The Day the Show (and Rodeo) Couldn’t Go On By Keer Moriarty COVID and associated government restrictions have claimed two more victims - the Canungra Show and Rodeo. Due to be held on 11 July 2021, the Canungra Hotel Rodeo was initially postponed after rainfall made the arena unsafe for use. It was rescheduled for 4 September. COVID restrictions in Queensland made running the Canungra Show impossible - with community sport cancelled and limits on numbers. Still hopeful of running the Rodeo on 4 September, volunteers and the Committee were devastated when COVID cases in New South Wales escalated, causing border controls to be tightened. Canungra AH&I Society President, Roly Ethell said the Committee was devastated to have both events cancelled for a second year. “We were concerned about the potential for the event to become a ‘spreader event’, given the number of COVID

cannot run the Canungra Hotel Rodeo in the traditional manner.” “We appreciate the efforts and commitment of the Canungra Show Society Committee, volunteers, sponsors and the continued dedication of

the National Rodeo Association, Honky-Tonk Promotions, rodeo competitors and contractors that eagerly bring this event to our community each year.” Society Secretary, Sharon Rafferty said plan-

HUMANS of CANUNGRA

Terry Legg

By Keer Moriarty Photography by Katherine O’Brien Photography

For someone who claims he is ‘a bit of a dummy’ at school, Terry Legg is has achieved a lot. He has run his own business, been involved with Surf Life Saving most of his life as an instructor and as a Chaplain and now lives in Canungra with his wife Maureen. I was left feeling he’s an inspiration to any kids who struggle at school.

Terry starts talking about school and how ‘dumb’ he is. I find that hard to believe. Well, I used to be the second last or last person in the class in the gradings. Whenever we’d do an exam I’d be one of the last two. Because of that I used to sit in front of the teacher all the time. But I was brainy enough to know that he was longsighted and he couldn’t see the front unless he had his glasses on. So I used to sleep during the day (laughs). You used to sleep? While he was teaching! And one day he came over and whack, he whacked me in the back. I said ‘what did you do that for?’ “Don’t sleep when I’m talking” he said. He was the only teacher I ever went back to visit. No teacher would fail me because they didn’t want to have me again. Were you that bad? I was just so dumb.

Where was that? Ithaca Primary School in Brisbane. Then I went to State High, because they’d just started a class for dummies. They wanted kids from very low academic standard. It was a special class called Sub Junior Nine. The teachers there used to be very kind of patronising. I did learn some things but not much. In September that year the Post Office had an exam you could do and if you passed and were selected you could become a telephone technician. It was the Grade 12 Exam and I was a dummy in Grade 9. Dad said, “You’ve gotta go and do it!” Because he knew I was dumb and he didn’t want to keep paying money for me to go to school. Aw, that’s sad. Well, I passed it. (At this point I nearly spat out my tea). So it was a Grade 12

Exam, and you were in Grade 9 and you think you’re dumb but you passed that exam. Well, I could never do anything. It ended up I got the equivalent of a Diploma of Electrical Engineering with the exams within Telecom. I got that and ended up having a staff of 26 in Quality Assurance. Is Life Saving something you’ve been involved with your whole life? 1956 I started with Northcliffe Surf Club. So you would have been 16? Yes, I had to thumb a lift down to the Coast. Mum and Dad weren’t real happy about that. Then when I was 17 my swimming coach said they’re forming a new Life Saving Club at Scotts Point in Redcliffe and they need a Secretary and I put you in for it. Terry trained several life saving squads. What I liked, I understood and I could communicate it. My

Terry Legg knowledge is not really ... its a practical hands on thing. That’s the case for a lot of people. You’ve been involved in Chaplaincy, how did that happen? I used to hang around church but I’m not religious. I have a relationship with God, but not with the God box. Yep, I get it. In 1978 the local church started a soccer club and when my boys played I found myself just walking around talking to people! Little did I know what I was doing was chap-

laincy! They’d start talking and then its all this heavy stuff! So it wasn’t official, people would just open up to you? Yes. I’d go back to the Minister and ask advice and he said, ‘Just keep talking to them’. One Saturday afternoon I was talking to some guy and the following Monday he rang the church and asked to speak the minister. Keith said ‘Yes I’m the minister. And the guy said, ‘No, I want to speak to the guy I was talking to on Saturday!’

Mullets for Mental Health

The saying ‘everything old is new again’ is certainly true for the revitalisation of the men’s Mullet hairstyle. Justin Graham started growing his mullet in August 2020. It has taken him a year to achieve the iconic 80s style - just in time for Mullets for Mental Health, a fundraising campaign run by the Black Dog Institute throughout September. Justin has formed ‘Team Canungra’, comprising a number of friends and family members - including Justin’s son Taylor, Col Ford, and Luke Morgan. Although he didn’t grow the mullet specifically for the campaign, Justin said mental health is a good cause to raise money for. “One in five people

experience mental health issues and I’ve had my share of mental health issues over the years - my own trials and tribulations. Obviously, the loss of my brother,” he said. “And quite often it’s hard to try and deal with it. For some people going to a shrink is not their thing, and it’s not my thing either. For me, if I’m down I reach out to friends and talk it through with mates.” “I’ve had a few mates over the years, Col being one of them, who have helped me when I’ve had things hit me.” Sadly, suicide is the leading cause of death for Australians aged 15 to 44, and half of those who experience mental health symptoms do not seek treatment. The Black Dog Insti-

tute is the only medical research institute in Australia to investigate mental health across the lifespan. Last year, when the campaign debuted, more than $3 million was raised for research studies, education programs, digital tools and clinical services. Team Canungra was aiming to raise $1000, but with donations already over $700, Justin hopes that goal will be easily surpassed. Justin has left Team Canungra open for more people to join, and donations are accepted via the Black Dog Institute web site. Simply go to teamblackdog.org.au/event/ mulletsformentalhealth/ home and search for Team Canungra.

Taylor Graham and his father, Justin Graham are participating in Mullets for Mental Health.

No Room at Canungra Motel

Canungra Motel is now closed.

O.W.L. Wholefoods

The Canungra Motel has closed its doors and will not reopen as accommodation. Owner Tony Pennisi, also the Principal of real estate agency The Property Hub, said he is considering options for the site but has no firm plans at the moment. The site also contains the Canungra Books and Art building which is not affected by the closure of the Motel. The motel was constructed in the 1970s and has operated continuously until August this year. Mr Pennisi purchased Canungra Motel from previous owners, mother and son Jean and Stuart Comley, in 2012 and has leased it since. The effect of bushfires, COVID lockdowns and government restrictions saw the motel struggle for the past two years. The site has been linked to several businesses in the area.

