Owls Make History with Home Final By Bren Dalby What a month for the Canungra Owls and how wonderful to see such a terrific crowd of supporters turn out to get behind the Men’s Metro team! There was a wonderful vibe and it was great to see some faces we haven’t seen for a while including past President John Bryce who drove a long way to be involved. The Owls hosted the Semi Final against Pacific Pines on Wednesday 8 September with great excitement. It was a terrific and nerve wracking game for all (not least for Chris Jarvis who, by the bench, was manning the phone for Joey Cecil whose wife Amy was imminently due to give birth to another gorgeous little Cecil baby). A penalty shoot out (nearly killing Chez Tomlinson with nerves and most of the rest of us not far behind) and with hearts in mouths we watched as our team came up with the goods and won the semi final.

The crowd went wild (several couldn’t talk for a few days afterwards); there was a pitch invasion (thank you Jacob Bennett for getting that baby underway); the Owl mascot (top job, Taylor Eldridge) doing cartwheels and being adored by all the children, and just a tremendous feeling of euphoria for all. Great news that night was that Mudgeeraba had beaten Minor Premiers Southport so a home Grand Final was immediately on the cards against Mudgeeraba. Generally all Grand Finals are held on a big weekend at one venue but things are a little different this year. The Grand Final on 15 September attracted a massive crowd! Mudgeeraba told me later they were intimidated by the size, enthusiasm and volume of the crowd. It was another super game with us coming back from 1-0 down, then from 2-1 down and then , the dreaded penalty shoot out once again!

Canungra Owls Captain Morgan Ritter fights off a Mudgeeraba opponent in the soccer Grand Final. Amazing job by our men and there came penalty after penalty after penalty. Sadly with the ‘luck’ on the night being with Mudgeeraba but how magic to get to a home Grand Final situation and have the community right there with you. The coach from Mudgeeraba made a lovely speech acknowledging

what a terrific bunch of guys our team are and making comment that if they had to lose to anyone it would have been sweeter for it to have been to Canungra. Respect. I spoke with Zac Mansfield later in the week and he said what a bugger it was that he put his shot over the top. I said “Oh mate, if

Marcus Rashford can miss a penalty, so can you”. His response: “Never mind Marcus Rashford, if Jimmy Tomlinson can put it over the top, so can I”. Owls teams in other age groups still have games to play, but the U13s in particular are doing fabulously. Watch this space!

HUMANS of CANUNGRA

By Keer Moriarty Photo by Katherine O’Brien

A whirlwind romance brought Jo Kennedy to Canungra - years later she says she doesn’t know many locals, but that hasn’t stopped her from volunteering to coordinate Turning Canungra Pink! It is a daunting task, but she has put together an amazing team of volunteers and a great range of events.

How did you end up in Canungra? Shane (Hosking, Jo’s husband) used to have a Harley and we used to do rides from Brisbane, through Canungra. I think on our first date we rode through Canungra on the way to Beechmont. Then he asked me to marry him after three months, so it was a bit of a whirlwind romance. We wanted it to be a casual wedding because it was our second marriage for both of us. Someone suggested a campground near Canungra - Spring Gully Stays. We came for a ride out there and fell in love with it and we got married there. When was that? This is Shane ... he’s good at this stuff ... It’ll be nine years next March. We fell in love with Canungra from being married out here. By chance as everyone does saw a block of

land in a real estate agent’s window and bought it. I guess your life changed quite a bit. Do you have kids? I have a daughter who is 23 now, she’s been in Canberra for two years. Shane has five children. It was complicated and interesting for a while, but it is good now. Hard then, good now. So you worked as a nurse? I was a beauty and massage therapist for 20 years. I had my own business for eight years, hence I understand small business well. I worked in a lot of day spas, some quite big ones like the Golden Door Retreat. That’s my passion, I love beauty and massage. I’ve done Kahuna massage which is Hawaiian style massage. I’ve studied a lot of their spiritual side. Hawaiians are very alternate

in their practices. Is that what you’re doing now? No, now I’m nursing. What happened? I think I just got burnt out and needed to step away for a while. I’m an enrolled nurse, not a registered nurse. I went to TAFE, ran my business and studied at the same time. Which you can have that flexibility when you have your own business. To a point... Yes, to a point! My mum was a nurse and my aunt was a nurse and the beauty and massage is related to the health modalities, so it made sense. Where do you work now? I’m in the Dementia Wing at an aged care facility. I’m the Team Leader in that section. That would be challenging. It is, I love it though. It is quite a nurturing role, working with dementia residents. It is a lot more personal ... I started my career at

