Former Canora resident helps dementia patients Family has always been important to Cheryl Williams (nee Lewchuk) of Melville.

When she found out that her mother Elsie Lewchuk was suffering from dementia, Williams was determined to find a way to support her.

Wi l l i a m s g r e w u p i n Canora, and worked for a local business for several years after high school graduation.

After getting married she lived in Regina for a number of years, until she, her husband Bob and son Bryce came back to Canora in 1999. In 2007 the family moved to Bob’s home town of Melville, where they still reside.

Williams’ mother has been

a resident of Gateway Lodge in Canora since April, 2017.

“The signs and progression of the disease have been very slow,” she said. “It would be hard to put a date as to when it started or for how long. Mom had passed the doctor’s testing criteria.

But she experienced a serious health issue in 2015 with a fall that broke her left wrist.

Then almost a year later she had another fall and broke her right wrist, and we as a family became more concerned.”

Williams said family members visit her mother as often as possible and do what they can to help, including decorating the walls with labelled pictures of

family members to give staff and visitors conversation starters.

“She has a television/ DVD player in her room so she can watch her favourite shows and we can play DVD’s of her granddaughter Jordelle’s Ukrainian dance concerts,” said Williams.

“Dad brings her the Courier and magazines to read.”

She admits that it’s hard to see the deterioration in her mother’s condition and know that it can’t be improved or fixed.

“We’re not always sure of what and why mom says the things she says when we visit,” said Williams. “We Continued on Page 2

We sometimes think she knows who we are but then there are other visits when we are somebody else. As adults we can come to terms with the change but it’s harder for the grandchildren to see their Baba that way.”

Williams said she considered making a financial donation to support her mother in her battle with dementia, but decided on a more direct approach.

“I was told that monetary donations are gobbled up, to a significant extent, by administration costs and rarely is the full amount donated used entirely for the cause intended,” she explained.

Williams turned to the Internet for ideas and information about dementia. She came across a website for the Alzheimer’s office in Ontario which was providing kits to help those dealing with Alzheimer’s disease, a type of dementia.

“I felt this was the answer. I came across written

step-by-step instructions with diagrams of a “twiddle-muff,” recalled Williams. “I don’t knit, never learned how, and when my mother-in-law tried to show me, I never got the hang of it. But I had the knitting needles and some yarn.

Armed with YouTube video instruction, I attempted to knit. After several days of heavy concentration to keep the tension right and not slip a stitch, I had knitted a 26-inch long by 6-inch wide strip. I had to find a quicker process and discovered a $30 knitting loom kit. From September to the middle of December of 2018, I was able to complete 18 muffs and have donated them to the Canora Gateway Lodge. In January I completed another seven.”

“I found out I’m much faster and better when using a loom. Besides, I don’t slip a stitch or have to remember whether I’m making a pearl stitch or a knit stitch.”

The twiddle-muffs are knitted sleeves formed into a tube to allow a person’s hands to easily slide in from the ends.

“They provide visual and sensory stimulation, including

warmth for cold hands,” explained Williams. “And they distract the patient from scratching at their skin or picking at their clothing. It also is known to calm agitation and keep busy hands busy and the patients occupied.”

The twiddle-muffs can be made from any type of yarn suitable for institutional use and its laundry system, but Williams recommends softer yarn to maximize patient comfort.

“The addition of buttons, pom-poms, ribbons and strings that are secured very well can be placed on the outside and inside to provide things to touch and hold,” she said. “These accessories must be very secure so as not to be a choking hazard and also short in length so that the patient does not have the ability to wrap it around a finger and cut off circulation.”

Each twiddle-muff is one of a kind, made of different colours and combinations of colours, according to the preferences of the patient.

Around the same time that she discovered the twiddlemuffs, Williams came across

lap mats.

“They were available to purchase through a wholesale supplier that sold therapy items. I didn’t want to make the purchase online and thought I could re-create and adapt it to my mom’s likings.”

Williams said the lap mats are sensory stimulating oversized placemats, and can be accessorized with features such as buttons, zippers, ribbons and pockets.

“The mat is placed on the person’s lap. It provides an activity, keeping the hands busy.

It also keeps the legs warm. It can be used while sitting in an upright position or while lying down.

It helps the brain and body stay active while in a repetitive mode. It calms, distracts, lessens the loneliness and helps pass the time.”

Williams made the mats from materials donated by three Melville sewing enthusiasts.

“They loved the idea and wanted to contribute,” she gratefully recalled. “Fabrics used are cotton, fleece, microfibre, and flannel. The inside material is a batting to provide

From September to the end of January, Williams made a total of 29 mats and donated them to Gateway Lodge.

She encourages others to take up the challenge and get involved.

“Melville District Quilters Guild is excited about adding this project to their group’s activities.”

Williams said making lap mats and twiddle muffs has been well worth the effort.

“It’s a very good feeling.

Making and producing these items provides a sense of satisfaction,” she said. “Mom is a giving person who was active in the community. It is part of our heritage. It is a pleasure for me to pay it forward and give back to the elderly.”

Her intention is to provide the Canora Gateway Lodge with the first 62 sleeves and mats, one for each bed.

“After that, I think it would be wonderful to have these items available to new residents at Gateway Lodge as a fundraiser,” Williams concluded.

NDP, Blood Watch call for an end to paying for plasma donations The NDP joined with Blood Watch to call on the government to end the practice of pay for plasma donations in Saskatchewan, and instead focus more on bolstering the volunteer system run through Canadian Blood Services (CBS.) “There are a number of health and safety risks associated with paying for plasma donations,” said Ryan Meili, leader of the NDP, in a release. “By strengthening the province’s volunteer system, we can limit this risk while also ensuring that the

donations stay in the province and benefit those who need it in Saskatchewan instead of international pharmaceutical companies.”

Following the opening of a pay for plasma clinic in Saskatoon, the CEO of CBS noted that local donation numbers dropped posing a risk to Canadian supply.

The Saskatchewan government agreed to allow a pay for plasma clinic to operate under the false pretense that plasma donated at the clinic will stay in the province.

CBS does not purchase blood products from paid donors in Canada. Several provinces, including Alberta, British Columbia, Ontario and Quebec have already moved to ban paid plasma donations.

“CBS has to be the centre of procuring and distributing blood products in order to be done as safely and efficiently as possible,” said Vicki Mowat, health critic for the NDP. “Having more focus on supporting CBS will lead to an increase in donations and allow it to become

self-sufficient.”

Canadian Plasma Resources (CPR) opened their Saskatoon clinic on February 18, 2016, offering $25 gift cards for a donation or persons may donate that amount to a charity for a tax receipt.

To encourage repeat visits, the clinic will boost the payout to $80 for the second donation and $50 for every subsequent visit.