Jean and Stuart bought it in 2000 and ran it along side Possums Cafe for many years. Popular gift shop, Flutterby Fantasy operated out of the cafe building until 2013, and Canungra Books and Art opened in that building in 2017. In 2005, Stuart started The Canungra Times while running the motel and Possums Cafe. Initially printing A5 size copies on the motel photocopier. Mr Pennisi said he wants to do something quite iconic with the site. “I love what Jan’s done with Canungra Books and Art. It is kind of quirky and I like something different.” “I want to do something that it is a drawcard for people. I have no intentions of doing something that is not going to be a good outcome for the town.”

Pink Kicks off withBECommunity AST. TRADITIONAL Dinner ner is just one of many events being held from late September through to the end of October. Canungra Chamber of Commerce President, Monique Morcus reminded people that Turning Canungra Pink supports people with all types of cancer. “This event was started in 2011 by a local business owner, a breast cancer survivor,” she said. “In 2013 the Canungra Chamber of Commerce became involved, creating a fundraising event that lasted throughout October and involved most of the businesses and many residents.” “Volunteers in the community contribute to making the event such a success and it has grown from strength to strength in the past few years.” “This year has many new faces which is great to see.”

Over 50s Lifestyle Village Approved

Canungra’s first Over 50s Lifestyle Village will become a reality after an application was approved by Scenic Rim Regional Council for a Material Change of Use at 7-39 Finch Road. The development will comprise of 188 two or three bedroom homes, sold on a leasehold basis, in a gated community. Strong questioning and discussion around water, infrastructure and rates took place at the Council meeting where the application was debated. Cr Derek Swanborough asked what would happen in the event of a drought or bushfire, when the Canungra Creek runs dry. “Will we be held accountable in the event of a disaster when all of a sudden there is no water and they say, ‘well who approved this thing’?” Council officers said Seqwater would tanker water into Canungra in the event that Canungra Creek was not able to supply the township. Emergency vehicles

would be supplied from the standpipe at the water treatment plant. Mayor Greg Christensen said Seqwater has provided Council with clarification that Seqwater are satisfied with their ability to provide tanker supply, rather than the cost of a fixed pipeline installation for the current risk period for not being able to access adequate flows.” “While it might be unpalatable in the minds of some people to see those tankers, that is their identified contingency for resilience of supply,” he said. Division 3 Councillor Virginia West said Council couldn’t refuse a development application because it wasn’t popular with the community. “Legally, the development application has ticked all the Planning Scheme boxes and adheres to the requirements from other agencies,” she said. “We have previously refused a Canungra-based development on the basis of inadequate water

to advocate for a reliable water supply for the Canungra township.” Cr West also said unlike many other developers, the applicant had also consulted with community members about the development to gain their feedback. “The applicant is aware of water supply concerns within the community and will provide above and underground water tanks within the development, including a 5,000 litre tank per

dwelling, as well as using recycled water in public open space,” she said. “Based on community feedback, they have also removed a proposed bowling green to encourage residents to join the local Canungra Bowls Club and become part of our community. The motion to approve the application was carried 5-2, with Councillors Derek Swanborough and Duncan McInnes voting against the proposal.

Tale of A Small Car

“When you put every other distraction aside, the only vintage car you really need is a hot Austin 7” This is the opening line to Nick Sinclair’s book telling the story of his family’s 1929 Austin 7. The tiny car joined the Sinclair family in New Zealand as a beaten up run-around used by the teenagers of the family and went on to remain in the family for 60 years. The Austin had a very rough time being used for many family bush and beach adventures in New Zealand. When Nick moved to Australia in 1971 the little car remained in New Zealand until Nick had it shipped to Australia in 1982. Living on the Gold Coast at the time, Nick later decided to embark on the long journey to restore the little car to it’s original condition, with careful attention to every detail! When Nick and his

wife, Rosanne, moved to Beechmont in 2017 the little Austin came with them and now enjoys the occasional outings in the area and to Austin 7 Rallies around South East Queensland. Nick recently wrote a wonderful book to tell the entertaining story of the little Austin 7 from its beginning with the family in New Zealand, and the very Kiwi-style adventures of that time, until its more sedate life in the hills of the Hinterland. A charming book for all lovers of vintage cars and a good story. Kiwis will love reminiscing about old times in New Zealand and the particular flavour of New Zealand humour. Canungra Books and Art will be hosting a book launch with Nick and his car on Sunday 19 September from 11am to

OBITUARY

A Very Giving Man John McKellar Wilson 26 June 1933 – 9 July 2021 John McKellar Wilson was born on the 26th of June 1933 in Bankstown, New South Wales. He grew up in Cronulla with his three brothers: Gordon, Ken and Richard. As boys growing up, walking home from school they would tease and call the Catholic School kids names; little did John know that he would one day marry a Catholic girl - the love of his life. John finished his Pharmacy Qualification in 1952 and was conscripted into the Navy in 1953, where he spent 12 months traveling around Australia on the Warramonga. On his return he met young Josephine and they started dating. On 25 July 1959 he and Josephine were married in Sydney and over the next 12 years they raised six wonderful sons: Scott, Dave, John,

Murray, Peter and Craig. Josephine kept trying for that elusive baby girl - she maintains today that two of the boys were supposed to be girls. The quest for girls in the family came to fruition with the next generation - they had nine beautiful granddaughters and two strapping grandsons. John and his brothers were great sailors and extremely competitive. Every weekend they used to race in their 16 foot skiff. The Wilson brothers were known for their numerous wins in State and Australian titles in the boat they named ‘The Honest John’ after their dad. The brothers travelled and raced every weekend with their families in tow - their wives and children would follow along and play on the shorefront watching the boats race by. John loved the ocean and his daily ritual for

many years was to head off to the Shelly Beach ocean pool for a morning swim to do 50 laps, getting his daily fix of saltwater In 1973 John and Josephine decided to move from Sydney to raise their boys in Queensland. They bought Adina, the property at Boyland which is still the place of residence today. Farming wasn’t John’s forte, so he continued with pharmacy relief work in Beaudesert and Boonah until he convinced his eldest brother, Gordon, to move up to Queensland. Richard and Ken were also in Queensland, so it was back to sailing skiffs again, this time at Wynnum, East Brisbane. Ken would travel down from Imbul, near Gympie, for the race meetings. In 1980, John bought a chemist shop in Slacks Creek, where he and Gordon worked together. In 1982, young John Junior started working with John Senior and Gordon at Slacks Creek. In 1985, John sold the shop in Slacks Creek and bought the tiny corner shop in Canungra, closer to home. They had to put two fold up chairs outside the shop as there was not enough room to have anything else in there but stock! Over the next four years John had plans of expanding the chemist. He bought the shop next door and knocked down the wall to make it larger. In 1991, they sold the Chemist in Canungra and purchased The Lakeside Chemist at Palm Beach. After nine years at the Palm Beach Chemist and at the age of 65, John de-

Retirement lasted for six months, before he was buying back his beloved Canungra Chemist again. As soon as he was settled, he extended the shop again to the size it is today. When asked why he wanted to go back to work again, he replied, “I still have a lot to give to the community.” John Snr and John Jnr worked together for 29 years, giving service to the people in Canungra until June 2021, when he

sold the shop. John passed away at his home, Adina on Friday 9 July 2021. To his customers, John was always available to give advice and listen to their problems. He is remembered throughout Canungra as one of nature’s gentlemen - a kind and caring man who always had time for you - no matter what the ailment or how long you needed to talk! He will be sadly missed by his family, friends and the Canungra community as a husband, father and community carer and above all, a very giving man.

