ANZAC

Day

Across Australia, ANZAC Day 2020 was different. With COVID-19 restrictions in place, people took up the call to commemorate ANZAC Day at home, in their driveways. There were people dressed in uniforms, with medals, in their dressing gowns and with the front yards decorated. Some listened to the ANZAC Day service that was broadcast from the Australian War Memorial in Canberra, with others quietly remembering. It was moving and emotional. President of the Canungra RSL Sub Branch, Col Lee, said both local bugler Tim Hunt, and bagpiper Bren Dalby, arrived at the Cenotaph in D J Smith Park, Canungra, early on ANZAC Day morning. Col said he spent the morning in D J Smith Park, where a small number of people had laid wreaths in the days leading up to ANZAC Day and on the day itself. “All went well at the park and right throughout the community,” said Col. Canungra State School Captains Cooper Crook and Amy Consterdine went to D J Smith Park on Thursday 23rd April to recite a poem, ‘A Soldier Died Alone’, and lay a wreath on behalf of the School. In Boyland, veterans William and John Brown stood in the driveway of William’s home in the early hours of the morning to remember ANZAC Day. Both men had served. William was in the 3rd Battalion Royal Australian Regiment and served in East Timor in 2002 and 2006. John was in the ADF MTF-3 and served in Afghanistan in 2011-12. In the driveway, with the sun rising behind them, Bill held a candle and said they would

stand and reflect on those who had served and those who had given their lives. In the Canungra Valley, the sounds of bugler Elton Farmer playing the Last Post echoed through the Valley. “This was the first time in 33 years I haven’t played the Last Post and Rouse for Coorparoo RSL, where I grew up,” said Elton. “I loved how the sound echoed through the valley and was at times drowned out by bird calls!” Elton’s grandfather, Lawrence Jefferies, served in 101st Howitzer Brigade on the Western Front in WW1.

Throughout the Canungra and Beechmont, residents lit candles, displayed the Australian flag or set up ANZAC memorials on their front lawns. Col Lee said while it would have been a difficult day for many veterans who normally would be spending the day together with friends and family, he was encouraged by the show of support in Canungra and around Australia. “Without a doubt this would have to be the most emotional day I have ever been involved in,” he said.

Conducting 100 Acts of Drew Salem gave up an influential and highly paid executive career in the corporate world to produce free films about charities and individuals with profound stories. Drew says he had become weary of a materialistic and unfulfilling lifestyle. “I realised my ‘normal’ was getting dressed in clothes I buy for work, driving through traffic in a car I was is still paying for in order to get to the job I need to pay for the clothes and car and the home that’s empty all day just so that I can afford to live in it,” said Drew. “A voice inside me was telling me that a year from now, I would have wished I started today,” he said, “I came up with a plan to downsize our home and sacrifice materialistic luxuries to allow time to reconnect with myself and family. I resigned from my executive role at one of Australia’s biggest food manufacturing companies to focus on things I love in life - philanthropy and cinematography. I brought the two together to create a Film Production company called 100 Acts of Kindness Films.” Drew has since been making free promotional movies for those in need. These have included promotional videos for businesses

in the Scenic Rim that have struggled initially due to bushfires, and now COVID-19. Some of these businesses have used the films straight away, some are waiting for normality to return before they use them, for when standing out will be important. Drew is working on three movies right now, and has another seven lined up. He estimates he has capacity for another five free movies, before his resources run out.

“Most businesses are struggling. But if each of us recognise our strengths and reach out to help each other without expecting anything in return, we will grow stronger as a community and get through the hardest of times,” said Drew. Scenic Rim businesses can apply to have Drew make a free promotional film for them via 100actsofkindness.org, where they will go into a draw for the remaining five slots.

Another

Champion Fighter Isolated following Win

Two years ago local Muay Thai fighter Joshua Torrens was in top form and controlling his fights. However, with one shot he was unlucky enough to lose due to a knock out. His confidence was affected, and he subsequently took time off to concentrate on finishing his schooling. When the fighters from Canungra were heading to Thailand to fight for a WMO World Title in controlled, padded and well matched fights, Josh stepped up his training again. Due to COVID-19 most of the fighters were unable to attend, with many fights cancelled. However, Josh and his father David (who is also Josh’s Coach) were still able to travel to Thailand so that Josh could compete. Walking into Bangla stadium in Thailand Josh believed he was just going in for an everyday fight against a Thai fighter, which in their own home turf is a difficult enough task. It soon became apparent that Josh’s game had been stepped up. His name now appeared on the fight card as a title fight after a last minute pull out.

World

Josh Torrens following the world title fight in Thailand

Josh climbed the ropes under the watchful eye of his father and fought a much older Russian to win the World Title with a knockout. Josh adds this to the list of four MTA Australian titles, two Siam Cup Australian titles and international Siam cup title.

Josh says once the gyms are allowed to open back up he is keen to get back into training and fight for more titles to bring back to his home town of Canungra. Josh and David self-isolated for two weeks upon returning to Australia, to comply with the COVID-19 regulations that were brought in while they were overseas.

Safety Improvements on Christie Street Pedestrian safety will soon be improved as the Department of Transport and Main Roads starts work on town entry treatments on Beaudesert-Nerang Road and a pedestrian crossing in Christie Street this week. Member for Scenic Rim, Jon Krause said both he and Cr Virginia West have spent several years lobbying for pedestrian safety and other improvements to the entry to Canungra. “I’m pleased to announce that works are getting underway,” said Jon, “Persistence has paid off!” “Of particular interest to many is the pedestrian crossing upgrade between Canungra State School and the local ambulance station,” he said, “I know that this has

been welcomed by all – I’d like to thank Cr Virginia West for her support, and all members of the community for raising this important issue time and time again with me so that I could keep it on the agenda.” TMR received feedback from several members of the community, as well as the Canungra Chamber of Commerce in response to early plans for two pedestrian crossings and town entry statements. Works to be undertaken in and around Canungra include: • Vegetation maintenance, pavement repairs and new surface treatment to improve skid resistance on the descent into the township

• Town entry treatments on both approaches to the township including line marking and large speed zone signs • Upgrade to the pedestrian refuge outside the Canungra State School to a raised zebra crossing with additional street lighting • Changes to line marking with left turn arrows into Canungra Street • Vegetation maintenance near Coburg Road to improve sign visibility A spokesperson from Department of Transport and Main Roads said the proposed raised zebra crossing on Christie Street near D J Smith Memorial Park will not be installed at this time.

