Canungra Owls Grand Final Hoot!

Canungra Owls U12 Mixed Team took out the Division Two Grand Final against Mount Tamborine Eagles on Friday 7th September. It was a convincing win, with the Owls overcoming the Eagles 5-2 in a season that might never have been. In January, the Club struggled to field an Under 12 mixed team, but with some last minute additions and a few players shuffled around, the Owls were pleased to submit a full team into Division Two.

“Our U12 Mixed team has had a fantastic year,” said Owls Vice-President Rachel Mathers, “With the Gold Coast hosting the Commonwealth Games, the 2018 season started early and was a long season but they pushed themselves throughout the year.” The U12 Mixed Team remained in the top two teams on the competition ladder and despite losing a couple of games along the way, finished the season as League Champions.

“I have known their coach, Brendan Anthony for a few years now and this season, all of his passion, coaching experience and (mostly controlled) sporting aggression paid off tremendously,” said Rachel. Canungra Owls fielded three teams in Grand Finals, with the U15/16 Girls Division Two team and the U12 Girls Division Two team taking out the runners up place in their divisions.

New Owners for Canungra Op Shop

After almost 10 years under the ownership of Arkwood Christian Association, Canungra Op Shop is under new ownership. A decision was made by to hand the shop over to another organisation due to personal circumstances of some Op Shop committtee members. One of the deciding factors in choosing who would continue operating Canungra Op Shop was the current committee’s desire to see local community support continue. Since opening, Canungra Op Shop has directed almost $125,000 towards local needs including Canungra Owls Soccer Club, Moriarty Park and Canungra Swim Club; as well as support for families in need due to financial need or health problems. They have also contributed $100,000 towards overseas needs. Manager, Caroline Andrew said for the past 18 months the shop has loosely partnered with Lighthouse Community Services (LCS), an organisation based on the Gold Coast and involved in a food bank; free meals for homeless people; op shops at Southport and Currumbin Waters and fundraising for housing for victims of Domestic Violence.

Caroline Andrew, Deb Court, Mark Nurzynski and Jarl Andersson

LCS’s first day of ownership was Sunday 2nd September 2018. They are keen to continue to offer aid locally, which is in line with the work they do on the Gold Coast. “Customers probably won’t notice too many changes in store,” said Caroline. “There is still the same team of volunteers and I will stay on as Manager,” she said. Due to the partnership with LCS, clothing and goods not sold in the Canungra Op Shop

will be utilised at the other Lighthouse Op Shops, or sent overseas to Vanuatu. Unusable items are sold to a recycling organisation. Caroline and the team look forward to continuing to serve the local community. They would like to thank everyone who has been generous in their donations to the store. Dianne Crooks at the 2014 Turning Canungra Pink launch

Why Is Canungra Turning Pink?

The main street of Canungra is awash with pink, shopfronts are fairly vomiting the colour ... but what does it all mean? Turning Canungra Pink in October is an annual event which is run by the Canungra Chamber of Commerce to raise awareness and funds for all types of cancer. This event was started in 2011 by local business owner at the time, Dianne Crooks, herself a breast cancer survivor. Dianne ran raffles and events in her cafe, with the event getting bigger every year. In 2013 the Canungra Chamber of Commerce became involved, creating a fundraising event that lasted throughout October and involved most of the businesses and many residents in the town. In 2015 to 2017 Turning Canungra Pink successfully raised over $20,000 per year and in 2018 that amount doubled to over $45,000 in total for that year alone. All of the funds raised from events held in 2017 split 50/50 between Cancer Council Queensland and a new fund which was created by the Canungra Chamber of Commerce to support local people with cancer. This fund is called Pink Assist. Everyone who works on Turning Canungra Pink is a volunteer - business owners and residents run events and return a set amount or profits (in some cases all proceeds) to Turning Canungra Pink. It is a community of volunteers who are supporting those in our community who need it most.

Beaucare is now in Canungra to service community needs in the local area. Beaucare offer aged care, disability and child care services, family day care and in-home care along with youth and family support, home maintenance services and financial counselling. They will be at the council office next to the library every Monday from 9am till 2pm.