Josephine Wilson and family would like to thank everyone for their words of comfort during this sad time. Your kindness will not be forgotten. The Canungra Times – September 2021

McAuley College is Growing Up!

McAuley College will welcome its first Year 12 students in 2022. Principal Deidre Young said from McAuley’s early beginnings they have strived to achieve excellence in all they do. “From creating a warm and welcoming first impression to providing our students with opportunities to explore new ideas and stretch their resilience,” she said. Recently, McAuley’s Visual Arts and Media Arts students produced photographic work to display in shop windows throughout Beaudesert. “I was in awe of the quality and depth of their work, as not only was it a

testament to their newly acquired skill, but it was also a reminder of the calibre of our teachers.” “Each of our students are called by name, we know them, the whole student, and they are an integral part of the tapestry of McAuley College.” McAuley’s touchstones of Believe, Learn, Serve are at the forefront of everything they do and act as a reminder to students that they are part of a community that stretches far beyond the perimeter of the College. The curriculum offered at McAuley College ensures ATAR and Vocational pathways are available for students, with a range of certificate and diploma courses

Canungra State School Principal, Kylie Todhunter, believes the relationships formed within the community are central to learning. “We endeavour to support all students through the combined effort of school staff, parents, local businesses and residents and the Kokoda Barracks,” said Mrs Todhunter. “The Canungra School community is unique and special. It is a community in which we strive to value and respect each other and respect our school as a place of learning.” “With Kokoda Barracks as part of our town, we welcome families from various parts of Australia. We have families with farming backgrounds as well as being involved in trades and businesses.” Over the past five years Canungra State School has maintained a steady growth in the student population but is still a small school where every student is known by name. Don’t Wait Until You Smell Smoke!

Emergency services personnel are urging residents to prepare for the fire season now. “A bushfire won`t wait for you to get ready,” said Jamie Gallagher of Canungra Rural Fire Brigade. He said it is important for people to prepare their home, property and family now and have a Bushfire Survival Plan in place before a bushfire strikes.

“It’s a few minutes now that could save a life later.” Firefighters were frustrated by properties that were inaccessible during the 2019 bushfires. Gates that were too narrow for fire trucks to get through, old cars and washing machines blocking access to the house and lantana growing under homes were just a few of the hazards they encountered.

CRFB First Officer, Damon Rockliff said people need to look around their property and prepare now. “Wonglepong is a major area of concern, but there is fuel around everywhere,” he said. “Even the areas that burned two years ago have a high fuel load again now.” • Remove hazards and flammable materials from your property.

• Regularly mow your lawn. • Trim low-lying branches. • Clear leaves, twigs, bark and other debris from the roof and gutters. • Ensure brigade trucks can find and access your property. Canungra Auxiliary Brigade Captain, Stuart Spalding, said people need to act. “Don’t wait until you

smell smoke to work out what you are going to do,” he said. A bushfire plan should include how to transport all family members, pets and livestock in the event of an evacuation. For more information on how you can prepare for bushfire season visit www.qfes.qld.gov.au/ bushfires or contact your local brigade.

Farmers Open their Gates!

Local producers across the Scenic Rim opened their gates as part of the Scenic Rim Farm Gate Trail on Saturday 28 August. Sarabah Estate, Greenlee Farm, Mountview Alpaca Farm and O’Reilly’s Canungra Valley Vineyards were amongst 20 properties to take part in the event, organised by tourism organisation, Destination Scenic Rim. Robyn Lee of Greenlee Farm said they had an influx of visitors, with people coming from Brisbane and the Gold Coast. “We had a flurry of people at the beginning and end of the day. I think people were doing a trail from east to west or west to east.” Greenlee’s nuts and macadamia brittle were also sold at other farms on the day, including Tommerup’s Dairy Farm, Towri Sheep Cheeses and Running Creek Beef.

get our luggage and hopped on the bus. We buckled up and set off for Numinbah Valley Environmental Education Centre. When we arrived, we put our luggage into our cabin, I was in Whipbird. Soon we went into the dining hall for morning tea then discussed how we will get through the day.

By Mae Todhunter, 4C On 23 August I waited and waited with my legs shuddering. After Year 4 camp was postponed due to lockdown we were off! Finally, the bus came and we were off for camp. We went to

Koby (PW) for being an ambitious and focused student who enjoys participating in all learning tasks. My first activity was the mysterious forest walk. I used the senses, smell, touch, feel and to hear, so I will know what’s around me. After that we had lunch in the dining hall. When we had lunch, I was full of excitement because the blindfold trail was going to be so much fun. I had to hold onto a rope so I know the route. We had to go

through a series of obstacles and on the second round I bumped my head. Next was the Sustainability Challenge. We had to go with the partner all around the centre and press blue buttons to listen to information. We learned how to save the planet, like composting toilets and solar hot water. Saving the planet is very important because we don’t want it to be all messy. That’s why the sign right near the centre says “Do not litter to the valley”. After that was recreation time and that means afternoon tea. We noticed the choc chip cookies were so delicious. After recreation time we had some free time to do whatever we wanted. Next was dinner time. I tried chicken schnitzel; it was delicious. I was so excited to go see the glowworms. But I didn’t have to wait long, soon the bus was here to take us to the caves. 4J went first see them.