Show and Rodeo Cancelled

The 2020 Canungra Rodeo and Show have been cancelled due to COVID-19 ongoing restrictions. Canungra AH&I Society President, Roly Ethell said the call was in line with other rodeos and agricultural shows across the country in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. “I would like to thank the businesses and community members who have supported our events in the past,” said Roly, “We will start planning now for 2021 to ensure we come back next year with two top quality events for Canungra.” “We had consulted with our volunteers and stewards prior to the meeting,” he said, “Logistically, even if some restrictions were lifted prior to July and August it would not be possible to plan and run our events which attract over 6,000 people. We want everyone to stay healthy and safe this year.”

The Tamborine Village Lions wish to thank all those gave their time, products and services to see through a special project of the Lions Shed for the storage of the Club’s equipment. Should I See an Osteo if I have Headaches? By Dr. John-Paul Lo Giudice (Osteopath) Have you ever had a headache? I’d be surprised if you said no, because a headache is one of the most common symptoms experienced by our species. Nearly everyone at some point in their life experiences a headache. The list of headache types is as long as the distance between your shoulder and the tips of your fingers! Some types of headache are very common, others very rare. Some of the different types of headache include: • Tension-type, • Migraine, • Cervicogenic (ie something in the neck leading to pain felt at the head), • Eyestrain, • Withdrawal, • Dehydration, • Temporomandibular joint dysfunction (ie a problem with the jaw joint causing head pain).

The Burning Question

If you have been a headache sufferer for a long time, there is a good chance you have tried every remedy out there. Finding a solution is hard, but fear not, help is at hand! At Grassroots Healthcare, we regularly get asked “can you help me with my headaches?” The answer is always “maybe”, but there is a good chance we can. So why see an osteo over another medical professional? The short answer is we’re awesome! The long answer is we are experts of anatomy of the human body (five years of study and two degrees). We listen to you tell your story, have excellent problem-solving and clinical skills, have soft, caring hands, and trained to help people get to the bottom of their ailments, headaches included. Other medical professionals are also awesome, we just love the osteopathic philosophy of treating the person and the body as a whole.

What

to

Expect

from an

Osteo

The reason a person is in pain is usually due to many factors. It is therefore very important to get a full story from each patient that presents with a problem. This is where we shine. Your initial consultation will entail a very thorough questioning session where we ask you lots of questions about your current issue, the history surrounding it, and other questions relating to your medical, lifestyle and work history. From the word go, we will be painting a picture of what is going on with you. From the information you give us and the questions we ask, we will be ruling in or out which type of headache you could be experiencing. Page 14

An Osteopath can help with headaches

Some types of headache have very specific features and we may be able to come to a conclusion quite quickly. Other types may be less easy to recognise, but by the end of the questioning we will have a list of conditions in our mind that we need to test for. This is where we perform our clinical tests. Some of the more common types of headache are due to problems relating to the muscles and joints around the neck and head region, so we’ll ask if we can feel these areas. We’ll watch you move, then we’ll move you around, feel and compare between the two. We may need to test the nerves that give your head and neck their function, or we may need to take your blood pressure … either way, we can do it all. For headaches, we will be particularly interested in what your head, neck, midback, shoulders and posture look and feel like and how everything moves together. We will always be looking at the bigger picture though, so if you’re wondering why we’re checking the levels of your pelvis or the length of your legs, it’s because we’re searching for every possible reason as to why your headache is occurring. After careful consideration and once we are happy with our diagnosis, we will sit and

The Canungra Times - May 2020

have a chat about what is going on and what the plan is to get you feeling good again. At this point we’ll get to work on your body using the many techniques we have at our disposal. We will also offer advice on any lifestyle changes you may need to make to ensure the headache is being helped from all angles. Sometimes a headache can be the sign of a more serious problem that we may not be able to help you with. If this is the case, we will ensure you are directed towards the right people for the job.

Final

comments

If you or anyone you know is experiencing headaches, please pick up the phone and call us on 5543 4254. Now you know what we can do to help, we hope the next time you ask the question “Should I see an osteo if I have headaches?”, your answer will be a solid YES! For more information or to book an appointment visit grassrootshealthcare.com.au. **Osteopaths are deemed an ‘essential service’. We are currently open on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. We have strict clinical hygiene practices.

When Canungra Answered the Call By David Baker The name ‘H W Cooke’ is inscribed on the Canungra War Memorial in D J Smith Park, listed with many other names of young men who enlisted from the Canungra district to serve in World War 1. Private Herbert Cooke landed at ANZAC Cove on the Gallipoli peninsula on the morning of 26th April 1915, a day after the initial ill fated landing. He died four days later. He was only 21 years old. On 29th April and under the command of Captain Hugh Quinn, tasked with holding the strategic position at the head of Monash Valley, named Quinn’s Post, arguably at that time the most dangerous position on the peninsula, Herbert was killed in action on 30th April. He was buried that day on the side of the hill to the right of the ANZAC landing in what we know as Beach Cemetery, a beautiful resting place overlooking the azure Aegean Sea. The full details of Herbert’s service record and the circumstances of his demise were uncovered in meticulous research by Lisa Stubbs who worked tirelessly on the Canungra Answered the Call Centenary of Anzac Project commissioned by the Canungra RSL Sub Branch.

Private H W Cooke’s gravesite on the Gallipoli Peninsula

The canungraansweredthecall.org.au website features a roll of honour of those men from the district who answered the call to arms in WW1 serves as a perpetual memorial to those who served and to those who paid the ultimate sacrifice. In September 2015, I was privileged to visit the peninsula and to place a poppy and a cross of remembrance at his gravesite on behalf of the people of Canungra and his family. A nearby memorial is inscribed with the words :

Those heroes that shed their blood and lost their lives ... You are now lying in the soil of a friendly country. Therefore rest in peace. There is no difference between the Johnnies and the Mehmets to us where they lie side by side here in this country of ours ... You, the mothers who sent their sons from faraway countries, wipe away your tears; your sons are now lying in our bosom and are in peace. After having lost their lives on this land they have become our sons as well. We Will Remember Them

For the first time in many years, I didn’t go to an ANZAC Day service at D J Smith Park. Instead, I arrived early at William (Bill) Brown’s property in Boyland and then travelled on to Picnic Place, before heading to work in the office for the morning. As Bill said that morning, there would be very few Australians who don’t have a connection to someone who served or lost their lives in war. It is something I hope we all remember, because the loss of life, particularly during the World Wars, was devastating. So it was an emotional walk up through Picnic Place for me. Seeing people of all ages, children with their families, through to Jan Berry (sorry Jan I don’t know how old you are but you would be been amongst the older ones there); people in uniform, with medals and still in their pyjamas; all paying their respects was one of the most surreal and moving things I have seen. It is a testament to human nature and the Australian spirit, that we do not give up easily. Can’t gather together in a park to remember our fallen soldiers? Fine, we’re standing in the driveway. To be honest, it seems a very Australian way to do it. I have to admit, I was wiping tears away that morning, seeing the commitment of our community to this important tradition. We shall remember them.