Jo Kennedy the PA Hospital which was very clinical, then I worked in a doctor’s surgery for three years. I quit for a while, went back to beauty and then into aged care and I love it. That’s a great transition to finding what you really enjoy. Working with dementia clients is beautiful. They are beautiful people, they give you a lot. Just as much as you give them. I love the residents. How have you found coordinating Turning Canungra Pink? (We both laugh) It’s

intense isn’t it? Is it what you thought? I only wanted to be on the Committee, Shane ... Shane dropped you in it? Yes. Especially when I don’t know a lot of people in the area, I don’t have that much of a network myself. To take it on, on that basis is pretty brave. I do that in my life all the time. That’s the only way to do stuff isn’t it? Make rash decisions?

Exceptional Service Recognised By Keer Moriarty

Local resident, David Day has been recognised for over 40 years of service to the Scouting movement. David was one of only three people in Queensland to receive the Silver Kangaroo Award from the Governor of Queensland. The Award recognises exceptional service to Scouts Australia by an adult member active in a leadership role over an extended duration at various levels within the organisation. Mr Day said he was surprised and humbled by the Award. “I didn’t even know I’d been nominated - I thought ‘who’d put a good word in for me?’” Mr Day began his involvement with Scouts

in Canungra in the 1950s when he was 10 years old. He took on a leadership role when his son, Geoff joined Cub Scouts in Rockhampton and was later involved in the establishment of the Canungra Scout Den. “I spoke to the local Councillor at the time, Geoff Sharp, and asked if they had land we could use for Scouts. We ended up leasing the block the Den is on now from Council.” Mr Day is now retired from his involvement with Scouts but enjoys keeping in touch with members of the community he mentored through Scouts. “Some of the kids around town still call me ‘Bear’ (his Scout name) - it makes me proud to know I’ve helped them.”

Canungra Features in New Mini Series By Keer Moriarty Canungra has been amongst the filming locations for a new mini series. The new series will see the rugged beauty and unique grandeur of Queensland, including a location in Sarabah, streamed to millions. for Queenslanders,” the Premier said. Screen Queensland Chief Creative Officer Jo Dillon said that Screen Queensland promotes the state as an ideal location for homegrown and international screen stories. “For decades young and older travellers alike have been heeding the call of Australia as a place of discovery, renewal and freedom, and who better to star in this series as Darby than Bryan Brown, an Australian icon, alongside the talented Greta Scacchi playing English widow Joan.” “With Queensland as the odd couple’s stunning backdrop, this part love story, part mystery adventure series is set to

be hugely popular – not only in Australia but also around the world.” Matt Campbell, CEO of CJZ, said Queensland is the ultimate setting for this non-stop road adventure with a difference. “We wanted scope, scale and variety, to capture a sense of awe and the stark beauty that comes from huge skies, vast horizons and roads less travelled; Queensland has all of this and more,” Mr Campbell said. Co-star Bryan Brown added, “Looking forward to working with Greta Scacchi on Darby and Joan. Terrific story and we get to show off beautiful Queensland. Fun all round.”

Little baby Wynter was spotted at 2am, clinging to her deceased Mum who had been hit by a car and left to die. A phonecall was made to Wildcare. I happened to be manning the hotline phone that night and within 13 minutes one of our team was there to collect Mum and Bub. Our local Koala Co-ordinator and Carer, Sam, headed out to collect this precious little one kilogram terrified bundle and raced straight to Currumbin Wildlife Hospital where a vet was heading in early to help assess this little joey. Under anaesthetic for a thorough assessment with many waiting anxiously for the outcome ... the fantastic news that Wynter had sustained little more than a scratch on her nose had us all delighted after the devastation of the loss of her Mum. What Happens Downstream... By Keer Moriarty Don Caswell’s family have farmed cattle and lucerne in the Canungra area since the 1890s. Their property is located approximately seven kilometres south of the Canungra Water Treatment Plant. Don has 66,000 litres in rainwater storage to supply his home, and a licence to irrigate from Canungra Creek. In recent years when he needs to irrigate he can’t, because of water shortages. “Every summer for the last three years the creek has dried up, previously you might see it go dry every 14 years or so.” “Most times before it gets to that stage we are cut off by the Water Advisory Committee.” The Water Advisory Committee is a volunteer

group of local landholders who manage irrigation from waterways, attempting to keep the flows sustainable for all users of the Creek. There is no legal requirement to abide by their recommendations, but landholders like Don recognise the need to manage the waterway. Along with several other farming families, he approached Urban Utilities and Seqwater at their pop up stall in D J Smith Park in August. Don would like to see Canungra Creek managed differently - with all users subject to the same restrictions - and water tanks or trickle feed for all homes. “Seqwater and Urban Utilities treat our water supply like only people in town use it, but it needs to be treated like a dam.”

