Binna Burra Re-Opens

Binna Burra Lodge has reopened after 12 month of rebuilding following the September 2019 bushfires. The loss of the old lodge was a devastating blow not only to Binna Burra, but ecotourism across the Gold Coast Hinterland and Scenic Rim. State and Federal Governments have invested $2,775,000 into the lodge site and broader National Park, to restore the area to its former glory and rebuild trails. The road into Binna Burra was reopened on Monday 31st August, allowing public access into the Binna Burra side of Lamington National Park. On Tuesday 1st September, Binna Burra staff welcomed the first guests back into the Sky Lodges and Groom’s Cottage. A Bushfire Gallery will be opened on Tuesday 8th September 2020 to enhance understanding and reflection of the

Binna Burra Chairman, Steve Noakes, in the Bushfire Gallery located at the Barn.

September 2019 bushfire. The Gallery is designed as a mobile facility. Initially, it will be located on of the remaining heritage buildings, the Barn. Remnant machinery from the 1950s sawmill will be part of the Gallery’s internal and external exhibits. Binna Burra Chairman, Steve Noakes said the Gallery may be moved to another location, either on

Binna Burra land or in a suitable local community facility. “The re-opening has been the culmination of a team effort”, he said. “This re-opening marks a new era for Binna Burra, building on a legacy of bringing visitors closer to nature. It also contributes greatly to the economic recovery of the Beechmont community,” Mr Noakes said.

Council Welcomes Funding Boost for Public Amenities and Footpaths Improvements to footpaths and public amenities, including Sharp Park in Canungra, feature in funding for the Scenic Rim through the Queensland Government’s Unite and Recover Community Stimulus Package. Mayor Greg Christensen said Scenic Rim will receive $2 million for shovel-ready projects, which aimed to help the region

recover from the financial impacts of COVID-19 by creating employment opportunities and stimulating economic growth. “We welcome the Queensland Government’s funding for projects that will help create jobs in the short-term and provide social and economic benefits for our communities,” he said. “Funding of $1,195,000 will provide

Jamie Collects Master Builder Award Local pool builder, Jamie Bramich of JB Pool Construction, has received the Best Residential Swimming Pool award at the prestigious Housing & Construction Awards 2020. The award was received for a spectacular 17 metre pool constructed at a waterfront property in Sanctuary Cove. Based in Wonglepong, Jamie said the pool leaves nothing to chance. “With more than 110 000 litres of pool and pond water volume, 170 linear metres of perimeter, 140 square metres of water surface area, and 300 square metres of tiled interiors, this pool is state of the art,” said Jamie. “The main pool is the focal point for

indoor-outdoor entertaining at the rear of the property, where the infinity edge design provides unobstructed views to the river beyond.” “The pool is connected to a ‘tributary system’ of ponds, fountains and waterfalls that reach through the centre of the dwelling to the gatehouse, where they culminate as the focal point of the home’s entry.” With the aim of being as efficient and low maintenance as it is showstopping, the design involves automated cleaning systems with in-floor cleaning heads and six channel drains, making it one of the largest and most intricate residential in-floor cleaning systems in Australia.

Separating the indoor and outdoor ponds, there are four glass walls and two timber lattice and glass bridges. Underwater, six pool lights and 30

College Maintenance Manager Retires

Tamborine Mountain College Maintenance Manager, Michael Adams, has retired after 20 years of service. He has contributed significantly to the campus with its exceptional grounds and has been integral to the growth and success of the College. Michael has seen many changes to the College over the years: • College acquisition of lands and property. • Addition of Primary in 2015 to the Secondary Campus. • Addition of the Early Learning Centre in 2019. • Beautiful modern buildings and facilities. • Additional staffing to compliment the College’s growth.

Mrs Melbourne, the College Principal and the Chairman of the Board, Mr Michael Kyle, recognised Michael’s service with the naming of a small bridge designed and built by Michael years before, as a fitting “Rite of Passage” for Year 12 finishing College education. A watch and medal were also presented, followed by a special morning tea with College staff and luncheon to celebrate his contribution. It is truly a rarity these days for someone to remain in the same job for so many years – Michael certainly has displayed his loyalty and devotion to the College. He will be missed but never forgotten and will forever be part of the College family.

Fears for Wildlife on Coast Road

Motorcycle rubrail (lower panel on the guardrail) installed on Beaudesert-Nerang Road between Canungra and Mount Nathan has led to increased call outs for wildlife carers in the area. Wildlife carer, Bren Dalby said koalas and echidnas in particular have no way to get through the barriers. She is also worried that there is no where for carers to pull over safely if they are called out to rescue an animal. Member for Scenic Rim, Jon Krause said he did not understand why such a large and expensive project was undertaken on that stretch of road. “I’m as bewildered as many in the

community about the installation of this.“ “I wrote to TMR on 6th August asking for the reason behind it. There was no consultation from me or anyone in the community. I can’t understand why so much money would be spent there instead of Beaudesert-Nerang Road at Biddaddaba, which is gravel,” he said. A Transport and Main Roads spokesperson said the rubrail had been installed following safety audit in 2018 which showed Beaudesert–Nerang Road had a high rate of fatal and serious injury crashes. “Over the five-year period from July 2012 to June 2017, there were 68 reported incidents between

Wonglepong Road and Nerang–Murwillumbah Road,” she said. “It is mandatory to include motorcycle rubrail on all new guardrails to protect motorbike riders from sliding in between the guardrail beam and the ground in the event of run-off road crashes. It also reduces the

chance of impact with guardrail posts.” Additional guardrail will be installed at Mount Nathan. “There are breaks in the guardrail about every kilometre to accommodate vehicle breakdowns and due to the mountainous terrain, there is insufficient space to provide more pullover areas.”

