Archery club hosts successful annual 3-D shoot The Assiniboine River Archery Club held its 26th annual 3-D shoot August 10 and 11 at the Dale and Chad Swetlishnoff farm near Canora.

A total of 172 archers took part in the successful t w o - d a y e v e n t i n n e a rideal weather, said Desiree Owchar, Club president.

“There was no strong wind or extreme heat and t h e r a i n s t a y e d a w a y, ” Owchar reported.

She said there was positive feedback from the competitors about the shooting conditions on the course.

“They all said it was a great course with beautiful scenery,” said Owchar.

“This location works so well because it makes it feel

so realistic, a setting where some of these animals would be found in nature.

It’s a safe location and can host two beautifully set courses.”

Course A (domestic animals) has 20 targets of animals commonly found in Canada, while the 20 targets on the B course (exotic animals) are native to other countries. Scores are kept over the two days of the competition, and then added together for an aggregate total.

In addition to Canora, archers taking part in the competition came from locations across the province, including Regina, Watson, Lintlaw, Yorkton and Whitewood.

Out-of-province visitors came from as far away as S can d ia, A lta. ( n e ar Brooks).

Prior to the beginning of the competition on August 10, Owchar said there was some unplanned excitement on the course.

“We discovered a bear on Thursday evening when my husband Mike and our boys Michael and Andrew were on the exotic animals course,” she recalled.

“There were several targets that were knocked over and moved around. They could not locate the velociraptor head or the red frog on Thursday but they were recovered on Friday, the day before the start of the Continued on Page 7

Class of 1972 hosts Canora Pensioners Prom

The 2019 Canora Pensioners Prom was hosted by the Class of 1972 on August 9 and 10. A total of 54 persons registered for the weekend. Of the registrants, 30 were graduates of the Class of 1972, while the other registrants were graduates of other years and spouses and partners of graduates, said Randy

Kachur, a member of the organizing committee.

All events were held at the Canora Golf and Country Club, with the exception of a tour of Canora Composite School.

On August 9 registration was combined with a meet-and-greet evening. On the menu was a traditional Canora meal of perogies

and sausage, said Kachur.

“Those in attendance seemed genuinely surprised and pleased to see their former classmates, some of whom they had not seen since either graduation in June, 1972 or a Class of 1972 reunion held in summer, 1982,” he said.

On the following day, activities included golf at the

Canora Golf and Country Club and a tour of the Canora Composite School.

Both were well attended, said Kachur. The Saturday meal was a choice of steak or chicken, with all the trimmings.

“An informal program was presented,” he said.

“Awards were given out to the first person to register

for the event, the last person to register, the persons from furthest away, the person with the most creative email address and a fashionably late award.”

The persons in attendance now reside in all four western Canada provinces, said Kachur.

All those who attended said they were very pleased

with the food and beverage service provided by Donna Rock and staff at the Canora Golf and Country Club.

The organizing committee for the 2019 edition of Pensioners Prom consisted of: Gail Ostafie, Linda McInnis, Donna Looyenga, Darlene Kitchen and Kachur.

Canora students to welcome two new teachers, while one new teacher has been hired at Invermay School Returning to classrooms on September 3, Canora students will be greeting two teachers new to local schools, while one new teacher has been hired at Invermay School.

Although the students of Good Spirit School Division return to class on September 3, administrative assistants and library technicians will be at work beginning August 23. The remainder of the staff, including teachers, start on August 27, except for educational assistants (EAs),

who begin on August 28.

At Canora Composite School (CCS), the two new teachers are Rebecca Gibbs and Erin Gras. Cindy Smith and Kim Eiteneier return as CCS principal and vice-principal, respectively. The returning teachers are: Curtis Baillie, Koren (nee Pitkethly) Baillie. Paul Geerdts, Andrew Hoffman, Simone Homeniuk, Leona Kitchen, Colin Knight, Thomas Lowes, Dustin Nielsen, Kelly Perepeluk-Nieckar, Nathan Seghers, Jennifer

Sleeva, Cindy Sznerch and Karen Wilgosh.

Educational assistants are: Michelle Anaka, Linda Dyck, Lorraine Gress, Debra Hort and Masako Knight. Jennifer Bisschop is the library technician.

Melodie Berehula, Ken Keys and Max Zbitniff are the caretakers.

At the Canora Junior Elementary School (CJES), Amy Galiz is new to the staff as an educational assistant.

Rod Steciuk returns as CJES principal, while

returning teachers are: Alexandria Blatter, PattiJo Donovan, Rhonda Exner, Lisa Fast, Lesley Miles, Heather Netzel, Lindsey Ostafie, Jennifer Prychak, Scott Vaughan and Darla Zayshley.

Kim Hladun is the administrative assistant and Bev Hadubiak is the library technician. In addition to Galiz, the EAs are: Bev Hadubiak, Shirley Kulcheski and Lisa St. Mars.

At Invermay School the only new teacher is

Crop Report for the period August 6 to August 12 Harvest operations are just starting in the east-central region.

There are reports of winter cereal crops that are swathed and ready to straight-cut as well as pulse crops being desiccated, according to Saskatchewan Agriculture’s weekly report. General harvest in the region is expected in the coming weeks.

Some areas in the region received rainfall last

week that ranged from trace amounts to 72 mm in the Lumsden area. The Rocanville area reported 22 mm, the Lipton area 32 mm, the Ituna area up to 38 mm, the Elfros area 5 mm, the Earl Grey area 20 mm, the Holdfast area 19 mm and the Kenaston area 16 mm. The Ituna area has received the most precipitation since April 1 (333 mm). The rainfall may cause downgrading and

quality issues in the pulse crops. However, the rainfall was beneficial to many pastures and hay land and lateseeded crops in the region.

Cropland topsoil moisture improved with the rainfall.

Across the region, cropland topsoil moisture is rated as 77 per cent adequate, 21 per cent short and two per cent very short. Hay land and pasture topsoil moisture is rated as 63 per cent adequate, 35 per cent short and two per cent very short for the reporting period.

The main sources of crop damage this week were strong winds and a lack of moisture.

Producers are getting equipment prepared for harvest and also hauling grain and bales, concluded the report.

Many crops are ripening across the region and earlier fields are ready or almost ready for harvest to begin.

Stenen little boy reunited with his quad that was previously stolen

The Anaka family of Stenen had a pleasant surprise when they woke up on the morning of August 15 to see their child’s quad and some tools had been returned after being stolen from their farm near Stenen.

“When my husband Jason woke up to go to work he discovered the missing quad in our backyard,” said Stacy Anaka.

“My six-year-old son O l i v e r, w h o w a s a w a y visiting family when the quad was stolen, was very devastated to learn that it

had been stolen. The quad was first purchased for our first son over six years ago and had been passed down in our family. It was to be my son’s quad to keep up and ride with his brothers. Needless to say when he saw that it had been returned he was very overwhelmed with emotion. He told me that he cried happy tears,” she said.

The family is very thankful to the person or persons who brought it back.

“We had lots of tips with people helping to keep on the look-out for it. My son

Oliver had told me before the quad was retuned that looking at his helmet made him sad and miss his quad.

The look on his face when he came around the corner of the house to see his returned quad was priceless.

