Tourists

Return

Canungra’s cafes and retail stores are benefitting from an influx of tourists, however Canungra Chamber of Commerce President Monique Morcus says it will be a long road to economic recovery for the township. “Local businesses have been under pressure since the September 2019 bushfires,” said Monique. “While it is great to see the town busy, it is going to take a long term sustainable increase before businesses recover from almost nine months of difficult trading conditions,” she said. American couple Victor and Anna Danau visited Mountview Alpaca Farm on Friday 29th May with their baby Dexter. The family had been staying at Surfers Paradise for work and had to stay after international borders closed. “We have been in Australia since March,” said Anna. “Originally we had hoped to get home before the borders closed but we got stuck. We are making the most of it now and enjoy seeing areas close to the Gold Coast.” Victor said as long as their visas are approved they are not worried about extending their stay in Australia. “With international travel difficult at the moment, we don’t anticipate having problems with the visas,” he said, “We will go home as soon as we can but we don’t really have control over what is happening at the moment.” Mitchell Sales and Anna Canton travelled to Canungra from the Gold Coast for the day and said they were happy to be able to explore places close to home.

Rosaline Vuthapanich and Vivian Yang enjoyed their day at Mountview Alpaca Farm and said they had wanted to come out a few weeks ago but the Farm was closed. Jen Pack of Mountview Alpaca Farm said they closed for several weeks but had reopened with increased hygiene practices in place and an emphasis on social distancing. “The property is quite large so there isn’t really a problem with people being able to maintain social distance,” said Jen. “We have seen a gradual increase in visitors since we reopened.” Cr Virginia West said Scenic Rim Regional Council has supported the Visit Canungra

tourism campaign by providing funding for radio advertising and brochure distribution to bring visitors back to the Scenic Rim. “It hurts us all to have witnessed the decline in visitor numbers since September last year firstly as a result of the devastating bushfires, and now more recently from the COVID-19 restrictions,” said Virginia. “We know this has had a huge impact on our local businesses. With restrictions starting to ease again, we hope this campaign will help bring visitors back to enjoy the character and beauty of Canungra and its surrounds.”

Author

New release novel, Breaking the Mask is the culmination of almost a decade of work for local author Anthony Johnson. Originally from England, Anthony moved to Australia in 2016. He is a Project Manager for a building company and, like his father and grandfather, has been a builder since he finished school. At the age of 25, he went to university part time to study English Literature. “Writing is my passion,” said Anthony, “It is what I’ve done all my life.” Anthony spent eight years researching and three and a half years writing Breaking the Mask. He has also written two other novels and several short stories. Breaking the Mask is the first novel he has published. “I wasn’t entirely happy with the other novels, but with Breaking the Mask, I just knew it was right,” said Anthony. The historical fantasy follows Henry Game’s journey from the United Kingdom during the 1500s through to modern day New York. Henry has decided that his time is at an end. He uses his last days to gather his journals and accounts together. His focus is finally clear, death has given him the impetus required to face his greatest

memories that he offers, it is surely better than nothing. Yet what he creates is not just a recounting of secret history, it is also an honest explanation, a confession, of his darkest deeds and gravest sins; it is a parable that he hopes his own flesh and blood can learn from and hopefully not repeat the same mistakes. The entries range from early sixteenth century to the present day; from setting the dinner table for evening meal on Good Friday 1532, to sailing across the Atlantic Ocean in 1814, onward to the war with the USA; from scaling the tower of Pope Clement VII, to eating gingerbread in the company of three extremely bizarre sisters and a very greedy young Germanic girl named Gretel. While the character of Henry Game is fiction, the events Henry encounters are historical. Anthony’s research unearthed some little known historical facts which create an intricate web for readers to follow. Breaking the Mask is available online now from amazon.com.au and available soon from the bookdepository.com and booktopia.com.au.

New Retreat A Boost For Tourism

Hazelwood Estate, a 75-acre polo and Wagyu beef property at Beechmont, will transform into a retreat comprising luxury cabin and glamping accommodation, modern conference facilities, a day spa and a wealth of experiences from its Wagyu Cellar Door to farm-gate workshops. Tourism Development Minister Kate Jones announced the State Government will help fund the project, with Hazelwood Estate receiving $1.8 million through the Attracting Tourism Fund. Hazelwood Estate is expected to be open early 2021 and is tipped to attract an extra 18,000 tourists annually. Hazelwood Estate Managing Director Claire Burman said she is excited to work with the Hazelwood team to bring this unique tourism product to the Scenic Rim. “Hazelwood will showcase the best regional Queensland has to offer, all in one place, while being so close to the major tourism gateways of Brisbane and the Gold Coast,” said Claire. “We are delighted that Hazelwood Estate will be able provide luxury accommodation to support visitation of Lamington National Park, especially while the Beechmont

and Binna Burra communities recover and rebuild after the bushfires. “We look forward to working alongside our neighbours at Binna Burra Lodge to complement our offerings and attract more visitors to the spectacular Scenic Rim.” Minister for State Development, Tourism and Innovation Kate Jones said Hazelwood was a project like no other.

What

Terry Legg

We

Terry Legg has lived in Canungra for a few years now. He often helps out at the Canungra Show and Rodeo with his wife Maureen and daughter Debbie. Terry is quietly spoken, always very kind and willing to help with anything. He and Maureen are unofficial grandparents to many of the families in the street they live in, and Terry spends much of his time as a Chaplain with Life Saving Australia. So what did Terry do during lockdown? Well, he made a replica of a lute from around 1500AD. With the Chaplaincy duties restricted Terry said he was just sitting around and had the local camphor laurel timber sitting in the shed so he thought, why not? This was not the first lute Terry has made, but he doesn’t really have the right tools to make them, so he has to improvise a little. “Each piece of timber was cut, bent, and shaped on the back verandah using the railing as a bench,” said Terry, “I haven’t got exactly the right tools, so shaved the neck with an angle grinder.” His family are pretty used to Terry’s woodworking talents - Terry said they went to dinner at Ginja Ninja one night and his daughter Debbie passed him her wooden

Lockdown for extra PPE and increased use of hand sanitizer. “My partner is a small business owner and has continued to work,” said Sarah, “We have two little girls (14 months and 28 months) so most of our days involve hanging out at home anyways. So the biggest issue for me has been the improvement of getting to do grocery shopping on my own.”

