Canora Skating Club carnival celebrates “lucky Las Vegas” The Canora Skating Club presented its annual carnival with the “lucky theme of Las Vegas” on March 17 at the Canora Civic Centre.

About 150 people of all ages were in attendance, said Candace Doogan, one of the organizers.

Skaters who performed in groups were: Paisley Wolkowski, Heidi Parmley, Isabelle Chabun, Rhianna Stefanyshyn, Madison Dutchak and Marah Collingridge (Poker F a c e , L e t ’s G o To L a s Vegas); Erika Sweeney, Jania Predinchuk and Callie Sznerch (Leaving Las Vegas, Rich Girl); Rori Love, Chloe Doogan, Sam

performed by: Maranda Donovan (Ace of Hearts), Hayden Parmley (Vegas Baby), Kaylie Donovan (Money, Money, Money) and Mya Wolos (House of Cards, Waking up in Vegas.)

The guest skater was Sydney Kotzer of Yorkton, the granddaughter of Leonard and Winnie Kopelchuk of Canora.

“She did two numbers,” said Doogan, “and joined in the Grande Finale with the entire Club.” Costumes for the carnival included an Elvis, a Michael Jackson, a c o w b o y, t h e J u n i o r Showgirls, and the Vegas Golden Knights hockey team.

Doogan said the event would not have been possible without the efforts of Leona Kitchen, instructor, “who spends countless hours teaching Canora and area youth to learn to skate whether it be in figure skating or hockey. She definitely is a pillar in our community and always wears a smile. The kids adore her.”

Miranda Donovan, Kaylie Donovan, Mya Wolos, Hayden Parmley, Courtney Sheptak and Reegan Stefanyshyn were program assistants.

Doogan said Carmen Wolkowski, another program organizer, played an important role in the success

of the carnival.

“She put in a lot of time and effort collecting costumes and the beautiful dresses from her friends in the community,” said Doogan. “The club does not own much for costumes so we as a group try to make it as cost-efficient as possible for our skaters and their families. The connections that Carmen has with dance groups and others is a huge benefit to our club.”

Flowers were available at the carnival, for those in attendance to buy as gifts “for their special skaters.”

Doogan acknowledged all the skaters for putting on a wonderful show and the

volunteers for putting the carnival together.

She said the club is looking for new members for the 2019/2020 season.

“It is very economical, we don’t do a lot of fundraising and the carnival is only one of the highlights.

As a group, we plan to expand on our numbers and perhaps introduce some new ideas for next year. Every child should have the opportunity to learn how to skate, and the club accepts children as young as three years of age.”

“Looking forward to next season already,” she concluded.

RCMP traffic stop for motorists in Canora

An RCMP traffic stop was held on Highway No. 9 in Canora on March 20 as part of a joint initiative between Canora and Kamsack detachments. Sgt. Erin Lockyer, RCMP Yorkton Traffic, said traffic stops were taking place in numerous communities across the Canora and Kamsack detachment areas over a four-day period, including Crystal Lake, Amsterdam, Pelly, Cote, Hyas and others. Checks were carried out for a variety of purposes, focusing on: mechanical fitness of vehicles, document checks for valid license and registration, proper use of child seats and other restraints, breath tests and more.

Lockyer said they had discovered a number of suspended drivers among the vehicles that were stopped.

RCMP request public assistance after truck stolen in Preeceville

was stolen from a property near Preeceville. The pickup truck didn’t have an attached licence plate but had the plate

showing inside the truck out of the back window.

Canadian Folk Music Award-winners to appear in concert As the third and final concert in the 2018/19 Stars for Saskatchewan Concert Series, James Hill and Anne Janelle will be performing on April 3 in Canora, presented by the Canora Arts Council.

Since their Canadian Folk Music Award-winning album True Love Don’t Weep, ukulele/cello duo Hill and Janelle have bought their “crystal clear sound filled with warmth” (Bob Mersereau, CBC Radio) to audiences in over 15 countries, according to information from the duo’s website.

A mixture of traditional

tunes with “fresh vitality” (Country Music People) and, for the first time, original songs, True Love Don’t Weep showcased the duo’s ability “to capture the soul of a song” (Folk World.) By this time, the pair were performing regularly, bringing their “instinctive musical interaction and contagious enthusiasm” (Ottawa Citizen) to audiences across five continents.

It’s true: opposites attract. Hill grew up playing folk, jazz and blues on his ukulele while Janelle was exclusively a classical cellist. But the pair’s

Town Council approves museum grants and renews bylaw enforcement services The approval of nonprofit museum grants and the renewal of bylaw enforcement services were among the items of concern to town council at its regular meeting on March 19.

Council approved the following non-profit museum grants for 2019: $2,500 for the Canora Ukrainian Heritage Museum and $1,000 for the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the

Holy Trinity Museum.

Council renewed the agreement with Commissionaires to provide bylaw enforcement services within the Town of Canora to April 30, 2020.

Council authorized Aaron Herriges, leisure services director, to attend the recreation practitioners’ meeting on March 27 in Yorkton.

