Dawn Service in Canungra. Photo by Yvonne Selleck.

Canungra Turns Out for Fallen Soldiers

It was a moving Dawn Service at Canungra’s D J Smith Park on Anzac morning. A large crowd gathered to remember those who have lost their lives and those who are still serving in conflicts across the globe today. Many people attended both the Dawn Service and the parade and morning service. The parade began at Canungra State School and included serving members of the Defence forces; veterans from several conflicts, including Vietnam, Afghanistan, Iraq and Korea; Canungra State School students; Canungra Scouts; Scenic Rim SES volunteers and

In his keynote address, Lieutenant Colonel Dennis Robins CSC, said Anzac Day commemorations over the past few years had rightly concentrated on the centenary of battles fought in World War One, at the time known as ‘the war to end all wars’. Sadly, this was not the case and 2019 marks 80 years since the start of World War Two, a war which continued for six years and took over 50 million lives worldwide. Canungra RSL Sub Branch President, Col Lee, addressed the school children in the crowd, giving his appreciation of the respect shown by those who attended and marched.

Following the service, wreaths were laid by the Canungra RSL Sub Branch and a number of organisations from Canungra and the surrounding districts, including Jon Krause MP and Scenic Rim Regional Councillors Virginia West and Nadia O’Carroll. In a moving tribute, the Eldridge family, laid wreaths for Stephen Eldridge, a veteran who served in the Australian Army and lived in Canungra until he passed away early this year. Stephen’s wife Vicki laid the first wreath, followed by their children, Kyle, Taylor, Pearce and Molly. Lest we forget.

Candidates

Eight candidates will contest the seat of Wright on 18th May 2019. The Australian Electoral Commission said with a record enrolment rate of 96.8% it is important that all Australians enrolled now think about how and when they will cast their vote. “We have the most complete electoral roll since federation and we’re providing a broad range of voting services but it is up to enrolled Australians to turnout to make sure they have their say,” Mr Rogers said. Go to www.aec.gov.au to find the location and opening times for early voting centres or call the AEC on 13 23 26. Candidates for Wright were invited to provide information about themselves and their policies to The Canungra Times.

LNP - Scott Buchholz

As someone who has always lived in regional towns, run my own small business and raised a family, I know that a strong economy is central to everything. It’s not just about jobs, taxes and the bottom line – it’s about people. A strong

for

Wright

economy means guaranteeing funding for schools and hospitals, providing a strong Medicare system and a social safety net for those in need. A strong economy means we can keep Australians safe and secure with a strong border protection program. It means we can invest in better roads and transport systems in the regions. A strong economy creates the opportunity for everyone to get ahead. Because we all know from personal experience that you can’t just keep on racking up debt. And we all understand that you can’t pay for the essentials if you can’t manage money. That’s why a strong economy is so important for the future, especially for our young people. I’m proud to be part of a team that has the runs on the board when it comes to economic management – delivering the first surplus in 12 years. But I’m also passionate about fighting for the things we need locally and making sure our local communities share in the benefits. I’ve help secure extra funding to fix roads, repair bridges, support local community and sporting groups, and invest in our local

Electorate

schools, hospitals and defence force. But there’s more to be done. That’s why the choice at this election is crucial. It’s a choice between Scott Morrison and a strong economy where people can get ahead or the risky tax and spend policies of Bill Shorten. I will stand against the $387 billion in new taxes that Bill Shorten and Labor are planning which will hit local households and small businesses hard.

United Australia Party - David Wright

David sees a great opportunity to breathe fresh air into politics. He thinks that with United Australia Party now standing in all 151 seats across the country, it has the numbers to make substantial improvement for the first, and possibly only time in Australia’s political history. He sees the key features of the campaign: • Stop the sell-off of our land and key infrastructure/assets to foreign powers and interests. • Change how provisional tax is paid to free up substantial cash flow for businesses.

