Canora landmark comes down A well-known Canora landmark at the corner of Railway Avenue and Norway Road was demolished on July 6 by Ken Wyonzek of Wyonzek Brothers Construction. The building was constructed in the 1950s and originally housed Norway Motors, owned by Walter and Nick Stasiuk. It was a Versatile tractor and Ford car and truck dealership, which also sold Fordson tractors. The building was sold in 1986, and eventually had a number of different owners over the years.

Fourteen graduates honoured in Canora Composite School graduation ceremonies F a m i l y, f r i e n d s a n d teachers came together to honour 14 Canora Composite School (CCS) graduates on June 28 at the school auditorium.

Members of the graduating class were: Abbey Sakal, Amber Weinbender, April Jennings, Bryce Pelechaty, Cory Motilaga, Emma Eiteneier, Graeme Wilgosh, Janayah Merriam, Kaitlyn Landstad, Kody Checkowy, Logan Statchuk, Nathan Bucsis, Paityn Z u r a v l o f f a n d Ta r a l e e Bazarski.

In his opening remarks, Dustin Nielsen, teacher and emcee, said, “Graduates, it’s awesome to see you here. I’ve known you right from Grade 5 to Grade 12.

Congratulations on this huge achievement.”

A total of 16 scholarships

were presented to the graduates based on a fixed set of criteria.

Janayah Merriam won the Canora Hospital Auxiliary scholarship.

Emma Eiteneier won the Beta Sigma Phi Scholarship a n d t h e S t . J o s e p h ’s Catholic Women’s League scholarship.

Kaitlyn Landstad received the Town of Canora scholarship.

Graeme Wilgosh was awarded the Canora RCMP scholarship.

April Jennings received the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce (CIBC) scholarship and the Canora Lioness scholarship.

Amber Weinbender won the Canora Ambulance

scholarship and the Gateway Co-op scholarship.

Paityn Zuravloff was awarded the Canora Economic Development scholarship and the Crossroads Credit Union scholarship.

Abbey Sakal won the Crop Production Services scholarship and the Richardson Pioneer scholarship.

Logan Statchuk received the Community Insurance scholarship and the Ukrainian Catholic Women’s League scholarship.

Cindy Smith, principal, presented the scrolls to the graduates and gave the administrator’s remarks.

“We are pleased to honour our graduates for their academic success and all the hard work, sweating

and cramming that went into it. Your teachers have been with you since Grade 5 through your successes and failures, and encouraged you to keep trying. Today is a milestone for you graduates, but also for the teachers and parents.

“Even though you are graduating, always be proud of where you’re from.”

The guest speaker was Katherine LeBlanc, former CCS principal.

“It’s an absolute pleasure to be speaking to you today.

I had the pleasure of meeting this graduating class and teaching you in Grade 11 History. I have grown so very fond of all of you.

“You have chosen the motto ‘So the adventure begins,’ but I would suggest ‘The adventure continues.’

Graduates told “whatever you do, work at it with all your heart” Canora Composite School graduates gathered for their interdenominational church service on June 28 at the St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church with family and friends.

Leanne Buchinski, pianist, played for the prelude and the processional as the graduates entered, and accompanied the congregational singing of Amazing Grace and God of the Ages.

The Bible verse chosen as the theme for the service was Psalm 37:5, “Commit thy way unto the Lord; trust also in Him; and He shall bring it to pass.”

Other scripture passages read during the service were: Psalm 15, Philippians 2:3-11 and John 14:11-21.

In the meditation, Rev. Brett Watson spoke on the theme Whatever You Do. “Congratulations to you, members of the Grade 12 graduating class of Canora Composite School for 2018.

And congratulations to the parents and teachers, as well.

It is your love, care, skill and commitment that has helped them come this far.

“You have all completed 12 years of education, some of you with considerable excellence and you rightfully should feel a sense of accomplishment. But I hope that none of you consider this

“There are probably one or two of you that have your life all planned out; what you are going to do for the summer, where you are going in the fall and exactly what you plan on achieving and where you plan to be in the next few years; almost down to the day.

“More of you will have a good idea of what you want to do with your life, just not as specifically planned out.

You may even decide to take a year or two to figure things out before you get started.

“Then there are the ones like me. You’ll wake up Monday morning with no clue as to what you are going to do with the rest of your life.

“I only knew that I had a job for the summer. I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do about education, and I figured once fall rolled around I would see what life had in store for me.

“My prayer and encouragement for you today, whatever your plans, is that whatever you do with your life, make it count, make it matter. As a Christian not only do I believe that life is an education but I believe it is a continuous series of opportunities. I believe that God

“There’s a story about a young man who suddenly wakes up, or regains consciousness, to find himself in front of a large gate, that is open slightly. He notices an old man sitting at a small desk, not paying him any attention. So the young fella decides to go through the gate. Suddenly, the old man perks up and says, “Hey, where do ya think you’re going?”

The young man replies, “I don’t know. I saw the gate was open and I thought I’d go in.”

“Not so fast” the old man says. “We don’t just let anyone in here.”

“Well, okay. Is there some sort of qualification, or a test maybe?”

The old man thinks, “Well, I don’t know, let’s see. Tell me, have you ever done anything remarkable in your life?”

“How do you mean?”

“You know. Have you ever done anything other people noticed and would remember you for, something completely unselfish, even heroic maybe?”

“I don’t know. It was a pretty short life. I really can’t recall anything special”

in a letter to the Christians at Colossae while he was in prison, before he was executed. In the third chapter of Colossians, the 23rd verse he wrote, ‘Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart as working for the Lord and not for men.’

“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart. Do it with excellence. Do it with every ounce of your ability because you know in your heart that what you do, matters.

“Make sure you enjoy what it is that you do.

Working for the government for many years, I witnessed too many who hated their jobs but did it for the pay check, and to me, that was no way to live.

