Lioness fundraiser concert a treat for fans of the music of Johnny Cash On May 26, a packed Rainbow Hall in Canora was the site of a Tribute to Johnny Cash and June Carter, presented

by Canora Wheatland Lioness Club.

Cynthia Gazdewich, one of many Lioness members involved in organizing the event, said 180 tickets were sold to see Aaron Prociuk perform the music of Johnny Cash, accompanied by Ashley Robertson, who portrayed June Carter.

The concert included a wide variety of Cash solo tunes from the 50s and 60s, as well as songs he performed with Carter. Not only did Prociuk and Robertson perform the songs well, he also had background information to pass along about them.

Before they performed Keep on the Sunny Side he mentioned that it was one of the couple’s most successful duets.

He indicated that I Walk the Line was

one of Johnny Cash’s most successful songs from the 50s.

Before performing Get Rhythm, he indicated that it was actually written for Elvis Presley, but he never recorded it.

He mentioned Luther ’s Boogie referred to Luther Perkins, who was Cash’s original guitar player and passed away 50 years ago in 1968.

Prociuk mentioned that Cash was a big fan of the music of Merle Haggard, and the duo performed one of Haggard’s best-known songs, Okie From Muskogee.

He said that the movie I Walk the Line played a major role in his decision to take up the guitar and perform the music of Johnny Cash. He and Robertson then teamed up for Time’s a Wastin’, which was the song performed

by Cash and Carter in the movie when he kissed her and she ran off the stage.

Canora air cadets’ achievements recognized during annual ceremonial review A number of cadets were recognized for their outstanding achievements during the past year at the annual ceremonial review (ACR) of the Royal Canadian Air Cadets on May 30.

A total of four cadets received promotions. Jamie Katryniuk and Tessa Spokes were each promoted from corporal to flight corporal.

Gracie Paul was promoted from flight corporal to sergeant. Joanne Babb received a promotion from sergeant to flight sergeant.

All four of these cadets received their qualification badges for a recently-completed standard first aid CPR course.

During the awards portion of the evening, Spokes was named the top new recruit, presented by Milton Glaicar, Air Cadet League representative. This award is open to cadets who have joined the program in the current training year. Criteria include: showing enthusiasm for the program, a willingness to

always be ready for a new challenge and tackling any task headlong and with a positive attitude. Dress and deportment are also determining criteria.

Katryniuk won the award for the most improved cadet, which goes to the cadet which has shown a marked improvement in dress and deportment, as well as attentiveness during classes and respect for the officers and staff as well as peers.

He received the award from 2Lt. Wade Stachura, training officer.

Babb was chosen the winner of the esprit de corps award, which is voted on by other cadets in the squadron as the cadet that most exemplifies the model cadet in dress, deportment and leadership. The award was presented by Capt. Terry Eritz.

Darren Paul. Some of the criteria for the award include how the cadet interacts with junior and senior cadets, how the cadet coaches and encourages younger cadets and how they set an example to follow. Participation in

citizenship activities, as well as leading those activities is also taken into account.

Paul also won the Duke of Edinburgh Award; Bronze level. The award was presented by Nicholas Haines, award officer for the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Aw a r d o f C a n a d a / Saskatchewan Division. He said the award aspires to help young people transition to adulthood, equipping them for life after their school years are done. It recognizes students who have made a significant long-term

effort in community service through volunteerism; physical activity and skill development, as well as experiencing the great outdoors through an “adventurous journey”.

This Award was established by HRH Prince Phillip (the Duke of Edinburgh) in 1956 and now operates in 143 countries worldwide.

There are three levels in the Award: Bronze, Silver, and Gold. At each level, there are increasingly longer time commitments required for all of the program components,

with an additional project required for the Gold level.

Paul volunteered at the local library for community service. For her skill, she learned how to speak French. Her physical recreation regime included swimming, cycling and running.

She has continued on with the Duke of Ed Award program and plans to achieve her Silver Award.

Capt. Darren Paul, CO, paid tribute to the cadets for their hard work and perseverance during the past year, and commending them for the growth they have shown during the year.

He thanked 2Lt. Stachura, training officer, and Brad Chambers, training staff member, for their efforts in a variety of areas, including teaching and organizing activities.

Paul recognized the efforts of Juanita Martin as sponsor chair, Dion Spokes in spearheading and organizing fundraising efforts, and Maureen Babb for her past help as secretary/treasurer. Paul thanked Claudette Hanson for agreeing to take on the secretary/treasurer role.

Continued from Page 1 Recently named 2017 International Tribute Artist of The Year, A.R. Cash begin in 2013 as Prociuk’s stylistically authentic tribute to Johnny Cash’s music from the 50s through the 60s, according to information from his website. With the addition of Robertson, the duo has won the hearts of music lovers performing in sold-out venues across Canada, said the information.

“Our goal is to captivate the audience and bring them back to a time when Johnny Cash was a household name around the world,” said Prociuk.

Gazdewich was pleased with the turnout for the event. She said past Lioness fundraisers have often catered to women, but the club organized the Cash concert for its appeal to just about everyone.

Gazdewich said, as is the case in all Lioness events, all money raised goes back into the community.

After seeing the movie I Walk the Line, Aaron Prociuk taught himself how to play the guitar and discovered a love for singing Johnny Cash’s music.

Those included: an air skills event with Kamsack; two cadets participated in the regional biathlon competition; a poppy drive for the Royal Canadian Legion and taking part in the Remembrance Day parade; a joint parade with Harvard air cadets in Preeceville; a survival weekend at Camp Saskadet near Kelvington with Lanigan, Wynyard and Foam Lake; taking part in the Canora winter lights parade; hosting the cadet zone curling competition; participating in the Kamsack volleyball tournament with Foam Lake and Wynyard; shovelling snow for those unable to do it themselves, and gliding in Tisdale.

Paul said the move back into the Canora Composite School for activities has given the squadron the ability to have a functional office and access to the school facilities, creating an ideal learning environment.

He thanked Lorri Dennis for accepting the role of reviewing officer for the ACR. Dennis thanked the Canora squadron for giving

her this honour. She looked back on her lengthy association with the squadron, which included over 20 years as an officer and about six or seven years as CO. Before that, she was a member while she was still a student.

“I ended up spending a great five years with the cadets and have so many memories of summer camps and ski trips, drill team competitions and all those bus trips,” said Dennis.

“Fast forward to 2018. It is difficult to interest a person

in anything that doesn’t involve screen time because the world moves so fast.

People rarely camp in tents anymore or canoe down a river. My own kids roll their eyes at most of what I do for fun.

“That is why I am so pleased to see the group before me tonight. Try and take advantage of everything the cadet program has to offer.

You will have opportunities to do things that most people never get.

“Take that glider flight,

sign up for summer camp, get down and dirty at Saskadet.

“I guarantee that when you are as old as I am you will remember those things far more than something you saw on Facebook.”

LOOKING BACK...

A Decade Ago Following the Relay For Life in Canora, which raised over $133,000 for the Canadian Cancer Society, Chairperson Darlene Senkow said the impact of the overwhelming response of the community was difficult to express in words. ***** F/Cpl. Matthey Burym was named the cadet of the year at the annual ceremonial review of the Canora squadron of the Royal Canadian air cadets. ***** Mayor Terry Dennis shaved the head of Sgt. Terry Wilson of the RCMP during the Relay for Life in Canora. ***** On behalf of Pioneer Grain, Canora, Brent Woloshyn, director of operations, presented a $25,000 cheque to Ginette Ostafie of the Canora School Community Council for its Canora Composite School playground equipment project. ***** As a result of an increasing number of extremely loud vehicles noticed in Canora and surrounding towns, the Canora and Sturgis members of the RCMP were planning to focus their attention on vehicles with inadequate mufflers, said Sgt. Terry Wilson. ***** Emma Pratt and Kelton Novak, Canora Grade 1 students, were shown the interior of a police patrol car by Cst. Tyler Grainger during the EMS day at the Canora Ambulance Base.

