Celebrating Sixty Years of Service By Keer Moriarty When Pam Moriarty walked into church on Sunday 14 November, she thought she was walking into a reunion service that she had helped organise. The truth was, behind the scenes a celebration of over 60 years of service to the Canungra Uniting Church had been put together for Pam. “I wasn’t expecting that for me,” said Pam. Now in her early eighties, Pam recently decided it was time to step down from her role with the Church Council. Her involvement with the Church began with the Methodist Church in January 1959. She returned from her honeymoon and began to teach Sunday School. In 1977, the Methodist and Presbyterian Churches merged and Pam became a member of the first Uniting Church Council. Over the years she has many fond memories. “At one point when

Pam Moriarty with the Canungra Uniting Church congregation. Mum was teaching Sunday School we had 72 children. Cheryl Taylor (now Cheryl Ford) was one of the children - she would have been only three or four years old.” With only the church building, Sunday School classes were scattered

around the church grounds, until they embarked on a major fundraising effort to purchase and move a wooden hall which came from Cedar Grove. “I remember Avril Mahony and Avil McLennan (the wife of the school

principal) were very involved. We ran so many cake stalls to get that hall there!” “All my kids went to Sunday School there, then Dick ran the Youth Group in the hall.” Pam said so many people have been involved

in the development of the Canungra Uniting Church, many of whom are close friends. Canungra Uniting Church will hold a Christmas Carols night on Saturday 18 December at the Church grounds, 33 Appel Street, Canungra.

HUMANS of CANUNGRA

By Keer Moriarty Photo by Katie O’Brien

Paige Templeman spent her early years in Hong Kong and then faced her initial post-school years in the midst of a pandemic. Confident, funny and very honest, even without a plan you get the feeling that Paige will go on to do some great things.

You lived in Hong Kong for a while, how long were you there? My family (Mum, Dad and brother Donovan) lived in Hong Kong for five years before they had me. Donovan was born in Australia and they moved to Hong Kong when he was little. Mum came back to Australia to have me. Was that for your Dad’s work? Yes, he was an engineer working on the Hong Kong airport. Did you go back to Hong Kong after you were born? Once I was fine to travel, Mum took me back. I don’t remember anything about Australia before I moved here when I was eight. Do you remember much of Hong Kong? I loved it. I feel sad that I wouldn’t go there now that China is in charge of it. Our friends say it’s not the same anymore.

What was it like moving from Hong Kong to Australia? I remember the first day of primary school at Canungra, they put me in Grade Seven because I was so big and tall, they thought I was in Grade Seven. I went into this classroom and they were learning multiplication and I had no idea what that was. You were eight? Yes. I was supposed to be in Grade Two. They quickly came and got me and said “this girl is supposed to be in Grade Two”. It was funny, because they were learning multiplication and I was like “What’s this? I don’t know what this is.” Was it a culture shock? In Hong Kong I went to a big international school and there were people from all over the world. But I’m glad I came to

Canungra, I like it. You finished school in 2019 and we’ve been in a pandemic since - did that affect your plans for after school? I didn’t really have a plan for after school. My friend and I were going to Germany and Europe in 2020. I bought tickets and the pandemic got worse and we couldn’t go. I went to Uni for two weeks to do Forensic Science. I just struggled so much. I kind of knew I wouldn’t like it, and I gave up after two weeks so I didn’t have to pay the HELP fees. Since then I don’t know what I’m doing. I’ve been told when you go out you tell people you’re a Pie Maker. Yeah, it’s just easier, and it sounds better than saying “I’m a dishie”. People are like “oh what pies do you make?” They’re not going to ask “what dishes do you wash?”