“We are actively investigating options to assist wildlife, which remains a priority, but this needs to be balanced with the safety of road users, particularly motorbike riders.” “We will keep the community informed of our investigations as they progress.”

Rising from the Ashes - Fire Reflections In September 2019, Canungra and Beechmont experienced the worst bushfires in the area in living memory. Eleven homes were lost on Beechmont as well as the heritagelisted Binna Burra Lodge. In Canungra, residents in Illinbah and Sarabah fought fires for up to two weeks. Fortunately, no lives were lost, but the memory of what was the start of the ‘Black Summer’ still stays with those who experienced the fires.

clearing, new septic, three tanks was prohibitive. “The cost was insane,” she said. “Our cost to rebuild was heading towards $900,000, for a very simple three bedrooms.” They have since moved out of the area. “I’m still not happy our hand was forced,” she said. Kathleen added that the Beechmountain CWA and Canungra Op Shop had provided great support for the couple.

Caz and her husband Daz lost their garage in the fires when a tree came down on it. She said she first realised they might have to leave when a

local posted on Facebook for people to ‘think about leaving’, only 15 minutes before the official notification to leave came. Nervously, she grabbed what she could, but said it was bizarre what she took. “There was no time to check what I had,” she said, “I got our guitar amps, guitars, electric drum kit and a basket of clothes from the laundry. When we got the clothes out later on, I realised it was full of dress ups!” The next day she attended the community meeting in Canungra but hadn’t brought pen or paper to take notes or fill in forms. “We didn’t know if we had a house or not when we went to that meeting,” she said.

Caz Naudi created this garden outside her home.

Caz praised the leadership of Mayor Greg Christensen. “Greg did a good job of keeping everyone calm and informed. I

don’t know if anyone else would have done as good a job,” she said. “He spent a lot of hours there.”

Tony and Lisa Groom outside Groom’s Cottage.

Caz and Daz are still negotiating with their insurance company. She remains nervous about future fires, particularly when there is a westerly wind blowing, but says she found some peace in creating a garden at the base of the tree that destroyed their garage. “When we arrived home, the garage was unrecognisable, the big cyclonic beams were twisted ...

everything was gone,“ she said. Caz says the assistance they received after the fires from the Canungra Op Shop, Beechmountain CWA and GIVIT was invaluable. “Having water donated was a big thing for us. When we got back after the fires our tank water had to be tested, so having donated water to drink was great,” she said.

by Lisa Groom Not that long ago, life felt greener, lush and normal before the dry westerly winds picked up pace, while brave firefighters gathered in growing numbers. From Sarabah to Witheren, the fire-storm grew then leapt across the Coomera River in Illinbah Valley to arrive on our Beechmont doorstep on Friday 6 September. Timbarra Drive lost eight houses that night – the first of thousands over Australia’s Black Summer Mother Nature took homes away but thankfully no lives on Beechmont. With the still-roaring winds, we return to our street in muted shock. Survivor guilt as we cry over neigbour’s houses lost, close calls, burned sheds & tree falls. And the poor wildlife is reeling too – birds don’t sing for a while. Roadblocks protect us from prying eyes but the gates must open eventually… …to insurance assessors, electricians, tree loppers, politicians …the media and weekend drive-by disaster tourists. Finally, my family and I travel up to Binna Burra on a road that looks like a bomb blast from a war zone. Gasping at the view to the hilltop lodge - forever changed. 86 years of memories ringing in the rubble of the clifftop dining room, library, reception and cabins It’s harder still to see my childhood family home and my nana’s cottage – a tangled mix of metal, molten glass and rock wall skeletons. And yet, here we are a year later… rebuilding, reconnecting, marvelling at what has survived and still mourning on other days. This past year has felt like an eternity and a blink in time but onwards we walk!

Rising from the Ashes - Fire Reflections Damon Rockliff

First Officer of Canungra RFS, Damon said the Canungra RFS Brigade is stronger than ever. “We had eight new members go through training and another two going through soon,” he said. “So we have an additional 10-12 people in the brigade who are trained.” “We are a very strong brigade at this point.” A Polaris vehicle and a portable dam has been added to the brigade’s equipment, however Damon says they still need an additional vehicle. Damon urged residents to prepare better for this fire season. “We need people to clean up their properties and to make sure they get permits for any burns,” he said.

Lynn Porter with some of the people who helped with horse evacuations and donations of livestock feed during the fires.

Lynn Porter (Horse Rescue)

Chief Steward of the Canungra Show Horse events, Lynn Porter, was one of a team of people who evacuated 147 horses, 93 cattle and 14 alpacas over the course of the fires. Lynn said she still can’t believe what happened.

“The start of it was a Facebook post from someone saying they needed to get their horses out,” she said. “I didn’t have a float, I just put a call out for one and then we started evacuating to the Showgrounds.” “From then on it was a roller coaster.” Lynn described trying to load a mare and foal on Beechmont

as one of the scariest moments during that time. “It was at night and the lights and sirens from the emergency services vehicles were scaring the horses,” she said. “We were trying to get the mare and foal in the truck when we saw the fire come up over the hill - we just had to get them in there any way we could.” Lynn says she felt like she didn’t sleep for five days, but didn’t hesitate when asked what she would do under similar circumstances. “Would I do it again? In a heartbeat.”

Steve Moriarty (Sarabah)

A rural firefighter, Steve helped with back burning on Thursday 5th September

but said Friday 6th September was chaos. “The fire was unpredictable. We were in drought, with no grass and flames rolling along on the bare ground,” he said. Steve stayed to defend his home, and said it is hard to know whether it would have been there had he left. “For the next three months we had no rain, so we were hand feeding cattle and horses because there was nothing but ash on the ground.” Steve said the bushfire funding Scenic Rim Regional Council received and money donated to NSW RFS could be better utilised to assist people who were fire affected or to improve fire trails and for bushfire planning for communities.