Appointments may be booked on

Rates Re-Evalution

Objections to 2018 land valuations resulted in a reduction in rates for 71 Scenic Rim property owners. In July, in response to community concern about sharp valuation increases, Mayor Greg Christensen called on the Queensland Government to introduce annual rather than three-year land valuations in the Scenic Rim. Of the 20,373 valuations issued this year in the Scenic Rim region, there were 228 objections. “In total, 71 of these objections were successful, resulting in a total reduction of $5.7 million to the overall value of the Scenic Rim region,” Cr Christensen said. “In terms of rating outcomes, the reduction in valuations, which in some cases was quite small, has had minimal impact on Council’s Budget, around $10,000 in total for the 2018-19 year.” The 2017 Market Survey, which was considered in the valuations, showed a 10 per cent increase across most local government areas in Queensland. The State Government has advised that Scenic Rim Regional Council’s request for annual valuations will be considered in conjunction with the 2018 Market Survey and feedback from relevant local and industry groups. “The increase in valuations - in some instances of upwards of 80 per cent on Tamborine Mountain - and many examples of inconsistent valuations across the region show the current system of valuing land is clearly in need of review.” Cr Christensen said.

Telecommunications Tower To Come Online Council has approved a development application for a telecommunications tower at Macdonnel Road, Tamborine Mountain. The Optus tower was approved with conditions including the tower and equipment be painted pale eucalypt green or an equivalent shade to minimise visual impact. Mayor Greg Christensen, who was among five councillors in favour of the development application, said there is a need for improved telecommunications in the Scenic Rim. “This is about providing capable coverage and Optus ensuring reliability of service for their customers moving through the area,” he said, “Optus has provided the same evidence of need as other applicants for similar facilities in the past.” Division 5 Councillor Rick Stanfield said the communications tower would not be inconsistent with Scenic Rim’s town planning moving forward. “We are very much reliant on telecommunications these days, in every aspect of our lives, and will be more so into the future,” he said. “While sometimes we have to deliberate about consistent or inconsistent use, this is about the future vision for the long-term development of this sort of infrastructure for our community. “It is incumbent on us to look at the future instead of looking at a town plan which was written when these sorts of technologies weren’t available.” However Planning and Development Committee Chair and Division 1 Councillor Nigel Waistell voted against the proposal, along with Division 2 Councillor Nadia O’Carroll, saying it had only two supporters but had attracted 142 objections and that the applicant had not provided a needs analysis. Many of the objections sited potential health risks for local residents due to the proximity of the telecommunications tower to residential properties.

Rain No Dampner for Orchid Show

With a hall full of enthusiastic gardeners, there was no one maligning the rain that fell on the first morning of the Beaudesert Districts Orchid and Foliage Society’s Spring Show. At judging time on the eve of the Show, the hall was bedecked with 260 orchid plants and 142 foliage plants vying for the honour of being champion orchid plant and champion foliage plant of the show. With the large number of each type of plant entered into the competition, the judges’ task was not easy. However, the eventual winners were: • Grand Champion Orchid was a Lycaste “Sunray” owned by Bernie You of the Gold Coast. • Champion Foliage Plant was a Huperzia subtriafolia owned by Lee Thorneycroft of Logan. Over 650 people attended the show over the weekend of 15th and 16th September. Not only did visitors enjoy the exhibit but many went home with quality plants bought at a reasonable price from the plant sales area. By the end of the Show there were very few plants left with buyers also bennifitting from the advice of the Orchid Society members at the Show.

Society Secretary, Peter Rice, said the Show is one of the major tourist weekends for Canungra. “People walk around Canungra and sample the eateries which dot the main street,” said Peter, “We have visitors who come from Caloundra, Chinchilla, Pottsville and Stokers Siding outside Murwillumbah just to visit the show and thus stay at the motel and the hotel.”

Fun

To commemorate 25 years of service, Rural Lifestyle Options Australia hosted the first annual 1:5 All Abilities Charity Relay on Saturday 15th September 2018 at the Tamborine Pony Club ground in Tamborine Village. It was a day of family fun to help break the stigma around disability and raise funds for unfunded projects. Many decided to wear fancy dress, and the Tamborine Pony Club entrants supplied their own Fake ponies! In teams of five, entrants needed to complete a 5km relay at the grounds. Each relay participant completed a one kilometre leg of a five kilometre course to highlight the statistic that one in five Australians have a disability. After the relay event, guests were treated to an afternoon of family entertainment including children’s rides, face painting, balloon twisting, food trucks and a live musical performance by T J Macc. All funds raised will assist a person with a disability in rural communities through

Turning Canungra Pink!