Paige Templeman In reality, do you do both? At The Outpost Cafe I do a bit of everything. I serve customers, I wash dishes, I do cooking, I do the pies, whatever they need me to do. I think Pie Maker sounds better - it’s a conversation starter. How has the pandemic affected you socially? For a whole year we didn’t go out, now I’m 20 I should be over my clubbing stage but I’m not, I’m just getting into my party stage. I’m a pretty confident

person but I find it so hard talking to people now. A lot of people my age haven’t had much social interaction. I feel like young people have lost their communication skills with each other. Which is so sad, I think. I feel sorry for people my age who went to uni (not myself). They’ve hardly made any friends because they’ve done uni online. Everyone says it is supposed to be the best time of your life but it’s just not for them.

Community the Winner at Pitch Night By Keer Moriarty Community groups took home $6,500 after successfully pitching their ideas to the Board of the Bendigo Community Bank, Canungra & District. The evening was like a Theatresports event with some very imaginative skits performed. C&K Community Kindergarten and Mountain Mates got the children involved and were happy to go home with grant money for art lessons by Kate Kinsela (C&K) and a new oven (Mountain Mates). John King reprised his role of wannabe carols singer, ‘Wazza’ for the St Luke’s Church pitch and was rewarded with $500 towards the running of their carols night. Canungra Men’s Shed

Crooks on the Run! By Keer Moriarty

For some people spending a year with three kids and two dogs in the confines of a caravan would be a nightmare, but for the Crook family it is the trip of a lifetime. After a year of planning, Steve and Kym Crook with Chloe (18), Ella (15) and Cooper (13), leave in December to travel around Australia. They will be accompanied by Jas the four year old Lhasa Apso cross and SJ the seven year old Rottweiler. They purchased a 20 foot Royal Flair caravan specifically for the trip. “When Kym suggested the trip, I said “If we’re doing it, we’re doing it in style”,” laughed Steve. The couple wanted to

do the trip before their children move on to the next stage of their lives, with Ella and Cooper able to continue studying online. “Chloe has just graduated from high school and did a Diploma of Social Media and Marketing.” “So she will be our Marketing Manager.” They have created a ‘Crooks on the Run’ logo and Instagram page and are excited about sharing their travels with their followers. Although Steve will leave Live Fit Gyms at the Canungra and Yarrabilba locations in good hands, he is looking forward to posting workout videos in iconic locations throughout Australia while they travel. Kym has leased the Canungra Beauty premises to Stacey Garrett of

Create the Image, but will take waxing and nail equipment with her on the trip, giving the option to offer beauty services in the caravan parks they stay in. One of the most difficult parts of planning was packing clothing to take for a year that can be stored in a small space. “Culling the wardrobes has been difficult, especially for the girls,” said Kym. They are hoping by the time they leave border restrictions will have eased and they will be able to travel across to the coastline of Western Australia. “We don’t have a set timetable, if we find a place we like we can stay for two weeks,” said Steve. To keep up with the Crooks adventures, follow Crooks on the Run 2021 on Instagram.

Vale Joy Drescher 15/11/1944 – 28/11/2021 By Susie Cunningham The Scenic Rim and the world will never be the same after beloved icon Joy Drescher passed away on 28 November. She was in public office across three decades and was the first and only female Mayor Beaudesert Shire ever had. The larger-than-life character who always spoke it like it was threw her support behind community groups and endeared herself to everyone she met through her uninhibited laughter and zest for life. Joy, who had been battling breast cancer for two years, was active right up until her very last day. The Canungra Times shares these words with permission from one of Joy’s daughters, Carmel Geromoschos-Sheil: In loving memory .... Anyone who knew my mum, or had heard her laugh, read her column,

seen one of her hats... knew she was larger than life. She was eccentric, which kind of drove me crazy as a child and as an adult, but she was one of a kind, she lived her life, and she longed to be old enough to tell the nay sayers where they could stick their ideas... Oh my, I thought we’d have years more to come visit, talk, phone calls at all hours... except early in the morning. Well... I guess she won her battle... no more chemotherapy for her... no more blood tests... yesterday (28 November 2021) at 76 she came 2nd in Australia in a speech contest, she went to a political rally, she had dinner at the Chinese Restaurant... but sadly... She has laughed her last laugh, breathed her last breath... her stories (or stories about her), will be long remembered. Her name was Joy, and it’s how she lived her life.