Council tabled the request of Canora Composite School to contribute to the cost of a mobile classroom

Truck driver involved in Broncos crash sentenced to eight years Jessica R. Durling / Tisdale Recorder MELFORT — Jaskirat Singh Sidhu, the driver of a semi-truck that collided with the Humboldt Broncos team bus, has been sentenced to a total of eight years in jail.

He is also prohibited from operating a motor vehicle in Canada or owning a firearm for 10 years plus any time of imprisonment.

“This collision was avoidable,” said Judge Inez Cardinal during the sentencing, which took place in Melfort March 22.

“Jaskirat Singh Sidhu was solely responsible for this collision as evidenced by the forensic accident report.

He missed key indicators of an approaching intersection and his prolonged inattention resulted in the deaths of 16 people and caused bodily harm to 13 others.

“I find Mr. Sidhu’s moral blameworthiness to be high, especially considering his prolonged inattentiveness while operating a large, loaded semi and the

tragic consequences that flowed from his actions.

These offences require a strong message of deterrence and denunciation be sent to ensure Mr. Sidhu never operates a vehicle in such a dangerous manner,

and that others, especially operators of large vehicles, understand that the dangerous operations of a motor vehicle will result in lengthy sentences of imprisonment.

Provincial budget solid and honest but less memorable When one looks back at this Saskatchewan Party government, it seems unlikely that 2019-20 budget will be all that memorable.

That’s usually reserved for budgets that have either a lot of goodies or a lot of pain. This budget really has neither.

Consider this year’s assortment of highway upgrade goodies for rural residents: • twinning of Highway No. 7 at Vanscoy • completing Saskatoon to Delisle twinning • two sets of passing lanes west of Rosetown on Highway No. 7 • passing lane on Highway No. 2 north of Moose Jaw • passing lanes will be completed on Highways No. 6 and 39 between Regina and Estevan • on Highways No. 9 and 10 between Canora and Melville passing lanes will be started • 32 kilometres of repaving of Highway No. 1 west of Tompkins • 24 kilometres of Highway No. 9 repaving north of Usherville • 26 kilometres of Highway No. 10 repaving east of Fort Qu’Appelle, and • 23 kilometres on Highway No. 15 repaving west of Kenaston.

But this isn’t the massive lists we’ve seen in past years, partly due to re-prioritizing highways dollars to the new Enhanced Intersection Safety program that will see $13 million spent on what will be a $65 million program in the next five years.

New turning lanes, better lighting, rumble strips and clearer sight lines don’t necessarily provide government with the

same-bang-for-your-buck as laying down new asphalt under your tires.

But in the wake of last year’s Humboldt Broncos bus crash, it can be argued what the government is now doing is more important.

Moreover, there is less money to go around.

Finance Minister Donna Harpauer’s 2019-20 budget has only allotted $439-million for highways and infrastructure capital works, considerably less than the $673 million in this year’s 2018-19 budget that’s wrapping up. And the budget suggests we will only see $339 million in capital highways infrastructure spending for each of the three years to follow.

But we are also seeing a $34.4 million surplus in the 201920 budget and the Sask. Party says to expect surpluses of $49 million, $72 million and $82 million in the years to follow.

(However, one should be a little suspicious here, because there’s really no way a government can predict surpluses that far in advance.)

Compare that with the $380 million deficit in the 2018-19 budget, according to the third-quarter update also released last

Compare plans for four surplus budgets in Saskatchewan with the four straight deficits since Saskatchewan’s last surplus budget in 2014-15.

That string of deficits has increased the debt service charge (the interest on the “credit card bill” we owe the bond companies for past accumulated deficits) to $694 million, an annual budgetary cost that hasn’t been this much in Saskatchewan since the aftermath of the Grant Devine government years.

Clearly, big capital spending and operational deficits have been taking their toll in this province. Public debt is $19.9 billion right now and is expected to rise to a record $26 billion in 2023.

Yes, we were hammered by the PST hike to six per cent two years ago and big-time cuts like the shuttering of the Saskatchewan Transportation Company.

But it’s also become clear this is something because it clearly can no longer rely on resource revenue windfalls it enjoyed a decade ago.

In fact, resources revenues that once accounted for 20 per cent of all government revenue only accounts for $1.8 billion of the $15 billion 2019-20 budget.

And it wouldn’t even be that much if it weren’t for an additional $117 million increase in potash revenue that can almost exclusively be attributed to long-overdue elimination of the Saskatchewan Resource Credit, which is essentially a change to tax laws.

There’s not a lot of goodies. There’s not a lot of harm.

But it’s a responsible, honest budget and should be remembered as such.

Price at the pumps causes concern for reader The price at the pumps has jumped 10 cents this week for no apparent reason other than to overflow the already full coffers of the fossil fuel royalty; and not a word of complaint by Andrew Scheer with an equal deafening silence from Scott Moe. They must be saving their wrath for the end of the month when fuel prices will rise 3 per cent for the refundable carbon tax.

