A Lighter Shade of Pink

Turning Canungra Pink has been scaled back for 2020, with COVID-19 regulations impacting on the ability of the Canungra Chamber of Commerce to plan and run events. Canungra Chamber of Commerce President, Monique Morcus, said the decision to limit events for the cancer fundraiser was made to reduce stress on businesses and volunteers. “With the bushfires in September 2019 and the impact of COVID-19, we felt it is too much to ask businesses to contribute through donations and organising events this year,” said Monique. “It was hard to know what the restrictions would be at this time and so much effort goes into planning events that we couldn’t justify it.” Turning Canungra Pink Coordinator, Nicole Krause, said some fundraising is still taking place. “Pink Polo was held at the end of September and the Canungra Hotel is running Pink Bingo on the 17th October,” said Nicole. “We will have merchandise available at selected locations in Canungra and donation tins will be in many of the businesses.” Nicole said her team of volunteers are organising Turning Canungra Pink merchandise stalls to run on weekends. “We are doing the very best we can given the conditions and COVID-19 restrictions,” said Nicole. The Pink Bingo night at Canungra Hotel has sold out, however Canungra Hotel Manager Simon Walsh said if COVID-19 restrictions eased he hoped to release more tickets.

Money raised through Turning Canungra Pink is donated to Cancer Council Queensland and Pink Assist a fund for local people who are being treated for cancer. Monique Morcus said help is still available through Pink Assist funds available for local people who require assistance. “Our fundraising in previous years has been outstanding; so we still have the means to help any local people who are undergoing cancer treatment,” she said. Fundraising for Kids’ Cancer

Rob Pollard getting a shave from Di Robson

A great effort by a small group of dedicated local fundraisers has seen over $40,000 raised to support The Kids Cancer Project. On Thursday 10th September, Camryn Simpson and Reegan Pollard got ‘the chop’ at Zanzibar Hairstyling while fathers Danny Simpson and Rob Pollard along with Camryn’s uncle, Josh Buchanan, emerged from the salon with their heads and beards shaved. The girls had been growing their hair for

some time and Rob and Danny had grown and coloured their beards. Danny’s daughter Blakely was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer in 2016 and the Simpson family have been passionate about raising funds for children’s cancers since. Blakely is now three and a half years old and cancer free. Camryn’s mother Carlie said the team fundraising was run through the everydayhero.com.au web site.

“The two girls and three men have done an amazing job fundraising it is currently sitting over $40,000 which is a great effort,” said Carlie. “We are also very grateful to Di Robson from Zanzibar Hairstyling and Hayley Luscombe for giving up their time.” Carlie said the support from the local community through this fundraising effort has been wonderful and her family will continue to support The Kids Cancer Project into the future.

The Canungra Times – October 2020

Is there a Plan for Canungra’s Water? Flows in the Canungra Creek have dropped again due to dry conditions, falling below seven megalitres per day. The flow rate was at 6.55 megalitres per day on 21st September 2020, lower than the recorded flow of 6.96 megalitres on 21st October 2019. In November 2019, the Canungra Water Treatment Plant was taken off line due to a lack of water in Canungra Creek. Concerns have since been raised about the ability of the town water supply to cope with increased residential housing. State Member for Scenic Rim, Jon Krause, said he suggested last year that Urban Utilities devise a way to restrict access to the filling station by out-of-town commercial trucks to keep locals in water for as long as possible.

“To my knowledge nothing was done,” said Jon. “If we keep adding new homes to the network, this issue will only get worse. The State and Council should consider freezing land available for new homes and have no additional land added until a long term water solution is developed.” “Seqwater also needs to consider all options for enhancing Canungra’s water security. We can’t build too many homes and then have a situation where water is trucked into Canungra annually. That would be a ridiculous outcome.” Urban Utilities said Canungra has been in drought response for its drinking water supply since early June this year. If Canungra Creek stops flowing and Seqwater needs to take the water treatment plant offline, Seqwater will

tanker drinking water to Canungra to maintain the town supply. “The tanker filling station in Canungra will remain open for as long as possible, but it could be closed if we progress further into drought and the creek stops flowing,” Ms Cull said. “Flows in Canungra Creek can change

quickly so we recommend customers who are not connected to the town supply consider their alternative plans now, including driving to the nearest filling station in Beaudesert.” Urban Utilities indicated to maintain supply from the tanker filling station for as long as possible, it may be

KD’s Antiques - Celebrating 30 Years in Business In 1990, Desley Bird was a dedicated teacher, but she felt she needed something else to do. Another passion to follow. “I had always been interested in antiques,” said Desley, “So I went through the process of getting a second hand dealer’s licence and opening an antique shop.” Desley says she knew nothing about retail at the time, but took leave from teaching to open a shop in Nerang. “Later, I decided I would go back to teaching full time but I had only closed the shop for three weeks when we had the opportunity to move the stock into an antique centre in Brisbane.” This saw Desley teaching Monday to Friday and selling antiques on weekends in the Brisbane centre, as well as raising her children, Craig and

Peta-Ann, and supporting her husband, Ken in his plumbing business and surf-lifesaving roles. “The children often came to auctions with me in the evenings,” said Desley. Desley and Ken later moved to Canungra and when a shopfront became available in February 2012 she moved the business to the location on Christie Street, which she says was the best decision they ever made. “There have been some challenges,” she said. “There was the fire in the laundromat next door which left us trading out of a shipping container for months while the building was repaired. Of course, there were the bushfires last year and the challenges of COVID-19 this year.” “I love doing what I do,” she said, “Canungra has been wonderful to us,” she said.

