said.

Lange of Pelly, accompanies Margaret and her friends by car when they go on a longer walk. “He feeds us goodies along the route, and then drives us back,” Margaret said.

Waselenko thinks back to when she first started walking.

“My late husband, Sam, who passed away in 2013, and I moved off the farm to Pelly in the late 1950s.

Near the end of the 1960s, I started going for walks, as a way to keep physically active for the sake of my health. Sometimes my husband would walk with me.

“I have convinced friends to walk with me. Some were a bit skeptical that my only motivation was to walk for

my own health, not for any other purpose or to support a cause, but I believe I would stiffen up if I quit walking.”

Waselenko makes the Pelly to Arran walk twice a year now, in spring and fall, and sometimes it’s a solo trip.

“I was a bit disappointed with the time of three-and-ahalf hours this fall. I’ve done

better,” she said.

Other friends who have walked with Waselenko in the past are Darlene Miller of Miller Agencies in Norquay, Violet Off of Pelly and Jean Zychkowski, formerly of Pelly and now of Kamsack.

“I have also walked from Pelly to Norquay, a distance of 12 kilometres,” she said.

Town Council sets rates for custom work with Town of Canora equipment

The setting of custom work rates for the use of Town of Canora equipment was among the items of concern for town council at its regular meeting on November 19.

Council authorized the mayor and all of council to attend the Saskatchewan Urban Municipalities Association (SUMA) convention to be held February 2 to 5, 2020 in Regina.

A bylaw to provide for incurring a long-term debt was introduced, read three times and adopted.

Final Crop Report for the period November 12 to 18 Some producers in the east-central region were able to return to the field in November and make some harvest progress. Most producers have wrapped up harvest operations while a significant number still need co-operative weather to get the rest of the crop in the bin according to Saskatchewan Agriculture’s final weekly crop report for 2019. Some fields remain wet and there are indications from producers that most of the crop

out will be harvested in the spring.

The east-central region has the least amount of crop combined in the province at 83 per cent of the crop in the bin as of the reporting period. This is up slightly from 82 per cent at the end of October.

Any crop harvested now is being taken tough or damp. Aeration and drying operations continue on many farms as they have for most of harvest.

Crop yields vary across the region and there are many reports of higher-thanexpected yields. Crop quality across the region is poor for almost all crops due to varying factors such as sprouting, staining and bleaching. Crop that was harvested early on fared better for quality.

Heading into winter, cropland topsoil moisture conditions are rated as 18 per cent surplus, 80 per cent adequate and two per cent short. On hay land and

pasture, topsoil moisture is rated as 15 per cent surplus, 79 per cent adequate, four per cent short and two per cent very short.

Average dryland hay yields for the region are as follows (in tons per acre): alfalfa one; alfalfa/brome 0.9; other tame hay 0.8; wild hay 0.6; and greenfeed 1.6.

The majority of livestock producers indicate that they have adequate to surplus supplies of feed (hay, straw, greenfeed and grain). Hay

quality going into winter is rated as 69 per cent good and 31 per cent fair.

Crop reporters indicated that winter wheat and fall rye acres are significantly down from previous years. A late harvest caused fall seeding delays for some producers.

Farmers are busy trying to complete harvest, hauling bales and grain, putting machinery away and finishing up other fall work.

Across the province, crop yields vary greatly, mainly

due to the extremely dry conditions this spring and summer as well as moisture received throughout the growing season. Many areas have reported average to above average yields. Yields for hard red spring wheat are reported as 45 bushels per acre, durum as 39 bushels per acre, oats as 88 bushels per acre, barley as 66 bushels per acre, canola as 38 bushels per acre, peas as 38 bushels per acre and lentils at 1,392 pounds per acre.

SLGA grants provide approximately $1.7 million across the province, including Canora area The provincial government is providing approximately $1.7 million to more than 900 community groups across the province through the Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority’s (SLGA) charitable gaming grant program.

Groups in Canora and area received a total of $5,214 in grant funding, according to a release. Canora Minor Hockey received $3,596, River Ridge Fish and Game received $752, the Canora Hospital Auxiliary received $533,

and the Ukrainian Orthodox Trident Church Camp received $333.

Buchanan and area groups received a total of $439 in grant funding. The Buchanan and District Recreation Board received $256 and Buchanan Black Box Players received $183.

“The charitable gaming grant program provides a financial boost to the fundraising efforts of charitable groups and organizations across the province,” said Gene Makowsky, minister responsible for SLGA in a release.

“Our government is pleased to be able to provide this support as it acknowledges and enhances the good work these groups are doing in their communities.”

Among the grants provided by SLGA this quarter: Yorkton and surrounding area received $122,455; Moose Jaw and surrounding area: $107,479; Humboldt and surrounding area: $87,514; Kindersley and surrounding area: $87,215; and Weyburn/Estevan and surrounding area: $47,359.

Charitable gaming grants are based on 25 per cent of net proceeds raised through licensed charitable gaming activities such as bingos, raffles, breakopen tickets, Texas Hold ’em poker and Monte Carlo events. Groups that conduct licensed charitable gaming activities and events do not have to apply for the charitable gaming grant.

Charitable gaming reports submitted by the groups are used by SLGA to automatically calculate grants.

Canora/Sturgis RCMP Detachment activity report

By Cpl. Dally Holmstrom Canora RCMP Detachment Thefts at Lady Lake Between October 18 and October 25 at Lady Lake an ELDEBO pontoon which had been anchored in the middle of the lake was stolen. Around the same time a yellow 1979 Skidoo Elite and homebuilt trailer were stolen from the Hamlet of Lady Lake. At the time of publishing, it is unknown

if the two thefts are related.