Sarah Thomson

Sarah Thomson works in health care, and says her work status did not change, except

Lorelei Consterdine owns Lori’s Lollies and has three children, including a son with chronic asthma, Jacob. This put him in a higher risk category with COVID-19. “We were in very strict isolation for 10 weeks,” said Lorelei, “We have absolutely loved home schooling and tried to keep routines similar to school. I even had a little walk to home schooling and an assembly on Fridays when we gave out awards and read out some school work.” “It’s been hardest on Amy as she is missing out on school captain duties (at Canungra State School).” “It’s been very tough on the business , staying closed has been hard but I’m looking forward to re opening soon.” Lorelei’s husband, Tom, worked at Canungra Auto Clinic throughout the lockdown,

but took precautions when he got home to protect his family. “When he got home he wiped everything down, but his clothing in the wash and showered before he saw the family,” said Lorelei. Lorelei’s mother arrived in Australia in January and was ‘trapped’ here. “We are very grateful for that,” said Lorelei, “It’s much safer here than England and she’s been a great help with schooling. It was so hard listening to family and friends back home and seeing the news.” Like many people, Lorelei said she was nervous about leaving the house when restrictions eased.

The Consterdine children enjoyed being home schooled.

Nikki Grim

Nikki and her husband both lost their jobs within a month of each other. “It has been very difficult to say the least,” said Nikki, “But we have had so much time with our children, that has been wonderful. We have been baking and cooking together.” “Hubby has been teaching them how to use tools, to build garden beds and a little obstacle course, with things we had laying around the yard.” “We are trying to stick to the positives in all of this.”

“People on the street were looking and laughing, which was great because it was just after everything had shut down and people really needed a laugh,” she said, “He’s a good guy, he likes to make people laugh.” “I’m a stay at home mum and the fact that I couldn’t go out was hard,” said Kira, “It’s good to have my daughter back at school.”

Conway Family

Kira and her husband Mark gave their neighbours a laugh during lockdown when Mark dressed up in a dinosaur suit to put the bins out. Kira posted the video on the popular ‘Bin Isolation Outing’ Facebook group. The Group began in Australia and has over a million members world wide. “Our daughter Maddison just turned four last year and we had a dinosaur themed party and bought the suit,” said Kira. “It was an inflatable suit that has a motor in it and blows up with air - not the most comfortable thing to wear! Has been sitting around. When we saw the bin isolation videos, Mark just had to do it.”

Making Memories at Canungra Hotel

For visitors and locals alike, the historic Canungra Hotel is a place to make special memories. Although COVID-19 restrictions have limited the Hotel to 20 diners at one time, Restaurant Manager Nikki Fitton said it is still the venue of choice for locals to celebrate special occasions. “So many people have special memories of the Canungra Hotel,” said Nikki, “My parents met here 55 years ago when Dad was doing his army training and it was where they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.” Monique Morcus said celebrating her 15th wedding anniversary at Canungra Hotel had special meaning as she and Karen MacAndrew were also married at the Hotel. James Gill said he was excited to celebrate his 20th birthday at ‘the pub’.

The Hotel has 45 minute sittings for lunch and dinner. “We are legally only allowed to have 20 guests in the Hotel at one time but it is great to see people out having dinner,” said Nikki. “We are looking forward to the Stage 2 and Stage 3 restrictions coming into place which will allow us to have more guests.” Nikki said it is important for guests to book in advance and to arrive on time. “Unfortunately when other people are waiting to dine, we can’t extend the time so it is important that people arrive on time and order their meals when they arrive.” “Our menu is available on our web site and you can also order online for takeaway and eat in meals,” she said. The Hotel site was originally occupied by a guesthouse named ‘Bellissima’, built by Romeo Lahey in 1916. The guesthouse was

operated by the Lahey firm until 1927, when it was taken over by David Lahey, who sold it to Bernard William Conaghan. Mr Conaghan renamed it the ‘Canungra Hotel’ and was granted a licence in 1928, making it the first licensed premises in Canungra. Unfortunately, the beautiful old wooden building was destroyed by fire on Friday 22nd January 1937. At that time the building was owned by Mr Shaw of Sydney, who rebuilt it in its present form. The new hotel bar was opened on Thursday 9th October 1937. The Canungra Hotel is open seven days a week for lunch, dinner and bottleshop sales. For bookings phone 5543 5233 or visit canungrahotel.com.au.

Council Services Reopen with Restrictions

Canungra Library reopened recently with a ‘click and collect’ service. Canungra Librarians, Rosemary and Jan, said they have been inundated by people taking up the ‘click and collect’ service. “It has been great to have so many people use this service,” said Rosemary, “They have obviously missed having the library open.” Library books can be ordered over the phone or via Council’s web site, people then phone the library to arrange a pick up time. The books are left in the room next to the library in bags, making the process contactless. Scenic Rim Regional Council reopened its Customer Service and Administration Centres on Monday 25th May, in line with the Queensland Government’s roadmap to easing COVID-19 restrictions. Sneeze guards and floor decals to indicate safe distancing were installed at Council’s Customer Service and Administration Centres at Boonah, Beaudesert and Tamborine Mountain and there are limits to the number of customers permitted in each service centre at one time. Scenic Rim Mayor Greg Christensen said Council had continued to provide essential

Government’s social distancing guidelines, there will be maximum number of five customers permitted in our Beaudesert Administration Centre at one time, two at Boonah Customer Service Centre and one at Tamborine Mountain Customer Service Centre,” he said.

Humans of Canungra By Keer Moriarty Photography by Katherine O’Brien Photography Paul Kraayvanger is one half of the team behind Canungra Hub Cafe. He and his wife, Shona, also previously owned Canungra Newsagent. Shona, said she was happy I was interviewing Paul because they were starting to call her the ‘Media Tart’ at work, whereas Paul always seems to avoid the spotlight. You’re originally from New Zealand, how did you come to move to Australia? I actually met Shona in Turkey. We were both travelling around Europe - separately and we bumped into each other in Turkey in a camping ground and had a few drinks that night. Then about a week later we bumped into each other in Dubrovnik. Which is really weird because you would never expect that.

Were there other people you met on that trip like that? No.

That was before mobile phones? Oh yeah, this was in the eighties. It was completely by chance. Then about two weeks later, we bumped into each other in Venice.

So you purely decided to move to Australia for Shona? Yes. Totally (laughs).

So, that’s the most romantic place in the world and you happen to bump into each other again? Yes, these meetings were not planned, we just literally bumped into each other. In Venice, I just walked into a pub there and she was there. We didn’t know we were travelling to the same places, nothing was planned. Totally random.