Queensland Votes 2020 Candidates for Scenic Rim were invited to provide information about issues in the Scenic Rim. Unfortunately, at the time of printing, Labor and Greens had not endorsed candidates and were not able to provide any information.

Jon Krause Liberal National Party With 234,000 Queenslanders out of work at this time, we need a government that will unlock the potential of all parts of our State’s economy – small business, tradies, farmers and other sectors. That’s why the LNP team are making a commitment to no new taxes if we’re elected, so the ‘job-makers’ have the confidence to invest and grow jobs, knowing they have a government that backs them 100%, while easing the cost of living for households. We are backing this with a plan to invest in projects that generate jobs, like the New Bradfield Scheme that has the

Jon Krause

potential to harness the benefit of North Queensland’s rainfall. In our region, the LNP will fast-track approvals for the Coomera Connector / Second M1, to ease congestion on the M1. Just as my lobbying saw road safety improvements in Canungra, I will continue lobbying (together with Council) to put a Canungra bypass on government’s agenda which it is not right now. I grew up on a dairy farm (run by dad - mum

worked as a teacher) and learned there how to work hard and get things done. Before being elected, my job in a bank involved supporting all types of businesses to get on with their projects, to create jobs. When part of the LNP Government 201215, we restored maternity and other services to Beaudesert Hospital after Labor cut them – it’s a great example of what can be done when you have the right government in place. It was hard work, but we got it done. After 25 of the last 30 years with Labor in power, we need a change in government to get Queensland working again. Just like the LNP restored hospital services, I’m asking for your

support to get on with delivering more for our region – roads, police, affordable, reliable power – to unlock the potential for our future.

Paul Henselin One Nation Paul Henselin was born in July 1967 in Queensland. A fifth Generation Queenslander, his great, great grandparents were part of founding the township of Boonah in 1867. Paul says his plan and One Nation’s is to support farmers at all levels. Giving them back access to water and land without fear of facing huge fines. Working with State Government to keep bush fire risk low and proper management with our Rural Fire Fighters on the ground.

• Water supply piped to Canungra. As reported by Samantha Dick in 2019 the Canungra Creek is dangerously low again and local residents may have to buy water. Despite appeals by residents to Federal and State Governments for water to be piped from the Hinze Dam, just a 22 minute drive away, their cries have been ignored.

Queensland Votes 2020

• One Nation will introduce legislation that would deny Non Irrigators and Non Farmers from buying water licences.. Farmers are being left high and dry following the decision to allow Local and Foreign Water Traders to buy and sell our water to the highest bidder. • Australia needs to return to its manufacturing roots. I will seek funding and support from the Federal Government and Councils to make Scenic Rim the hub for this industry. • Ensure more support for Rural small businesses. I am a local business owner and

personally lived through the struggles of keeping my business operating under these trying times. • Scenic Rim needs a TAFE. This would enable school leavers to complete a trade, certificate and diploma as a pathway for their careers. “Like you I am sick of the same old rhetoric and broken promises that you hear constantly from the other parties towards the people of Queensland and the Scenic Rim,” said Paul. “One Nation is the party that listens to the people, One Nation is the party that will put you first and politics last.”

Postal Vote Applications Open Postal vote applications for the 2020 State general election will close Friday 16th October. Electoral Commissioner Pat Vidgen said the option to apply for a postal vote weeks before the start of the election period, will support electors who may not want to vote in person due to COVID-19. “The ECQ is working to ensure Queensland electors have every opportunity to vote for their representative in the next Parliament,” Mr Vidgen said. “Usually postal vote applications open with the issue of the writ, which begins the election period.” “However, with COVID-19 still a factor, we anticipate strong interest in postal voting just as

we saw in March’s local government elections where around 570,000 electors applied.” “While electors can apply for a postal vote on the ECQ website or by phoning the ECQ’s call centre from Monday 14th September, we can’t mail the ballot papers until after candidate nominations close in mid-October.” “We remind electors who applied for a postal vote in March and want to postal vote in October, they need to apply again,” he said. Mr Vidgen said electors can be assured ECQ is ready to deliver a COVID-safe State general election with its Statement of Intent outlining the election’s delivery principles.

“We are planning for an election period with two weeks of extended early voting days and hours, including voting on Saturday 24th October as well as election day voting between 8am and 6pm on Saturday 31st October,” he said. “We ask electors to choose where and when they’ll vote, stay 1.5 metres apart, use hand sanitiser and bring their own pen or pencil.” “The ECQ continues to take the advice of the Chief Health Officer in safely managing voting in Queensland.” “It’s important to note that due to careful adherence to health advice during the March local government elections, there was no subsequent spike in COVID-19 infections,” he said.