Moe’s direction as premier still unclear The last nine months have turned into a long journey for Premier Scott Moe. The question now is: Where does he go from here?

Perhaps he doesn’t have to go too far.

Prior to entering the legislature this spring for the first time as premier, Moe was gifted with three rural by-election wins in Melfort, Kindersley and Swift Current.

It solidified the 48-seat Saskatchewan Party caucus in the 61-seat legislature (former finance minister Kevin Doherty’s seat is currently vacant), providing an important political reminder that that there are just no meaningful threats to the government’s massive majority.

That’s largely because the 12-member NDP caucus in the legislature led by equally new leader Ryan Meili has not yet provided a viable alternative to the Sask. Party government.

Sure, the Global Transportation Hub and Regina bypass have allowed the NDP to score some additional political points.

We should also note the previous two city by-elections were won by the NDP, a noteworthy fact, given that the next three provincial by-elections (Doherty’s Regina Northwest seat along with Saskatoon Eastview and Regina Walsh Acres now respectfully occupied by federal Conservative candidates Corey Tochor and Warren Steinley) will all be in the cities.

But the NDP is simply not making in-roads in the Sask.

Party’s rural stronghold. Anything other than another Sask.

Party majority in 2020 seems unlikely.

Winning is always the goal in politics, even surpassing the reasons why political parties want to win power. Often, it’s a case of ensuring that you win, first, and then figuring it out from there.

However, sooner or later, Moe has to reveal more about where he intends to take the Sask. Party and the province.

Yes, fighting the federal Liberal carbon tax and promoting a pipeline are popular things to do. Arguably, they are important enough to merit the time Moe has dedicated to these two agenda items.

But when it comes to Saskatchewan moving forward, what’s next?

Well, the more questions you throw at politicians, the more likely you are to find answers. And one of the best places to pepper politicians with questions happens to be the premier’s or executive council budget spending estimates.

Last week, premier’s estimates turned into a three-hour exchange between Meili and Moe, not only a good way to

measure both leaders but also a chance to gain insight into Moe’s agenda.

The premier did reveal some things, although perhaps not enough to tell us precisely where he is going.

Of interest was his talk of balancing the budget in three years, the same path that former premier Brad Wall took and one Moe continues to follow.

Asked by Meili why now, in a time of economic downturn, would the Sask. Party government increase the provincial sales (PST) Moe provided his best, most succinct answer. During the leadership race, people told him the price of barrel of oil shouldn’t dictate number of nurses hired or the dollars spent on education, Moe said.

It was the clearest indicator to date of a new path for the province that deviates from the last 10 to 15 years in which Saskatchewan governments have relied on rising oil and potash prices to cut taxes and provide services and subsidies.

How much further Moe and the Sask. Party government will go becomes the next intriguing question.

We have already seen the demise of the Saskatchewan Transportation Company and attempts to add the PST to insurance premiums. Moe reversed the latter decision, much to the delight of his farming base that was paying PST on crop insurance.

Will Moe have to consider other similar measures to balance the books in three years?

There are a lot of questions in play that Moe needs to start addressing.

Severe weather and intensive livestock operation in RM of Keys cause for concern Our family has farmed land for 115 years in the Keys Municipality, and for the most part good agricultural and animal husbandry has been utilized by friends and neighbors for all of these years.

Our land is adjacent to s o m e o f t h e n i n e q u a rters designated for manure spreading by the proposed Hutterite intensive livestock operation on NE – N ½ 26 33 03 W2, and it also backs onto Stoney Creek, which

empties into the Assiniboine River.

This past week between three to five inches of rain fell between Pelly and Kamsack in a matter of hours.

Our land did not receive that kind of rainfall this

time. But if it had, and manure from the intensive livestock facility would have been spread on the land quarters designated under the proposed manure management plan filed with Saskatchewan Agriculture,

the run off and drainage would have been extensive and our concerns expressed over creek and river contamination would have been realized.

Nature’s torrents of rain are always unexpected,

however when they do occur, it does make clear to many of us that unforeseen events do and can bring unexpected consequences.

Reader questions pay increases for provincial politicians In March of 2017 Brad Wall cut all MLA and public worker salaries by 3.5 percent.

Two months later he appointed 10 of his MLA’s as legislative secretaries and immediately gave them a raise of $3,000 per year.

Scott Moe took notes.

To d a y, i f y o u a r e a S a s k Party Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA), and your name is Nadine Wilson, you just got a nice $14,311 raise from Premier Moe. If you’re one of the other 12 Sask Party MLA’s who just received a regular legislative

secretary appointment, you are only getting an extra $3,000.

But don’t worry about this wage increase of $50,000 more per year of your tax dollars. Deputy Premier Gord Wyant (who gets an extra $55,964 for that title) says it’s a “good investment” and calls

it a “modest amount”.

NDP Agriculture Critic Carla Beck disagrees. She says that last year’s freedom of information requests asking for all documents related to legislative secretaries generated zero documents or reports.

In other words, it looks like

no extra work was done for that extra pay. Gord Wyant might think that’s a good investment, and I might too, if I could figure out how to change my name to Nadine Wilson.

Millennials and church and jumping the S curve I want to send global, sky-writing airplanes telling the lifechange that happens beneath a steeple. I want to install a police microphone on top of my car and cruise the streets screaming to the masses about the magical utopian community of believers waiting for them just down the street. (Ned Flanders, The Simpsons.)

Do we want millennials, 22 to 35-year-olds, to be as excited as Ned Flanders about going to church on Sunday mornings?

In his article 12 Reasons Millennials are over Church, Sam Eaton cites: only two in ten Americans under 30 believe attending church is important, while 59 per cent of millennials raised in the church have dropped out and 35 per cent of millennials have an anti-church stance believing the church does more harm than good. Ouch!

Eaton suggests what is needed in his metaphorical nailing of 12 theses to the wooden church door of the millennial-less church: 1. Nobody’s listening to us, nobody cares what we think.

2. We’re sick of hearing about values and mission statements. Get back to the heart of the Gospel; actions and service.

3. Helping the poor isn’t a priority. Clock the number of hours spent serving the least of these.

4. We’re tired of you blaming the culture. Focus on real solutions and real impact in our immediate community.

5. The “you can’t sit with us” effect. Church hasn’t always

felt exclusive and “cliquey” to some.

6. Distrust and misallocation of resources; frugality and transparency are needed. Dollars are to be used to better serve the Kingdom.

7. We want to be mentored, not preached at.

8. We want to feel valued, not manipulated. We want to be heard and thanked; not “you’re letting your church down.”

9. We want you to talk to us about controversial issues (no one is.)

10. The public perception should be that the church needs to be visibly involved and serving the community; being the aroma of Christ.

11. Stop talking about us. (Unless you’re actually going to do something.)

12. You’re failing to adapt. Talk to the millennials you

already have before they ask themselves, what are we still doing here?

Dramatic changes are needed to reach our millennial church avoiders. To prepare our minds for these changes let me borrow a metaphor Father Brendan McGuire used in discussing the Abundance Theory.

Imaging you have a beautiful orange tree in your garden.

You pick all the oranges you can reach. Now you say the tree is done. Then someone brings a ladder. You climb the ladder and take all the oranges you can now reach. Next someone invents a cherry picker and you can pick the ones on top. The business world calls this “Jumping the S curve”.

It is time for Jumping the S curve. We, the church, have picked all the oranges we can reach. We need a ladder. More radically, we need a cherry picker and more advanced technology to reach the millennials.

Three things needed in the church are: prayer, discerning the Spirit’s guidance and commitment to action. Tawnya Huhn, responding to 12 Reasons said, “Intense, deep pondering over scriptures is vital as it shows us the Father’s story. Good deeds flow from a heart surrendered.”