Whomever was responsible for stealing the pontoon boat would have needed a boat to tow it back to shore as well as a trailer to load the boat. The skidoo has a front rollbar and the bottom of both sides are damaged. The left headlight lens and rear right taillight lens are missing. The trailer is made out of checker plate metal and has a bullet hole in it. The lights on the trailer do not work. Anyone with

No Trespassing signs stolen On November 21, Canora RCMP received a report that sometime throughout that morning, no trespassing signs that were situated in the RM of Insinger were stolen. RCMP are asking

for the public’s assistance and are asking the public to contact the Canora RCMP Detachment to notify them if anyone has seen or heard anything that could assist with this investigation. It is believed these no trespassing signs were stolen as a direct result of hunting season. The public can contact the Canora RCMP detachment at 306-563-4700 with any information, or call 310-RCMP.

LOOKING BACK...

A Decade Ago Haly and Dawson Pozniak were aided by their mother, Adria, in lighting the memorial candle as the Holodomor famine was remembered at Rama’s Ukrainian Cultural Event. ***** While the engineers were officially on strike at CN Rail, other train crew members joined them on the picket lines, including: Bob Klutz, Marvin Scott, Dennis Brost, Ken Kalmakoff and Ivan Galandy. ***** Jim Bahnuik of Canora was hired by the RM of Good Lake Council to perform the duties of the RM’s bylaw enforcement officer. ***** Andrew Sedley, mental health promotion co-ordinator for the Sunrise Health Region, went over the results of the 40 Developmental Assets survey of CCS students at a public meeting and indicated it was a “positive starting point” in addressing student development. ***** Darcie Krasowski, a teacher at CJES, led the cheering sections during a Saskatchewan Roughriders pep rally at the school. ***** Cecil Machnee showed Chelsea Wilson and Joe Ratushniak some of the historical artifacts found at the site of Fort Alexandria located 11 miles north of Canora, a large portion of which is on land owned by Ratushniak. ***** Jenny Arnott (nee Zubko), a former Stenen-area resident, won gold and silver medals in badminton at the 2009 World Masters Games in Sydney, Australia.

Quick resolve to rail strike good for unity We need to refocus our attention on practical solutions to existing problems if this country is going to work.

Also helpful would be to not create new, impractical problems for the purposes of scoring political points.

That would seem to be the problem with Alberta Premier Jason Kenney’s notion of exploring a provincewide police force to replace the RCMP, a very expensive answer for a province that purports to be struggling with budgetary and financial constraints of its own.

The country cannot and will not work if we are creating problems faster than we solve the many, many ones that naturally exist.

So perhaps the focus of the federal Liberal government needs to be the 3,200 Canadian National Railway Co. workers that

went on strike at midnight on November 19, a direct threat to oil, potash and grain shipments in this province and across the country.

Of course, one gets the right of conductors and yard operators to walk off their jobs at CN as part of the free and collective bargaining process. Given that a key point of this dispute is the working conditions that are directly related to public safety that’s part of moving any commodity on rail, one might even have a little sympathy for at least the concerns of rail workers that are striking.

That said, one can not overstate how important it is for a company that carries $250-billion worth of goods annually to be working efficiently.

It is especially critical right now because the lack

of pipeline capacity means we are seeing a bottleneck of petroleum and chemical products that account for 20 per cent of all CN annual revenue via moving 180,000 barrels a day. (By comparison, grain and fertilizer account for 16 per cent of CN’s business.)

It is expected that CN Rail will supply 5,650 hopper cars per week throughout November and one cannot understate how important that is.

Last week was

unseasonably warm through much of western Canada, which means now is the time to move grain, oil seeds and pulses before it gets colder.

In December when shipping slows down, the weekly grain car allotment is expected to fall to 4,150 cars a week, a level it is expected to stay at until March.

A prolonged rail strike will only feed into the existing problems.

So one can understand why Premier Scott Moe and his Saskatchewan Party

government feel the strike needs to be addressed immediately, possibly through a recall of Parliament before December 5, to deal with back-to-work legislation.

In fact, it might be better if the Sask. Party government and Agriculture Minister David Marit take other pre-emptive action like seeking more hopper cars in December and January to deal with a backlog in moving what still is a very large crop this year.

Perhaps everyone is still holding out the hope that this railways strike will be resolved in days and weeks instead of weeks and months.

Regardless, all this would seem to be a perfect example where Prime Minister Justin Trudeau could demonstrate good faith in the federation by recognizing the seriousness of this problem and

putting resources to a quick resolution.

One can understand the frustration when so much doesn’t work.

Unhelpful is anger over problems that are then repeated on social media.

Instead, we need to focus on solutions.

Almost as unhelpful are acts that seem more about political statements than solutions to real problems, like Alberta’s exploration of its own province-wide police force to replace the RCMP. It would be more costly and hurt Saskatchewan where Mounties are already trained.

We should be thinking about whether the alternatives are worse.

And we should be focussing on solving problems in this nation that do exist.

That’s how this country works.

Quebec sure is one to talk, when it comes to energy

I’ve seen a lot of TV clips of late, showing Bloc Québécois leader YvesFrançois Blanchet basically trash talking the West, and Alberta in particular. He would support western separation if they wanted a “green state,” for example, but not an “oil state.”

Because oil is bad. He thinks we should stop producing it.

He doesn’t think Quebec g e t s A l b e r t a m o n e y. I t comes from the feds, he says, conveniently forgetting that money for equalization is almost entirely coming from Alberta, and mostly going to Quebec.

Blanchet is not a provincial premier, nor is he in power federally. He’s the leader of a minor party during a minority government, albeit one that has enough seats to hold the balance of power. And he’s driving Alberta Premier Jason Kenney crazy.

Indeed, it’s not a stretch to say Blanchet is driving the entire oilpatch crazy.

It sure must be nice to have a $4 billion surplus this year in Quebec. So much so that they’re opening up the wallet for more social program spending and cheaper child care, beyond what is already ridiculously cheap. In the meantime, Alberta public servants are wondering how many of them will have a job in the future, and when, if ever, they will see a decent raise again?

The federal equalization formula, which excludes renewable resource revenue but includes non-renewable resource revenue, is very rapidly driving a stake into the beating heart of this confederation.

Let’s look at Quebec for

a minute, so blessed with renewable hydroelectricity it thinks it walks on water instead of just damming it.