Fighting to Save the Graves By Keer Moriarty On the hill behind Canungra’s main street is an unassuming parcel of land that holds the heart of long term residents. The site contains the remains of John Scarborough and five babies under nine months of age - all of whom have living descendants in Canungra. One of the descendants, Vicki Rayner purchased the block of land adjacent to the grave site, with the intention of ensuring the site was well maintained. In 2017 a Conservation Management Plan was prepared, stating that living descendants had been consulted and wished for the graves to remain in their original location and be protected. One of the recommendations of the plan was a

memorial plaque with the names and death dates of the deceased children, however this, along with other recommendations, has not been completed. Relatives are distressed that the site is being treated by Council as one grave, when family history documents reveal the babies graves were near Scarborough and not in the same plot. Interred in the unmarked babies’ graves are five grandchildren of Amos Finch: Jesse Daniels Mahony, Cyril George McVey, Edwin Percy Fitzgerald, McVey baby (stillborn, unnamed), and Donald McVey. Ms Rayner has been fighting for four years to have both the Scarborough and Finch babies’ graves restored.

New Art Exhibition by Dave Groom

Rain Birds is an exhibition of new oil paintings by Scenic Rim Artist Dave Groom, who has an artist studio and gallery at Beechmont. In September 2019 the landscape around Dave’s property was burnt by the devastating bush fires, that sadly impacted on the local community, with many houses lost and the iconic Binna Burra Lodge destroyed. Dave’s property was one of the lucky ones that survived, purely because of the efforts by the National Park Service, assisted by the Upper Beechmont Fire Brigade, doing a crucial hazard reduction burn, just three weeks before the Sarabah fire came through. Without this burn, he would have lost his house, cottage and studio gallery to fire.

Time has moved on and fortunately the area has received great rain over the last year and the open forest that was so heavily burnt in the fire, has come back incredibly well. As an artist who portrays the landscape around him in its current form, Dave has spent the last few months painting this forest, in celebration of its regeneration. On his daily walks along the razorback near Binna Burra, he has been observing the regrowth and beauty returning to the natural landscape. Paintings include views across to Darlington and into the Coomera Valley, with the local bird life featured in many of the works. Other paintings portray the mist and cloud lifting from the mountains, after

There are exciting times ahead for Beaudesert State High School Rugby League, as I can now announce a partnership with Beaudesert Kingfishers Rugby League Club, which will see the school and club working together to develop both boys and girls Rugby League in the local area. The school and club will be co-sharing facilities, giving young people more opportunities to train and improve their skills. Beaudesert State High School will also be utilising Kingfisher coaches on a weekly basis, as part of the Rugby League Sporting Program of Excellence. The Signature Programs are steaming ahead, with an overwhelmingly positive response from the community. It’s been wonderful to hear back from parents and students who are keen to take part in the Equestrian Program 2022. The staff running the program are looking forward to attending a number of competitive events which have already been added to next year’s calendar. The lead teacher of our STEM Mastery Program is currently investigating micro:bits, which are small, pocket-size computers that can be programmed to run a wide variety of functions. It will be rewarding to see how students apply their creativity to the challenge of coding these ingenious devices. Last of all, my position as Principal at Beaudesert State High School has been extended for next year. 2022 promises to be even bigger and better than 2021!

Until next time ... Beaudesert State High School graduates Aimee Hinson and Trad Leach at The Links Golf Club. The Canungra Times – December 2021

Canungra’s History Before we get too steamed up about rising petrol prices, let us go back seventy years to the years of WW2 (second world war 1939 to 1945) and up to 1950. During this time the war effort was paramount and those of us ‘holding the fort’ at home had to make do! The Government brought in rationing coupons for essentials such as tea, sugar, butter, meat, clothing and petrol. In 1942 serious rationing came in for each adult! 1. 112 clothing coupons per year (per person?) were allowed. I do remember being told of one mother who crocheted her daughter’s wedding dress with wool (as wool did not need coupons).