Canungra Op Shop Manager, Caroline Andrews said due to the ongoing lockdown that Queensland is experiencing, the Canungra Op Shop remains closed. “Because most of the volunteers are over 50 years of age, for their safety and for their families’ peace of mind they are not able to continue their normal tasks,” said Caroline. “Therefore, during this closure phase, we ask that everyone cease giving donations as we are unable to process them. If possible, please put them aside and when we are able to open the shop again, your donations will be much appreciated,” she said. “If you are unable to keep your items they will unfortunately need to go straight to the local Waste Transfer station.” The Canungra Op Shop is on Facebook and the website canungraopshop.org.au is active. The Op Shop is a charity that donates and supports members of the local community regularly through vouchers and assistance paying for utilities when needed. They also support community organisations through sponsorship. The Caroline has asked that people contact the Op Shop via Facebook or the website, should they need any emergency assistance. “We would like to thank the community for working with us and for their cooperation,” said Caroline, “We are looking forward to being able to open in the future and resume normal operation.”

A Dream Come True at Witheren

It was a long held dream of Ray Hughes to establish a neighbourhood garden, and it took a pandemic to bring his dream to fruition. Over the past few months, there has been a greater interest in self-sufficiency, with more people planting vegetable gardens in their backyards and an increased interest in raising chickens, but the newly established Witheren Gardens has been in the pipeline for a number of years. Ray and his wife Julie said they wanted to create a space where people could meet and enjoy working in the garden together. Just prior to COVID-19 restrictions were brought in, Julie began gathering the materials needed to establish the garden. Keeping within COVID-19 safety guidelines, neighbours brought in mulch, soil, plants, gates and fencing materials. The garden now has four beds established with a variety of plants growing as well as a composting system. Julie also established the Witheren Produce Swap, Buy & Sell Facebook page at the end of March. The page connects people in Witheren and surrounds who want to swap locally grown produce, seedlings and plants. Danielle

King also came on board to assist Julie as an admin on the page as the group grew. In the space of a month, Witheren Produce Swap, Buy & Sell has over 150 members who regularly swap produce, recipes, ideas and tips on gardening and raising chickens. The group is restricted to people living within the local area.

The Canungra Times - May 2020

Julie says an added bonus has been the social interaction between members of the Facebook page and the garden. “At a time when we aren’t able to connect in person I’ve had people say they’ve ‘met’ (via Facebook) more people in the last few weeks than they have in the rest of the time they’ve lived in Canungra,” said Julie.

Adapting to Funeral Changes

Government directives on social distancing and limiting the number of people attending funerals have meant significant changes to funeral services in Australia. Leigh Thompson of Thompson’s Funerals on Tamborine Mountain, says a funeral is a time when it is natural for people to greet and console each other with a hug, kiss or handshake. “This is a heartbreaking and challenging time for people and we thank you for your understanding as we adapt our services to these changes,” said Leigh. The restrictions allow 10 people plus the funeral attendants to attend a funeral, exercising social distancing. “Given the new regulations, many people are choosing to have a private funeral and a memorial service or celebration to be held at a later date when some of the restrictions will be lifted,” said Leigh. Private, non-attended, no service cremations have become the most common and Thompson’s Funerals have set a special package price for all inclusive for non attended cremations for people living in the Scenic Rim. “The health, safety and wellbeing of the families we serve is of the utmost importance to us,” said Leigh, “We are committed to helping families farewell their loved ones respectfully and within the current and relevant government advice and regulations. In line with these regulations, Leigh and his wife Linda have also implemented the following changes to their family owned funeral business: • Where possible, ring and make an appointment to see Leigh or Linda at their Tamborine Mountain office. Unfortunately, they may not be able to see families immediately without an appointment. • There are times and days that the office is unattended. • The phones will be attended 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Leigh says these changes are necessary to protect the wellbeing of the community, however he and Linda are looking forward to kinder and better times ahead. For enquiries please call Thompson’s Funerals on 5545 1974 or 0447 203 750.

Community Steps Up to Make Masks

The Canungra community quickly responded to a request from Canungra Valley Medical for masks for everyone entering the practice in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. With limited mask supplies across Australia, the practice asked people to assist by making masks. Many of the residents who had been involved in sewing pouches for wildlife during the bushfires began sharing patterns and gathering supplies to ensure the Canungra community would be kept safe. Loretta Mineo coordinated sewers in the area and created a Canungra Mask Makers Facebook page. In addition to Loretta, Belinda Pearl, Vicki Rayner, Robyn Mahony and Courtney Guerin have been instrumental in supplying masks for Canungra Valley Medical. They have relied on donations of material, elastic and thread but have also bought much of the supplies themselves. Loretta said Kerry St Clair, Sue Kenna, Samantha Hampson, Julie and Mike from Fabric Frenzy in Nerang had donated materials for the masks. Canungra Valley Medical Practice Manager, Julie said Dr Dave and all the doctors at the practice really appreciated the support of the community. “They were all amazed at the support given,” she said.

Obtain a Permit Before You Light Up Canungra Rural Fire Service is urging residents to obtain a fire permit prior to lighting outdoor fires. Canungra Rural Fire Brigade Secretary, Jamie Gallagher, said it is important residents contact their local Fire Warden before lighting outdoor fires. “After experiencing some of the worst fires in living memory in Canungra and Beechmont areas in 2019, it is now more important than ever that people understand their responsibilities, and legal obligations, before lighting any outdoor fires,” said Jamie. In Queensland, apart from some exemptions, it is illegal to light a fire in the open without a Permit to Light Fire (Permit). Fires that are exempt are: • Less than two metres in any direction. Note: These fires are not exempt during a Fire Danger Period and a permit must be obtained from a Fire Warden during those times. • Lit outdoors in a properly prepared fireplace for the purpose of cooking (eg BBQ and camp fires). Jamie said an Application for a Permit to Light Fire can be downloaded from the RFS website www.ruralfire.qld.gov.au. Alternatively, copies are available from local Fire Wardens. Rural Fire Service Regional Manager Alan Gillespie urged south east Queensland residents to do their part to prepare the community for the season ahead. “Bushfire season will be upon us before we know it so it’s important we act now,” Mr Gillespie said. “There are many simple ways to ensure your property is in order - regularly mow

your lawn, trim low hanging branches, clean gutters and remove any flammable material from around your house. “There are also extra measures rural landowners can undertake, including creating and maintaining firebreaks, ensuring your own firefighting equipment is in working order and conducting hazard reduction burns.” Mr Gillespie said residents are responsible for managing the fuel loads on their properties, so for some, conducting hazard reduction burns was essential. “If the burn exceeds two meters squared in size, you must obtain a Permit to Light Fire” he said. “Permits are free, easy to apply for and are important to ensure your burn is conducted safely.

