Canora Composite School holds Pink Day to promote standing up to bullying Students and staff at CCS (Canora Composite School) and thousands of others across the province encouraged each other to stand up and be someone’s hero by wearing the iconic pink T-shirts during K+S Pink Day on February 27, said Curtis Baillie, CCS teacher Students are raising awareness of bullying issues and inspiring others to stand up for each other when they see bullying happening.

Research shows that in most instances, bullying will stop within 10 seconds when someone safely intervenes, according to a release.

Pink Day began in 2007, when two high school students in Nova Scotia spoke

out against bullying. They asked their peers to wear pink to school after they heard a male classmate had been bullied for wearing a pink shirt. Their act of kindness sparked a worldwide movement. To continue the momentum, the K+S Pink Day campaign brings together schools and communities to wear pink and stand together against bullying, said the release.

K+S Potash Canada has been working alongside the Canadian Red Cross for five years to help Saskatchewan youth learn how to recognize, prevent and respond to bullying situations. For each official K+S Pink Day shirt sold, the Red Cross can

reach one student with the information and tools they need to safely address bullying behaviour.

Also supported by Harvard Broadcasting and Saskatoon Media Group, all proceeds from K+S Pink Day go directly to supporting Red Cross bullying prevention education in Saskatchewan.

Cyberbullying prevention program relaunches as Be Kind Online SaskTel has announced that I Am Stronger, one of Canada’s oldest dedicated cyberbullying prevention and awareness programs, is transforming to better meet the needs of a new generation by becoming Be Kind Online.

Invermay resident involved in lobbying effort on Parliament Hill Mike Kaminski of Invermay accepted an invitation to participate in the national lobby in Ottawa on February 20.

Kaminski is the first vice-president of the National Pensioners Federation (NPF.) He said the group collaborated with eight other national organizations over the last several months under the Vibrant Voices Network to bring forward a campaign that highlights key focus areas of interest heading into the federal election 2019.

“Together our combined voice represents more than

2 million seniors and their families,” said Kaminski.

“On February 20 we came together under the supporting efforts of NARF (National Association of Retirees) and RTO (Retired Teachers of Ontario.) Their c a p a b l e s t a ff m e m b e r s organized and secured a lobby of more than 20 key Members of Parliament.”

The goal of the lobby was to highlight key issues for the senior membership of the various groups.

“We are bringing forward the need to implement a national seniors’ strategy, make retirement income more secure and prioritize a

national pharmacare plan,” explained Kaminski.

The following nine organizations partnered under the Vibrant Voices Network banner for the Federal Election 2019 L o b b y : N P F, C a n a d i a n Association of Retired Teachers (ACER-CART), Canadian Federation of Pensioners, Canadian Health Coalition, CARP (Canadian Association of Retired Persons), College and University Retirees Associations of Canada (CURAC), International Longevity Centre Canada, National Association of Federal Retirees and

Retired Teachers of Ontario (RTO/ERO).

Following a full day of lobbying the delegates attended question period and gathered for an evening reception hosted by Filomena Tassi, minister of seniors.

But Kaminski said the lobbying work is far from over.

“On behalf of our collective membership, the seniors will continue to speak to our elected officials to tell them that Canadians deserve a government who proudly leads us all together in economic safety and dignity,” concluded Kaminski.

Keen Age Centre hosts January and February birthday celebration and sing-along Keen Age Centre seniors held their January and February Birthday Social on February 24 with 35 members in attendance at the Keen Age Centre in Canora.

Seven persons were present for the birthday celebration, said Kotzer.

January birthday celebrants were: John Kowal of the entertainment group, Mellvina Dergousoff, Lucille Dergousoff, and Grace Chase, who was celebrating her 101st birthday. Celebrating February birthdays were: George Johnson, Irene Homeniuk and Nettie Gulka.

“January celebrants were honoured to have Grace present to celebrate her 101 years,” said Kotzer.

“Happy Birthday was sung when she arrived at the Centre and again to the other celebrants, and their photograph was taken.”

Lorraine Katelnikoff said grace and then “all enjoyed the delightful lunch.”

Kotzer was the photographer and the greeter at the

door. She thanked all those who came to celebrate the birthdays and those who stayed to help with the cleanup.

Saskatchewan coroners service completes investigation into Humboldt collision The Saskatchewan Coroners Service has completed its investigation into a collision between a coach bus and a semi-tractor trailer on April 6, 2018, according to a release. The collision occurred at the intersection of Highway No. 35 and Highway No. 335 in rural Saskatchewan.

The investigation has determined that 16 people died as a result of the collision. In all of the deaths, the cause of death was injuries due to a motor vehicle collision, said the release. The manner of death was accidental.

Pursuant to The Coroners Act, 1999, the following recommendations are being made: 1. That the ministry of highways and infrastructure review its policy with respect to the installation of traffic control devices

and signs at and in advance of the intersection, having regard to the sight lines and the expected speed and volume of traffic.

2. That the Saskatchewan Highway Patrol review its policy and operating procedures to ensure stricter compliance with respect to regulations and standards for commercial vehicle drivers.

3 . T h a t t h e Saskatchewan Coroners Service create and train staff with respect to a mass fatality plan. This includes reviewing policy and standard operating procedures with respect to identifying the deceased.

4. That SGI work with the trucking industry to implement standardized and possibly mandatory training for truck drivers.

5. That the Saskatchewan

Health Authority review policy and standard operating procedures with respect to the identification of persons coming into their care resulting from a mass casualty/fatality event.

6. That Transport Canada: • Continue supporting the development of regulations which enhance or improve the national safety codes with respect to driver training and electronic logging devices.

• Create regulations mandating the installation of seatbelts in highway public transport buses.

The families and parties to whom the recommendations are directed have been provided with the report.

The chief coroner has determined that no inquest will be held.