Part of the solution suggested in No. 12 of Eaton’s 12 Reasons is to look at the data and take a risk. Don’t keep trying the same things. Admit that you’re out of your element, and finally, talk to the millennials.

Farming includes lots of hope and finger crossing When it comes to farming there has always been a generous amount of hope and finger crossing involved.

Farmers hope frosts in the spring and fall will stay away until crops are grown and harvested.

Throughout the year they hope the rains will come when needed, that it doesn’t get too hot, and that hailstorms stay away.

And, then there are the hopes that grain and oilseed prices will be good, and that the transportation system will operate without glitches so they can access the best markets in a timely fashion.

In recent years the transportation system, or more specifically the rail system, has not worked glitch-free. In fact, it has been a choke point at times in terms of getting Prairie grain from the farm to port, and that has caused shipping delays which have hurt farmers in their efforts to realize the best prices.

Farmers have been impacted by rail planning and performance issues since 2013/14, and the poor performance of the railways in the spring of 2018 has again resulted in problems such as higher on-farm inventories, lost sales, and increased demurrage costs.

The recent issues are not the first which have had farmers questioning how the rail companies handle grain.

The situation has been one where the federal government has been looked to in the past to smooth the relationship, or more accurately to create a structured ruleset which in essence

forces the rail companies to do a better job of handling grain.

That process continued recently with the passage of Bill C-49, which amended the Canada Transportation Act. “The new legislation includes requirements for railways to disclose data and increase transparency on performance metrics, service and rates. It is hoped that these transparency initiatives, along with the potential for reciprocal penalties in railway service agreements, will improve accountability and system performance,” detailed a release from the Saskatchewan Wheat Development Commission (Sask Wheat.)

“Bill C-49 also provides for the maintenance of the Maximum Revenue Entitlement (MRE), which ensures railway profitability while protecting farmers from excessive rail freight rates. This was a key demand from farm groups. The new bill introduces long-haul railway inter-switching to 1,200 km, or half of the Canadian haul, which has some potential to

increase competition between railways.”

The situation is one which has had a range of grain commodity and Prairie farm groups lobbying for changes.

Bill C-49 is essentially the federal government’s response to the lobbying effort. “The passage of Bill C-49 is the culmination of a lot of hard work by producers, farm organizations, shippers and federal government officials,” said Laura Reiter, Sask Wheat Chair in their release. “The provisions that modernize the movement of grain will improve the relationship between farmers and those in the handling and transportation system and will provide the buyers of Canadian grain greater confidence in our ability to deliver the crops they need.”

The Bill may already be having an impact as Canadian National Railway (CN) announced that it would be purchasing 1,000 new-generation hopper cars to bolster shipping capacity.

“We knew that Bill C-49 was a strong piece of legislation and now we have the proof that it truly will help modernize the shipping industry,” said Grain Growers of Canada (GGC) Vice President Art Enns from Winnipeg in a GGC release.

“Grain farmers can take comfort today in knowing that our hard work in pressing for the Bill will pay off through a balanced and robust rail system.”

Clearly there is hope in the farm sector that Bill C-49 will have a positive impact on grain transportation, but past efforts have always ultimately come up short, and only time will tell if this effort has gotten it right.

Mirrors just get meaner as time goes on

Growing old is like jumping into cold water on a warm day; everything shrinks.

In fairy tales a lot of things happen with mirrors. Sometimes the mirror speaks, and sometimes it shows the image of the evil witch. In the funny house at the fair, your image may change from mirror to mirror. You’ll be tall and thin on one mirror, only to become stubby and fat in the next and then bent out of shape.

My identical twin brother passed away three years ago, but we meet every morning in my bathroom mirror. We bid each other good morning and have a nice chat.

He foregoes Norwegian and speak to me in English. I

don’t speak too loudly, because I don’t want Marion to hear me as she might think that I’ve lost it.

Years ago, after having been bar hopping with the boys on a Friday night, I went to bed rather inebriated; in fact, quite soused.

When I made my way to the bathroom to have a shower the next morning, I saw a stranger looking at me in the bathroom mirror. I turned around and ran into our bedroom.

I called Marion and asked her to come and tell me who that homeless person in the bathroom is. How did he get here and what the heck was he doing in our bathroom?

Marion looked at me, shook her head and said there was nobody in our bathroom.

I told her that I saw him in the bathroom mirror. She dragged me to the bathroom and showed me that there was nobody there. Then she placed me in front of the mirror, pointed at it, smiled and left.

Women use mirrors all the time. Men? Not so much.

Men only use mirrors to shave, comb their hair and pick broccoli remnants from the gaps between their teeth.

Women can spend hours in front of a mirror, especially when getting ready for a night out. For many women the statement “I’ll be ready in five,” usually ends up taking the better part of an hour.

Marion on the other hand, is not wasting time in front of the bathroom mirror, or with any other mirror. Is that because we’re happily married?

We don’t have to impress anybody, and we have the best fun together.

On one occasion I sat on a bench in the mall, watching the people and their behaviour. Men would usually keep on walking to their destination, with the occasional quick glance at the reflection in the plate glass.

Women on the other hand, would stop at just about every window to check on their hair or their facial makeup.

Fifty shades of grey (or maybe griege)

Some of the younger women were also checking out their clothing, and one amended how she wore her jacket and blouse to make herself look sexier, including adding a hip swaggering seductive walk.

Dogs on leashes would see their own reflection in the window and growl.

Ole and Sven were walking home from the bar after having had too many shots of Akevitt. They were rather tipsy and very happy. When they came to a two-storey apartment building, Ole peeked through a first floor window into the hall in the apartment, but saw nothing until he looked to the left and saw his image in a mirror.

“I think I know that guy,” slurred Ole, “you take a look Sven, you have to look to the left to see him.”

“OK,” said Sven and peeked to the left through the glass, “of course you know him you idiot. It’s my twin brother Knut!”

Lars was visiting his favorite watering hole, sitting

at the bar enjoying a few drinks and chatting up the beautiful young woman sitting next to him. She was a stranger and it was the first time she was in the bar. Lars kept checking her reflection in the mirror behind the bar and liked what he saw. He decided to take a chance and asked, “May I have your phone number?”

“It’s in the phone book,” replied the woman.

“OK,” said Lars, “but what’s your name?”

“That’s in the phone book as well,” she said as she got up and left.

One morning Lena was in the bedroom in front of the mirror applying her make-up, and Ole was rummaging around in the dresser drawers.

“You know,” said Lena, “now that we’re married, I want you to stop saying ‘my house, my car, my boat’ and all that. You should say ‘our’ and ‘ours’ instead of ‘my’ and ‘mine.’ By the way, what are you looking for in those

drawers?”

“Funny you should ask,” said Ole, “I’m looking for our underwear.”

Kari was a tidy person who lived alone. She had arranged everything very neatly in her nice bathroom. The toothbrush was in a holder next to the mirror, with her hairbrush on the other side of the mirror.

The hairbrush complained that Kari was shedding a lot of hair and clogging the brush fibers. “It is an awful job,” lamented the hairbrush.

“That’s not bad at all,” said the toothbrush with a sigh, “I believe I have the worst job ever.”

“You guys must be kidding,” said the toilet paper.

And finally. Knut and Truls got lost in the forest.

“This is very strange,” said Knut looking at the map, “there should be a highway right here.”

“Really?” asked Truls and looked around, “perhaps some highway robbers have been here?”

Before someone of you get the wrong idea and start to excitedly scan this column for some scandalous or taboo material, let me provide a spoiler alert.

I am writing about hair.

Greying hair to be exact.

That lovely stage where the hair is neither grey nor brunette, but rather an in-between hue better described as griege.

But catchy titles or cover images have been known to grab the reader’s attention.

I remember a young lad in my Grade 10 English

class who complained quite vociferously to me about a book which I had assigned for reading. The book was Why Shoot the Teacher by Max Braithwaite.