Page 10

I’m going to cry! That’s beautiful. That night in Venice we actually worked out that our paths wouldn’t cross again. So she was living in England and I was living there too. We met up again when we got back to England and decided to move to Australia. Had you been to Australia before? No.

That first time you met Shona, was it a case of as soon as you saw her you knew? Yeah, I think so. There was an immediate attraction there. What happened when you moved to Australia? We moved to Brisbane at the start of the recession. I couldn’t get work at first so we moved to Sydney and I got work straight away. We moved back to Brisbane and then here (Canungra). We had been looking for a business and close friends of ours bought the newsagent

on Tamborine Mountain. About a year later they told us Canungra Newsagent was for sale. I’d never heard of Canungra. We arranged to have a look at this newsagent. We drove into Canungra and by the time we got to the bottom of the hill both of us looked at each other and said “this is where we want to live”. We hadn’t looked at the business by then. We knew. That was 20 years ago, and we are still here.

History Survives Fires

Eight months after the September 2019 bushfires ripped through the heart of the historic Binna Burra Lodge, the ‘fire-proof’ safe with valuable Binna Burra records has been retrieved. About three-quarters of the contents of the archive safe survived. “The material is now safely stored indoors in plastic containers,” said Steve Noakes, Chairperson of Binna Burra Lodge. “With the assistance of the Queensland Department of Environment and Science, we are getting advice from archaeologists for advice on material conservation questions,” he said. In the meantime the remaining archives will be digitally copied for future safe-keeping. One of Australia’s longest-established nature-based resorts, Binna Burra Mountain Lodge was founded in 1933 by Arthur Groom and Romeo Lahey. They shared a vision to create a place where people could stay and experience the beauty of the Lamington National Park rainforest. Binna Burra was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 31st December 2002. The inclusion on the Heritage Register was reflective of Binna Burra’s importance in Queensland’s natural and cultural history. It is anticipated that Binna Burra Binna Burra Chairman Steve Noakes looks Lodge will reopen in the second half through the historical documents of 2020.

From My Window

with Keer Moriarty, Editor Still Printing...

It is difficult to explain the feeling I had with the news that 100 regional News Corp papers stopped printing in a restructure that sees these papers with online presence only. It is sad for communities who will lose their local newspaper. Years ago, the local paper was the backbone of a community. The people who owned the paper and the people who worked there were involved in their communities, they had their finger on the pulse and they knew the people in the towns. No doubt this is still true for local journalists - but how many of those jobs will be shed in the move to digital? What will the record keeping of townships look like? How can truth be disseminated without this grassroots vehicle of news? Because it is easy to see that a report about the refurbishment of the soccer club’s canteen or ‘what we did in the pandemic’ is real and true, but who will remember this when they are relegated to the archives of the internet? Where are the pictures to cut out and keep on the fridge? Or does none of that matter? The Canungra Times belongs to me, but really it belongs to the community and I’ll keep doing what I can to make sure that continues. In the words of George Bernard Shaw: “I am of the opinion that my life belongs to the whole community and as long as I live, it is my privilege to do for it whatever I can. I want to be thoroughly used up when I die, for the harder I work the more I live.”

Dear Editor, Is the Tamborine Mountain Scarecrow Festival still on? The answer is yes but in what format is still undecided. The Scarecrow trail is definitely on and the dates are 11th to 20th September. Advertisements in papers, web site and face book will be appearing in early June providing all the detail. We hope to have a special guest on the Mountain who may open the festival and then provide an activity for families on Saturday 12th September. The Lantern Parade and other activities are subject to the lifting of COVID-19 restrictions. We have set a date of 1st August for a decision. The talk of Scarecrow Town is who will be the winner this year? We can put smiles back on faces by putting scarecrows out on the trail and entering the competitions. We are sure that Scarecrow Senior Poetry will be on and children can take part in their Colouring In and Poetry competitions. Entry is free and Entry Forms will be at various locations around the Mountain and on our web site for those off the Mountain who are coming to engage. So, the message is: put huge coloured circles around the 11-20 September on your calendars, get your planning hats on for making a Scarecrow display or visiting the Mountain. If visiting, consider an overnight stay, enjoy our fabulous sunset and visit some of our attractions. The Committee is keen to have a festival in whatever format is possible because it brings the community together and that is what we will need by September. So, please plan on producing a scarecrow or visiting and staying on the Mountain and, if we can get the lantern parade and other activities up and running, we will do so. Regards, Nigel Waistell Scarecrow Coordinator, Tamborine Mountain Chamber of Commerce

D J Smith Park

This small park is a delightful green space in the middle of town which is both aesthetically pleasing and provides well maintained covered seating areas for park users. For some weeks, I have watched the current council works (new concrete slab, new roof structure) and was very congratulatory of Council being in front of the curve (pardon the pun) by providing more covered seating for a park that is well utilised at any time but more so now during COVID19. I think this increased use will continue well and truly into the future. I now understand that this structure will house the antique wooden cart which has been relocated from its existing home, with fencing surrounding the cart to be added to the new hut. I also understand that the cart’s old area is being viewed as possible future car park area development space. I am astonished that we would spend money relocating the cart instead of creating more badly needed covered seating facility or would contemplate using our limited existing park green space to increase car parking. I know that I am not Robinson Crusoe in shaking my head at this project. Seems to me that Council should be promoting use of the park by providing better/more facilities for park users, rather than better facility for an antique wooden cart that, whilst a nod to our past, was appropriately housed and on view for interested park visitors. If car parking increase is a significant driver for this project, I would suggest more and better signage directing the public to the council parking facility besides the School of Arts hall would help alleviate car parking pressure. Most visitors don’t know it exists. Generally, I applaud Council’s park initiatives, but this time I think it is a Fail. P Warton, Canungra

Coming Home ... Canungra ‘Hadn’t Changed’ By Josh Baker Emily Hill arrived back in Australia on 28th March, just before the mandatory two-week hotel quarantine deadline came in. She was picked up from the airport and completed quarantine in her parents’ caravan in Canungra. Emily first went to Canada with her parents a few years ago to visit her Aunty and Uncle in Calgary, Alberta. On a road trip, she discovered the little tourist town of Banff. Emily recalls falling in love with this little town and after a quick google search, it’s easy to see why. Located in the Banff National Park – just over an hour’s drive west of Calgary – the town is famous for the peaks of Mt. Rundle and Mt. Cascade that dominate its skyline as well as the incredible turquoise blue coloured water of Lake Louise. Fast forward to November of last year, and after receiving a two-year working holiday visa, Emily set back off for Banff. Unfortunately, her trip was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic and she has since returned home to Canungra. Initially, Emily planned to stay in Banff, however, upon learning that many of the

other Australians working and living in Banff were leaving and due to the uncertainty that surrounded staying, she decided it was best to return home as well. She noted that, whilst there were no recorded cases of COVID-19 in Banff, it had become a ghost town. There were no longer any tourists and many of those working in the town had left. To get back to Canungra, Emily travelled from Calgary to Vancouver and then on to Brisbane. The only abnormalities she noticed during her journey home were the amount of people wearing face masks and how quiet the usually bustling international airports had become. There was one incident where her plane was held on the tarmac in Vancouver as a passenger had been coughing regularly during the flight and they were not allowed to disembark until the individual was treated and cleared by paramedics. I suppose this highlights the precautions being taken during this pandemic, especially in terms of plane travel. Emily said it was a strange feeling returning home to find that, despite everything

going on globally, Canungra hadn’t really changed. Whilst she’s enjoying being back home, she can’t wait to get back to Banff!