“The township is only a small percentage of the users - the rest is farming, wildlife and everyone who has a pipeline in the creek for household and stock usage.” When farm irrigation is restricted, often restrictions are not in place for the township - people can be watering their lawns while farmers watch their livelihood suffer. Don grew up swimming in the creek on their property but his children are not able to. Low flows mean the water is not clean enough for swimming. “I don’t want to draw everything out of the creek and not leave anything for anyone else - I want it to be sustainable for everyone.” Don predicts the consequences for the region are dire.

Don Caswell at his Wonglepong property. “The creek life will suffer, the fish will die. Farming will close up around here, there will be no farming.” “So all the rural aspect that people enjoy will disappear.”

“By trucking water in, they haven’t solved the problem, all they’ve done is supplied water to the township.” “If it continues the way it is, the creek will go dry every year.”

FOCUS ON LOCAL BUSINESS

Are You Longing to Travel? By Gina Storey It is great to see people are starting to feel more confident about travelling in the not too distant future. This week I have seen clients booking trips in 2022 to Canada and on cruises worldwide. There have been a few small cruise ships operating in Australia over the past few months – mainly expedition vessels with no more than 200 passengers and travelling around our shoreline. Wonderful trips to The Kimberley, the Queensland coast and soon they will be travelling to Tasmania and off the coast of South Australia around Kangaroo Island and Coffin Bay. Next year should see the introduction of larger ships into Australian wa-

ters, they have started operating in North America, Alaska, the Caribbean and Europe already! We have been busy over the last 18 months booking domestic travel for clients. In May Travelling Places chartered a small aircraft and took off with 10 passengers on a private Airtour to Outback Queensland. It was such a great trip we are planning the same journey for June 2022. We are also taking a small group of 10 on a luxury trip to SA next May – walking in the Flinders Ranges and wine tasting in the Clare Valley, a trip for those who enjoy great food and wine as well as the great outdoors. Let us know if you are interested and we will

send some details. You are invited to join us for a wonderful travel expo on Wednesday 20 October at 4pm. We have fantastic companies joining us. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR For All Types of Cancer Dear Editor, To talk about my prostate cancer I have to mention my Grandfather and his son, my Uncle, both in my gene pool, both developed prostate cancer. So I was aware when it became tedious to pass water! The man who saved my life and gave me the years I am living now at 82, still active, was Doctor David Walkden-Brown who practised in Canungra. The first thing he did was to organise a yearly PSA test that tracks the goings on in the Prostate with a blood test. Eventually the point was reached where I should see a specialist. At the end of our meeting the specialist said, “Don’t come back until you pass blood”. Naturally I ensured I went elsewhere next time. This is important - it is your prostate cancer you can have an opinion. If you think that all doctors will naturally put you on the right track like Doctor Walkden-Brown, that is

not good thinking. Case in point - a close family member with plenty of money from super and a great home, younger than me, is dead now after dying of prostate cancer, slowly. Apparently his doctor and he mainly discussed golf. See what I mean about having an opinion. It is your prostate cancer, own it. When my PSA scores dictated some action my specialist gave me a booklet as a guide, since I was against an operation. In the end I agreed on radiation treatment. I went down to John Flynn Hospital from 3 November 2006 to 23 January 2007 total, the treatment lasted two months, my wife drove me there each day. Radiation is received while you are lying, pretty uncovered, on your stomach, and is focused on the lines between black dots tattooed on the lower back (not quite that far down). There were a few reasons why I chose radiation. It was an early intervention and I don’t recover well from operations, also the thought of someone doing

The Canungra Times – October 2021

Rhelma and Barry Kenny. things with or near my bladder frightened the hell out of me. The radiation knocked my prostate cancer back to almost nothing. I have an arrangement with my specialist whereby I visit every six months or twelve months depending on how everything is going. Fluctuation in the readings on the PSA tests seem natural, I have options, and I live life knowing that we have control, and the options. Thank you Doctor Walkden-Brown, the doctors who have carried on his initiative and the specialists who made it work so well. I am alive. Barry Kenny