On the cover was a drawing of a scantily-clad woman (nothing close to what would be deemed provocative today.) The image was in reference to one small incident in the story where a woman in the rural school district is caught in a blizzard and spends the night at the teacherage. (No, nothing happened.)

However, my male student was convinced that there were some sordid details hidden somewhere in that book. “I read that book from cover to cover to find that section,” he complained. “But it was a total rip-off.”

(Hmmm, rip-off or not, that publisher might have been on to something.)

But back to my situation. I hope none of my readers will accuse me of misleading them because I used the title of a popular novel. (And for those of you

claiming to have no knowledge of this titillating book, well, you can keep denying such, but your friends know better.)

The title refers to my decision to stop colouring my hair, allowing it to take its natural course. (Well, to be perfectly honest, it’s having some help along the way.)

I was inspired to take the plunge after I saw some very sharp-looking mature women (I refuse to call myself or my peers old) sporting grey hair and it looked fabulous. So I decided that

maybe, I, too, could aim for fabulous.

Now just because I’ve decided to let my hair go grey, do not assume for one second that I have also decided to “let myself go.”

Oh no. There will be regular visits to my hair stylist for toning, highlighting, trimming, and styling. If age I must, I will do it with all the grace and panache that I can muster.

My hair will continue to be a reflection of me and my personality. And even though for the next while it

may encompass a variety of shades (probably not quite 50), I have decided that it’s time that my hair will match the lines on my face and the years in my life.

However, when it comes to my clothing, well, that’s a different story. There I will push the limits and allow my inner youthfulness to influence my choices.

SJHL sets up structure for trauma assistance program The Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) has announced that they are finding trusted organizations to assist in setting up the structure for the SJHL Assistance Program.

The program aims to provide well-administered support to players, families and billets in overcoming the trauma from the

Canora RCMP respond to break and enter, robbery and assault in Canora Shortly before midnight on May 24 the Canora RCMP Detachment responded to a call of a break and enter, robbery and assault at a residence in Canora, according to an RCMP release.

Five suspects forced their way into the residence wearing face masks and

carrying baseball bats. The victims in the home were both adult females, said the release.

One was struck on the leg with a baseball bat while trying to phone police. She received minor injuries that were treated by EMS on the scene.

The suspects stole a

small amount of medication and then left the residence shortly after police were called.

The investigation included members of the Canora Detachment, Kamsack D e t a c h m e n t , Yo r k t o n Forensic Identification Section, Police Dog Services, and the Yorkton

General Investigation Section. On May 25 police executed a search warrant at a residence in Canora and recovered evidence related to the crime.

Two male youths were subsequently arrested and were to appear in Yorkton Provincial Court on May 28 charged with: robbery

with an offensive weapon, breaking and entering and committing an indictable o ff e n c e , a n d d i s g u i s e d with intent to commit an offence.

Their names can not be released under the Youth Criminal Justice Act. The investigation is continuing, and any members

RCMP seeks assistance after break and enter, robbery in Rhein On May 30, shortly before 1:30 a.m. Yorkton Rural RCMP responded to a complaint of a break and enter and robbery at a residence in the community of Rhein, according to an RCMP release.

Initial investigation

has revealed multiple individuals wearing masks entered the residence with weapons. The lone adult male inside the residence was assaulted and a number of items were taken including a large sum of cash and two firearms,

said the release.

The individuals left the scene in an unknown direction.

The adult male was transported to hospital for treatment of his injuries.

Yorkton Rural RCMP believes there is no threat

to public safety at this time, and has no further descriptions of the people who entered the residence, according to the release.

The RCMP is seeking assistance from the public in identifying any suspicious vehicles that may have been traveling in or around the Rhein area during the night in question.

Supers only manage one win in three games during busy week The Canora Supers of the Southeast Senior Baseball League (SESBL) played three games in a week which included an easy win, a tense one-run loss and another loss where the bats never really showed up.

On May 28 the Supers welcomed the visiting Langenburg to Canora. In this contest Langenburg brought the lumber, pounding out ten hits

and five runs, said Greg Andreychuk, player/manager of the Supers.

“The home team trailed 5-1 heading into the bottom of the seventh and final inning,” said Andreychuk.

“The Supers’ team character showed as we got to within one run with the bases loaded before Langenburg ultimately recorded the third out to get the victory by a final score of 5-4.”

Kholton Shewchuk went the distance on the mound.

He threw an efficient 96 pitches while giving up just three earned runs with three strikeouts.

A beautiful evening of baseball in Grandview weather-wise on May 26 took a turn for the worse on the field as only three Supers recorded hits off of Lakers pitcher Branden Storey in a 9-3 loss Greg Andreychuk had a single and two RBIs. “But overall, the offence just could not get going,” said Andreychuk.

On this evening everything went well for Canora in a 25 to 0 victory. Three Supers hurlers combined for a nohitter, said Andreychuk.

Kholton Shewchuk, Adam Korb, and Dylan Toffan faced only one batter over the minimum as one Padre

hitter reached base on an error.

“This was the third Supers no hitter since 2011,” said Andreychuk.

“Colby Parachoniak had one in Langenburg in 2014 and Derek Palagian had one versus Swan River in 2011.”

The bats were lethal as the Supers had 20 hits. Brennan Hedin and Derek Marshall each made their Supers debut on this evening.

The Supers’ record for the season to this point sits at 2 wins and 3 losses.

Athletes from Canora Composite School (CCS) did well at the district track-and-field competition in Yorkton on May 23 and 24, with a number of topten finishes.

In peewee girls events, Zoe Thomas finished second in the triple jump with a distance of 8.61 metres and sixth in the long jump with a leap of 3.92 metres.

Kailey Sleeva placed third in the shot put with a heave of 8.09 metres and third in the discus with a throw of 19.34 metres. Hayden Parmley was sixth in the shot put with 7.85 metres and fifth in the discus at 17.19 metres. Jordan Harper finished tenth in the 800 metres with a time of 3:13.77. Meadow Ostafie placed tenth in the high jump by clearing 1.20 metres.

In bantam girls events, Lexi Biletski won the 80-metre hurdles in a time of 16.33 seconds and finished fourth in the 200 metres at 31.64 seconds. Elley Tomcala came in fourth in the 100 metres in 14.52 seconds and fourth in the high jump by clearing 1.31 metres.

In the midget girls division, Larissa Makowsky finished eighth in the 100 metres in a time of 16.03 seconds.

In junior girls events, Grace Medvid placed sixth in the discus with a throw of 19.42 metres and seventh in the shot put at 7.25 metres.

In senior girls events, Kaitlyn Landstad finished third in the 80-metre hurdles in a time of 15.80 seconds and fifth in the javelin with a throw of 22.59 metres. Jill Gulka was third in the 1,500 metres in a time of 5:57.90 and fifth in the triple jump with a distance of 8.45 metres.

Rebecca Hort won the senior girls 80-metre hurdles in a time of 14.08 seconds, placed second in the 200-metre dash in 29.11 seconds, third in the 100 metres in 14.64 seconds and fifth in the long jump with a leap of 4.30 metres.

Hort accomplished a third-place finish in the senior girls aggregate with a total of 28 points. The aggregate winners are the athletes who have accumulated the most points for their events in their age group.

In peewee boys action, Jaxon Bisschop finished fourth in the triple jump by

covering a distance of 8.56 metres. Cole Marcinkowski placed fifth in the 200 metres with a time of 30.81 seconds and seventh in the 400 metres at 1:15.55.

In bantam boys events, Brendon Landstad won the 80-metre hurdles in a time of 15.24 seconds and finished eighth in discuss with a throw of 22.09 metres.

Dawson Zuravloff finished second in the 1,500 metres in 5:32.44, fourth in the 400 metres in 1:05.81, fourth in the 800 metres in 2:46.86 and fourth in the 3,000 metres in 12:02.09.