2. 227gms (1/2 lb) of tea was allowed per five weeks. 3. 900 grams (2lbs) of sugar per fortnight. 4. Approx 2 kilograms (4 lbs) of meat per week. 5. 450 grams (1 lb) of butter per fortnight. As with other families on a dairy we could make our own butter so our coupons were passed on to a large local family. 6. Later eggs and milk were occasionally rationed. Petrol rationing was huge - even though few families had even one car - (not one per ‘driver’ as in 2021). Farmers were given coupons to purchase fuel for their milking machines - they were allotted 18 gallons (approximately 82 litres per two months). For the vehicle they were

Elysium Village Lights Up for the Community! SHOP

By Keer Moriarty

LOCAL

Elysium Village’s Christmas Lights Extravaganza is set to delight locals and visitors alike when it returns in December. After being cancelled due to COVID restrictions in 2020, residents of the Over 50s Lifestyle Village are excited to welcome people to their Christmas wonderland again this year. Sales Manager Dennis Ring said the idea of the Christmas Lights Extravaganza came about when Neil and Denise Winter moved to Elysium. “Neil wanted to continue with the Christmas lights they had been doing in their home, in honour of their daughter Tanya who had passed away,” he said. When they moved to

Elysium, Neil and Denise brought their lights and Elysium spent over $20,000 on additional decorations, creating a Village-wide Christmas atmosphere every night from 1 December through to Boxing Day. Sadly, Neil passed away earlier this year, but his wife Denise said he knew how important the Elysium Village Christmas Extravaganza is to local families. Entry is by gold coin donation and there is ample parking outside the Village. Visitors are invited to walk through the Village to view the light displays, meet Santa and enjoy the festive atmosphere. The Christmas Lights Extravaganza opens at 6.30pm on 1 December and is open every night from 6.30pm to 9pm until 26 December.

Buy local Christmas 2021 SHOP

Scenic Rim residents are being encouraged to spread the festive cheer to local businesses and ‘Buy Local Christmas 2021.’ Every purchase at a local business entered into the draw will give a chance to win $1,000! It is easy to go in the draw to win $1,000 – simply make a purchase at a Scenic Rim business, write your name and phone number on the back of a receipt, and drop it in a ‘Buy Local Christmas 2021’ box set up in various shops to go in the draw to win $1,000 (the boxes will be collected in early January and the draw will be mid-January). Federal Member for Wright, Scott Buchholz and State Member for Scenic Rim, Jon Krause, have initiated the ‘Buy Local Christmas 2021’ campaign, in conjunction with Chambers of Commerce

in the Scenic Rim. The campaign follows the success of a similar initiative in 2019. Mr Buchholz said the Government had delivered more than $28.5 billion in economic support to Queensland during the COVID-19 pandemic. “This Christmas we need is people to support local businesses – buy the locally made candle, a voucher to stay at one of our fantastic accommodation venues, visit an ecotourism park, dine locally and eat the array of locally grown produce.” “Doing this supports local businesses, local jobs and the local economy – and that makes our community stronger,” Mr Buchholz said. Mr Krause said that local businesses need support, for the jobs they provide and the contribution that many give back to the

“Small businesses are the engine room of our electorate, driving innovation, employment and economic progress – the benefits of supporting local businesses and shopping locally cannot be underestimated.

“When you shop locally, your money stays locally, with one dollar spent at a local business returning up to five times that amount through employee wages, rates and the purchase of materials and supplies,” Mr Krause said.