Canungra got into the pink spirit early this year with a great group of volunteers literally painting the town mid-September! Samantha Dusting coordinated the town decorations and said it was a fun morning for everyone, starting at 8am and putting up flags as well as painting power poles. “We were all done by midday,” said Sam, “Which was a great effort by everyone.”

Lori’s Lollies

Lori’s Lollies opened on Canungra Show Day - Saturday 25th August but has been part of the plan for Lorelei Consterdine for many years. Lori managed a similar store in England, where she and her husband Thomas are originally from. The family has three young children and Lori’s parents also had shops in England when she was growing up. When the opportunity came along to set up her own lolly shop in Canungra, she jumped at it. In addition to selling all kinds of lollies by weight, Lori’s Lollies also has a great range

of party supplies - from invitations to helium balloons, from pinatas to wrapping paper Lori can supply whatever you need to make your next party a huge success! “I’ve kept our prices competitive with the Gold Coast,” said Lori, “As a mum, I understand how important it is to be competitive in pricing as well as saving my customers time in not having to drive to the Gold Coast to buy the party supplies they need.” “I can also supply lolly bags for parties or order in specifically themed party needs,” she said.

Lori also has a range of children’s gifts, toys and craft, priced to suit a variety of budgets. For customers who just want to drop in after school (or after school drop off) she also has scoop ice-cream in a variety of flavours and can create milkshakes with whatever chocolate bar takes your fancy! Of course the standard milkshake flavours and malt shakes are also available. Lori’s Lollies is located in the Canungra Shopping Centre (next to Canungra FoodWorks). Turning Canungra Pink! The flags are out and the town looks really festive at the moment. Anyone would think there was a major celebration happening. Well, maybe there is. Although I know we are turning pink to raise money and awareness for cancer, we are also celebrating the human decency of people who want to make a difference. Not satisfied with just surviving cancer, Di Crooks started turning her cafe pink in 2011, to help other people affected by cancer. Initially, Di raised funds for Cancer Council Queensland. In 2017 and 2018, with Turning Canungra Pink now run by the Canungra Chamber of Commerce, half the money raised goes to Pink Assist - a local fund which helps people having treatment for cancer. So Di, and the people involved after her, are people who want to make a difference. People who want to help fight something that often seems to be too big for one person to fight - cancer. Together I believe we can make a difference. Whether it is fundraising for money for research or for vouchers given to our friends, family and neighbours who are ill, Turning Canungra Pink makes a huge difference to the people it helps. Join in to celebrate a great initiative and make a difference in your community. Canungra - small town, big heart!

Call Goes Out For Inaugural Eat Local Champions Local food champions will be able to harness a growing hunger for Scenic Rim food and drinks year-round through a new Eat Local Scenic Rim accreditation program. Applications are now open for businesses in the food and beverage, agriculture, hospitality and tourism sectors to engage in yearround promotional activities under the Eat Local Scenic Rim banner. Approved businesses will be able to use Eat Local Scenic Rim branding in shop windows, menus and marketing, and consumers will be able to see where they can find, buy and taste truly local produce. Scenic Rim Mayor Greg Christensen said consumers were hungry for Scenic Rim produce beyond Eat Local Week. “Agriculture is the biggest industry in the Scenic Rim, underpinning the region’s identity and, together with tourism, contributing $630 million to Gross Regional Product,” he said. “The local food movement has grown in size and popularity every year since the first Scenic Rim Eat Local Week in 2011, and the next logical step is to eat local every week.