“It is disappointing to hear reports of government funds that were intended for bushfire recovery being siphoned off for other projects, and that there are apparently millions of dollars donated to bushfire victims still being held in charities 12 months on,” he said.

Cr Virginia West

Cr West said recovery is not over. “Everyone is at a different stage of recovery and we need to be mindful of that fact, and of each other,” she said.

Greg Christensen (Mayor)

Cr Christensen was emotional speaking about the fires. “I still choke up about it,” he said. “For me it was very personal. It is only from the incredible efforts from east to west from volunteers as well as structured QFES, that our community was kept safe.” “I started last fire season in a conversation with QFES and QPS where we all understood we were

Beechmountain CWA

These angels of the mountain were invaluable from the beginning of the fires through the recovery. Although they had only become a fully fledged branch of the CWA a few months prior, the group had been operating as a sub-branch for some time and was able to mobilise members quickly to support the firefighters and people who were evacuated.

Beechmountain CWA Acting President, Amanda Harrison, said their members went into action as soon as the fires started, providing food and support for Beechmont Rural Fire Brigade. “We had people there all the time,” she said, “When it was clear it was going for days we started a roster.” The Beechmountain CWA provided assistance throughout recovery, concentrating their efforts on people who had lost their homes.

HUMANS CANUNGRA

of

Josh Bell-McNee By Keer Moriarty Photography by Katherine O’Brien Photography

In 2010, Josh Bell-McNee underwent surgery and treatment for a life-threatening brain tumour. In 2013, he was Tamborine Mountain High School’s School Captain and in 2014 he was awarded Scenic Rim’s Young Citizen of the Year for raising funds for cancer research. Here, this extraordinary young man talks about his lifelong passion for his art.

So tell me about your artistic side? I studied Drama, Film and TV at university and I wanted to do something with that but its hard ... it’s not an easy thing to make money off. So I juggle a few jobs while I’m working on it. What are you working on now? I recently finished the planning for a two series children’s TV show. Sort of a scaffolding for every episode. You have a spark of an idea and build off that. I had this idea about three years ago and have built on that. Outside of that it is more pencil and paper kind of thing. As in drawing? Yes, I’m not talented in any way, but it is something I like doing. What age is the TV show aimed at? It is aimed at young teens but the idea for any art is to have a broader appeal for a large group of people to be able to enjoy it. Shrek is a really good example there’s so much innuendo, but you don’t realise until you rewatch the film at an older age. So that was in idea you had three years ago? Yes. One of the important things of artistic development is to not block yourself.

Page 12

The more you say to yourself ‘that’s stupid’, the more ideas go by the wayside. That’s my life... Well it kind of is until you open yourself up and allow things to happen. For me, it started with a small idea, an image, and I thought ‘that’s a really cool idea’. I knew I wanted to work with dreams, because I’ve always been interested in the psychology of that. So that one image and something with dreams, slowly became something a lot stronger. How does that fit in with day to day life? It’s like anyone, we all have varying interests and sometimes people forget and get lost in the day to day drag of things. Part of it is trying to keep exercise up, go to work, make my bed, eat the right food... once all of that’s over then you can have these moments where you can squeeze these things in. It ends up being a lot of half hour sessions drawing a picture that comes into your head. Then you end up with a portfolio eventually. So with the film and TV, you draw a lot of those ideas? Yes, part of what makes it difficult is I’m not that good at drawing. If I work

Josh Bell-McNee. through that, the picture is always stronger in your head. I can’t draw a stick figure so ... I was always one of those drawing illiterate people. For this project I had to make it happen. I would look at a picture online and copy it. I created a page the show Rick and Morty and worked on the characters. I worked my way through those thoughts of ‘you’re not very good’. If you can get past that stage you start to believe in yourself. It is just a voice that’s been stopping your from doing it. If it only means something to you then that’s enough, and that is what I work on.

The City Comes to the Country

The cancellation of the EKKA saw some Scenic Rim businesses offer great events to entice visitors to the region. Unable to travel to Brisbane to promote their wares, Greenlee Farm and Sarabah Estate held events on the same day, coordinating a farm tour at Greenlee with lunches

and the famous EKKA Strawberry Sundae available at the nextdoor Sarabah Estate. Sarabah Estate also held a Beef, Burger and Bull rodeo style event with a mechanical bull during the evening. Visitors came from Brisbane, Gold Coast and across the Scenic Rim to attend these events.

Support So The Shows Can Go On

The Australian Government has announced a $2.7 million boost for agricultural field days to ensure they can continue to showcase innovation and support regional communities after the pandemic. Federal Member for Wright Scott Buchholz has welcomed the support for regional ‘field days’, building on previous support announced to help local show societies that had to cancel in 2020 due to the Coronavirus pandemic. Mr Buchholz said agricultural shows and field day events play a vital role in the Scenic Rim community and economy. “It is very disappointing for all of us that many of our great local shows in the Scenic

Page 16

Rim have not been able to go ahead this year due to the coronavirus pandemic.” “This Federal Government support is about helping our show societies to ensure the show can go on. We want to make sure shows are there on the other side, so volunteers, exhibitors and local residents can look forward to and attend future shows,” Mr Buchholz said. “I know the importance of our local shows and strongly believe in ensuring they’re supported in the tough times and the good times. “They’re important to our community, our economy and in ensuring the benefits and critical importance of rural and regional

areas are known,” Mr Buchholz said. Earlier this year, the Government committed $36 million to support agricultural show societies to recover from the effects of COVID-19. “This announcement builds on that funding, helping our agricultural shows and field days into the future, easing the immediate cash flow pressures and providing assistance for the fixed costs associated with cancellations in 2020,” said Mr Buchholz. “We know that agricultural shows contribute around $1 billion to the Australian economy each year. “Locally, here in the Scenic Rim our shows such as Canungra, on Tamborine Mountain, in Boonah, Kalbar and Beaudesert, attract

thousands of people to the region. That supports the show society and all of the associated businesses, from rides, food vendors and of course stall holders,” Mr Buchholz said.