Please note: Some businesses are affected by restrictions brought in due to COVID-19. Please check current Government restrictions as they are changing rapidly.

“It is essential the RFS is aware of your planned burn to ensure crews aren’t responding to a controlled burn as if it’s an emergency. An Australian in London By Josh Baker

Josh has lived most of his life in Canungra. He attended Canungra State School and moved to Canberra to attend university before relocating to the UK for study. I travelled to London in September of 2019 to begin my university studies and upon arriving at my accommodation in London Bridge I recall the bustling, chaotic nature of London. It became apparent to me very quickly that London was a city that never slept. Particularly in Central London, there was always something happening, always something to do and always people on the streets. It really is a metropolis in every sense of the word; it’s a well-oiled machine that very rarely, if ever, stops working or stops moving. However, fast forward six months and that’s exactly what has happened. Of course, the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic isn’t limited to London; the vast majority of the world is no longer functioning normally, both economically and socially. However, below is a recount of my experiences living, travelling and quarantining in London and Australia during the COVID-19 pandemic. I took a particular interest in the virus from an early stage; following the news from China, as maybe many of us did. Yet I followed the news with a sense of naivety and ignorance, again, like many of us I thought it would follow the pattern of viruses like Ebola in the sense that it won’t affect me and I will stop hearing about it after a while.

Josh Baker in London prior to coming home.

Nevertheless, eventually the spread of the virus exploded and Europe was the new epicentre with countries like Italy and Spain feeling the devastating impact of this virus on their healthcare systems and their societies as a whole. It all became quite real for me when London entered stage one of its police enforced lockdown around mid-March. The Borough in which I lived had the most cases in the city and very seldom people went out. I remember walking across London Bridge and through Bank at midnight and bar one or two cars on the bridge, I was the only person out. This was an incredibly surreal feeling in what is usually one of London’s busiest thoroughfares even at midnight. At this point I had made no plans to come home to Australia early, despite my university having closed and all assessment to be completed online. I didn’t feel unsafe living in London as I didn’t need to leave my flat very often and when I did I was able to take precautions like wearing a surgical mask.

The general feeling amongst the public was a combination of uncertainty and panic. Many of the people I spoke to were concerned about the health of their parents and grandparents as well as food supplies and essentials, as the majority of supermarkets in many areas of London had been wiped clean of items such as pasta, rice, toilet paper and various other sanitary products. The UK and the rest of Europe hadn’t seen restrictions like these since “the War” and hadn’t seen economic turmoil of the like since The Great Depression of 1929. The situation in the UK at this time was much like where we are at now in Australia – uncertainty, slight panic but yet to feel the devastating impact of the virus in terms of the amount of cases and subsequent deaths that many other nations were being inundated by. As I learned of the many travel restrictions being enforced by governments worldwide to try and slow the spread of the virus, it became clear that there was likely a short window of time in which I would be able to get a flight home without any problems arising due to border restrictions. With many of my friends heading home to various countries worldwide, I decided to leave for home and booked a flight departing on 24th March, with a short stopover in Singapore before continuing on to Brisbane. Upon arriving at Heathrow and attempting to check-in to the flight on the morning of the 24th, I was told that as of midnight the night prior, Singapore had prohibited all entry and transit of foreign travellers. So I went airline to airline in Terminal Two looking for any flight back to Australia,

Coming Home During COVID-19

however, major stopover destinations like Dubai, Thailand, Japan and almost every other Asian country you could think of were also not allowing foreigners to enter nor transit. In hindsight QANTAS should’ve been the first airline I went to, for obvious reasons, and they did happen to have two flights remaining with altered routes – both flying direct to Darwin (as opposed to Singapore), a quick refuel and on to Sydney. I managed to get a ticket for the Thursday flight. The feeling on the way to the airport on Thursday, in the airport and on the flight was a strange one. By the time I had to leave my flat, London was almost entirely in lockdown apart from ‘essential workers’ and ‘essential activities’. I found it quite eerie that most public transport was still running, and I recall on the way to the airport seeing all the big red buses, at least three to every street, all empty but still running nonetheless. Many of the famous tourist destinations were completely empty. I’d never seen London like this before and to give a comparison, it somewhat reminded me of an average Sunday in Canberra. The airport was quiet, all the shops and restaurants were closed. Some people were wearing no PPE while others were in full hazmat suits, masks, goggles, gloves … the whole shebang. Again, the way I would describe it would be surreal. The arrival in Sydney was a debacle. I thought there would have been greater measures in place and more attention to detail in dealing with passengers from Europe.

Josh Baker and his father David driving home from the airport.

As we disembarked we were met by the AFP and told to wait in the empty terminal corridors to queue to go through quarantine. However, as all 300 odd passengers disembarked, the corridors filled quite quickly and all of a sudden we were grouped together barely half a metre from each other, making it impossible for anyone to observe the social distancing rules. After about half an hour we were told to form a single file line. I waited two and a half hours in the queue until a lady took my temperature and I answered a series of questions regarding my plans for quarantine. By then I had missed my connecting flight to the Gold Coast and was rebooked on a later flight to Brisbane. When I arrived in Brisbane I had to fill out a set of forms pertaining to my mandatory 14 day quarantine period. Once these were signed and my obligations were read back to me by a Queensland Police Officer, I was able to leave.

My parents and I decided that it would be best if I quarantined away from them and the rest of the family, primarily due to my mum being immunocompromised and dad being over 55. Fortunately I was able to quarantine in complete isolation at my grandparents old property only a short drive from home. Quarantine as a whole wasn’t so bad, although I’d had enough after 10 days or so. My parents would stop by every two days with food for me, which they’d leave by the front steps. I spent the majority of my time there writing my essays for university, listening to music, staring at cows and eating. It was quite a simple existence. On my third to last day the police stopped by to ensure I was complying with the quarantine rules, which was probably the most exciting thing that happened over the course of the two weeks. It was a strange new experience that at times was completely surreal and at times incredibly frustrating. It’s devastating to see the toll it is taking on other nations across the world, however, it will be a huge learning curve, a painful one for many but a time that hopefully incites change in people and governments alike and reflection on what we take for granted and how it can all change very quickly. I can only hope Australia doesn’t see the worst of this virus and fortunately we are in a good position to learn from the mistakes of others to ensure that some form of normality soon returns.