$1,089,053 Boost For Scenic Rim Roads

The Scenic Rim Regional Council will receive a cash boost as part of the Federal Liberal National Government’s $1.8 billion cash injection for road and community projects through local governments across Australia. The significant investment will support local jobs and businesses in the Scenic Rim and boost our struggling economy as a result of drought, bushfire and the impacts of COVID-19. Federal Member for Wright and Assistant Minister for Road Safety and Freight Transport, Scott Buchholz said the package included the establishment of a new $500 million Local Road and Community Infrastructure Program and the bringing forward of $1.3 billion in Financial Assistance Grant payments. “We know that local governments are well positioned to quickly deliver projects that will benefit the Scenic Rim Region. “The new program we’re announcing, is based on the highly successful Roads to Recovery program, it will position Scenic Rim Regional Council to deliver priority projects with a focus on upgrades and maintenance to local roads and community infrastructure. “By making these investments in critical local road infrastructure, we’re supporting local jobs, local businesses and helping our economy in the Scenic Rim to be stronger on the other side of this pandemic,” Scott said. Local road projects to be delivered under the Program include but are not limited to constructing or improving bridges, street lighting, and heavy vehicle facilities such as rest areas.

A broad range of community infrastructure projects will be eligible including new or upgraded bicycle and walking paths, community facilities, and picnic shelters and barbeque facilities at parks. Mayor of Scenic Rim Regional Council, Greg Christensen welcomed the support package. “As a large region, the Scenic Rim has a backlog of infrastructure projects that would transform our community, however with limited revenue, it’s difficult for us to pursue on our own,” said Greg. “We are looking forward to reviewing the guidelines and looking at what projects we can accelerate that will contribute to immediate employment, community liveability and

well-being, while providing overall longterm sustainability for the region.” Mr Buchholz said last financial year, 2019-20 the Australian Government injected $3,304,642 into the Scenic Rim under the Financial Assistance Grant’s scheme alone. “We’ve been working with Council in response to the various disasters our community has confronted, from the cyclone, through the drought and in responding to the bushfires and now the coronavirus pandemic. “This is about supporting local jobs, local infrastructure and local businesses. “I will work closely with the Mayor and Councils to get projects get under way,” Mr Buchholz said.

Paul Davis from Chill It Mobile Mechanical

Mechanical Repairs at Home Chill It Mobile Mechanical is a new mobile service for vehicle and petrol powered gardening equipment repairs. Paul Davis is a qualified mechanic and fitter/machinist who has been repairing vehicles since he was 16 years old He is experienced in working on all makes and models of passenger cars through to large trucks and small engines such as gardening equipment. “The service is completely mobile and self-sufficient,” said Paul, “I even have a generator so I don’t need to utilise customer’s power.” Paul can service vehicles at customer’s homes or work sites and he also offers a free pick up and drop-off service for petrol powered gardening equipment and for those who prefer to have their vehicle repairs completed off-site. He can complete any mechanical repairs as well as log book servicing for all vehicles, pre-purchase inspections and a breakdown service. Paul has a mobile disc and drum machine which he says can extend the life of a vehicle’s brakes, saving customers money. “People get brakes and they generally think they get a set of pads and that’s it,” said Paul, “This can extend the life of the brakes and stop the squealing.” “It is a cheaper option than buying new brake pads and you can probably do three or four machines, which will save a lot of money over time.” Chill It Mobile Mechanical operates seven days a week. For enquiries and bookings contact Paul on 0419 177 029.

A free community library has been installed at the Canungra Village Garden. Steve Potter built and installed the library which was funded by the money raised at the children’s market held earlier this year. Mandy McArdle Potter said she had planned to hold a children’s food market during the Easter break to launch the library “Of course that has been put off for now but we still would love to plan it in the future!” said Mandy. “If you want to use the little free library, please take a book or leave a book! Please remember to take the precautions such as sanitising hands,” said Mandy. The Canungra Village Garden is located at the back of Canungra State School grounds and can be accessed via Lamington National Park Road, near the C&K Kindergarten.

Wildlife Alert

A Tropical Oasis

By Bren Dalby Sadly the dry weather has wallabies and kangaroos in particular on the move in search of water and therefore more coming to grief on the roads. Please drive more cautiously at dawn and dusk and if you happen to collide with one, and they can indeed come out of nowhere…and often in pairs btw, please, if safe to do so pull over with hazard lights on, check if they are clearly deceased, move off the road and look to see if they have a pouch and further, anything in that pouch. The easiest way to pouch check is to lift leg and look for testicles; you need look no further then! A pouch has quite a small entrance and is very deep; a small baby can be very deep in that pouch and attached to a nipple … do not remove from the nipple as this will damage the mouth irretrievably. Either pick up Mum and baby and get to a vet or Bren at 199 Lamington National Park Road, or call Bren on 0414 435 919 (poor reception at home), or 5543 5917 or Wildcare on 5527 2444. If the animal is hurt but not dead, or you are unsure or not confident to check, please note exactly where you are (if possible do a ‘marked location’ on your phone) and call the numbers above. These numbers can be called 24/7. Same applies to all wildlife of course; if any animal or bird is hurt and you are able to safely wrap up in a towel, t-shirt or similar to keep in the dark and feeling more secure, ring numbers above or take to a vet please. We as wildlife carers and rescuers would appreciate your help immensely. If anyone is interested in becoming more involved with our wildlife, check out Wildcare on www.wildcare.org.au