He stated that he could just cry happy tears and we are very grateful for the return of his quad,” concluded Anaka.

The family believes that the person or persons who returned it were not directly involved in the theft as the items were returned directly to their home in Stenen

According to an RCMP release, on August 15 the victims of this crime had their child’s 50cc Arctic Cat quad along with some tools including an air compressor and battery charger returned to their back yard at Stenen. Several tools are still missing but the RCMP along with the victim’s family would like to thank everyone for sharing this information which perhaps led to the return of the property by putting pressure on the suspects, stated Cpl. Dallyn Holmstrom of the Canora-Sturgis RCMP. “I can say it is not very often we get to share news of the safe return of stolen property so I’m glad I get to send this out. If anyone has any new knowledge of this property being stolen or returned please contact the Canora - Sturgis RCMP,” concluded Holmstrom.

events and Monte Carlo events are among the charitable gaming activities eligible to receive a grant.

RCMP seeking assistance in rim and tire theft Between August 8 at 9 p.m. and August 9 at 7 a.m. four rims and tires were stolen off a 2009 Buick Allure in Preeceville, according to an RCMP release.

The vehicle was parked in the parking lot at the Assiniboine Valley Manor retirement home located at 234 Fourth Street NE in Preeceville. The thief stole all four tires and rims off the car and left the car sitting on the ground in

Moe, Goodale fight petty pre-election politics Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe is right to suggest the federal government and long-time Liberal MP Ralph Goodale may be playing election politics with the infrastructure money.

Unfortunately, that may be all Moe and the Saskatchewan Party are right about.

What they are most wrong about is to somehow imply the age-old practice of ward-healing in advance of an election vote is something that was invented by the Liberals.

New Democrat. Conservative. Liberal. And, yes, even Moe’s Sask. Party government are guilty of this.

The latest in this summer saga between Ottawa and the province over millions in federal infrastructure dollars now comes down to petty political bickering over the funding of two pools in Regina.

Earlier, Moe and his government threatened to withhold its approval of federal funding over cultural and sports projects, the Gordie Howe Bowl and the Shakespeare on the Saskatchewan festival in Saskatoon and the Globe Theatre in Regina.

What was at issue, at least according to the Sask. Party government, was that $300 million of available federal infrastructure funds were specifically designated for transit projects.

One gets that in less urbanized Saskatchewan, money for city buses may be less of a need or a priority.

But such disagreements are normally resolved in closeddoor discussions between the two levels of government. That Moe and the Sask. Party immediately elevated this to a public fight on social media with accusations spiced with heavy

political overtones suggests something much more was in play.

And that “something” is pre-election politics, something that Moe is as guilty of playing as much (or perhaps even more) than Goodale.

Just as the fight over the three projects seemed to be resolved through the Sask. Party government’s recent approval, Moe levelled political accusations why the federal government was focussing on funding two outdoor swimming pools in Goodale’s Regina-Wascana riding.

“This is an infrastructure fund that is put forward to ensure that we can move forward on provincial priorities,” Moe said last week.

“This is not Ralph Goodale’s re-election fund.”

This quickly drew the ire of the normally unflappable Goodale who accused Moe of “trying very hard to be unpleasant.”

The Regina-Wascana MP noted that the support for the repair of the inner city pools mostly serving low-income kids was requested by the city and no one will mistake Regina Mayor Michael Fougere for a Liberal partisan.

“The provincial government has said that those kids are a lesser priority than a landfill or a garage dump somewhere else,” Goodale said.

Moreover, while Moe said he found it odd that a pool in Goodale’s riding would be “singled out of 400 applications”, Goodale countered that 21 of the 25 projects Moe’s government submitted for funding happened to be Saskatchewan Party ridings.

“So what do you read in that?” Goodale asked. “Surely that’s not partisan.”

Of the 25 projects, 13 have already been approved by Ottawa.

So, while Moe may be right that there may be some level of pre-election politics in play, he isn’t exactly providing the whole picture.

That whole picture includes the fact that support of other projects are being funded and that, while the pools may be in Goodale’s riding, funding for these necessary projects is a legitimate request supported by the city.

Second, you would be hard-pressed to ever find a letter from your government MP or MLA that doesn’t highlight the tax dollars spent in your riding on your behalf.

By Moe’s own assertion, this, too, should be considered taxpayers funding re-elections.

It’s also hard to ignore that two of Moe’s own caucus members are now running as federal Conservative candidates against the Liberals.

There’s pre-election politics here, a lot of politics.

But as much of it is coming from Moe as it is coming from Goodale.

Local veterinarian warns of outbreak of canine parvovirus in the area This area is currently experiencing an outbreak of canine parvovirus. We have treated nine affected dogs in the last ten days.

We are also aware of additional cases where veterinary care has not been sought.

Dogs become infected with parvovirus through contact with the stool of

an infected dog or a contaminated environment (including things like shoes, clothing or hands).

The virus is very hardy and remains infective in the environment for decades.

Puppies and seniors are most susceptible to parvovirus infections, but dogs of any age may be affected. Parvovirus causes

severe and often bloody diarrhea and vomiting.

Infected animals rapidly dehydrate, and severe cases progress to shock and death. Fatalities occur mostly in puppies less than 12 weeks old.

Occasionally parvovirus attacks the heart muscle and can cause sudden death. A vaccine

is available for prevention of canine parvovirus infection. Puppies should receive their first vaccination at 6 weeks of age, and receive two boosters at monthly intervals thereafter. All dogs should be revaccinated annually.

Mothers should be vaccinated before breeding to protect newborn puppies.

Early hospitalization and fluid therapy can be effective in treating parvovirus.

All dog owners are advised to ensure that their pets have received a parvovirus vaccination within the last twelve months.

Puppies are not adequately protected unless they have received their boosters as well as their primary

vaccination.

Any dog exhibiting signs of vomiting or diarrhea should seek immediate treatment by a licensed veterinarian.

Turn left at the cow One of these days, number one daughter will return from summer camp and we will resume driver training.

I think we’re getting to the point where we move from driving training to navigation. As in, we’re soon going to start doing some out-of-town trips, of increasing length.

And this got me thinking, when or should I introduce GPS navigation? Or do we go old school, like when I, whom am old, was in school, using a paper map? Do we start with the map?

I was thinking this over the long weekend as we made our way about Winnipeg and then from Steinbach to the cabin, and from the cabin to Estevan.

My 2011 Ford Expedition has an integrated GPS navigation system built into the dashboard. By 2011, one would think the technology was sufficiently mature. And perhaps a 2019 model, which I surely cannot afford, is mature. But my experiences over the weekend reinforced this one notion: “Do not trust your GPS. Take it under advisement, only.”

First scenario: getting from the hotel north of Polo Park out to Steinbach.

You would think, with major arteries like Portage Avenue running through the heart of Winnipeg, the navigation system would tell me to go south a couple blocks, get on Portage, and then onto the main drag leading out to Highway No. 1. You would think. But the navigation system did not think so. It instead directed me down an increasingly minor street until I was almost downtown, then some other side streets, before passing the Manitoba Legislature and then the train station and the way out.

Okay, that wasn’t too bad.

Scenario 2: Steinbach to Sandy Lake.