• Significantly Increase the Pension for Australians who have done their bit. • Make electricity prices considerably cheaper, for all. • Make home loans tax deductible. • What Australia grows, grows Australia – support local farmers always, not just in times of hardship. David is a well-entrenched local, for 17 years enjoying the unique advantages of a semi-rural lifestyle with his wife and teenage son on a small alpaca farm. David is a local south east Queensland business man with a background in the Film and Television industry. Extensive management of marketing and advertising content for several state and federal political campaigns made him realise that they really need some fresh solutions at the top end of politics. Having employed up to 25 staff at a time, he understands the stress of small and medium business and the constant challenges it presents. He feels the current system is a significant imposition on businesses and families, and needs an overhaul. We need to protect Australia from within and from without. Stop the great Australian selloff.

for

Wright

“We want an Australia for our kids and grandkids, and we will work with determination to protect it. We will protect and defend Australia, for all Australians,’’ he said.

Queensland Greens Shannon Girard

Shannon Girard was raised in Goondiwindi and moved to Brisbane fifteen years ago to pursue a marketing career for a large agricultural corporation. He holds a masters degree in marketing and works as marketing manager in the transportation industry. He and his partner live in Tamborine Mountain. “We love the sense of community, and the passion people have for our beautiful landscapes,” Shannon said. “From Logan to the Gold Coast, from the Scenic Rim to the Lockyer Valley, our green spaces are our joint asset and our responsibility – let’s protect them for the generations that come after us by tackling climate change and putting in place laws that hinder the destructive activities of big developers.” Shannon said that he decided to run for Wright because he feels the major parties

Electorate

have failed to tackle the community’s rising cost of living concerns such as health and education, housing, electricity, childcare and the lack of local job opportunities. “The people of Wright have been taken for granted for far too long. We need universal health care that includes dental and mental health, fair funding for schools, affordable housing and childcare, and a renewable revolution that will reduce our energy bills and create the jobs of the future. It’s time that politicians put people and our natural environment before profits and short-term political gain.”

Australian Labor Party Pam McCreadie*

Pam McCreadie, Labor’s candidate for Wright, has lived locally for over 14 years and knows there is no better place to have raised her two kids. Pam’s commitment to her local community is well known. She is highly active in many community groups including as an Assistant Instructor and Treasurer of the Jimboomba & Districts Cadets, and a former President of the Jimboomba State School P&C.

Pam is passionate about restoring the funding to our local education and health services, cut by the LNP Government. Pam and the united Labor team are focused on securing the best possible future for the hard-working people of Wright. Pam McCreadie has the experience and local understanding to get that job done for Wright. *This information was taken from the Labor party web site as requests for information were unanswered.

Fraser Anning’s Conservative National Party - Rod Smith

Long time One Nation member Rod Smith is now running for Fraser Anning’s Conservative National Party in Wright. Married for 35 years with four adult children and self-employed tradie for 30 years, Rod was the One Nation candidate and representative in the area from 2015 until this year. Rod is aiming for the injection of funding into local infrastructure such as the overloaded Mt Lindesay Hwy and for a passenger rail, stronger border protection, nurturing

for

of local businesses and industries such as farming including dairy and a vegetable canning facility, tourism and giving locals hope for a better future after years of major party neglect. After campaigning and holding regular supporter’s meetings throughout the large electorate over recent years, Rod identified despair and depression as major issues. Lack of secure employment, lack of essential services such as transport, education, entertainment/recreation, no Centrelink and a growing sense of people being alienated from the decision-making process leave people powerless and angry. Examples of this include the marketing of the Inland Rail project to skeptical locals, vegetation laws that make private property into private national parks, the rank growth of red tape and regulation, the crushing tax/rate burden and inappropriate residential development.

Independent - Innes Larkin

Innes Larkin says as a professional mountain guide he spends his days encouraging people in one of the toughest physical challenges of their lifetime.

There are some kinds of rain we can always count on. What we can’t count on is rain when we need it, where we need it. That’s why we’re asking you to use water wisely. To find out more visit

“Standing as an independent will be one of the biggest mountains I have ever climbed, but it is one step at a time, and a million steps to go.” Innes has a reputation for being a leader in difficult situations that make the average person shy away. His business acumen comes from running an Ecotourism Business, Mt Barney Lodge, for the last 18 years, and this business recently won the Scenic Rim Business Awards in Tourism, Accommodation and Hospitality. Innes has made representations to parliament many times, including a parliamentary enquiry. He is experienced and comfortable with media having gained these skills in the course of being in the tourism industry for 18 years. Public speaking is one of his strengths. He has a reputation of speaking out and speaking up on community issues when it is needed. Innes is comfortable in the political landscape, he has formulated guiding principles to navigate his way through issues, will not shy away from what needs to be done, and is here to help.