Coroners are authorized to conduct investigations

into all sudden, unexpected and unnatural deaths occurring in Saskatchewan. The

A Decade Ago Nathan Hrynchyshyn, Todd Bobyk and Oneyx Dickson showed off the gold medals claimed by the Canora Cougars senior boys basketball team, after winning the Conference 2A championship in Langenburg. ***** A suspicious death in Usherville was being investigated by members of the Canora/Sturgis RCMP detachment and the RCMP Regina Major Crimes unit, said Sgt. Terry Wilson, head of the Canora/Sturgis detachment. ***** Roxanne Olynyk, who grew up south of Canora, was studying business administration while on a volleyball scholarship at the University of Regina, where she played for the Cougars. ***** Karen Rongve, who was well known at Crystal Lake where he spent his summers for many years, was the face of the Saskatchewan Kidney Foundation’s campaign to mark World Kidney Day, as he dealt with reduced kidney function, mainly caused by hypertension. ***** Rod Petrychyn won the Canada Goose award and Greg Landstad took the duck award at the awards banquet of the Canora branch of the Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation. ***** Students and staff at Canora Composite School were entertained by Ian Stewart, a well-known hypnotist from Nova Scotia, said Jerraie Matsalla, school reporter. ***** Canora/Sturgis RCMP had received numerous complaints regarding the manner in which snowmobiles were being driven around Canora, said Sgt. Terry Wilson.

Disclosure from government far too slow For those of us who had spent our adult, working lives demanding full-disclosure from governments, the SCN-Lavalin fiasco may just be the latest depressing episode.

Or at least, this has been the case so far.

As of the writing of this, Jody Wilson-Raybould, former federal justice minister, was getting ready to testify before the House of Commons Justice Committee.

But while she had received a partial waiver that would allow her to disclose some conversations with government officials surrounding the prosecution of the international Montrealbased engineering and construction company, even WilsonRaybould seemed to be downplaying expectations on what she could say.

Wilson-Raybould had already written to the justice committee saying that while she would be willing to speak, she wouldn’t necessarily be able to speak freely because on-going constraints “do nothing to release me from any restrictions that apply to communications while I served as minister of veterans affairs and in relation to my resignation from that post or my presentation to cabinet after I had resigned.”

Combined with cabinet and confidentially by which WilsonRaybould and all ministers who swear the oath of office must abide, it seems increasingly doubtful the public is going to get the full disclosure it deserves from government.

This always seems to be the case in government where its members use their majority to hide information from the public.

Certainly, one gets the sense from the behaviour by Liberal

government members that hearing the truth from WilsonRaybould, or anyone else, is about the last thing they want.

The Conservative and NDP MPs on the committee were justifiably angry last month when the majority Liberal members on the committee initially used their numbers to block not only Wilson-Raybould, but also Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s chief of staff Katie Telford or former principal secretary Gerald Butts (who, mysteriously, has resigned his position.)

According to Liberal MPs last month, having critical witnesses who could actually answer questions about allegations of undue pressure placed on the former justice minister isn’t actually the kind of thing lawmakers on a justice committee do.

“The role of the justice committee is not an investigative body,” said Randy Boissonnault, Liberal MP, “At best, committees of the House of Commons are political theatre that can occasionally achieve good studies.”

But lest one feel too bad for the frustrated Conservatives on the committee, it’s worth noting that under Stephen Harper,

former prime minster, they pulled the same stunt to block key witnesses from testifying at the Senate hearings investigating Senator Mike Duffy’s expenses.

Moreover, Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer isn’t exactly making any commitments to do anything differently. Nor would Scheer commit to changing the rules around criminal prosecution of SNC-Lavalin related to the deferred prosecution agreement that the engineering company was allegedly lobbying for in its meetings with Trudeau and others. (Scheer was among those that met privately with SNC-Lavalin’s lobbyists.)

And here in Saskatchewan, we witnessed Saskatchewan Party government backbenchers blocking opposition requests that key government employees come forward to address legitimate questions on the overspending for land purchased by the Global Transportation Hub just outside Regina.

But as frustrating as this is, maybe it’s important to recognize that change comes slowly and in small increments.

There was a time not so long ago when the public didn’t have accountability through freedom of information or disclosure through the timely release of budgets, and quarterly and mid-year updates.

The political system resisted each and every one of these changes, too. Governments, once in power, don’t want to change rules that are to their advantage. But change did happen.

Sometimes, the best we can do is watch for the events that produce small changes.

That Wilson-Raybould is even appearing before this committee may just be such a small, baby step forward.

Okay Mother Nature All things considered... you’ve made your point

The other night I was just about to drift off to sleep, all nestled snugly under my down-filled quilt, when a loud crack startled me. (You know the sound, the one where you swear the entire house is going to come down on your head at any moment.)

I knew the frightfully cold temperature that night was responsible for that shotgun snap, but this particular one was louder and sharper than any I had ever heard in the past. I silently wondered if our house and

its beams could withstand the deep freeze weather it was enduring.

Just that day I had been reading an article where some romantic had penned, “Winters are never cold if you have warm memories.”

How utterly ridiculous!

Obviously that person had never experienced a cold snap on the Canadian prairies. Nothing upsets Canadians more than some outsider telling us how to survive living in one of the coldest places on the planet. (And, yes, we have been

colder than the Antarctic.)

Before someone offers an opinion on such meteorological matters, I suggest that person be required to endure two weeks of a Canadian winter when an Arctic front decides to move in and settle down for a long visit. And if folks don’t have two weeks to spare, then standing at the corner of Wiggins and College in Saskatoon, on a day when the temperature drops to -35 and the wind comes howling up from the South Saskatchewan

River at a brisk 40km/ hour might suffice. (I can personally attest to those intolerable conditions. As a student I often walked to class at the University of Saskatchewan in frigid conditions and waited at that spot for the traffic light to allow me to cross; at a sprint I might add.

Well, if you can call it a sprint when you’re dressed in five layers of clothing.)

“But it’s a dry cold,” offer our West Coast friends.

Try telling that to someone whose eyelashes have a

few centimetres of ice on them and resemble huge frozen butterflies. A “dry cold” is of little consolation when you can’t feel your fingers and toes anymore, or you have trouble breathing because your nostrils have frozen together.

I don’t think poet Robert Service was comforted by the so-called “dry cold” when he wrote, “Talk of your cold/ through the parka’s fold it stabbed like a driven nail.” (Now there was a fellow who knew

what he was talking about.)

I keep thinking, “This has to end soon.” But the brilliant, huge sundogs in the sky and the tinny, crisp sound of the train whistle tell me otherwise.

I hope that by the time you read this column, Mother Nature will have relented. After all, she has already proven who’s the boss when it comes to the weather.

Most of us have a healthy dose of humility and see ourselves as unworthy sinners. In fact, we overdose and excuse ourselves from doing God’s work because of our sins. That is just wrong.

God gives us talents we need to use in freedom as his sons and daughters. God does not choose the qualified, he qualifies the chosen. This may involve struggle, as we see in this example from Father Brendan McGuire’s God Gives Gifts Without Merit.