HUMANS CANUNGRA

of

Bren Dalby By Keer Moriarty Photography by Katherine O’Brien Photography

An event isn’t really an event in Canungra until Bren Dalby turns up to play bagpipes and/or run a raffle! Tirelessly working in the community she is Moriarty Park President, a wild life carer and long term committee member of the Canungra Owls Soccer Club. In her spare time Bren Shows Bull Mastiffs and indulges her love of heavy metal music.

Is there much cross over between bagpipes and heavy metal? Only ‘It’s a long way to the top’ (by AC/ DC). That’s pretty well the only one for me. Although there’s a band called the Red Hot Chilli Pipers play lots of rock. I met them a few years ago and they were really good pipers, I just play a bit. It’s been a lot of fun doing it with Point O Five and I’ve played with several bands on the Coast. My first husband was lead vocals and rhythm guitar in several bands on the Gold Coast, so I was groupie, roadie and bagpiper for Long Way to the Top. And Chauffeur. I know you’re a big Iron Maiden Fan... Iron Maiden is my favourite band by

miles. I first saw them when I was 13 in Edinburgh in 1981 on the Number of the Beast Tour. Don’t tell my mother. She doesn’t know? I think I did tell her when she was about 80. What, did you sneak out? Yeah! I was 13 (laughs)! Got on the train at Lockerbie and went to Edinburgh to see Maiden. Who did you go with? Fiona. My best mate. I told my mother I was at Fiona’s, and she said she was at mine. You’re bad! Naughty (laughs)! It was a lot of fun. I’ve seen them 12 times now. Rowan and I were going this year to see them. I took her to see them when she was 13.

So it’s a family tradition? Absolutely. Actually for Christmas they did the most precious thing. They pinched all my Maiden t-shirts and went with their partners and got a photo with Santa with them wearing my Maiden t-shirts. It was the most precious thing. Very thoughtful. I love it, comes out every Christmas. And the concert this year? Of course it was cancelled with the COVID thing but Maiden put out a t-shirt. It was the same sort of Iron Maiden and a picture - I ordered them for Rowan and I - they arrived the other day. It’s COVID19 Pandemic and in emergencies cut this up and use it for toilet paper.

Bren Dalby with Targe. I thought it’s a good souvenir of the concert we didn’t get to. I was going to see the Iron Maidens, an all girl group, cover band; and that’s been put off again and again. Apparently they’re brilliant. You’ve spent time with Jimmy Barnes as well... I had 20 minutes with Jimmy Barnes in his underpants (laughs)! It’ll cost you wine if you want to know more! He came in for an x-ray. I didn’t know who he was, had no idea who Jimmy Barnes

was. It was when he was drinking, he’d fallen out of bed and suspected broken ribs or something. He was chatting away and I thought he was taking the mickey out of me. Took me a while to work out he was actually quite famous. In the end I said here, entertain yourself while I go and develop your x-rays, and he wrote out all autographs for everybody. I’ve still got mine, it says “Thanks for the x-rays Bren, love Jimmy Barnes”!

Canungra RSL Sub-Branch building will be put up for sale.

RSL Sub-Branch Building for Sale Canungra RSL SubBranch members have voted to put the Pine Street building up for sale. A Special General Meeting of members was held at the Club on Sunday 27th September 2020. Following a contentious debate, Canungra RSL Sub-Branch members voted ten to four in favour of a motion to sell the building. Canungra RSL Services Club had operated in the building until 2014. In November 2013 a motion to wind up the Club was withdrawn after a rescue package

came from Nerang RSL & Memorial Club. However, Canungra was not able to operate profitably and the Club closed briefly in November 2014, reopening after negotiations recommenced with Nerang. Nerang Memorial Club took on a ten year lease in 2014 to run the Canungra Services Club from the Pine Street location, which included licences for 10 poker machines. In December 2019, Nerang handed back the lease, paying out the remaining five years in rent. The building has been vacant in the ten months

since Nerang RSL & Memorial Club handed back the lease. A group of local people have attempted to garner support to run another Club in the premises, however this has not been successful, with repairs to the building required before it can be leased. The land and building was donated to the Canungra RSL SubBranch in 1954. The Canungra RSL Sub-Branch is a separate entity to the Canungra Services Club and will continue to operate to run memorial services and to look after veterans’ welfare.

Bringing Power Back to the People of Queensland

“We just love what we do and how we do it, helping our customers with their energy challenges” said Lucio Siri, Managing Director of Energy Solution Centre located opposite the historic Commercial Hotel in Nerang. “I have a love for the hinterland, which is why we located our technology centre at this very accessible location to this amazing community.” The Energy Solution Centre is a family owned business which has been installing residential, commercial and off-grid solutions for over 13 years. They pride themselves on building the best technology showroom on the Gold Coast to help customers make the right choice when it comes to energy independence. “It continues to be daunting for customers, knowing what to buy when it comes to solar

and battery solutions. Make the wrong choice by not understanding or being sold to could cost you thousands.” “Our motto is to educate first and sell second, it’s ingrained in all our staff and the showroom is setup to deliver this critical phase. Don’t buy something you don’t understand.” The impressive technology showroom displays a number of leading brands and uses the latest technology to create digital designs and rapid quotes. The owners are very passionate about the environment, climate change and sustainability. “We know how temperamental energy can be in the hinterland. Losing power can be a pain in the neck or it can be unnoticed. We have the best solar battery combinations including a full range of professional off-grid systems.”