“I have two vocations right now. My wife Mavis and I are pastors at Parkland Christian Centre, and I drive school bus part time. I really enjoy both very much. I love working with people, I always have.

“So whatever you do, work at it with all your heart.

Give it all your energy and your skill and let it be an example to others around you.

Graduates have many reasons to be thankful

LOOKING BACK...

A Decade Ago Doreen Kobelka was to officially take over as the manager of the Canora branch of the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce, replacing Maureen Park, who was retiring. ***** Valeria Mitchell and Stan and Dan Kupchinski, all of Buchanan, won $1,000 second place prizes in the Health Foundation’s Cash Lottery. ***** With so many positive factors converging, crop growth was in overdrive, said Phil Parker, an agronomist with Hudye Soil Services. He said many producers had been remarking about the amazing crop growth of recent days. ***** The members of the Invermay graduating class of 2008 were: Tristan Goldie, Nathan Kuras, Derek Knight, Shelby Gray, Kristy Fogg and Carissa Rioch. ***** Skyler Hladun of Canora, who played third base for the R. Miller’s Cardinals of Yorkton, was selected to Team Saskatchewan’s 16-year-old development team to represent Saskatchewan at the Fall Prospects Series against Team Alberta and Team Manitoba. ***** MLA June Draude joined Ann Leniuk, a member of the Rama Golden Jets, in cutting the Canada Day cake in Rama on Canada Day. ***** The Canora Supers made it look easy when the team demolished the visiting Grandview Lakers by a score of 29 to 7 in Southeast Senior Baseball League action, behind strong pitching from Darcy Blommaert and Graham Lamb.

Best to understand why teepees are there Why there are teepees on the lawn across from the legislature in Regina is likely a more important question than why the teepees are still there.

After having a least one teepee there for nearly five months now, many are asking, “Why are police unwilling to enforce the bylaws prohibiting them? Are the Indian protestors getting special treatment?”

With all due respect, these are the wrong questions.

If this were a simple matter of bylaw enforcement, it is the Provincial Capital Commission (PCC), the provincial body that replaced the old city-provincial Wascana Centre Authority that used to administer this city park, that has dropped the ball.

While the PCC successfully got the police to remove the original teepee last month, it likely should have requested the campsite be cleared in February when it first went up in response to the Gerald Stanley not guilty verdict.

It didn’t, perhaps because the Saskatchewan Party and the PCC recognized the sensitivity of the situation.

One might recall the entire province was a bit of a powder keg after the not-well-understood verdict in the death of Red Pheasant First Nation resident Colten Boushie.

Certainly, Premier Scott Moe deserves much credit for reaching out to Boushie’s family and the First Nation community as a whole to create better understanding.

Nevertheless, the protestors still felt a need to be heard, to educate others on their issues, including the historic treatment of aboriginal children and maybe even heal a little

themselves.

The legislative grounds are a place where people sometimes go to be heard by exercising their free speech, whether we necessarily agree with what they have to say or not. This expression comes in the form of protest. And, quite often, the protestors violate park bylaws, or perhaps even other laws.

The latter was clearly the case in February 2000 when farmers demanding $300 million from the provincial government and a billion dollars overall, stormed the legislature, chained the front doors and then conducted a nine day-and-night sit in.

The Regina police let them be, even though they were obviously conducting a far more serious trespassing offence. It ended when the protest leaders themselves asked the police to break it up when things were getting out of control. (There was talk of threats being uttered.)

too long. Yes, it has grown in the past couple weeks at the encouragement of the Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations (FSIN) after the Regina Police removed the initial protestors and got them to temporarily take down the original teepee.

One fears that the longer this camp stays, the greater the chance for resentment, or worse, unpleasant confrontation.

The camp leadership should be cognizant of this.

But it does seem clear the Regina police have acted wisely so as to avoid confrontation.

And while there are those who will rightly argue that some of the protestors’ demands can’t be met, maybe it would serve us all well to take a moment to listen to what they are actually asking.

At a meeting with provincial cabinet last week, the protestors laid out a wish list of things they wanted.

Some are less feasible, like a moratorium on adoption and any expansion of the foster care system.

But others seem rather reasonable. They have asked for: “clear data on the number of children in child care and the duration of their care”, a “review of all permanent wards”, examination of “the use of in-home supervision in-lieu of apprehension”, a “full report on child care”, a cabinet visit to the Red Pheasant First Nation, as promised and a “cost analysis” of children in care with cheaper alternatives in mind.

This is why the protest teepees are there. We should at least try to understand that.

Letter to the Editor from Minister Kaeding Since February 28, a group of people have camped illegally on the legislative grounds to focus attention on a range of issues.

Our government understands there are longstanding concerns.

During the last decade, we have worked hard to better the lives of First Nations and Métis people.

Here are some highlights: •Saskatchewan was the first province in Canada to introduce mandatory treaty education in the Kindergarten to Grade 12 school system • We c u r r e n t l y h a v e agreements with 17 First Nations Child and Family Service Agencies to deliver child protection services on-reserve and with three to

deliver services off-reserve • We h a v e i n v e s t e d a record amount in adult basic education, including programs delivered on reserve, and other training initiatives •Funding for the Saskatchewan Indian Institute of Technology has more than doubled, to nearly $100 million •We have boosted support for on-reserve policing and Aboriginal justice programs and continue to invest in community justice and alternative measures programs •We are improving internet and cellular service in First Nations communities •And we have increased support for community based organizations serving indigenous communities in

the north While there’s always more work to do, we are taking action, and progress is being made.

For example, employment in the indigenous community has increased by nearly 28 per cent since 2007, compared to 11.6 per cent in the non-indigenous population.

The campers at the legislature have a different view of our government’s performance, and we respect that.