School Happenings Easter Hat Parade

The Easter Hat Parade this year at Canungra State School was very different. This year for the first time we had a virtual Easter Hat parade. Children and their families made their hats at home then shared them with us via email or on our Facebook page. For the staff who are missing the students it made them smile to see their little charges safe and happy at home. Thank you to Foodworks and the P&C for supporting and continuing on with the Easter Raffle.

Learning

from

Home

Term 2 has brought new and very different learning for all students at Canungra State School. Staff were working hard during the end of Term 1 and over the holidays to prepare the material for students to stay safe and learn from home. The majority of families are leaning through the online platform of the Learning Place. It has been hard but teachers, students and parents have persevered and are having success. The strength of our community as we support each other to try and provide all our communities’ children with safe and continued learning is outstanding.

ANZAC Day

Sadly, due to the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent government restrictions, students were not able to take part in the traditional ANZAC Day march this year. Canungra State School Captains, Cooper Crook and Amy Consterdine (pictured left), laid a wreath on behalf of the School community at D J Smith Park on Thursday 23rd April and recited the poem ‘A Soldier Died Alone’ by Kathy J Parenteau. This is the poem they had rehearsed and would have recited on ANZAC Day.

An Obsession with Pretty Produce In October 2019, Dave and Simone Jelley moved into their new home at 704 Lamington National Park Road, Canungra and set about creating a new base for their farm business, ‘Pretty Produce’. Pretty Produce began in 2013 with Simone’s obsession for home gardening that simone says quickly got out of control. “I have been pioneering new edibles in the produce market scene since 2014,” said Simone, “Pretty Produce began supplying chefs and wholesale distributors at Brisbane Produce Markets. We won multiple national Delicious Produce Awards (Gold Medals 2016 and 2017, State Winner 2018) for edible flowers and leaf mixes. We then started up Australia wide with direct supply to the general public.” They had just put in farm infrastructure at the Canungra property when COVID-19 saw some quick changes come into play. “Our orders to restaurants/cafes/chefs ceased immediately,” said Simone. The family quickly set up direct supply of a range of produce to the local area. “Our farm gate sales (Monday - Friday 3-5pm) manned by my friendly son Thomas

Ask the Physio Plantar Fasciitis is one of the most common sources of heel and foot pain. Your plantar fascia is a thick fibrous band of tissue originating on the bottom surface of your heel bone and extends along the sole of your foot towards your toes. Your plantar fascia acts to prevent the over flattening of your arch. When your plantar fascia develops micro tears or becomes inflamed it is known as plantar fasciitis.

What Causes Plantar Fasciitis? Plantar fasciitis is one of those injuries, which seem to appear for no apparent reason. However, plantar fasciitis is caused in one of two ways. They are either traction (over stretching) or compression (standing on a stone) injuries.

What is Plantar Fascitis?

It is commonly diagnosed in individuals with poor foot biomechanics stressing the plantar fascia. Flat feet or weak foot arch control muscles are two common causes of plantar fasciitis. The presence of a heel spur can also be a contributing factor.

Characteristics • Heel pain when you put your foot on the floor first thing in the morning or after long periods of rest. • Tenderness to the front and inside of your heel. • Pain in your arch. • Limited ankle movement upwards and a tight calf. • A limp with a preference for toe walking. • Pain is usually worse when barefoot on hard surfaces and with stair climbing. • Many people may have had a sudden increase in their activity level prior to the onset of symptoms.

Physiotherapy Management Once your condition has been diagnosed by your Physiotherapist, your treatment will consist of: passive stretching of your calf

muscle; fitting with orthotics or heel spur cushions; ultrasound therapy; laser therapy; strapping and joint manipulation.

Self-Management Stretching (only if recommended). This consists of crossing your affected leg over the other leg and using your fingers across to the base of your toes to apply pressure as you stretch your toes back until a stretch can be felt along the arch. Calf stretching can be performed in a standing position with the affected leg placed behind the other leg with the toes pointed forward. Bend your front knee, keeping the back knee straight and your heel on the ground. You can then bend your back knee for more of a stretch.

Strength Training (for athletes) High-load strength training can be effective in the treatment of plantar fasciitis. High-load strength training may aid in a faster reduction in pain and improvements in function. This can be designed by your physio.

Hyundai Venue Elite Test & Review

Reviewed by Lee McKenzie-McKinnon, Editor, carandbikenews.com.au Hyundai have removed one vehicle in their line-up and brought in a completely different car to takes its place. However this little SUV is different. The Venue indirectly replaces the ageing Accent as Hyundai’s entry-level model. Starting at $22,490 driveaway for the Go while the other two variants, the Active at $24,490 and one tested the Elite is at $28,990. The engine is one fit for all - the 1.6-litre 4-cylinder with 90kW and 151Nm. The Go and Active have the option of manual or auto while the Elite only has a 6-speed auto. Hyundai have let us down a bit with this engine line-up as it is slow, sluggish and just an overall disappointment. Regardless of the engine and drivetrain issues, the Venue packs a lot of equipment in for a reasonable price. In the entry-level Go range, models feature camera-based autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane-keep assist, high-beam assist, driver attention monitoring, tyre pressure monitoring, an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, a rear-view camera with dynamic guidelines, a

3.5-inch TFT driver’s multifunction display, six airbags, and daytime-running lights. The mid-range Active has 15-inch alloy wheels, LED daytime-running lights (upgraded from halogen), LED indicators mounted in the side mirrors, a leatherappointed steering wheel and gearshift, rear parking sensors, six-speaker audio (up from four speakers) and static cornering lights. The top-shelf Elite gets 17-inch alloys, chrome front grille, LED tail-lights, twotone roof finish and contrasting side mirrors, rear privacy glass, leather-look seat bolster upholstery, in-built satellite navigation with SUNA live traffic updates, DAB+ digital radio, single-zone climate control, a USB

charge outlet, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. Inside there’s plenty of room for four adults, headroom for all and a decent amount of legroom in the second row. In front the design is clean and simplistic, with the dashboard dominated by the 8.0-inch touchscreen flanked by air vents, sitting above three circular manual air-conditioning controls on lower-spec models and climate controls on the Elite. While there may not be an inspiration when driving, the fuel saving will come in handy. The official figure is 7.2L/100km and we were able to get under that in the week of driving.