No single factor started the First World War. Throughout Europe, there had been growing tensions for many years – nationalism, an arms race, disputes over territories and spheres of influence, greed, fear, distrust, and the division of Europe into two hostile alliances all contributed. The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, by Serbian terrorists led to the AustroHungarian invasion of Serbia, on 29 July 1914. Russia mobilised troops to prevent Serbia being crushed. Germany declared war on Russia and, realising that France would support Russia, declared war on France as well. When Germany invaded neutral Belgium, Britain declared war on Germany. Japan, seeing the chance to seize German territory in China, also declared war on Germany. Boonah author Gillian Wells was at Canungra Books and Art on Sunday 23rd September to show off her new book “Possession”. Possession is about Anna, a young woman who doesn’t have the easiest start in life nor a happy relationship with her mother. She grows into a very beautiful, successful, but lonely young businesswoman. She meets an equally successful businessman who sweeps her off her feet. However, he controls her life completely and, as time passes, her life becomes increasingly traumatic and ultimately in danger. How can she escape, and will she ever find the peace and happiness she craves? Possession is available now at Canungra Books and Art.

tries in Europe had become involved in the war. These days, we tend to think of Gallipoli, Palestine and the battles fields of Europe as Australia’s first involvement in the War. Often forgotten, is the Australian Naval and Military Expeditionary Force that attacked and captured vital German communication facilities in German New Guinea and the neighbouring islands of the Bismarck Archipelago in October 1914. For Australia, the First World War remains the costliest conflict in terms of deaths and casualties.

Pink Assist Helping the Locals

Fifty per cent of Turning Canngra Pink funds will be returning to the local community to help Canungra residents battling cancer. A fund established in 2017 and administered by the Canungra Chamber of Commerce, will see half the Turning Canungra Pink funds used to help people who are being treated for cancer. Canungra Chamber of Commerce Treasurer, Delsey Bird, said the fund, called Pink Assist, is about community helping community. “While we understand the importance of supporting Cancer Council Queensland, we also want to help the people who have supported Turning Canungra Pink - the local residents,” said Desley. “Last year Turning Canungra Pink raised over $45,000, half of which went to Pink Assist to fund vouchers for things like gardening, cleaning, fuel and pharmacy expenses,” she said. As the fund has only recently been set up, the Chamber is still looking at the best ways to use the funds to support residents with cancer. “Many people are reluctant to ask for help, but if you or someone you know is going through treatment for cancer, there is help available and personal details will be kept confidential,” she said, “Sometimes assistance with fuel costs, cleaning the house or keeping the garden in check can make a huge difference when a family member is unwell.” Desley said some of the 2017 funds have been given to help several residents over the past year, but she would welcome any enquiries from family or friends who would like to access assistance. One local who accessed the Pink Assist fund last year said, “It was a great help for which I am so grateful. We have amazing help in Canungra. Please say thanks to all.” For more information about Pink Assist, contact Desley on 0412 767 007.

Unwanted Springtime Visitors

Canungra is a popular tourist area in spring, especially if you are a carpet python looking for somewhere good to curl up for a nap! With the warmer weather, from September to February, snakes become more active as they seek out a breeding partner and food. A resident near Canungra Creek has found several carpet pythons investigating her home over the past week. These snakes are nonvenomous and can grow up to four metres in length. They are most commonly found where there is an abundance of food items (for example rats, possums, birds, cats). In this case the resident has a budgie that might have enticed the snake onto the property. The Coastal Carpet Python is one of the most abundant snakes found on properties throughout the Gold Coast, Logan and Scenic Rim region. Carpet Pythons are particularly arboreal and it’s not uncommon to find one curled up in a tree in your backyard. Carpet python bites are not common and generally this type of snake poses little threat to humans or pets (other than smaller birds and mammals). Residents who find a snake on their property are advised not to try to catch or kill the snake. Some snakes that look harmless to the untrained may be highly venomous. Professional snake catchers can be called to remove the snake (see page 36). Snakes are protected by law and attempting to catch or kill protected wildlife can be dangerous and carries a maximum penalty of 5 years behind in prison, or a $77,000 fine. My Health Record – Your Health In Your Hands

Gold Coast resident Sandra Johnston has a number of chronic conditions which is why she finds having a My Health Record invaluable. “I find My Health Record to be extremely beneficial as I see a wide variety of health professionals including six different specialists. Now I have My Health Record, when I go back to the GP I don’t have to worry about remembering medications and test results because I know it’s available,” Sandra said. Some key things to remember about My Health Record: • Your important healthcare information is available online, and easily accessible by you, your doctors, specialists or hospitals. • Because healthcare providers have access to clinical information, they may have a more detailed picture with which to make clinical decisions, diagnose and provide treatment. • In emergency situations, treating doctors can view information such as current medications and allergies.