All citizens have the right to express their opinion, to protest government decisions, and to advocate for policies they believe will improve life in Saskatchewan.

However, protests should be lawful. If they aren’t, the police have a

responsibility to enforce the law.

On the day the illegal camp at the legislature was established, a letter was sent asking the protesters to comply with regulat i o n s p r o h i b i t i n g o v e rnight camping at Wascana Centre.

The letter was ignored.

On numerous occasions, government officials met in person with the protestors, asking them to comply with park regulations. There was no compliance.

Government ministers visited the camp on seven different occasions to discuss the protestors’ concerns and made a number of attempts to arrange a formal meeting with the protestors to discuss their issues, to no avail, until a

July 2 meeting date was agreed upon.

The government asked the Regina Police Service a number of times to remove the camp.

The Regina Police Service insisted the government submit its request in writing.

After a letter was sent, the police finally took action on June 18.

But the camp was reestablished on June 21.

The government sent two more written requests to the Regina Police Service, asking them to uphold the law.

On June 26, they replied, telling the government that further police action to remove the protestors would compromise public safety.

The Regina Police Service urged the

government to “resolve this peacefully.”

Peaceful resolutions are always easier to achieve when the law is respected and enforced.

Nonetheless, our government remains focused on the task at hand.

For years, we have been working to address the issues identified by the protesters.

And we remain fully engaged with our First Nations and Métis partners.

Today, our indigenous population is advancing in many areas.

This progress must continue, and it will.

Reading signs and walking faithfully When I was a child I predicted rain for many days in a row.

I had discovered somewhere that if there is no morning dew on the grass, then that was a sign of rain. Well, it didn’t work. But I was a determined little prophet.

Elijah was more successful when he told King Ahab: “As the Lord, the God of Israel, lives, whom I serve, there will be neither dew nor rain in the next few years except at my word.” (1 Kings 17:1) Elijah walked faithfully with God and his reward included being taken up to heaven in a fiery chariot.

Much earlier Enoch, a descendant of Adam, also “walked faithfully with God” (Genesis 5:27) for 365 years and was taken up to heaven. Now that sounds attractive, being “taken up” instead of dying. If we walk faithfully with God, we will be raised up to eternal life. The life of God within us will just continue after our mortal breath leaves us.

Elijah is a fascinating prophet of the Old Testament. In one story about Elijah, an elderly couple is heartbroken when they must sell their sacred Shabbat candlesticks because they are starving.

A stranger in shabby clothes visits them that evening.

They offer him their bed while they sew some clothes for him. The visitor turns out to be Elijah who, as he leaves, rewards them by turning his footprints into gold.

Elijah fought the idolatry sweeping the land when Ahab ruled with his wife Jezebel. Elijah had to flee for his life and depend on ravens to bring him food at the brook Cherith, east of the Jordan River.

When this food source dried up Elijah visited the widow at Zarephath who shared her last food with him. He rewarded her by multiplying her little food and by raising her son from the dead (1 Kings 17).

Eventually Elijah challenged the 450 followers of Baal to a sacrificial “cook off” on Mount Carmel. The idolaters

of Baal tried to call down fire to burn their sacrifice. They cried out from morning until night and slashed themselves until blood flowed. Nothing happened.

In a dramatic scene Elijah drenched his sacrifice and filled the trench surrounding it with water. As Elijah called on the Lord, fire fell from heaven and devoured the sacrifice, the wood, the altar and even the dust around it. (1 Kings 18).

In the dramatic end to the drought Elijah brought upon the land, “Elijah said to Ahab, ‘Go up, eat and drink; for there is a sound of rushing rain.’” (1 Kings 18:41-46).

Ahab rode off and went to Jezreel. “Elijah girded up his loins and ran in front of Ahab to the entrance of Jezreel”.

What of all these fascinating events from the bible?

How do they help us in 2018? We can walk with God in faith. We can be imbued with the Holy Spirit as we try to follow Jesus, making use of the sacramental gifts available through the Church.

And if we look around us we can see models of faithful living. I can see the spirit of Elijah in some who run the good race. It is easier to imitate and follow these living examples that touch our daily lives. The challenge is for each one of us to be a sign.

Fond memories of summer fairs in Saskatchewan It is fair time in Yorkton, and that is an annual event that always brings back a flood of memories from my youth.

In my youth, a time now more than three decades in the past, I spent large chunks of my summers at fairs. Dad showed livestock back then, and I was naturally thrust into the show ring. I won my first trophy at age five, the Inkster Cup as I recall. And if I dug around in enough boxes I might still have the little keeper trophy.

From that time until I was beyond my teen years I was showing stock. Through the years the list of animals became rather diverse when I look back, ranging from pigs and beef cattle to sheep, dairy goats, helping a couple of times with a draft horse halter class for someone needing a hand, and even one year catching some of the laying hens to show at Shand Fair. Add in a few grain sheaves in a couple of those years, and I covered a lot of the bases in terms of showing.

Back when I was young, though, summer fairs were somewhat different than they are today.

An event such as the one in Yorkton this week, and others held across the prairies these days, are largely an entertainment package now. They are all about midways, stage

shows, combine crunches and chuckwagon races. People go to be entertained, and there is nothing wrong with that. Fairs are supposed to be fun.

In fact, they have always been about entertaining, whether it was a hot band like Trooper at a major city fair when they were still topping the charts, or farmer fastball at a one-day fair like Connaught where I was a director by the age of 16.

But fairs were also solidly about agriculture a quarter of a century ago.

Farmers brought out their stock and paraded them around

a show ring, hoping to get the judge’s nod for the red ribbon.

There weren’t big crowds watching, but people did wander through the barns to look at the stock. It was a connection between farmers and urban residents, many of whom I suspect back then were still more closely tied to our shared agrarian past.