Canungra’s History The Spanish Flu 1918 - 1921 By Joyce Libke The Spanish Flu (pneumonic flu) and COVID-19 pandemics are similar but not the same! The soldiers returning by ship after the end of the WWI in Europe where the flu was running riot probably brought the Spanish flu back to Australia - just how many did not survive the long sea journey home does not seem to be recorded. Throughout the world it killed more people than were killed in WWI - between 40 and 50 million people died at a time when the population of the world was 1.8 billion. The medical profession had only just discovered viruses and it was 30 years prior to the development of antibiotics. Apparently that was the last time the border between Queensland and New South Wales was closed. The little we know of this period in the Canungra area is recorded in ‘Canungra Heritage 1879 - 1979’. Muriel Curtis wrote: “When the pneumonic flu epidemic struck Canungra in 1919 the (two roomed) school was taken over as a hospital. Sister Dennis from Beaudesert was in charge, and Dr Cook and Josephine and Sybil Delpratt nursed others in Leighton House with the assistance of Jack O’Brien and Fred Vowden. Two maternity cases died, Mrs Falkenhagen and Mrs Vin O’Brien, but one baby survived its mother. Matt Braiden (QATB officer) visited many on the outlying properties to give what aid he could.” Transport in the district would still have been mostly horse and carts - no phone, no power, no medicines, no medical equipment, no radio. Although Canungra did have a daily train or two to carry timber out and the mail and supplies in. Imagine the time it would have taken to send a letter and get a reply. Now in 2020, although we are in isolation, we have 24/7 access to the world wide news, to entertainment, and with the phones, emails and Facetime we can make contact with family, friends, work mates, and anyone we wish to speak to and see them at the same time. In the event of becoming ill we have a mighty army of medical personnel in hospitals with life saving equipment that was not even imagined in 1919 - while others are working on possible vaccines to protect us all. As our isolation goes on, think about using some of that time to write some letters and record some of the history/stories of your family.

We do more than you imagine:

Scenic Rim Regional Council - Comments Cr Jeff McConnell, Division 2 Councillor Well we have just completed our first week as a new Council and I would like to take this opportunity to thank the communities of Division 2 for placing their trust in

me to represent them. I definitely do not take this responsibility lightly and pledge that I will carry out my Councillor duties to the betterment of the Scenic Rim through open and transparent communication. At the Council Post Election meeting on 23rd April, Cr Duncan McInness (Div 6) was appointed as the Deputy Mayor and I was appointed as the Deputy Chair of the Local Disaster Management Group. We have many challenges ahead of us and after the past few years battling with flood, drought, fires and now the COVID-19 virus which have all severely impacted our Region both economically and environmentally. I believe that we will be able to face these challenges head on and come out stronger as a community. Now is the time for the Mayor and Councillors to work as a team to bring the Region together, forming a stronger and more resilient community through fair and equitable rates and services. You can contact Council on 5540 5111 (save it to your phone) or email mail@scenicrim.qld.gov.au.

I will always be available to talk with Division 2 residents on mobile 0436 327 434 or email jeff.m@scenicrim.qld.gov.au. Follow me on Facebook - Jeff McConnell Candidate for Division 2 Scenic Rim Regional Council (name change coming soon) where I will post a weekly update. Due to COVID 19, I will only be available for one on one meetings.

Cr Virginia West, Division 3 Councillor It is a great honour and a privilege to have been re elected to represent not only the residents of Division 3 but all residents in the Scenic Rim region. I look forward to working together for the next four years to build a vibrant and prosperous future for the Scenic Rim and as a community we will deal with this next challenge ahead of us. The new Council term is well underway and all Councillors have been sworn in by teleconference. For the next few months meetings and induction workshops will also be conducted by teleconference.

Christie St Safety Update

I have received a letter from DTMR giving an update on their plans to improve pedestrian safety along Christie St. I have included the letter for publication in its entirety in this issue. Stage 1 is expected to start very soon and will include: • Town entry treatments at both approaches to town- speed signs and red linemarking; • Upgrade of the pedestrian refuge outside Canungra State School to a raised zebra crossing and additional lighting; • Improved linemarking turning left into Canungra St; • New surface treatment on the descent to Canungra heading west (this section is very slippery when wet); • Tree clearing on specific road reserve to improve sign visibility. Following community feedback on the proposed zebra crossing on Christie St from D J Smith Park to the shops, DTMR officers have decided to look at alternative proposals. Thank you to the Canungra Chamber of Commerce and community members who provided submissions on this project and especially those residents who were able to document how dangerous a zebra crossing was at this location a number of years ago, hence it was removed. Thank you also to Jon Krause, State Member for Scenic Rim, and the DTMR officers for working together with our community on this issue of pedestrian safety. Stage two of this project will continue in forthcoming months and is focused on various sections of Beaudesert Nerang Rd and intersections heading towards Nerang. The entire project of safety improvements will be $4.9 million.

State Wide

Canungra RSL Sub-Branch News

By Jon Krause, State Member,Scenic Rim

By Col Lee, President, Canungra RSL Sub Branch

Thank You

With COVID-19 still amongst us and the average age of Canungra and surrounding area veterans 70+ years of age, it is reassuring that our doctors, medical and administration staff at Canungra Valley Medical are there to support us. This same magnificent sense of community duty is also shown by our wonderful dental doctors and their dedicated staff. The Canungra ambulance service is, thankfully, on-call 24/7 and their response time is second to none. Those who provide clean drinking water, sewage treatment and the collection and disposal of everyday waste, you are all affording Canungra to practise the highest levels of public health. Many veterans receive tremendous support from their various pets and congratulations must be shown towards the doctors and staff at Canungra Veterinary Clinic. I must also mention those other essential service providers ensuring that the Canungra community can carry on as best as possible throughout these trying times. To all of you, from us the veterans of Canungra and surrounding area, please accept our sincere appreciation for your kind deeds and devotion to duty.

Sub-Branch Building

The Sub-Branch building on Pine Street remains closed, the fire system has just been inspected and a new ‘Back to Base’ alarm system has been installed. Ground maintenance has been kindly carried out by several members of the local community and Sub-Branch members. The future of the building is still on the unknown side, although, offers have been made to lease. During these times of uncertainty, patience is the key to it all. In the meantime, take care, look after yourselves and support your neighbours. Remember, the best friend that COVID-19 has, COMPLACENCY.