Mr Buchholz said it is anticipated that applications will open via the Community Grants Hub in September 2020, with payments commencing soon afterwards.

Fire Ants Found in Canungra

Residents are asked to inspect their backyards after fire ants were found in Canungra recently. A spokesperson from the National Red Imported Fire Ant Eradication Program said fire ant nests have recently been found and destroyed in Canungra. “The nests were reported by members of the public and program field teams carrying out targeted surveillance in the area,” the spokesperson said. “We have checked all properties within 500 metres of each nest found and treated them with combination of fire ant bait and/ or liquid insecticide. “We have also taken samples of the nests for genetic testing.”

“We’ll do further surveillance around the area to make sure there aren’t any more.” The spokesperson said these findings are not cause for alarm. The aim of the program’s winter surveillance is to assess fire ant spread, through human-assisted movement and flight. “This year’s surveillance program is more rigorous than ever before. We have more monitoring sites than previous years and more teams on the ground checking for signs of the super pest,” he said. “We ask the community to remain vigilant and check their yard.” First detected in the Brisbane area in February 2001, fire ants pose a serious social,

The Canungra Times – September 2020

economic and environmental threat. They are a category 1 restricted pest under the Biosecurity Act 2014, so landholders must report suspected sightings on their property to Biosecurity Queensland or they may face heavy fines. Residents who find fire ants should report them online at daf.qld. gov.au/fire ants or call 13 25 23. If fire ants are suspected, residents can either purchase fire ant bait, hire a pest manager or wait for the program to respond.

What to look for - Fire ant nests • Often appear as dome-shaped mounds • Can be up to 40cm high, but may also be flat and look like a small patch of disturbed soil • Are usually found in open areas such as lawns and pastures and along roadsides and unused cropland • Can also be found in potted plants, soil, under landscape materials, timber, overgrown areas and around water sources

Camera Club Ready to Shoot

The Beaudesert Camera Club, like many other clubs, has been in limbo since February due to COVID-19. Club Member, Sue Rodwell said the Club has continued to keep in touch with members through their monthly photography critiques online. “This has helped to keep club members in touch, and also helped them continue to improve their photographic skills,” said Sue. “We hope to re-commence monthly meetings very soon.” To further encourage members, the club held its annual Tom Moon Memorial Car Rally on Sunday 16th August. “We were delighted to see 15 members attend,” said Sue. “Members had to find their way from Beaudesert to the Tommerup’s Dairy Farm in

Kerry by following photographic clues.” “I’m glad to say we didn’t lose anyone along the way! Once there, we gathered for a social picnic and tour of the farm.” Keen photographers who are interested in joining the Beaudesert Camera Club can contact Sue Rodwell by email to sue_rodders@ hotmail.com.

Expressions of Interest for Town Crier Scenic Rim Regional Council is calling for Expressions of Interest for a new town crier who can fill the honorary shoes of an important character in the region. Scenic Rim Mayor Greg Christensen said this is an exciting opportunity for anyone who has aspired to take up the art of town crying. “The role of the town crier dates back to the 18th century and was originally considered the chief communicator of their area,” Cr Christensen said. “We will be looking for an individual who has immense pride in the Scenic Rim region, has a big voice and is enthusiastic and has a fun disposition to keep the community entertained and engaged. “The town crier is an honorary position that helps promote the Scenic Rim region, as well as attending

and participating in many events and activities across the region.” Town criers may perform: Opening festivals and special events e.g. Citizenship Ceremonies Lead parades and processions Welcome delegations and dignitaries Attend civic events Master of Ceremonies, and Participate in the National Australian Town Criers Championships. In order to become the next town crier, and subsequently a member of the Ancient and Honourable Guild of Australian Town Criers, the appointee needs a formal endorsement from Council. More information about the expressions of interest to apply for the town crier role will be advertised and released on Council’s website.

Canungra State School Happenings Mural By Piper Fletcher CSS Cadet Reporter. After many years of a bullseye on the wall in the 5s and 6s eating area, there is a new mural decorating this area. Mrs Todhunter’s daughter Alana has painted the prettiest painting, a sunset with a little house on the left hand side. Hopefully it will stay on our wall for all to see and all who visit our school for a very long time.

Prep Enrolment 2021

Refurbishment

of

Sunshine Room

Canungra State School has been lucky enough to secure state government funding for an extensive refurbishment of the Sunshine Room. The Sunshine room houses our support and learning enhancement team and provides a play space for children who prefer inside games during breaks. We are thrilled to have received this funding and are working with the project team to design a flexible, inviting space for students with adequate office space for staff. We are hoping to include a kitchenette for life skills lessons. The refurbishment should commence in early December.

In BAD Company

Beechmont Amateur Drama Company, known as BAD Company, has restarted after a 14 year hiatus. The theatre company was active in the Beechmont community from 1992 until 2006. BAD Company members, Lou Rankin and Kim Crow said the plays brought the community together in the past, something they are hoping will happen again. “We feel now is definitely the right time to get it going again,” said Kim. “Our community could benefit from having things to look forward

to and to feel that the old Beechmont is not gone all together.” “We have received lots of positive feedback from residents who remember BAD Company’s previous productions.” In February, Lou and Kim held an information night, to gauge interest in restarting BAD Company. “We decided the best way to do this would be under the Beechmountain CWA, as many of the interested group are members,” said Lou. “The CWA welcomed us with open arms, and we were ready to go. COVID-19 put a stop

to that, but during that time we were able to access some funding via Scenic Rim Council and the Federal Government Bushfire Recovery funding arrangements.” “So, we are going to try again. We will start off small and are working toward performing some short skits later this year or early next year,” said Kim. For more information about BAD Company, contact Lou Rankin on 0418 759 988 or by email to walla@winshop.com. au.