There was a value in that connection that I think was important. Certainly today farmers are encouraged to make connections with consumers in order to tell their story of producing food in a safe, sustainable way. Fairs used to be a forum that allowed that dialogue to take place as people casually walked through the barns as part of going to the summer fair.

Whether it was Nipawin Fair, Saltcoats, Abernathy, Kelliher, Kelvington, Prince Albert or dozens of others, there was a chance for producers to show off their livestock and talk farming with others. That element of the summer fair is all but gone. Barns in Yorkton, as an example, see very limited use at the summer fair now, which for me is a sad thing.

But at least my childhood memories remain.

Rama celebrates Canada Day at St. Anthony’s Parish Hall A capacity crowd gathered at St. Anthony’s Parish Hall in Rama to celebrate Canada’s 151st Birthday on Canada Day. The Canada Day Program began with the singing of O Canada as everyone held their hand flags high.

Mayor Darrell Dutchak welcomed those in attendance, especially the F i l i p i n o C o m m u n i t y, the focus of this year ’s

celebration.

Mary Kowalyshyn, emcee, introduced Star Relatado, explaining that “the Relatado family was the very first Filipino Family that came to our community by purchasing a home in Invermay and becoming very active parishioners at St. Anthony’s Church.”

Kowalyshyn said a lasting friendship soon

developed, with many more Filipino families coming into the area.

“It’s important that we as Canadians learn more about the culture of the Philippines,” she said.

Relatado explained the many aspects of the Filipino culture, using a wide variety of items in her display.

Of great interest was the “kumot”, a multipurpose blanket.

Those in attendance sampled Filipino food which Relatado had prepared, followed by the opportunity

to enjoy singing done by a group of young Filipino children. The Cabungcal sisters of Invermay, Gwen and Clouie, performed a Filipino dance.

Part two of the celebration was presented in both official languages of Canada. Sponsors were acknowledged and thanked for their support.

The official cutting of the Canada Day cake was done by Star Relatado and Mary and Joe Kowalyshyn, followed by a roast beef banquet.

Music was provided by the Zayshley Band as the dancers “danced the night away.”

Fireworks at dusk were sponsored by Rama Village with a number of positive comments heard, including, “Wow, for a small town, that was very impressive.”

A late lunch was served

by Rama Golden Jet members.

Many door prize draws were made and dancing went on till midnight, finishing off the Canada Day Celebration for 2018.

Anne Swerhone died in Saskatoon on September 13, 2017.

Her family is interring her ashes in the Canora Cemetery on Saturday, July 21 at 2:00 pm followed by a reception in the Legion Dugout on 3rd Ave. in Canora.

All who knew her are welcome to attend both.

A barbecue was held at the Keen Age Centre on June 24 to celebrate May and June birthdays.

Birthday celebrants were: Harvey Messenger, Delmar Mattison, Rose Remenda and Pat Nehaj, said Marie Waselyshen, social committee member.

“The musical entertainment and singalong with Kerry Jones of Canora was enjoyed by all,” said Waselyshen.

organizing and decorating for the event were: Jean Zarazun, Nettie Gulka and Waselyshen.

Peter Wiebe and Bill Gulka were in charge of the barbecue while Elsie Carsten, Pat Nehaj and Iris Bodnarchuk helped out in the kitchen. All the workers were recognized for their efforts.

Lorraine Katelnikoff said grace before the meal.

Edith Kotzer, president, welcomed those in attendance and thanked them for coming.

Anne was born in Torquay, Saskatchewan to Elise and Steinar Knutson on September 6, 1917. After graduating as a Registered Nurse at the Grace Hospital in Winnipeg she came to Canora to nurse. She married Mike Swerhone in 1947 and helped run the Canora Bakery from 1950 to 1984. She was active in the Ladies Hospital Auxiliary and Canora Figure Skating Club, spearheading the drive to build the current skating rink after the old one burned down. Both she and Mike enjoyed many years of square dancing. As the wife of the Mayor she hosted Governor General Schreyer and his wife when they visited in 1980. She organized fundraising drives for cancer and heart disease and was a good friend to many. She died one week after her 100th birthday.

Anne is missed dearly by her daughter Elise, son Dan, three remaining sisters Delores Soogie, Helen Holth, Ethel Hanson and their families. Her ashes will be buried next to her husband Mike who died in 1998.

Change can be scary, especially when we are getting older. We like what is status quo. If we didn’t have change, I today would not be able to vote, to teach after marriage, be able to own land. Change happens, and we need to learn how to embrace it.

This is something that I have tried to instill as a mother and as a teacher. My children and I would always give our time. One summer we volunteered at the hospital. Although the residents were grateful, it gave us something even greater. We felt pride. Helping others gives us a feeling of selfworth too. Please do not be wrapped up in this ‘me’ world. LeBlanc left the graduates with a closing piece of encouragement.

“Life is not a remote control. If you want to make a change, get up and do it yourself because no one will do it for you.”

The graduating class chose Abbey Sakal as valedictorian.

“I’m here to reflect on our past years here at CCS, predict our outstanding, bright futures, and hopefully, reduce you all to tears.

I’d like to start off by saying that this is a huge, huge honour, for you to all be here listening to me today.

“This speech is lovingly titled Life Beyond the Stench of the Chicken Barns and I should begin it by saying that I’m not going to give everyone the Hallmark version of a valedictorian address, you know, the traditional commencement of ‘as I stand here, I see future pioneers of technology, lawyers, and surgeons.’ So don’t get your hopes up.

No, it’s cruel to give you such high hopes, because we are all going to be broke students for the next four to eight years, so get used to it.

“Having our time here

at CCS come to an end is a bit surreal. Now we won’t have Ms. Forbes around anymore to stealthily steal the toast cart whenever we are hungry in her class, even though she knew that sometimes we just wanted to waste class time. More importantly, it accurately and concisely ends what has been for most of us, 12 years of education. That’s 12 hard, tough years.