Hudson Bailey placed fourth in the long jump with a leap of 4.69 metres.

Matthew Dmitruik finished eighth in the javelin with a throw of 15.38 metres.

Clay Sleeva placed second in the 100 metres in 13.22 seconds, second in the 200 metres in 26.64 seconds, and second in the 400 metres in 1:01.16. Sleeva accomplished a third-place finish in the bantam boys aggregate with a total of 24 points.

In midget boys events, Alden Baron placed second in the shot put with a heave of 12.01 metres and fifth in the javelin with a throw of 27.17 metres. Grady Wolkowski finished second in the 100-metre hurdles in a time of 17.59 seconds, fourth in the javelin with a throw of 30.14 metres, eighth in discus at 26.16 metres and tenth in shot put at 9.95 metres. Jacob Danyluk came in third in the 100-metre hurdles in a time of 17.63 seconds.

Jacob Gulka finished fifth in the 800 metre run at 2:39.73, sixth in the 1,500 metres at 5:28.49 and eighth in the triple jump by covering a distance of 9.27 metres.

In senior boys events, Nathan Bucsis placed third in the 3,000 metres with a time of 11:44.76, third in the 1,500 metres in 5:15.41 and fifth in the 400 metres in 1:00.69.

Bryce Pelechaty finished eighth in the 100 metres in a time of 13.62 seconds.

A total of four CCS athletes qualified for provincials, which were to be held in Prince Albert on June 1 to 2. Midget, junior and senior athletes that place first or second in their events qualify. Alden Baron made it to provincials in the midget boys shot put, Grady Wolkowski in the midget boys 100-metre hurdles, Nathan Bucsis in the senior boys 3,000 metres and the 1,500 metres, and Rebecca Hort in the 200 metres, the 80-metre hurdles and the 4 x 100 metre relay.

Leko’s Conservation Corner I n t o d a y ’s f e a t u r e , I am going to really change things up and if you are reading this at the supper table, I suggest you put the paper down until after you have digested your meal.

Today’s theme is “The Scoop on Poop.”

The reason I picked this topic is because my wife and I like to take our kids on hikes in our great provincial parks and we are always finding some sort of animal scat. Being a conservation officer, my kids think that I am the Professor of Poo, and they love to quiz me on everything they find from actual scat to a chunk of rock or even a Pepsi can.

I dazzle them with my brilliance and I am sure that my wife has a migraine from the number of times she has rolled her eyes back in her head after listening to me describe in detail these turd tidbits. My Grade 12 English teacher would be so proud to learn that I have put forth a literary gem like this.

All vertebrates, including fish and wildlife, have the urge to go number two.

When out in the wild, we often see various sizes and shapes of dung that come from different animals.

In this feature, I will try and describe the shapes and sizes of scat from different western Canadian wildlife, as well as provide a few neat facts about animal dung that you may not know.

We all know that different animals have different diets. Some are herbivores (plants only), some are carnivores (meat only), and some are omnivores (plants and meat). Depending on what the animal eats, you will see that by-product in the animal’s stool.

As with humans, once the animal has eaten and fully digested its meal, the digestive system removes and absorbs any nutrients that are required. Then, the remaining material is expelled from its body as waste.

Though scat is lower in energy than its original form (when it was food), the feces may still contain a large amount of energy. As a result of the animal passing on food energy as dung, it is readily consumed by the decomposers within the ecosystem.

The Scoop on Poop

LINDSEY LEKO dung. Most of the droppings have a shape to them which will help identify what species produced it.

The perfect poop, if there is such a thing, is about 75 per cent water. The remaining 25 per cent is comprised of pretty much equal amounts of fiber, bacteria, protein, fat, and mucous from the lining of the intestines.

There are a variety of shapes to animal poop, which can help you identify what may have stopped at that particular location for a minute. Contents and size of dung can also be used as an identifying characteristic.

The size of the scat should correspond to the size of the animal that left it there. Cattle and buffalo normally pass a plop or a pie. These are normally flat and actually plop and splat

when they hit the ground.

Members of the Artiodactyla family (hooved animals) produce pellet-shaped feces that may look like chocolate covered almonds. This thought alone should banish any future thought of eating that snack again.

Smooth round scat the size of marbles is often left by rabbits. Small tubular scat, depending on size, could have been left by an animal ranging from a mouse to a squirrel. The larger tubular-shaped scat that is rounded at one end and tapered at the other end probably would have come from a member of the cat family.

Larger tubular-shaped scat that is tapered at both ends would have come from a fox, and finally larger tubular-scat that is rounded at both ends probably came from a larger member of the canine family.

Bears are hard to characterize because their dung shape relates greatly to what they have eaten.

Bird poop does not really have a shape to it. It is something that we really do not pay attention to until one of them decides to open the bomb bay doors and drop its waste on your

newly washed truck.

Birds do not urinate like mammals. Their kidneys extract wastes from the bloodstream in the form of uric acid, unlike humans and animals that will remove urea in the form of urine.

The bird’s uric output combines with material digested from the intestines and is deposited on the hood of your new Chevy.

Birds have a cloaca, which is a multi-purpose organ in birds used to get rid of waste, lay eggs, and also for reproduction. This same biology is true for reptiles and amphibians.

Did you know?

• Hippos leave huge piles of dung as a navigation tool to guide them back to the protection of the river after an evening of feeding on the land.

• Rabbits, for example, eat their droppings a second time because they cannot obtain all of the required nutrients the first time.

• I n man y s p ecies o f wildlife, seeds are often found in scat. Once the animal has digested the useful product of a berry, they pass the seeds, dispersing them onto the ground where they will start to grow.

• Larger groups of

animal or packs will often use their feces to mark an area, telling other animals of the same species to take a hike and find a new territory.

• Some animals eat their young’s droppings to prevent predators from finding them.

• The turkey vulture often defecates on its own legs, using the evaporation of the water in the feces and/or urine to cool itself.

• The colour of poop is often determined by the animal’s diet. If a blue whale eats lots of shrimp, then expect the poop to be pink.

If a black bear gets into the blueberries, then the poop will be blue.

• Rabbits can produce up to 300 poop pellets a day.

Young workers reminded to take the young worker readiness certificate course As young people wrap up the school year and start applying for summer jobs, they should remember to look into the employment and safety rules that apply to young workers.

Most importantly, 14 a n d 1 5 - y e a r- o l d w o r k ers need to have their Young Worker Readiness Certificate Course (YWRCC) Certificate of

Completion before they can enter the workforce, said a release from the ministry of workplace safety. The course teaches young workers about their rights and responsibilities in the workplace. Students will learn the basics about employment standards and workplace health and safety.

“Although this information is useful for anyone, it

is targeted towards young people getting ready to start their first job,” Don Morgan, labour relations and workplace safety minister said. “We want young workers to feel comfortable enough to ask a question when they don’t understand what is expected of them and refuse work they feel is unsafe.”

apply for jobs and go for interviews before completing the course. They may not start work until they have provided their employer with a copy of their Certificate of Completion.

Young workers must also provide written consent from their parent or guardian. Employers are required to keep certificates and parental consent on

file.

Young workers are only allowed to work limited hours during the school year. They are also not permitted to work in certain industries under Occupational Health and Safety regulations, the release said.

More than 7,800 people received their Certificate of Completion between

April 2017 and March 2018. The Employment Standards Division of Labour Relations and Wo r k p l a c e S a f e t y a l s o delivered two webinars for teachers who use the YWRCC in the classroom.

Aquatic invasive species awareness week observed The Government of Saskatchewan had pro claimed May 6 to 12 as Aquatic Invasive Species Awareness Week to raise awareness of the risks to our province’s water bodies.

Prevention efforts have been successful to date, and no invasive mussels have been found within Saskatchewan, said a release from the environment ministry.