‘Regeneration’ - Creating Community Connection Through Art

‘Regeneration’ is a creative project developed to support community recovery on Beechmont. A regeneration day was hosted after the September 2019 bushfires to discuss bush care, create art, share stories and allow residents to support each other. This event revealed the collective emotions of shock, grief and trauma after the devastating events that saw homes, Binna Burra Lodge and the treasured Lamington National Park destroyed. Emerging from that day, the idea for a creative project was developed to support community recovery. This has turned into the ‘Regeneration’ - Creative

Empowerment Project, which has secured funding to create artworks that tell a collective story and invite healing through the process. ‘Regeneration’ Creative Empowerment Project and will be coordinated by Beechmont resident and community arts and cultural development worker Jessica Brown. It is jointly funded by Scenic Rim Regional Council Bushfire Recovery Fund, Commonwealth/ State Disaster Recovery Funding and CommBank Bushfire Recovery Grant. Professional and emerging artists will be invited to engage community members to collaborate on murals, exhibitions,

publications and various art projects across Beechmont and fire affected communities in the Scenic Rim. The project will be run through the Little Pocket, a grassroots association based in Beechmont, with the purpose of connecting the community together.

The Beechmont Area Progress Association (BAPA) is a community organisation which administers the iconic Old School site at the Beechmont roundabout. This includes The Headmasters Cafe (trading as Binna Burra Kitchen), demountable used for community functions, Op Shop and community garden and orchard.

After a devastating year, BAPA is growing from strength to strength with plans for: • On-site infrastructure improvements, • Focus/lobby group formation to seek improved NBN services for the area, • Denham Reserve access, • C o m m u n i t y garden and market upgrades among other projects. Watch out also for the BAPA Big Bash

music event with live bands and food being planned. Residents are invited to the next BAPA meeting on Monday 14th September at 7pm in the demountable. Be be part of this amazing community and discover for yourself what BAPA is all about! It only costs $5 per year to join BAPA and be a part of a new Beechmont recovery energy.

Disaster Dashboard

As we reflect on last year’s fires and the upcoming summer weather patterns, I urge all residents to have this site saved as a favourite on your phone or device so it is easily accessible when required. The site includes a wealth of useful information on COVID- 19 updates, emergency contacts, weather and road updates, community recovery information, fire dangers and more. To access this incredibly valuable site go to www.disasterdashboard.scenicrim. qld.gov.au.

Parking Issues

I know as local residents we are all feeling the pressure of increased visitor numbers to our beautiful town week after week, however this is so beneficial to our retailers who are now

recouping their loss from last year’s fire and continuing drought. The Canungra Chamber of Commerce and Council are very focused on this issue and have taken a walk around town with myself and Council officers looking at signage and possible solutions in the short-term and the long-term. A move that would be helpful is to remind all shop owners and their staff to please consider parking in the School of Arts Carpark in Pine St to free up parking for visitors in the main street.

Bushfire Recovery Officer

As part of the Australian and Queensland Government Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements, a very engaging and empathetic social worker has been employed for a two year period to work with the Canungra and Beechmont communities to assist with building

resilience, referral pathways, education support and mental health wellbeing. A year on from the bushfire event can bring to the fore so many emotions we never thought we would feel and this is very normal and expected. Ana will be around in our community as of the next few weeks and brochures will be distributed with more information. She will have a weekly base in both Canungra and Beechmont and wants to meet with families, individuals, schools, business and tourism operators, stakeholders and community groups to support your mental wellbeing and foster resilience and recovery. Contact details for Ana are telephone 0428 057 188 or email MHdisasterrecovery@ health.qld.gov.au.

The Truth About Your Glutes!

ASK THE PHYSIO Have you ever been told your glutes are going to ‘sleep’ because you are sitting too much? This idea is that your glutes don’t ‘turn on’ properly so they have become weak. You would be told that you need to ‘activate’ your glutes and that they would never be strong unless you learnt to switch them on properly. There is neither good evidence nor a reasonable explanation for this. In fact, if your glutes were not firing properly, it would mean you either have something like a spinal cord injury or a neurological disease. You would struggle to get up from a chair or walk up stairs! You would walk in a very awkward ungainly fashion!

By Alison Ford

Why is this even an issue?

Some people argue it is a harmless explanation and results in people just doing more glute exercises, which you would think is good. Right? Wrong! Instead of empowering people and encouraging them to improve their health and fitness, it causes people to overly focus on one muscle group, rather than focussing on compound movements involving multiple muscle groups and functional movements of the whole body. Most people are short on time and I have seen many people spend their whole workout in gyms on activation exercises from their physio, rather than compound exercises, which will

strengthen multiple muscle groups at the same time. These exercises have more positive effects on your body such as improved bone density, coordination, balance and overall functional health. Being told you have a weak glute, especially if on one side only, can be adding to

a list of issues that you may already have when they leave a healthcare practitioner. Physios can be very good at finding biomechanical faults and on the whole this is a good thing but saying your glutes aren’t firing is not a scientific evidence-based observation and can actually have a negative impact

causing fear and even pain. So if you are struggling to strengthen your glutes because you’ve been told they are weak, ask your physio about doing total body strengthening exercises, which will include all of your buttock muscles but no single small muscle in isolation!