Leaving our friends’ place in Steinbach, for giggles I told the navigation system to plot our way to the cabin at Sandy Lake, an hour north of Brandon. This time, instead

of telling me to hit the Winnipeg Perimeter Highway around the city, and thus avoid the city, it instead instructed me to pass right through the city centre, including down the very Portage Avenue I had wanted before.

Thankfully, it was Sunday evening, there was little traffic, and I knew well enough to take the Perimeter, which I did.

But then we decided we wanted to take the TransCanada to Brandon, instead of turning onto the Yellowhead. For about 20 kilometres, the navigation system kept insisting we either turn around and go back to the Yellowhead turnoff, or turn down any north-bound road to go to the Yellowhead, instead of staying on the TransCanada.

Scenario 3: Virden to Estevan.

There are roughly six ways to go from Virden to Estevan, and five of them are within just a few kilometres in length. Because I like to see what’s going on in the countryside in this area of the oilpatch, we routinely change it up and take different routes. But I would have never thought that crossing an international border, twice, and travelling through northern North Dakota would constitute a seventh.

Yet that was what the navigation system insisted we do. As we progressed south of Virden, it kept telling us to proceed south, across the U.S. border at Coulter,

Manitoba, to Renville, North Dakota. Then it wanted us to follow North Dakota Route No. 5 towards Lignite, then cross back into Canada at North Portal.

When I turned on Manitoba Highway No. 3 to Pierson (which becomes Saskatchewan Highway No. 18), the navigation system kept telling me to turn south, to cross the U.S. border. I should note that by this late in the evening, the border crossings were likely closed, too. If you followed its suggested route, you would get to a closed gate, at night. Once we crossed the Saskatchewan border, it finally recognized we were on a straight line route to Estevan, and told us to go straight.

I will say that the 2011 Ford Expedition’s navigation system is better than the 2008 Garmin GPS I used previously. If you loaded my aftermarket oilpatch map, which included every gravel road in the patch, it would constantly tell you to take gravel roads to go anywhere instead of sticking to highways.

Alternatively, one could use the various map apps in your phone. But this presupposes that you are in an area with sufficient cellular coverage. As I’ve squawked about in a never-ending fashion, I get better cell coverage in any southeast Saskatchewan pasture than I do in small town Manitoba or any of its highways, with the exception of those on Highway No. 1. And then there’s the whole issue of the legality of touching or holding a phone while driving. As in, big fine, no dice.

So where are we when it comes to teaching navigation?

Maps, maps, maps. Learn the terrain. Learn to watch for signs and landmarks. Know which way you are going.

Only after this is truly mastered can one ever really consider using a GPS. Even then, use it to figure out where you are, and beware of how it tells you where to go.

That’s just in case it tells you, “Turn left at the cow.”

Farmers eagerly looking forward to harvest You can almost feel the anticipation in the air.

It is the time of year when grain and oilseed producers begin to become rather antsy for the start of the fall harvest.

Recent road trips to Sandy Beach on Good Spirit Lake for a disc golf tournament, and a run to Regina for East Indian food, were good opportunities to take note of the state of crops.

While there were no swathers in the fields, a lot of crops were beginning to show the familiar golden tinge that denotes a crop is ripening so that it may soon be harvested.

The trips were 10 days ago from when this article will see print, and some of the crops were likely going down in short order, marking the start of harvest.

It is always a time that excites farmers, the point when they feel they will be able to harvest the crop and see a return on what is now a substantial investment in every acre planted.

It is also a time, as I recall from my youth, of uncertainty

for producers. No one can be sure what sort of production a field might yield on a given year until the combine begins its work.

There are so many factors that go into yield, from timely moisture, to the potential impact of heat at the time a crop flowers, to heavy rains, and of course the input of fertilizer and the control of weeds which compete with crops.

Most of the stands this year, at least on the highways

travelled recently, look good although as always they are variable too. Some crops don’t look very tall, which from an SUV seat at 100 kilometres an hour doesn’t mean a lot, but one wonders if the crop perhaps needed an extra rain or two. Or, it might just be the variety, and a great yield awaits harvest.

That is the $64,000-dollar question as they say, which in the case of today’s agriculture the sum is not far off what producers will be shooting for on a quarter-to-quarter basis in terms of gross return.

Of course while the wheels will be starting to turn, and that is always good news when harvest gets a good start in August, there are still weeks of work ahead. Mother Nature can still throw a wrench into the gears with rain and frost.

But at present farmers will just be happy to be out in the field reaping what they have sown, which is the heart of their business, meaning driving the combine is often when producers are happiest.

Signs and wonders and living in hope

Recently at a family gathering one of my siblings asked a question all of us face as we get older, “Is heaven real? What will happen when we leave this world.?”

How real is our faith and how real is eternity? I like to answer with the signs and wonders that happen in the lives of faith-filled families.

Faith is often predicated on being able to separate coincidence from miracle.

In the end it doesn’t really matter. Everything is a gift from God. Let me share a few of my family’s stories.

“Isabelle’s fireworks” is related by my niece.

Members of the family were called to the hospital

after her mom’s passing.

“As my family and I drove back to the hospital to be with Dad at 4 a.m. that morning, in the barley field across the road from our family farm fireworks were going off.

“We told dad about the fireworks when we arrived at the hospital, and he mentioned how he had told mom just before she passed away to give him a sign when she got to heaven.

Those fireworks must have been her sign.

“You see our farm is 10 km from the nearest town and 100 km from the nearest city, so the odds were pretty slim that we would see fireworks at the particular moment.”

of passing a slow-moving truck ahead of me. I decided not to rush. Just then a car passed from the front with no lights on. There was no way I would have seen that car if I had passed.

“Thank you, dad.”

There are many stories in our family tree that make it easier to face the reality of our journey’s end. It is real. Our journey will end. And there is much to look forward to.

Enjoy the moments when the veil separating us from heaven is thin. Let me give an example: The June following the accidental

death of a young Canora man, his family was attending Sunday Mass on the weekend of the graduation of one of the children. I was assisting with distributing Holy Communion.

As I watched the family approach to receive the Eucharist, I glanced up at the mother. I noticed an image of her late husband above her and to her left. I can still see the smile on his face. He was still with his family.

A long time passed before I shared this with anyone. Finally, prompted by the Holy Spirit, I shared the story with the family.

Miracles in our daily lives continue to make God an exciting reality.

Food bank needs increasing ahead of new school year With a new school year just around the corner, the need for the services of Canora’s Filling the Gap Food Bank is on the increase.

Unfortunately, donations have not been keeping up with the demand, said Pastor Mavis Watson, who has been the volunteer administrator of Filling the Gap for about the past eight years.

“Making the challenge even greater this year, our bank account is bare, so we have no flexibility to purchase those items that are in the greatest demand,” Watson explained.

She said late August and the first couple of weeks of September are often a time of great need, and this year is no different.

“Families are spending money getting their children ready for school and in a number of situations, especially for those families on assistance, there is no money left to buy food,” Watson said.

She said at this time of year, it’s not unusual to receive as many as

eight requests for food hampers per week.

“In some situations the husband has left the wife and children. She may be too embarrassed to tell anyone, so her neighbor might not even know they’re struggling.”