You don’t need to remember the

dates of tests, medicine names or dosages. •

When moving interstate or travel-

ling, your information can be viewed securely online. •

My Health Record has multi-

layered and strong safeguards in place to protect your information. By the end of 2018, a My Health Record will be created for every Australian, unless they choose to opt out by November 15, 2018. My Health Record staff will be attending a number of local events including Turning Canungra Pink on October 6 and the BeechSandra Johnston finds having a My Health Record invaluable.

Oli placed second in high jump with a jump of 1.25m and is now off to the State Athletics Championships representing the South Coast Region in Cairns in October. What an incredible achievement. All his hard work in lunch time trainings paid off.

SES Visit

By Amy 5M On Wednesday 29th August on the back oval at Canungra State School, the year fives got a special visit from the Tamborine Mountain SES Group. They came to the school to help students learn about natural disasters. They taught us about what to do to help others and what to do when there is a flood. They taught us that in a safety kit we need to have rope, torches, first aid kits, lighters and a tarp. The most important thing to do in a flood is to stay calm and not swim in the water. A huge thanks to Marty, Bill, Sharee, Jess and Navarre for teaching us what to do in a flood.

Red Cross Visit

By Keeley, 5M On Wednesday 5th September, Ros and Abbish, some people from the Australian Red Cross, came to our school and visited 5M and 5O.

The Canungra Times - October 2018

They taught us about some calming and relaxing exercises to do in tricky situations. One of them was to think of your favourite colour or place and breathe in picturing that colour or place and then think of your least favourite colour and breathe out. They also brought heaps of plain, white pillowcases that we decorated with fabric markers. Some people drew their happy places and some people drew some things that would help them to remember what objects to put inside. We got told what sort of things to put into your pillowcase like water, food, first aid kit, something special and a couple of other things. 5M and 5O had an amazing time learning how to stay safe and relaxed in those types of situations.

Rugby League Report

By Steve Moriarty, Rugby League Coach Canungra State School has certainly had a busy few weeks on the rugby league field. On Thursday 30th August, we fielded teams in the Year 4, Open competitive, and Open non-competitive divisions of the Currumbin 9s carnival. All teams acquitted themselves very well with the Open competitive team’s only loss being a narrow 3-2 loss to a massive team from Wynnum State School which saw them officially finish fifth out of 15 teams in that division. On Friday 7th September, our open team competed against teams from St Bernards and Tamborine Mountain in the interschool tackle rugby league competition. Canungra had comfortable wins against both Tamborine and St Bernards in the preliminary matches

Canungra State School

Canungra State School students from Years 4, 5 and 6 with students from St Mary’s Primary School, Beaudesert

which meant that our second game against Tamborine effectively became the grand final. In a hard fought match, Tamborine Mountain threw everything at Canungra but our team dug deep to grind out a 3-2 victory which meant that Canungra have now won this competition 8 years in a row, a fine achievement! Canungra also fielded teams in the Under 10 and Under 12 divisions of the Kingfisher Cup 9 a side competition held at Willis Park in Beaudesert. This competition is for schools from all over the Scenic Rim including Jimboomba, Beaudesert, St Mary’s, Flagstone, Emmaus College, Hills

College, Veresdale, Gleneagle, Woodhill and Tamrookum. Competition was intense over the two days of the carnival and both Canungra teams achieved outstanding results. The Under 10 team experienced only one loss at the carnival and missed making the grand final by a single try on for and against. They defeated Jimboomba 2 by 5 tries to 0 in the play off to finish third in their division. The under 12 team were undefeated in their pool, scoring a total of 26 tries and conceding only three tries. final was played in an atmosphere fitting of a state of origin match with both sides trading tries throughout the game. When the fulltime siren sounded, the scores were locked at three-all with Jimboomba being declared the winners, being the first try scorers in the final. While it was disappointing to come so close to winning the trophy, the team can be very proud of their performance in remaining undefeated throughout the carnival. All players who represented the school in rugby league are to be congratulated on the high standard of play and sportsmanship displayed throughout the year. Well done!