Livestock Lost in Dog Attacks By Keer Moriarty A spate of dog attacks in Witheren has left several sheep dead and landowners are concerned for the safety of their remaining stock. Chris and Kim Collard found five of their lambs attacked by what they assumed to be wild dogs on their Tucker Lane property. Four of the lambs had been killed and the other was so badly injured it had to be put down. It was the first time in five years that the couple have had any experience with animals on the property being attacked. Two nights later Chris woke up at 11pm to find a dog chasing one of the lamb’s mothers. Kim said darkness prevented Chris from seeing the dog clearly, but it looked like a large dog with a bushy tail. That night, the dog moved on to another property, killing a fully grown sheep at Laura Phillips’ Witheren property. Laura and her children woke up to find ‘Arthur’ mauled to death in a paddock near their house.

William, Jack and Ben Phillips with their pet sheep. “I’d seen Chris’ post on Facebook and thought about the sheep but we’ve never had any problems.” “Now we are terrified that the dogs will come back and get the other two.” Laura’s dog didn’t alert them to the attack and the family didn’t see or hear anything on the night. She has moved the two remaining sheep into a

ducts two regional wild dog and pig baiting programs per year. “The first was held in April and Council officers are currently planning the second program, which will be held before the end of the year.” “Council also provides assistance to individual landholders or neighbouring landholder groups with their

own baiting programs throughout the year. “Residents who are concerned about wild dogs on their property or surrounding areas are encouraged to contact Council’s Health Services team for assistance on 5540 5111.” “Landholders are also asked to report any livestock injuries as a result of wild dogs.”

Brooklyn (4J) for always being a polite, kind and attentive student who continues to aim high. Well done!

Canungra State School at Currumbin Rugby Carnival.

Mia (1C) for her dedication to learning, exceptional standard of work and being an excellent role model to her peers.

By William Pickering, Noah Silcock and Oliver Hamilton. More than 40 students represented Canungra State School at the Rugby Carnival in Currumbin on Monday 13th September 2021. There were two senior teams and two junior teams. Students travelled to Currumbin by bus for a full day of rugby league. The senior A team took a win in all four games, which was a proud moment for Canungra State School. All teams tried their best and showed great sportsmanship skills on and off the field. It was a good opportunity to meet students from other Gold Coast schools and to show Canungra’s sporting abilities, talents and strengths. All students played well and enjoyed the day. We look forward to the next rugby carnival.

OUT AND ABOUT

Trivia for Men’s Shed By Bren Dalby Moriarty Park were pleased to host a trivia night on 10 September. Thank you to all those who attended, to Canungra Foodworks and some of the regular trivia players for sponsoring the prizes. We were delighted to raise $330 for the Canungra Men’s Shed. Men’s Shed President Ian Taylor told everyone what the organisation does. A donation from the Chamber of Commerce meant they were

able to make some super possum boxes for Wildcare to distribute to worthy homes for Brushtail Possums who struggle to find a hollow log to live in these days. Bren on behalf of Wildcare and the possums! Stu Comley was our question master for the evening and a great night was had by all. Bushwalker’s Precinct Opens By Susie Cunningham

Binna Burra Lodge has celebrated its roots with the opening of its Bushwalker’s Precinct, to the delight of Queensland’s bushwalking community. The iconic ecolodge opened the Bushwalker’s Precinct in September, two years after the bushfire which razed the historic timber lodge and cabins to the ground. The precinct centres around Binna Burra’s remaining historic heart, Groom’s Cottage, which lodge co-founder Arthur Groom built for his family in 1934. It includes the refurnished Bushwalker’s Bar and Heritage Reading Room, contained within Groom’s Cottage, and the Bushwalker’s Bunkhouse, which was built in 1975. Arthur Groom’s sons Tony and Richard Groom attended the precinct opening, where guests dined on brown paper bags of high energy trail mix known as ‘scroggin’ in honour of their eldest brother, the late Donn Groom. Tony and Richard, who still live at Beechmont, reminisced about growing up in Groom’s Cottage, including memories of pillow fights and the time a cow got into the house and

ate their mother Marjorie’s dresses. Binna Burra Lodge Chair Steve Noakes said the reopening of the bunkhouse, which has capacity for 24 guests across four cabins, would help keep Binna Burra traditions alive. “The original philosophy of Arthur Groom and Romeo Lahey was to have a pricing range where irrespective of your socioeconomic background you could access the park, which is why we have spaces to pitch your own tent, powered sites, safari tents and now the Bushwalker’s Bunkhouses,” he said. “Before the fire, we had 28 pricing points from bring your own tent to the Sky Lodges, and we lost that middle ground with the loss of the Acacia, Casuarina and Rosewood rooms. People have had to book months ahead to get a spot here on weekends so this will help us out. Guests also heard from Bushwalking Queensland President John Marshall about his adventures with the Groom brothers dating back to 1967, and from Dr Melissa Harper about the newest edition of her book, ‘The Ways of the Bushwalker. On foot in Australia’, which includes references to the Binna Burra bushfires.