“Throughout those years, we have created bonds with the school. We now know which classrooms are the coldest; its all of them. And we also know that we, or more specifically Kaitlyn, should not put snow on the thermostat sensor to make it warmer, because apparently if you do that to the furnace, you will end up breaking the furnace.

“We have also created close relationships with our teachers here at CCS and I think that I speak for all of us in saying that we all will value and miss those relationships later in life.

“Ms. Forbes, we will miss your lullaby-like voice that you use to so sweetly rock us all to sleep while you explain how carbon bonds to other elements. Or how you can make methylbenzene, ethylbenzene, isopropyl benzene, and bromobenzene. Don’t worry I have no idea what I just said either. Ms. Forbes, these past three years you have been our shoulder to cry on,

“Then there was Ms. Odell’s English classes, oh boy. Leave it to Nathan to get the whole class, including Ms. Odell, riled up over Trump, gun laws, or any other new touchy subject that arose. Listening to Ms. Odell and Nathan get into heated debates for almost the entire class will be something that was a privilege to witness and something that we will all remember forever. So thank you Ms. Odell, for putting up with Nathan, sitting through Bryce’s hilariously brutal king soliloquies in Hamlet, and for making me literate enough to write and speak this speech. “ T h e n w e h a v e M r.

“He has a fantastic memory when it comes to his students. Even if he didn’t teach you for very long, he would have some sort of story about you. Mr. Lowes has given us a ton of advice slogans during our time here such as ‘just say no,’ ‘snapchat bad, math good’ and ‘don’t be a fool stay in school.’ Mr. Lowes, you will be greatly missed, and I’m sure more than likely the majority of us will be calling you up for help with math questions, or for car help when we leave here.

“Last but not least, there’s Mr. Nielsen and Mr. Baillie. I’m pretty sure if we didn’t have them to chirp everyday, we would all go crazy, especially Paityn, who, at every opportunity, made sure to put

Mr. Nielsen in his place. He made sure that we would know every awful late 90s or early 2000s punk song that he played literally in every computer class, and also made sure we all knew to watch out when he would practice his golf swing in the middle of the computers.

“Mr. Bailee taught us that somehow we can still get good marks in gym class without doing a single fitness test all year. He taught us that gym teachers can also double as History 30 teachers.

“Being such a small class, I must say, especially looking at all of us today, we are 14 of the best-looking kids at CCS. As a class, we have gone through a lot together. There was the great butterfly disaster of Grade 6, when we lovingly raised caterpillars. They turned out to be beautiful butterflies, until we came back from a weekend to find

them all dead on the classroom floor.

“Then Grade 7 came, and this weird Manitoban named Graeme showed up, and we were never the same. I would talk about Grades 8 and 9, but we don’t speak about those awkward, pimply, and hormone filled years. There was that one time we learned about Greek mythology for that one day; thanks Mr. Knight.

After that, we entered high school, and I’d like to mention our class was the only one to be able to take Shop class, but not Home Ec. So, we can build ourselves a house, but don’t expect us to know how to cook in it.

“Grades 10, 11, and 12 were our years where we slowly started to be our own individuals. We saw Amber become Einstein, Logan become a car expert, Emma become the sassiest girl in our class, and we saw April rock every hair color she desired. Our final years here at CCS have been memorable ones.

“The senior girls basketball team made it to HOOPLA, and I don’t think anyone was more excited for that than Janayah.

“There was that one day when Kody’s whole back axel broke in two while driving out of the school parking lot. Nobody got hurt, but I think we were all a little heart broken seeing Kody’s old ‘84 Chevy truck lying there on the road.

CCS graduates pay tribute to teachers who are moving on During the graduation exercise on June 24 at Canora Composite School, a surprise item was added to the program.

The 2018 graduating class paid tribute to Helen Forbes and Ronda O’Dell, two teachers who are leaving the school, in a presentation by Nathan Bucsis and Janayah Merriam, graduates.

“Over the last three years we have gotten to know Ms. Forbes and Ms. O’Dell on a big scale. They were more than just our teachers, as they often pushed us to excel on another level.

“In the upcoming school year, Ms. O’Dell will be transferring to Prince Albert, which is a little different than here, but after all you can’t spell PARTY without PA. We know the last couple of years have been hard, well, mainly because of our class.

“English class was always unpredictable as every day we wondered what argument was next. Generally, we would debate about Trump’s politics or gun laws.

No argument was quiet. Ms. O’Dell and Nathan were always yelling at each other about political views, with the rest of us were not knowing or caring about what was going on even though we were laughing.

Meanwhile Bryce (Pelechaty) would be in the back corner swearing his head off, making weird noises, and trying to be involved.

Janayah Merriam and Nathan Bucsis, graduates, gave a speech in tribute to Ronda O’Dell and Helen Forbes, teachers who are leaving Canora Composite School.

After hearing a tribute to them from the graduates, Ronda O’Dell gave her response, while Helen Forbes waited her turn.

This created a great atmosphere for debating grad and despite the arguments, everyone always had smiles on their faces.

“At the beginning of the school year the career counsellor had left Canora, which discouraged us. Ms. O’Dell stepped up and helped us organize our futures.

“When we asked Ms. Forbes about how she would describe Ms. O’Dell, she almost broke down in tears. Her words were that she is going to miss her more than anyone else as she is such a compassionate person, dedicated and a motivator to her students.

Ms. Forbes was sad to say that her best friend is moving on but she wishes her the

best.

“On the other hand, we asked Ms. O’Dell how she would describe Ms. Forbes and she was almost at a loss for words. She mentioned the good times at wing night Wednesdays and Ms. Forbes’ golf cart adventures. She described her as being her ‘hallway confidante and one of the nicest people she has ever known.’ She also used the words ‘mischievous, infectious and compassionate.’ Ms. O’Dell wishes Ms. Forbes the best in her retirement.