Jan McGregor, manager of Canungra Books and Art said “we are delighted that we will soon be able to increase the size of our shop by expanding into other rooms in the old Queenslander”. The bookshop is currently bursting at the seams so the new space will be a great addition and allow more space to display the wonderful selection of books. “We are particularly keen to create a new space for the Art section, along with new spaces for Gardening and Cooking, Music books and records,” said Jan. “The new space will also provide more space for the antiquarian and vintage books to be displayed properly, and make it possible to create a larger children’s area in the existing shop”, Jan added. The Vintage clothing section will also get to have its own room and

be an Experience

Living in a time where people tend to buy what they need when they need it, it can be difficult to find an appropriate gift. Rather than selecting a gift that won’t be used or valued, the perfect gift might be an experience rather than a tangible object. Often people are hesitant to really treat themselves to an enjoyable, relaxing experience such as a massage, hair treatment or a visit to a local winery or alpaca farm! Giving a voucher for a local, unique experience not only helps the local economy but allows your loved one to take some time out to enjoy themselves - maybe with you

included! There are numerous options available, most small businesses are able to provide a gift voucher from cafes to jewelery stores and experience gift vouchers can usually be bought online. So if there is something your family member, partner or friend has always wanted to do, why not give them a gift voucher so they can finally tick it off their bucket list? Of course, shopping for yourself can be an experience on its own - in which case a gift voucher might just be the gift the keen shopper will appreciate the most!

Beechmont Blizzards netball team finished their season on a high, overcoming Tamborine Mountain in the Grand Final game in the Hinterland District Netball’s Intermediate (15 year old) competition. Coach and Club President, Tania Evans said the girls only lost one game during the entire season. “When you’ve been on top all season, you do feel the pressure.” Beechmont Blizzards won the Grand Final by only three goals, in a game that kept everyone on the edge of their seats. For a netball small club, Beechmont has a very successful track record, with three teams competing in the HDNA competition this year. Many of the HDNA Clubs with larger numbers of players have not achieved what the Beechmont Club has done.

While the younger players train on Beechmont, the older players, being at high school off Beechmont, all train at the HDNA courts in Mudgeeraba, where all games are played. Most of the Blizzards players were in the 2019 team that won the Grand Final that year. In 2020, they made the Grand Final last year but finished Runners Up, so this year’s win was very special for them. “Most of the girls have been with the Club since they were seven years old and have played together since they were 10, they are a close knit team.” “They were ecstatic!” said Tania. “At the end I didn’t think they knew they won because it was so close.” The Canungra Times – December 2021

Tradeswoman of the Year

By Christine Tod, Beechmont Landcare

Windabout Reserve Windabout Reserve is a piece of Scenic Rim Council land that abuts Windabout Road. Although there are no direct links it sits between Beechmont Pioneer Reserve to the South and Denham Scenic Reserve to the North. Efforts have been made by the local community over the years to shift the balance from exotic weeds to the local rainforest plants in this area. White Beech trees, Gmelina leichhardtii, have been planted here in the past and a good concentration still exists. Privet has been a consistent problem in Windabout Reserve. Generally if Privet is killed or removed it has to be replaced immediately with some other plant or else it will just grow back. Other weedy trees to be found are Camphor Laurel, Tipuana and Chinese Elm. Over the last three years Beechmont Landcare, with SRRC and Federal Government grants, has been able to strategically remove some of these weeds and establish 2000 plants. Favourable weather conditions expected this summer should help to progress their growth. Unlike other reserves discussed in previous articles no regular Beechmont Landcare members now live near Windabout Reserve. We hope that the recent weed management and plantings will encourage nearby landowners to be drawn to nurturing this piece of land. Birdlife is good here and our trap cameras have caught images of other wildlife. Take a walk down into this reserve and enjoy the peace and the sounds of nature.