Ever hear of the Churchill Falls project?

B a c k i n 1 9 6 9 Newfoundland got into financial trouble building a massive hydro dam project in Labrador at Churchill Falls. Hydro-Quebec stepped in and bailed it out, but in doing so, essentially forced the Newfies to sign one of the most lopsided, predatory contracts in Canadian history. It ensures that Quebec gets an enormous amount of hydro electricity at a fixed rate, $2 per megawatt-hour (0.2 cents per kilowatt-hour).

My power bill charges me 14.2 cents per kilowatt hour.

Newfoundland is getting 0.2 cents per kilowatt-hour for its Churchill Falls power.

To put this future price in perspective, in 2004 the average wholesale price of electricity in Ontario was about $52 per MWh, and in 2003 Hydro-Québec received an average of approximately $85 per MWh for its electricity exports.

How much power does that plant generate? More t h a n a l l o f S a s k P o w e r, combined. Churchill Falls produces about 30 million gigawatt-hours of power per year. SaskPower supplies 25.7 gigawatt hours per year, as of 2018-19.

That means Churchill Falls produces more power than every single coal, gas, wind, solar, cogen and hydro plant in all of Saskatchewan, combined. And Quebec is getting a very large chunk of

it, and profiting immensely from it, for basically free.

And despite numerous legal challenges brought forward

by Newfoundland, the Supreme Court has allowed this to continue, to 2041.

Tell me again why renewable resources aren’t considered in the equalization equation? Especially given that Newfoundland, in dire shape right now over its follow up to Churchill Falls, the Muskrat Falls project, is paying into equalization and Quebec is withdrawing?

And then there’s shale gas. Quebec, apparently, has

lots of it. You know, good, clean natural gas with a low carbon footprint? But they haven’t developed any of it.

A few years ago, I interviewed the CEO of a company that drilled 15 wells in Quebec. They had a discovery in 2008 which could have been game-changing, if only they could frac.

But Quebec brought in a de facto moratorium on fracking.

That company had acquired a substantial amount of permits for land, but couldn’t do anything with it.

If they could frac, the CEO figured they could supply a substantial amount of Quebec’s domestic natural gas needs.

But you see, it’s easier to rely on gas from the northeast U.S., these days, and the money taxed from the gas industry in Alberta which goes to support equalization. Why develop

your own resources when you get the money without effort, or risk?

Ye s , A l b e r t a , Saskatchewan, British Columbia, Newfoundland and, to a much lesser extent, Manitoba, are blessed with oil and gas. But other jurisdictions, like Quebec, Manitoba and British Columbia, are blessed with hydropower. In a world where green energy is considered the ultimate goal, shouldn’t they now be considered the have provinces?

Quebec took advantage of Newfoundland in a way that is unconscionable. And with $4 billion surpluses, their “have not” status is a total farce.

Let’s see Quebec have to pay their way in the world, and maybe we’ll see some drilling in the St. Lawrence Va l l e y. T h e n w e ’ l l s e e whose resources are socially unacceptable.

Counting on science for future food and energy needs While I appreciate there are those who have begun to doubt science, I for one am a believer that our future as a planet lies solely with what science can create in the coming years to deal with whatever issues we face.

That will be particularly true in agriculture.

Unless some disaster arises to alter the course, we know the population of earth continues to trend upward.

And there is not even a whisper of discussion that the world needs to address that trend in some meaningful way. So there will be a growing number of mouths to feed. That means a continued need for world food stocks to grow. Food production only occurs by the scientific development of better crop varieties and the development of better cropping systems to enhance yields at an affordable cost of production.

It’s the same thing when it comes to our energy needs.

Science will open doors to producing energy in ways we can barely imagine.

We know, for example, that animal waste creates methane. It is a by-product of intensive production that has been red-flagged as a concern in terms of producing

greenhouse gases, although whether a big dairy herd produces more than the millions of bison which once roamed North America is another column altogether.

Clearly there is a need to deal with methane production from livestock today in the face of concerns over climate change.

So it was with great interest that I read a recent Western Producer article regarding the methane from a 2,900 cow dairy herd in California being collected and ultimately used to power a fleet of trucks.

Using methane to power a truck is not new, but

connecting its production to a cattle farm is at least a rather innovative approach, and one that could reasonably be copied at other farms, or even municipal sewage plants, if the cost can reasonably be recouped.

Of course innovative energy production is popping up all over the place.

There has been work incorporating solar panels into asphalt highways, an idea that on the surface is brilliant in the sense black asphalt attracts heat and the potential, if it works could be immense. Of course it only works if science works out the idea.

Then there is the idea of energy from flowing water in a place that is not exactly on the top of anyone’s list.

Since 2015, the city of Portland has been partnering with Lucid Energy to install electricity-generating turbines in its gravity-fed water pipes.

Again, it’s innovative and something which could be replicated across multiple municipalities.

Challenges will be many as we move forward and we need to be supportive of the scientific community in finding the answers.

Quality versus quantity in our spiritual lives

Two monks were doing their daily rituals. One got on his knees and prayed, “Oh master, I am nothing, I don’t exist, all there is, is You.” The other bowed even lower and said, “Oh great one, I am less than nothing!

I don’t exist and I never did.

You are all there is!”

In the corner a janitor was watching and thinking, “Hmmm, that looks pretty good! I think I’ll try that.”

He spoke, “Oh mighty one, I too am nothing, you are everything.” One monk said with disdain, “Humph! Look who suddenly thinks he’s nothing!”

What is the ingredient of true piety? What is growth in

the love of God and what is not? Fr. Garrigou-Lagrange reminds us that “growth in the spiritual life is not quantitative. It doesn’t mean an increase in size, ‘like a heap of wheat.’” Rather, “spiritual growth is qualitative. The love of God ‘becomes stronger’ and ‘takes deeper root’ in our souls.”