Candidates for Wright Katter’s Australian Party (KAP) - Matthew Tomlinson

Katter’s Australian Party candidate Matthew Tomlinson has juggled working as a stockman and campaigning in, what he says, is the most important election in two decades to decide Australia’s future. A born and bred Beaudesert local, Matt believes he has the knowledge to represent the electorate of Wright in the ways the residents deserve, and promises to deliver on agricultural, industrial and environmental issues facing the region. With a background heavily influenced by farming, Matthew wants a fairer system for primary producers to continue to deliver their products while profiting from their hard work and innovation. With the urban sprawl encroaching on Wright’s scenic doorstep, Matthew wants to ensure that spread doesn’t encroach on prime agricultural land, or on the heavily biodiverse environment the region offers. He says “the ‘Green-tape’ approach that is currently in place to protect the natural wonders of the region by locking up the National Parks has developed a cesspool of weeds, feral pests, and under-utilised tourism dollars, while being a death trap in the risk of bushfires to anyone living alongside the wilderness. He envisions the creation a public land management system that will protect the most endangered areas while creating jobs, tourism, a safe environment for families, tied in with our rich indigenous heritage. Matthew believes the future of industry in the region should be one that is conscious of the impacts on residents, infrastructure and the environment. Job creation and infrastructure should be paramount to any further developments applications, to avoid socio-economic dead zones, as residents around the electorate of Wright are accustomed to the rewarding lifestyle this unique region offers.

Farewell

From My Window

with Keer Moriarty, Editor

When Social Media is not very social I am as guilty of the next person of using social media as an escape. I’ll often waste an hour scrolling through Facebook, not realising how much time has passed. Occasionally I’m reminded of the damage that social media can do. What is it about being behind a keyboard that makes people so rude (says me, sitting behind my keyboard typing this)? There appears to be a loosening of language, of moral ethics and generally of manners on any type of social media. I experienced it when the 2017 Canungra Rodeo was postponed and all kinds of abuse was posted to the page - despite the decision being made for the safety of competitors and the animals. Recently, I have removed myself from some community pages because I can’t handle the language and threats made on these pages - I pity the admin people on those pages when people are openly threatening to kill animals or punch someone. I fail to understand how or why people think it is acceptable to be so rude to people they don’t even know and it makes me wonder - would they do that face to face? Do they realise the damage they do? I think most of us when communicating in person would err on the side of politeness. Maybe in a situation where we are anonymous, sitting behind a keyboard, maybe behind a false persona, we think it is OK to frighten or belittle other people. It takes as much effort to be kind to someone as it does to be rude, maybe less. I just don’t get it.

Thank you for welcoming Mal and I into this beautiful township but we now have to move on for health reasons to Toowoomba. We want to thank Ann and Tony and all the wonderful team at FoodWorks for their patience with me and getting stuff off the high shelves. To our wonderful girls, our postie and gracious Cheryl at the Post Office; to John Wilson and all at the pharmacy (no more fiddly pills, Rachel); to our ambulance personnel (how amazing are you); to our police who fortunately we haven’t had much to do with; and to the most wonderful girls in the best library - my special book orders were always filled. To Shona and Paul, an example to all and the coffee isn’t bad either! To Marj and Clarry, and of course the wonderfully warm and welcoming people with Dave and Sue Hawke of the Uniting Church. To Linda and Dale the best landlords; to Robyn and John, the best neighbours. Our thanks to you all for 22 years of friendship. Mal and Yvonne Staples

Thank You!!