At the CBS’ annual general meeting in October 2016, CEO Graham Sher announced CPR’s Saskatoon

operation was causing the decline in volunteer donations in the city. At CBS’ annual general meeting, Sher asked governments for “a pause of support for commercial activity” in plasma.

“There’s marked confusion as to who is operating in the Saskatoon market,” Sher told the media in December 2016.

“We’ve begun to see some early impacts of having this private, for-profit enterprise operate in our jurisdiction.

It is early evidence, but it’s certainly consistent with

what other countries are seeing when you see large-scale ramp-up of the paid plasma industry side by side with the blood industry,” he said.

CBS has indicated they will not be purchasing plasma from CPR or its affiliates. As the sole purchaser of plasma for Canadian patients, the plasma being collected in Saskatchewan will not be used for Canadian patients.

In May of 2018, Senator Pamela Wallin introduced a bill to ban plasma donation across Canada, said the release.

southern Saskatchewan.

The summer of 2018 saw extremely low rainfall across a large portion of southern Saskatchewan with near record dry conditions in some locations. These conditions continued into the fall where precipitation was also below normal. As a result, soil moisture conditions were dry at freeze-up and significant wetland storage was available in many areas, according to the release.

There is a band through

the northern agricultural region and southern boreal forest where, based on current conditions, near normal snowmelt runoff is expected.

Below normal snowmelt runoff is also expected over the far north.

The spring runoff outlook could change as there is potentially another eight to ten weeks of winter remaining. However, with dry fall conditions and below average winter precipitation to date, it would take well

above average precipitation in February, March and April to produce an above average spring runoff within most areas.

With below or well below normal snowmelt runoff expected in the spring of 2019, it is anticipated that there could be some agricultural water supply shortages similar to 2018. These issues will likely intensify and expand across southern Saskatchewan. This could also create some surface

water supply issues for municipalities and irrigators if conditions remain dry into the summer months.

Unless conditions change significantly, WSA will be aggressive in storing water during the snowmelt runoff period to ensure water supplies are adequate and lake levels are desirable for recreational uses through 2019.

As conditions change and get closer to spring runoff WSA will issue another updated forecast in March.

Municipal revenue sharing to increase for 2019-20 Premier Scott Moe has announced that Saskatchewan municipalities will see an overall f u n d in g in cr eas e o f more than $10 million for 2019-20, bringing the total amount to $251 million next fiscal year for the municipal revenue sharing program.

The announcement was made while Moe addressed the Saskatchewan Urban Municipalities Association (SUMA) at its Annual General Meeting, said a Government of Saskatchewan release.

The additional $10 million in 2019-20 represents a four per cent increase from the current fiscal year, following a review of the

program and consultation with municipal stakeholders that began in 2018 and resulted in a new predictable, sustainable and transparent formula, according to the release.

Mayor Gina Rakochy of Canora said she was pleased with the news of a potential revenue source.

“We are as always cautiously optimistic whenever potential revenue sources are identified. However, until we get any formal notice of the formula for our share we will be waiting, as will be other communities,” she explained. “We will still continue finalizing our budget based on current known revenues to ensure we meet the needs

of our community.”

“Municipalities across Saskatchewan will continue to have a consistent source of unconditional provincial revenue to invest in their local priorities,” said Moe. “The a d j u s t e d r e v e n u e s h a ring formula recognizes our current fiscal reality, evolves this key provincial program, and retains the fundamental qualities of predictability, sustainability and transparency.”

The municipal revenue sharing formula will now be based on three quarters of one point of the provincial sales tax (PST) revenue collected from the fiscal year two years prior to the current year.

“SUMA is pleased that today Premier Moe an nounced municipal revenue sharing will increase to $251 million for 2019-20,” said Gordon Barnhart, SUMA president. “Through extensive consultation with the government, we believe the adjus tments to th is program will be a benefit to all of our members. We are also happy to see the continued commitment to stable and predictable funding, something that our municipalities appreciate and count on.” “ We a p p r e c i a t e d t h e opportunity to provide input around revenue sharing consultations,” said Ray Orb, Saskatchewan Association of Rural

Municipalities (SARM) president. “Having predictable funding on an annual basis only benefits our members when it comes to planning for the future.”

“New North is happy that the provincial government is increasing municipal revenue sharing this year,” said Bruce Fidler, New North chair.

“Our members depend on this program for predictable funding, and we are pleased with the premier’s announcement today.”

The program will also see $1.5 million from the total municipal revenue sharing amount comanaged with municipal partners to invest in initiatives that support good

governance, capacity building and regional planning.

“It just makes sense to cultivate potential innovative ideas that can help improve services at the local level that are so important to everyone’s quality of life,” said Warren Kaeding, government relations minister. “I also want to thank the municipal sector for all of its perspectives and thoughtful contributions, which enhanced the review of the program.”

From 2007-08 to the current fiscal year, Saskatchewan municipalities overall have received more than $2.6 billion in provincial funding through the revenue sharing program.

RCMP activity report for late 2018 and early 2019

By Leanne McGriskin Canora RCMP Detachment Break and enter RM of Preeceville Canora RCMP are investigating a break and enter to a rural residence in the RM of Preeceville that occurred between January 19 and January 21. Nothing was reported to be stolen or missing due to the house being vacant. Access to the house was gained through a patio door which was kicked in, causing damage to the door and door frame.

No suspects or witnesses have been identified at this time. Damage sustained to the culverts was estimated at around $1,200. If anyone has

Canora/Sturgis RCMP are asking persons who may have seen anyone in that area to please call the Canora RCMP

Cabin break-in at Burgis Beach On October 19th in the early morning a cabin in Burgis Beach was broken into. A trailer on the property was broken into as well. While RCMP were investigating the break and enter a photo ID was found at the scene. RCMP are continuing the investigation. Anyone who has any information regarding this incident is asked to call Canora RCMP at 306-563-4700.

Moe manages to keep municipalities happy Think back about a dozen years ago when we were in the middle of a pre-election fight over education property tax on farmland.

Lorne Calvert, then premier, vowed to remove it, although his NDP Government never quite got around to doing it. Instead, his government’s focus in its 2007 budget was free prescription drugs for seniors. The NDP were clobbered in rural seats and lost power to Brad Wall and the Saskatchewan Party.

It was an important lesson on why governments need to pay attention to municipal funding issues, even issues in areas where you aren’t likely to win many seats.

Both municipal politicians and property taxpayers are all too aware of the provincial government’s role in providing adequate funding to keep down local taxes.

This takes us to one of the bigger problems Moe has faced since becoming premier a year ago.

Upon taking over from Wall, Moe has had to contend with a reduction in the municipal revenue sharing pool from $271 million in 2016 to $241 million in 2017.