Any increase in prices is volatile to an already

stretched bank account; volatile to the ability to meet the demands of this debtdrowning life style of consumerism we have embraced so enthusiastically. We have embraced it to our peril, possibly even to our extinction if you can believe the climate scientists who have made it their life’s work to study and report the environmental destruction that our out-of-control consumerism has accomplished and seems

determined to push us over that point of no return.

While the handmaidens of the fossil fuel goliaths’ refuse to jeopardize their political careers by seriously calling into question the environmental destruction they preside over, Mother Earth flounders. The ice caps melt, the oceans rise, cold becomes colder, hot becomes hotter, extinctions multiply, storms insist on increasing in strength and devastation

while the handmaidens in politics strategically turn a blind eye.

Party politics and its obedience by our elected MPs is not progressive. Free votes should be the rule. There should no party whip, no omnibus bills laden with hidden agendas, no lying politicians or cover ups. Lobbying for profit should be abolished as should political donations from any entity other than Canadian citizens and those

donations should be limited to the affordability of the commoners that make up the country.

The commoners that most suffer from the intensifying environmental fury must speak in union. Even our children have more clarity about the oncoming storms and are speaking up. Time is no longer short, it is here. We can no longer follow these handmaidens of capitalist empire whose allure and

ambitions are destroying the life-giving capacity of our planet. As a human race with the gift of self determination given to us by creation, we must mature ahead of these environmental disasters, ahead of our failing representative democracy and the environmental destruction it allows.

We must and act, and we must act now.

Parties in government criticized for misuse of power I am sure most people were shocked, as was I, with the SNC Lavalin scandal that is unfolding before us.

It is corruption to the core when political influence to change the rules is exerted in the name of saving political donors. In my opinion, this is abhorrent abuse of power and must not be tolerated.

Why then are we allowing it to happen at the provincial level? It doesn’t seem to matter what party is in power but money seems to get you access to the

Premier.

The NDP governments of Romanow and Calvert put forward “most available hours.” The Saskatchewan Party has done its fair share of work for its donors.

Recent cases involving insurance companies seeking cash out limits for universal life policies and of course the much publicized Brandt developments in Wascana Park in Regina are examples.

Clearly, the optics of big donor money may have played a role in some of

these issues. Why then aren’t we demanding some accountability here?

Between 2007 and 2017 Saskatchewan tax credits issued for political donations was $45,216,378. In 2017 the Saskatchewan party received $1,797,426 and the NDP received $973,401.

If we assumed the average total tax credit at 60 per cent of total 2017 donations to those parties it would mean Saskatchewan taxpayers subsidized political donors to the tune of $1,662,496.

It’s a win-win for some donors wanting government business and political parties wanting cash. However, 2017 was a year where we saw tax increases and program cuts. Interestingly enough the political donor tax credit was not a casualty of these cuts.

Perhaps we need to rethink policy in this area.

Why should a donor to a political party get a bigger tax credit than a donor to charity? In an era of economic struggle, why do political

parties come out unscathed?

When certain companies are in litigation how do they gain access to the Premier, changes to law or sweetheart deals merely by a petition from companies some of whom may be political donors?

If it’s wrong for Justin Trudeau why is it not wrong f o r S c o t t M o e o r Ry a n Meili? We really need to look at alternatives.

Do we need to give a tax credit for political donations at all? Should it be the same

as charitable donations?

Should we just limit donation levels or do we ban any corporation who donates to a political party from bidding on government contracts?

These are all worthy questions that should be considered. In the meantime its business as usual in the new Saskatchewan.

We can’t wait for the change, we must create it.

Canora-Pelly MLA pleased with improved wireless services The Government of Saskatchewan understands having access to advanced and reliable communications services has become increasingly important to succeed in the modern world, especially in rural areas.

To date, SaskTel has done an excellent job bringing world-class communication technologies to residents across the province

by covering 99 per cent of the population with wireless and internet services.

However, we also understand there are still rural parts of the province that are under served.

It is my pleasure to inform you that on March 20, SaskTel announced improved wireless services in Ebenezer with the launch of a small cell site solution. SaskTel continues to

find innovative solutions to deliver its services in rural areas and I’m extremely pleased that residents in my constituency will benefit from the improved coverage this new small site will deliver.

By March 31, the small cell sites will expand SaskTel’s LTE network coverage to 50 communities.

As construction continues, SaskTel will deploy small

cell site solutions to approximately 100 rural communities by the end of 2020.

To date, SaskTel has announced 91 of the selected communities. When finalized, the remaining municipalities will be announced.

This launch is part of Phase 2 of the Government of Saskatchewan’s multi-phase project.

Open letter to Honourable Minister Jim Reiter We a r e w r i t i n g t o you to address the lack of universal coverage of Mifegymiso, also known as the medical abortion pill, in Saskatchewan.

Currently, many patients seeking Mifegymiso are required to cover the cost of the medication out-ofpocket. This can cost the patient anywhere from $300 to $450. This is unaffordable for the many Saskatchewan residents who do not hold third-party insurance coverage or meet the beneficiary requirements under the Saskatchewan Drug Plan (including younger women, those of lower socioeconomic status, and/or those who are lower or middle income, for whom an unexpected $400 expense is impossible.)

