Hard Fought I started the final day of the 2016 Transylvania Epic with a slim lead, but I was determined to win the overall again. It was within my grasp, but this race across 174 miles of the rockiest terrain on the East Coast leaves a lot to chance. The week had been a struggle. I battled hard to gain the leader’s jersey on Day 1, and then lost miles to a wrong turn and had to fight to get back to the front on Day 2. On Day 4, I crushed my rear rim and had to stop repeatedly to fix my tire in the pouring rain. The last day began with more rain and only a minute to second place. I forgot about everything else and pushed hard. My whole body ached, and the more my legs complained, the harder I worked. Two miles before the last aid I slipped on a wet offcamber rock. I thought I could bounce up and keep on, but the crash was worse than it should have been. I walked toward the last aid station and the rest of the field went by me in the rain. I heard myself cheer them on. Forever and Ever Flecks of glittering golden dust fly off of Campbell’s rear wheel as she rounds the switchback in front of me. In the fading light, we wind our way down the narrow swath of trail toward the deepening blue of the lake below. A sun-soaked scent of mountain sage still warms the air, but there’s a chill beneath it now: our breath becomes a little deeper, and the tips of our fingers start to tingle with cold. June in the high Sierras takes us out of our daily routine. We trade in a workweek for the relaxed rhythm of blue skies and pedal strokes, turns linked over rock-strewn mountain meadows, shale rocks clanking melodiously under our wheels as we drop from a pass, long days with nothing to do except ride and explore, and evenings spent relishing laughter and stories over cold beers and a warm fire.