In other words, Garrigou says, “when we advance in the spiritual life, we don’t just love God more, but more deeply.” As regards the number of works we perform, “it is not the amount of our acts that pleases God, but the fervor with which we perform them; not the quantity, but

Applying this to our prayer life, it is not the sheer number of prayers we say that brings us closer to God. It is the fervour with which we pray and the love of God we experience in the

exchange.

A husband and wife strengthen their love by generous actions toward each other, not by a larger number of imperfect activities they may share. Giving your heart to God in prayer is not the same as repeating the Lord’s prayer 100 times.

How do we make this more perfect relationship

with God happen? By recognizing the places where God can meet us. The earth is full of “Gateways to heaven” as we see in Genesis 28:10-22.

Jacob sleeps with his head on a common rock and has a dream.

When he awakes Jacob says, “Surely the Lord is in this place … This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven.” Then he set the rock on a pillar, poured oil on it, and called the place Bethel.

Just as Jacob called this place “God’s house,” we can have a favourite place to meet with God in prayer.

It may be in a quiet part of our home or a spot in nature.

The world is full of places to meet God since God is everywhere.

It is easy to create a place of habitual prayer in our daily lives. It may be the presence of a religious icon, a crucifix or a favourite picture that reminds us of God’s love. Picture Jesus sitting across from you on a chair when you visit with Him. Your gateway to heaven may change as time and your life pass by. Eventually it might be a smaller apartment or even a hospital bed. Jesus will be present. Carl Jung said, “Invited or not, God is present.”

Let our maturing spirituality keep pace.

Saskatchewan recognizes the Holodomor with a special service of Remembrance On November 19, during a special service, Greg Ottenbreit, minister responsible for SaskatchewanUkraine relations, along with members of Saskatchewan’s Ukrainian community, commemorated those who perished during the Ukraine famine in 1932-1933, stated a release.

“The horrendous acts

that took place cannot go unrecognized,” Ottenbreit said. “For years their stories were denied and their stories were lost. Through this service we honour and remember the ones who suffered and the ones who perished. It is through remembrance we learn from the past and their memories live on.”

The memorial service was held in conjunction with Holodomor Memorial We e k , N o v e m b e r 1 8 t o 24, continued the release.

A memorial candle was lit and will remain lit during Holodomor Memorial Week to show unity with those around the world marking the Holodomor genocide.

In 1932-1933, the Soviet Union imposed a man-made famine, killing up to 10 million people. Despite the record grain harvest, crops were confiscated and regulations were imposed preventing people from leaving their communities in search of food. Holodomor means “extermination by hunger” in Ukrainian.

As a permanent reminder of the tragedy, an exact copy of the statue entitled Bitter Memories of Childhood by sculptor Petro Drozdowsky was officially dedicated on the park grounds of Wascana Centre in 2015.

The Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan was the first jurisdiction

in North America to recognize this genocide with the passing of The Ukrainian Famine and Genocide (Holodomor) Memorial Day Act in 2008. International Holodomor Memorial Day is recognized on the fourth Saturday of November and this year falls on November 23.

Learn about fire safety before an emergency strikes Safety is an attitude that requires pre-emptive learning. In an emergency situation, reaction is often needed within a moment or two.

Because of this, it’s not reasonable to expect to have a few moments to brush up on safety tips as an incident is occurring.

Fire extinguishers can be lifesaving tools when used properly and that’s why this National Home Fire Safety Week, November 24 to 30, the Canada Safety Council is sharing tips on effective fire mitigation, said a release.

This includes using the correct type of fire extinguisher and using the right technique to stop a fire from raging out of control.

According to Fire Prevention Canada, fire kills an average of eight people a week in Canada, with 73 per cent of these fatalities being caused by residential fires.

“It’s important to have the right equipment and to be able to act calmly and with purpose in an emergency while knowing that you have the right tool for the job,” said Gareth Jones, president of the Canada Safety Council. “Home fire fatalities are entirely preventable, but knowing how to deal with a fire when it happens is a critical life skill that can help save lives and property.”

A grease fire, a paper fire and an electrical fire will all

react differently. Because of this, fire extinguishers are also designed to react differently. These tools are divided into four classes to better inform one’s decision-making when buying extinguishers for the home: • Class A: Ordinary combustibles including paper, wood, drapes and upholstery.

• Class B: Flammable and combustible liquids including, but not limited to gasoline, oil, grease in a frying pan and paint.

• C la s s C : E le ct r ica l equipment including wires, conductors, overheated fuse boxes and appliances.

• Class D: Metals, including magnesium and sodium.

Typically, these are found in

chemical laboratories.

One extinguisher can feature multiple classes; for example, an extinguisher labelled ABC can reliably put out most types of fires, the release said.

“You should have at least one fire extinguisher in your home, though having two or three can be useful if you need one on hand in an emergency situation,” it continued. “Keep them near fire-prone areas including the kitchen, the fuse box, the garage and anywhere you might have open flames.”

Read the instructions before there is a need to use the extinguisher for any model-specific instructions.

extinguishers operate in the same manner. The process for use can be broken down into an easy mnemonic device: the PASS system.

Pull the pin.

Aim the extinguisher at the base of the fire.

Squeeze or press the handle.

Sweep from side to side at the base of the fire.

Extinguishers are at their most effective when they’re used for small fires. If a fire starts feeding on itself and getting larger, do not attempt to fight it. Ensure that everyone evacuates the house immediately and call the fire department. They will be better equipped to handle a higher magnitude of fire.

There’s no sense in putting one’s life at risk for it.

Remember to have a fire extinguisher inspected and serviced regularly, at least once a year; it’ll be of no

help if it’s non-operational when it’s needed most.

The retailer will be able to provide more information on how to have inspection and maintenance done on an extinguisher.

Lastly, don’t forget to refill the extinguisher every time it is used.

“Don’t wait until it’s empty or near-empty. You don’t want it to run out midfirefight,” the release said.

The Canada Safety Council offers a Safety in Fire Prevention online training course touching on fire prevention in the workplace, including first aid procedures for treating burns.