Canungra State School Happenings We had to stop people from shining their torches towards the glowworm caves because the lovely glow-worms will die. Then it was our turn and I looked at the glowworms. I showed good bravery to myself and Miss Kim. I showed bravery even though I was scared of the dark. The glow-worms were spectacular and breathtaking. When we got back to camp we had a little meeting about sleeping in our cabins. Miss Kim came in to check on us and we were awake and out of our beds for the first few times but finally we got to sleep, chatting and giggling was fun. The next morning Miss Kim came in again, so we could get dressed and brush our teeth and have a shower - we skipped the brush our teeth and show-

er part. But soon after we had to tidy and pack up. We had some free time before the breakfast bell went. During free time we could smell pancakesyummy! The final activity was Creature Features. We got to hold and touch reptiles like lizards, turtles and snakes. My favourite was the Eastern Longneck turtle, one was speedy and one was slow. Year 4 camp was exquisite! The best thing was the Sustainability Challenge, I want to help save our planet so we won’t litter Earth. I want to say thank you to our teachers, aides and people who work at Numinbah Valley Environmental Education Centre.

Check for Fire Ant Nests

The National Fire Ant Eradication Program is reminding everyone to keep an eye out for fire ants. National Program General Manager Graeme Dudgeon says fire ants build their nests higher in cold weather to gather warmth. “Fire ant nests can sometimes be tough to spot because they can look like a flat patch of dirt. A mounded nest is easier to spot,” he said. “While our aerial, field and odour detection dog teams are out looking for nests in areas across South East Queensland, the community plays a vital role in spotting fire ants in their own yards, parks and local neighbourhood. “We’re asking everybody to keep their eyes

open and report any suspicious ant mounds to us. “We also suggest caution. Fire ants have a nasty sting and disturbing the nest could see you meet them up close and personal.” Fire ants are copper brown in colour, very small and unlike other ants can vary in size at anything from 2 to 6 mm.

Where to Look Residential: Lawns, footpaths or driveways, garden beds, around taps, sprinklers and other water sources, utility pits. Rural: Dams and irrigation lines, edges of cultivated land, cropland post-harvest, fence lines, piles of organic matter. Report suspect fire ants within 24 hours of finding them via fireants.org. au or call 13 25 23.

Stories from the Grave

A new book tells the stories of everyday people who – willingly or unwillingly – were participants in events that made local and national headlines. Grave Tales: Scenic Rim & Surrounds includes the story of the Stinson crash and also of Sarah Wease. Five of Mrs Wease’s sons fought in World War One, each one fought a very different war and

authors Helen Goltz and Chris Adams have captured the family’s heartache sensitively in Grave Tales. The Stinson crash tells concisely how bushman Bernard O’Reilly found a missing aircraft with seven people on board when no-one else could. This is a well known part of Canungra’s history, however Gotlz and Adams’ account is very compelling and is worth

Funding for More Bushfire Recovery Projects

Beechmont Landcare will receive funding for the Riparian Restoration Headwaters Back Creek project under a Federal grant. Member for Wright Scott Buchholz announced $691,482 for further bushfire recovery projects in the region, for the regeneration of native wildlife and habitat following the Black Summer bushfires. The project will protect native regrowth in bushfire affected areas and create buffers adjacent to fire damaged areas of Lamington National Park. Beechmont Landcare will remove declared weeds, replant flora and encourage natural revegetation to restore the ecosystem structure, biodiversity and resilience of riparian corridors and support the recovery of species including Lamington Spiny Crayfish, frogs, ground-dwelling mammals and reptiles, rare fungus and ferns. Volunteers will undertake seed collection from mature species found and propagate and plant riparian trees and understory. Mr Buchholz said the region was hit hard by the bushfires and the community was continuing to work hard to recover. “I am pleased with the announcement we are making to provide almost $700,000 in funding support to local community groups, to restore native habitats and help our flora and fauna recovery.” “Our partnership with Landcare Australia is linking local groups with funding they need to undertake important projects and to see the roll-out of this funding go to where the local community knows it is needed.” “These new projects across our region, from the hinterland, over the Scenic Rim and into the Lockyer Valley will not only directly support native species recovery, but also provide benefit for bushfire-affected communities and landholders.”

Letters to the Editor To whom it may concern, I have two serious concerns that have been raised in my neighbourhood recently. The first is a footpath to be laid down our street - Acacia Ct, Beechmont to accommodate kids getting to school. This looks an outrageous waste of money and I strongly suspect that when it’s done, the same three or four kids will still use the road. Of course I can see the justification for a path in the easements leading to the school (and only to reduce the maintenance burden on the neighbours who live next to them) but to create a concrete footpath and devastate what has been nurtured by all the residents - by cutting down trees and tearing up the existing road verge - seems dopey, to say the least. I understand this $$million+ footpath is intended for Jervis Ct also. What about Windabout

Road, which is way too narrow to accommodate a footpath? Will the kids be driven to Jervis Ct so they can get out of the car and walk the rest of the way to school? Would parents happily drive their children to the top of Acacia Ct to walk on the footpath to school, rather than just drive them the extra km to the school? It makes no sense whatsoever. Why not install a path where it is actually required - Beechmont Road? We have planted hundreds of trees on our block and will fight to save each one of them. You may be only planning on removing trees on the nature strip, but we have been maintaining those trees for the last 13 years and we have no intention of allowing them to be damaged or destroyed. Then there is the matter of the impact on our gravel driveway. Council intends to put a concrete path straight

through it and the resulting erosion is going to be an ongoing, repeating and expensive repair for us. Every time a car leaves our driveway, gravel will be displaced at the edges of the footpath, creating a drop-off that will only increase and deepen in heavy rain. Overland flow water rockets down our driveway from the hard surface of the street and the blocks across the road. I can’t see a good outcome for us here. The second concern I have is a ‘proposed’ private primary school, less than 500m from our fantastic little Beechmont School. There are so many negatives to this idea, but the loss of the community centre and the detriment to the staffing of the existing school should be enough to put a stop to this ridiculous proposal. I 100% do not support either of these projects. Sincerely, Darren Parish

A Tour through Beechmont’s Reserves

It is always a lovely feeling arriving on the Beechmont plateau. Fringed by trees there are long views of the Gold Coast to the East and Flinder’s Peak and the Scenic Rim to the West. If humans and cattle disappeared from the plateau the forest would quickly grow back, albeit with newcomer plants including Lantana, Privet, Camphor Laurel, Devil’s Fig and all the other weeds featured in our booklet Beechmont Weeds. Everybody in Beechmont has an opinion on where they want the balance between pasture and forest to lie. Regrowth is prevented on the rolling hills by cattle or the maintenance of lawns. Some landowners choose to let the forest return. Public spaces also hold this balance. Some of the areas where regeneration has been allowed are the Scenic Rim Coun-

cil Reserves in which Beechmont Landcare works to control the weeds and encourage our precious native flora and fauna. There are five reserves. Three, Akoonah Timbarra, Beechmont Pioneer and Denham Scenic Reserves are on Back Creek or its tributaries. The others Gwingana and Windabout Reserves are tucked into the housing estates. Over the next five months we are going to take you for a virtual tour through these reserves. Beechmont Landcare’s primary activity is raising funds to employ contractors to nurture these reserves. Growing native forest is not an easy task requiring hard work, expertise, patience, and observation. Our knowledge evolves like the habitats themselves and we hope we can pass this onto landowners wherever their personal balance may be.