MOTORING NEWS Lee McKenzie-McKinnon Subaru Impreza 2.0i-S Hatch by Editor, carandbikenews.com.au

The fifth-generation Impreza arrived in Australia in December 2016 as an all-new model. It was given Lane Keeping Assist as a standard, EyeSight function in late 2017 and in February 2020 received a facelift. The top specification Impreza is the 2.0i-S and the hatch starts at $35,300 plus the dealer and on-road costs. This is also $210 more than the sedan in the same specification. One thing the Subaru brand is committed to is allwheel drive across its range. Where their competitors benefit from selling front-drive cars for less, if you want that extra bit of safety the AWD does it. The engine available with the Subaru Impreza is a 2.0-litre petrol four-cylinder.

When teamed with the continuously variable automatic transmission, it uses about 7.0 litres per 100km. While the small sedan and hatch is being out-sold by SUVs, there is a market for them and the hatch is decent looking and packed with goodies. The 2.0i-S comes standard with 18-inch alloy wheels, heated and power-folding wing-mirrors, a sunroof, full LED front lighting, dual-zone climate control, rainsensing wipers, leather upholstery, and heated front seats with eightway power adjust on the driver’s side. On the multimedia front there’s a 8.0-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android auto, DAB+ digital radio, Bluetooth connectivity and

Subaru Impreza 2.0i-S Hatch

built-in nav, with a sixspeaker audio system. The interior is nicely finished, with highquality soft-touch plastics and tasteful matte or chrome highlights. The steering wheel has a nice feel but is very F1ish with the amount of buttons; I counted 15 before losing interest.

Often in a hatch the rear seat passengers get forgotten and there is barely enough room to take a Shih Tzu. However Subaru have given excellent amounts of room. There’s plenty of room for knees, plus the seats and doors are finished in plush matching leather trim.

When on the road the Impreza feels poised and fluid from behind the wheel, pushing crisply into bends with fine support at the rear from its sophisticated double-wishbone suspension. Grip levels are high, and the more you ask of the car the more you respect its abilities.

Canungra’s History -

The First Canungra Show By Joyce Libke Early in 1938 a public meeting was called and the Canungra Agricultural, Horticultural and Industrial Show Society was formed -- affiliated with A H & I Societies elsewhere. The first show was held on Saturday 10th September 1938 with the society members so enthusiastically supporting the endeavour that a pavilion was built, the dressing shed upgraded and that first official show reads like a “who’s who” of the district. Credit should be given to Arthur (A J) Caswell who, as an experienced exhibitor of pedigree A I S (Australian Illawarra Shorthorns) cattle for many years throughout South Eastern Queensland, was the founding President – a position he held until 1954. At the 1939 show, people who were present, remember that proceedings were interrupted by the announcement of the outbreak of WW 2 and Australia’s immediate involvement. Both the 1940 and 1941 shows shared the profits between the Show Society and Patriotic Funds. From 1942 to 1945 the Army took over the Canungra Hospital on the hill overlooking the Sports ground to use as a Military Hospital in conjunction with the Army Training Centre. They also used the Sports Ground area and buildings as an extension of that Hospital. The pavilion was their ‘isolation’ ward. After the war was over, the Army vacated the hospital and the Prisons Department removed the buildings. The Sports Ground Trustees, Keith Howard and Ken Curtis began negotiations to have this vacant land attached to the Sports Ground. On 25 March 1950 a properly constituted meeting of residents and ratepayers passed unanimously that, as a gift, they were entitled to receive the land. It has since become a welcome parking area during large events such as Show Day, Campdrafts Page 28

Well, it will be interesting times ahead with nine confirmed cases of COVID-19 now in the South East with several Council areas given Restricted Areas Direction. Let us hope that everyone applies a bit of common sense and follows a few simple rules that we should all do during Flu season; Wash your hands,

cover your mouth when coughing and sneezing and see a doctor if you are sick. The days of toughing it out and going to work are over. Stay home if you are sick. I have had an interesting month doing my Councillor duties. Assisting residents with issues is one of the most rewarding aspects of the job. This month I have helped residents with the initial contact with Council, remembering

that I am not a Customer Service Officer so most times I am only able to direct residents to the correct way to correspond with Council. We have some fantastic staff who work hard to ensure that residents are looked after. Our bridges program will soon see the completion of Cavell Bridge on Boyland Road, Boyland. This bridge was replaced at a cost of $1.8m using a 50/50

cost sharing grant with the Federal Government. You would have all seen the works being carried out cleaning the sides of the roads and drains around Tamborine. This is a scheduled clean but is timely given the weather gods have predicted a La Nina climate pattern for the coming wet weather season. This will mean a wetter than average season this year.

Lets just hope that Mother nature spreads it out this season and does not give it all to us in a day.

CANUNGRA RSL SUB-BRANCH By David Day, President, Canungra RSL Sub Branch

Veterans Day

Once again the Organisers of Veterans Day, held on 15th August, excelled themselves to conduct a very successful Memorial Service. Over 50 Veterans and their Partners turned up for the Service as well as Citizens from Canungra and Visitors. Vietnam Veterans Day has been renamed ‘Veterans Day’ in Canungra in recognition of all who have served in the Australian Military Forces since World War 2. The main address was delivered by Colonel Arran Hassell, CSC, Commandant, Kokoda Barracks, thanking those who have served with

special mention to the latest Victoria Cross recipient, awarded posthumously by Queen Elizabeth 11, Seaman Edward ‘Teddy’ Sheean, aged 18 years, who went down with his ship, HMAS Adelaide. I would like to make mention that over the past decade, Canungra has seen a number of our talented youth, join the Services by enlisting or through the ‘GAP’ year program. All have been posted to various units and are enjoying their challenges, congratulations to all. Photos courtesy Cr Jeff McConnell. Top: Col Lee and David Day. By Jon Krause, State Member, Scenic Rim Water Security

In the aftermath of Canungra running out of water last year, I urged Seqwater to re-examine plans for water storage around Canungra. The former Beaudesert Shire Council in around 2006 had developed plans for storage, but when responsibility for water was taken away from local councils, they never saw the light of day again. We need better water supply, especially if more and more homes are connected to the ‘town water’. Trucking water into Canungra is far from ideal. I know there is also concern out there about the continuing addition of new residential land to Canungra’s town. While I am generally in favour of growth, the fact is our water supply assets cannot keep up. If the LNP is elected to Government at the upcoming election, I will be pushing the new Government to put a ‘freeze’ on new residential zones around Canungra – so what is already residential zoned land will remain so, but new land will not be added to that zone – until this issue is resolved (not to mention the roads, and Main Roads refusal to put a Canungra bypass on the agenda – something else that need to change).