Tucked away in Mahony Road Wonglepong, Canungra Valley Tropicals is a hidden gem with a variety of ornamentals, edible plants and compost available for sale. Cass Roscarel is passionate about tropical plants and garden health. She and her husband ‘Rosco’ have created beautiful tropical gardens around their home and the nursery. Cass says she is happy to advise customers on plants for their garden to get the best combinations of colour, light and shade. Her knowledge is evident from the spectacular gardens surrounding their home. “We have a range of spectaclar ornamental plants, many of which make stunning cut blooms when they are in season,” said Cass. “We also have some hard to get edible Cass Roscarel with an arrangement of plants and fruit trees for sale.” tropical flowers. Cass recommends their cow compost for all gardens and ‘SuperSoil’ for people who really want to get the best out of their soil. SuperSoil is composted cow manure with Palagonite added. The cow manure is well composted and resembles garden soil more than cow manure. Cass says Palagonite is a volcanic rock containing all 22 nutrients considered essential for optimal plant growth. “It replaces depleted minerals and elements and not only improves soil for increased yields, it also serves as a natural insect deterrent, and traps odours. One application releases minerals throughout the season,” said Cass. “It turns our compost into super compost. It causes phenominal growth of micro-organisms and raises the moisture and nutrient storage capacity of the soil.” Cass and Rosco are offering a free 2kg bag of Palagonite for all customers who buy 10 bags of compost during the month of June. For enquiries and orders please message the Canungra Valley Tropicals’ Facebook page or text Cass on 0427 281 101.

School Happenings By Kylie Todhunter, Principal Photography by El Hogan This week brings us to the end of what has been three months of school like never before. As a community, we have been challenged to change our way of life and make difficult decisions for our own and our children’s safety and wellbeing. Thank you for your support and cooperation. As a staff, we have had to make massive changes to the way we do our work. I would like to thank and acknowledge the dedication, commitment and excellence in practice of all Canungra SS staff, teachers, aides, cleaners, admin and grounds. Monday brought the return of the majority of our students and it was magic to see their smiling faces and hear laughter filling the classrooms and the playground, as well as learning! We understand that students returning to school are coming with a range of home learning experiences and emotions. Our staff are preparing for that. The remainder of the term will have a focus on English, maths and well-being. Teachers and aides will be working with students to see where they are at with their learning in these key areas and addressing any gaps, slips or jumps with activities and groups.

A Baker’s Cyst is a fluid-filled cyst which causes a bulge and a feeling of tightness behind your knee. The pain can get worse when you fully flex or extend your knee or when you’re being active or after prolonged standing. A Baker’s Cyst, also called a popliteal cyst, is usually the result of either arthritis within your knee joint, or a cartilage or ligament tear. These conditions can cause your knee to produce too much fluid, which can then lead to the development of a Baker’s Cyst. In some cases, a Baker’s Cyst causes no pain, and you may not notice it but if you do have signs and symptoms, they might include: • Swelling behind your knee, and sometimes in your whole leg, • Knee pain, • Stiffness and inability to fully flex your knee. Your symptoms may be worse after you’ve been active or if you’ve been standing for a long time.

What is a Baker’s Cyst? These signs and symptoms closely resemble those of a blood clot in a vein in your leg. If you have swelling and redness of your calf, you’ll need a prompt medical evaluation to rule out a more serious cause of your symptoms.

Physiotherapy Management Your Physiotherapist will be able to help you a lot with the management of a burst Baker’s Cyst as it is about removing the fluid which spreads down into your calf and A lubricating fluid called synovial fluid helps your leg swing smoothly and reduces friction between the moving parts of your knee. If your Baker’s Cyst bursts the synovial fluid leaks into your calf, causing: • Sudden sharp pain in your knee, • Swelling in your calf, • Sometimes, redness of your calf or a feeling of water running down your calf.

can be very painful. Ultrasound Therapy combined with Laser Therapy will be the most beneficial interventions initially and then the primary cause of the development of this Cyst will need to be addressed. Therapeutic Massage is not appropriate at this early stage as the lymph vessels will need to be carefully stimulated to help with drainage. Therefore a special form of Lymphatic Drainage Massage will be more appropriate.

Nissan X-Trail ST-L Test & Review

Reviewed by Lee McKenzie-McKinnon, Editor, carandbikenews.com.au The current generation of Nissans are not considered to be the top of the list when looking for a new car. This however is not the case for the Nissan X-Trail as they are right up there with their competitors and worth a look and drive. The Nissan X-Trail ST-L is the second lowest level in the range and still offers plenty of comfort and quality driveability for the money. The X-Trail ST-L is available with only one engine, a 2.5-litre non-turbo petrol engine, producing 126kW and 226Nm. The ST-L is offered only with a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) and all-wheel drive can be had at a $2,000 premium. Nissan doesn’t make extreme claims when it comes to the numbers of fuel usage with the five-seat 2WD X-Trail rated to consume 7.9L/100km. There is a decent list of inclusions for the X-Trail ST-L with smart key entry, reversing camera, MP3 compatible sound system with an AM/FM radio, a CD player, Aux and USB inputs, Bluetooth connectivity for phone calls and audio streaming, and at least six speakers.

Nissan X-Trail ST-L

There is a touchscreen for controlling entertainment and other cabin functions, smartphone integration through NissanConnect, height and reach adjustment for the steering wheel, which carries buttons for operating the cruise control, the sound system and phone. Hill-start assist, Intelligent Ride Control, and Intelligent Trace Control – Nissan technologies that micro-adjust the engine and brakes automatically, with the aim of steadying the ride and helping steer into turns and autonomous emergency braking, six airbags and electronic stability control.

When driving the X-Trail it doesn’t come across as an exciting car to drive. It is perfectly suited to what it has been designed for but it just seems a little dull. The steering is on the lighter side for an SUV of its size. This is good when trying to get into tight parking spots but not the best when driving. Parking is also helped by the 360-degree parking suite which, once you get used to it, is great. Price: From $38,490. Contact your local Nissan dealer for details.