“Ms. Forbes is such a gentle person that she can’t even get mad us when we experiment with unknown chemicals, or walk

into the chemical room without permission.

We can take our problems to her and she will always listen, along with a willingness give advice and stay on our side. A few times she even, almost, threw fists for us.

“Whenever she said something controversial, one of her favourite phrases that always made us laugh was, ‘What are they gonna do, fire me?’

“She is a very hard working person, shown by her willingness to work late hours at the school, and her desk with the piles of more work needing to be done. The Grade 12 class all love her and will miss her guidance in our futures.

“Ms. Forbes and Ms. O’Dell have made such an impact on our lives that they are people we will always remember. We want to thank them for all the help they have given us and wish them much happiness.

We would also like to remind them to keep being brave.

“Our new adventure is beginning and so is theirs.”

O’Dell and Forbes thanked the graduates for their kind words and good wishes.

Forbes went on to add, “I don’t care so much about chemistry and physics. I really care about kids; particularly if they’re 17 years old and really lippy.”

Invermay celebrates Canada Day at Golden Age Club The Invermay Golden Age Club hosted the community celebration of history and diversity on Canada Day. Mike Kaminski, president, served as the emcee for the event. Greetings were brought by Tracey Fey

for the Village of Invermay.

In recognition of volunteers and seniors, the program honoured two provincial celebrants.

Sheila McDonald was recognized for lifetime achievement and Shirley Wolfe-Keller received an

award for contributions to First Nations people.

Both have received the provincial recognition from Saskatchewan Seniors Mechanism; McDonald in 2015 and Wolfe-Keller in 2017.

OBITUARIES

DERKATCH, Paul - With great sadness, the family of the late Paul Derkatch of Saskatoon and formerly of Canora, SK, announces his peaceful passing on June 18, 2018, at the age of 100 years. Paul was born on the family farm in the Mikado-Mazeppa District, SK on July 25, 1917. The fourth son and fourth youngest child of ten children born to Blasko and Eva (Blaz) Derkatch, Paul grew up on the family farm and attended Mazeppa School. As a young man, he developed a strong work ethic, which was evident throughout his life. In 1937, when his parents semi-retired and moved from the farm to Mikado, Paul took over the farming operations. On October 20, 1940, he married Kathleen Hubelit. In 1941, Paul trained for the Canadian Army in Regina, SK, but was discharged from service after contracting yellow jaundice. Kathleen and Paul were blessed with six children: four sons, Kenneth, Benson, Irvin and Wayne and two daughters, Sharon and Kathy. In 1952, they moved from the homestead to Preeceville, SK, where they owned and operated the Preeceville Grill for two years, while still farming. In 1954, the family relocated to Canora, SK, where they resided until 2002. They were active members of St. Andrew’s United Church, Canora, SK. Paul continued with the farming operation until 1968, when they sold the farm land. While semi-retired, Paul worked for the local Imperial Oil dealer, as the ESSO fuel truck driver until 1984. Paul and Kathleen enjoyed the summer outings to Good Spirit Lake, Crystal Lake and Madge Lake, where the children took swimming lessons and evenings were spent around campfires with relatives. They loved to travel and visited many parts of Canada and United States over the years.

In January 2002, Kathleen had a stroke and after hospitalization, required nursing home care. That year, to be closer to some of their children and grandchildren, they moved to Saskatoon, SK. Paul was predeceased by Kathleen on September 2, 2005, after sixty-four years of marriage. Paul enjoyed gardening and took pride in his large raspberry patch in Canora. He was an avid hunter and fisherman; always feasting on a diet of fresh fish, or an elk or moose roast. He always believed in hard work and a healthy lifestyle, which may have been the secret to his longevity. Paul was a great fan of the Toronto Blue Jays and Toronto Maple Leafs and enjoyed curling, card games and billiards during the winter months. He loved and took great pride in his children, thirteen grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.

Paul was predeceased by his parents, Blasko and Eva; wife, Kathleen in 2005; and sons, Benson, in infancy, and Wayne in 2015. He is survived by his sons, Kenneth (Sylvia) Derkatch of Regina, SK and Irvin (Peggy) Derkatch of Williams Lake, BC; daughters, Sharon (Dale) Procyshen of Saskatoon, SK and Kathy Bridger (Jeff Pearson) of Calgary, AB; grandchildren: Mindy Derkatch (Scot Templeton), Kevin Derkatch and Corwin Derkatch (Maureen Currie); Troy Derkatch, Tera-Lee (Greg) Caverly and Shara-Dale (Doug) Ketter; Jeremy (Colette) Procyshen, Elliott Procyshen (Rikia Trischuk) and Alara Procyshen (Kirby Haveroen); Chelsea (David) Griffin and Tyler Derkatch; and Philip and Karra Bridger; and great-grandchildren: William and James Templeton; Lachlan Derkatch; Vanessa and Danika Caverly; Chase, Dane and Maggie Ketter; and Luke, Dominic and Brett Procyshen. Family, relatives and friends will always cherish memories of him. Words that describe Paul are graciousness, great patience, hospitality, generosity, hard-working and tolerance. All our love to him. A Celebration of Paul’s life was held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, July 7, 2018, from the Chapel of Leson’s Funeral Home, Canora, SK, with Velda Dahlin officiating. Interment followed in the Canora Cemetery. Those wishing to make expressions of sympathy may make donations to the Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation, as tokens of remembrance, in memory of Paul Derkatch. POZNIAK, Peter - Peter Pozniak passed away at the Canora Hospital on June 26, 2018, at the age of 96 years.