The Energy Solution Centre team outside their Nerang Showroom.

“We simply don’t sell crap solar,” said Lucio “With all the turmoil this year, we have seen a surge in interest and installations for our offgrid solutions. With such uncertainty in government behaviours and state lockdowns, people are wanting to take their

power back, and disconnect from the system more than ever.” They have a range of solutions and packages to suit all budgets, from small residential to large commercial applications. The business is well known for their tailor

made, problem free, offgrid solutions. Energy Solution Centre is Gold Coast’s number one for Solar and Battery Solutions. The awesome Energy Solution Centre team can be reached on 1300 217 079 for showroom or in-home appointments.

Celebrating Zanzibar’s 3rd Birthday Zanzibar Hairstyling salon owner, Di Robson, has employed two more highly skilled hairdressers, Haley Suttie and Tracey Braidwood, to join the team, giving the salon a total of four exceptional master stylists. Stylist Dani Papaz is on maternity leave and will join the salon again early next year. Di’s Mum, Ruth Robson, also plays a large part to the success of the Salon. She is the in house relaxation therapist and a great support to the stylists. Clients can come in and enjoy a shoulder massage, foot massage and reflexology session with Ruth. Di has a very lengthy process in selecting the best stylists for her team. “This is crucial in ensuring every client is given the highest standard of personalised service they have become accustomed to,” said Di. “It’s all about you and our aim is to give quality time to every client and ensure they are happy with the end result of

their hair service, at the same time enjoying their experience at Zanzibar Hairstyling.” “Our clients travel from far afield and locally. We are embracing and enjoying all the support from the local community visiting our Salon in the last three years since we opened,” said Di.

Education

Due to COVID-19 restrictions most of the stylists’ external education has been cancelled. “We have come together as a team with our hair supplier company and have designed our personal in salon training within our salon to upgrade our skills and stay in touch with current trends,” said Di. “We offer complimentary hair consultations, for new and existing clients to make sure they are completely happy with their hair.” Di said she is grateful for the support of the Canungra community since opening the salon and looks forward to welcoming new clients.

O’Reilly’s Campground Reopens

Green Mountains has reopened as O’Reilly’s Campground.

The National Parks operated campground at Green Mountains – formally known as Green Mountains campground, reopened on September 18th as O’Reilly’s Campground. It has had six months of building and development and has been transformed into a modern campground catering not only for campers and campervans, but also those without camping gear who are after a permanent tent.

Two of these tents are designed for disabled access. The revitalisation of the camping area created 120 construction jobs and will support ten operational jobs at O’Reilly’s. The upgrade includes: • A new amenities building, communal camp kitchen and hub, with pathways and ramping to enable accessibility for all guests. • Development of 21 recreational vehicle sites and 24 campsites.

• Construction of 17 safari tents with ensuite pods and two of them with disabled access. • Creation of a fire pit and gathering area. • Water is to be recycled back through the toilet systems. Assistant Tourism Minister and Member for Gaven Meaghan Scanlon said last year’s devastating bushfires in May followed by the COVID19 pandemic had a huge impact on the local tourism industry.

Books, Vintage Clothing and Records a Popular Combination

Canungra Books and Art has been busy with Queenslanders looking for somewhere local to visit. “It has been lots of fun having so many people visiting Canungra from around Queensland and enjoying discovering the magic of our small town,” said owner Jan McGregor. “Now with Binna Burra and O’Reillys back in operation the town feels like we have our hinterland heart back,” said Jan. Canungra Books and Art is always a surprise for people when they come in, with no proper shopfront to peer into beforehand.

“It’s not until people are in the door that they discover that we are a ‘real bookshop’ with a huge range of books from the very old to current favourites,” said Jan. One of the big surprises is the look on children’s faces when they see the record player, something many children have never seen. The comment of ‘this brings back memories’ is a regular amongst the adults when they see the range of records including Jazz, Blues, Rock ‘n Roll, Classical and sheet music too. “One of our growing collections is our beautiful range of vintage books,” explained Jan. “We have many treasures

from the 1800’s including a beautiful set of Shakespeare, a rare collection of Dickens books, and many beautiful poetry books, first editions and favourite classics.” To hold a book created more than 150 years ago is a treasure in today’s world. Vintage clothing from around the world is a popular part of the shop. Items are carefully selected by Jan’s niece Ruby, and the shop has a regular clientele of customers who come especially to check out the latest new stock that Ruby brings in each Wednesday. “We have a great team who are passionate about the shop and take pride

in what we do here,” said Jan. Canungra Books and Art provides a 30% credit on books purchased from the shop toward the next

purchase if the books are returned. Jan welcomes enquiries from customers wishing to sell good condition books and records.

Binna Burra Brings Back Activities and Guide Walks

Lisa Groom and daughter Inari from Park Tours.