In addition to families, seniors are also often in need of assistance.

Watson said in past years, it used to cost about $90 to feed a person, but in recent months that has gone up to approximately $110, which makes the need even greater.

The Canora Ministerial Association oversees operations of Filling the Gap. Referrals of names of those in need of assistance come from other pastors, as well as other community leaders including RCMP, Canora Ambulance, banks, and public health. Those receiving hampers are eligible to apply again after two months. Watson said their names are kept private.

shelves right now, but many other foods are required in order to provide a healthy diet. She said the biggest needs are for canned meat, breakfast cereal, bread, butter, coffee and fruit juice in one litre or

larger containers. With many gardens just about ready for harvest, donations of garden produce such as potatoes, carrots, onions and cucumbers are welcome.

Watson reminds prospective donors to check expiry dates to make sure food items are still safe to eat.

Donations of frozen meats are welcome, but they have to be professionally packaged. She said a health inspector drops in to visit Filling the Gap once a year to make sure safety standards are being followed.

Non-food items most needed include: dish and laundry soap, body wash, toothpaste, toilet paper, shampoo and most other things people typically need.

This level of scrutiny has the potential to impact the way the product can be used in Canada in the future, said the release. By following the steps listed above, Canadian farmers can do their part to demonstrate responsible product use and protect the investments they have made in their crop.

The weekend-long competition is split up into a number of age categories and groups, giving everyone an opportunity to win, whether new to the sport or an experienced competitor.

Hunter-male The hunter-male competition was won by Gerard Kiefer of Kamsack with an aggregate total of 773 over the two days, just ahead of Don Gould of Lloydminster in second place with 769 points. Corey Heshka of Canora placed third at 712 points.

Hunter-female Joni Mack of Jansen came in first in the hunter-female category after shooting a 702 aggregate total.

Sandra Baron of Canora finished second with an aggregate of 624 points, followed by Amanda Kiefer of Kamsack, who finished third with 565 points.

Compound unlimited-male Lonny Gray of Raymore was the clear winner of the compound unlimited-male category with an aggregate total of 794 over the two days. He was followed in the standings by a pair of Canora shooters.

Clinton Kraynick finished second with 581 points and Damon Paley shot 539 to place third.

Compound unlimited-female Andrea Wiens of Raymore

finished first in the compound unlimited-female category with an aggregate two-day total of 769 and was the only entry.

Compound fixed pin-female Belinda Bocking of Lintlaw was the winner in the compound fixed pin-female category with a two-day total of 525 and was the only entry.

Master compound 60-male In the master compound 60-male category, Orest Belesky of Yorkton took first place with an aggregate score of 681 points. Hall Thomas of Canora finished second with 567 points, barely ahead of Merle Bass of Yorkton in third at 566 points.

Traditional-male Vince Bailey of Canora won the traditional-male category with a two-day total of 507 points, followed by Darcy Rewakowsky, also of Canora, in second place with 293 points. Ross Tressel only competed on day two, but still finished third with 178 points.

Traditional-female Linda Westermann of Sturgis finished first in the traditionalfemale category with an aggregate total of 257 points and was the only competitor.

Junior compound-male Jessie Biletski of Canora was the winner in the junior

compound-male category, maximum age 20, with a two-day total of 231 points and was the only entry.

Cadet compound-female The top three finishers in the cadet compound-female category, maximum age 17, were all from Canora. Emily Owchar took first place with an aggregate score of 633, with Rebekah Thomas in second place at 482 and Bella Mykytyshyn third with 381 points.

Cub compound-male In the cub compound-male category, maximum age 14, Kaiden Masley of Sturgis was the winner with a two-day total of 726 points, followed by Wyatt Mastrachuk, also of Sturgis, in second place with 693 points. Cole Marcinkoski of Canora finished third with 682 points.

Cub compound-female In the cub compound-female category, maximum age 14, there were two competitors. Tynell Mack of Jansen took first by shooting an aggregate score of 745, followed by

Peewee-female In the peewee-female category, maximum age nine, there were two competitors. Presley Owchar of Canora was the winner with a twoday total of 480 points, followed by Keyla Kiefer of Kamsack in second place with 256 points.

A pair of special awards are presented each year to deserving members of the Assiniboine River Archery Club, the Travis Sleeva Memorial Award and the

Colleen Tiechko Memorial Award, said Owchar. These awards go to the male and female archers who display a love for archery, dedication and good sportsmanship. This year’s Travis Sleeva memorial award went to Cole Marcinkoski, while Amber MacDonald of Invermay received the Colleen Tiechko memorial award.

The club also gives away two bows by draw to one male and one female who register to shoot for both Saturday and Sunday of the 3-D shoot and entered in the cadet category and under (17 years of age and younger). The female bow, sponsored by Preeceville Archery Products, was won by Makayla Heshka. The male bow, sponsored

by Assiniboine River Archery Club, went to Michael Owchar.

Owchar said there are many people who work behind the scenes to make the shoot successful.

Preeceville Archery Products sets up shop for both days and helps the archers tweak their equipment and keeps them supplied with arrows.

New income support program launched for people in need in Saskatchewan The Government of Saskatchewan has announced details of a new income support program that will help people receiving income assistance overcome challenges, earn more income, become more self-sufficient and start a career.

The new program, called Saskatchewan Income Support (SIS), began accepting applications from new clients on July 15, said a release from Social Services. The new program will be simpler, transparent, client-friendly and have new features that will help transition clients to greater independence and a better quality of life.

Monthly earned income exemptions will allow clients to keep more of the money they make as they move into the workforce, the release said. Through Motivational Interviewing, staff will support clients to make positive decisions, manage their benefits/household expenses and reach their goals.

A new online application will allow clients to apply whenever they want and from wherever they want, saving both time and paperwork, and a simpler benefit (shelter and basic needs with a few additional benefits for emergency health/safety needs or job-related expenses) will

allow staff to spend more meaningful time with clients, helping them address their challenges instead of filling out paperwork.

“In this new program, our staff will work closely with clients to help them increase their independence and overcome employment barriers,” said Paul Merriman, minister of Social Services. “We want to provide individuals who are on social assistance with the supports they need, while ensuring our programs are easier to navigate and addressing the challenges they face.

“Income assistance programs have not been updated

in our province for more than 50 years and this new program will allow us to make changes in response to what we’ve been hearing our clients want: increased independence and more tailored guidance by our staff,” Merriman said.

Clients who are currently on the Saskatchewan Assistance Program (SAP) or Transitional Employment Allowance (TEA), will remain on those programs until they are wound down in the summer of 2021, or until clients voluntarily move to the new program or no longer require income support, the release said.

As of July 15, SAP and TEA will no longer accept new applications. However, the Saskatchewan Assured Income for Disability (SAID) program will remain in place and continue to run alongside the new program.

“Ignite Adult Learning Corporation is excited to be working with Social Services to help young at-risk adults become independent and self-supporting,” said Terina Shaw, Ignite Corporate liaison officer. “We are pleased that they share our vision to grow and develop young, at-risk people right here in Saskatchewan.”

Canada’s job vacancies maintain record high for a fourth consecutive quarter Canada’s private sector job vacancy rate maintained its record high of 3.2 per cent for the fourth quarter in a row, according to the Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB)’s latest Help Wanted report on August 8.