Moreover, after that $30-million cut in the austerity 2017-18 budget, the revenue sharing pool was frozen at $241 million last year so that Moe’s government would have a better shot at balancing the budget this year.

On top of having to contend with cut and freeze, there was now uncertainty for municipal politicians. The revenue sharing formula had been based on a simple, clean and predictable formula that most quite liked.

Under Wall’s administration, it was decided to give one

percentage point of the then-five-per-cent provincial sales tax to fund the municipal revenue sharing pool.

Simple. Easy. Predictable. It was a formula that towns, cities, villages and rural municipalities could easily use to determine what amount of money they could expect in future years. That made budgeting decisions for municipalities, who, unlike the province cannot run deficits, significantly easier.

But then along came that spring 2017 budget that not only raised the PST to six per cent, but broadened it significantly to things like junk food, restaurant meals and insurance.

It was more money for the province that it clearly needed to fight its deficit. But it also threw its revenue-sharing formula out of whack.

one-percentage-point-of-the-PST as the new revenue sharing pool formula and handed over $300-million-plus to the municipalities. Municipalities surely would have been overjoyed over that.

But it wouldn’t have been as helpful to the provincial government’s own deficit fight. The Sask. Party government clearly needs every penny it can get to balance the budget.

So what Moe did instead at last week’s annual Saskatchewan Urban Municipalities Association (SUMA) meeting is unveil a new formula to fund the revenue sharing pool. It is now three-quarters of a percentage point of a much broader six-per-cent PST. In practical terms, that will mean $251 million for the municipal revenue sharing pool in the 2019-20 budget.

That’s a modest $10 million or four-per-cent more than last year, still less than the $271 million in 2016 and far cry from the $300-million plus it would have been if it was a full percentage point.

The NDP and its leader, Ryan Meili, have cried foul, hinting an NDP government could provide a full percentage point.

And mayors of the big cities, where Moe and the Sask.

Party are in for tougher political fights, seem happy with the modest increase and even happier to see a return to stable source of funding.

And Moe seems to have dealt with a big potential big headache.

Keeping municipal politicians reasonable happy is key.

They’re not here yet and I am going bonkers In recent weeks, being just a little bit of a latecomer to the party, I have discovered eBay. I made three purchases in one evening, for a total of four over the last 12 or 13 years. That first purchase happened to be from someone I knew, who lived in Battleford when I lived in North Battleford. I drove over to his place to pick it up.

Anyhow, as a lot of the specialty items I need can’t be obtained locally, I’m increasingly turning to online shopping.

By the time I drive to Regina for something, anything, it’s easily $200 in food, fuel, and a whole day wasted. I can buy a lot for $200, each trip. I might be buying used camera gear or computer hardware. Whatever it is, I try to shop local first, but sometimes there’s no other option.

I find that Amazon.ca and Newegg.ca, in addition to eBay. ca, seem to be fitting the bill.

So you would think, by now, that the local couriers would consider my address to be something of a semi-regular dropoff. At least, not one that’s out of the blue.

That might be the case for Purolator, but I think there needs to be some work with UPS. Which brings us back to eBay. I ordered three items from different parts of the continent. One was from Quebec, another was from California, and a third from Indiana. At the same time, I ordered two minor items, one from Amazon, and another, identical item, from a Canadian camera store.

The two identical minor items arrived within minutes of each other, and in short order. The only difference between them is I paid $10 for shipping from the camera store and didn’t have to pay for shipping from Amazon, as I pay my $100 or so per year for Amazon Prime. So far, so good.

But these other items are driving me a little batty.

One, from Quebec, arrived today, via Canada Post.

Everything was good, and the expected delivery date was from Monday to Friday this week. It actually came last Friday afternoon, and a tag was left in the mailbox. With me picking it up from the post office on Monday, I was happy.

Following the tracking on the two other items has been less satisfying.

The notes on eBay’s tracking noted on Friday, at 7:25 p.m.

“The driver was unable to collect funds on the first delivery attempt. A second attempt will be made.”

That’s interesting. I was home at the time. I remember this distinctly as I had just got back from taking photos out of town and rolled into the driveway at 7:15 p.m. The next 15 minutes I was in-and-out of the house, unloading gear. And the kids had been home for several hours prior to that. No delivery truck drove up during this time, so I call bovine feces on their “first delivery attempt.”

The funds they are trying to collect are for import duties, which I though had been covered in the shipping costs, but whatever.

The next entry said for 5:01 p.m. on Saturday, “The driver

was unable to collect funds on the first delivery attempt. A second attempt will be made.”

Where was I, my wife and two children at that time?

Home. All of us. No one came to our door. And I didn’t see tracks in the snow the next morning when I shovelled the driveway.

So here we are, on day three of their supposed delivery, it’s after 5 p.m. (couriers usually get here around 3 p.m.), and there’s no delivery guy from UPS. In the past couple days, there was a fair bit of snow. So I can understand if it takes the various delivery drivers longer to come around. And I’m an individual, not a regular business stop. Priorities. I get it.

At Christmas time I ended up ordering two copies of my wife’s gift, a year’s worth of nursing uniform pants. The first shipment said on Amazon that it had arrived. It did not. I waited a week, no pants, and no gift for me to put under the tree. So I squawked to Amazon and they sent a replacement order immediately which arrived on the double-quick. Then the first parcel arrived the next day.

So now my wife had two years’ worth of uniform pants for her. Being the respectable guy I am, I contacted Amazon and paid for the second parcel, as opposed to sending them back.

She’s going to use them anyhow, I figured.

I now am beginning to understand why people are installing doorbell cameras; to see who shows up to your house, and when. Or in this case, to prove a negative when they do not show up, despite saying they had.

Online ordering opens up the world in a way Sears or Eaton’s could only dream about. But it’s those pesky deliveries that still need to be perfected, methinks.

There really really is a heaven What will heaven be like? When I was conceived, I was a pulse, caught and bound.

I rebelled and hate filled me. Subtle hate, a feeling like original sin. But leaving this physical consciousness is so different. Oh wow!

Words fail. There is only essence, the quality of what we are. Beyond imagination.

It is more knowing than learning, more being than becoming, more God than man.

John Milton tried to describe the eternal in Paradise Lost and Paradise Regained. These epic poems depict the battle between God and Satan, with man at the center. The fall of Adam and Eve. Paradise Regained begins with the baptism of Jesus and

the Father’s voice, “This is my Son.” Satan is perplexed by this “Son of God” concept and determines to destroy Jesus.

The temptation in the desert follows. Jesus does not fall for Satan’s offers. Political power? Food? Beautiful women?

Power lies in self-control, and Jesus reveals that he is God. Defeated, Satan withdraws.

Much of the mystery of the afterlife has been revealed to us in various near-death experiences that have been recorded in convincing fashion. One of the more recent is that of a young boy who emerged from life-saving surgery with remarkable stories of his visit to heaven.