Page 32

Bushfire Preparedness

Drier conditions are beginning to set in again, and I urge the Government to ensure that bushfire fuel loads on State-owned land (and as much as possible, private property too) are reduced before the dry bushfire conditions set in mid-year. You can assist too by ensuring vegetation on your property is properly managed and kept to a safe load. Keeping yards / paddocks clear of obstructions that might hinder fire crews from accessing property is also important to saving homes and other assets in the event of fire. We were all devastated by last year’s bushfires, and I know many locals are still reeling from those events – not to mention COVID-19 now and the water supply issues that came about due to drought before that. The inquiry set up by the Government into 2019’s Sarabah / Canungra bushfire – which only received five submissions – failed dismally to listen to the concerns of local firies and others who were affected by the fires. Its submission period closed while many rural firefighters in our district were still out fighting fires. It was padded out by information gathered from telephone interviews with residents about matters not directly related to the bushfire events. It was, to put it mildly, a crock. Listening to local knowledge and on-the-ground experience is vital to keeping people and communities safe, and the LNP team and myself continue to support an open, transparent inquiry into 2019’s events – so we know what went well, what didn’t and where gaps need to be addressed.

COVID-19 What Lies Ahead

We will emerge from this difficult time, and I know there are many ideas about how Australia needs to adapt to continue our prosperity into the future. A key issue that I have argued consistently for over my time as your MP is the need for affordable, reliable energy – above all else. Energy makes our crops grow, through irrigation. Energy makes our building materials and our medical supplies, and it powers our hospitals. Higher energy costs drive up the costs of everything, meaning less can be achieved. While Australia’s wages remain among the highest in the world, it is vital that we ensure other costs of making things are as efficient as possible. Affordable, reliable energy underpins a great deal of that. Apart from that, especially at a Queensland level, the massive amount of red tape in our planning/development approval system is a significant barrier to people starting out in business – those wanting to “have a go.” The Institute of Public Affairs estimates that red tape costs Australia $176 billion per year – about 10% of Australia’s economic output – making red tape Australia’s largest industry. The consultants’ reports required (all at significant cost), fees charged, and convoluted conditions imposed by government make it almost impossible for people who don’t already have a fair chunk of financial reserves to go into, or expand, their business. We need to unlock the potential of very hard-working sole trader and family businesses out there, especially in our region. To realise their potential the system must change to make it easier for these businesses to grow and employ more. Quickly, efficiently, and without overwhelming costs. If there is anything I can do to assist you, please call, email or send me an SMS 0401 634 488.

Eat Local With Scenic Rim Farm Box A group of local producers, supported by Scenic Rim Regional Council, have launched Scenic Rim Farm Box, a new ‘farm to you’ delivery business which will deliver the region’s best produce to customers in Brisbane and beyond – making it easy to eat local every week. Scenic Rim Farm Box is designed to fill the gap caused by the cancellation of 2020 Eat Local Week. Mayor Christensen said the initiative would help keep jobs in the Scenic Rim and strengthen the region’s connection with consumers. “Scenic Rim Farm Box will connect consumers and visitors with the people and produce of the Scenic Rim from the safety and comfort of their own homes. “While sadly we cannot have Scenic Rim Eat Local Week in its usual format this year, we can have a virtual Eat Local Week instead, via Scenic Rim Farm Box. Long-term Eat Local Week sponsors and supporters, Kalfresh Vegetables, have collaborated with Scenic Rim Regional Council to establish the Farm Box concept.

Mayor Greg Christensen with Scenic Rim Food Ambassador Kate Raymont. Photo: Luke Marsden for Scenic Rim Food Box.

“When we heard that Eat Local Week could not proceed in 2020, we started thinking about the ways we could still connect city-based consumers with the Scenic Rim’s seasonal produce,” said Kalfresh CEO Richard Gorman. “The concept was ‘If the city can’t come to the Scenic Rim, let’s take the Scenic Rim to them’.

Suppliers to Scenic Rim Farm Box must meet food safety, capability and quality requirements as assessed by Scenic Rim Farm Box. To submit an expression of interest to be a supplier, email info@scenicrimfarmbox. com.au.

Many people go to the beach to swim and sunbathe in South-east Queensland. I have to say that if I am heading out to a marine environment it is because I am on the hunt for shorebirds. For several years now, I have been involved in shorebird surveys to count different species. One of the more common shorebird species that I encounter is the Bar-tailed Godwit. This predominately ‘brown’ bird is seen in areas such as Moreton Bay and is in ‘non-breeding’ plumage. Around about March, these usually drab birds have an incredible transformation into their ‘breeding’ plumage, which is a deep-chestnut brown in the head/breast areas with upper wings sections, a dark brown. The subspecies Limosa lapponica baueri is predominately seen along the east coast of Australia. Bar-tailed Godwits can be seen in a variety of habitats including artificial roosts, estuaries, tidal inlets and inland lakes. These birds may be seen singly, in pairs or in their thousands at suitable high tide roosts. The Bar-tailed Godwit is a common summer migrant in Australia from September to April. By the end of April, most Bar-tailed Godwit have left on their migration north to Alaska and Siberia to breed for the brief summer in these locations. The longest known non-stop flight of any bird is held by the Bar-tailed Godwit travelling from Alaska to New Zealand. When these birds do stop to feed that are voracious feeders moving across mudflats plunging their bills right into the hilt. As mentioned, Moreton Bay is a hotspot for this species. Unfortunately, some people are not aware of the needs of these birds and will disturb them while they are feeding or roosting by walking amongst them or allowing their dog to chase them. Education is a vital key to making people aware of the birds’ presence. The Queensland Wader Study Group invests much time and energy in interacting with the public to promote shorebird conservation. So, the next time you are out on the water or at the beach, keep an eye out for the Bar-tailed Godwit. People and Bar-tailed Godwits can certainly share these environments together!

“Have you ever wondered how to grow your own rainforest trees? Is there a beautiful tree that you have always wanted to collect and propagate the seed from? Are you in the business of ecological restoration, rainforest propagation or environmental education? Following recent fires in Northern New South Wales, a group of knowledgeable nursery people have recorded their knowledge and produced a beautiful book. It serves not only to tell you how to prepare and grow the fruit you have collected, but also serves as a rainforest tree identification resource. This long-awaited guide to rainforest seed propagation unlocks the secrets to growing 300 rainforest species. Providing specific information on how to sustainably collect, process and germinate seeds, this book aims to support a growing movement of rain- ‘Australian Rainforest Seeds’ aims to support a growing movement of rainforest restoration. forest restoration.” This book is beautifully presented with the stunning photography of Hugh Nicholson, well known for more than 40 years of dedication to preserving and establishing rainforest. Nan Nicholson, equally renowned for the Terania Rainforest Publishing and for the preservation of the Nightcap Range rainforests, writes in the introduction what so many believe: growing plants from seeds works magic and that reforestation is an antidote to despair. Thinking Outside the Pound From AWL QLD web site www.awlqld.com.au COVID-19 provides opportunities to increase care and support for our own animals and to keep animals out of pounds and shelters. AWLQ is encouraging the community to use the current restrictions to think “outside of the pound”, to prevent animals getting lost or homeless and being impounded, and to help animals already in pounds and shelters.