Canungra’s History - Boyland By Joyce Libke Boyland ... Where did the name come from? From the late 1890s a family of Boylands lived on the property where Wagon Wheel Road is today. • In the application to form the Canungera Rifle Club in 1907, among the signatories are William H Boyland and Albert J Boyland both dairy farmers from Boyland. • From The History of Biddaddaba Creek (1999) - The Boyland Railway Station was named in circa 1915 after Tambourine Shire Councillor, George Boyland, who died in 1908. • In the history of the QCWA Wonglepong Branch it states: “with voluntary labour from our menfolk the hall was erected and opened on 4th December 1935 by Mrs Buchannan, President of Central Region. A sports day, organised by Mr Tom Boyland on New Year’s Day resulted in the hall being free of debt”. In the Wonglepong Cemetery are the graves of Tom Boyland and Edith Minnie Boyland. Edith George Thomas Bryans Boyland. Photo supplied by Bill Ferguson. was known as “Sissy”. The Boyland Family had originally farmed (dairy) near Archerfield. There is a small historical cemetery near the airport known as “God’s Acre” where many of the Boyland Family are buried. When visiting this site recently Alison Anderson of the Canungra Historical Society met Bill and Lenore Ferguson. Bill is related to the Boylands and Lenore is a Great-Grand daughter of William Kidston. In 1910, Laheys invited William Kidston, then Premier of Queensland, for the weekend in an effort to persuade him that the Government Railway needed to be extended from Logan Village to Canungra. After the railway opened in 1915, a public auction of the town blocks was held on 2nd May 1916. A poster shows that one of the main streets was named Kidston Street in recognition of the Premier’s assistance. With an interest in history, Bill and Lenore often visit Canungra. During their next visit they will be speaking at the Canungra & District Historical Society meeting to be held on Friday 26th October at Canungra Showgrounds at 1.00pm. RSVP to Alison Anderson on 0417 742 590.

Beaudesert Aged Care Facility Approved

Council has approved an aged care facility for a portion of land which was previously earmarked by the developer for residential allotments at Beaudesert. The proposed Seasons aged care complex at Hawthorn Street will incorporate a total of 129 twobedroom, single storey self-contained homes to meet the demand for a degree of independent living by elderly members of the community. Council approved the development with the condition that it include additional car spaces as a number of elderly residents would still own cars and staff and visitors to the facility would require parking,. Division 3 Councillor Virginia West welcomed the proposal as providing accommodation options for older community members close to Beaudesert town centre and employment opportunities within the Scenic Rim. “Developments such as this are very positive for Beaudesert and the surrounding area as we don’t have a great deal of aged care facilities in this area,” she said. “The issue of car parking was an important consideration because the last thing we would want is to have people parking out in the streets and disrupting the community.” Mayor Greg Christensen left the Chamber for the discussion and decision making around the proposal, citing a potential perceived conflict of interest as a family member could be involved in the development. Planning and Development Committee Chair Cr Nigel Waistell said aged care facilities were needed in the Scenic Rim. “As long as they are built with sensitivity to the requirements of the region they should be supported,” he said.

Nature’s Gems

Proboscis Monkey (Nasalis larvatus) By Melissa Whitby Several months ago, I travelled to Malaysian Borneo to see the incredible wildlife that calls the island home. Malaysian Borneo is home to some wildlife species that cannot be found anywhere else in the world. One of the mammal species, which I was keen to observe, was the Proboscis Monkey. This unusual looking primate is only found on the island of Borneo. It is easily recognised from other primate species in Borneo by its bulbous nose, orangecoloured fur on the head and shoulders and pale white underparts. Male animals are considerably larger than females. I was lucky enough to see Proboscis Monkeys along the Kinabatangan River in the Sabah region of Malaysian Borneo. The monkeys that I observed travelled in small family groups with a dominant male along the riverbanks. The preferred habitat of the Proboscis Monkeys is along rivers and coastal mangroves and they rarely venture out of these environments. As the monkeys move along these semi-aquatic environments, they forage for leaves, fruit and seeds. Proboscis Monkeys are able to swim which enables them to move easily beside riverine forests and mangroves. The numbers of Proboscis Monkey has declined rapidly in Borneo in recent times and much of this can be attributed to the loss of their habitat. Throughout the island of Borneo, much of the wildlife has suffered due to severe habitat loss. The future of Borneo now lies with protecting the remaining habitat and connecting these areas so that wildlife can move between them. For those of us here in the Australia, the best way to help protect the wildlife and wild areas in Borneo is too ensure that all products that we use from Borneo are sustainably produced. Also, travelling to Borneo to support conservation programs and local legitimate eco-tourism helps provide the local economy with revenue that in turn elevates protection of conservation areas. This can be seen in the region of Sabah in Malaysian Borneo. I hope that I have inspired some who have read this article to travel to Borneo to see its incredible biodiversity.