In Heaven Is for Real four-year old Colton Burpo, son of a Nebraska pastor, slips into unconsciousness and enters heaven. There he meets God and various family members

who have died previously. The movie version is very convincing as actual events in the life of this believable family support many theological truths about heaven.

Scripture has given us glimpses of what heaven will be like, “eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the heart of man imagined, what God has prepared for those who love him” (1 Corinthians 2:9.)

We will be like the risen body of Christ: “The Lord Jesus Christ… will transform our lowly body to be like his glorious body” (Philippians 3:20-21.) We will shine like the sun (Matthew 13:43.) All tears will be wiped away and all pain gone. Mourning and death shall be no more (Revelation 21:4.)

And then there are the many rooms in the Father’s house (John 14:2.) That’s where we can enjoy multilocation, the chance to see all our long-lost family and friends.

I will see my godparents again. And I hope to see my ancestors who kept the faith in Russia.

And of course, there is the Isaiah 25 banquet scene with the well-aged wines. This is a place to pause and enjoy the Lord’s favour. But there is time for all that since we shall not sleep (1 Corinthians 15:51.) This will come in the twinkling of an eye.

But time is another dimension that changes in heaven.

Trends in world trade often tough to figure out Trying to fully understand the intricacies of the economics of world trade is not surprisingly like figuring out how to unravel the Gordian Knot.

So much of trade is influenced by other economic sectors, which when looked at in isolation are good for a particular area of trade, but when you zoom out to look at the overall impact, it might not be as positive across a broader range of trade.

Of course there are university degree courses dedicated to understanding world economics, but for the layman, of which I am most admittedly one, the connections within the economy are fascinating.

For most of us, we look at the world economy in terms of how it directly impacts us on a personal level.

For example, at a recent luncheon, a former staff associate was talking about their decision not to head south to spend a portion of the winter months in the warmer climate of the southern United States. The reason was simply one of personal economics. They had looked at the state of the Canadian dollar versus its American counterpart, didn’t like that the Canuck buck was, at least in the early winter, rather

low against the US dollar and so they decided to turn up the thermostat at home and stay here.

The same conversation did get around to my friend fondly recalling the days of the Canadian dollar being higher than the American one, and how that made a trip south highly advantageous.

That same scenario is generally reversed if you are an agricultural producer. While a weaker Canadian dollar creates some challenges in terms of buying some things, the lower dollar is hugely advantageous when it comes to export sales.

When you operate in a country which far over produces the

domestic market for most farm products, exports sales are crucial and a lower dollar opens doors to sales.

While no one would want the Canadian dollar to completely tank compared to the US currency, par value is certainly less conducive to export sales.

But the dollar tends to trend higher as oil prices rise, given that this country sits on a significant reserve of oil.

In fact just last week the Canadian dollar was up at market close Friday, following the price of oil.

Reports showed oil was up on Friday as West Texas Intermediate crude oil gained US$1.54 to close at US$55.33 per barrel.

While the changes are modest, if it were to become a trend, Alberta and Saskatchewan could benefit significantly on the oil side. We don’t seem to be on any path that will get us to $100/barrel oil, but even a jump of $10 would be big for the sector.

Of course if it drags the dollar higher it could impact export sales in some other sectors, and send more Canadians south on holidays next winter, which has economic impacts that are less desirable.

You got me what for Valentine’s Day?

By Gail Krawetz of Invermay Lately I have been intrigued by the different types of rolling pins available.

I own a few myself, including my late mother’s. I have also noticed that these culinary devices have become popular kitchen decor items and often are used on home improvement shows, which I love to watch.

Now, hold on, some of you are probably thinking... how is any of this connected to Valentine’s Day? Just give me a moment.

So I began researching the history of the rolling

pin and I came across some interesting trivia.

And some of that trivia has a distinct connection to the very cornerstone of Valentine’s; love.

The simple rolling pin is one of the oldest kitchen gadgets and was first documented in a 17th century illustration, but the rolling pin was probably in use long before that time.

Throughout the ages, it has been utilized by various cultures and its basic design has changed very little.

But imagine my surprise when I learned that early

sailors, bored at sea, would pass time by carving rolling pins out of a moisture-resistant wood known as lignum vitae. The sailors might make their own design, but most attached handles were made from whale bone.

Then these rolling pins were offered as gifts to a lover back home. (Now you see where I’m going with this.)

Later in the 18th century, port towns in England began producing hollow glass rolling pins that sailors purchased to take back for a loved one. These became particularly popular gifts

that young, amorous lads would offer to a gal they were wooing for marriage.

(Fellows, I wouldn’t advise trying that today.)

Some glass rolling pins were painted, gilded, and later embellished with images of sailors and ships, and had phrases such as, “Be true to me” printed on them. The gift was probably better received because these pins were often filled with goods such as bath salts, vinegar, cocoa, or baking powder. (Fellows, if you still insist on giving such a rolling pin, I would suggest

filling it with more exciting items such as jewelry or a new iPhone or even exotic coffee beans.)

Other glass rolling pins actually called “love tokens” were never even meant for kitchen use, but became popular parlour conversation pieces. (I can’t even begin to see the wisdom in this.)

No doubt, women over time, became skeptical a b o u t th e n o t io n th at a rolling pin was somehow romantic. This might have led to the common image of women beating their

husbands over the head with a rolling pin. (I, for one, think there might be some kernel of truth to this supposed joke.)

My advice would be to know your partner. If your significant other is into rolling pins, then go for it.

But it might be safer to opt for more traditional gifts such as flowers, candy, diamonds, or whatever they might fancy.

Record $12 million for crop research invested Lawrence MacAulay, minister of agriculture and Agri-Food Canada and David Marit, Saskatchewan agriculture minister, have announced more than $12 million in funding for 44 crop-related research projects through Saskatchewan’s Agriculture Development Fund (ADF) and the Strategic Research Initiative (SRI), according to a release.

The ADF and SRI programs are supported through the Canadian Agricultural Partnership, a five-year, $388 million investment

in strategic initiatives for Saskatchewan agriculture by the federal and provincial governments, said the release.

“Our government is investing in programs that support the innovative and sustainable growth of the Canadian agricultural sector,” said MacAulay. “This funding in crop research will provide Canadian farmers and agribusinesses with the knowledge and technologies they need to compete globally and boost their bottom lines.”

“By investing in croprelated research, we’re investing in the future of Saskatchewan’s agriculture industry,” Marit said. “The projects we’re investing in today consist of a variety of fields of study, including herbicide resistance, pest control, crop breeding and much more. Not only do these projects enhance our industry by creating more opportunities for producers and agribusinesses, they cement our province as a leader in agriculture research.”

The Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities (SARM) is pleased the federal government has created the new Ministry of Rural Economic Development.

The prime minister shuffled his cabinet and has added the new ministry, to be headed by Bernadette Jordan, said a release.

Jordan will be tackling the new portfolio aimed at addressing rural issues like broadband connectivity, infrastructure and natural resource development.

“The Ministry of Rural Economic Development is welcome news to SARM,”

stated Ray Orb, president. “This move demonstrates the federal government’s recognition that more resources need to be dedicated to rural issues in the country.”

SARM plans to engage with the ministry on important rural economic issues in Saskatchewan once the ministry is up and running, according to the release.

SARM is an independent association that represents rural municipal government in Saskatchewan and is the principle advocate in representing them before senior governments.

Make it four tournaments in a row for CCS senior girls basketball team It’s been nothing but wins for the Canora Composite School (CCS) Cougars senior girls basketball team since the start of the season. The squad won its fourth straight tournament on February 1 and 2 in Asquith, said Curtis Baillie, coach.

In the first game on February 1, the Cougars played the Kodiaks from Creighton.

“Canora jumped out to an early lead right from the tip-off and went on to beat Creighton 76-40,” reported Baillie.

In the second game of the tournament on February 2 Canora faced off against Asquith, last year’s 2A silver medalist from HOOPLA provincial finals.

“Asquith proved to be one of the toughest tests the Cougars have faced this year,” said Baillie. “They played outstanding defense and moved the ball really well against us. Our girls were able to get a lead and slowly

increase it throughout the first half.

“Its been a few years since Canora has beaten Asquith and after coming out on the losing end of some close battles with them last year, our girls were hungry to get the win. The Cougars were able to maintain the lead for the entire game, and despite a third quarter push back from Asquith, our defense was able to create some turnovers and grab a few extra rebounds that we were able to turn into points on the other end.”

The final score was 75 to 43, which propelled the Cougars into the tournament final, a matchup against St. Brieux for the second time this season.

“The final game was very fast paced. The Cougar players were able to use their size against St. Brieux to control the rebounds both offensively and defensively,” said Baillie.

“Canora came out on top with a 54 to 20 win,” said Baillie.

Second annual fundraising wheelchair bonspiel held at Kamsack Another successful fundraising wheelchair bonspiel was held at the Broda Sportsplex in Kamsack.

On January 25 and 26, a total of 16 four-person teams participated in the event which required players to send curling rocks down the ice using a stick, while seated in a wheelchair steadied by a person

standing behind.

“Without the steady hand of a teammate behind the wheelchair on the ice, there would be a lot of slipping and sliding, not to mention where the rock may end up,” said Taylor Geres of Langenburg, a member of the Teddy Hudye foursome.

“There are no ‘sweepers’ in this game,” said Hudye, explaining that scoring of the game was similar to shuffleboard.

“We had four more teams in the event this year,” said Kim Hudye, an organizer of the second annual benefit function held for her son Teddy, who has been wheelchair bound for the past four years following a dirt bike accident. Proceeds of the Funspiel go towards helping pay for Teddy’s ongoing therapy at Four Steps Wellness Centre in Regina.

It is estimated that $6,500 was raised at the event from sponsors and team entry fees.

Last year around $5,000 was raised in the Funspiel.

“The event went well this year,” Kim said. “New people came as spectators this year and were enthusiastic about trying the event next year. They said it looked like it would be fun to give it a try.”

In the Shoot to the Pin

contest, the winner was Zac Petruk who took home $250.

“In Shoot to the Pin a person may ‘buy’ a rock at $5 or five for $20,” said Kim. “The person has one chance per rock to get it closest to the centre of the

rings. The shooter is seated in a wheelchair, with someone to steady the chair, and the shooter uses a stick.

There is no sweeping.”

The 50/50 draw winners were Bruce and Colleen Hunter, who took home $120.

“We wish to acknowledge the support of the curlers and sponsors,” Kim said. “We could not be this successful without them.”

Nominations accepted for MP Wagantall’s 2018 Volunteer Recognition Award Cathay Wagantall, Member of Parliament for Yorkton-Melville, is currently accepting nominations for residents of Yorkton-Melville who deserve to be recognized for his or her volunteer service, according to a release.

“In the fall of 2017, as we celebrated Canada’s 150th birthday, I was honoured to recognize 30 individuals and four groups at the first YorktonMelville Volunteer Recognition Awards ceremony,” said Wagantall.

and families for their time and talents dedicated to fundraising projects, service organizations and special causes.

Preeceville and District Mushers’ Rendezvous hosts 20th year The 20th annual Preeceville and District Mushers’ Rendezvous was said to have been another success and proceeds are to go towards purchasing equipment for the Preeceville and District medical centre, according to organizers.

“We have had a great weekend despite the weather challenges,” said Kevin Cook, one of the organizers.

“This is our 20th year and it is great to see so many mushers that keep supporting and returning to attend our race.

“We are thankful for the dedication of the Rough Rider Snowmobile Club for its tireless efforts in helping to keep the trail groomed.

This year has been a challenge with the cold temperatures and winds but we worked hard to ensure the safety of the mushers and their dogs on the trails,” he said.

Jim Ward, president of the musher committee also acknowledged all volunteers, mushers and committee members. “It has been a challenging year but the 20th rendezvous was determined to be a success with the support from everyone.

The future of the race remains uncertain at this point and we will make a decision in early fall whether the racing weekend will continue.

We have many things to consider before a decision can be made. This weekend has been another success,” stated Ward.

The rendezvous featured a 10-dog race over a course of approximately 20 miles each day, and sixdog race February 3 and 4.

The starting point was the Preeceville Skating Arena.

The main race, the Crossroads Credit Union 10-dog classic, had 12 entries with winners based

on one-day total combined time. The race was only held over one day February 3, due to weather conditions.

First place was won by Carl Knudsen of Porcupine Plain. Second place went to Donny Poulin of The Pas, Man. and Rob Turner of The Pas won third pace.

Other racers traveled from St. Medard,

Quebec; Carlowrie, Man.; MacDowell; The Pas and Thompson, Man. The Town of Preeceville six-dog race had 17 entries. Held over a two-day period, 10 miles were run each day and winners were based on a total combined two-day average. First place was won by Carl Knudsen; Aaron Campbell of Melfort won second place and

Loretta Dykan of Thompson won third.

Other racers traveled from France; Fort Providence, NWT; Quebec; Hay River, Woodridge and Thompson all of Manitoba; Meadow Lake, Prince Albert and Preeceville.

The five-dog Preeceville EDC junior race for mushers aged eight to 16 years had only one entry, with Hannah Delawski of Preeceville winning first place.

The Rob Bletsky onedog race featured three entries. The race was open

to children seven years old and under. Each participate received a certificate and prize. Mushers featured were, Mishka Smiley, Wyatt Delawski and Jayce Belous.