“Aquatic invasive species prevention is a prio r i t y, ” D u s t i n D u n c a n , environment minister, said.

“Our government focuses on education, promoting the Clean, Drain, Dry program, roadside boat inspections, decontaminations

and regular monitoring of Saskatchewan’s busy water bodies.

The ministry will deploy six mobile watercraft decontamination units around the province to support the inspection and decontamination program. Four of the six decontamination units were purchased last year.

Conservation officers, and other ministry and provincial parks employees are trained to support this initiative, he said.

Last year, inspection efforts resulted in 1,212 watercraft inspections and p r o v i d e d i n v a s i v e s p ecies information to 872 watercraft owners who entered Saskatchewan from the United States.

Of those 2,084 watercraft, 307 received detailed inspections by conservation officers and 119 required decontamination. With the planned expansion of the inspection program this year, the ministry plans to significantly increase the number of inspections completed across the province in 2018, it said.

Adult Invasive Mussel Monitoring (AIMM) is a partnership project with non-government organizations and other agencies to provide opportunities for the public to contribute to monitoring efforts across the province. The program provides an easy and effective way of detecting unwanted aquatic invasive

mussels. AIMM is an easyto-use and cost-effective monitoring program that provides a valuable tool for widespread early detection across many local waters in the province, and has a user-friendly program for reporting results back to the province. Last year, more than 90 waters were sampled for invasive mussels through the provincial monitoring program. “ We h a v e a m e n d e d provincial regulations to help prevent aquatic invasive species from entering our province and harming the waters they invade,” D u n c a n s a i d . “ We c a n now respond more quickly to neighbouring jurisdictions with aquatic invasive

species that pose a threat to Saskatchewan’s waterways, and we have the legal authority to require watercraft to remove their boat plugs to comply with the province’s Clean, Drain, Dry Program.”

It is now mandatory for individuals transporting boats on all public roadways to remove drainage plugs prior to transport. All individuals transporting watercraft are also required to stop at inspection stations. Failure to do so may result in a $500 fine.

Additionally, illegal transport of aquatic invasive species is subject to a $500 fine, the release said.

Saskatchewan partners with provincial

organizations, Canada Border Security Agency, Department of Fisheries and Oceans, and provincial governments in British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba and the Yukon to co-ordinate prevention on a regional basis.

Invasive mussels and other aquatic invasive species can be impossible to eliminate if they become established in a waterbody, and can cost millions of dollars to manage. They pose significant threats to infrastructure, hydropower facilities, wastewater plants, irrigation systems, fisheries and aquatic habitat, recreational activities, tourism and property values.

Invermay School athletes participate in district track-and-field competition

Invermay School athletes produced strong results at the district track-and-field meet in Yorkton on May 23 and 24, including a number of top-ten finishes.

In the peewee girls division, Kayla Dubas finished fourth in the triple jump with a distance of 8.33 metres and fifth in the high jump by clearing 1.31 metres.

In bantam girls events, Danika Soltys won the long jump with a leap of 4.53 metres and also placed first in the triple jump with a distance of 9.85 metres.

Trinity Fidek placed fourth in the 1,500 metres with a time of 7:18.84 and ninth in discus with a throw of 11.24 metres.

In the junior girls division, Jade Fidek finished fourth in the 3,000 metres with a time of 15:35.97.

In senior girls events, Megan Sterenka placed

second in the shot put with a throw of 8.84 meters and third in javelin at 26.27 metres. Natasha Fey competed in the Quad event, which is where athletes in junior and senior age groups take part in four events; 100 metres, 800 metres, long jump and shot put. Points are awarded according to their times and distances in each event.

Fey placed third in the 800 metres in a time of 3:17.40, second in the 100 metres in 14.01 seconds, second in the long jump after a leap of 4.20 metres and second in the shot put with a throw of 7.38 metres. After the results were totalled, Fey finished third in the Quad with an aggregate total of eight points.

In peewee boys events, Myk Cudal won the long jump with a leap of 4.90 metres and placed eighth in the high jump by clearing 1.25 metres. Joshua

Mendoza finished eighth in discus with a throw of 18.72 metres and ninth in shot put with a heave of 8.77 metres.

In the bantam boys division, Cole Serron placed sixth in the 3,000 metres with a time of 12:48.77, seventh in the 1,500 metres in 6:19.68 and eighth in the 800 metres in 3:03.65 In midget boys events, S h e l b y Wa l l i n w o n t h e 100-metre hurdles in 16.56 seconds, finished third in the triple jump with a distance of 10.92 metres, fifth in the 100-metre dash in 12.84 seconds, and fifth in the 400 metres in 1:03.16.

Dawson Pozniak placed sixth in the 3,000 metres in 13:23.78 and ninth in the 1,500 metres in 6:14.77.

In senior boys action, Mark Cudal finished second in the 100-metre hurdles in a time of 16.81 seconds, seventh in the 100 metres in

a time of 13.56 seconds and tenth in the long jump with a leap of 4.48 metres. Levi Minhinnick placed third in the shot put with a heave of 11.62 metres, fourth in the javelin with a throw of 39.08 metres and seventh in the discus with a throw of 25.44 metres. Brayden Serron was fourth in the 1,500 metres in a time of 5:23.39 and fourth in the 3,000 metres in 12:03.48.

Four athletes from Invermay School qualified for provincials, which were scheduled to be held in Prince Albert on June 1 to 2. Midget, junior and senior athletes that place first or second in their events qualify. Natasha Fey qualified for provincials in the girls Quad, Megan Steranka in senior girls shot put and javelin, Mark Cudal in senior boys hurdles and Shelby Wallin in midget boys shot put and javelin.

We had Red Cross Spirit We e k f r o m M a y 2 8 t o June 1. It started off with Mismatched Monday where

students and staff dressed in different patterns. Next came Twinning Tuesday where pairs of students and staff wore matching outfits.

On Western Wednesday, the school could be seen filled with cowboy hats

and plaid shirts, even some cowboy boots. Crazy Colour Thursday and Formal Friday were also held, with games during lunch hours all week.

Awards Night is coming soon, and it’ll be in the school gym on June

12. There will be a draw made that night for a Huffy Rigid Sport Series mountain bike, which was donated by Dwayne Grona from Foam Lake RONA. The proceeds from the bike raffle will go to the Invermay School

Library.

There’s been fundraising going on for the Grades 9 to 12 field trip with a couple of recent food sales.

On June 7, the high school students from Invermay will head off to Regina to visit

Canada’s only Medievalstyle castle, as well as go on a tour of the Legislative Building and play Laser Quest. It’ll be a good way to close off the 2017-18 school year.

Don’t let safety grind your gears To mark National Farm Safety Week, the Canada Safety Council has offered safety tips around machinery, including best practices, preventable measures and, with these, a reminder that shortcuts should never be taken when discussing safety.

Throughout the past century, much has evolved in the agricultural industry, and this is most obvious when looking at the machinery that farmers count on to make their day-to-day task easier, said a release from the Canada Safety Council.

From power steering in tractors to all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) becoming an industry staple, every new or improved bit of machinery has come with its own special set of preventative safety measures and guidelines.

Considering the fact that farms often double as a workplace and a home, it’s not uncommon for farming to become a family business. This is a side effect that can make the job more effective, but can also prove to be that much more devastating in the event of a fatality, according to the release.

“The agricultural sector is

an important one whose role in Canada can’t be overstated,” said Jack Smith, president of the Canada Safety Council. “The job often entails the use of sharp, blunt and heavy machinery. It’s only through proper training, education and preventative maintenance that these tools can be used safely, and it’s the farmer’s responsibility to ensure their proper use at all times.”

Agricultural fatalities are on the decline, relatively speaking. According to Canadian Agricultural Injury Reporting, the average of annual fatalities between 2002 to 2012 (the most recent year where data is available) was approximately 30 fatalities less than the running average from 1990 to 2001. Although the overall trend is encouraging, 2012 still saw 60 agricultural-related fatalities, an unacceptable figure, said the release.