Representation To State Government Following a Mayoral Minute at the Ordinary Meeting of Tuesday 23 November, Council has made representation to the Premier voicing concerns on behalf of our community about the upcoming roadmap to transition from Covid 19 and the vaccine plan which will present significant restrictions and constraints to our businesses and residents. Buy Local I encourage you all to think about buying your Christmas presents and supplies as locally as possible this year, given the past few years have been very challenging for so many businesses. It’s important to remember how generously our local businesses donate to so many community raffles and fundraising projects when asked.

YOWGURRABAH By Susan Cully

Half way along the Binna Burra Road, between George’s Lookout and the entrance to the Lamington NP, is the undeveloped Yowgurrabah Lookout, overlooking Turtle Rock (Yowgurrabah). This is an easily accessible view of paradise. Michael and I have seen its every mood: cloudy, misty, raining, brown with drought, at sunrise and at sunset, burning with fire, dark with winter, and colourful with spring growth in every hue of pink, red and green. It is unbelievably bright in the moonlight, and abounds with wildlife: growling koalas, slithering snakes and marsupial gliders - a cosmic entertainment that’s free for anyone to enjoy. Yowgurrabah itself has been known to the people of this country for thousands of years. Since the first surveyors came from Europe with their recording scientists,

experts have reported on the awe-inspiring biodiversity discovered here. For my essays I have relied on the generosity of modern experts willing to share their advanced knowledge of this Gondwana landscape: botanists, entomologists, ornithologists, lepidopterists, zoologists, geologists and many more. I thank Keer Moriarty and The Canungra Times team for publishing my contributions dedicated to an appreciation of every facet in our local natural world. In this my final (seventieth!) article, I urge residents in our district to turn off the device and just walk outside and enjoy the natural environment. Sit and listen to a bird, smell a flower, or pull a noxious weed. Following my own advice, for the past five years I have taken my simple camera outside, and recorded and shared the treasures I have found.

MERRY CHRISTMAS By Alison Ford

Martin, Ali, Kathryn and Geoff would all like to wish all of our patients from 2021 and prior a Very Happy Christmas and New Year and to extend our warm thanks to you all for your support during the past four years. We have every intention to be there for you for many more years, however due to the lack of commercial space in Canungra we might not be able to continue to practise in the town. We will keep you posted on that matter. In the meantime, once the beautiful building in which we currently work is sold, we might have to work from our home on Tamborine Mountain until premises become available.

Just to let you all know we will be open throughout the Christmas Holidays in December and January, apart from Christmas Day and Boxing Day holidays, so please give us a call if you need help and we will definitely be able to see you. We can always organise a Telehealth appointment with Geoff or Kathryn if for some reason you can’t get in to the Clinic to see us. We do also do home visits if that is preferable. Let’s all hope that 2022 is an easier year for us all and that we regain some of our lost freedoms. Our blessings to all members of the beautiful Canungra Community and from all surrounding regions.

NATURE’S GEMS Bluebonnet

Northiella haematogaster

By Melissa Whitby This year I have undertaken several trips to Chinchilla to revisit some of my old birdwatching haunts that I have been visiting since I was a child. The one bird in particular that I was keen to see and photograph was the Bluebonnet. The Bluebonnet is a species of parrot and is not well-known to birdwatchers who are starting out. Identifying this parrot is relatively easy and their distinguishing features include grey-brown upperparts with blue around the face and flashes of red on their belly. There are four races of Bluebonnet in Australia and the one that lives around Chinchilla is

Northiella haemotogaster haematorrhous. This bird species is sedentary and the area where I see Bluebonnets around Chinchilla, I have been observing them in this location for 30 years. Females and young birds have plumage that is not as colourful as the males. Bluebonnets will use a variety of habitats. The Bluebonnets that I observe in Chinchilla utilize a mosaic of habitats including roadside remnant vegetation, farmlands and timbered watercourses. Usually, I see the birds in pairs or small family parties. One must be quiet and patient to observe this species and getting close to get a picture can

be a bit of a challenge if the birds are not used to people. Bluebonnets have a distinctive sound and it pays to be familiar with their calls to locate them. This species usually breeds in the later part of the year and utilizes a low hollow in a suitable tree. In my travels throughout Queensland, I have also seen Bluebonnets around Eulo and Cunnamulla. Around Eulo, the birds can be seen on the fringes of the town and were quite happy to be approached. For anyone wanting to see these birds, I would suggest looking in a location such as this. For me, Bluebonnets are special as they were one of the first western parrot species that I identified when I was growing up. It is

Bluebonnets very satisfying to be able to continue to observe the birds in a location where they have been for 30 years. For anyone that does go looking for Blue Bonnets, good luck!