Regeneration Opens at The Centre By Christine Tod, Beechmont Landcare

Akoonah Timbarra Reserve Back Creek is the main watercourse that runs from South to North along the Upper Beechmont Plateau. Its origin is within the housing estate on Timbarra Drive. It then passes by Akoonah Drive before meandering through larger, primarily agricultural landholdings. Between Timbarra and Akoonah Drives it is protected within a Scenic Rim Council reserve. This has been an area of great activity for Beechmont Landcare over the years. Even in times of drought the creek has pools of water that sustain the large number of fauna. An ecologist’s report includes sightings of the conservation significant Richmond Birdwing Butterfly, Tusked Frog, Plumed Frogmouth and Koala. The Powerful Owl, Glossy Black Cockatoo, Albert’s Lyrebird and Long-nosed Potoroo have also been seen. In the dry times of 2019 and 2020 we frequently posted photos taken by our cameras on our Facebook page. When it rains it is transformed into a wonderland of deep pools and shallow rapids. Trees shade the creek and promote the conditions necessary to support a habitat of high ecological value. Fire in 2019 damaged parts of the reserve but other untouched areas became an important refuge for animals. This has redoubled our efforts to improve the conservation values of this area and since the fires we have received a number of government grants for weeding, revegetation and education. Lessons learnt from our continuing work in Akoonah Timbarra Reserve will inform the efforts of other landowners who choose to revegetate the parts of Back Creek and its tributaries that pass through their land.

Canungra’s History How Wasteful The Older Generation Was At a checkout an older woman was told to bring her own reusable bags as the plastic ones were not good for the environment ‘That’s our problem today. The former generations did not care enough about the environment” Back then we: • Returned our milk bottles, soft drink bottles and beer bottles to the shops. The shops sent them back to be washed, sterilised and refilled, so we used the same bottles over and over. • Walked upstairs, because we didn’t have an escalator or lift in every shopping centre and office block. We walked to the shops

What’s New In D J Smith Park The new shade sail over the slide portion of the playground will be welcomed by young users and families as this has been a problematic area in the summer months. This has been funded through SEQ Community Package funding. The underground electrical system has been upgraded to ensure compliance with current electrical safety standards and has been funded by a COVID Works for Queensland grant to employ local business operators.

Planning Process When a Development Application is lodged with Council, the planning team have the role to assess the application under framework set out in planning legislation by the Queensland Government which includes: 1. State Planning - involves the

Planning Act 2016,State Planning Policy, Queensland Infrastructure Program, Priority Development Areas, Community Infrastructure Designations, State Assessment and Referral Agency (SARA) and Development Assessment Rules. 2. Regional Planning - includes the South-East Queensland Regional Plan 2017 (Shaping SEQ) which advises where the urban footprint and rural and regional designations are located. It shows the urban footprint designation around Canungra where urban development and activities are permitted to occur. 3. Local Planning - involves the Scenic Rim Regional Council Planning Scheme 2020 which is the statutory local planning document that provides local controls and planning provisions for development applications within our local gov-

ernment area. Council must comply with the planning frameworks and legislative requirements. Development Applications are generally Code Assessable or Impact Assessable and only Impact Assessable applications are publicly advertised for public submission. I am happy to talk further with residents who may require further information on this process.

Free Tree Day Free Tree day will be in D J Smith Park on Saturday 2 October from 8am till 12noon for ratepayers to collect their free

trees. Don’t forget to bring your Free Tree Voucher as the process is no voucher, no tree!

Well Done Canungra Owls Men’s Team! The Senior Men’s team did Canungra proud by winning the semi-finals and hosting the finals at Moriarty Park: a history making event for Canungra soccer. Although they didn’t take away the win following a penalty shootout, we are extremely proud of you and look forward to an even more successful season next year.

COUNCIL WATCH WITH AMANDA HAY

Email: frangipani1956@msn.com The following are my views, not those of the Editor. Any threats of legal action can be directed to me.