Canungra’s History The Party Line By Joyce Libke In 1911, the first telephone line to Canungra came from Beaudesert following the road across Tabragalba, Beaudesert Nerang Road. In 1925, at Wonglepong, a side line was put up joining the Daniels, Franklin, Caswell and Campbell family’s properties on the first “party line” connected to the exchange in Canungra. When the railway line opened in 1915 the phone line was rebuilt adjacent to that line for easy access for maintenance. After the success of that party line, Albert Curtis organised the farmers in the Canungra Valley south of Canungra to have their own party line. The homes were all connected by a single wire that was attached to the trees via a china insulator and the odd pole. On a wall in each house was a wooden box approximately 30cm x 50cm x 15cm with a ‘trumpet’ on the front to speak into, a small handle on one side to turn to ring and another smaller trumpet on a cord on the other side to listen with. These boxes allowed the families on the party line to speak to each other without Early telephones were similar to this British Ericsson model having to go through the switch board at the Post Office so no cost was incurred. Each party line had its own number and each phone on the line its own code. Grandma’s was 27K so when the ring came through as “long – short – long” she answered. Ours was 27D “long – short – short”. This line also enabled us to make a call with several households talking together. Mind you it was easy to listen in to any call at any time! If we wanted to talk to someone beyond our party line, we would have to ring the exchange at the Post Office and whoever was on the switch board would plug us through – and this cost. Albert Curtis, then his son, Ken, had the responsibility of maintaining the line, particularly south of Double Crossing Road. The equipment used to reconnect broken wires was a 1926 Chevrolet truck; a home-made hardwood ladder to stand on the back; and a pair of heavy duty pliers. The registered agreement, signed by the original phone owners on sixth day of March 1926, shows that they all agreed to equally share any costs incurred by Albert Curtis from the Post Master General [PMG] and for maintenance. This document is signed by David Day, Walter Hart, Bill Coote, Page Ball, Frank Adkins and R.Denning. There was a period in the 1950’s when a young man in the valley had long conservations every night with his girlfriend. If there was need to make an urgent call, we asked to use the line, he got off, the urgent call was made and he continued the call to his girlfriend.

Scenic Rim Regional Council - Comments Cr Jeff McConnell, Division 2 Councillor These are my own personal views. I do not purport to speak on behalf of Council.

New Developments

A new 24 hour service station has been proposed for the corner of Beaudesert-Beenleigh Road and Mundoolun Connection Road at Tamborine Village and signage has been erected around the property. You can check out the Development Application at DAP Online the Application number is MCU 19/027. Council must receive any submissions by 11th June 2020. I am hoping to get a detailed list of all major Development Applications for Division 2 early next month and will post them to my Facebook page.

Budget

We start Budget deliberations next week and it looks to be an interesting process. Given the hardship that the Scenic Rim has suffered in the last three years with severe flooding, drought, bushfires and to still be drought declared going into this years dry winter months, and now to top it off, we have the debilitating effects of the extended severe lockdown measures enforced on us by the State Government for the COVID-19 virus which has severely impacted our small business and tourism industry. The next budget will need to be sensitive to the impact of the last three years and the COVID-19 virus that the Scenic Rim community has had to endure. Residents, farmers and businesses are hurting and I am hearing the pain that is in the community. You can be rest assured that I will not blindly follow the recommendations that come from Council.

Community And Sporting Groups

I am hearing from a lot of Community and Sporting groups that are hurting financially during this lockdown where income has dried up however the expenses for maintaining facilities or grounds has not. I have seen no assistance coming from State Government to support these vital community groups who only run with the dedication of hard working volunteers. I have contacted our local member Jon Krause and he is approaching the State Government with my concerns. If your Group /Club is in need of assistance please contact Council and let us know of your situation so that we can assist or help you get assistance.

Maintenance Matters

At Beechmont the aged Camphor Laurel tree on Beechmont Road opposite the Old School Site has been inspected by an independent arborist and deemed unsafe so is scheduled for removal in the coming weeks. There is scope to replace this tree with a native species if the community would like. Roadworks on Beechmont Road are progressing well and I thank the residents who travel that road regularly for your patience during this project. In Canungra, the aged barbecue in Lions Park is to be replaced with a modern electric version. In D J Smith Park the wagon has now been housed under a new shelter on the opposite side of the park allowing space for a possible revamp of the parking area outside the toilet block in future years. An underground electrical upgrade has also been completed in this park.

Rubbish Issues

With the COVID-19 restrictions gradually being lifted, and the influx of visitors to our town, the rubbish bins in D J Smith Park are now being emptied daily over the weekends to manage the extraordinary amount of waste. This situation is being reviewed as the restrictions slowly lift. The replacement bin outside Australia Post has been installed to the delight of the staff working there.

Moriarty Park AGM

Congratulations to the newly elected executive following a socially distanced AGM last week. Bren does such an amazing job as President and has been re-elected to this position. She has a very strong and motivated executive - Peter, Toby, Sarah and Vicki and they welcome new members to their monthly meetings. The recent Council Community Grants have delivered funding for an upgraded water bubbler, as well as new equipment and appliances for the newly renovated canteen. Congratulations to Canungra Owls Soccer Club who have organised this project with two successful grant applications.

Library & Customer Services

The Canungra Library has now opened for Click and Collect services each day from 10am to 1pm and 2pm to 3pm. Books can be ordered on line or, if you are unable to use this method of ordering, simply phone 5543 5791 and the helpful staff will sort some books for you to collect. Once you’ve ordered, you will need to call the library to arrange a time to collect your books. Council’s Customer Service Centres will reopen from Monday 25th May, however in line with Queensland Government social distancing guidelines, only a limited number of customers will be allowed inside at one time. Council’s website has more information and you can still call 07 5540 5111 for enquiries between 8.30am and 4.30pm each weekday. Canungra RSL Sub-Branch News By Col Lee, President, Canungra RSL Sub Branch

Sub-Branch Building

The current situation is that the building is up for lease. Two parties are interested, and the Sub-Branch Committee are working through both options. Despite best intentions, the Sub-Branch Committee really envisage any ‘doors being opened’ until August 2020 at the earliest. Upgrading of the kitchen and bar, and food licenses all must be granted, along with building insurance, public liabilities and many other regulatory compliance issues that must be addressed.

Annual General Meeting

Our delayed AGM is still awaiting the ‘green light’ from Queensland State Government ‘Lock-Down’ Laws. By implementing the Government’s 3 stage approach, then our earliest date for the AGM will be on Saturday, 11th July 2020 commencing 11am. The Sub-Branch Secretary will shortly be sending out more information to Canungra RSL Sub-Branch members along with a Newsletter to bring all members up to date on the future of the Branch and the possible composition of the Sub-Branch Committee. There will be several vacancies and for those members who would like to get involved, this will be a great opportunity to do so.