Peter and his twin brother John were born on March 22, 1922, sons of Harry and Mary (Franchewski) Pozniak. The twins were baptised in the Dobrowody Blessed Virgin Mary Ukrainian Catholic Church.

John died at the age of 11 months on March 4, 1923. Peter began attending Olesha School in 1929. There were over fifty children in one room!

He spoke fondly of his time there, particularly how he liked playing sports. He left school after his fifteenth birthday. He helped on his parents’ farm, as well as worked for other farmers cutting wood and cordwood, clearing bush and ploughing summer fallow with horses and a twobottom plough. At the age of 20, Peter was conscripted to join the Armed Forces. He trained on Vancouver Island. Once his training was complete, he was shipped to Esquimalt; then to Prince George, Terrace, Prince Rupert and the Pacific. For three years, he and his comrades would be on a 24-hour alert on the ocean front, watching for the enemy. Once his shift was complete, he would then take on additional hours protecting the army train which held light artillery. One of his utmost memories is how he liked the artillery. During his duties, he was injured once, in the side by shrapnel. Peter was the only one in his family who served in the Armed Forces. During this period of time, he and his family wrote letters back and forth to stay in touch. In the autumn of 1945, he travelled to Toronto where he became employed by Campbell’s Soup Co. He spent the winter there, with his brother Mike, and returned home in the spring to help with the family farm. The next winter (1946-1947), Peter returned to Toronto to work at Massey Harris. In the fall of 1947, he began farming on his own. On October 21, 1950, Peter married Olga Demyd who had moved to the Dobrowody district from the Loon Lake area. They had eight children, three sons and five daughters. He retired from farming in 1986, working closely with his sons, Allan and Gerald, as they took over the farming duties.

Thoroughly enjoying his life on the farm, he stayed in the same home until his hospitalization and death. He enjoyed looking after the yard and garden, as well as hauling grain during harvest.

He loved nothing more than taking a drive with Olga to see the countryside. They travelled across Canada several times, as well as visited extended family in the Ukraine. They spent time with their children, other relatives and friends as often as they were able to. Life was rich and full to the end. Peter was downto-earth; he was a kind and gentle soul. He was a progressive thinker long before it was in vogue. He was open-minded and non-judgemental. He was a great dancer, a keen card player and an avid reader. He enjoyed watching current events on television, as well as sports such as hockey, baseball and stampede wrestling (prior to the formation of WWE!). His faith and spirituality grounded him. A dedicated church-goer, he devoted a great deal of time to the care of the Dobrowody Blessed Virgin Mary Ukrainian Catholic Church. He was a member of the church committee for decades. He chose the Dobrowody cemetery as his final resting place, a logical ending to his devotion to the parish which he was committed and connected to for all his life. Peter is predeceased by his parents, Harry and Mary; his brothers, John, Joe, Steve and Mike; sister, Ethel; brothers-in-law, Don Babb, John Anaka and Steve Gulka; sister-in-law, Marie Pozniak and son-in-law, Wayne Derkatch. He leaves behind to cherish his memory, Olga, his beloved wife of 67 years; his eight children: Sandra (John Morrison), Allan (Rosemarie Kuzek), Gerald (Debora Woloschuk), Karen, Margaret (Mark Kochems), Shirley, Marianne (Reg Fogg), and Ivan (Monica Barabonoff); 18 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; brothers, Paul (Olga), Al (Mary) and Jerry (Shirley), and sisters, Florence (George Bilan) and Sylvia (Roger Olynyk); sister-in-law Jenny, and many, many nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends. In Peter’s honour, a Prayer Service was held on Monday, July 2, 2018, at 7:00 p.m. from the Chapel of Leson’s Funeral Home, Canora, SK. Funeral Liturgy was celebrated on Tuesday, July 3, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. from the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Ukrainian Catholic Church, Dobrowody, with Very Rev. Fr. Joakim Rac as Celebrant. Rite of Committal followed at the Blessed Virgin Mary Ukrainian Catholic Parish Cemetery. Those wishing to make expressions of sympathy may make donations to the Dobrowody Ukrainian Catholic Cemetery Fund, as tokens of remembrance, in memory of Peter Pozniak. When does one speak and when does one talk?

By Kaare Askildt I have always wondered what the difference would be between these two words.

I mean, you can talk the talk, but you have to speak the speech, which might give you something to talk about. I Googled speak vs talk, and this is what I found. Speak tends to be used for one-sided communications (e.g. she spoke to her employees), whereas talk implies a conversation or discussion between two or more people (e.g. everyone was talking when he walked into the room).

Speak is a little more formal than talk and is often used in polite requests.

Ole was a member of the local Rotary Club, and the president talked to Ole about giving a speech on the new driverless automobiles. Ole had been in the automotive business for more years than could be counted on all your fingers and he was well versed in the latest developments.

After the president talked to him, Ole agreed to make a speech that would be talked about for years.

He focused on the voice command features. You would give vocal com mands to Betty the onboard computer, by talking out loud. Your voice would be picked up by tiny microphones. If you don’t talk loud enough, then Betty responds by talking to you and asks you to speak louder when you talk to her.

After his speech, Ole became the talk of the town, and everybody wanted to speak to him to learn more about the talking features in the driverless automobiles.

Per was a blackjack dealer at the Troll Casino and Speakeasy. I have always wondered why it is called a speakeasy, because it is not easy to speak at a speakeasy, never mind talk.

Anyway, Knut had just been dealt a 13 hand, and speaking to his friend Terje, he wondered if he should tip the dealer or not.

Per overheard Knut say to Terje, “I know it’s not the dealer’s fault when I’m dealt a lousy hand, and conversely I know the dealer has nothing to do with it when I get dealt a good hand. Why should I give him a tip if it doesn’t make any difference?”

The dealer looked at the two of them and said, “Permission to speak?”

“What?” asked Knut.