Bouquet

Bouquet

Common sense has prevailed and Councillors have not blindly gone along with our Mayor’s move to renew the CEO’s contract, no questions asked. Why should any mayor elected in the 2024 (yes, sadly, 2024) local government elections be saddled with the current mayor’s pick? Let’s hope the external party tasked with reviewing the CEO’s reappointment is truly independent. I love it when ratepayers’ funds are used to “facilitate further dialogue”!

2021 Scenic Rim Business Excellence Awards – I am on the edge of my seat waiting to hear if the businesses which received significant tourism grant funds from the State Govt will also be nominees and recipients of awards, rather than those operators who have done it tough and struggled through without assistance over the past year. Keep an eye open for North Stores, Hazelwood Estate and The Overflow Estate, who, between them, received just under $4 million.

The outsourcing of some of Council’s workforce to other councils at the same time it has failed to meet some of its own works targets.

Development Applications of Interest The application on everyone’s minds at present has to be MCU20/133, and Council’s approval of the Over 50s Lifestyle Village at 7-39 Finch Road, Canungra. An appeal is being prepared. Only persons who lodged a valid submission against the DA can be a party to the appeal. At present, nine submitters are onboard. The property is currently not owned by the developer, however a caveat was registered over the property in June 2021. The developer engaged in a Pre-Lodgement Meet-

ing with council on 21 July 2020, “to discuss any council concerns in relation to an MCU for Relocatable Home Park, Childcare Centre and Shop (Retail)”. Council has declined to confirm if a subsequent meeting was conducted following the developer’s totally changed plans for a Retirement Facility (Over 50s lifestyle resort – 188 Dwellings) and an office. The water issue – sad news. Coca-Cola Amatil (Aust) Pty Ltd ACN 076 594 119 became the registered owner of land upon which significant commercial groundwater extraction occurs on Tamborine Mountain on 4 August 2021. A lease of five years with an option for a further five was also registered. RAL21/038 – 34-48 Geiger Road, Canungra. Subdivision one lot into two.

MCU1/100 – 442 Lamington National Park Road, Canungra. Intensive Horticulture. Mushroom farm. DA lodged following compliance action. Adjoins Canungra Creek. MCU21/101 – 33 Christie Street, Canungra. Telecommunications facility. Radio dish antenna, 1.8m in diameter. MCU21/109 – 41-47 Shay Place, Witheren. Dual occupancy.

Court Cases Involving SRRC: No new court actions recorded, however 11 already on the go, soon to be 12. Two matters up for review in September, including the damages claim filed in the Supreme Court by Scenic Rim Developments Pty Ltd.

These are my own personal views. I do not purport to speak on behalf of Council.

People’s Long Weekend With the cancelling of the Ekka this year the Scenic Rim Council deferred the Show Holiday. This was done so that Scenic Rim residents were not celebrating a day off whilst in lock down due to COVID. The State Government has now appointed the 29 October 2021 as the People’s Long Weekend for this year.

GROW YOUR OWN with

Bill O’Sullivan

TULLAMORE FARM We have plenty of room here at Tullamore Farm but we grow some of our produce in 20 litre food grade containers. We find the containers handy as digging up produce can be hard work as you get older, plus the vegetables can damage easily. We grow all our turmeric and ginger this way and have for about four years. At the current price of both and the health benefits they are valuable produce to grow. We have been planting out this year’s crop since 3 September and always ensure we plant out fully by the end of October. Turmeric and ginger are heavy feeders so we plant them in 100% compost. When planting out we two thirds fill the container and then

place two or three pieces depending on size and quality. You press them gently into the compost with the nodes facing up. You then cover with a further seven or eight centimetres of compost. We cover with some sugarcane mulch to help retain the moisture. Use the same process if you are planting straight into the garden. Give them a good initial water and then water as needed. About six months later the plant will start to die back and you can then harvest the turmeric and ginger when needed. When they are ready to harvest we take them in their containers and empty them into the compost bin we are currently filling and remove the produce. Very efficient, minimal damage and quick.

Bill O’Sullivan harvesting turmeric at Tullamore Farm. We harvest one container at a time and leave the others until they are needed. The other attraction with this method is that when the crop is ready you can leave the turmeric and ginger in the containers

and simply reduce the watering and leave in a shady spot until required. We have left them in food grade containers this way for nearly two years and still harvested great produce.