After sharing that he had been a victim of sexual abuse, McGuire relates a prayerful discussion he had with God. Why would God continue to allow this priest who abused him to have a gift of healing? He healed hundreds or even thousands.

“The Lord said to me that he gives his gifts to all of us without merit. He also gives us the freedom to use those gifts for the good of others. But I would argue back with the Lord: ‘I don’t understand. That was a good plan. I get that, but now remove it because he is abusing; why didn’t you do that?’

The Lord said: ‘I give everyone my gifts. And when they do not use those gifts… I do not remove them.

Brendan, if I did that then I would have to take a lot of gifts back from you.’

I responded. ‘Okay. All right then. I’ll agree with that then. Okay. Let’s stick with that plan.’”

“The reality is that God gives his gifts without merit,” said McGuire. “It is not because we deserve it. Our role as disciples is to discover those gifts and then use them for the good of humanity.”

McGuire shares the realization that we are all saints and sinners. We all have weaknesses. We have all failed to use our gifts for the fullness of what God has intended.

But there is a deeper challenge to responding to the use of

God’s gifts than the morality of our daily actions.

The devil would keep us busy agonizing over our daily sins and weaknesses. Ideally, he keeps us putting off the really great plans God has for all of us. “I’m just a nobody,” we say.

“You may not be anyone, but I Am,” God says. “Aim a little higher.”

An old adage says, “It’s not the things you do in life that you regret, it’s the things you don’t do.”

In a paper entitled The Ideal Road Not Taken, Cornell psychologist researchers found that, when asked to name their single biggest regret in life, 76 per cent of participants said they didn’t fulfill their ideal self.

“When it comes to your dreams and aspirations, people are more likely to let them just drift by unrealized, and that’s what really stings later in life,” said the Cornell study.

“God doesn’t require us to succeed, he only requires that you try,” said St. Teresa of Calcutta.

“Everyone has been made for some particular work and the desire for that work has been put in every heart,” said Jalaluddin Rumi.

“The greatest achievement was at first and for a time a dream. The oak sleeps in the acorn,” said James Allen.

Possible pitfalls of a “sell Canadian” marketing system The other day, on one of those glorious afternoons when I was actually off for holidays, I was perusing Facebook primarily as a time sink, when I happened upon a post that I found interesting.

The post called for Canadian gas stations to sell only Canadian gas, and for stores to sell only Canadian beef.

While the post was rather specific in focusing attention on only two things, it made sense in terms of wanting to support the economy of Western Canada as oil and beef are rather significant to the region.

On the surface the idea would seem to make excellent sense. Frankly I’ve often thought there should be a maple leaf tag on any product made in Canada so that consumers could support local producers, and local jobs.

But, then I paused long enough to remember items in a store are not so easily defined by some arbitrary border line on a map.

And, of course it’s important to remember the Canadian beef and oil sectors do rely heavily on export sales to be viable.

We only need to recall what happened in 2003 when a case of BSE (bovine spongiform encephalopathy) was identified in a cow in Alberta. Borders closed to Canadian exports of cattle and beef and the country was left with mountains of beef to deal with in a country with not enough people to deal with it. The cattle sector was shaken to its core with massive losses piling up until the BSE scare passed.

The Canadian agriculture sector in particular relies on access to export markets to be viable. It would be

difficult to access those markets if we suddenly went to a Canadian only in-store system here.

The idea of a label works no better.

Producers in Canada fought long and hard against the idea of country of origin labelling (COOL), in the United States because it was seen as a major detriment to market access of Canadian beef.

The issue becomes when does beef become only from a particular country? Is a calf born in Alberta forever Canadian? Or, if that calf is sold to a U.S. feedlot when it’s 500-pounds, does it become American beef at some point as it grows toward being ground into hamburger?

And, what about from a Canadian perspective, what do you label that same calf born here, finished in the States and then the steaks sold in a Canadian store?

The complexity of trade, and the need for as open access as possible to foreign markets unfortunately make a sell Canadian only system one more likely to hamstring key sectors than it is to be supportive of Canada’s economy.

Did the convoy to Ottawa accomplish its goals?

It all started in early December to mid-December; when protests, many of which had participants sporting yellow vests, sprouted up in most significant oilpatch towns in Western Canada.

Before the end of the year, many, including Estevan, Lloydminster and Virden (in our coverage area) had held convoys made principally of heavy oilfield trucks rolling down their main drag, or in the case of Manitoba, from Virden to Brandon. The one in Estevan saw 427 units, the vast majority heavy trucks, take an hour to roll down the centre of town, blaring their horns.

The frustration with the current Justin Trudeau-led Liberal government’s energy policies had reached a tipping point.

After years upon years of watching anti-oil, anti-pipeline, anti-everything protesters fill the airways, of our industry being beaten down, the oilpatch collectively decided to fight back.

Like a boxing movie, where the hero is beaten senseless throughout most of the fight, he gathers his strength in the final round to summon up one roundhouse punch. That was the United We Roll! convoy to Ottawa.

Now let me be clear. This convoy was not as large as most of the media, and its organizers, made it out to be. I stood along Highway No. 1 east of Virden in -30 C with a strong wind and counted as the convoy rolled by. I had three video cameras rolling plus my still camera. My count was 57, plus or minus two. Only 15 were semis, and one was a bus.

Virden is important because it’s the last significant oil production eastbound until you swim 315 kilometres offshore of St. John’s, Newfoundland.

Now, the question is, is that a big deal? Does it matter if it was 57, 157, or 570? Obviously, more is better. But was it enough?

Yes, apparently, it was.

The reality is the convoy was big enough to make an impact. It got noticed, with much more hitting power per participant than most protests in Canada ever accomplish.

Two national party leaders, Andrew Scheer of the Conservatives, and Maxime Bernier, of his own newly created Peoples Party of Canada, spoke to the gathered protesters who for some unknown reason were forced to stand in kneedeep snow instead of the wide-open sidewalks. (On the much more sedate Day 2, the convoy protest was allowed to hold their rally on the dry sidewalk. Draw your own conclusions from that.)

In addition to speakers that took part with the convoy, a number of Conservative MPs also spoke. Even more posted photos on social media of them with the convoy parked in front of Parliament.

While it wasn’t the lead story, almost every major media organization covered it for several days as it approached Ottawa and then held its rally.

A very significant portion of the columnist class (myself, included) has written about them. Rex Murphy, of the National Post, clearly understood the significance of this convoy.