U n s u r p r i s i n g l y, m a chinery dominated as the major cause of fatalities between 2003 to 2012, with 70 per cent of fatalities being attributed to machine rollovers, run overs, entanglement in moving machinery parts or other

machinery-related causes.

What can farmers do to keep themselves and their families away from harm?

The best tool for any farmer hoping to run machinery safely is the owner’s manual, according to the release. Machines are typically designed with safety in mind and are perfectly safe to use, assuming correct maintenance and operation.

An inspection of the machine prior to operation can sometimes reveal otherwise unnoticed safety concerns including: leaking air or hydraulic lines, removed machine guards or obstructed emergency stop switches.

Farmers and their families are encouraged to make it a regular habit to do a walk-around of all machines prior to use. A walk-around can be very helpful in any families with small children, as they may be behind a vehicle which might be backed up.

Other tips include: Personal protective equipment should be worn, when required, on the job.

Goggles, safety shoes and leather gloves are all potentially lifesaving in some circumstances.

Wearing any loose-fitting

clothing, jewelry, hairstyles or anything that could get caught on moving parts should be avoided.

To that end, moving parts should be avoided at all times. If there’s something caught in a moving part, the machine should be turned off and the keys removed from the ignition before performing maintenance.

If a machine is being parked on a slope, it should be blocked. Approximately half of all run over fatalities from 2002 to 2012 were individuals who were struck by an unmanned machine.

Caution and judgement should be exercised when operating a machine close to the edge of a ditch, slope or field. This is the most frequent cause of machine rollovers.

Preventative maintenance should be performed on a regular basis, making sure each machine is properly lubricated, adjusted and has no parts in need of adjustment or repair.

Farming can be a dangerous industry, but “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure,” said the release.

Safety and training for family and workers should

be a priority. An effective option could be to sign them up for the Canada Safety

Council’s ATV rider training course to learn the proper use of these machines.

KOPECK, Mary - The family of the late Mary Kopeck announces her peaceful passing at St. Paul’s Hospital, Saskatoon, SK, on Monday, November 14, 2017, at the age of 97 years. Mary was the eldest daughter of Nick and Katherine Kunetsky (Haniak) of Canora, SK. She grew up in Canora, SK, with four brothers: John, Mike (deceased), Dan (deceased), Nick and George and three sisters: Kay (deceased), Susan and Vicky (deceased); as well as five step siblings from her father’s first marriage. Mary met her late husband, Frank Kopeck, in Canora. They were married on October 29, 1939 and shared 58 years together. Many of the early years in their marriage were spent moving from town to town between Saskatchewan and Manitoba, looking for work and a place where they felt at “home.” In 1962, they moved to Watrous, SK, where they found “home” and lived there for over 30 years. Together, Mary and Frank raised eight children and Mary is now survived by all her children and their spouses: Eugene, Lawrence (Grace), Alexander (Sandra Patricia), Sylvia (Arnold), Jeanette (Don), Richard (Joanne), Sandra (Ken), and Sherrie (Jeff (deceased). She is also survived by 26 beautiful grandchildren, 41 great-grandchildren and 9 great-great-grandchildren. Mary was very proud of her family. Following the passing of her husband in 1997, Mary moved to Saskatoon and lived at Columbia Manor for the majority of her time there. She loved spending time playing Bingo, Cards and socializing with all residents. She was the first one to say hello to someone and ask how they were doing. Her friendliness won people over and she was very loved and respected within her complex. Her secret to living a long life in her later years was walking. She walked every day, sometimes twice a day and she walked kilometers! Her family believes this was her key to living a long, healthy life. Everyone will remember Mary in their own way, but we know that if you just went for a walk in her memory, that would put a big smile on her face. A Memorial Service, celebrated by Rev. Fr. Franklin Emereuwa, was held at the Chapel of Leson’s Funeral Home, Canora, SK, at 11:00 a.m., June 2, 2018, to honour (what would have been) her 98th birthday. Rite of Committal followed in the Canora Cemetery. Those wishing to make expressions of sympathy may make donations to the Canadian Cancer Society, as tokens of remembrance, in memory of Mary Kopeck. Doris was born on a farm in the Canora District on March 15, 1927, to Mack and Polly (Saliken) Malloff. As a young woman, Doris attended Meadowdale School and continued her education by correspondence. On December 8, 1951, she married Henry Negraeff. Together, they continued to farm the homestead in the Canora District, where they lived and worked until 1970, when they relocated to Canora. For the past 30 years, Doris’s love of knitting, crocheting and cooking filled her days. Her true passion in life was her family, both near and far. On April 19, 2018, she entered the Canora Hospital and remained there until her passing. She will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her. Doris was predeceased by her parents, Mack and Polly; husband, Henry Negraeff; sister, Annie Malloff; son-in-law, Samuel Mostowchuk; and her uncle, Peter Malloff. She is lovingly remembered by her three children: Patricia (Bill) Holowatiuk of Spruce Grove, AB, Dianne Mostowchuk of Creelman, SK and Peter (Lorie) Negraeff of Canora, SK; her nine grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren: Bill (Michelle) Holowatiuk and Billy, Paige, Ben and Aleah; Kate Holowatiuk; Milton Mostowchuk and Reese; Miles (Crystal) Mostowchuk and Jordan, Natalie, Page and Corey; Lavern (James) Proctor and Danielle and Grayden; Thomas Mostowchuk and Jazlyn and Amelia; Andrew (Krystal) Negraeff and Charlotte; Elliot Negraeff and Jeremy Negraeff; as well as her extended family and friends. A Celebration of Life Memorial Service was held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, May 28, 2018, from the Chapel of Leson’s Funeral Home, with Shawna Leson as Celebrant. Interment followed in the Canora Cemetery, Canora, SK. MCDOUGALL, Gladys - August 3, 1922 - May 28, 2018.

The death of Mrs. Gladys Cecelie McDougall (nee Ronneberg, Fraser) occurred on Monday, May 28, 2018 at Canora Hospital. Gladys was born on August 3, 1922 at Crystal Lake, SK to Ommund and Harriett (nee Corbett) Ronneberg.

The family moved around a bit so she attended school at Keeler, then Forest Hill School near Tadmore and finally Norquay. On October 5, 1940 Gladys married Kenneth Fraser. They farmed near Tadmore where they spent most of their time, living in Sturgis in the winter months for 13 of those years. While Ken was away at war, she moved to Winnipeg and worked at Picardy’s Candy Factory as the assistant chocolate dipper. Besides taking care of their family and home, she also sold Fuller Brush.

Gladys loved music and was a member of the Sturgis Kitchen Band and the Grace United Church Choir. Gladys moved to Yorkton in the late 1960s where she worked at Regal Ladies Wear, while also doing some housecleaning and babysitting.