NATIVE VIOLETS By Susan Cully

Our native violet, Viola hederacea, is commonly found in the damp corners of our forests and streams in northern New South Wales and South East Queensland. Pictured are two variants found in the Akoonah Timbarra Reserve in Beechmont. These little, unobtrusive and often overlooked plants deserve attention. Among the many little creeping plants and ground covers are Centellas, Dichondras, Goodenias, Native Lobelias, Hydrocotyles and Violas. Several of these have very pretty purple, yellow or blue flowers. All can be grown in shady corners and can form a carpet often replacing areas of lawn. Dichondras are often used extensively for landscaping and, in some countries, as a ‘doesn’t-have-

to-be-mown’ lawn. The Native Violet can be bought in many nurseries, from vigorous hybrid versions in major retail outlets to more delicate varieties in bush nurseries. Violas are quick growing, forming dense mats, spread by means of underground runners. They like moist open soil with organic matter and love shade. Attractive around ponds and along paths, they can be used in rockeries, and containers. With their trailing habit they are useful in window boxes and hanging baskets. Two thoughtful and informative books are recommended: Plants of the Forest Floor and Grasses of SubTropical Eastern Australia by Penny Watsford and Margaret Elliot with additional information supplied by Robert Price and Lui Weber.

YOUR SHOULDER By Alison Ford

Your shoulder complex, composed of the clavicle, scapula, and humerus, is an intricately designed combination of four joints, the Glenohumeral (GH) Joint, the Acromioclavicular (AC) Joint and the Sternoclavicular (SC) Joint and a ‘floating joint’, the Scapulothoracic (ST) Joint. The GH, AC and SC joints link the arm to the skeleton and the ST joint allows for your shoulder blade to glide over the contours of your upper back. All four joints work collectively to achieve normal shoulder girdle movements. Movements of your shoulder girdle represent a complex dynamic relationship between muscle forces, ligament constraints and bony articulations.

Thus within the shoulder complex, it is muscular forces which serve as the primary mechanism for securing the shoulder girdle to the back providing a stable base of support for upper limb movements. The freedom of movement of your shoulder has been developed at the expense of stability, and it is these competing mobility and stability demands, combined with an amazingly intricate design, which makes your shoulder highly susceptible to injury. Now that you can picture the complexity of this amazing ‘joint’ I shall discuss some common shoulder complaints such as Osteoarthritis (OA) of the AC joint, ‘frozen shoulder’ and bursitis in subsequent issues.

NATURE’S GEMS Rufous-throated Honeyeater Conopophila rufogularis

By Melissa Whitby

Learn More about Piccolo!

Piccolo is a good looking fellow looking for his forever home. He’s a two year old male Australian Cattledog who loves cuddles and playing with toys. Piccolo is very shy around other dogs so it would be best if he is the only fur child in the home. Being a working breed, he is high energy

so would benefit from going on daily walks and being provided with enrichment in the home. If you are interested in him, please come and see him at the AWL Gold Coast premises and bring in the whole clan. Piccolo is $750 to adopt and comes microchipped, health checked and desexed.

Piccolo is high energy but loves cuddles! AWL Gold Coast Rehoming Centre:

Please Note: Prices Are Subject To Change.

Australia is home to an incredible number of honeyeater species. It does not matter if one visits the arid deserts or wet rainforests of Australia, there will be a Honeyeater species present. Last year, I was lucky enough to travel throughout Queensland, photographing the wildlife as I went. One small bird I encountered was the Rufous-throated Honeyeater. It had been quite a few years since I had seen this Honeyeater. The easiest way to identify this small honeyeater is by its distinctive colouring. Rufous-throated Honeyeaters have a prominent rufous coloured throat patch and yellow colouring on the side of their wings. Similar species to this species is the Rufous-banded Honeyeater, however, the distinguishing feature is the rufous band across the chest. Both male and female birds of the Rufous-throated Honeyeater are similar in colour. The range of the Rufous-throated Honeyeater is predominately in Northern Australia. I have seen the birds on

Cape York and in Central Queensland in areas such as Clermont. They are usually seen near water and will utilise a range of habitats from gardens to grassed woodlands. For someone trying to identify this species, it can be a challenge as they are constantly on the move. The best looks I have had are when the birds are coming in to drink or feeding in blossoms. Their size and distinctive rufous throat patch certainly sets them apart from the rest. For more experienced birders, their call will denote their presence which then makes it easier to

pinpoint the bird. Small bird species such as the Rufous-throated Honeyeaters tend to be birds that most birdwatchers identify on their journey to finding other iconic species. For me, seeing a bird species such as the Rufous-throated Honeyeater throughout its range indicates that the birds’ habitat and food sources are still prevalent. Which in turn, indicate to me that these small birds are continuing to thrive in the 20 years since I first observed them. These small birds are just as important as more predominant iconic species and I hope others in the birdwatching world appreciate them for how unique they really are.