Canada noticed.

I don’t know if this is a new thing in protests, but the convoy also happened upon a new tactic that I’ve never seen before; a weapon of mass audio destruction, the semi air horn.

Whenever the small number of counter protestors standing amongst the semis got a little antsy, those in the trucks let out a collective blast for which they had no response. As in, “I see your yelling at us and raise you 150 decibels of air horn.”

Watching the live feeds was almost comical. I feel sorry for the cops who formed a wall between the protesters and counter-protesters. Their ears must have been ringing for days.

Many of the trucks were parked just below the Prime Minister’s office. Certainly, those windows shook with the convoy protesters’ collective rage every few minutes.

Those semis present, along with the rest of the convoy, were sufficient to line Wellington Street in front of Parliament. They were enough to get the message across to those inside.

Will this convoy’s efforts stop Bill C-69 from being passed by the Senate? Not likely. If the unelected Senate starts regularly defeating bills from the elected House of Commons, we are soon going to find ourselves in a constitutional crisis.

Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer expressed his solidarity with those who had driven across Western Canada to voice their dissatisfaction with the energy policies, among other things, of the Liberal government. While many people and organizations are hanging their hopes on the Senate, I fear they will be disappointed.

The reality is, for the convoy’s energy-focused message of defeating Bill C-69 (the no-more-pipelines bill), Bill C-48 (oil tanker ban off B.C.’s norther coast), the carbon tax, and construction of export pipelines (Trans Mountain, Energy East) are to be accomplished, there’s really only one solution: a change in government.

There’s no way Maxime Bernier will accomplish anything except split the vote. If he does that sufficiently, there will be no change in government, and thus no change in energy policy.

That means, like it or not, the only hope those who drove across the country have is to see Andrew Scheer elected as prime minister in the fall.

That he joined them as they stood in the deep snow to stand at their podium and tell them he’s with them speaks volumes. That he would do so despite all those who have sought to discredit the convoy, also speaks volumes.

There’s one person who can defeat Trudeau in the fall, and he said, “We’ve got your back, we’re fighting for you.”

If they sought to change energy policy, to that end, did the convoy accomplish its goals?

Yes, it did.

C-69; which was referred to the Committee after its second reading in the Senate on December 12, would make fundamental changes to the way resource infrastructure projects are reviewed and approved in Canada in the future, according to a release.

“Bill C-69 will stop, not start, major energy projects and must be scrapped in its current form,” Eyre said.

“Our government believes this new approach to environmental assessments would create significant

uncertainty and lead to continued capital flight from our resource sectors. Bill C-69 disregards provincial jurisdiction and fails to recognize the proven track record and expertise of provincial regulators.”

The major issues of concern to the Government of Saskatchewan include: unpredictable and unreasonable timelines; new, subjective criteria; opportunities for duplication and jurisdictional overreach; and the removal of the current standing test, said the release.

The elimination of the standing test means that any organization or individual would be allowed to participate in a public review process of any major project, including a new mine or pipeline, which could dramatically increase costs and the timeline for environmental approval. New, subjective criteria, such as the analysis of the “intersection of sex, gender and other identity factors,” would also be introduced, leading to further delays.

In August, at the

Energy and Mines Ministers’ Conference in Iqaluit, Nunavut, both Saskatchewan and Ontario did not sign on to the final conference communique, citing Bill C-69 as a threat to Canada’s energy sector competitiveness.

The Government of Saskatchewan is not alone in its criticism of this federal legislation. Major industry associations also oppose Bill C-69 and have warned that no new large projects will ever proceed in the future if Bill C-69 is implemented.

Reader disappointed with Conservatives and Liberals in SNC-Lavalin controversy Back in the days of my youth it was much easier to get a list of donators complete with amounts that went from corporations or individuals to political parties.

In that youth I had studied under the old Social Creditors whose original purpose to exist was to hold the big banks to account. So, when Trudeau Sr. gave the power to create our money supply to the big banks and then Mulroney gave those same banks a “temporary reserve

holiday,”, I became curious as to how much money those banks were giving those two parties.

That information back then was not that easily accessible and in the convoluted methods of donations that now exist to transfer funding to political parties, it is even more difficult to unearth. I searched diligently and finally found a large volume at the public library in Saskatoon that provided the corporate information I had sought. It turned out half the banks

gave generously to the Liberals while the other half gave generously to the Conservatives.

In following the SNCLavalin fiasco, it becomes quite important information as to who and how much money exchanges hands and how that money translates into political influence. To think that SNCLavalin or other corporate giants don’t donate generously to the Conservatives or didn’t carry on immoral, anti-Canadian or possibly illegal activities during

Harper’s tenure in power and that those activities weren’t overlooked is ridiculous. The clarifying element that was missing from Harper’s “throw them under the bus” philosophy was an organized person with courage, integrity and old-fashioned Canadian morals to stand up to him.

J o d y Wi l s o n - R a y b o u l d hopefully has changed that crucial flaw in our democracy forever.

Scheer to go for the jugular on this issue when he has proven that he is equally capable, ready and willing to do exactly the same thing, is amusing. I learned to use the remedial and soothing overtones of amusement long ago because, as a politically active patriot, if I took these corporate obedient puppets seriously, I could easily tip over the deep end, throw my hands in the air with frustration, and totally disengage from my democratic duty to fight

hard for a democracy that has integrity and protects the taxpaying public from these abuses.

Trudeau Jr. was supposed to incorporate the integrity of greater public participation into our democratic system when he promised to implement proportional representation. But he threw that remedial promise under the bus at the first possible opportunity.

Riding history to save history for snowmobiles

By Devin Wilger / Yorkton This Week Vintage snowmobile enthusiasts gathered south of Willowbrook to both ride a bit of history and save it.

The Happy Centre School Vintage Snowmobile Rally brought together sleds older than 1981 to go on a rally through the area on February 23.

Over 60 riders took part in the 2019 event.

Stephanie Lockhart, one of the organizers, said that this was the most successful rally they’ve ever done in the three years since they’ve started doing the derby. The riders took a 23mile trip on the sleds.

More people are getting involved all the time, said Lockhart, and they’re happy to see that more people are coming out and more

people are participating. “ I t ’s s u r p r i s i n g h o w many people like the vintage ski-doos, tinker with them and bring them out.

You’re starting to see the younger people bring out the old ski-doos, that’s cool too, that they’re getting into it and like the challenge, because they might not be running like the brand new 2018 models.”