Saskatchewan’s job vacancy rate decreased slightly with 7,400 unfilled jobs. In total, 429,000 private sector jobs, 23,000 more than in the second quarter of 2018 went unfilled for at least four

months in the second quarter of 2019, said the release.

In Saskatchewan, the private sector job vacancy rate decreased slightly to 2.1 per cent, representing 7,400 unfilled jobs.

“Job vacancy rates advanced in five provinces and remained stable or declined slightly in the other five last quarter, although Quebec, British Columbia and Ontario continue to drive the trend. We’re also seeing a strong pressure

to increase wages in those firms that had vacant positions,” said Ted Mallett, CFIB’s vice-president and chief economist. “While this rate of job vacancies can be a sign of a growing economy, we don’t want labour shortages to become an obstacle to business success. CFIB is asking all parties to commit to measures tackling the labour shortage in the upcoming federal election.”

push average organizationwide wage levels up by 2.3 per cent compared to the 1.5 per cent gain planned by businesses without any job openings. Firms with fewer than five employees were the hardest hit, reaching a job vacancy rate of 5.4 per cent.

the national average at 3.2 per cent. New Brunswick (3.1 per cent), Manitoba (2.6 per cent), Prince Edward Island (2.2 per cent) and Newfoundland and Labrador (2.0 per cent) saw their vacancy rates rise, but remained below the national average. Nova Scotia’s vacancy rate remained stable at 2.3 per cent, while rates in Saskatchewan (2.1 per cent) and Alberta (1.9 per cent) dropped.

More than 900 people were caught driving distracted in June The results from June’s Traffic Safety Spotlight on distracted driving are in.

During June, law enforcement across the province reported 919 distracted driving offences, with 798 or 87 per cent for cell phone use, according to a release from SGI. With numbers like that, it’s no wonder that SGI and law enforcement continue to focus their efforts on distracted driving, said the release. SGI has released a new multi-media ad campaign to address distracted driving and to show the human impact.

The message of the campaign is clear: distracted driving kills – don’t miss out on life. Visit www. sgi.sk.ca/distracted-driving-kills to see the new campaign.

The fine for driving distracted is $280, plus four demerit points under the Safe Driver Recognition program. And, those who get two cell phone tickets within a year will have their vehicles towed and impounded for a week.

But it’s more than just the financial cost of being caught driving distracted (and with strong enforcement on our roads, the odds of getting caught are highly likely).

For some, it’s the physical cost of being injured in a distracted driving collision. Distracted driving is still a leading cause of injury on Saskatchewan roads.

For others, it’s the emotional cost of losing a loved one in a distracted driving collision.

Canora Ladies Golf Tournament declares individual and team winners Local group continues to change appearance of Canora

The work of Canora Revive Group continues in the t ra n s fo rm a t i o n o f the appearance of the community.

These are before a n d a fte r p i c tu re s of the outside of one of the group’s latest projects, the Teamworks Design building. Brandi Zavislak, community development officers, said the group supplies the labour while businesses look after the paint, in a continuing effort to make Canora a more attractive destination for new businesses and residents.

The Canora Ladies Golf Club held its annual tournament on August 14 with a total of 40 golfers participating, including 12 individuals in stroke play and 14 teams of two persons each.

In stroke play, Phyllis Paul of Crystal Lake won the championship flight with a score of 93. The first flight winner was Darlene Senkow of Canora Beach after a round of 105. The second flight ended with a first-place tie between Maxine Stinka of Canora and Holly Masters of Crystal Lake, each with scores of 112. Stinka was declared the winner after a countback.

In team play, the winning duo in the championship flight was the team of Brenda Serfling and Bev Bielinski of Yorkton with a score of 83. The first flight winners were Sonja Sheasby and Gloria Signarowski of Yorkton with a 96. Eleanor Murray of Canora and Laura Pasiechnik of Preeceville took the top spot in the second flight after a round of 105.

Preeceville candidate seeking NDP nomination for Canora-Pelly

Stacey Strykowski of Preeceville has declared her intention to seek the NDP nomination for the Canora-Pelly constituency.

In her announcement, made on August 15 at the riding association’s summer barbecue in Preeceville, Strykowski said it was time to challenge an absent MLA and a government which has c l e a r l y f o rg o t t e n r u r a l Saskatchewan, according to a release.

Strykowski, a lifelong area resident, sits on Preeceville Town Council, is a community services activis t and volunteers for many organizations, said the release. She and her husband, Jonathan, along with their two children live in Preeceville, where she works for The Co-operators.

“I’ve witnessed firsth a n d t h e e ff e c t s o f t h e cuts to service in rural

Saskatchewan,” said Strykowski. “As a founding member of the Health Action Committee, I’ve been raising awareness and speaking out against cuts to acute care service delivery in our community. Preeceville Hospital is in name only. The 10 acute care beds are no longer utilized purely for acute services. We were assured that emergency services would fill the gaps, but emergency services have been further compromised by lack of coordination and underfunding, with now, only one unit available at all times in Yorkton, and one on call.

Units based in Preeceville are supposed to pick up the slack. This level of risk is just unacceptable.

“Municipal funding equates to not even a full p o i n t o f t h e P S T. T h i s drastically affects the quality of infrastructure and

services that councils can provide and Preeceville Town Council constantly seeks creative alternatives to offset the cuts to funding which should be constant and reliable.

“I’m really concerned about how the cuts to education will affect my children and all those attending schools in the division. More and more, we’re expected to fundraise for things the government used to support.

“The elimination of STC has had an unbelievable effect on our communities, particularly those who are elderly and have medical needs that must be met in urban areas. This service was crucial to rural Saskatchewan, not only for passenger travel from remote areas, but freight delivery as well.

when Schneider, who just finished his second full year in the WHL, was invited to play with U18 Team Canada in April in a tournament in Sweden, said his mother, Carmela Schneider, in a telephone interview. “He played well in Sweden which led to his getting the invitation to participate in the World Junior Summer Showcase in Michigan this summer, running from July 26 to August 3.”

Braden began playing hockey at age 4, she said.

He is now 17, a graduate of Carlton Comprehensive High School of Prince A l b e r t a s o f t h i s y e a r, and will be taking a light load of further education classes at the University of Brandon this fall, “to keep his mind working.”

“Both of our sons, Braden and his younger brother Marek, age 16, are avid hockey players,” said Carmela. “Hockey is their life, and that means it has become a way of life for the whole family.

We spend a lot of time on the road, but we wouldn’t h a v e i t a n y o t h e r w a y.

Both sons have a natural talent and passion for the sport but they also have the drive and determination to want to succeed.”

Braden’s father, Kelly Schneider, an agent for Freshwater Fish Marketing Corporation who works with commercial fishermen, and Carmela have become used to the frequent long trips required to be a hockey parent.

“The hockey community is made up of a tight-knit group, so we get to know the other parents and socialize with them,” she s a i d . “ We c h e e r o n t h e wins and losses. It’s a very positive experience for the family.”