Canungra’s History In 1864 my Great Grandmother, Agnes Learmonth, migrated from Greenock in Scotland to Brisbane, Queensland. The new husband of her older sister had been to Brisbane and persuaded the family to migrate to a warmer climate as another sister had Tuberculosis. On 17 September the family party boarded the “Elizabeth Ann Bright” and Agnes kept a diary of the voyage. With a family group of nine people they were allowed 16 tons of luggage, including a pair of dray wheels and a shroud for each person. The trip would take three months of good sailing at least. There were 400 paying passengers in four cabins - two for families and one

each for single men or women. These were all curtained off in groups of four beds. Agnes kept a daily diary of the voyage, from boarding the ship in Greenock until arriving off Queensland. I have that diary! It is well written in ink on both sides of A5 paper the only real problem she seldom used full stops! When I have typed it out I allowed extra space at the end of sentences. She was well educated. I know because I have her Dux medal earned in ‘First Class’ at the Edinburgh Free Church Normal School in July 1858 when she was 12 years old. On the back of the silver medal is a scroll with the Latin ‘Nec Tamen Cosumebatur’ (literally

SOMETHING OLD - VERY OLD! BY JOYCE LIBKE

Agnes Learmonth’s Dux medal. meaning ‘and yet it was not consumed) and an etching of a fire. Research has shown the Latin phrase refers to the ‘Burning Bush of Exodus 3.2’ and is the motto of many Presbyterian Churches through out the world. I also have a book

prize from high school a few years later. This medal is very heavy and elaborately engraved. It is five centimetres across, weighing five grams and has both a ring to thread a chain through, and a brooch spike. The property settled

by the Learmonth family is now the Rosemont Farm Estate at Beliveh on Beenleigh Beaudesert Road, south of Beenleigh. Anyone with an even older treasure please get in touch so we can share the story.

Council Notices

ROAD CLOSURE DELAY

SCENIC RIM CARP CUP

HEAD ROAD, CARNEYS CREEK

Council has delayed the closure of Head Road, near Brett’s Road, Carneys Creek until further notice. The road will not close on Monday 23 August as scheduled for guard rail replacement works. This is due to the border closure between Queensland and New South Wales, and the impact on nearby residents and businesses no longer able to use the shorter White Swamp Road detour to travel between Scenic Rim and Southern Downs, as an alternative to Head Road. Council is investigating the timing of the proposed work on Head Road to minimise further impacts to the community and will announce in due course.

COVID-19 Rate Relief Given the latest lock down, cancellation of significant events and associated economic impact to our region, Council adopted an extension of the due date for current rate payments from 19 August to 17 September. This means the five per cent discount will apply until the new due date.

Retirement Housing Approval I know the recent approval of this housing facility has caused concern to some people and I am very happy to talk with any residents who wish to share their views, however I am unable to respond to comments or dialogue on a Facebook site. This application, which may not be popular with all residents, has been assessed by the Planning officers and it complies with the Scenic Rim Planning Scheme which is the legislative

document approved by the State Government. Legally it ticks all the boxes. A number of conditions have been included and community input can be attributed to a number of these. In the Scenic Rim, water supply and State-controlled roads are the responsibility of other agencies, not Council. Their approval and conditions give Council no opportunity to deviate from them. I wrote in this column some months ago regarding the ongoing water issues in Canungra (which I share too) and about a large development application in town some years ago, which the council of the day refused on grounds of inadequate water. It then went to the Planning and Environment Court, at a cost to ratepayers and the decision was then approved. Had this recent application been refused by Council, the outcome would undoubtedly have been the

same. These are the challenges a Councillor faces when representing their community views; it is very easy to make the popular vote which is not always the right vote in the interests of all our ratepayers or the legislation that governs elected members. As has been the case in the past, I will continue, along with Council officers, to advocate with the external agencies (Urban Utilities, Seqwater and Department of Transport and Main Roads) to ensure our community views are heard and the infrastructure delivered in a timely manner.

Think Local Buy Local With the challenging and uncertain times we are facing due to snap lock downs, it is vital that we all consciously support local retailers, trades, suppliers and tourism operators.

Business Awards 2021 Nominations are open to highlight and reward the achievements of our local businesses with a closing date of Friday 17 September. There are a number of categories and entry forms are online via scenicrim.smartygrants.com.au. If you need advice a Regional Prosperity officer can assist you by phoning 5540 5111.

CONTACT ME I am always available to residents by telephone on 5540 5111 or 0407 630 052 or by email virginia.w@scenicrim.qld.gov.au I am normally at Canungra Library on the second Saturday each month, however unable to be there in September due to the opening of the Regeneration Art Exhibition at the Centre in Beaudesert.

COUNCIL WATCH

Brickbat

WITH AMANDA HAY

Email: frangipani1956@msn.com The following are my views, not those of the Editor. Any threats of legal action can be directed to me.

Bouquet (tongue in cheek) “Community Consultation” Mark III. Gallery Walk. Yes, we are suffering from consultation overload, particularly as nothing eventuated from the two previous expensive “consultations”. The somewhat simplistic questions such as “Why do you visit Gallery Walk?” with one response option being “Visit natural attractions” are inane. Can someone please point me in the direction of Gallery Walk’s “natural attractions” or does the

Page 26

single tree at the roundabout constitute the total offering? The very title of “The Tamborine Mountain Gallery Walk Pedestrian Boulevard Business Case” probably sums up where this is heading.

Brickbat: Will those who value Canungra’s small, country town lifestyle please turn the lights off when you leave? The approval of the 188 “Over 50s Lifestyle Village” by a vote of four to two marked a sad day indeed for Canungra. Yarrabilba in the Scenic Rim seems appropri-

The widely reported behaviour by the head of the OIA should come as no surprise. When a Councillor self-refers to the OIA, he is entitled to (rather foolishly it seems) assume he will be treated fairly, and this would include being advised that the meeting which he called for was being recorded. The subsequent baseless threats made against the editor and journalist of the Fassifern Guardian were the OIA’s undoing, once that newspaper commenced legal action in the Supreme Court and won. With calls from both sides of parliament for an investigation into the OIA, the extent of the baseless, frivolous and vexatious complaints made against Cr

Swanborough, and his predecessor former Cr Waistell, will now see the light of day.