Additionally, many private insurance formularies do not include Mifegymiso or will only cover a portion of the high cost, so having third-party insurance does not guarantee access.

As surgical abortion is a fully covered service for people with Saskatchewan Health, we believe that by not covering the cost of Mifegymiso, Saskatchewan is in violation of the tenet of universality in the Canadian Health Act. Furthermore, the billing code for provision of medical abortion was recently removed in Saskatchewan, meaning Saskatchewan healthcare providers are not being appropriately compensated for providing Mifegymiso which could deter those in a busy

practice from prescribing it.

As a medically necessary service, abortion must be fully covered by Saskatchewan Health, in accordance with the Canada Health Act. By refusing to cover the cost of medical abortions, Saskatchewan is in violation of the tenet of accessibility in the Canada Health Act. Approximately one in three Canadian women will have an abortion during their lifetime, making it an incredibly common reproductive procedure.

The majority of Canadian provinces provide universal coverage of Mifegymiso, leaving Saskatchewan as one of only two provinces that do not.

This means that the people of Saskatchewan are

receiving unequal access to healthcare compared to the vast majority of Canadians.

This is of great significance in Saskatchewan, a province consisting of numerous rural and remote communities where access to reproductive healthcare is critically limited.

In Saskatchewan, surgical abortion is only available in two centers, Saskatoon and Regina, which means many people are forced to travel extended distances while in a vulnerable state to access these services.

Providing universal coverage of Mifegymiso could mean that women would be able to access their early abortion care in their home community. The prohibitive cost of Mifegymiso forces the hands of these women,

driving them to make decisions based on finance and not what is best for them, their health, and their families.

No one should be denied access because of their postal code or their income.

Mifegymiso has the potential to drastically improve reproductive health in this province if it is covered by Saskatchewan Health.

The freedom to choose the health option that is right for you is a central p r i n c i p l e o f t h e Wo r l d H e a l t h O r g a n i z a t i o n ’s definition of the Right to Health. The people of Saskatchewan should have the option to choose the method of termination, just as the rest of Canadians do.

Mifegymiso is an effective and safe option

for termination of early pregnancy. Every woman in Saskatchewan should have the right to choose the healthcare option that is right for her.

By not providing universal access to Mifegymiso, the Government of Saskatchewan is restricting access to this essential health procedure.

McTeigue goes on to share this witty remark by Samuel Johnson who was viewing the magnificent Palace of Versailles, “The trouble with a place like this is that it makes it too difficult to die.”

Uncertain Chinese canola market muddles seeding plans for farmers across the Prairies The ongoing issues with canola exports to China have Prairie producers adding a wild card to the deck as they prepare to deal out their 2019 cropping intentions.

Canada’s trade diversification minister has come out with a statement calling on the Chinese government to “show us the evidence” of alleged impurities it used as justification for yanking Richardson International Ltd.’s canola export licence,

detailed a recent Star Phoenix story.

“The Canadian Food Inspection Agency inspected this canola, said it was of high quality as is the nature of the product that we export. The Chinese say that it has impurities. We say to the Chinese, ‘Show us. Show us a sample,’” Jim Carr said.

It is more than likely the so-called impurities are nothing more than the Chinese government putting

some trade pressure on Canada as a way to show strength regarding issues between the two countries which have nothing to do with agricultural trade.

But, short term the commodity can certainly be a political football, which can raise some questions for farmers here headed to spring planting.

Farmers have never had control over political posturing using agricultural products as a hammer, and they have even less control over weather.

Is a forecast in December a guarantee? Of course not, but it does suggest some reason for concern.

While the Chinese situation could be solved long before the 2019 crop is harvested and ready for sale, and weather has a tendency to moderate closer to the actual date of a forecast, the two factors do suggest canola could face some definite production and marketing challenges in 2019.

Motorists encouraged to Slow Down Move Over The Kamsack Volunteer Fire Department (FVFD) participated in a traffic awareness exercise, the “Slow Down Move Over” campaign, on Highway No. 9, south of Canora.

Fire departments from Canora, Rhein, Ebenezer and Kamsack were in attendance on March 7, along with tow trucks from Canora and Yorkton and members of the Canora RCMP. “The exercise was to make the motoring public be aware of emergency vehicles and to slow down when approaching and passing emergency vehicles with emergency lights activated,” said Ken Thompson, KVFD fire chief.

The latest fatality in Saskatchewan was a volu n teer f ir ef ig h ter f r om Rosetown who was struck by a semi while operating at the scene of a minor motor vehicle accident.

“While you are driving, please watch what is going on around you,” Thomson said. “There are people in attendance with emergency vehicles, and they risk their lives for you. At the end of the day, they too want to go home to their families.”

The Kamsack, Canora, Rhein and Ebenezer Volunteer Fire Departments, along with emergency vehicles and RCMP participated in a traffic awareness campaign called Slow Down Move Over on Highway No. 9, south of Canora, on March 7.