B r a d e n ’s f a m i l y i s proud that he was able to

graduate high school with a good average. Being on the road so much, playing games in both Canada and the U.S., meant extra effort taking summer classes. Carmela explained that the WHL has education advisors to keep the players connected to their home schools and focused on education, Braden will be a top prospect eligible for the 2020 NHL (National Hockey League) Draft next June. “He missed the 2019 draft eligibility cutoff by 5 days because of his birthday,” his mother said. “He is doing very well in the position as defenseman with a knack for penalty kills. His size and strength are his definite

assets.

“The commitment to hockey gives Braden, and all of us, a busy life but it is that commitment to a team sport that teaches the players so many life skills. The players have to work hard in order to earn a spot on the team, and what they learn includes leadership, time management, sportsmanship, handling pressure and commitment.

As for the tournament in Plymouth, Braden played in 3 of the 4 games, and of those games Team Canada won two and lost two. While playing with Team Canada he sported No. 7 on his jersey, and while playing with the Wheat Kings, No. 2.

Hoop Jam basketball tournament features tight competition

The second annual Hoop Jam basketball tournament was held at Canora Composite School on August 3 and 4.

The tournament is structured to have athletes seen in action by scouts and hopefully get to college through basketball, said Ken Keys, program co-ordinator.

“Jay-Cee Brass streamed the games live online for all to see,” said Keys. “He announced all games and his contributions were tremendous.”

The double knockout tournament involved boys teams from Canora,

N o r q u a y, Yo r k t o n a n d Melville. Players were between the ages of 14 and 18.

CCS players taking part included Dawson Zuravloff and Hudson Bailey on the Canora team, and Matthew Rock, Carson Ostafie and Alden Baron, who played for the Yorkton squad.

Pastor Greg Bright delivered the blessing of the tournament before the action began.

In the opening games for each team on August 3, Norquay edged Yorkton 73 to 71 while Canora decisively defeated Melville 88 to 45. In the game between

Yorkton finished a close second in the tournament.

Pastor Greg Bright blessed the tournament before the first game on August 3. the two winners, Norquay won another close one, this time by 72 to 70 over Canora.

In a contest between a pair of one-loss teams, Yorkton defeated Melville 95 to 38 to eliminate the Melville squad.

“Melville entered the tournament with a number of 14-year-old players and they played hard in an effort to overcome the other powerhouse teams, but fell short in the end,” said Keys.

After the win over Melville, Yorkton advanced to a game versus Canora, another one-loss team. In

a contest involving Canora players on both teams, Yorkton roared out to a 17 to 4 advantage after the first quarter, and kept the lead throughout, resulting in a 66 to 49 victory.

“It made things very tough when Canora lost star point guard Will Exner, but Dawson Zuravloff took over and played very well, getting his team back into the game,” said Keys. “Canora shooting guards, including Hudson Bailey came alive by scoring from the outside and driving to the basket.

But the inside game was very tough going due to the aggressiveness of the very tough Yorkton team, including CCS players Alden Baron, Matthew Rock and Carson Ostafie.”

Canora was eliminated after its second loss of the tournament. Yorkton advanced to a rematch with Norquay on August 4. Because Norquay was undefeated, Yorkton would have to win twice to win the tournament.

But Norquay ended Yorkton’s hopes with its third consecutive nail-biter

Minister Bibeau highlights investments to improve access to local food The Honourable MarieClaude Bibeau, minister of agriculture and Agri-Food, recently highlighted the $50 million Local Food Infrastructure Fund, designed to reduce food insecurity, support communitybased organizations, and strengthen local food production through the recently launched Food Policy for Canada, according to a release.

Over the next five years, the Local Food Infrastructure Fund will support community-led projects at urban gardens, community kitchens, food banks, farmers’ markets, and greenhouses.

Eligible organizations will be invited to submit an application through the first intake period for nonrepayable funding of up to $25,000, which continues until November 1, said the release.

The Government is now engaging with potential applicants on the second stream of the Local Food Infrastructure Fund (Projects to Strengthen Local Food Systems), where applicants may receive up to $250,000 in non-repayable financial assistance for capital and food equipment. Interested organizations are invited to take part in the online consultation.

The Minister also announced that applications are being accepted until September 20 for membership in the Canadian Food

Policy Advisory Council, a central piece of the Food P o l i c y. T h e A d v i s o r y Council will bring together the expertise and diversity of stakeholders and experts within the food system to address both the opportunities and challenges of today and the future.

The Food Policy for Canada is the product of consultation and collaboration with Canadians across the country. The Government of Canada heard from more than 45,000 Canadians, including food producers and processors, experts in environment, health and food security, Indigenous groups, non-government organizations, and community advocates.

The vision for the Food Policy for Canada developed through these consultations is: All people in Canada are able to access a sufficient amount of safe, nutritious and culturally diverse food.

Canada’s food system is resilient and innovative, sustains our environment, and supports our economy.

To realize this vision, the Government of Canada is investing more than $134 million through Budget 2019, to support new initiatives in key action areas, including: • a Buy Canadian promotion campaign that will aim to increase pride and consumer confidence in Canadian food; • support for community-led projects like

greenhouses, community freezers, and skills training that address food challenges and food insecurity in Northern and isolated communities; • a challenge fund to support new and innovative approaches to reduce food waste in food processing, grocery retail, and food service; • new funds to help the Canadian Food Inspection Agency crack down on food fraud – the mislabeling and misrepresentation of food products – to protect

consumers from deception and companies from unfair competition; and • taking the first steps to work alongside provinces, territories, and not-for-profit organizations towards the creation of a National School Food Program.

The Food Policy for Canada aligns with the objectives of initiatives across the Federal Government, such as the Canadian Agricultural Partnership, the Heathy Eating Strategy, and the Poverty Reduction Strategy, among others.

PARASKY, Peter - Peter Parasky passed away peacefully at the Canora Gateway Lodge on August 13, 2019, at the age of 78 years. Peter was born on June 23, 1941, to Anton and Mary (Teron) Parasky in the Hyas District, SK. He received his education at Danbury school. Following his schooling, he worked for farmers in the area, selling grain, and then gained employment at a sawmill in Sturgis, SK. Over the years, Peter also worked for the municipality, treating planks of wood for bridges, and with the Sewer and Water Works Department in Stenen and Hyas, SK. Additionally, Peter worked with his brother, Bill (William) with CN Rail, replacing railway ties. Peter lived in Tadmore, SK for thirteen years before moving to Canora, SK, where he worked as a furniture mover. He then purchased a lawn tractor and began tilling gardens and doing yard work for people in the area. In his spare time, Peter liked fishing, loved sports and enjoyed watching baseball and football on television.

He will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him. Peter was predeceased by his parents, Anton and Mary; sisters, Lillian Drushka and Anne Becenko, and brothers: John and Marion Parasky. He is survived by his sister, Sylvia Tataryn-Urbshott (Murray); brother, William Parasky; as well numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family and friends. In Peter’s honour, a Funeral Service was celebrated at 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, August 20, 2019, from the Chapel of Leson’s Funeral Home, Canora, SK, with Pastor Roy Jamieson, officiating. Interment followed in the Canora Cemetery. Those wishing to make expressions of sympathy may make donations to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Saskatchewan or to the Kidney Foundation of Canada, as tokens of remembrance, in memory of Peter Parasky. 306-563-4302 POPOFF, Mike - Mike Popoff, beloved husband of the late Lil Popoff of Canora, SK, passed away peacefully at the Canora Hospital on August 9, 2019, at the age of 92 years.