Fire is a very volatile element that can feed on itself and create full-blown infernos in a short amount of time. Be prepared to act quickly and decisively, making sure to keep oneself and family out of harm’s way.

Canora Composite School News

By Kami Kuhn With the school year already started and students beginning to get in rhythm again, school activities are well underway. At Canora Composite, we are extremely proud of our extracurricular teams, including our volleyball and cross-country teams that have completed successful seasons.

Our cross-country members had a marvelous season, as they brought home the team gold medal at the provincial level. At Canora Composite School, the cross-country coaches are

Leona Kitchen and Thomas Lowes, who expressed their excitement at receiving team gold and having a runner in the top ten individually. This runner was Clay Sleeva, who is currently in Grade 10, and ran a distance of four kilometers in the span of less than 14 minutes.

All of our volleyball teams have had amazing seasons. The junior girls placed fourth at Districts.

S e n i o r g i r l s p u l l e d o ff an amazing feat of placing second in their home tournament, and qualified

for provincials with successful tournaments at the conference and regional levels, placing the Cougars in the top 10 teams in Saskatchewan in the 3A division.

The senior boys team hosted a tournament at CCS and finished a solid third.

Another extracurricular that is underway is the senior drama club, which prepared a play called The Fried Kobassa, a comedy based on a detective who has very little understanding of his profession. The director of this production

was Simone Homeniuk, one of Canora Composite School’s teachers. When asked, “What makes you feel called to drama?” she replied, “[Drama] allows students to be super creative and out of their comfort zone.”

The play was to be performed on November 27 in the setting of a dinner theatre as a fundraiser run by the students going on the Europe Trip of 2020.

On October 16, the school began the “CCS Scares Hunger!” as a part of the race to get as many

“Pumpkin Points” as possible. The combined school brought in 18.5 items per person to donate to the local food bank, which comes to around 4,750 food items.

For anyone who would like to donate to the food bank, there are many places across town, including in a bin at the local Gateway Co-op grocery store. After all of the different activities to get Pumpkin Points, the Grade 11 class managed to keep the “Cougar Cup” yet again.

On October 31, officers of the RCMP and CCS teachers and students

collaborated in the “Safe Streets” effort. The reason for this collaboration was for teachers, students, and RCMP officers to be seen working together and to monitor the streets on Halloween night. That night, there were no crimes committed, but it was still important for this unity to begin. Constable Adam Huber, the leader of this initiative, voiced that he would like this to become an annual event in the town and “show residents that we have a strong and united community.”

Cougars complete “unforgettable season” at volleyball provincials other teams give up disgracefully or play unethically, and inevitably they lose out in the end with nothing to stand for. I don’t see that in the two teams that advanced to the regional playoffs from East Central, Canora and Sturgis/ Norquay.”

At provincials in Assiniboia, Canora team members once again displayed their high standard of conduct on and off the court, said Knight.

“The ability of this team to maintain composure is admirable and it sets the bar high for any team competing at any level of play in any sport,” he said. “Victories are celebrated with respect, and losses are taken with unabashed acceptance and humility, driving the team to reset and take on the next possible play completely recharged. Canora lost to Lanigan, Kipling, Esterhazy, and La Loche in round robin, which placed us at ninth or tenth in the province for 3A girls.”

After strong showings at the conference tournament and regionals, the CCS Cougars senior girls volleyball team competed at provincials in Assiniboia on November 15 and 16.

The Cougars won the conference tournament in Sturgis with a record of two wins and one loss, with a defeat to Kelvington and victories over Creighton and the host Sturgis/Norquay team, said Colin Knight, coach.

The Cougars went on to regional playoffs in Lanigan.

The tournament included losses against Lanigan and Punnichy, but the team secured a top-ten provincial ranking and a berth in provincials by winning the match against Sturgis/Norquay.

“We’ve played Sturgis many times during the season, with both teams taking wins and losses, many times

going the full three sets in the best-of-three matches,” said Knight. “It’s been a great rivalry and I have a lot of respect for the coach and players of that team. Much like them, we strive for a higher standard of competitive play and sportsmanship. I’ve seen

Knight said the team’s graduating seniors will be missed next year.

“I wish Ally Sleeva, Jordelle Lewchuk, Rebekah Thomas, Ashley Stusek, and Megan Barteski the best of luck in the remainder of their Grade 12 year,” he said. “I will remember the digs, the aces, the spikes, the blocks, the six-pack, and the many hilarious moments on and off the court. It was a pleasure to teach these girls back in the middle school years and to return to coaching them in their final year of high school.

To the team as a whole, thank you for an unforgettable season, and I look forward to a

competitive 2020 season.”

Knight said Shelby Lang, assistant coach, was a valuable member of the team behind the scenes throughout the season, serving as the team statistician and looking

after other details as needed.

‘It was a privilege to coach with such a kind-hearted and strong individual,” he said. “I know she’ll make an excellent teacher and a successful coach one day.”

Saskatchewan natives Meagan and Amy perform for appreciative Canora audience

Tw o d o w n - t o - e a r t h young classical musicians originally from Saskatchewan shared their immense talent and passion for their craft with approximately 60 concertgoers at Canora Composite School on November 20.

The show was presented by the Canora Arts Council as part of the 2019/20 Stars for Saskatchewan Concert Series.

Pianist Meagan Milatz and violinist Amy Hillis, also known as Meagan and Amy, performed a seamless blend of classical works by Canadian and international composers in what Hillis described as “many ingredients in this lovely Canadian cake we are baking tonight.

We love to share music by Canadians whose experiences are similar to ours.

The engaging duo opened the performance with Sonata for Violin and Piano by André Mathieu, a 20 th century composer and pianist from Montreal.

“Mathieu wrote music in the style of the old Hollywood movie soundtrack,” said Meagan and Amy. “It’s slightly jazzy and very much ‘wearing your heart on your sleeve’ type of music.”

The duo also performed Alba by Jocelyn Morlock, who was born in Winnipeg and now lives in Vancouver.