I would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. This year has been a tough one for many and I hope that 2022 will be a better year for all.

TULLAMORE FARM My dad spent a lot of time in the garden growing the family’s vegetables. Lots of time weeding, watering and turning over the soil preparing to plant the next lot of vegetables. Sometimes that bed was dug and turned over several times before Dad was satisfied enough to start planting the next vegetables. His belief was that you had to turn the soil to aerate it and break it up so that whatever you planted had the opportunity to successfully produce. Prior to Dad passing he would spend time with me here at Tullamore Farm checking out the vegetable beds. Having worn-out several digging forks and spades, not to Page 40

mention his back, he struggled initially with the fact we rarely used either implement. He became, begrudgingly a massive believer in no dig growing. With the exception of carrots, all of our vegetables are grown using no dig principles. We don’t dig up or turn over the soil. We add our compost to top up the beds and we allow the earthworms plus everything else found in the soil to aerate and do the job nature intended. With the exception of where we are planting carrots, all our beds have a reasonable layer of sugar cane mulch over the surface of the soil. This copies what occurs in nature and that layer of sugar cane

News from St Luke’s By Di Ayscough

Excitement? Is that how you feel as we near 25 December and know Christmas will soon be here? There would be few people who do not feel some sense of excitement for what that brings. Apart from gifts, special foods, Christmas carols and the chance to catch up with family and friends, there will be a wonderful evening of song and celebrations at St Luke’s annual Christmas Carols, to be held in the church grounds on Wednesday 23 December commencing at 6pm. As in the past Stewart Morris will lead the evening. It will be your chance to sing along or listen to Stewart’s wonderful tenor voice. Why not bring a chair or a rug, and your family, to enjoy this special time? The congregation of St Luke’s is also very excited, and relieved, to know we are soon to welcome our own permanent priest. Reverend Dr Tom Hunton has accepted this appointment and will bring his wife and four children from Bristol, England to be with us. This appointment after almost two and a half years, is the answer to many prayers. While we have been very appreciative of our locum priests during this time, it is that sense of belonging and ownership that will bring St Luke’s to celebrate, Reverend Tom’s appointment. We can all feel excitement in our lives. We can all love our lives and what we do, but two other reasons for excitement at St Luke’s include a very successful Sausage Sizzle at Bunnings Nerang where funds were raised for the continued maintenance of St Luke’s. We were blessed to receive a generous grant of $500 from our local Bendigo Bank and this will be used to support our Carols evening. We have many reasons to feel blessed and excited. I hope you too can feel grateful and blessed in your life. Merry Christmas to you all.

From the Park By Bren Dalby

Canungra Owls Soccer News After a terrific year for the Owls, our AGM is fast approaching and we would like a few more people on the committee to share the tasks please. Keep an eye on Facebook, and our ‘about to be installed’ Moriarty Park Notice Board for the date and time for AGM and endeavour to do a little something for our great club - “many hands make light work”. Come along anyway to see what’s in store for next year and indeed this year, as we do still have social soccer on a Monday night weather permitting!

This was a lovely moment for me at the Soccer Presentation Day when Reilly Baker was awarded the prestigious Players’ Player Trophy for the Men’s Metro team; David (Dad) asked him to stand next to me for a photo … unbeknown to me he had uncovered prior, a photo of a much younger Reilly receiving one of his first soccer trophies…with me in the background lol! They simply can’t get rid of me - 11 years apart these photos were taken and I love ‘em!