The yellow vest moniker is so tainted now, no one wants anything to do with it When oilfield protests swept across oil country in December, there was immediately a symbol associated with them, the high visibility yellow vest.

The connection to the oil patch was immediately evident. Everyone who works in the field has either a yellow high visibility vest in their truck or high visibility stripes on their coveralls.

Around the same time France was, and still is, in an uproar against its government. In France, it is now a requirement to keep a yellow vest in your vehicle, to be worn when changing a tire or what not, as a sign of distress. They are mad at their government, so it was their sign of distress.

But France’s issues were not the Canadian oilfield’s, and the prevalence of violence at yellow vest protests in France was not something people wanted to replicate here.

Here, the yellow vest also became its own rallying point; a uniform, as it were, of those upset with the federal Liberal government. But right from the get go, there have been issues.

For most, if not all wearing the yellow vests, key issues have been the federal government’s killing of the Northern Gateway and

Energy East Pipelines, as well as their flubbing of the Trans Mountain Expansion.

Then there’s the carbon tax. For many in southeast Saskatchewan, the government’s planned phase out of coal-fired power generation is huge.

But even at the earliest protests, some people started carrying signs and talking about issues that just didn’t fit with all the energy concerns. They were concerned about migrants, and many were quick to point out, illegal migrants. They were carrying signs decrying the United Nations. Some people seemed to think the United Nations is going to take over Canada, as part of some sort of “one-world government.”

And it is on these migration issues, I knew right away, the yellow vest brand would be heading to the dustbin of history.

I pointed out to many of those involved that talking energy and migration isn’t like they’re talking apples

and oranges, they’re talking apples and sausages.

They’re not even the same food group. And any talk about migration was going to take away from the energy message, because no matter what you say, people are going to associate this talk with racism.

I first said that on D e c e m b e r 1 5 . I w a s n ’t wrong.

And from what I saw on multiple Facebook pages associated with the Yellow Vest movement, I absolutely was not wrong. I don’t know if the toxic content was 40 per cent, 10 per cent, 1 per cent or 0.1 per cent, but there was enough of it, and people cheering it on, to paint the yellow vest with a black brush. And, as I suspected would happen, other media picked up on that and ran with it.

This first occurred in Saskatchewan at the one in early January, where Premier Scott Moe joined a number of other speakers on the steps of the Legislature in a -30 C wind chill. It happened again in Moosomin a month later, when Moe was joined by New Brunswick Premier Blaine Higgs and federal Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer at a rally in Moosomin.

Other groups in Alberta also distanced themselves from the yellow vests.

Canada Action was involved in both of these prominent Saskatchewan rallies, and they cancelled their planned convoy to Ottawa because they didn’t want to be affiliated with the yellow vest.

The remaining Yellow

Convoy to Ottawa. While those who chose to wear yellow vests were not told to stay home, any talk about the United Nations and migration was definitely at the periphery.

Now I am catching wind of a third wave of protests, and there is one thing that has been emphasized; no yellow vests. There’s no equivocation on this point.

This is not rebranding.

These people do not want to be associated at all with any of the negative connotations, specifically regarding immigration, that have been associated with the yellow vests. But they want their voices heard.

Why? For exactly the reason I said in mid-December.

They’re not even the same

food group. Energy and migration have nothing to do with each other. For those of us in the energy industry, we’re in the fight of our lives. While the United States is setting production records each month and now setting export records, we’ve been so hamstrung by the federal Liberals, we worry if our jobs and businesses can survive.

Many haven’t.

We worry because our only client for our oil may soon not need us much longer. Their production is rising so quickly, they might decide they don’t want, or need, all our oil anymore.

And without Energy East, Northern Gateway and Trans Mountain, we have no way of selling our oil to anyone else. That’s what we’re worried about. Our only client has now become our biggest competitor.

When you add the everincreasing carbon tax on everything, and the phase-out of coal, you know that this government not only does not care about our industry, but is doing all it can to hurt it. And us.

That’s why there will be a third wave of protests, and a fourth, and a fifth. But the yellow vest will fade to the background, as the real issues come to the fore.

CCS drama to present A Tolstoy Story and Check Please Canora Composite School (CCS) senior and junior drama will be presenting two productions on April 2 at Canora Composite School auditorium.

CCS junior drama (Grades 5 to 8) will be performing A Tolstoy Story, a comedy/drama by playwright V. Glasgow Koste, directed by Simone Homeniuk. That will be followed by the senior drama (Grades 9 to 12) presentation of Check Please, a comedy by playwright Jonathan Rand, with Andrew Hoffman as director.

The CCS 2020 Europe Trip is catering the evening to bring Russian, Doukhobor and Ukrainian charm to the evening along with a three course Russian meal.

As guests dine, Russian folk songs will accompany a slide show presentation on Leo Tolstoy and his

connection to the Doukhobor settlement in Veregin, said Homeniuk.

“There are 30 CCS students who have roles in A Tolstoy Story play,” she said.