Binna Burra continues on its road to recovery with accommodation open and their famous Activities Program back on track. Heading the new Activities Team is Lisa Groom and her guides from Park Tours. Lisa is the granddaughter of Binna Burra’s co-founder Arthur Groom, and her daughter Inari is also an interpretive tour guide. Lisa and Inari grew up exploring Lamington National Park and the surrounding gorges and

plateaus of the Binna Burra area. In fact all Park Tours Guides are locals and have a wealth of knowledge to share. Whether it is introducing the unique plant species such as the Antarctic Beech, or explaining the geological wonders of the ancient volcanic caldera, the Guides are ready to amaze and entertain with their wealth of knowledge. If you like being scared beyond belief, just ask them about the forest’s

collection of snakes and spiders. “Our beautiful home is a world renowned hotspot for biodiversity and has one of the largest diversity of plants and animals anywhere on the planet, says Lisa. “It just amazes me that this wonder of the natural world, is only an hour or so from Brisbane and the Gold Coast. “Walking along the trails with bird song all around is a treat by itself, and to have someone with

you to share the secrets of the forest is even better.” “My Park Tours team are just so very lucky to be able to take visitors on bushwalks that reveal the marvels of Gondwana.” “Each day we love to surprise and educate our walkers with fascinating interpretation. Whether its showing them all the abundant edible plants, or opening their eyes to the ancient history of strange, monumental rock formations, we give walkers a deeper appreciation of our precious ecology, as well as great stories to take home with them,” adds Lisa. Guided walks through Lamington National Park, along with a range of other Binna Burra

Activities, including Archery, Bush Skills for Kids, Spot Lighting Night Tours can be booked online at www. binnaburralodge.com.au/ activities/ There is also a program of wellness activities that can be booked, including Yoga and Qi Gong. All activities are available for local residents, day visitors and Binna Burra guests. Activities are conducted in small groups and can also be booked as private experiences. Binna Burra’s Sky Lodges and the Rainforest Camp Site are also open for accommodation bookings via the Binna Burra Lodge web site.

POPera In The Paddock Will Be Music To Scenic Rim’s Ears

Queensland’s finest musical talent come to Beechmont for the inaugural POPera in the Paddock, as part of the region’s ongoing bushfire recovery. The gala concert will take place at the Scenic Rim’s newest ecotourism attraction, Hazelwood Estate in April 2021. The new collaboration between the Scenic Rim Regional Council and Queensland Music Festival will feature light opera, musical theatre and popular music performances, showcasing some of Queensland’s finest talent alongside a professional orchestra. Scenic Rim Mayor Greg Christensen said the event would give the Scenic Rim a much-needed economic injection. “POPera in the Paddock is expected to attract more than 4,000 visitors, with an anticipated economic return of

over $1.3 million to the local economy,” he said. “We are delivering this event in one of the most bushfire affected parts of the region, giving the communities of Beechmont and Binna Burra a much-needed boost. “We’ll be encouraging visitors to book and stay a few nights in the beautiful Scenic Rim and make the most of the local eateries and attractions while they’re here for POPera in the Paddock, so the benefits of this event can be shared and celebrated by the community.” Division Three Councillor Virginia West said POPera in the Paddock was planned to become a highly anticipated annual event. “Council has created this unique event for Beechmont and the wider Scenic Rim community that will assist in broadening our credentials beyond the amazing reputation the region

POPera in the Paddock will be held at Hazelwood Estate.

already has for the annual Scenic Rim Eat Local Week and cement the Scenic Rim as a venue for nationally recognised major events,” she said. Claire Northcott of Hazelwood Estate said she looked forward to the property, a 75-acre polo estate and wagyu cattle

farm, being the venue for POPera in the Paddock. “We acutely felt the effects of the devastating bushfires in our region over Spring 2019, with fires right to our property border. We are so pleased to be able to support this event, which has leveraged funds to celebrate our beautiful region and

showcase our vibrant local arts and produce, as part of the bushfire recovery strategy,” she said. Scenic Rim Regional Council is delivering the event in partnership with Queensland Music Festival with funding from the Australian Government’s Regional Tourism Bushfire Recovery Grants.

Beechmont Pioneer Reserve

Recently Scott Buchholz and Jon Krause visited Beechmont Pioneer Reserve and Beechmont Landcare had an opportunity to discuss the future vision for Beechmont area and the many reserves the volunteers care for. Since 2016, the Beechmont Pioneer Reserve has developed from disused dairy pasture and been rehabilitated by the Landcare members.

Beechmont Landcare committee member, Christine Tod said due to the hard work of members and the support of the Australian Government the area is now a wonderful reserve, supporting local flora and fauna, providing habitat, food and water. “The Green Army Project and some $88,000 in funding, has made this possible,” said Christine.

“We showed Scott and Jon Gwingana Reserve, which members are improving with the assistance of a Federal Environment Communities Grant, for the benefit of local wildlife and preserving our local environmental heritage,” she said. To join Beechmont Landcare or to find out more infomation, visit their Facebook page or call Susan on 5533 3358.