It turns into a mobile show, and Lockhart said half the appeal of the rally is just people bringing out all their hardware.

“These guys, they spend more time looking at what everybody has, I think, than actually doing the derby. It’s almost its own community.”

Although the rally was meant for snowmobiles made before 1981, newer

machines were allowed on the route. Riders had to pay an entry fee, but they were there strictly as support vehicles. Their riders were not allowed to win prizes at the event. That was to keep the focus on the vintage machines, Lockhart said, but she knows some people want to bring their partners along who don’t have their own vintage machine, or just were not too sure that their vintage machine will be as reliable as they need so a newer snowmobile nearby might give some peace of mind.

All money raised went to maintain the Happy Centre School where the ride began and ended. Lockhart said that the building is part of the province’s rural history, and part of history that is disappearing around

the province. While many people in Saskatchewan were educated in schools like the one-room Happy Centre School, there are fewer buildings like the school around these days.

“There are not a lot of actual school houses left that are standing. Lots of them, you’ll see them marked with a sign that says “here was such-andsuch school,” but all that’s left is the property which is now turned into cow pasture. One of the unique things about this place is that it’s still in good shape.

The reason it’s still in good shape is because the community has made a point of that, throwing on functions, volunteering their time.”

The school is not in perfect shape, however.

Fish On Fish Derby receives rave reviews Wa r m e r p a r ticipants and 58 fish meant the Northshore R e v i t a l i z a t i o n Committee received rave reviews during and following the 2019 FishOn Fish Derby.

Changes to the event for 2019 included: allowing on ice parking, electronics, pop-up shelters/ tents, and a new location that lead to more fish caught, said a release.

On February 16 about 400 fishermen, 40 volunteers, and hundreds of tents made Northshore Fishing Lake look like a tent village for a few hours.

In the end, 58 fish were caught and approximately $35,000 in prizes was given away. Francis Kayseas of Fishing Lake

won the event with a fish weighing 5 pounds, 10.8 ounces. Kayseas had a choice between a Polaris Ranger 500 from Edfield Motors in Foam Lake and $10,000.

Wi t h a 5 p o u n d , 6 ounce fish, second place winner Joan Campeau had a choice between $3000 and a Kubota 48in zero turn lawnmower donated by Wheatbelt Sales in Wadena.

Both winners chose the cash payment.

Additionally, there were 90 prizes that were awarded for some caught fish, some raffle prizes, 50/50, and more.

Good Spirit Lake Lamplighter Loppet draws largest turnout ever

Bright lights guided the cross-country skiers to and from the warm up shelter during the Lamplighter Loppet hosted by the Good Spirit Cross Country Ski Club on February 16.

Participants kept their eyes on the balloons during the balloon game, which required players to keep their balloons from hitting the floor without using their hands.

The Good Spirit Cross Country Ski Club hosted its ninth annual Lamplighter Loppet on February 16.

It was an extremely successful event with over 70 participants, the most in its history, according to Darryl Stevenson, club president.

“There were many first time skiers, which included several first time night skiers.” reported Stevenson.

“There was a good turnout from a newly formed Nordic ski club at Preeceville.”

Participants came from as far away as Morris, Man. (south of Winnipeg) and Edmonton. In addition to Preeceville, Saskatchewan skiers in attendance came from Canora, Regina,

overdressed and upon return to the Rec Hall discovered their clothes were wet from perspiration.”

Stevenson said he was pleased to see a wide range in ages among the skiers.

“The youngest participant was four months old and pulled by parents in a ski pod sled. There were several large families with young skiers this year. A larger group of teenagers took part as well.

The oldest skiers were mid to late 60’s in age,” estimated Stevenson.

After the skiers returned from the trail, the indoor activities got underway.

“The participants were divided into two teams and competed in several relay games,” he recalled. “One involved moving M&M’s by picking them up using straws and placing them at the other end of the table to match a colored drawing.

“Next was a balloon game where players were required to keep their balloons from hitting the floor without using their hands.

“Then we had a carpet relay to music where two players pulled a team member on a piece of carpet holding a balloon the length of the hall and the rider threw the balloon over a table. When the music stopped the team with the most balloons won.

“The final game had two players place a balloon between them and dance without dropping the balloon while not using their hands.

The last couple to hold their balloon were the winners.

“These games were

A Loppet is not a race, but rather an event where participants are able to ski at their own pace and cover any distance they wish.

“For example, some youngsters may decide to only ski one kilometre or less in contrast to competitive skiers who may ski several loops of the trail and cover 10 to 20 km in the allotted time,” said Stevenson. “On average a majority of skiers made it to the warmup shelter on this night, which is an 8 km return distance.”

“Several skiers commented that after previously skiing several other trails in province, ours were the best they had encountered this year,” said Stevenson.

“The club’s ski trails were groomed the previous day

by Derek Sebastian, a club member, which allowed them to freeze overnight with the temperature around minus 30C. Skiers described the glide as incredible.”

Stevenson said to his knowledge, the Lamplighter Loppet is the only night time event of it’s kind in western Canada. Skiing began around 6:30 p.m. and participants were required to be back in the registration area by no later than 9:30 p.m.

“The names of skiers are entered on a card when registering,” explained Stevenson.

“When returning to the registration desk, they must pick up their cards. Organizers then are able to tell if everyone has returned. There is also a backup process to ensure no one is left on the ski trails, by having two of the club’s volunteers sweep the ski trails after the required finish time. It should be noted that there have not been any injury incidents at this event in it’s nine-year history.”

After an extended stretch of extreme cold, temperatures moderated just in time for the Loppet.

“It was minus 14C during the ski event, which is perfect for skiing,” reported Stevenson. “Many participants expecting cooler weather found themselves

Stevenson said in addition to the enjoyment of the skiing, the event allowed participants from many different clubs to socialise and meet avid skiers from other regions.

One of the highlights of the evening for many of those in attendance was meeting a participating couple presently living in Kamsack, but they spoke only Russian.

“The husband is working in the Norquay area on

a temporary work visa and both are experienced skiers,” stated Stevenson. “Their accompanying friend and interpreter stated that the couple thoroughly enjoyed the event and the evening’s festivities.

In my view they were also the best dancers.”

Stevenson acknowledged the many volunteers who contributed their time and labour, as well as the Good Spirit Provincial Park for providing the hall and assistance in putting on the event.

“The Lamplighter Loppet continues to be a successful event for the Good Spirit Cross Country Ski Club and we are confident it will continue to grow in ski seasons to come,” he concluded.