“A total of 43 students originally auditioned, so interest in junior drama was high this year. The talent in Grades 5 to 8 is unbelievable and worth checking out.”

Homeniuk said A Tolstoy Story was chosen because of Leo Tolstoy’s influence on the creation of this play and because of his historical impact on the Canora region.

“This play is about random stories that are told,” she said. “We tell each other stories to make sense of our everyday lives. Sometimes they make sense and sometimes they only sort of do.”

Auditions took place in the first two weeks of January in front of the director and

the Grade 9 CCS drama production team: Lexie Biletski, Alexa Burym, Brody Harrison, Isabella Mykytyshyn, Abigail Wilson and Mya Wolos.

“These six students have worked to help cast members with voice projection, line memorization, positioning, costumes, music, advertising posters, lights and set,” said Homeniuk. “Abigail has furthermore dedicated many Monday noon hours to help choreograph a Russian Kalinka dance that will be performed at the end of the Junior Drama performance.

She has also interviewed each cast member and created the program for this performance.

“Drea Beblow, Cheyenne Fediuk, Shannyn Hamm, Samantha Parker and Elizabeth Spence-Gaines all volunteered their time to help

draw and paint the backdrop for this play.”

Homeniuk saluted these students for sharing their skills and being peer role models for the younger students at CCS. Check Please, presented

by CCS senior drama, is a comedy about a series of blind dates “gone terribly, terribly wrong.” The entire performance takes place in a restaurant, said Hoffman.

Rehearsals started in late February, and are being held several times a week as the performance approaches.

“Since there are no more than two people involved in any given scene, we don’t have to have everyone be there for every rehearsal,” he said. “It’s given us some welcome flexibility.”

A total of seven actors are in the cast.

Winter Fun Day an opportunity for CCS students and teachers to play in the snow On March 20, the Canora Composite School SRC (Students’ Representative Council) held a Winter Fun Day for the entire student body.

The purpose was simply for staff and students to have a great time together, according to Dustin Nielsen, teacher.

“It is a chance for

students to spend some time and have fun with their teachers and classmates outside of the traditional classroom setting,” said Nielsen.

“We had an absolute blast and were blessed with beautiful weather.”

Each homeroom was challenged with the task of building their own sculpture.

Grade 6 students, supervised by Jennifer Sleeva, teacher, sculpted the Easter bunny and some Easter eggs during Winter Fun Day on March 20.

Sculptures included: a Tim Hortons coffee cup and doughnut, the Easter Bunny and some Easter eggs, a tribute to the Cougars senior girls basketball team members as they were about to head off to HOOPLA in Saskatoon, a Cougars snowman and several others.

It looks like a number CSS students enjoy their Tim Hortons. The Grade 11 class taught by Thomas Lowes sculpted a coffee cup accompanied by a donut for Winter Fun Day on March 20. Canora resident to speak at YFBTA Spring Event in Saltcoats Kristen Gabora of Canora, Central Canada trail development manager at TransCanada Trail (TCT), will be one of the presenters at the Yellowhead Flyway Birding Trail Association (YFBTA) Spring Event in Saltcoats on April 13.

The Great Trail is a network connecting more than 15,000 communities across Canada. According to its website, it “is the longest recreational trail in the world…It offers a variety of landscapes; urban, rural and wilderness, along greenways, waterways and roadways.”

Volunteers came up with the idea of a trail that would stretch across the country nearly 25 years ago. It was

completed coast-to-coast in 2017.

“My hope is that people get out and experience what The Great Trail has to offer,” said Gabora.

In recent years, there has been a change in names.

TCT is the national organization that works with local groups, provincial parks, First Nations and municipalities, the actual owners and operators of their particular sections of the trail.

TCT does not own the land on which the trail is located.

Rather, its role is to promote the use of The Great Trail and offer grants for maintenance, signage and trail enhancement.

“One of our most recent projects was the completion of the boardwalk at the Ravine Ecological Preserve in Yorkton,” Gabora explained. “It is a unique

structure that can withstand the weather and flooding.”

The venture was a partnership with the City of Yo r k t o n . T C T g r a n t e d $35,000 to the project while the City agreed to contribute an additional amount to a maximum of $65,000.

“The Great Trail gives residents and tourists the opportunity to be physically active in the outdoors,” said

Randy Goulden, executive director of Tourism Yorkton.

In addition to the trail, visitors can tour the site of the homestead of the Dulmage family, early settlers in the Yorkton area.”

At the Spring Event, Gabora will tell the story of The Great Trail, not everything as the title might suggest. After all, the trail is 24,000 kilometers long. Her

presentation will provide information about the trail in general and nearby sections in particular.

Other presenters will include: • Dr. L. Robbin Lindsay: Ticks, Talk and Related Diseases, Public Health Agency of Canada • Joan Feather: Birds of

Preeceville rink captures A event at Canora Ladies Bonspiel The Minnie Zimmer team from Preeceville took first place in the A event at the Canora Ladies Bonspiel, held from March 14 to 16.