By Shirlene Pott, Lions Club of Tamborine Village An animal memorial plaque has been installed the Tamborine Memorial Hall grounds beside the community cenotaph. This plaque is to honor the animals that lost their lives serving in wars. The plaque was donated by former Division 2 Councillor, Nadia O’ Carroll and the head headstone for the animal cenotaph was jointly funded by Nadia and Tamborine Village Lions Club. These donations were funded by Nadia personally, not through Scenic Rim Regional Council. The Lions would like to thank Nadia for her generosity and her endless efforts to support the Lions Club during her service as Division 2 Councillor. We would also like to acknowledge her help in the kitchen every year at our Community Christmas Carols and Twilight Markets. We very much appreciate your services at this event. Tamborine Village Lions markets and fundraising activities will resume as per government directives.

Veterans Day

Vietnam and Veterans Day (once known as Vietnam Veterans Day) is planned for Saturday 15th August 2020 commencing 10.30am. This year’s event is to be named, Canungra Veterans Day. Since the Vietnam War, there have been many conflicts that Australian Defence Force have served and continue to serve in defence of our nation and its interests. However, these post-Vietnam operations/deployments have yet to be officially commemorated and those who served and sacrificed their lives for Australia should also be honoured. Here in Canungra, we lead the RSL movement with our approach to our newest Veterans, whether they are members of the Sub-Branch or not. Hopefully, we will also see those younger Veterans on course or posted to Kokoda Barracks at our gathering this year. Remember, the best friend that COVID-19 has is COMPLACENCY.

There has been an overwhelming reaction from the tourism industry and small businesses across the Scenic Rim about the Queensland border closure. Make no mistake – I want us all to stay healthy. That’s why I fought the Government’s proposal to make Kooralbyn a pandemic isolation centre, so as to keep our Scenic Rim as free as possible from COVID-19. Queenslanders have made huge sacrifices to suppress coronavirus. Now, we must begin to re-open the economy. I have written to the Premier suggesting that regional Queensland areas, where there have been no COVID-19 cases, would be an absolute no-brainer for a broader re-opening of the economy. So far, there is no sign that this idea will be adopted by the Government. We cannot keep the borders closed forever, and the longer they remain shut, the more our economy (already struggling before COVID-19) will continue to remain one of the lowest in Australia. This is another reason why we need the Labor Government to deliver their budget – we are the only state where this is not happening, and I have no doubt the only reason is because we have an election on 31st October. If there is anything I can do to assist you, please call, email or send me an SMS 0401 634 488.

Federal Member for Wright, Scott Buchholz and State Member for Scenic Rim, Jon Krause have thanked volunteers across the Scenic Rim this National Volunteers Week and opened nominations for the 2020 Wright Community Contribution Awards. Mr Buchholz said volunteers were invaluable to the community and without them, many of the local sporting and community clubs, as well as support services, simply would not exist. “It is vital that we acknowledge the importance of and thank volunteers in our community. “They are hardworking, dedicated to their community and tireless in their efforts to improve the lives of local people and the area. “Our volunteers are people not motivated by accolade or acknowledgement, certainly not motivated by money; but they do it for the greater good of their local community and to make the Scenic Rim a better place to live, work and play,” Mr Buchholz said. State Member for Scenic Rim, Jon Krause, said the entire community recognised that volunteers were critical to the Scenic Rim, especially during tough times like the coronavirus pandemic and recent bushfires. “In these tough times of drought, and as we continue to deal with the impacts of bushfires in our region, and now with the current health pandemic, our volunteers keep going, keep caring, and keep contributing to our communities. “We have so many hardworking volunteers in the Scenic Rim that give tirelessly to ensure that others in our communities are cared for – it’s important that we acknowledge their selfless contributions.” Mr Buchholz said that the Coronavirus was having an impact on the ability to recruit volunteers and to participate in face-to-face activity, but many were pushing on in a COVIDSafe manner. “Our volunteers are resilient, they will get through this and they will ensure our community gets to the other side of this pandemic. “I urge all residents, all community leaders to visit scottbuchholz.com.au/ wright-community-awards/ or to contact my office for a nomination form, and nominate a volunteer or someone for the contribution they’re making to the Scenic Rim community. “I look forward to receiving many nominations and hopefully catching up with those award recipients later in the year,” Mr Buchholz said. Nationally, volunteering has an estimated annual economic and social contribution of $290 billion. Nominations for the Wright Community Contribution Awards close on 31st August 2020.

Australia’s bird life is some of the most unique and beautiful in the world. One group that stands out is the Honeyeaters. With at least 50 species identified in Australia, it is inevitable that birdwatchers will see several species easily in just one morning of casual bird watching. One honeyeater species, which occurs in South-east Queensland, is the Yellow-faced Honeyeater. This species can be readily identified by its all grey body and distinctive yellow line, which runs from the base of the birds’ bill along under the eye. Similar species to the Yellow-faced Honeyeater in South-east Queensland is the Brown Honeyeater. However, the Brown Honeyeater is smaller in size without the yellow line under the eye. There are three races of Yellow-faced Honeyeater in Australia. One is found in North Queensland and the other two occur in the southern states such as New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia. Throughout their range, Yellow-faced Honeyeater are common birds. This species inhabits a variety of habitats including mountain forests, dry woodlands, coast scrubs, gardens and heath. Yellow-faced Honeyeater are partially migratory throughout their range and can often be heard moving in small groups of a wintertime in South-east Queensland. These birds can be very active when feeding on blossom and can be seen foraging in different strata of the forest canopy. Possibly the best way to get decent views of this bird species is to find a place where they are coming into drink with other birds. Although Yellow-faced Honeyeaters are a common species, they can certainly test individuals who are new to bird watching due to them fitting into the category of a ‘little brown job’. For me the easiest way to identify Yellow-faced Honeyeaters are by their call when I first encountered them. Now, they are bird species that I regularly encounter and I usually always hear them before I see them!

Emperor Moth By Susan Cully These beautiful caterpillars were found on the pavement beneath a Flindersia Australis tree on a very windy day. These caterpillars are black with brilliant green stripes along and across the body. There is a red tubercle tipped with white spines at every junction of the transverse and longitudinal green stripes. The caterpillars have been found feeding on a variety of Australian native trees, including: Banana Bush (Tabernaemontana Pandacaqui), Butterwood (Callicoma Serratifolia,), Red Ash (Alphitonia Excelsa,), Crows Ash (Flindersia Moth photo: Australian Museum. Thank you to Butterfly Australis). The caterpillars House: lepidoptera.butterflyhouse.com.au/satu/astrophela grow to a length of about six centimetres. These creatures turned out to be the larvae of Emperor Moths, typically identified by prominent eyespots on the wings and a very ‘furry’ appearance due to a generous covering of long hair-like scales. The males are a strong yellow colour and the females are much darker and greyer, this differentiation confused early taxonomists who thought the marked inequality indicated a separate species. They have a wingspan of about eight centimetres. This genus, Opodiphthera, falls within the Saturniidae family. The Emperor Gum and the Hercules moths are world famous, being very large. Individual species within this family contain specimens with a wingspan of up to 30 cm. It is worth visiting the following website to view spectacular pictures: australianbutterflies.com/monster-moths-the-3-biggest-moths-in-the-world/. These species are found in the eastern quarter of Australia, Papua New Guinea and SE Asia. The caterpillars pupate in a pale tough oval, silk cocoon. The cocoon is usually spun on plants growing below the food tree, and held by silk threads. The cocoon itself has a length of about two centimetres. Although these Saturnid moths are often called silk moths, they don’t produce commercial silk. They do however produce an interesting ‘wild silk’.