Moriarty Park A super night of trivia was held to benefit Pelican and Seabird Rescue, raising $600 – although a good portion of that came from Wildcare members who couldn’t attend but wanted to support the

cause. No trivia in December as way too much happening for everyone but hope to return in January. Good chance we may be fundraising for rats and mice actually as we have a disproportionate amount of Boobook Owls coming into care at present and they eat lots! As the Valley of the Owls I hope we can do our bit for them. Anyone who has electronic or snap trap caught rodents and are not baited can we have them. Contact Bren 0414 435 919. Our December meeting will be brought forward a week to Monday 13 December at 6.45pm. Any information can be sourced from Bren 0414 435 919 or bren. dalby@bigpond.com.

Soldiers Push Reds to the Limit By Captain Jesse Robilliard

The Super Rugby Queensland Reds have been pushed to their physical and mental limits at a preseason training camp at Kokoda Barracks. The camp was run by personnel from the 6th Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment. The rugby squad had to deal with a lack of sleep and food while undergoing strenuous physical tasks. Reds’ coach Brad Thorn has endured numerous training camps in his rugby league and rugby union careers and said they resulted in premiership-winning outcomes. “I came to Canungra many times. It’s a tough few days and the people here are just brilliant with what they do,” Mr Thorn said. “Most years, after most significant Army camps, we went on to win titles – in 1998 with the Broncos, 2000 and then 2006 we did a sixday Army camp.” Overseeing the course was Corporal Wilson Purdie, of 6RAR.

“We really tested their mental and physical fortitude,” Corporal Purdie said. “That was done through a series of activities, lack of sleep and food, really trying to grind them down to the sole purpose of why they’re doing this, why they are doing it as a team. “Team-bonding activities were done through reporting on each other, activities where only one person could talk, and doing physical activities morning and night for a 48-hour period.” Reds’ fullback Mac Grealy said instructors threw in extra challenges to keep the players on edge. “We did a lot of carrying sandbags, so the hands are pretty sore – different scenarios like a village had been flooded. They needed supplies, so we had to take it to them,” Mr Grealy said. “The instructors would call ‘ambush’ and, if you’re doing something wrong, you lifted something incorrectly or

Kacy Loving Canungra Life By Keer Moriarty As the granddaughter of New Zealand racehorse trainer, Ashley Fogden, working with horses was always Kacy Fogden’s passion. “I always loved the idea of being a trainer but I never thought it was possible when I was younger,” she said. In her breakout training year, Kacy has been recognised as one of Queensland’s most upcoming trainers, earning the Nationwide Super Rising Star award at the coveted 2021 TAB Wayne Wilson Medal and Trainers Awards. Kacy moved to Australia from New Zealand in 2007 and moved to Canungra nine years ago. “I love Canungra, I think I’d struggle living somewhere else.” She worked with Aquis from its establishment in 2015, managing the daily care and career preparation of over 150 young racehorses. She obtained her training licence in 2019 and trained privately for

Aquis Farm, a selection of Hong Kong and Queensland based clients from her Canungra and Gold Coast Training Centres. Kacy sent out her first winner with just her third runner when Singular Sensation saluted at the Gold Coast in April 2019.

In her first season as a trainer, she had an impressive 19% win ratio! The desire for Kacy’s services outside of Aquis Farm, led to the launch of Kacy Fogden Racing on 1 December 2020. In the last 12 months, Kacy has had an extremely impressive strike-rate

and has had success in Queensland and New South Wales. She says three year old colt, Maotai is the most memorable horse she has trained so far. This impressive horse has shown great potential over 1000 to 1400 metres. Kacey is committed

to the development of horses in her care and her staff. After a busy start to her training career, her plans for the future are to train as many winners as possible; and create an enjoyable workplace for my staff so they continue to enjoy coming to work.”