Mike was born May 26, 1927, on the family farm near Kamsack, SK, to Afanacy and Ann Popoff.

He attended the Spring Valley School and achieved his grade eight education. In his younger years, Mike took on the role of many varied occupations.

He worked in the forest of BC with his brother, George, and in a factory in Toronto, ON, with his cousin, Peter. Eventually, he returned to Saskatchewan to start a Stucco/Masonry business of his own - Popoff Construction. On one of his many lunch breaks at the Silver Grill restaurant in Canora, he met a lovely and lively young waitress named Lillian Sawchuk. On September 21, 1956, Mike and Lil were united in marriage at St. Andrew’s United Church in Canora, SK. Together they were blessed with five healthy boys: Terry, Greg, Craig, Danny and Dale. Mike furthered his education and received his Journeyman’s Certificate in Bricklaying from Saskatchewan Technical Institute in Moose Jaw, SK. He worked for numerous years for Graco/Graham Construction as a bricklayer and foreman for many major projects across Saskatchewan and Manitoba. Mike also knew the value of spending time with loved ones and over the years enjoyed numerous camping trips with his family. He shared his spare time enjoyably hunting, fishing, playing cards and guitar with his many buddies, friends, and of course his family. Dedicated to his faith and community, Mike attended church and took on various volunteer roles and involvement within the Canora Fire Department, St. John’s Ambulance and as an AA member who took the time to offer support to others. He will be remembered as a dedicated, kind-hearted, hard-working man, who cherished his family and time spent with loved ones and will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him. Mike was predeceased by his mother, Ann, stepmother, Nellie, and father, Afanacy; wife of 61 years, Lil; brothers: George, Bill and John; and half-brother, Paul. He is survived by his children: Terry (Joan), Greg (Kathy), Craig (Sharlene), Danny (Lori), and Dale; treasured grandchildren: Breanna, Scott, Brett, Owen and Courtney; and his half-brother, Peter (Lois); as well as numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and many friends. In Mike’s honour, a Celebration of Life Service was celebrated on Monday, August 19, 2019, at 2:00 p.m., from the Chapel of Leson’s Funeral Home, with Reverend Nancy Brunt officiating. Interment followed in the Canora Cemetery. Those wishing to make expressions of sympathy may make donations to the Canora Hospital Auxiliary, as tokens of remembrance, in memory of Mike Popoff.

Fugger’n and other bird tales

By Kaare Askildt Fugger’n, a colloquial Norwegian word meaning the bird, was used as a title on many of my late twin brother Kjell’s short stories.

He was older than me by ten minutes and always referred to me as his little brother. I’ll try to honour his memory by writing about birds. But before I get to that, Kjell looked after a couple of cats, and apparently his cats referred to hummingbirds as fast food.

Ole was in the old movie theater watching the classic Gone With The Wind, based on Margaret Mitchell’s book. He noticed that someone or something was pecking popcorn from his large cup. “Wow! Are you a bald eagle?” exclaimed a surprised Ole. “Yes, indeed I am,” said the bald eagle.

“I’ve never met a speaking bald eagle before,” said Ole. “What are you doing at the movies?”

“Well, I liked the book,” replied the bald eagle.”

“A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush,” is an old saying going back to when hunting with falcons was in vogue. It means that the real value is what you already have rather than what you might wish to get.

Truls lived in California and had taken up bird hunting. He ended up in front of a judge.

“Young man, you have been charged with shooting and killing a California condor. How do you plead?” inquired the judge.

“Guilty your honour,” answered Truls.

“Guilty? Don’t you know how endangered these condors are?” asked the judge incredulously.

“Yes, sir I do,” answered Truls. “But I have to feed my family, we’re so very poor.”

“That is no excuse, $1,000 fine or 30 days in jail,” decreed the judge.

“By the way, what does a California condor taste like?”

“It tastes really good, kinda like a cross between a bald eagle and a whooping crane,” said Truls.

Little Sven had a reputation for being a bit of a smart aleck, and the teachers always tried not to address questions to him. One day in basic arithmetic the teacher posed a problem using birds as an example.

The ques tion was: five chickens were sitting on a fence and a fox came and grabbed one. How many chickens were left sitting on the fence?

Little Sven didn’t even bother putting up his hand to answer, he just stood up and said, “None, the fox scared them, and they all flew away.”

The phrase, “kill two birds with one stone”

means to complete, achieve or take care of two tasks at the same time, or solve two problems with one action.

Of course, it goes without saying that to kill two birds with one stone also includes screwing up two things at the same time. For example, you can be unproductive and procrastinate at the same time.

During a question and answer session, the moderator asked a participant if she knew what would happen if a spotted owl lost his voice.

After a brief pause she answered that the owl then wouldn’t give a hoot.

Ole had recently ob tained his pilot’s license.

He bought a small singleengine airplane and had practised many solo flights with it. Lena was flying with him one day when suddenly a Canada goose hit the windscreen with a bang, which scared Ole and gave him a fatal heart attack. Lena grabbed Ole and hauled him out of his seat.

She sat down in the pilot’s seat, put on the headset and grabbed the controls. She

keyed the mike and said, “Mayday! Mayday! Help me! The pilot is dead, and I don’t know how to fly the plane! Help me! Please help me!”

She heard a voice on the headset that said, “This is air traffic control and I have you loud and clear.

Please relax, I will talk you through this and get you safely back down on the ground. I have a lot of experience with this kind of problem. Everything will be fine. Now please give me your height and position.”

“OK, I’m five foot, four inches, and I’m sitting in the pilot’s seat at the front of the plane,” said Lena.

“I see,” said the air traffic controller. “Repeat after me, Our Father who art in heaven…”

I have made some slight changes to Kjell’s favorite fugger’n story: A magician was working on a cruise ship. Since the audience was different each week, the magician did the same tricks over and over again.

saw the shows each week and began to understand how the magician did every trick.

Once the parrot understood, he started shouting in the middle of the show, “Look, it’s not the same hat!” or, “Look, he’s hiding the flowers under the table!” or “Hey, why are all the cards the ace of spades?”

The magician was furious but couldn’t do anything. It was, after all, the captain’s parrot.

Then one stormy night on the Pacific, the ship unfortunately sank. The magician luckily found himself on a large piece of wood floating in the sea, and as fate would have it, with him on one end and the parrot on the other.

They stared at each other with hatred but didn’t utter a word.

This went on for a few days. Finally, on the fourth day, the parrot could not hold back any longer and said, “Okay, okay I give up.

Provincial Auditor examines opioid prescribing and dispensing practices in Saskatchewan In her 2019 Report – Volume 1, Chapter 7, Judy Ferguson, Provincial Auditor of Saskatchewan, calls for the Ministry of Health to consider whether FEED & SEED

its monitoring activities of Saskatchewan opioid prescribing and dispensing practices are sufficient to reduce opioid misuse and abuse.

For the six most prescribed opioids, Saskatchewan’s prescribing stands well above national averages, said a release from the Provincial Auditor ’s office. Physicians prescribe 95 per cent of prescribed opioids with dentists and nurse practitioners prescribing nearly the remaining five per cent.

resulted in an average of 16 hospitalizations daily in Canada in 2016–17.