Development Applications …and just for something different, another subdivision application: • RAL21/036 - Subdivision – Lot 3 Beaudesert-Nerang Road, Canungra. One lot into 12. Code assessable so you don’t have the opportunity to have your say. Lodged 19 August. This subdivision adjoins Canungra Creek. • EXE21/010 – 5 Seymour Dr Canungra. Council instigated Exemption Certificate, whatever that means. • RAL21/008 - 16-24 Coburg Rd, Canungra. Subdivision approved 2 August 2021 – 2 lots into 3. • EXE21/002 – 20 Seymour Drive, Canungra. Exemption

Certificate approved 16 Aug 2021. Exemption from what? No documents available. • MCU20/118 – 4071 Beaudesert-Nerang Rd, Tabragalba. Transport depot – McDonald Trucking. Approved: 6 August 2021.

Court Cases involving SRRC: Only one new court action recorded for August, but plenty on the go. MCU20/050 – originally 14 now 11 “disability cabins” - was refused by a unanimous vote at Council’s 3 August 2021 meeting held on 16 August 2021. As the decision was required to be made by 31 July 2021, the developer has already lodged an appeal. 44 people have come on board as co-respondents by Election, this time on Council’s side.

TULLAMORE FARM With Spring here it is a great time to consider growing one of our favourite fruits – the banana. Get them in and established early in Spring and get them some size so they can cope with their first winter. Frost can and will knock them around. Once well-established they grow and produce for an indefinite period of time. One of the most common reasons for not growing bananas is the concern that they may attract pests. That can be true of most productive fruit trees. Let’s consider some simple steps to minimise or even remove the pest issue. Don’t allow all the leaves to remain. As time goes by they become a mass of moulding, rotting plant material around the base of the banana clump and that can attract pests. Fortnightly, we remove all the older leaves leaving five of the youngest, healthiest leaves per plant. Chop the removed leaves up for the compost or for around the base of other trees as fertilizer or mulch. This keeps the banana patch very tidy. The photo shows one of our

banana patches and how neat and orderly it can be kept. No vermin, attractive and easy to maintain. The other concern for many is bats and possums. We have never had this problem because we follow some simple steps. As the fruit emerges and you see the bananas beginning to form, wait until you have a good quantity and then remove the purple flower or bell. For a first time fruiting plant, don’t wait for too many bananas to emerge from the flower. Accept bigger harvests when the plant is really established. When you have removed the bell or flower, it is time to bag the bunch. When bagged, you make it very difficult for the wildlife to access your future harvest. Ensure you purchase bags of a reasonable length. This ensures that the wildlife find it difficult to access the fruit. An established banana plant should produce three or four bunches every two years. If height is an issue, there are many dwarf varieties which make harvesting and maintenance very easy.

FIREWHEEL TREE By Susan Cully This beautiful flower, bright red and symmetrical like the spokes of a wheel, is the floral component of the Beechmont Landcare letterhead and logo. It is native to local rainforests, and some remnant specimens remain in the grazing lands of Beechmont. Even though tropical and subtropical in origin, the Firewheel is very adaptable, growing in gardens in varied soils and climates throughout the world. In a natural forest, it is a tall erect tree, growing to 30 metres. In cultivation, it is usually ten metres tall by five metres wide. Flowering may occur anytime from 10 to 15 years of age and can be sporadic until established. With decorative glossy dark green leaves, often with wavy, lobed margins (sinuate, therefore ‘sinuatus’)

it can also be grown as an attractive indoor tub specimen. Generally propagated from seed, the Firewheel Tree is slow growing initially and should be protected from frost in its early stages; growth accelerates with age. Fresh seed is essential for good germination. The firewheel tree is richly ornamental and is an asset to any garden, in or out of bloom. The flowers are nectar-rich, helping to sustain native, nectar-feeding birds. It is a very useful plant, and both the flowers and juvenile foliage are cut for use in floral arrangements. There are several common names: Wheel of Fire, White Beefwood, and White Silky Oak. The latter may refer to the attractively figured reddish-brown heartwood. Large logs, when available, are sawn into timber for making furniture and cabinets, or are sliced for decorative veneer.

MIDFOOT PAIN By Alison Ford

Because of its location, your navicular bone is a common site of fractures. In the majority of cases, these are stress fractures - overuse injuries caused by repetitive stress on the midfoot area. Runners, jumpers, dancers and other athletes are especially prone to these injuries, however they can occur in people who have reduced flexibility in their feet or arthritic changes in these small bones. Symptoms of Navicular Fractures The most common symptom of navicular stress fractures is a persistent aching in the arch or midsection of the foot that is worse when weight bearing. Sometimes, pain can radiate along the inside edge of the foot. An X-Ray or MRI will confirm a fracture if it is there. Your physiotherapist can refer you for an objective diagnosis. How are navicular fractures treated? Once a navicular frac-

ture is diagnosed, treatment will depend on the severity of the fracture and the symptoms it is causing. In most cases, patients will need to have the arch of the foot well strapped or wear a cast for a period of at least six weeks. In many cases physiotherapy will be necessary to help the foot and ankle regain strength and flexibility. Your Physiotherapist will choose from a variety of available modalities the most appropriate protocol for you - probably a combination of Laser Therapy, Interferential Therapy and Manual Therapy to help the fracture to heal faster and with minimal residual scar tissue. Because of the location and function of the navicular bone, and also because circulation in this area is not robust, healing can take several months before normal function is restored. In very severe fractures surgery may be necessary.

CANUNGRA RSL SUB-BRANCH By David Day, President Canungra RSL Sub Branch

Annual Veterans Day It is with regret that the Annual Veterans Day (formerly Vietnam Veterans Day), scheduled to be held on the 18 August 2021 was cancelled due to the uncertainty of COVID-19 restrictions. This event has now been scheduled for Wednesday 22 September from 11pm at D J Smith Memorial Park, depending on Covid restrictions. Veterans Day acknowledges all Defence Force Personnel since the Korean War to the present, who have worn the uniform, for a minimum of one day and those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice, whilst engaged in the execution of their services. Active service is not a requirement to be acknowledged as a Veteran, this also includes the service of our animals, who provided valuable service in the course of their duty. Every Veteran has their own stories and experiences to reminisce about that are equally important to each individual.

Secretary We take this opportunity to sadly say goodbye to our Volunteer Secretary, Mrs Jacqui Hill, who has resigned after a period of 10 years serving the Veterans of Canungra. The Board of the Sub Branch is now seeking the Services of a Volunteer Secretary to assist our Canungra Veterans Organisation in the fulfillment of our Charter. Potential Applicants do not have to be a member of the RSL Organisation, but do acknowledge the Aims and Principles of the RSL. Training will be available for this position, the Retiring Secretary has indicated she will assist the new applicant if assistance is sought. This invitation also applies to existing Sub Branch Members, who wish to be considered. For more details please contact the President David Day on Phone 0428 343 585.