Alba was commissioned for Meagan and Amy’s current Canadian tour, and like much of Morlock’s music, it was influenced by Mozart.

Alb is the Spanish word for “dawn.”

“The piece opens quietly and then blooms,” said Hillis. “Being from Saskatchewan, for us it’s a great reminder of a prairie sunrise. And just like us, Jocelyn is a prairie girl.”

Meagan and Amy performed Preludes, Op. 34

by Dmitri Shostakovich, a 20th Century Russian pianist and composer. They said they enjoy performing the music of Shostakovich for its unpredictability.

“It’s really musical comedy,” they said. “His music often makes people laugh through misdirection. Often his pieces are written in such a way that encourages listeners to expect one thing, and he ends up writing something completely unexpected.”

The Canora performance included Sonata No. 1

by David L. McIntyre, a composer and pianist who was born in Saskatoon and now lives in Regina, and was strongly influenced by Shostakovich.

“McIntyre’s music is

noble and expansive,” said Milatz. “It’s written with the kind of nobility that makes us proud of who we are. It’s like being wrapped up in a big blanket with a very strong sense of community, quite appropriate for Saskatchewan.”

The final piece in the Meagan and Amy performance was Sonata No. I by Gabriel Fauré, a 19 th and 20th century French pianist, organist and composer.

“His music reminds us of the ocean,” the duo explained. “Ranging from the low notes to the high notes, it’s filled with massive waves of sound.”

Meagan and Amy are in the middle of an extensive Canadian tour with stops in all 13 provinces and territories. It began earlier in fall and runs through the spring of 2020.

“It’s really all about celebrating Canadian classical music,” they said.

The duo said they thoroughly enjoyed the energy of the audience throughout the Canora concert.

“We love it when we can hear audible reactions from the audience, hearing people gasp or laugh after a piece finishes is especially rewarding,” said Hillis. “It was clear to us as performers and stewards of this repertoire by Canadian composers that the Canora listeners could relate to these pieces and that they found these pieces powerful

and moving.” “ We k n o w a c o n c e r t is going well when there is complete silence at the end of a piece and we can sense that the audience is completely with us,” added Milatz. “Silence can be so powerful.”

Both performers began pursuing musical excellence at an early age.

Milatz grew up on a farm near Stoughton with other family members who also played piano. In a situation all too familiar to rural Saskatchewan, she went to elementary school in Griffin (population 111 in the most recent census) until that school closed. She later went to high school in nearby Weyburn. Weyburn was important to her development as a musician, being the home of Cherith A l e x a n d e r, w h o t a u g h t Milatz piano for 13 years and “was definitely one of my most important musical influences.”

Hillis was born and raised in Regina and became interested in music, and specifically the violin, at a young age.

“It was originally my parents’ idea, but I found I loved playing music with other people,” she recalled.

Hillis later played with the Regina Symphony and the National Youth Orchestra of Canada, all of which “made me want to pursue music as a career.”

Pianist Meagan Milatz and violinist Amy Hillis performed their passionate interpretation of classical music in concert at Canora Composite School on November 20. Gillian Rice of Canora (partially hidden) served as page turner. studied music at McGill University in Montreal, which is where they first met and where each achieved undergraduate and graduate degrees in music.

Hillis also studied at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music where she achieved her Masters degree.

Hillis points to Denise Lupien, her instructor at McGill, as one of her biggest musical influences.

After hearing them play

together, Lupien and other McGill instructors encouraged them to pursue a longterm musical partnership, which has been ongoing since 2011.

Hillis and Milatz agree that being from Saskatchewan probably plays a role in their compatibility.

“Neither of us are very high maintenance,” said Milatz.

“We seem to have the

same priorities and are willing to play everywhere from the big concert halls to intimate living rooms order to get classical music into as many different communities as possible,” added Hillis.

Meagan and Amy bring musical passion to Canora

The answers received seemed like a good indication of the diversity of the Saskatchewan music scene, including: Ron Kalmakoff of Canora, Seven Levels of Canora, Katie Miller of Esterhazy and Connie Kaldor of Regina.

Meagan and Amy have performed as far away as Paris, France, where they played the music of Mathieu for an audience eager to hear Quebecois music, and how it compares with the works of composers from France.

The two young performers have some advice for elementary or high school aged students who are interested in pursuing a career in music, classical or otherwise.

“Listen to as much of the type of music you enjoy as possible. The Internet is a great resource. Music can inspire you, much more

than thinking about what your teacher told you,” said Hillis.

“Be willing to take risks,” added Milatz. “Don’t be afraid to go with your gut.”

The resulting adverse growing conditions drive up the cost of forage and force producers to look at alternative feed and management options for winter, including screenings, salvage crops and use of

lower-quality forages such as straw.

Winter rations will utilize a variety of alternative feed sources. High forage prices and reduced supply will force the use of cereal grains, screenings and other by-products such as canola meal and dried distiller grains to boost protein and energy levels. Increasing the protein provides an enriched opportunity for rumen bacteria to be more efficient in breaking down and degrading forage fibre.

It is more important than ever to provide adequate mineral and vitamin supplements to young females (replacements or first-time mothers) or when livestock are consuming poor-quality feeds during the high-production periods of late trimester

and lactation, growth during backgrounding and finishing, and flushing for breeding.

Yo u h a v e t o b e a b i t more creative to manage your feeding programs when faced with a dry pasture, grazing and haying seasons, and continually explore new options. Protein and energy supplementation will be essential if feed stocks are low or if you are utilizing poor-quality forages as the base of your winter rations. Be aware of mineral content in salvage crops to prevent issues with sulphate toxicity and/or mineral deficiencies.

Preeceville Midget hockey team off to strong start with Canora players The Preeceville Midgets are looking pretty good, stated Kirby Pankratz, head coach.

“We lost seven players from last year due to graduating or overage, gained three players that moved up from bantam and added one new player. That puts our numbers at 15 skaters and one goaltender,” he said.

The team is composed of

players from Preeceville, Sturgis, Canora, Kamsack, and Margo.