How uplifting it has been for us all, and especially the Beechmont residents, to have Binna Burra open again, activities and campsites functioning with visitors returning and even a newly installed Tesla docking station up by Grooms Cottage. ASK THE PHYSIO This is the best exercise for you to do at home to strengthen your core. The dead bug is a common lower back exercise given by physiotherapists, as it is a safe and effective way to strengthen and stabilize your core, spine and back muscles. It improves your posture and helps relieve and prevent low back pain. You’ll also improve your balance and coordination. It’s called the ‘dead bug’ because you will look like a dying cockroach while doing it!

What

muscles

does the dead bug exercise work?

Performed correctly, the dead bug encourages the deep, stabilizing muscles of your low back, abdominals, and hips to engage,

preventing your back from twisting or arching during the exercise.

How

do

I

do it?

Start with lying on your back on a padded mat. If you need to support your neck place a folded towel under your neck and head. • Flatten your lower back against the floor. • Engage your pelvic floor muscles. And maintain this throughout. • Lift your legs, one at a time, into table-top position (90 degrees bend at the knee and 90 degrees bend at the hips). • Lift your arms so that your elbows are above your shoulders and your arms are outstretched. • This is your starting position. • As you breathe in using your diaphragm, slowly lower your right

Dead Bugs arm and left leg until they are 30 centimetres above the floor. Hold this position for about four seconds. • As you breathe out, bring them back to the starting position. • Ensure that your back stays flat against the floor during both movements. • Repeat on the other side with your left arm and right leg. Keep your arms and legs straight and strong, not floppy. You have successfully completed one dead bug.

first couple of reps, but if you keep your core engaged, move slowly and avoid raising your back off the ground, you’ll be surprised how hard it is.

Aim for three sets of three to six reps on each side, or just keep going until the shaking in your abs gets too much. If you are experiencing back pain, please stop the exercise and consult your Physiotherapist.

A Sentimental Canungra Wedding

On Saturday September 26th 2020, Gold Coast couple, Andrew Taylor and Danielle Ward celebrated their love by tying the knot at St Luke’s Church, Canungra. The couple chose to celebrate their day in Canungra as Danielle’s family shares a rich history with the town. In 1946, her great grandparents, James John Jope and Winifred

Sarah Jope, built a small shop and cafe serving 120 meals per day to the Canungra Army Barracks. John James Jope, Syd Rhodes, Roy and John Jope led the original building team. The café, now known as The Outpost Cafe has developed into an iconic Gold Coast tourist destination. Danielle’s grandparents John Noel Jope

and Joy Jope grew up and met in the town and spent many happy years as part of the Canungra community. John and Joy were happily married for almost 60 years when

John sadly passed in late 2018. Danielle feels her grandfather’s presence in the town and wishes to celebrate her wedding there as she feels that he is close by.

The couple held their reception at the Canungra Bowls Club where many Jope family memories have been made and family reunions celebrated annually.

Canungra’s History Toys - 1938 By Joyce Libke

As we lived on a dairy farm and seldom saw other children we three girls made our own fun. Looking back, I remember that close to the house was a gully full of tadpoles. The high clay bank on the south side provided material to build dam walls across the gully (once so successful that the pigs downstream ran out of water). We could also use clay to make sculptures of what ever we fancied, probably dried out and disintegrated a few days later so we just made another one. In the right conditions we had a gully full of tadpoles, this meant that when we caught a mature one with four legs and not much tail, it could be put in an old fruit tin full of water with a stick in it and watched for a day or two until we saw a tiny green frog on the stick. It was always returned to the gully. Prior to Christmas 1936, the family went to Brisbane and Mum kept me and my little brother occupied while Dad and the shop owner secreted our presents in the boot of the car - a red cyclops trike for me and a wheel barrow for Bruce. I have been told that on Christmas morning I looked over the end of my bed and said, “where is Bruce’s barrow?” Because we had a large verandah in our house that trike was mostly ridden upstairs and was seldom left out in the weather. This means it is now waiting in the family room for the fourth generation (our Great Grandchildren) to visit for a ride. It has been repainted and the tyres replaced. Another carefully nurtured treasure was my celluloid baby doll. Because celluloid was so brittle she very quickly had a broken leg and I never Page 28

really played with Judy. She is still sitting on the top of a set of drawers. The dolls we played with were made of composition (like very fine chip board) head and lower arms and legs attached to a material ‘stuffed’ body. Wilhelmina and Peggy could be relied on to fill every role we asked of them: bride, baby etc. Do you a toy older than these? As we grew bigger, another game that could go on for days was ‘chemist shop’. When Mum cooked beetroot she would let us have the cooled red water to set it up. A few old ‘pastels’ crushed and added to the brew would make the bottles of medicines quite revolting. Thinking back, as I was three years older than one sister and seven years older than the youngest, I feel I bagged being the chemist and tried my hardest to get them to drink the concoctions? All this was played in the garden so any that spilt just watered the grass! The Canungra Times – October 2020

NATURE’S GEMS

By Melissa Whitby Whilst growing up on my family’s property at Canungra, there were many bird species that I saw every day. There was always Laughing kookaburras, Willie Wagtails, Butcherbirds and Magpies. One other bird that was always a regular was the Pale-headed Rosella. These birds are easily recognised by their very light pale yellow head, white cheek patches and reddish underparts. In South-east Queensland, there is no other native parrot species

which can be mistaken for Pale-headed Rosellas. There are two distinctive races: palliceps and adscitus. The distribution of the Pale-headed Rosella extends from mid-NSW to the tip of Cape York in Queensland. Throughout their range, the Pale-headed Rosella is a common species and have very localised home territories. Recently, I visited Clermont and I could not believe the number of Pale-headed Rosellas that I saw. I have travelled all over Queensland and can honestly say I have never seen so many!