Rufous Bettong

A Spot of Carp Busting

Aepyprymnus rufescens By Susan Cully Bettongs are marsupials belonging to the family Potoroidae. Along with Potoroos and Rat-Kangaroos (not to be confused with Kangaroo Rats!) they are rodent-like in appearance, jump like a very small wallaby and have a pouch for their young. They Rufous Bettong. Photo courtesy: are cousins of the Kangaroos Queensland Museum and the Wallabies: some believe them to be ancestral to that group. The Rufous Bettong weighs between 3 and 4 kilos. It is the largest of the Potoroidae. The ‘salt and pepper’ fur, reddish-brown flecked with pale grey, dark grey and red flecks characterizes their appearance. The nose is bare with a hairy muzzle and face. The skin shows through the thinly furred eye area. The belly and forepaws are light coloured. The Rufous Bettong lives in a variety of forest types including open woodland and tussock grass understorey environments. It constructs cone-shaped nests of grass in shallow depressions at the base of fallen logs. It prefers a cover of tall native grasses for shelter. It favours a healthy understorey of native grasses, particularly Bladey Grass (Imperata cylindrica) and various species of Poa. These grass species are often undervalued and treated with herbicide and random burning by landowners. Being a ground dweller, the Bettong is vulnerable to predation by cats, dogs, and foxes. Its habitat is largely undervalued and subject to clearing; the timing of fire regimes is important to its survival. It competes with introduced rabbits and hares. Bettongs are herbivorous, eating plant material: herbs, seeds, flowers, roots, tubers and some insects. They are known to eat the fruiting bodies of fungi, a valuable food source in their dry environment. Locally threatened, there are still populations to be found from North Queensland to mid-New South Wales.

Young local fisherman Taylor Graham caught some very good sized carp in the Canungra Creek in September. Carp are an introduced species that cause a lot of damage to our waterways. Taylor is pictued below with a 75cm carp. He also caught a 53 cm carp.

News from St Luke’s By Di Ayscough With the school holidays now over, I hope so our local children relaxed and enjoyed their break. Hopefully they all enjoyed their pets too. We have just celebrated “Pet Blessing Sunday” at St Luke’s. We welcome on a regular basis, a little dog or two, but blessing our pets is an important time to be grateful for the love we receive from these little friends. Coming up in the next month or two, is a busy time for Canungra with “Turning Canungra Pink” already to progress. St Luke’s will be turned pink and will be open for anyone to have a look inside on Saturday 6th October or to just take a moment to say a prayer for a friend, a relative or just someone you know who is affected by cancer. This will tie in with the Pink activities taking place next door in D J Smith park. On 28th October, as Canungra celebrates the centenary of the Showgrounds, St Luke’s will join with the Wonglepong CWA to hold a traditional English Tea Room and cake stall. This will be a day not to be missed. A special fundraising Dinner will be held on Tamborine Mountain Monday 15th October to raise much needed financial support for our local School Chaplaincy program. As we witness the many problems our communities and country face, including climate change, drought, depression and sadness, the importance of providing Christian love, support and hope for the future is paramount. We are very grateful for the opportunity to send volunteers into our schools and this dinner is vital to raise the necessary funding to cover the requirements. Should you be interested in attending please contact me for details: diane.ayscough@bigpond. com. Do you realise it is less than 100 days till Christmas? Instead of spending our usual amount of money buying gifts and extra food, it would be wonderful if we all contributed some extra money to Drought Relief.