The two-days of racing concluded with a variety supper and the mushers’ awards at the Preeceville Legion Hall.

Highlights of the GSSD Board of Education January Meeting The regular monthly meeting of the Good Spirit School Division (GSSD) board for January 2019 took place in the Fairview Education Center board room on January 31.

Mike Haczkewicz, Yorkton Regional High School (YRHS) principal along with Johnna McBride and Dennis Nesseth, vice-principals and Roby Sharpe, SRC (Student Representative Council) advisor accompanied members of the YRHS SRC as a delegation to the board.

Tasso Stamatinos, president, and Anara Morrison and Zane Chopik, SRC members, delivered a presentation to the board regarding the 2020 Canadian Student Leadership Conference (CSLC) being hosted in Yorkton during September of 2020. Though Yorkton is the host community, students from across the GSSD are involved as student leaders for the event.

The Conference theme is “From the Roots Up” signifying that the very first CSLC began in Yorkton in 1985 when the premier of the day challenged Yorkton students and their advisor to host a national conference.

Since 1985, the conference has been hosted in communities across Canada, giving student leaders from across the country an opportunity to attend workshops to further develop their leadership skills, build confidence, and discover new ideas to help them make a difference

in their own schools and communities. The board of education has committed $44,000 to the transportation costs associated with hosting the conference in 2020.

Quintin Robertson, director of education/CEO, discussed budget priorities for the 2019-20 school year. The board committed that the 2019-20 budget priorities needed to focus within the seven areas of: advocacy, principled decision making, expenditure review, school staffing, minimizing impact on students, maximizing impact on First Nations students, and maximizing the impact of the Education Sector Strategic Plan.

Robertson reminded the board that the infrastructure branch of the ministry of education requires an application for funding for all major capital projects exceeding $1 Million. These applications require board approval and are to be submitted to the ministry by February 28.

The board of education passed a motion permitti n g an o u t o f c o u n tr y / extended educational field trip request allowing the Canora/Invermay/Norquay/ Preeceville/Sturgis senior band and chaperones to travel to Minneapolis, Minnesota on May 8 to 13.

Comprehensive senior band students and chaperones to travel to Minneapolis on May 8 to 13 as well.

Lisa Wotherspoon, superintendent of education, provided the board with information regarding how math screeners are currently utilized across the GSSD. Wotherspoon indicated that the screeners are administered in September with all Grades 2 to 8 students. The content in the screeners is based on Saskatchewan math curriculum from the previous two grades. For example, students beginning Grade 4 are being asked to show competency with content from Grades 2 and 3 math curriculum.

Recognizing that speed in processing is not a strong indicator of conceptual understanding, the amount of time required to complete the screener is not to be limited.

A data collection template accompanies the screeners and allows teachers to identify potential individual student gaps as well as potential gaps in previous instruction. Thus, the screeners are designed to be responsive and to inform teacher instruction.

Students who score below 75 per cent in September are re-screened in April for

evidence of growth.

Robertson shared some statistical information regarding busing within the Good Spirit School Division: • Total students transported: 2279 rural, 411 urban • Number of routes: 98 rural, 6 urban • Average age of bus fleet: 2012 (six years old), 2002 (oldest), 2019 (newest) • Capacity utilized on bus (average): BusPlanner, 56 per cent; actual, 77 per cent.

• Average one-way ride time: 40 minutes Robertson shared that the draft school year calendar is currently being jointly developed with Christ the Teacher Catholic Schools.

He indicated that work on the 2019-20 school calendar began on January 24 in order to construct several calendar options. Once the options have been developed, GSSD will construct a survey that will be open to staff and the public to voice their opinions on the calendar options.

Donna Kriger, deputy director, updated the board on the MySchoolSask/ MonÉcoleSask (MSS/ MES) Program which is a multi-year business and technology transformation program that includes the

implementation of a new provincial student information system (SIS), modernization of business processes, the migration of legacy data and the integration of the ministry’s student data system.

She shared that the benefits of moving toward a new student information system will make student transitions across the province easier and more manageable.

Kriger, who is the executive sponsor of the project within the GSSD identified that she and her team are committed to implementing the new student information system with little interruption to schools and their stakeholder groups. The plan developed for GSSD will ensure that all schools, students and their parent(s)/ guardian(s), and division c e n t r a l o ff i c e s t a ff a r e trained and supported for a full implementation to begin in the fall of 2019-20.

She reviewed how the GSSD commissioned Laurie-Anne Rusnak to carry out an organizational review during the spring of 2018.

The review highlighted an overwhelming response that the GSSD Technology Department was understaffed and presented a

recognized “gap” within the organization. As a result, GSSD added to its organizational structure a “database programmer/analyst”, an “IT manager” and a “data reporting assistant.” In January, Kishan Malaviya joined the GSSD Central Office Team as a database programmer/analyst. To date, Malaviya has im proved a number of internal processes, making GSSD more efficient in various areas within the organization.

Robertson updated the board on the progress of the newly acquired Good Spirit Education Complex. Teresa Korol, operations manager and Dave Sliva, facilities co-ordinator, met with the consultants from 1080 Architecture on December 20 to review the building in preparation for final drawings. The consultants advised that they would have tender-ready drawings for mid-February. Given the August 30 transition timeline, Korol has requested partial architectural drawings so the project can begin as soon as possible.

The GSSD facilities team has expressed the intent to tender the phases of the project separately and act as the prime contractor in an effort to manage the timeline and budget.

Hunters, anglers, and other conservationists from across the province will gather to discuss issues, participate in workshops, debate resolutions, develop policy, review SWF program updates, and attend presentations on wildlife, fisheries and enforcement.

Whitetail watching … and learning

By Kenn Wood Yellowhead Flyway Birding Trail Association (YFBTA) newsletter White-tailed deer commonly congregate in “yards” to facilitate survival in Saskatchewan winters.

Our farmyard (5 miles west of Ebenezer) is surrounded by suitable habitat (aspen forest) for such a yard. This, along with some oats and hay for a lure, has resulted in our home becoming the center of a deer yard for over a decade.

This article will summarize behavioural observations of these fascinating creatures; most of them made through the dining room window.

Whitetails are not normally herd animals so why do they “yard up” in the winter? It seems that depth of the snow pack is the single most important factor determining the population of the yard. In years of little snow, few will gather. The day the snow is gone, they disperse. When there is little snow they will paw through it to access feed. The yards are always in a forest where browse is available for grazing and the wind doesn`t blow. A walk through the forest during a high-density winter reveals a myriad of paths and bedding depressions in the snow. Deer can become easy prey to predators when floundering in deep snow. The labyrinth of trails provides a host of escape routes.