After the skiing, participants took part in a number of action-packed games and relays, including the carpet pull game, a relay to music where two players were required to pull a team member holding a balloon the length of the hall to a table, where the rider had to throw the balloon over the table. After the music stopped, the team with the most balloons over the table was the winner.

Canora and area residents and motorists show support for Telemiracle

Mollie Jaeb, Grade 7 student, was the lead runner as the Mini Miracle Marathon started out from Canora on the way to Sturgis on February 28.

On a bright, sunny day on February 28 with the temperature hovering around minus 15C, nearly $2,500 was raised

by Sturgis Kinsmen and members of the Sturgis Composite High School SRC (Student Representative Council) during their Mini Miracle Marathon on February 28.

Daniel Wasylenchuk, organizer, said the money was raised by canvassing the town of Canora and on the highway during the 38-kilometre trip from Canora to Sturgis.

A total of 15 runners took turns running, usually one kilometre at a time. During the run, motorists were encouraged to stop and contribute to the cause.

Living Room Live Canada’s classical house concert network “Have you ever experienced a live concert from a few feet away in someone’s living room?” Living Room Live is setting out to offer just that, connecting new and experienced hosts with classical musicians for cozy house concerts, said a release.

House concerts have been around for years, and one may be surprised to learn just how many exist; they are generally private events, with hosts building up their own guest list over time. Acoustic music is arguably best suited to a house, where musicians play for a small group of attentive listeners who can appreciate the music from close up, often with a glass of wine or coffee in hand.

The majority of house concert organizations, however, cater to every acoustic genre except classical; that’s where Living Room Live comes in.

The SSFA is a volunteer, non-government organization formed in 1984 in response to the need for an activity program for people fifty years of age and older, according to information provided by the SSFA. The SSFA is directed by a volunteer board of directors representing all districts of Saskatchewan. The main objective of the association is to promote active living, wellness and participation, said the information.

SSFA operates with funding from the Saskatchewan Lotteries and district fundraising endeavors.

The main objective of the SSFA 55+ games is to promote active living, wellness and participation for adults 55 years of age and older. They

may participate in the district and provincial games and can qualify for the national games.

District competitions are normally held every year while the provincial and national games are held every other year.

Norquay holds annual seniors bonspiel A total of 25 teams participated in the annual Norquay Seniors Bonspiel, held from February 18 to 21.

The bonspiel was a success, according to organizer Larry Dahl.

“The bonspiel is played

on a point system,” said Brian Hubic, draw master.

“Each team plays five sixend games and the three rinks with the most points are declared the winners.”

The overall first place winner was the Ernie Gazdewich rink of Canora.

Garden of Saskatchewan plaque presented to Norquay resident born in Canora

Granddaughter Karlee Griffith (who gathered information pretending it was a school assignment) presented the Garden of Saskatchewan plaque to Marlene (Jacquemart) Hamm of Norquay at the Norquay NICE centre The latest recipient of a Garden of Saskatchewan (GOS) plaque is Norquay resident Marlene (nee Heskin) (Jacquemart) Hamm, now married to Eldred Hamm.

“Marlene was completely surprised with the plaque presentation that was made at the NICE centre

in Norquay on December 22,” said Lynn Schweigert, nominator, on behalf of the Norquay Emmanuel Lutheran Church.

The inscription on the plaque reads: The Garden of Saskatchewan Citizen Ring Award in Recognition of Outstanding Contribution Honoring Marlene Ellen

Thank you for your years of public service in community groups and local government in your community - Service Leadership Contribution.

“We are so fortunate to have Marlene and her family in our area,” said Schweigert, in the nomination paper. “They (her family) walk in their mother’s footsteps in taking part and giving of themselves to this community.

“Marlene is still ‘full steam ahead.’ She doesn’t miss a beat, regardless of how much she has to attend to in her own personal life, she continues to be here for all of us.”

Karlee Griffith is Hamm’s granddaughter. In an effort to collect all the information Schweigert required to fill out nomination forms to be submitted to the GOS committee, Griffith told her grandmother that she was doing a school assignment and needed to ask a whole list of questions about Hamm’s past, her family

and her contribution to the community.

With all the information in hand, she passed it over to Schweigert who then submitted it to the GOS committee.

“Karlee was an invaluable help to me,” said Schweigert.

“I would never have been able to fill out the papers without her help, and I have to thank her for supplying so much information.”

Hamm was born in Canora to parents Alfred and Helen (Johnson) Heskin, and has four siblings, three sisters (one deceased) and a brother.

She attended Grantsburg country school, six miles northwest of Norquay, for the first two-and-a-half years of her education. The school burned down in 1953, so she took the remainder of her schooling in Norquay School.

Later, as a farmer’s wife (the late Jack Jacquemart), raising a family in the Norquay area, Hamm always found time to work on and

off the farm in numerous paid and volunteer positions.

As a volunteer, her long list of credentials include: a councillor at Nelson Lake Lutheran Bible camp, started the Sandy Beach Club, was instrumental in getting the Clayton RM to join the Library so people could borrow books for free, a Red Cross volunteer, was secretary and board member of Norquay local school board, Norquay Lutheran Sunday School teacher, Kinette Club treasurer and bulletin editor, Minor Hockey Association president, president and treasurer for the Norquay Legion auxiliary, secretary and board member of the Fort Pelly-Livingstone Home Care, Norquay Hospital auxiliary president, Norquay Horticultural Society secretary-treasurer, president of Norquay Lutheran Church women from 2000 to the present, treasurer of the Norquay Lutheran Church from 2007 to the present and Norquay NICE Senior Centre secretary from 2013

to the present.

Hamm still finds time to enjoy her family, grandchildren and hobbies of ceramics, crafts, curling, gardening, jigsaw and a variety of puzzles, playing the organ, reading, sewing, snowmobiling, travelling, woodworking and photography.

Each location has a different slogan, some of them official slogans, like the shirts found in Tisdale, or non-official slogans like “Naicam is where they make them” for the Town of Naicam.

The couple usually chooses the slogans based on researching the community and speaking to the residents.

Scott believes the success of the business comes from small town pride.

“Hometown pride runs deep in the smaller communities, for sure,” Scott said. “[Small town residents] like to support other small towns and other small businesses, so I think a lot of the success is because of that.”

The couple had to keep the results of the meeting a secret until the Dragon’s Den released the clip, which came out as a web exclusive pitch on February 20.