Team members for the 2019-2020 hockey season are: Elijah Hort, Carter Masley, Shae Peterson, Seth Hort, Skylar Ryczak, and Brett Smith, all of Sturgis; Todd Pankratz, Trever Geistlinger, Jakob Turchinetz and Dylan Wiwcharuk, all of Preeceville; Toby Olynyk, Grady Wolowski

and Maxwell Mydonick, all of Canora; Shelby Wallin of Margo and Ryan Bear and Ashton Watson, both of Kamsack.

Joining Pankratz on the coaching staff are: Conrad Peterson, Colby Wolowski, Sheldon Wallin, and Skylar Wallin.

“Our rink start-up was maybe a touch behind what it normally has been, so we didn’t get as much

practice as we normally would like before games,” said Pankratz.

“November 6 was our first test in Yorkton against the Snap On Terriers, and we took the win with a surprising 17 to 2 score. I think with few new guys into our lineup and the familiarity of our core group it all came together for them fairly quickly,” he stated.

The Pats home opener was

November 12 against Melville Chiefs where they let a quick 2 to 0 lead slip and ended up in a 2 to 2 tie.

“It was unfortunate since we dominated the play 45 to 19 in shots in a fairly physical game, but that’s hockey sometimes. We’ll work on burying those chances in practice and we should be fine,” said Pankratz.

“Fine” does not always mean that everything is fine

By Kaare Askildt “Fine” is a word that can mean a variety of things.

First and foremost, it is an adjective, and when the word is spoken by a female who is putting a special emphasis on it, the male recipient of the word “fine” should better head for the hills. Because it isn’t fine at all, in fact it is everything but fine. On the other hand, when a man says “fine,” there is no danger because he really means that it is OK. Ole and Sven were enjoying their Saturday afternoon at the Bottoms Up Bar, sipping on Akevitt chased with a beer.

“I really don’t understand Lena,” said Ole. “I asked her if I could have a tattoo, and she said to me, fine, have a tattoo! The next thing I know she’s moaning and complaining about the bagpipers tuning up in the back yard!”

They had a good laugh, and then Sven said, “Your wife Lena told me you’ve aged like fine wine.”

“What did she say?” asked Ole. “She said you’ve become more complex and more flavoursome with increased sweetness,” said NOTICES / NOMINATIONS

“Yeah, well, she also said that you’ve acquired more body,” added Sven.

Hans and Kari were having some marital problems.

A Sticky Note was left on the fridge by Hans’ wife that said this is not working! Hans opened the fridge door and the light came on.

He added to the sticky note that the door works just fine.

The word “fine” is also an adverb, as in “he barely escaped her wrath with a margin so fine.”

Truls planned to sneak out and play poker with the boys, but he had not intended to make his getaway “this fine.” As a noun it means a financial penalty.

Perhaps it was a female that came up with that noun.

Knut called home. His hands were shaking and in a trembling voice he said, “Honey, I’m in the hospital, but don’t worry because I’m fine.”

After a long silence that seemed to last forever, Emma replied, “You must stop this nonsense. You’ve been a doctor for five years now!”

One fine sunny day a rabbit came out of her hole in the ground to enjoy the fine weather. The day was very nice, and she enjoyed it so much that she became careless and a fox snuck up behind her and caught her.

“I’m going to eat you for lunch,” said the fox.

“Wait,” implored the rabbit, “you should wait at least a few days.”

“Oh yeah? Why should I wait?” asked the fox. “ We l l I ’ m j u s t f i n ishing my thesis on The Superiority of Rabbits over Foxes and Wolves,” explained the rabbit.

“Are you crazy?” wondered the fox. “I should eat you right now. Everybody knows that a fox will always win over a rabbit!”

“Not really, not according to my research anyway,” replied the rabbit. “If you like, you can come into my abode and read it for yourself. If you are not convinced, you can go ahead and have me for lunch.”

“You really are crazy,” said the fox.

But since the fox was curious and had nothing to lose, he went with the rabbit. The fox never came back out.

A few days later the rabbit was again taking a break from writing and sure enough, a wolf came out of the bushes and was ready to eat the rabbit.

“Wait, wait, you can’t eat me right now!” yelled the rabbit.

“And why would that be, my furry appetizer?” asked the wolf.

“I’m almost finished writing my thesis on The Superiority of Rabbits over Foxes and Wolves.”

The wolf laughed so hard that he almost lost his grip on the rabbit.

“Maybe I shouldn’t eat you; you really are sick, sick in the head,” said the w o l f . “ Yo u m i g h t h a v e something contagious.”

“Come and read my thesis for yourself,” said the rabbit. “You can eat me afterwards if you disagree with my conclusions.”

So, the wolf went down into the rabbit’s hole, and never came back out.

The rabbit finished her thesis and was out celebrating in the local lettuce patch. Another rabbit came along and asked, “What’s u p s i s ? Yo u s e e m v e r y happy.”

“Yup, I just finished my thesis,” replied the rabbit.

“Congratulations,” said the other rabbit, “what’s it about?”

“The Superiority of Rabbits over Foxes and Wolves,” said the rabbit.

“Are you sure?” queried the other rabbit, “that doesn’t sound right.”

“Oh yes, come and read it for yourself,” said the rabbit.

So together they went down into the rabbit’s hole.

As they entered, the friend saw the typical graduate’s study, albeit a rather messy one after writing a thesis.

The computer with the controversial work on it was in one corner. To the right was a pile of fox bones, on the left were the wolf bones.

In the middle was a large well-fed lion.

The moral of the story: The title, the subject and the research for your thesis doesn’t matter. All that matters are who your advisor is.

Some generous and outof-date estimates say that Canada has roughly 25 per cent of its native prairie grassland remaining, the rest of it lost to row-crop

agriculture, though urban sprawl is responsible for a small portion of the damage too.

Those who would like to resist restrictions on plowing will insist that no one plows much prairie anymore, but the data shows otherwise.