Birdwatching in the Lockyer Valley Aphelocephala nigricincta

By Melissa Whitby Being unable to travel interstate and abroad, has made me look for areas closer to home to be able to go birdwatching. In the last year, my incredibly good friends Arthur and Sheryl Keates introduced me to the delights of birdwatching in the Lockyer/Brisbane Valley. My first foray with them was in May 2020, after our first lockdown was lifted. The first place that we ventured to was Pecheys Lagoon just outside Gatton. This particular location is known to be visited by bird species that are usually seen further inland. We were not disappointed with views of Diamond Doves, Black Falcons, Plum-headed Finches and Speckled Warbler. It is also a good place to observe a variety of common species such as Nankeen Kestrel, Little Corellas, Double-barred Finches and Striated Pardalotes. For anyone new to birding, this is a good place to see common species up close and to be able to take the time to identify the birds easily. The one thing to remember at this site is to stay on the road and not

to walk past fences onto private property. Our next stop is usually for morning tea at the Gatton Bakehouse. From Gatton, we then headed out towards Atkinsons Dam. Enroute it is worth keeping one’s eyes peeled on any wetland areas and looking in open areas for Banded Lapwings and Ground Cuckoo-Shrike. Atkinsons Dam is approximately 30 minutes from Gatton and is visited by a startling array of waterbirds throughout the year. The winter months see interesting visitors such as Freckled Ducks, Red-necked Avocets and Hoary-headed Grebes. Other waterbird species included Australasian Shovellers, Great Crested

Grebes and Glossy Ibis. The dam fringes are home to Golden-headed Cisticolas, Clamorous Reed-Warblers and Brown Quail. It is a place that sometimes you just never know what you will see! Lastly, during the winter months a visit to Lake Galletely at the University of Queensland – Gatton campus is a good place to be able to see Pink-eared Ducks and Blue-billed Ducks at close quarters. Since last year, I have done several birding forays into the area and I am still seeing different birds on each trip. I hope that I have inspired some who have read this article to head to the Lockyer/Brisbane Valley birding trail!

COMMENT

By Jon Krause STATE MEMBER SCENIC RIM

Accidents There have been a number of serious vehicle accidents in the Scenic Rim Electorate in the past couple of weeks and I want to take this opportunity to remind drivers to stay vigilant on the roads by obeying speed limits and driving to conditions – especially when travelling through school zones. Some of these accidents also highlight the gap between residential growth in the region on one hand and investment in new roads on the other – a long-term problem that I will continue to advocate about, along with your Council and local Councillor, who I often consult about these issues.

Events Cancelled

The tough decision was made to cancel both the Canungra and Beaudesert Shows and Canungra Rodeo for the second year in a row due to COVID-19 and the ongoing restrictions that would make it near impossible to run the events.

Buy Local

More than ever, our local producers, farmers and businesses need our support, not only for the jobs they provide but for the contribution that so many give back to our community through sponsorships and support for great causes – whether by donations to sporting clubs, other community activities or community service or-

ganisations. When you shop locally, your money stays local, with one dollar spent at a local business returning up to five times that amount through employee wages, rates and the purchase of materials and supplies. Let’s support those that support.

My Office

There’s a lot of things that need doing, building and investing in for our region, and I’m constantly fighting for our fair share. We need to keep making our voices heard – if you need any assistance with a Queensland Government matter, or to raise your concerns with me, please do not hesitate to contact my office – scenicrim@ parliament.qld.gov.au or phone 1800 813 960.

Local Groups Share in Grants

Three groups in Canungra and Beechmont will share in over $70,000 in funding from the Gambling Community Benefit Fund. Beechmont Tennis Club received $29,539 to purchase equipment and upgrade facilities. Canungra Show Society received $34,604 to repair the arena and floorboards in the pavilion. Canungra Sport and Recreation Reserve received $14,249 to install benches and seating. State Member for Scenic Rim, Jon Krause said the money would make a huge difference to the successful local groups. “This terrific outcome would not have occurred without many hardworking volunteers giving their time and energy to

complete the grant application process. It is wonderful to see that these community groups will be able to install and upgrade facilities to help them maintain their services.” “I commend these groups for the wonderful work they do and encourage other community groups to apply for further rounds of the GCBF next year. Notfor-profit groups can apply for grants from $500 to $35,000,” Mr Krause said. To apply for the program visit: www.justice. qld.gov.au/grants or for more information contact Jon Krause’s office via email scenicrim@parliament.qld.gov.au or phone (07) 5515 1100.

These are my own personal views. I do not purport to speak on behalf of Council.

Grants Council currently has active State and Federal grants totalling more than $57m. These grants are a much-needed relief to ratepayers as we can get more work done on roads and other infrastructure projects without using our rates budget. These grants however come with a strict criterion so we cannot move those funds to other projects. I encourage you all to check out the Council website for more information.

Roads and Bridges There has been much said about the condition of our roads and Council has a strong commitment

to fix and maintain our roads within our limited capital works budget. I have met with our Road Works officer and requested to look at having the upgrade of Veresdale Scrub Road in front of the Veresdale Scrub Hall brought forward in the Capital Works Plan as it is one of the worst sections of that road. Most times that I ask residents which road they have an issue with it turns out to be a State controlled road. I have posted on my Facebook page a link to the Main Roads in the Scenic Rim. I encourage you to contact the Dept of Main Roads at southcoast@tmr.qld.gov. au if you have any problems with a main road.

The Canungra Times – September 2021

It was great with the assistance of the neighbouring Logan Councillor Scott Bannon to re-open Tesse Bridge at Veresdale Scrub. This was a joint project with funding from the Federal Bridges Renewal program, Logan and Scenic Rim Councils. Hopefully the funding for the replacement of Freeman Bridge up the road will be soon. If you see any dumped items or dead kangaroos by the side of the road please call Council on 5540 5111 and report it.

Keeping our community looking clean and tidy is important.

Local Issues I am working on the following issues: • Veresdale Scrub School P&C with before and after school care options. • Gleneagle State School P&C with repairs and improvements to the school car park. • Tamborine Memorial Hall improvements. • Tamborine Mountain sports with facility upgrades.

corridor • Wildlife through Tamborine. • Vonda Youngman and Palomino Roads Tamborine speeding. • Intersection Karen Court Tamborine upgrade. • Leach Road upgrade outside Hardware store.