FORE Your Information - Golf Club News Canungra Area Golf Club news with Kim Sami • The Canungra Ladies Open Day was a huge success with 48 players coming from 10 clubs from around the Gold Coast and Scenic Rim. Delicious food, faffle Prizes and lots of winners and grinners made for a very happy day – complete with perfect weather. • The Monthly Veteran Stableford events are still proving very popular with a good field of players competing on the third Monday of each month. All Veteran Golfers are welcome. • Construction work will commence very soon around the Clubhouse as well as on the course as we start building a new machinery and cart shed as well as upgrade the golf course. • Mark your calendars for Saturday 27th October for our crazy Pink Golf Ambrose Day in conjunction with the Turning Canungra Pink Festivities and proudly sponsored by The Shoe Vault. • The Canungra Open will be held on Saturday 17th November with many thanks to our major sponsors - Fujiclean and Binna Burra Lodge. • It has been great to see some friendly games of Skins taking place after the official days comp. Several of the players enjoy three holes in the long shadows of the afternoon, sharing jokes, badgering each other and generally having a good time.

Moriarty Park News By Bren Dalby Lots of grant applications in the offing for MP and some of their user groups. We need new cricket nets, a new zero turn mower and new kitchen facilitien but highest on agenda is a new locking/online ordering system for our tennis courts and the fixing of the perimeter fence that some people have seen fit to destroy to gain access. We are also going to incorporate a wall so practice can also be done when a partner is unavailable. So, lots happening and we hope more functions booked so we can get on with our advancements! A Facebook page has been created by Alesia McCabe so happenings can be easily seen and indeed advertised. Our website launch draws closer too …watch this space! Thanks to all who help, use and treat Moriarty Park with respect; it is a great facility and hopefully will become even greater ! A HALLOWEEN disco will be held at MP most likely the first Friday in November due to a crazy amount of things happening the last weekend in October with Turning Canungra Pink. Watch Foodworks noticeboard for this aswell as Facebook and the school newsletter. Huge thank you to Canungra Owls Soccer Club for the raffle they ran for the Bren Dalby Soccer Carnival with the proceeds

donated to the Burrumbuttock Hayrunners Drought Appeal. Bren ran the raffle for the Club and to maximise benefit asked Tony and Anne from Foodworks if they could run a sausage sizzle at Foodworks in conjunction with this appeal. As usual they were supportive and provided everything needed for the sausage sizzle. Thanks to the Canungra Bowls Club for providing the BBQ and directing all bowls players on the day to buy a sausage! Thanks to Rachel and Dave Aitken and Ange and Lauren McGrotty as well as George and Bren for manning the BBQ. Over the two days $1015.45 was raised and passed on to the Hayrunners through Sydney Rotary. Raffle prizes were donated by Go Ballooning, Foodworks, Flessers Bakery, My Country Escape and Bean Inn.

We have just had the end of series presentation at the Southport Yacht Club where Jonah was awarded first place for the 2017-2018 South-East Queensland O’Pen Bic series. Unfortunately Jonah missed the Queensland State titles due to traveling overseas (visiting family), however he still has a busy schedule ahead with this year’s South-East

Owls Teams Finish Season in Style

For the Canungra Owl’s junior players, 2018 was definitely their year. The U15/16 girls team was crowned League Champions (finished the season on top of the ladder) and the U12 girls team improved in every round. Both teams made their debut grand final appearance and in two close games, were the runners up in both divisions. Canungra Owls Vice President, Rachel Mathers said both teams have finished the season with something much more important than a title.

“Both teams have worked their hearts out,” said Rachel, “Their commitment and sportsmanship has been outstanding and this has led to a great result for both teams. We are all very proud of each player for what they have achieved personally and in their games this year.” “Soccer skills, friendship and the ability to work as a team are a few of the obvious learned qualities; on top of these, these players have learned how to overcome adversity,” she said.

“The stresses, expectation and sometimes complete focus that society places on just one game is a huge burden to bear.” “Without realising it, these young women will head into other life experiences knowing not everything goes according to plan and will have a head start with the mental challenges they face when dealing with tough situations,” said Rachel. Canungra Owls are now looking forward to an exciting 2019 season…hoot hoot!