It’s been reported that from 1990 to 2015, Saskatchewan alone lost more than 3.3 million acres (1, 335,462 hectares) of native grassland. In the U.S., the Nature Conservancy estimates that over the past two-anda-half decades the nation has lost 25 million acres of grassland.

While Canada has, in recent years, taken important

steps to protect 12 per cent of boreal forest, the nation’s grasslands have seen protection stripped away over the same period, with the closure of the federal Community Pastures Program, which, until 2012, protected 920,000 hectares (over 2.25 million acres) of land.

To d a y, a c c o r d i n g t o Nature Canada, less than one per cent of the native grassland in Saskatchewan and Alberta enjoys any official protection. It’s little wonder that the International Union for the Conservation of Nature declared temperate grasslands to be the least protected and most

endangered ecosystem on the planet.

If we fail to grant grassland places the same value as we assign to alpine, coastal or forested landscapes, it’s partly because we assume it is as easy to restore as it is to destroy. In fact, the complex plant and soil biota communities in old-growth prairie are among the most difficult natural habitats to restore.

Once prairie is plowed, whether it’s seeded to tame hay or left to re-vegetate, the land quickly becomes colonized by a few dominant European grasses in a simplified ecosystem unsuitable for all but the most adaptive prairie wildlife species.

“While getting an extended term loan to help finance a vehicle over a period of seven or eight years may seem like a good idea, having these loans can result in negative equity when a consumer wants to trade in their vehicle prior to paying the loan off,” said Denny Huyghebaert, FCAA deputy director of consumer protection. “We have seen situations where a consumer has traded in their old vehicle for a $70,000 new truck, but due to the debt still owing on their previous vehicle, the consumer actually had to pay $110,000 to acquire the new truck.”

How to Avoid Negative Equity: • Consider a shorter term loan to minimize the possibility of being in a negative equity position.

• Make a sizeable cash

down payment when purchasing the vehicle.

• Pay off existing vehicle loans to avoid rolling negative equity forward into a new vehicle purchase.

Plans announced for CP Holiday Train in Yorkton Devin Wilger Yorkton This Week The Christmas season calls for good cheer, and CP Rail and the City of Yorkton are bringing a train filled with it. The CP Holiday Train is coming to the city on December 4, and bringing with it a major boost to the local Salvation Army Food Bank.

The star of the show is naturally the Holiday Train itself, which will roll into the city at 12:05 p.m., with a free concert performance by Madeline Merlo and Scott Helman. It will be parked at Livingstone St. and 4th Ave. South for the concert.

In Yorkton, there will be events surrounding the train’s arrival. Hot dogs and hot chocolate will be available at the event. The Salvation Army will be cooking hot dogs with the help of YBID and Save-On Foods. Connected to the train’s overall goal of helping out food banks across the country, attendees will be encouraged to bring a donation of food to the food bank to the concert. Yorkton Hyundai will be handling all transportation for food donations as part of their Pack the Palisade food drive.

They hope that the vehicles will be full by the end of the

day. Cloud Nine Coaches will handle transportation of sponsors and contest winners to Bredenbury to ride the train. “Without the community support, we could not do this,� said Randy Goulden with Tourism Yorkton.

The festivities will continue at the Godfrey Dean Art Gallery with a film presentation by the Yorkton Film Festival, playing the Rocky Mountain Express at 2:30 p.m. Goulden said it’s a chance to come in, warm up, and learn a bit about the history of rail in Canada.

Goulden said that the best part of the CP Holiday Train is that it brings people to downtown Yorkton, shopping at local businesses, and seeing all of the things the city has to offer.

The train stopped in the city for the first time in 2017, and Goulden said that it was a challenge to get it to make a Yorkton stop and on the two-year cycle. The problem? There is not actually a railway siding in the city, making it difficult to stop here. It also disrupts rail traffic in the area, as it not only takes up the CP Rail line, but also blocks the CN line when in town.

Rama Commemorates the Holodomor

On November 23 at Saints Peter and Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church at Rama, the Rama Golden Jets invited

Rev. Joakim Rac to share his thoughts on the Holodomor famine following the Divine Liturgy.

Pat and Ron Leniuk lit the memorial candle in commemoration of the Holodomor famine.

Rev. Rac thoroughly described the stages of development of the genocide policy and the years that led up to this horrific famine.

The central figure of the famine was Joseph Stalin, who was born in Gori, Georgia in the Russian Empire and was General secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union from 1922 to 1952.

“He was a ruthless man who was determined to industrialize the country very quickly, thus creating an artificial famine,” said Rac. “This meant attacking the farmers by taking most of their land and from whatever few acres were left, he imposed on them a quota that they had to fulfill by giving the required number of bushels to the State.

“The quotas became bigger and bigger and due to the

drought years of the 1930s, they could no longer fulfill their quotas and thus were forced to give something they never had. The Soviet authorities confiscated everything and whoever resisted was sent to the labor camps in Siberia.” Rac mentioned that the famine didn’t discriminate nationalities as it affected not only Ukrainians, but also the Polish, Hungarians, Russians and others who starved and died.

“So we are remembering the millions of victims today and praying for them as well as praying for our own country to develop good policies and good government to promote justice and peace throughout the world.

“If there is no God, the worst possible human takes over and becomes God for everyone,” he concluded.

The commemoration continued with the lighting of the Holodomor candle by Ron and Pat Leniuk, members of the Rama Golden Jets.

At the Holodomor commemoration in Rama on November 23, Rev Joakim Rac spoke regarding the development of the genocide policy and the stages leading up to the famine.

Fund to request funding for various rural capital projects to enhance the lives of residences or contribute to sustainability, and this year the Buchanan Skating Rink was among the winning recipients, said Dreger. The money is to be used to improve the ice surface and interior flooring of the rink.

In 2019 of the 1,600 applications received, 94 communities across Canada were selected with $1.5 million being distributed. Over the past 16 years the FCC AgriSpirit Fund has supported 1,263 projects across Canada.

The next application process begins March 1, 2020.