Today’s Thought “Lock up your libraries if you like; but there is no gate, no lock, no bolt that you can set upon the freedom of my mind.” Virginia Woolf, A Room of One’s Own

CONTACT ME I am always available to talk directly with residents by telephone on my mobile 0436 327 434 or email jeff.m@scenicrim.qld.gov.au. Follow me on Facebook – Jeff McConnell Councillor for Division 2 Scenic Rim Regional Council. I am happy to meet with anyone who requests a meeting. Page 33

News from St Luke’s By Di Ayscough

Spring is here and what does that mean to you? Beautiful weather, flowers blooming, birds singing. Spring brings a feeling of hope and happiness. The winter blues are lifting from our shoulders and we look forward to the future. I hope you feel good about yourself and about the future. We do still have COVID-19 fears, we do wait for the next lock down and wearing masks is protective, even if you never thought mask wearing would be part of daily lives. St Luke’s congregation always live in hope because we have great faith. What does that mean? It means we know God is the centre of our lives; we work together to maintain our faith and our church. It has been two years since our permanent Priest retired and since then we have had several Locum Priests. Each one has brought new ideas and a sense of ownership. Each one has been valued by us but more importantly they have loved St Luke’s. Our newest locum priest has arrived and Fr Harry Reuss is already a welcome addition. He is loving St Luke’s and we know he will help to keep our faith alive. We feel truly blessed. In a similar way we were blessed to welcome little Adaline May Bell when her parents and family brought her to baptism recently. We continue to develop “Little Lukies” so capably led by Jan Armstrong and we continue to fund raise to maintain St. Luke’s for our community. While we had to cancel our annual dinner again this year, St Luke’s will use every opportunity to be visible to the public, and show we are an important part of the community. More fundraising ideas will take place before the end of the year. St Luke’s is blooming; just like God’s gift of spring flowers. It is time to blossom.

Samuel is in the Black!

Assistant Grandmaster Rob Jenson presents Samuel Hall with his junior black belt.

Canungra’s ShimJang Taekwondo class has had its first black belt awarded to Samuel Hall. Samuel started learning Taekwondo at the age of five years, and said he was very pleased to achieve the rank of Junior Black Belt. The 14 year old was assessed on the Gold Coast by examiner Assistant Grandmaster Rob Jenson. In order to be awarded his black belt, Samuel had to demonstrate a complex pattern of Taekwondo moves, show strong self-defence skills and fighting skills against a number of opponents. Samuel’s instructor and mother, Sarah Hall said throughout the grading Samuel was able to demonstrate integrity and respect to his fellow students and examiners

whilst being watched by a crowd of spectators. “These skills are lifelong and will prove invaluable as he moves through life,” she said. Samuel was a blue belt when his family moved to Canungra three years ago and started the Canungra class. As a Junior Black Belt he will now be able to assist with instructing. “It has taken a lot of time and dedication to get to this level and I would like to thank everyone who has supported me, especially my Instructors and my Mum,” said Samuel. When he turns 16 he will be able to go for the Senior Black Belt where he would be fighting with adults in the examination. Sarah said all the Canungra students are assessed by an external ex-

aminer and currently the students attend a grading three times a year on the Gold Coast. They are all assessed by ShimJang Taekwondo’s Assistant Grandmaster Rob Jenson. “Each student needs to demonstrate their belt grade pattern, self defense skills and non contact sparring, showing skills of focus, awareness, spirit, perserverance and respect for others,” said Sarah. “All these skills are taught at the Canungra class.” Shimjang Taekwondo classes are held at Moriarty Park Hall every Monday and Thursday at 5.30pm to 6.30pm. A complimentary free trial is offered for new students. For more information visit shimjang.com or call Sarah Hall on 0431 089 738.

Sportsperson of the Month Awards With Bren Dalby

KAI CROTHERS

KAI CROTHERS – An amazing young man, only 12 years old, and having Cerebral Palsy, has taken Frame Running by the handlebars in an incredible way! With an impressive Silver medal winning performance at the Australian Track and Field Champion-

ships in Sydney and a new Australian record for his class, Kai was recently awarded the QLD Coles Athletics Community Hero for 2021. Kai is coached by Amy Tobin who is the founder of ‘Now I Can Run’ aiding children with disabili-

ties to be able to reach new heights and fulfill their dreams and aspirations by enabling access to racing wheelchairs and frames. We know we will be hearing much more about Kai’s successes and wish him well in what is sure to be an amazing future.

year. David Torrens from Grunt Fitness cannot speak highly enough about this young man, “level headed, cool, calm and collected and most importantly consistent in his rigorous training schedule”. Corey and his lovely lady Sam will be adding another gorgeous baby

to their growing family in October so there may be a little bit of down time for nappy changing and cuddles (in that order !!!) and then back into it to prepare for next big gig in March 2022. Good luck Corey and family with all imminent joys and successes.

Champion in 2019 and 2020; Athletics Champion in 2019; Representative in both Cross Country and Athletics at district level and regional level for high jump in 2019. To add to this Cooper has represented the school in AFL, touch

football, soccer and tackle rugby league! A super young all rounder who has recently been awarded the prestigious NAIDOC Sportsperson of the Year Award for the South East Region. Super well done Cooper; keep up the good work!

JAMES DOUGHERTY – From a family of terrific sportspeople, James is carrying on the successes with the same passion and determination we have seen from them over the years. He is an enthusiastic all rounder, but most excited about his recent selection in the Broadwater District Cricket Team.

This is exceptionally special as the passion for cricket is almost genetic in his family and to be able to excel in this way is marvellous. James plays soccer for Canungra Owls too and is an absolute pleasure to watch play. The consideration he shows to team mates, and his ability, for example, to pass the

ball to a player who may be in a better position to score than he is at that time, is a very unusual quality at this age and a skill that gains respect by all. In essence a super sportsperson in every sense. Any team in any code would be proud to have this super young man amongst them. Very well done James!

WILL HAMBLIN – An extremely talented Rugby League player, Will has attained success to a level most can only dream about – to be selected in the Queensland team! It is a tremendous achievement

to make the Regional team but due to dedication, hard work and a mammoth talent, Will made it to the Queensland squad together with only one other from the South East Queensland region. Sadly, the Nationals have been

cancelled due to COVID but look out for this young man next year and beyond! Great work Will; we are all very proud to see you getting this far already and much more to come !

COREY NICHOLSON

COREY NICHOLSON – Grunt Fitness, home of Canungra Muay Thai has helped produce yet another Champion Muay Thai fighter in this outstanding 24 year old. Corey was already the Bantam Weight World Champion when he took out the next division – Super Bantam Weight – World title in June this

COOPER MACKENZIE

COOPER MacKENZIE – Such an array of successes and awards for this extraordinary young man from which I will list a few to show just how versatile and talented Cooper is! Cooper attends Canungra State School and was Swimming Age