Little Town Apparel can be found in about 150 communities across the country from British Columbia to Nova Scotia.

“It was definitely a challenge to not talk too much about it, especially with our friends,” Scott said.

“But we just kind of went about things, business as usual. We have a pretty busy life, with three kids and everything else we have on the go. We lived life as we have been living up to that point.”

The money could not be

used until everything was finalized.

“We worked a little with Vincenzo. We’ve had some discussions. Now we’re ready to move toward what we said on the show, with more marketing efforts and using some of the funds to boost our brand a little and get our name out a little bit more.”

Scott doesn’t have an end goal at the moment for how far he wants the business to go.

“We’re just kind of trying to do the best job we can and go at a rate that’s manageable. Not too quickly.

We don’t really have a limit with how far. I guess we’ll see how things continue to go in Canada. Then maybe we expand beyond that if it comes to that.”

Right now he said the business is doing well.

“We’re launching into trade show season here where we often pick up a lot of our new accounts and we’re just coming off of a busy third quarter, so it’s in a good spot, for sure.”

March is Brain Health Awareness Month It’s the perfect time to revisit the brain health checklist and “add something new for your brain,” according to the release. SBIA and Saskatchewan Royal Purple Association (SRPA) are making plans in March to provide opportunities around the province to get involved for brain health.

“This started as a funding and support partnership, but both organizations have

come to realize it has become much more than that. It has come to include personal and group benefits for both organizations,” said Sandi Lougheed, the BrainLove SRPA organizer. “We are holding events that support learning, active living and socializing with interprovincial quilt retreats, golf tournaments and other events. We are reaching out to our communities, brain injury survivors, their families and the general public.”

BrainLove is a partnership between the

two provincial organizations to encourage the public to make the health and safety of their brains a priority during Brain Health Awareness Month.

The two provincial organizations are teaming up with the BrainLove campaign not only to raise Brain Health awareness, but also funds for educational programs.

The funds raised by the BrainLove Campaign are used for brain injury education and prevention programs.

GERECHKA: Andrew J. Gerechka, age 65, beloved husband of Kathryn and loving father of David and Anna died February 7, 2019 in his Kalamazoo Michigan home. He was surrounded by his immediate family. Andrew will be remembered and cherished by them as well as his brother Roman, his extended family and many friends and business associates. Andrew was known to put his family before himself and was a friend to all who met him. Andrew’s life began north east of Mikado Saskatchewan on a farm with no running water and no electricity. He attended Verdant Valley, a one room school located one and one half miles from the farm. Like many other rural students of the time Andrew went to school on a bicycle in the summer and in a horse drawn caboose during the winter. In this one room school while playing Monopoly Andrew developed a business acumen that would manifest itself later in his life. When Saskatchewan education became more centralized he took a bus to Mikado School and then to Canora Composite High School from which he graduated in 1971. After realizing that his goal in life was a career in business Andrew pursued a Bachelor of Commerce degree. Through perseverance as a part-time student taking night classes while employed at potash mines he earned this bachelor degree at the University of Regina with high distinction. Later he earned a Master’s Degree from the University of Chicago. Andrew spent many years employed by Stryker an international company which produced medical devices. As Senior Manager for International Tax Strategy Andrew travelled the world. International travel produced a serendipitous effect in 1985. While on a summer vacation Andrew met his wife Kathyryn in Scotland. After he returned to Saskatchewan and she returned to Colorado they began long distant communication. Eventually Andrew travelled to Denver, Colorado were Kathryn had begun working as a geologist. During this visit Andrew proposed to her. Kathryn accepted. But, the planned wedding overcame many obstacles. Crossing the Canadian - American border with a packed car and a korovai, a sacred Ukrainian wedding bread baked by his mother, Andrew was asked by American officials the purpose of his visit. Andrew told them that he was going to get married to an American citizen and move to the US. These officials denied Andrew entrance into the USA. To overcome this problem Kathyryn came to Canada; they were married in a civil ceremony in Vancouver BC. The civil ceremony was followed by a wedding and reception in Detroit, Michigan in the summer of 1987. As Andrew applied his skills in business the couple lived in Chicago Illinois, St. Louis Missouri and finally in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Andrew’s favourite things included establishing his orchard on the shores of Lake Michigan near Traverse City. He enjoyed golfing, nature and sharing campfires with his family and friends. Andrew was predeceased by his parents John and Eugenia Gerechka. He is survived by the loves of his life Katheryn, his son David and his daughter Anna, brother Roman and his daughter Tricia. Memorial donations may be directed to any cancer research foundation in US or Canada.

PELECHATY, Ernest Victor born March 27, 1940 - February 23, 2019 aged 78 years.

Ernie was born to Joseph and Helen Pelechaty (nee Sliva) in Flin Flon, Manitoba. At the age of 12 months, the family moved to the Buchanan District, where they began to farm. In 1966, Ernie married Darlene Wionzek and later moved to Canora. Their marriage was blessed with 3 children Brent, Duane and Kimberly. During his lifetime, Ernie found employment at a mine in Thompson, Manitoba and then later closer to home at Home Hardware, Department of Highways, Ram Industries in Yorkton, Canora Civic Centre and finally Canora Composite School. In an effort to follow his children, Ernie became involved with Cubs and Scouts as a leader, Canora Minor Hockey actively being a coach or manager. He also was involved with Canora Minor Ball, being a coach and officiating. Ernie was also a proud Canora Volunteer Fireman, for over 25 years. Ernie and Darlene loved to travel. Often taking cruises to East and Western Caribbean islands, and travelling Mexico, Florida, Hawaii, Vancouver, Halifax. Ernie enjoyed playing cards with family and friends, especially Ukrainian Whist with his grandchildren. Card games would often go into the wee hours of the morning. During the spring, Ernie would often be seen heading out to find mushrooms in the country. He loved picking them and always enjoyed coming home with a pail full to share with Darlene and the family. During warm summer days, fishing with Darlene and the grandkids was also on the priority list. As there was always a competition as to who caught the biggest fish at the end. After Ernie retired, he took up golfing, in an effort to spend more time with his busy grandchildren. Ernie enjoyed following his grandchildren either with hockey, school events or various other activities. He was always their biggest fan. Gido/Grandpa was a man of few words, but he often spoke through his heart. He was a very gentle and caring person. Ernie will be missed and lovingly remembered, by his wife of 52 years, Darlene; son Brent (Carla) and their children Branden and Bryce, son Duane (Kandis) and their children; Jade, Jordyn and Shae, daughter Kim (Jamie) Walker, sister Loraine Leddy, brother Frank (Grace) as well as numerous nieces, nephews and extended family. Ernie is predeceased by his parents Joseph and Helen, parents-in-law Stanley and Nellie Wionzek, sister Albina Toffan, and brothers-in-law Jay Leddy and Eddie Toffan. Mass of Christian Burial took place Friday, March 1, 2019 from St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church - Canora, SK, with Father Franklin Emereuwa officiating. SAPACH, Eugene - Eugene Sapach, beloved husband of Adella Sapach of Norquay, SK, passed away at the Royal University Hospital, Saskatoon, SK, on February 20, 2019, at the age of 72 years.