“I’d like to talk to the both of you,” said Per, “about whether you should give me a tip or not.”

“Go ahead,” said Terje.

“Do you tip a waiter when you’re dining in a restaurant?” asked Per. “Of course.” Said Knut and Terje in unison.

“The waiter serves food, and I serve cards,” said Per, “so I should also get a tip.”

Knut considered this for a while, then looked at Per and said, “OK, but the waiter serves me exactly what I ask for, therefore, as I’m sitting here with a 13 hand, I’ll ask you to deal me an eight, and then I’ll give you a tip.”

Stein was a medical doctor sitting at home late one evening speaking with his wife Anne, a lawyer, who was talking about her day in court, when the telephone rang. Stein went to the study and picked it up. It was his colleague Herman who said, “Hey Stein, we need a fourth player for our poker game tonight. Truls had an emergency, so I’m calling you.”

“I’ ll be r ig ht ther e,” said Stein and hung up the phone.

“Who was that dear?” asked Anne.

“It was Herman,” said Stein. “He’s requesting that I get there right away.”

“Oh my,” said Anne, “is it serious?” “ O h y e s d e a r, ” s a i d

Stein, “I think it’s very serious. There are three doctors there already.”

Hans was planning a surprise for his wife Lena’s birthday. He had talked with a party planner, who suggested that Hans speak with Lena to learn what would make her the happiest. Hans went home, sat down with Lena and said, “My dear, I’ll make you the happiest woman on earth.”

Lena looked at Hans and said, “I’ll miss you.”

It was in the late morning on a very nice and hot Saturday. Reidar came out of the shower, looked out the window while drying himself and said to his wife Gudrun, “It’s too hot today to wear any clothes, what do you think the neighbours would say if I mowed the lawn in the nude?”

Gudrun smiled at him, shook her head and said, “They’ll take one look at you and decide that I married you for your money.”

Sven and Bjarne were walking home from a Rotary meeting after having listened to the guest speaker talking about the need to help those less fortunate.

They stopped at a bar for a nightcap, and saw a man that appeared to be drunk, swaying back and forth in his seat.

Sven approached the chap and was able to get his address. They decided to help him home, and Bjarne joined in to get the man out of his seat. But the guy fell down twice before they got him to the front door.

As they tried to steady him across the sidewalk, he fell down twice again.

The bartender had called a cab for them, and they were able to get the chap into the cab. They lifted him up the front steps, but he fell down on the stoop.

His wife came out to thank them for getting him home.

She was a bit perturbed and while looking around she said, “Whatever happened to his wheelchair?”

A steak supper was served to the competitors and some guests by the Canora Golf and Country Club.

Gus Wolos Memorial Golf Tournament held at Canora Golf Course The Gus Wolos Memorial Golf Tournament, also known as the Giver Go Classic, was held at the Canora Golf and Country Club on July 1.

The 13th annual event included a total of 66 competitors who were divided into 17 teams. The winning team recorded a nine-hole score of 34, two under par. The team

members were: Lorri Shewchuk, Amanda Popoff, Karen Tratch and Mark McTavish.

After Gus Wolos passed away in 2004. His family decided to honour his involvement in the community by supporting sports or other events, and by organizing the first Gus Wolos Memorial Golf Tournament in 2005. Since then it has become an

annual event.

A memorial fund was established by the family where any funds raised at the golf tournaments are donated back to the community.

Prior to July 1, a shelter was constructed between the green of Hole #6 and the tee-off of Hole No. 7. This shelter has been named “The Gus Stop” in his honour.

Previous donations have included: money toward the Chase Kraynick Memorial Splash Park, umbrellas for the swimming pool, blinds for the United Church, skating trainers for kids learning to skate and a donation to the Lions Club The golfers registered for the tournament were joined by a number of friends for the steak supper

put on by the Canora Golf and Country Club.

Fundraising items included a silent auction, a raffle table and the main prize draw known as the “Giver Go Package.”

The family said the next planned purchase from the memorial fund is a golf cart in honour of Gus Wolos for use at the Canora Golf Course.

Regulations passed allowing for ticketing of cannabis offences The Government of Saskatchewan has amended regulations to allow for the ticketing of numerous offences under The Cannabis Control (Saskatchewan) Act. Ticket amounts will range from $200 up to a maximum of $2,250 depending on the offence.

Passing of these regulations is another step toward the legalization of cannabis in Canada, said a release from the ministry of justice.

Offences subject to ticketing will

include: • $200 ticket for possessing or distributing more than 30 grams of dried cannabis in a public place • $200 ticket for consuming cannabis in a public place • $1,000 ticket for consuming cannabis at school, on school grounds or at a child care facility • $300 ticket if a minor is caught purchasing, possessing, consuming, or selling cannabis • $750 ticket for anyone caught

selling or giving cannabis to a minor • $2,250 ticket if a permittee or employee of a retail cannabis location fails to demand proof of age and/or if a permittee sells or distributes cannabis to a minor • $300 ticket for possessing, consuming or distributing cannabis in a vehicle, which will not apply if someone is transporting cannabis from a legal point of purchase to a legal point of consumption • $200 ticket for possessing or

consuming cannabis in a campground when a cannabis prohibition is in effect These new regulations that apply to cannabis are similar to current rules regarding alcohol. The ticketing rules for cannabis under The Summary Offences Procedure (Miscellaneous) Amendment Regulations, 2018, will not come into force until The Cannabis Control (Saskatchewan) Act is proclaimed this fall.

These regulations follow the release earlier this year of the Saskatchewan Cannabis Framework, which outlines a plan for the legal and responsible distribution, sale and use of cannabis in the province, the release said.

The federal government has indicated cannabis will be legal in Canada on October 17. Until that time, current laws and rules apply and cannabis for recreational purposes remains illegal