News from St Luke’s By Di Ayscough

I always look forward to the monthly edition of the Canungra Times because it keeps me up to date with what’s happening around our beautiful township. One article I always enjoy reading is the Humans of Canungra story. Here I am able to learn about someone I don’t usually know. The September edition gave insight into the life of Terry Legg. He sounds like an amazing yet humble man who through his own ability became a Chaplain and who has helped so many people by listening. We can learn from Terry’s story by realising our own talents and listening to others. It is very easy to turn away and not listen. Is there any particular occasion in your life where you wished you had listened to some advice, or to someone who cared for you? I am sure we have all had those times. Sometimes I think I am not listening to what God is telling me. Maybe it is easier not to listen but God doesn’t give up on us. I used to think God never spoke to me like others told me he spoke to them. But then I realised I see and hear him every day when I look at nature, listen to the birds, see the sun rise and set, hear the gentle breeze in the trees and smell the perfume of flowers in bloom. You are welcome to come to St Luke’s and experience the feel of God’s presence in our building. Do not ever think, you won’t be heard or noticed. The people of St Luke’s will welcome you but more importantly God will hear you. The words of the 23rd Psalm tell us enough to know we are loved and cared for. Be thankful for where we live, for our freedom, for people like Terry Legg and for St Luke’s. Next month I will give the details of our Christmas celebrations and our Street Stall.

SPORT Sportsperson of the Month Awards With Bren Dalby

MASYN PROSSER MASYN PROSSER - is an enthusiastic talented young local sportsman who started out at Beenleigh Lions Rugby League club at the age of six … his team being undefeated ever since! He discovered Futsal was both exciting and challenging for him and soon after joined Galaxy and in 2020 Force Futsal Acadamy. Goalkeeping became this fear-

less young man’s passion, and the Force came second in the Allstars comp and third in the QLD vs NSW Futsal comp in Ballina. His achievements have been many: first in Gold Coast Futsal Coomera; first in Champions League competition; first in QLD junior Futsal superlinga but the cream was winning the 2021 U9 Gold Coast International Cup after

three intense and rigorous days of playing. In the Grand Final the exhausted team were 3-0 down to then find a renewed power from within to fight back to a 5-4 win! Masyn recently earned the Golden Glove Trophy in Brisbane Metro Futsal League and has since been asked to be the Keeper for the Brisbane Strikers Under 9’s team.

SAMUEL HALL – Samuel (see article September Canungra Times) is a quiet, dedicated and focussed young man who has trained in Taekwondo since the age of 5. Mum Sarah is a Black Belt and holds classes each Monday and Thursday at Moriarty Park where she has now 12 students including Samuel, who will develop a

lifelong benefit from not only the fitness aspect of this code but the teaching of integrity, respect and discipline. Samuel has been training in Canungra now for three years and worked tremendously hard to recently attain his Junior Black Belt. This is no mean feat with a rigorous grading system where Samuel

had to demonstrate his black belt grade ‘pattern’, show self defence techniques, and fighting skills against several opponents whilst under direct scrutiny of the examiner, and an audience of spectators. He sailed through and is to be commended for his wonderful Black Belt achievement. Well done Samuel.

Moriarty Park News

Not too much to report as we have all been soccer focused this month! In this section however, we and Canungra Owls Soccer Club would like to give massive thanks to Canungra Show Society who, having purchased from Foodworks many cartons of soft drinks etc for the Canungra Rodeo, decided to donate these to the Canungra Owls to help out with Grand Final and Presentation Day. This was very gratefully accepted and very much appreciated. Any remaining soft drinks will be passed on to the Country Fair run by Turning Canungra Pink on 30 October at Moriarty Park. Before then, we would love you to join us for a fun affordable night out at Pink Trivia on Friday

8 October, at 6pm for 6.30pm start. This event, hosted by Stu and run by Bren, is only $5 per person; BYO drinks and nibblies but please give generously in the raffle so we can raise some good funds for this terrific cause that in some way affects us all at some stage in our life. We also have Pink Bingo on Friday 15 October at 6 for 6.30pm start. BYO anything you may wish to nibble or quaff and the cost is $10 for half a book or $15 for a whole book. BYO dobbers or felt tips if you can but we will have some. Thank you to Canungra Foodworks for being our sponsor for these events and thank you to anyone who donates to the raffle to boost the funds raised.