In 2016, Saskatchewan’s Minister of Health publicly committed to take action to reduce the abuse and diversion of opioids, the release said.

The Ministry has two main strategies—supporting health care professionals’ education, and monitoring opioid prescribing practices.

management, prescribing and dispensing of opioids, and identifying opioid misuse. This helps physicians provide appropriate pain treatment options, and avoid prescribing of high-risk doses of opioids.

Taking opioids for more than three days increases addiction risks; some opioids like fentanyl are more addictive than others.

The audit also found the Ministry, since 1988, financially supports the Prescription Review Program (~$276,000 annually). The Program identifies prescribers with inappropriate prescribing practices by monitoring 19 types of prescribed opioids. However, it does not monitor five federally controlled opioid medications, or an opioid (tramadol) that Health Canada plans to add to its listing of controlled medications.

The audit also identified improvements needed in delivering the Program.

These include keeping the listing of opioids to monitor current, eliminating delays in notifying physicians of prescribing concerns, and better documenting activities related to following up on prescribing concerns.

“Because the Ministry does not monitor all opioids prescribed in the province or actively monitor the Program,” said F e rg u s o n , “ I t d o e s n o t

know whether the Program helps reduce prescribed opioid misuse.”

Furthermore, the Ministry does not actively monitor opioid dispensing practices in Saskatchewan’s 385 pharmacies, the release said.

It does not know if provincial pharmacies contribute to Saskatchewan’s o p i o i d c r i s i s .

Ferguson makes additional recommendations such as consideration to require review of patient medication history before prescribing high-risk medications like opioids.

This may help physicians better identify a patient’s potential for opioid misuse or double-doctoring for prescriptions.

“Implementing a riskbased monitoring approach to identify opioid dispensing concerns would help the Ministry find additional opportunities to reduce opioid misuse and diversion,” said Ferguson, “Ineffective and insufficient monitoring of opioid prescribing and dispensing practices may result in increased addiction, abuse a n d m i s u s e , a n d d i v e rsion of prescribed opioids that can ultimately lead to overdoses and death.”

Car show hosted by Rawhides at Stenen This Week Marketplace Rawhides in Stenen hosted its fourth annual car show recently.

The well-known restaurant had an area of its campground set up for the annual car-show and

This year they were just shy of having 100 entries, with 85 to 90 cars and trucks attending the event organized by Ken McKay with the help of Kevin Haw. Field of Dreams helps farmers boost production and improve bottom line The 21st annual Field of Dreams open day was held

by Prairie Soil Services on July 25, along with partners Lindgren Farms, Bayer Crop Science, ATP Nutrition and Pattison Agriculture. The event is held to give growers in the local area an update on wheat, canola and pea agronomy, said Liam O’Halloran, Prairie Soils agronomy manager.

“The Field of Dreams aims to push production by targeting yields above and beyond the average. Thereby, growers can expect to drive down their unit cost of production,” said O’Halloran.

The demonstration is done on a large scale at Lindgren Farms near Norquay, with two quarter sections dedicated to canola and two quarter sections to wheat. A new addition for this year was one quarter section of peas.

“By conducting the trials

on a grand scale, the results are more representative of a farm operation than a standard test plot by itself,” said O’Halloran. “The project has seen some excellent results and some important lessons have been learned.”

For 2019, yield goals of 120 bushels/acre of wheat and 100 bushels/acre of canola have been set.

O’Halloran said an important part of the venture is replicated trials in research plots.

“This year we have replicated trials in wheat and canola investigating variety, pesticide, and nutrition performance as well as the interaction between specific varieties and inputs,” he reported. “We also have trials to assess the effect of seeding rate in wheat and seed size in canola.”

The day started with a tradeshow from the Field

of Dreams sponsors, giving growers the opportunity to discuss varieties, inputs, machinery and technology with the various reps. “Growers were given a demonstration of Climate FieldView software and the importance of gathering information from their field operations,” said O’Halloran. “By combining this information with digital imagery, farmers can gain insights into their farm operation and push their production capabilities.”

With rain setting in for the afternoon, the crop tour was brought inside. O’Halloran and Megan Dick, Prairie Soils agronomist, presented ‘Peas PhD’ an overview of the important agronomic decisions that need to be made to a pea crop to take the yield beyond the average.

The day was wrapped up with a fundraising and networking dinner with proceeds from the 50/50 as well as a donation from the Field of Dreams project to The Do More Agriculture Foundation, a not-for-profit organization focusing on mental health in agriculture across Canada.

New heliport at Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital in operation A new heliport on top of Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital in Saskatoon has opened ahead of schedule and became operational on July 25, ensuring Saskatchewan patients are closer to receiving the critical care they need, stated a release from Saskatchewan Health Authority.

Emergency personnel from Shock Trauma Air Rescue Service (STARS) will now be able to land at the site, which received its certification from Transport Canada on July 24. This technical review and certification process ensures that the new heliport meets Transport Canada’s regulations and guidelines to support safe helicopter operations on the new hospital.

“This heliport will greatly enhance emergency services for Saskatchewan residents by allowing rapid transportation and transfer of patients in life-threatening situations,” Health Minister Jim Reiter said. “Landing directly at the hospital will save lives when every second counts.”

Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital (JPCH) will be home to new Royal University Hospital (RUH) Adult Emergency Department and a new C h i l d r e n ’s E m e r g e n c y Department, which will open in the fall.

STARS transports about 300 patients to RUH each year.

Previously, STARS landed at Innovation Place and patients were transported via ground ambulance to RUH, which took up to 25 minutes.

With the heliport now operational, patients will be inside RUH about five minutes after landing. Once the new Emergency Departments (EDs) open this fall, patients will arrive at EDs within about three minutes of landing at the heliport.

“This is a critical piece of infrastructure to ensure timely access to advanced medical care for the health of Saskatchewan patients,” said Corey Miller, Vice-President of Provincial Programs with the Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA.) “On behalf of the Saskatchewan Health Authority, we would like to thank our staff, project team, and partners for all of their efforts in getting us to the point of opening this heliport earlier than originally scheduled. These efforts will have positive impacts on patients by reducing transfer times and providing quicker access to our clinical teams.”

In anticipation of the potential that the heliport could be operational before opening of JPCH, staff and physicians have been finalizing processes and routes, and conducting mock moves

from the heliport to both the existing Emergency Department in RUH, and the new Emergency Departments located in JPCH. The total capital budget for the Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital was $285.9 million, which included $257.6 million from the Province of Saskatchewan. Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital Foundation has fundraised over $75 million ($28.3 million for capital costs and $46.6 million for furniture and equipment.) The Royal University Hospital Foundation fundraised $5 million for equipment and furniture in the new adult Emergency Department.

The 2019-20 Provincial Budget also provided $9.6 million to finalize information technology needs at JPCH and an increase of $23 million to support operations when the hospital opens this fall.

Located in Saskatoon next to the Royal University Hospital, Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital will care for pediatric and maternal patients. All patient rooms in the 176-bed hospital are private, and designed for families. Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital will have leadingedge equipment and will host ground-breaking research and innovation.