A total of eight teams from Canora, Preeceville, Norquay, Springside and Kamsack were involved in the event, which was encouraging to see after the event was cancelled last year due to lack of interest, said Judy Schick, organizer.

Zimmer defeated the Eleanor Murray rink of Canora in the A side final.

(second) and Agnes Dubelt (lead.)

The third game of the series was scheduled for March 24 in Moosomin with the fourth game in Preeceville on March 26. If a fifth and deciding game is required, it is set for March 28 in Moosomin.

“In game one our guys came out flying, and I think they really put a surprise to Moosomin who had swept their way through the playoffs so far, and only had one regular season loss.

Our players really stuck to the game plan, so it was a

real boost of confidence to start the series off,” said Kirby Pankratz, coach.

“The second game was a lot more of the same except the game was filled with a lot more penalties t o b o t h t e a m s . We l o s t our composure on quite a few occasions, and yet we still out shot them badly.

As much that went wrong there were many positives too, and we’ll reflect on that in our practices up to next Sunday’s game three in Moosomin. It was just an unfortunate mistake that kept us from getting into overtime in a game that was looking so promising,” concluded Pankratz.

Player tempers flared up numerous times during the second game of the Preeceville Pats (white jerseys) versus Moosomin series in the run for the A banner held in Preeceville on March 17.

Cougars win regional final to advance to HOOPLA for second straight year After enduring a drought that lasted from 2005 to 2018, the Canora Cougars senior girls basketball team has advanced to the HOOPLA provincial finals for the second year in a row.

The Cougars qualified for HOOPLA with two decisive victories at regionals in Canora on March 15 and 16, said Curtis Baillie, coach.

Providing leadership for the Canora squad were Jill Gulka, Felicity Mydonick and Mackenzie Gulka, team captains and Grade 12 students playing in their final home games for the Cougars.

“A big thank you to everyone who showed up to cheer us on,” said Baillie.

“The girls absolutely love playing for a packed house.

The energy they receive from hearing the home town fans roar after a basket is awesome. We have the best supporters.”

In the semifinal game against Redvers, the Cougars bolted to a quick lead with the first eight points of the game, and built the advantage to 42 to 23 after the first half.

Redvers continued to play hard, but in the end the Cougars prevailed by a final score of 75 to 54.

In the other semifinal, Rosthern Junior College defeated Foam Lake, the same team which the Cougars faced in the regional final in the two previous years,

both held in Canora.

Unlike the 2018 final, where the Cougars trailed throughout, only to tie the game late and then win it in overtime, this year’s final was never really in doubt.

Canora started fast and dominated offensively, defensively, and in rebounding. The host team built up a 28 to 4 advantage on the scoreboard after the first quarter, continued to add to the lead throughout, and won by a final score of 81 to 43 to guarantee a spot at HOOPLA. “We played well today, and moved the ball around especially well,” said Jill Gulka after the win.

“It seems surreal to be going to HOOPLA again,” said Mydonick. “We’ve been working for this all season and before that, since Grade 7 really, when most of us started playing junior basketball. It’s so good to be rewarded.”

“Last year didn’t end like we wanted when we lost at HOOPLA,” recalled Mackenzie Gulka. “But it was good motivation for us to win regionals again this year and get back there.”

Wi t h n i n e r e t u r n i n g players, this year’s Canora team members have had the advantage of knowing each other extremely well all season long, said Jill.

“The whole team hangs out together a lot,” she explained. “We communicate really well both off and on the court. We know each

As the only graduating players, all three captains agreed that they couldn’t have asked for a better way to end their final Cougars home game.

Baillie said it was a great feeling to be heading back to HOOPLA. “The season starts with

roughly 35 to 40 teams in the 2A division all trying to claim one of the four spots in the provincial tournament at HOOPLA,” he said.

“We learned a lot from l a s t y e a r ’s e x p e r i e n c e there. It’s a whole new atmosphere with announcers calling the fouls, the time outs, and who scored. The

music is playing throughout the game, and the bleachers are always full. The majority of our team got to witness that last year, so this year it won’t come as such a big surprise. We will be somewhat used to that stage. We are excited to be back. We have unfished business from last year, where we lost both games

and didn’t medal. We are going to try and change that this year.”

Heading into HOOPLA, the Cougars had only suffered one loss all season.

That was to the Wynyard Golden Bears, the team which was scheduled to face the Cougars in the first game at HOOPLA on March 22 in Saskatoon.

• Keep all cannabis products, including homemade edibles (e.g., gummy bears, brownies), out of the sight and reach of children. If they can see it and reach it, they could eat it. Children will not be able to see or taste the difference between a cannabis edible and a regular treat.

An edible may taste really good, and a child may eat a large amount quickly.

• Never consume cannabis in any form in front of children, either for medical or recreational purposes.

Children like to imitate the actions of adults.

Duct tape art turns viral for two young entrepreneurs Brothers Carter and Wyatt Scheller, 11 and nine years of age respectively, of the Ketchen area never dreamed that their unique craft idea of duct tape art would turn viral.