Covid 19

With dry conditions continuing, please continue to conserve water as much as possible around Canungra.

Roadworks

I’ve heard the concerns of many around Canungra about the lowerlevel guardrail installed on Beaudesert Nerang Road through ‘the Gorge’. These concerns were raised with Main Roads, who explained that type of installation is now part of their standard. Main Roads also stated they were investigating options to address people’s concerns about wildlife. I find it difficult to understand how a $4.9 million spend between Wonglepong and Mount Nathan was prioritised by Main Roads over other work. Beaudesert Nerang Road at Biddaddaba is an obvious issue – be it the gravel stretch, the culvert or the narrow, cracked, bumpy road all the way back to Tabragalba. Main Roads has obviously decided not to spend a dollar on those stretches, and that is not good enough. It must be one of the worst roads in southeast Queensland. This is on the (ever growing) list I have of issues to be fixed in the future. I’ll keep on fighting for our fair share when it comes to roads. Quick question? SMS 0401 63 44 88.

NATURE’S GEMS

White-eared Monarch (Carteronis Leucotis)

By Melissa Whitby South-east Queensland is home to a number of bird species that many people never get to see. One such bird is the White-eared Monarch. This small bird spends most its time in the treetops which adds to its elusive nature. The White-eared Monarch have distinctive black and white markings, which make them look similar to a smaller version of a Magpie-Lark. Male and female birds look similar with the female being slightly duller in colour. In South-east Queensland, there is no other bird species that White-eared Monarchs can be mistaken for. The best way to locate birds in suitable habitat is to be familiar with their calls. In my experience, Whiteeared Monarchs tend to spend significant time in particular habitats that suits them, frequently in rainforest edges/regrowth.

Once sighted, these small birds can be very active when chasing insects but will perched occasionally to call. They are usually seen singly or in pairs. Breeding season for White-eared Monarchs are usually spring and summer months. The nest is placed high in the canopy and is incredibly hard to see. The range of the White-eared Monarch extends along coastal areas from Cape York through to northern New South Wales. Throughout their range, they are relatively uncommon but are resident in areas where suitable forest is not disturbed even if it is regrowth. For anyone wishing to see this bird species, I would first suggest become familiar with its call. Then, head to Lamington National Park to find suitable habitat that the birds may frequent. As mentioned, rainforest margins are the best place to start.

White-Eared Monarch. Photo: Melissa Whitby.

Luckily for me, I have grown up with the birds and have several locations around Canungra area where I see them regularly. For any birdwatcher who is learning, to come across this bird is really something. Even for someone like myself who has been bird watching for years, the best views that I have had have only been recently. Such is the wonder of bird watching, one never stops learning!!

AWL Pets of the Month Mr Marilyn

Eight year old Mr Marilyn is looking for a quiet and loving retirement home to settle in to. He lived with a dog, another cat and children in his previous home, and the other cat was his best friend! If you have another cat at home, he may warm up to them and enjoy their company so much so that they may become the best of friends. The dog in the home was also pretty old and calm, which Mr Marilyn really appreciated. He may best suit a home with older kids, as he really appreciates the quiet and relaxing time to himself. Mr Marilyn had an outdoor enclosure in his previous home, which allowed him to explore outside and enjoy the sunshine - this is ideal for cats as it provides a safe and enriching environment for them. Once Mr Marilyn is settled in his new home, he is sure to be very affectionate and grateful you have chosen him to be apart of your family. Name Change for Botanic Gardens The members of Tamborine Mountain Botanic Gardens Inc voted to change the name of the Gardens during the association’s Annual General Meeting last month. The motion to change the name to include “significant reference to the Scenic Rim” while retaining the words “Tamborine Mountain” was accepted without dissent. The final structure of the name will be determined by the committee of the association. The meeting also elected a new committee that includes most members of the previous committee. Diana Fenton, Paul Marshall and Debi Marshall announced their decision to stand down from the committee in the months before the meeting. The new committee includes Denby Browning (President), Margaret Pile (Secretary), Gregory Ingold (Treasurer), Brian Davison (Curator), Rob Howard, Geoff Hurling,

Amrat Parbhu, Sandy Silabon and Nigel Waistell. Greg Ingold and Amrat Parbhu join the committee for the first time. Speaking to the name change motion, Denby Browning said that the Gardens are “much bigger than a local botanic garden”. He said that the Gardens are registered with BGANZ (Botanic Gardens Australia and New Zealand Inc) as a regional botanic garden. “That means we are a garden for our entire region,” he said. “The need to change the name is to reflect that broader view of who we are and why we want to tell the world that we are a significant regional botanic garden while retaining the identity with the Mountain.” Supporting the motion, Sandy Silabon said the change indicated a “coming of age, of recognising how important this place is.”