Eugene William Sapach was born on March 12, 1946 in the Arabella District, SK. He was the only surviving child born to Walter and Anne (Kowch) Sapach. He was raised on the farm where he diligently helped to do chores and work the land while attending school in Norquay, where he later graduated. After graduation, he continued to live at home and drove school bus for the Sturgis School Unit. In 1968, Eugene began working at the Alwinsal Potash Mine by Lanigan, SK. That fall, on August 15, returned home for a family wedding in Norquay. There, the stars aligned, and he met and fell in love with his future wife, Adella Balysky. On August 22, 1970, they were married in Danbury, SK. They built and continued their life together in Esk, SK, where Eugene pursued work at the potash mine. In July 1971, they welcomed their first child, Gene Brian.

A year later, they were blessed with a second son, Daniel Mark.

Eugene continued to work at the potash mine until the opportunity to continue the family farm operations in Arabella arose in the 1970s. Eugene was a farmer at heart; a true country man.

He would often share that one of his most favourite things was the smell of freshly cultivated soil in the spring. So, when the opportunity arose, he moved his family back home. In 1985, they welcomed their only daughter, Amanda Adele, and the following year their fourth child, Nathan Patrick. Eugene continued his love for farming, pursuing employment with farmers in the Norquay and Canora areas. After 17 years of employment with Hudye Farms, Eugene retired in 2011. However, as the saying goes, when you retire, you never really do stop working, and so Eugene was able to continue his passion while helping on his daughter and son-in-law’s family farm. In his younger years, Eugene enjoyed auction sales. The spirit of friendship, comradery and community he felt with those around him and his knack for finding a good deal drew him back time and time again. However, if there was one thing Eugene loved more than farming and auction sales, it was garlic. Anyone who knew him, was amazed at the amount of garlic he could eat. It was often a long running joke that garlic was the reason Eugene was able to enjoy life on Earth for as long as he did. If Eugene wasn’t attending auction sales, bargain hunting or fixing something, he would be found watching his favourite sports - baseball, hockey (which he loved talking about the old-time hockey, saying it was a “gentleman’s game”), curling and football, particularly the CFL. Eugene was not one to look for the spotlight or seek to be centre of attention.

He enjoyed visits with friends and family, especially when gathered around the kitchen table. He was proud of each of his children, and through the years with them, he instilled a deep Ukrainian tradition and steadfast Catholic faith. He wanted his children to be prepared for life ahead and embraced any opportunity he had to teach them things he felt were important in this life and helped them fuel their own independence. It’s the memories he left them with that will continue to bring a smile to the faces of his loved ones, just as he smiles down on them now. He will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.

May he rest in peace and his memory be eternal. Eugene was predeceased by his parents, Walter and Anne; and one sister, Victoria, in infancy. He will be forever missed by his wife, Adella; children: Gene (Danielle), Daniel (Tracy), Amanda (John) Zbitniff and Nathan (Michelle); grandchildren: Emily, Morgan, Matthew, Jordan, Victoria and Abigail; great-grandchild, Alekzander; and his sisters, Linda and Loretta; as well as extended family members and many friends. A Prayer Service was held at 7:00 p.m., Thursday, February 28, 2019, from the Chapel of Leson’s Funeral Home, and Funeral Liturgy was celebrated at 10:00 a.m., Friday, March 1, 2019, from Sts. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church, Canora, SK, with Very Rev. Fr. Joakim Rac, as Celebrant. Rite of Committal followed in the Canora Cemetery.

Those wishing to make expressions of sympathy may make donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Saskatchewan, as tokens of remembrance, in memory of Eugene Sapach.

Ole being the kindhearted person that he is, was really touched. He posted a copy of the letter on the staff bulletin board at the main post office where he worked.

The letter touched all the letter carriers and sorting staff at the post office, and they started a fundraiser between themselves. They were able to raise $95 and putting it in a pre-stamped official Canadian Postal Service envelope, the cash was delivered to the old widow. For the rest of the day they all felt a warm glow thinking of the nice thing they had done for an old lonely widow.

A week later another letter addressed to God in the same shaky cursive handwriting landed on Ole’s desk. Many of the postal workers were gathered around Ole when he opened the letter. It read: “Dear God, how can I ever thank you for hearing my prayers and sending me the money. Because of your generosity I was able to have my friends come over for a nice birthday lunch. We had a very enjoyable lunch and I told my friends about your wonderful gift. In fact, we are still talking about it and even Reverend Sven our Lutheran pastor is beside himself with joy over such a miracle. By the way $5 was missing.

I think the greedy, thieving hoodlums at Revenue Canada must have taken it. Signed Lena.”

Bob grabbed his shovel and started clearing his drivew ay and the side walks. Sven could hear

him singing and whistling while he worked.

Obviously he was enjoying the exercise. Bob finally had all the snow cleared away when the snow plow came and blew in the sidewalks and half his driveway. Bob just smiled, shook his head, still singing and cleared the snow away again.

It snowed every day for a week, and the snow clearing became back breaking. Bob was getting frustrated with all the hard work of snow clearing, so he went to the hardware

Bob on the other hand, h a d n o e x t r a w a t e r, n o wood burning stove, no candles or oil lamps, and no power for his electric blanket. Bob and his wife put all the covers and blankets they could find on the bed and snuggled together to stay warm. The watermain was repaired, and the power was restored the next day.

Then it snowed two

feet, which had to be cleared again. Sven told Bob that he ought to clear the snow off his roof, because if they got more snow his roof might collapse. Bob laughed at Sven and told him to stop pulling his leg.

That night it snowed again, and as Bob was clearing his sidewalk in the morning, the roof of his house caved in. Bob and his wife packed their suitcases, called in the movers, listed the house for sale and moved back to Florida.