On September 2, 1973, she married Duncan McDougall, a widower with a young family. Gladys was always hospitable and often had other young people staying and living with them for various amounts of time. She worked for the Yorkton Arts Council for a number of years as the receptionist at the Godfrey Dean Cultural Center. She belonged to the New Horizons Singers Kitchen Band, and loved playing guitar and singing with many groups and musicians over the years. Gladys loved dancing and was fortunate to dance with many of her children and grandchildren at her 90th birthday party. She also enjoyed knitting and crocheting, and all of her family have many keepsakes that she has made them over the years. Gladys was a very social person, loved visiting with all people and was a very gracious hostess and ready with a meal at the drop of a hat. She was able to travel some in her younger years and enjoyed those adventures with family and friends. For several years, she had a cabin at Crystal Lake and loved spending her summers there and the visiting that came with it. Family gatherings were her favourite times, the more the merrier. Gladys will be lovingly remembered by her nine children, 15 grandchildren and 30 greatgrandchildren: Len (Gladys) Fraser of Medicine Hat, AB and their son Shawn (Lyndsay) Fraser and children Wesley, Isabel and Hudson; Betty-Lou (Larry) Skogen of Sturgis and family Connie (Reg) Danyluik and their daughter Jade, Susan (Shawn) Gellert and their children Dylan, Spencer, Alexis, Tanner and Courtney, and Scott (Sarena) Skogen and children Tyler and Callie; Barb Fraser of Tadmore and family Dawn Ford and her daughter Ella, and Kent (Michelle) Hembling and their son Chase; Bob (Cindy) Fraser of Calgary and their family Taylor (Logan) Meers, and Madisyn Fraser; Marilyn Wog (Grant) of Govan and family Adam (Tina) Wog and children Kale, Gabe, Jnae and Luke, Pam (Brian) Ivey and children Hayden and Ashlyn, and Ken Wog (Marlie) and children Hudson and Anabell; Ken (Cheryl) McDougall of Yorkton and daughter Carla (Mike) and her children Harmonie, Kennady, Dexter and Max; Kathy McDougall of Saskatoon and her daughter Shandy (Kevin) Alaric and children Braxton and Teigan; Audrey (Ken) Cross of Nanaimo, BC and her children Constance (Shane) Hrykiw and their son Aiden, and Nolan (Roberta) Howard and their children Duncan and Ophelia; and Sandra (Tony) Wilkie of Rocky Mountain House, AB. Interment followed in the Yorkton City Cemetery. Memorial donations in Gladys’s memory may be directed to Kinsmen Telemiracle or Grace United Church. Viola Desmond: 64 years later, a chance to ‘right the wrong’ On April 15, 2010, nearly 64 years after she was jailed, convicted and fined for defiantly refusing to leave a whites-only area of a Nova Scotia movie theatre, Viola Desmond was fi nally cleared of her criminal conviction.

The late Mrs. Desmond, who appears on Canada’s new $10 bank note, which will begin circulating at the end of the year, was a successful Canadian businesswoman whose case was among the first known legal challenges to racial segregation in Canada by a black woman. She received a free pardon and apology from the Government of Nova Scotia on April 15, 2010, said a release from the Bank of Canada.

It marked a historic event for Canada in its ongoing journey toward achieving human rights. It was also the first time the Nova Scotia government granted a free pardon posthumously. The rarely used free pardon is “based on innocence and recognizes that a conviction was in error,” according to

the government, and is “an extraordinary remedy … considered only in the rarest of circumstances.”

“This is a historic day for the province of Nova Scotia and a chance for us to finally right the wrong done to Mrs. Desmond and her family,” said then-Premier Darrell Dexter at the time. “This is also an opportunity for us to acknowledge the incredibly brave actions of a woman who took a stand against racism and segregation.”

The free pardon stemmed from an incident on November 8, 1946, when Desmond was forcibly removed from the movie theatre in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia, for refusing to move to the balcony seats, where she was instructed to sit, to comply with the unwritten racially restrictive admissions policy of the theatre, the release said.

She was charged with attempting to defraud the provincial government, accused and ultimately convicted, of failing to pay a one-cent amusement tax—the difference between the cost of a

seat downstairs and in the balcony.

While Desmond was unsuccessful in her subsequent efforts to quash her criminal conviction, the legal challenge she sparked touched a nerve within the black community and added to the growing consciousness regarding racial discrimination in Nova Scotia.

“This closes an erroneous chapter in the history of this province and allows a new one to begin,” Mayann Francis, then-LieutenantGovernor, said during the formal pardon ceremony in 2010. “I am confident that the case of Mrs. Viola Desmond will be the focus of scholarly and human rights research for years to come. It is a historic moment for Nova Scotia and for Canada, and I am proud to be a part of it.”

Nearly a decade after she was pardoned, a new milestone was reached on March 8 when the new $10 bank note featuring Mrs. Desmond’s portrait was unveiled to Canadians.

on a Canadian bank note is the latest recognition of her fights for human rights and social justice, as well the wrongful nature of her criminal conviction.

“What happened to my sister is part of our history and needs to remain intact,” said Wanda Robson, Mrs. Desmond’s sister, in her response to the free pardon.

“We must learn from our history so we do not repeat it. If my parents were here today, it would warm their hearts to see Viola recognized as a true Canadian hero.”

Watch for the $10 note featuring Viola Desmond and the theme of social justice and the struggle for rights and freedoms when it begins to circulate at the end of 2018, said the release.

The agreement took effect April 1, replacing the Growing Forward 2 (GF2) framework. The federal government contributes 60 per cent and the province funds 40 per cent of each dollar spent.

The Saskatchewan costshared program suite will make investments in strategic initiatives to drive outcomes in six priority areas over the next five years.

Innovation: $191.5 million investment to build on Saskatchewan’s competitive advantages by advancing science and research capacity.

•Environment and Climate Change: $70.5 million to support the long-term resiliency and sustainability of the sector.

•Risk Management: $48 million to support the sustainability of the sector by anticipating, mitigating and responding to risks.

•Value-Added Agriculture: $30 million to support growth in the value-added and agrifood processing sector.

•Public Trust: $8.5 million to support public trust initiatives.

•Trade and Market Development: $7.5 million to assist industry in expanding domestic and international trade opportunities.

Additional investments of $32 million will be allocated to activities delivered by the federal government on behalf of the province.

The partnership includes a complete and effective suite of business risk-management programs to help farmers manage risks that threaten the viability of their farm, the release said.

Automatic PST refunds on certain types of insurance Policy holders of crop, livestock, hail, margin/income, life and health insurance in Saskatchewan are expected to receive a sales tax refund or credit from their insurance provider.

Refunds and credits are

automatic, meaning no action is required of policy holders, according to a release from the Saskatchewan government finance department.

As announced February 26, Provincial Sales Tax (PST) no longer applies to the

following types of insurance: individual and group life, health, disability, accident and sickness insurance, and crop, livestock, hail and margin/income insurance.

The PST exemption on these insurance products is

retroactive to August 1, 2017, the date certain insurance premiums became taxable in Saskatchewan, the release said.

Insurance providers who collected and remitted the PST will calculate all refunds

Policy holders do not have to request or submit a claim to their insurance provider or to the government to receive a refund or credit.

Highly demanded resource now available for Saskatchewan teachers Agriculture in the Classroom Saskatchewan (AITC-SK) launched a new educational resource, Dig Deeper: A Soil Discovery Kit for Grade 3 Students, during Garden EXperience in Saskatoon.

Dig Deeper is a resource kit that is designed to encourage students to explore the story of soil, its central role in sustaining life on earth, and the role farmers play in caring for the soil, said a release from

AITC-SK. The kit contains soil and supplies so the students can explore soil life through hands-on activities and experiments.

A total of 300 kits were to be distributed to teachers this spring.

“Soil is a limited and fundamental resource which is at the heart of food production on our planet,” said Lawrence MacAulay, federal Agriculture and Agri-Food Minister,. “We’re proud to support students learning

about the importance of soil and its management to ensure a healthy agricultural sector.”

The development of Dig Deeper was made possible through the Agriculture Awareness Initiative, part of the federal-provincialterritorial Growing Forward 2 initiative, and matching funding from Novozymes BioAg Limited.

“Over the years, we have received many requests for soil and soil activities from teachers,” said Sara Shymko, Executive Director of AITCSK. “We are thrilled to fill this gap in agriculture resources with our new soil kit.

Our hope is to secure further funding so all Grade 3 teachers can receive this kit in future years.”

A key component of the resource kit is the soil itself, which was generously collected and prepared by the Soil Science Department in the College of Ag and Bioresources, the release said.

Agriculture in the Classroom-Saskatchewan is a non-profit organization that partners with the agriculture and education communities to connect kids and agriculture through innovative, curriculum-based programs and educational resources.