Common Blue-banded Bee Amegilla cingulata

The Common Blue-banded Bee is a regular visitor to urban gardens, forests, woodlands and heath. It attracts the eye because of its hovering, darting flight and the beautiful, turquoise blue bands running across its black abdomen. Close examination reveals even more beauty, gold and white fluff, luminous green eyes and crisp diaphanous wings. It can be found throughout most of Queensland. Once thought to only visit blue and purple flowers, it is now known they seem to like lavender and, according to the Australian Museum, are attracted to blue objects, including clothing. The Common Blue-banded Bee burrows into soil or crevices in rocks, making a solitary nest. Though solitary, many nests are often found close to one another. It also likes mud-brick houses and often burrows into the mortar in old buildings. Cell tunnels contain an egg at the terminal end with a meal of mixed pollen and nectar stored for the emerging larva. They do not swarm and they do not sting. Of further interest is ‘buzz pollination’. Blue-banded bees are one of a select bee species that ‘buzz pollinate’. By grasping the flower and shaking with the whole bee body, very rapidly, the pollen-bearing anthers as well as the flower vibrate.

By Susan Cully

The Common Blue-banded Bee

This causes the pollen to be set free from the anther and collected by the bee to spread about, resulting in fertilisation and fruit development. This is an essential service for common crops we depend on: tomatoes, blueberries, cranberries, kiwi fruit, eggplants and chilies. The common western honey bee (Apis mellifera), is incapable of performing this process. For this reason, the Blue-banded Bee is valuable to Australian farmers. Beautiful portraits of this bee can be found searching ’Bluebanded Bee a native beauty’ australiangeographic.com.au The Website: npqsuncoast.org is a very useful reference when choosing native plants to attract bees to your garden

News from St Luke’s By Di Ayscough I read with interest Keer’s recent editorial about finding solutions and her words made me stop and think. Keer said, Canungra’s population is predicted to grow substantially over the next few years and a major problem appears to be parking. What will work? We need to pool ideas and see if we can come up with a good solution. Do you have a problem or two, or many, and you do not know how to solve them? Maybe you find talking to a friend or family member will help solve your concerns. Maybe you just do not know where to turn. I am sure you can solve your problem more easily than you might think. St. Luke’s Anglican church is a really good place to start. Why not bring your problems along and see what can be done? Firstly, there are friendly people who will welcome and listen to you. If you read Karen MacAndrew’s story in the August edition of the Canungra Times, it was when people said “Hello” to her that made her feel welcome in Canungra. St Luke’s will definitely make you feel welcome. St Luke’s is a place of worship and prayer. You would be free to pray for your own needs, and you could join in the prayers of the church and for the community. Fr Ken would be very willing to help you find the solutions you need. My neighbour recently asked me to pray for the needs of her family. She said “I’m not a church person” but there she was seeking God for a solution. There are no barriers at St Luke’s but there are many opportunities to solve your problems. While the parking is a problem for Canungra, we have ample space for you in our church, why not come along to St. Luke’s where there are no traffic hold-ups, just a direct route to enjoying friendships and finding God.

Moriarty Park News Thank you to Scenic Rim Regional Council for replacing our roof which had slipped into a poor state of repair due to the tubing required to heat the pool. We hope this will tide us over until perhaps we can source a grant for a solar system to accommodate both the pool and Moriarty Park; got a few projects to go prior to that though!

Skate Park

I have had several terrific emails from a number of enthusiastic ‘want to be involved’ locals regarding the skate park project so I am very hopeful we can give this a solid run this time. Keep the interest coming please!

Mowing and Maintenance

A mower is our main focus and we have now applied for five grants in total to achieve this; three results are not back yet so fingers crossed. Thanks to Jodie Clifford for being our grants lady! Our Vice President Toby Hall has the main mowing gig for the duration, keeping the fields playable until such time as we are successful. Thanks to Cameron Mansfield and the whole family, Jay Hunter, Jason Wilson and Tom Mahony for contributing time, effort and costs to keep everything tidy this year … if I have missed anyone , thank you to you too! Much appreciated.

Trivia

The continuing COVID-19 situation has sadly caused us to have to postpone indefinitely the massive trivia night we had planned on 4th September to support Kids Cancer Project. The interest and support for this cause has been tremendous and we will keep you posted regarding the new date and hope everyone can attend. Thank you to the committee of the School of Arts for offering their larger venue when numbers got too great for Moriarty Park. We are hoping you are still available on the new date!

Tennis

Social tennis is still on Tuesday nights from 5.30pm if you fancy a

hit and the new Book a Court system will hopefully get underway soon.

Dogs

Thanks to all those cleaning up after their dogs at the park; the problem seems to be much less and it is noted and appreciated. We really don’t want to make it a no dog facility as that seems crazy in a rural town but everyone needs to be diligent and maybe carry an extra plastic bag or two, as people can genuinely just get ‘caught short’ and not have one in their pocket as they thought. Having said that, I was verbally attacked by an over defensive woman when I pulled up in the car to offer her a plastic bag the other day. Anyhoo, I would’ve appreciated it if

With Bren Dalby it was me! Choose your words more carefully than I perhaps when you offer, lol! Please also note that it is still imperative that no dogs, either on, or of course off, leash be in the park or surrounds whilst the Scenic Rim Dog Sports are training. This is generally Tuesday evenings and Saturday evenings but will be obvious if they have changed evening which they are generous enough to do to accommodate other users periodically. Please respect this request as I am sure you will . Thank you.

Meetings

Meetings are held at 6.45 at Moriarty Park on the third Monday of each month and all are welcome.

SPORT Canungra Owls Soccer News By Bren Dalby

of soccer and catch up with a few

All teams are going well and enjoying being able to play! Our Men’s team had a super win this week and are fired up to continue in that frame! Good work chaps! Come along on 9th September for the next home game and enjoy the delicacies provided by the amazing ladies in the canteen … I am led to believe a Thai Green curry and the old favourite, Butter Chicken, will be on the menu amongst other yummies! Get behind our teams and have a bit of a socially distanced evening

faces we may not have had the chance to see for a while in these strange times we have to live in at the moment. Hoping we will build momentum to have lots more players next year and really get the ball rolling! (Every pun intended lol). Go the Owls!