“It all began with a craft project in 2016, that the boys could do to give away as Christmas presents,”, said Angela Scheller, mom. “ We originally purchased a kit online and researched different ideas through Pinterest online. In the beginning the boys made wallets, flower rings as well as some flower pens that they gave away to their cousins at Christmas,” she said.

Through encouragement and requests from other family members and friends, the duo made more creations. The boys were

The boys began making more and decided to concentrate on making pens only. The pens were available for sale at the Sturgis Library where their grandmother Helen Scheller works, by request and at Hazel Blooms greenhouse. Every dollar from each pen sold at the library and greenhouse was given to back to each organization. The boys had a tough time keeping up with the demand as the pens quickly sold out frequently.

“This past February we decided for 30 days we would sell and give a

dollar to Paws and Claws and when the 30 days was up on March 14 we extended that until March 31.

The pens at the library are still currently being sold with one dollar still going to the library and a dollar to Paws and Claws. So just until March 31, will we fundraise for the shelter.

The organization invited us to an adoption day where we had the opportunity to spend some time with the animals,” said Scheller.

“The people at Paws and Claws were so great with the boys at making them welcome. That really helps with getting the younger generations involved with organizations such as this that need more volunteers.

They have invited the boys back to any adoption days to help, not just making pens but to come and snuggle the animals all day long. We all know these animals need a lot of snuggles,” she stated.

“The business adventure is teaching the boys the importance of the younger generation to get involved in organizations and give of their time which is as important as giving money.

They are also quickly learning business and people skills.”

To date the boys have created 300 flower pens.

The duct tape used in the flower pens is specially designed to be higher quality to stick together better. The tape is usually purchased from Canadian Tire, and specialty stores like Michaels and Staples in Regina. “We have experimented and the tape we can get around here is not a great quality to make the pens,” said Scheller.

The boys have 50 to 60 different colours of tape that are used in hand creating the flower pens.

It takes approximately one hour to create a pen and a 10 meter roll of tape

“In February of this year Carter had presented a slide show presentation to his class explaining about the pens and all the colours and why he likes to do this

project,” said his mom.

“We both enjoy making the pens and the feeling we get when we help the shelter to provide for the animals,” said Carter and Wyatt.

This is how the fields at Sliding Hills Charolais looked after the ALUS Project implementation during the summer of 2018.

ALUS Project makes sense for Canora producer LeeAnn Weinbender, along with her husband Carey and children Sarah, Laura and Dale, operate Sliding Hills Charolais, a 125 head purebred Charolais cattle operation south of Canora.

In the spring of 2018 LeeAnn was made aware of the Alternative Land Use Services (ALUS) project being offered to all 24 RM members of the Assiniboine

Watershed Stewardship Association (AWSA.) The AWSA has been implementing ALUS projects since the spring of 2016 and is one of 24 grassroots organizations delivering ALUS programming across Canada, according to an ALUS release.

Community-developed and farmer-delivered, ALUS sustains agriculture, wildlife and natural spaces for all

Canadians, one acre at a time.

ALUS Canada’s mission is to enable Canadians to provide direct support to a national network of farmers and ranchers delivering ecosystem services in their communities, including clean air, clean water, carbon sequestration, erosion control, flood mitigation, pollinator support and wildlife habitat, said the release.

For LeeAnn and her

family, ALUS fit perfectly into their mixed farming operation. Their ALUS Conservation Agreement involved converting approximately 50 acres of previouslycultivated marginal cropland along the Whitesand River into permanent perennial forage that can be utilized for hay for the cattle.

“Our ALUS projects are specifically targeted towards

those marginal, saline, or flood and erosion-prone areas next to wetlands or waterways that producers may have on their farms,” said Jesse Nielsen, AWSA manager and ALUS coordinator.

“Through the ALUS program we provide $50/acre for the establishment of the forage in addition to annual incentive payments for up to 5 years for the cropland they convert to

forage, as well as for the existing wetland or upland habitat adjacent to the forage. Annual payments range from $20 to $50 per acre.”

The project at Sliding Hills Charolais was made possible thanks to a successful funding proposal by the AWSA to WWF’s Loblaw Water Fund.

District students share in Parkland College scholarships Twelve district students are among the 63 students of Parkland College who were awarded a total of $50,775 in scholarships at the college’s spring internal scholarship

awards.

The awards were presented in Yorkton on March 19.

Combined with entrance scholarships handed out in September, Parkland College

awarded more than $128,000 in the 2018-19 academic year, said a release from the college.

has given out more than $100,000 in scholarships. In that time, it has awarded well over $1 million in scholarships to local learners.

Included in the list of scholarship recipients are seven students from Kamsack, two from Canora, and one each from Springside, Norquay and Rhein.

These awards are made possible through the generosity of local businesses, organizations, community members, college staff, and sponsors and participants in the annual Dollars for Scholars Golf Classic, said the release.

Eligible post-secondary awards are partially matched by funds from the Ministry of Advanced Education’s Saskatchewan Innovation and Opportunity Scholarship program. Funds are provided to supplement the contributions of local non-government donors.