Whitetails are not very vocal critters. One hears them emit a loud snorting / barking sound when an animal is encountered in the forest. I always hear the animal before I see it. This causes me to wonder, is it an alarm or a threat? I have never heard a vocalization from one that is feeding in a group. Compare this to cattle that employ a large vocabulary (I speculate that the vocal propensity of cattle goes along with their gregarious behaviour.)

Whitetails communicate primarily with body language and their fluency is remarkable. Anyone who has seen them is familiar with the “flagging” of the organ that gives them their name. Is there a more effective way to communicate alarm? When dining together (which never happens in summer) they are constantly threatening one another. They raise their heads with ears forward and stare at an opponent. If this does not get the message through they will pin their ears and strike with their front feet.

When they really mean business they rear on their hind legs and strike out.

As spring draws near (and shedding begins) bare patches may become apparent on some subordinate deer; the byproduct of this constant bickering.

The most impressive communication is the alpha display of the bucks. Heads are up with full eye contact, ears forward, tail up and fanned out like a peacock, and hair on the throat latch fanned peacock style as well. Do not try to take these males on. Avoid eye contact and walk away because the next thing might be lightning fast strikes with lethal front feet. You should know what comes next; head down and impaling you with those wicked antlers.

Cervidae tend to be defined by their antlers. That is how humans determine the prize winning stag at the “Fish and Game” banquets every year. The energy expended every year to shed and regrow these magnificent adornments is significant. There must be more to this than providing trophies for the man cave.

The fact is antlers have very little to do with selfdefence or food procurement. It`s all about courting the ladies. I have never seen giant antlers on the bucks that attend our winter yard.

This photo was taken by John Sveinbjornson near his farmyard in the Good Spirit Lake area. Coyotes had half devoured the dead buck. Coyotes watched as John and his son-in-law freed the buck. To accomplish this, they had to rope the antlers to the hitch of a pickup and remove with a saw one of the tines of the live buck. The newly lopsided buck bounded off as if nothing had happened. Talk about a once in a lifetime experience!

Mature bucks are solitary creatures and only the yearlings and two-yearold bucks hang out with the ladies and fawns at the yard. Nonetheless the visual impact of even these small antlers is dramatic. Simply raising their heads results in an immediate submissive response in does or bucks with smaller antlers.

Bucks use their antlers to mark their territory. In the fall (during the rut) if you find trees or brush with broken lower branches there is a good chance it was a buck proclaiming his kingdom.

The dominant-aggressive behaviour engendered by a n t le r s c an h a v e tr ag ic consequences if antlers become “locked” during a sparring match. This invariably involves large, evenlymatched bucks.

The deer yard is usually policed by coyotes.

You might think the sight of such a scavenger would strike terror in a whitetail but the fact is healthy deer will almost ignore them walking through the herd.

As the winter progresses the deer even start putting the run on my dog who delights in chasing them earlier in the season. Several times I have been challenged by a buck as I was carrying a pail of oats for them.

I never force the issue. I learned this from the dogs and coyotes.

Every year the coyotes

do get rewarded for their patience. One can predict which deer will succumb.

I notice a lame one or one that is noticeably thinner than the rest and within a week I am almost sure to find its remains. Often as not the end happens right in the farmyard.

I wonder if the deer are seeking sanctuary from

what amounts to a horrible death as the coyotes chase them, biting them in the back legs until the unfortunate whitetail can no longer run.

I feel blessed to have the opportunity to observe these marvelous critters as I enjoy my morning coffee.

Convoy update: down to the wire, things are coming together

By Brian Zinchuk/ Pipeline News I N N I S FA I L , A l t a . – There have been some turns in the road, but it looks like there will indeed be a convoy gathering steam and trucks rolling across Western Canada right up to Parliament Hill, letting the government know the energy sector has had enough.

On February 14, most of the rubber is expected to hit the road, starting in Red Deer, Alta. After several fits and starts, a convoy of close to 300 units is coming together, according to organizer Glen Carritt, who spoke to Pipeline News on February 6.

The convoy will be leaving Red Deer on February 14. This is the day before the opening of the Winter Games, which kicks off in Red Deer on February 15.

But some trucks are expected to start rolling a d a y e a r l i e r, i n P e a c e River country in northwest Alberta and northeast British Columbia, so they can make it to Red Deer to join the rest of the group.

The route through Alberta starts at Red Deer at Gort’s Truck Wash at 8 a.m. on February 14. From there it passes Strathmore, Brooks and Medicine Hat before crossing into Saskatchewan on Highway No.1 around 2:30 p.m.

(Alberta time) It is expected to hit Gull Lake at 5 p.m. (now Saskatchewan time), then Swift Current

and arrive in Regina around 9 p.m. A few hotels have set aside blocks of rooms for booking, including one at Emerald Park, on Regina’s east side.

On February 15, the principal convoy is expected to depart Regina at 8 a.m., passing Moosomin at 10:30 and reaching Virden, Man., at about 11:30.

A group from southeast Saskatchewan is expected to congregate at the Fast Trucking Service yard in Carnduff the morning of February 15, departing at 8 a.m. It is expected to join up with the main convoy at Virden at 11:30.

Anyone from the southwest Manitoba oilfield will likely join in Virden at this time.

The convoy is anticipated to pass Winnipeg at 3:30 p.m. and the Ontario border at 5:15 p.m. It is expected to reach Kenora, Ont., at 7.p.m. (Ontario time) that evening, and stay overnight there.

This is a change from initial plans, which had noted Dryden, Ont. as the overnight layover location, due to a shortage of hotel space at Dryden.

On February 16, the group is expected to depart Kenora at 7 a.m., continuing on the TransCanada Highway along the northern shore of Lake Superior.

The convoy is expected to pass Thunder Bay at 1 p.m., Rossport at 3:30 p.m., Wawa at 6:30 p.m. and arrive at Sault. St. Marie at

February 18 is “a day of grace,” in case weather causes delays. Activities in Ottawa are expected to commence February 19 with a convoy to Parliament Hill in the morning.

Recognizing that some people might not be able to commit to the entire expedition, organizers are encouraging people to join the convoy at one of the points along the route and go along for as long as they are able, whether that’s city

to city or border to border.

Several enthusiastic participants have gone so far as to cover their vehicles with decals, a form of rolling billboard. Carritt’s fire truck is one of them.

For communications while en route, participants are encouraged to use the LADD 2 radio channel.

“I’ll be driving. I’ll be in my fire truck,” Carritt, owner of OP Fire & Safety, said.

Speeches at Parliament Hill will begin at 11 a.m. and the rally will carry on until 4 p.m. As it’s winter in Ottawa, participants are expected to dress for the outdoor weather. The permit for the rally indicates it will take place near the Centennial Flame and near the main stairs.