News from St Luke’s By Di Ayscough The changes we are experiencing due to COVID 19 continue! I hope you have adjusted to the many changes and you can honestly say, there are some good things that have happened in our lives. A few of the good things include: families doing more together, people growing their own veggies, doing more cooking, playing board games, realising there are a lot of things we thought were essential in life and realising they are not really important. There are many more things I could list and which I am sure you could think of. On the other hand, there have been many disappointments and sadness, including loss of jobs and loss of physical communication such as a simple handshake or hug. Of course, the huge loss of life around the world has been unbelievable. The people of St. Luke’s have missed contact with each other, and not hearing the church bell on Sundays. We are adjusting to the changes and coming out the other side. There does seem to be a faint glimmer of hope and light. We are now allowed small gatherings of 10 at a modified church service. This is happening every second Sunday at St. Luke’s, and the alternate Sunday at St Georges on the mountain. We have had to reserve our seat at St Luke’s to ensure we keep within the limits of 10 people. Who would ever have thought it would be necessary to reserve a seat at church? Wouldn’t it be wonderful if once everything returns to normal, due to expanding numbers, we had to reserve a seat? I hope you might think about coming to St. Luke’s in the future to say thank you to God for getting us through this time. Despite the limitations, Fr Ken has been presenting his Sunday service via YouTube. We are extremely grateful to Mark Conway for filming the services, so we can watch and hear them.

NOTIFICATION OF HAZARD REDUCTION BURNS CANUNGRA FIELD TRAINING AREA Fireland Consultancy, on behalf of the Department of Defence, will be conducting hazard reduction burns in the Canungra Field Training Area. The burns will be undertaken in a number of areas across the training area. Weather permitting and subject to suitable conditions, hazard reduction burns will be conducted in accordance with current Queensland Government ‘Planned Burn Guidelines’. It is anticipated the burns will be undertaken between April to October 2020. Fire trails are maintained in the training area by Defence to protect adjoining properties and to allow the burn to be undertaken safely. In case of airborne embers, it is recommended that neighbouring property owners backing directly onto the Canungra Training Area ensure that gutters and roofs are clear of branches and leaves, and any large build-up of combustible materials are removed from yards. The hazard reduction burns are likely to create a short term smoke nuisance, and Defence apologises for any inconvenience this may cause. Any inquiries may be addressed to the Spotless Project Manager Martine Parker on 0429 628 921. Alternatively, Fireland Consultancy can be contacted on 0447 431 727 or register for specific notification through www.fireland.com.au Smoke Notification. Canungra Owls Soccer and Moriarty Park News By Bren Dalby Well things are at last starting to return to some semblance of ‘normality’, whatever that is now! I know everyone will be a little more cautious these days but it will be great to be back doing some of the things we love. Soccer training looks to resume in June and Cam is working with coaches re training times as there are of course certain requirements we are not accustomed to and limited numbers allowed. We are, for a change, at an advantage at the moment being a smaller club as we can most likely accommodate these restrictions where the large coastal clubs are struggling. Please be patient and indeed accommodating with all codes as we are working to do the absolute best we can. Coaches will be contacting players but keep an eye on facebook page for regular updates when we get them. During the season closure the committee continued working on various projects, including the new canteen facilities. Thanks to Jodie Clifford for all her efforts in securing the grants to make this possible. Also a big shout out to the tradies that bought this project together: RJS Kitchens and Joinery, Signature Installations, Adept Plumbing And Gas, SKS Electrical and Steeline Garage Doors. Social tennis is up and running again on a Tuesday at 5pm; $2 a player. We have been

kind enough to not close the courts during this crisis but are disappointed few people are paying … have let this go also but soon we will have our book - a - court system up and running so I hope you have all got the tennis bug and continue to play! Roshfit have a bootcamp on Monday nights at 5.30pm; bookings essential – call Roshni on 0421 862 892. Tae Kwon Do will recommence from 15/6; Monday and Thursday evenings from 5.30 – contact Sarah on 0431 089 738; you may have to leave a message. We are, due to public demand, aiming at 19th June for a Trivia Night! From 6pm; $5 per person, maximum of six at a table and

well spaced out so bookings are essential. Call Bren on 0414 435 919 or 07 5543 5917 or bren.dalby@bigpond.com. This will be dependent on COVID-19 regulations at the time. We held a Moriarty Park Community Sporting Centre, socially distanced (I am sensationally loud!) AGM in May, so just a little late. We have the biggest committee ever which is tremendous. All are welcome to attend our monthly meetings on the third Monday of the month at 7pm. Best to check with Bren in current climate before turning up, if not on text list already. Stay safe everyone and look forward to seeing you all again!

Bowlers getting social distancing right before having a roll up. L to R: Dave Coleman, Peter Shoebridge, Franz Kaimier, Paul Johnston, Kevin Ray and Ron Kirkright.

CANUNGRA BOWLS CLUB By Ray Hickson

Bowlers are now permitted to have a Roll Up. This is for Canungra Bowls Club members only at this stage. Social distancing must be adhered to at all times. The Club now has a COVID-19 register book for members to write down their details before having a Roll Up. Due to COVID19 regulations no more than 10 people are

allowed on the premises at one time and you must play on every second rink. Please phone Greens Director Brian Laurence 0412 107 783 for days and time of play. Many thanks to Shane Stevenson and Brian Laurence for all their help to those members that are still in self isolation. Also thank you to members who have looked after the Club gardens and lawns so that it

will not looked neglected when we are able to get back to our regular bowls days again. We wish Max Ball and Wayne Reiser a quick recovery from their recent stays in hospital. All enquiries for membership please email canungrabowlsclub@gmail.com. Social membership is $5 per year, full bowling membership is $110 per year.