AWL Pet of the Month

Orwell Orwell is a one year old male short hair and is absolutely gorgeous in looks and nature. He is extremely affectionate and loves smooches, head bumps and being told how good looking he is. He is a very healthy cat and would love to keep it this way by being kept inside of the home - although he would love a secure outdoor enclosure to keep him entertained if you can. Orwell is looking forward to his new forever family where he can have all the smooches and yummy dinners in the world. Please note: All AWLQ rehoming centres are currently closed to the general public and are operating via appointment only. Pale-Headed Rosella (Platycercus Adscitus)

Usually, these birds are seen in pairs or small family groups. They will often feed on the ground and if alarmed, will fly away in their distinctive undulating flight. Suitable habitat for Pale-headed Rosellas includes farmlands, timbered watercourses, woodlands, orchards and gardens. These beautiful birds have learnt to live with humans and if water is provided, will readily come and drink without any fear. Nesting for these birds occurs in the

Spring-Summer months and tree hollows and stumps are the favoured nest sites. However, over the years, I have seen the birds nest in hollow fence posts. At least three to five eggs may be laid and usually all chicks survive to adulthood unless predated upon. As mentioned previously, Pale-headed Rosellas are a bird species which I have grown up with all my life. Over the years, I have travelled all over Australia and overseas

looking at many different bird species. However, it was not until recently that I took the time to appreciate this beautiful Rosella in all its glory. When one takes the time to observe their plumage closely, it is truly stunning. For those wanting to see these birds, talk to people you know around Canungra who have acreage and if happy to do so, they should be easily able to show you this beautiful bird!

Eco Destination Certification

Scenic Rim is one of only six councils in Australia to be selected for potential ECO Destination Certification as part of a program to boost tourism in bushfireaffected regions. Council has endorsed a partnership with Ecotourism Australia, which is working with the World Wide Fund for Nature-Australia to assist regions in their bushfire recovery and offering $30,000 in funding for the Scenic Rim to support a two-year process to obtain ECO Destination Certification. Mayor Greg Christensen said the offer represented an opportunity for the region and aligned with the Scenic Rim Tourism Strategy 2017-2021 and the Scenic Rim Regional Prosperity Strategy 2020-2025. “By becoming a Certified ECO Destination, the Scenic Rim will join an established global network of like-minded destinations striving for ecotourism excellence,” he said. “ECO Destination Certification has previously been identified as a goal for the Scenic Rim and would enhance our region’s tourism offering and credentials, broadening our appeal to the visitors we wish to attract - those who value sustainability and minimal impacts on the natural environment.” “Increasingly, these visitors are demanding authentic, unique and environmentally sustainable experiences.” The Scenic Rim region’s six national parks make it a haven for bushwalkers, naturalists, birdwatchers and those who appreciate spectacular views. Several Scenic Rim-based tourism operators are already ecotourism certified, including Innes Larkin from Mount Barney Lodge, who is Deputy Chair of Ecotourism Australia. Only one other local government area in Queensland, the Douglas Regional Council in Far North Queensland, has so far achieved ECO Destination Certification, making it the world’s first. “Tourism is one of the Scenic Rim’s most important industry sectors, bringing in more than $315 million in visitor expenditure each year, contributing more than $200 million to the region’s Gross Regional Product of $1.9 billion and accounting for more than 2,000 of the region’s 15,500 jobs,” Cr Christensen said.

Plectranthus aka Coleus Plectranthus graveolens is newly reclassified. It is now synonymous with Coleus graveolens. It is usually a sprawling, scrambling forest plant. However, in a moist, protected spot in the garden, it transforms into a beautiful, lush specimen. Suitable for any garden, it can be used to fill gaps or provide variety in a naturalised bush garden, blending beautifully with native Violas, Dianellas, Pseuderanthemum and native grasses in a shady garden nook. It flowers throughout the year and has a beautifully aromatic leaf when crushed. Early European settlers called it the “Five Spice Plant”, referring to its complex aroma, reminiscent of culinary herbs including basil, mint and sage. Also known as Bush Basil, Native Coleus, Mountain Plectranthus, and Sticky Cockspur, this plant was traditionally used as a medicinal and ceremonial herb. This species takes the form of a low-growing shrub reaching up to

By Susan Cully

Plectranthus graveolens

1.5 metres tall with a 2 metre spread. It’s suitable for both garden beds and pots, perfect for decorating edges, occupying narrow beds, or decorating balcony gardens and railings. It produces broad, fuzzy leaves throughout the year, with slender clusters of tiny purple/blue flowers during warmer months. Grow in full sun to partly shaded conditions, in a freely draining soil. Though it will tolerate low nutrient, sandy soils, a loamy potting mix with plenty of organic matter will produce an attractive specimen.