Prevent Lost And Homeless Animals

• Use extra time you have at home to build effective low-cost fencing or enclosures for your cat, to prevent him/her from wandering and potentially getting injured or being impounded. This will also assist to reduce workloads within vet clinics and animal management services. You may also have more time to get your cat used to not wandering, by providing more cuddles, play or just company – whatever your cat enjoys. • Check that your animals have ID tags with current contact information and that their microchip registry contact details are up-to-date. This will help your neighbours get your pets back to you if they go missing, and prevent them from being impounded. Cats are more likely to go wandering over the fence than dogs. Don’t just assume they’re OK and will come back. Cats can get stuck somewhere or hide if scared and may be injured or impounded. • Offer support to people in your street with pets. They may be struggling to provide for their pets. Phone them to find out what food their animals eat and provide some food, or offer to get it for them when you go out to get your essentials from the supermarket or order on-line. Offer to take animals for a walk or care for them for a couple of weeks if their owner is unwell, or has to go to hospital. Please ensure you are following the latest directives from public health officials. Seek assistance if you are struggling to care for your own animals. It is better that your animals stay with you at this time, with pounds and shelters under extra pressure. Contact AWLQ on 07 5509 9000 if you need advice or assistance. Page 35

News from St Luke’s By Di Ayscough It is amazing how much our lives have changed in the past month. My article last month stated, St Luke’s would be open on Saturday and Sunday mornings for anyone to come and take solace for a quiet time. This has not happened, due to Government orders requiring all churches be closed as part of the COVID-19 shut down. Does this mean St Luke’s is going to be an empty building with the doors locked and no-one present until we return to some sort of normality? Definitely not! The people who attend St Luke’s see the church as part of their lives. We want you to know God is with us, regardless of whether the doors are open or shut. Each week someone waters the flowers, ensures the interior is in order and maintain the grounds. St Luke’s is definitely alive. Anyone who wants a prayer for themselves, their family or the world can drop a list of prayer needs through the newly installed letterbox in the vestry door (this is the door that can be seen from the street). Please feel free to use this facility and your requests will be passed on to Fr Ken. Have you noticed the bell is not being rung on Sunday mornings? Do you miss the ringing? Maybe it woke you up too early, or maybe you miss the lovely sounds of our historic bell. What does the bell ringing mean to you? The bell rings 12 times to represent the 12 apostles. The bell is normally rung at 7.30am and again at 7.45am as the Sunday service is about to commence. So, the next time you hear the bell ring it will signal the beginning of our new life. Life after COVID-19, life with new hope, life with new purpose and a better understanding of how and why we must learn to live better with one another.

Canungra Owls and Moriarty Park News By Bren Dalby Not a lot to report in naturally … and know full well things still have the potential to change on a daily basis … especially I suspect as the temperatures drop, so lets all keep following the advice I reckon until we get the all clear. I am saddened by the complacency of some in this regard and urge everyone to please stay safe and more importantly keep our more vulnerable safe by not passing it to them. I was told by someone in an official capacity recently as they breached my ‘safe distance’ space that: “haha, I am the last person you need to be afraid of”. My response was that they indeed may know they were ‘safe’ but had absolutely NO IDEA where I had been or whom I had been in contact with and therefore damn dangerous if they are thinking this way. Whilst I am having a wee rant, would those residents who are getting out and exercising their dogs at Moriarty Park please pick up their dog’s poo; most do, and thank you … but some don’t and I think it is downright ignorance and disrespectful of others.

No decision has been made regarding the start time for soccer

We are happy to allow safe off leash against our normal (and often ignored anyway even though there is a dog park adjacent) for the time being as long as no dramas occur. Great to see the park used safely for limited exercise but most unpleasant to fall in dog crap in the process so just please do the right thing guys. Lots of chat, speculation and confusion regarding the start time for soccer and indeed all sports. As this is new territory at

all levels we don’t have much to offer other than that it would seem no refunds will be available until a decision is finally made and maybe a carry on to next year? A Club Zoom meeting with all other clubs and the higher bodies (not THAT high; we haven’t sought HIS advice yet, he’s been busy) will have happened by the time we receive this month’s Canungra Times and we will keep you posted on the Facebook page regarding any happenings. Everyone is sadly in the same boat. The canteen, however is coming along at a rate of knots so well done team! Always try to find the positive! No trivia or bingo nights planned of course so watch this space and the FoodWorks notice board down the track for those. Unsure also what will happen regarding the Sportsperson of the Year for 2020 and a decision will be made later in the year. The two monthly nominations already in and accepted will be carried over to 2021 in a worst case scenario. Keep safe guys and keep smiling. We will get through it, ready for a heckuva party sometime! Cheers!!

SOME THINGS YOU MAY NOT KNOW ABOUT THE CANUNGRA TIMES

50% OFF! Any ads for Community Groups and Job Ads

We want to reward community groups that work hard to promote themselves, their events and their programs. It also applies to job ads, because we know how important jobs are in this region.

Ads from just $22

We know small business is tough, and advertising can sometimes be expensive. We keep our prices affordable because we would rather see you get a return on your investment over the long term than sell you an ad one time.

Local Biz Priority We do our best not to promote out of town businesses that are competing with local businesses.

We would rather advertise a local business wherever possible to ensure we deliver on our promise of helping the local economy.

We’re just like you! We are a local small business just like you.

We live here, we are raising a family and we are committed to the region. Our advertisers are our friends and neighbours and we have a vested interest in helping you succeed.

That’s how we support you. You can support us by taking an ad in our paper so we can continue to do what we have been doing - building a community focussed paper.

CANUNGRA BOWLS CLUB By Ray Hickson Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Canungra Bowls Club is closed until further notice. Any enquiries can be emailed to canungrabowlsclub@gmail.com or keep an eye on the noticeboard outside the Club.

A spokesperson for the Canungra Bowls Club said she hopes every one keeps well at this time and she looks forward to members and guests returning to the Bowls Club in the near future. Many thanks go to Shane Stevenson, Brian Laurence and other members who have offered help with shopping to those

members that are in self isolation due to the coronavirus, it has been greatly appreciated. Brian, Shane and other Bowls Club members are always amongst the first to offer assistance to the community in difficult times. Their assistance during the September 2019 bushfires was invaluable and they have once again stepped up to help out.