Not just oil and gas “This isn’t just oil and gas, this isn’t just the farming industry, this is all Canadians,” Jason Corbeil, the individual who has been organizing the trucks, said in a Facebook live broadcast on February 6.

Carritt said they will be coming back on February 20, from 10 a.m. to noon for a few more speeches and to ensure everything is cleaned up. After that, he expects the convoy to disperse and head back home on their own timing and accord, whether they choose to leave that day or the next day.

“We’re tired of the carbon tax. We’re tired of Bill C-69,” Carritt said in the same Facebook broadcast.

Sorting out the convoys The month of January was punctuated by some growing pains, as it were, in organizing a convoy to Ottawa. Initially there were two convoys planned, one under the banner of Yellow Vests, and a second by a coalition led by Canada Action. The Canada Action efforts ended on January 14, in large part because they did not want to be associated with any negative connotations affiliated with one of the issues some Yellow Vest supporters have been rallying behind, namely immigration

and the United Nations Migration Pact. So at that point it was down to one convoy, with the key rallying point being the Yellow Vest (Official) Convoy to Ottawa Facebook page.

However, in late January there was a schism in the leadership of that effort as well. Two of the key o rg a n i z e r s , C a r r i t t , a n Innisfail city councillor, and Corbeil, a service rig consultant, broke from the Yellow Vest (Official) Convoy group and reformed under the banner “United We Roll! Official Convoy for Canada!”

Under the new name, they aren’t saying those wearing yellow vests are not welcome, but they are no longer promoting that highly identifiable sign of protest, either.

Convoy organizers in southeast Saskatchewan, like Jay Riedel and David Grass, fell into lockstep behind Carritt and Corbeil.

A w e e k l a t e r, i t w a s evident that the efforts on the Yellow Vest (Official) Convoy to Ottawa Facebook page all but folded after the departure of Carritt and Corbeil, and the United We Roll group would be proceeding. It is their listing of the timeline and locations that is seen above in this story. A January 26 pinned post on the Yellow Vest (Official) Convoy page by its initial founder, C.J. Clayton, said, “We can’t fight the Liberals and our own people. The bickering has to stop.

We need to get trucks to Ottawa.”

Asked about this, Carritt said “The controversy has caused people to fall off.”

But the convoy is still rolling, nonetheless.

the longest maternity and adoption leave in Canada, said a release.

A total of 78 weeks of leave will be available to new mothers or can be shared between parents.

On top of the 19-week maternity leave, the province will extend parental leave from 34 to 59 weeks for the mother of a child, if she chooses to take the full leave. If another parent decides to take the entire leave or is collecting Employment Insurance benefits, they will see parental leave expand from 37 weeks to 63 weeks.

The government also announced a new critically ill adult leave which will offer 17 weeks for workers to care for critically ill adult family members.

Changes to the parental leave and the addition of a critically ill adult leave align job-protected leave provisions with benefits available through the federal Employment Insurance program.

“During a major life event, such as bringing a child into the family or assisting a loved one experiencing a serious illness, workers should not have to worry about job security,” said Don Morgan, labour relations and workp l a c e s a f e t y m i n i s t e r.

“Some of these amendments were also made to allow Saskatchewan workers to fully access benefits from the federal government.”

The government also extended the 10 days of interpersonal violence leave to include survivors of all forms of sexual violence. The time can be used to seek medical or legal help, access support services, or re-locate to a safe space.

Baby It’s Cold Outside

By Kaare Askildt I smile regarding all the controversy recently raised over the lyrics to the song Baby, It’s Cold Outside.

The song was written by Frank Loesser in 1944, to sing with his wife Lynn Garland to entertain the guests at their housewarming party when their guests were about to leave. Even though it wasn’t written with Christmas in mind, it has evolved to be included in the Christmas song repertoire.

The controversy is with regards to the lyrics, as some believe there are sexual under (or over) tones, as the female wants to leave and the male tries to keep her. I’ve read all the lyrics, and perhaps I’m too far removed from

the #metoo movement, because I failed to see any sexual allusions.

Then I said to myself, what about all the old folksongs that were made in the rural areas a long, long time ago. The songs went from mouth to mouth and were picked up by local artists who fine tuned them and even added some verses. The tune that comes to mind is the old Norwegian folk song Kjerringa Med Staven. (The Crone with The Staff). The text was first written down in the middle of the 1800s. I grew up with this song, and I never thought there was anything wrong with the lyrics, but let me look, perhaps it should be banned as well. The song is about a woman living in the mountains.

This might be abuse.

The crone has had her staff replaced by a twig.

And there is no bridging to cross the stream.

Furthermore, she had to make her own porridge while wearing her wet clothes.

Og så vart ho vare jutulad’n då - And then she became aware of the troll valley.

What was the woman doing sitting on a steep slope with the large wooden spoon that she had obviously eaten her porridge with? Then she noticed all the troll hunks down in the valley, but the trolls didn’t pay her any attention.

A bold man proposed to her while she was slaving away, suggesting that she make the coffee and he’d carry the water from the

well. She kept on with her hard work.

We l l , I d i d n ’ t f i n d anything in the text that would upset the #metoo people. Furthermore, back in the old days calling a woman a Kjerring (crone) wasn’t at all derogatory, at least not as it is today.

However, she was lonely tending to livestock way up in the mountain, and grabbed the opportunity to get married. It has a happy ending, so guess this song would be safe.

The crone was carrying the milk in a pail on her head, heading to the market. Striding along she calculated how she would spend the money. “I’ll buy some hens from farmer Hansen,” she thought, “they will produce eggs that I’ll sell to the baker, and with the money I get from the eggs, I’ll buy myself a new outfit and go visit the big city of Lillehammer.”

As she was thinking this, she made a proud toss with her head, causing the pail to fly off her head and spilling all the milk.

The moral of the story: Don’t count your chickens before they are hatched.

Celebrate family day weekend with free fishing weekend With Saskatchewan’s Family Day holiday fast approaching, residents and visitors are encouraged to participate in the annual winter free fishing weekend from February 16 to 18. Each year in conjunction with Family Day, people are encouraged to try ice fishing at no cost and enjoy Saskatchewan’s natural beauty in the winter.

Residents and visitors may fish in any waterbody that has an open sport fishing season without purchasing a fishing license, said a release.

Anglers are reminded to use cau tion and common sense, and always put safety first when going out on the ice.

This includes testing the ice thickness before one travels on it. A minimum of 10 cm of good ice is required for walking and 30 cm for light vehicle travel, the release said.

Anyone planning to take advantage of free fishing weekend is reminded that all other fishing regulations, including possession limits and reduced limits on some lakes and rivers, remain in effect.

Free fishing weekend does not apply in national parks and anyone planning to take fish out of the province must purchase a license, it said.