Botanically it is a shrub in the Lamiaceae family, native to New South Wales and Queensland, often found on exposed platforms, ledges, cliffs and outcrops. The Lamiaceae are a family of flowering plants commonly known as the mint or sage family. Many of the plants in this family are aromatic, the family includes basil, rosemary, sage, marjoram, oregano, thyme, and lavender. Identifying plants in nurseries and gardens can be difficult, because members of this genus hybridize readily.

News from St Luke’s By Di Ayscough What an amazing year it has been so far. Can you remember back to New Years Eve and how we all wondered what 2020 would bring? Ten months further along we probably all think, (apart from where has the time gone) how have we managed to survive such an upheaval to our lifestyle. What would you have normally done in the first ten months? Worked hard, socialised with family and friends, enjoyed outings and holidays? The normal things of life. Normality has changed in so many ways and while it is easy to stay in our comfort zone and not want any changes, we have had little choice. But we have coped and now some changes have become normality. This has been a year to make us stop and think. I look at St Luke’s and realise social-distancing has caused some changes but God is still the same God we have always worshipped. I look at God’s creation and little has changed. Spring is here and the flowers are blooming, trees are in blossom, fruit is developing, vegies are growing. New life is happening. God has not changed and despite difficulties we can trust in the Lord and not in our own understanding. On 18th October we will celebrate St Luke’s Day. I wondered why Canungra Anglican church was named after St Luke. Research indicates as our church was dedicated in October, and October is the month to celebrate St Luke’s Day, the local congregation of the day in 1936 voted for this. St Luke was a great physician and historian and his writings give a thorough record of what happened after Jesus ascended to heaven. He wrote about the good news of Jesus Christ. Feel free to join us to celebrate St Luke’s Day. Little Lukies are on School holiday break but will resume on Monday 12th October. Why not send your child to join this happy group straight after school on each Monday of the school term?

Moriarty Park and Canungra Owls Soccer News With Bren Dalby

We are all hoping that one of the many grants we have applied for to purchase a mower comes to fruition soon! Before the grass goes crazy again with all the promised rain (wishful thinking in progress all round)! In the meantime Toby Hall is flying around on his little ride-on mower keeping all in check! Our soccer season is fast drawing to a close with the Under 6’s and Under 12’s playing their last home games on 3rd October at 8.30am. Pop in for a bacon and egg roll and give them a round of applause. Our Mens Metro team has their last home game on Wednesday 14th October at 7pm. This will be a great ending to the season and I hope many will come to get a great atmosphere

happening. Great food available in canteen so make a night of it. FoodWorks have generously provided us with the bacon and eggs on a Saturday morning and have offered whatever we would like ‘on them’ for the last Men’s game. A huge thank you to FoodWorks yet again for their support and generosity. Take a moment to thank them if you can. There has been a bit of nonsense sadly happening around town and not least at Moriarty Park, where on the first day of the school holidays the piping and tap was ripped off the wall causing a fountain of water we can ill afford to lose and a costly exercise to fix. Thanks to George Dalby for rushing down to crimp and weld the pipe in the interim and

thanks to Victoria Lee at the pool for alerting us to the situation and understanding we needed to turn the water off for a while. Can everyone please keep an eye out for any shenanigans and report to me (0414 435 919) or the Police; nothing will be happening at the skate park whilst we have to spend money repairing things.

We hope this is the end of it and we can get cracking with skate park soon. I am meeting with council shortly to discuss further. We have a family of Plovers who still, as of yesterday anyhoo, have four babies. Massive thanks to everyone for being careful around them and giving them a chance; especially delighted to

see all dogs on leash; they are a little annoying to some but are fantastic birds and of course protected as natives. No news yet on trivia nights unfortunately but feeling a little more hopeful that soon ... fingers crossed! Moriarty Park have their meetings on the third Monday each month at 6.45pm and all are welcome to attend.

The Canungra Times – October 2020

SPORT Shimjang Tae Kwon Do Grading It has been a tough year for the Shimjang Tae Kwon Do class at Canungra with classes interrupted due to COVID-19 restrictions. However, six students were able to grade with an external examiner, Assistant Grandmaster Rob Jenson, who travelled from the Gold Coast especially for the grading. Instructor Sarah Hall said the students would usually participate in a combined class grading on the Gold Coast with other Shimjang classes but were not able to this due to Covid restrictions. Instread, the Shimjang Tae Kwon Do Grading was held at Moriarty Park Hall on Thursday 27th August. The students that were able to grade were: • Samuel Hall (Canungra) - graded for brown belt, • Kailee Kinsela (Canungra) - graded for green belt, • Rain Stranger (Canungra) - graded for green belt, • Harry Johnson (Wonglepong) - graded for yellow belt, • Freddy Johnson (Wonglepong)- graded for yellow tip, • Trent Siegertsz (Canungra) - graded for yellow tip. “To be able to attain their higher belts, the students had to demonstrate their belt pattern, show good technique, energy, respect for others and there was some non-contact distance sparring,” said Sarah. The Canungra class runs Monday and Thursday nights at 5.30pm to 6.30pm at Moriarty Park Hall and is taught by Second Dan Black Belt Instructor Sarah Hall.