We’d like to express our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who supported The Smiley Reilly Project in our March fundraising events! We had many amazing members of our community take part by joining our ‘Round the World for Reilly day of awareness on 17th March, sweating it out at our 80’s Aerobics night at Live Fit Gym, and attending the Quiz Night held at Moriarty Park. Thank you so much to everyone who took part and donated - we are truly grateful! And as always we are grateful to be a part of such a caring and generous community. All monies raised in March will be used throughout the coming year to provide support to bereaved families who have lost a child. The support we provide is an opportunity to connect with other bereaved families, and a chance to see a little good in the world, have some fun and courageously smile whilst navigating a new life as a bereaved parent or sibling. We have four fun-filled group events scheduled for 2019 and will continue to work with individual families to bring a little sunshine into their lives. If you know anyone who could use a little Smiley Reilly Sunshine, feel free to get in touch with either of us, or at info@thesmileyreillyproject.org. And thank you again for your support - what a wonderful community we live in! Raquel and Jonathon Hall The Smiley Riley Project

SAVVY SENIORS TO GET TECHY

Thompsons Caring

Becoming tech-savvy will be a cinch for all when Council’s Age-Friendly Savvy Kiosks pop up throughout the Scenic Rim. Learn how to use a mobile device, download reading material or navigate websites with the help of staff who will explain in easy to understand terms. Mayor Greg Christensen said this was an excellent opportunity for seniors to enhance their digital literacy. “These Savvy Kiosks enable a supportive environment to teach our older community members more about their electronic devices, the internet and the numerous resources available to them,” he said. “It is important that Scenic Rim seniors are able to conduct more personal business online due to the ever-changing digital landscape of today’s society.” The Age-Friendly Savvy Kiosks will pop up from 9am to 1pm on the following days at these locations: • Harrisville School of Arts: Tuesday 7th May and 16th July; • Kalbar School of Arts: Wednesday 15th May and 24th July; • Kooralbyn Hall: Monday 27th May and 29th July; • Rathdowney Hall: Tuesday 4th June and 6th August; • Tamborine Village Hall: Thursday 20th June and 22nd August; • Beechmont Community Centre: Tuesday 25th June and 27th August. Each kiosk will also have information available from service organisations, health professionals and assistance programs. This Age-Friendly Scenic Rim project is funded by the Queensland Government. For more information contact Scenic Rim Regional Council’s Community Development Officer on 5540 5111.

Margo’s Art for Farmers

Local artist, Margo Wood has donated a number of original paintings to the Canungra Information Centre. The paintings are for sale to raise funds for farmers struggling with drought and other weather events which have occurred in the past few years. Gina Firth of the Canungra Information Centre said the money will be donated via the Wonglepong CWA. “The CWA does a lot of work in drought affected country areas and we thought that was the best way to get the money to those who need it,” said Gina.

“We have raised over $500 already and we still have a lot of paintings on display,” she said. During May, Margot’s paintings are for sale at a 30% discount. There are a number of different themes and styles. To view or purchase the paintings, visit Canungra Information Centre at 12 - 14 Kidston Street, Canungra between 9.30am and 3.30pm any day or phone 5543 5156 for enquiries. Wedding Bells at the Blue House

On Saturday 13th April, Justine and Mike Luke’s daughter Ally married her soulmate, Jack, at The Blue House in Appel Street, Canungra. The eclectic, rustic, bespoke and laid back backyard of the venue complemented the beautiful bride and gallant groom perfectly. Shona from The Hub, and her smiling offsider, hand delivered scrumptious finger

foods to all between speeches, catering for many tastes, from vegans to carnivores. Justine and Mike said the hard work, creative input and willingness to listen displayed by Angela and Shona, combined with the charming yard of the Blue House, certainly contributed to the love and joy of Jack’s and Ally’s wedding, and was appreciated by all present.

“To Angela, Shona, civil celebrant Pamela, Sam from Lydia’s Garden who supplied the bouquet and arbor, Jen who helped decorate the arbor, and Canungra Bowls Club who supplied the sound system, we, Ally’s proud parents, thank you all wholeheartedly for assisting with the wedding of our darling daughter and special son-in-law. What a great function venue and terrific local caterers!” They said.

Locals Should Buy Online and Save

Canungra locals are encouraged to purchase tickets to the 2019 Canungra rodeo online to take advantage of discounted pricing. While the 2019 prices have increased slightly on last year, by putting in a discount code ‘LOCALS’ can save approximately $5 on adult tickets and $10 on family tickets. Canungra AH&I Society Marketing Officer, Lee McKenzie-McKinnon said the Society after the success of the 2018 rodeo the Society decided to sell all tickets online for this year’s rodeo. “We haven’t had a price increase for many years and decided it was time, however we want the event to remain affordable for our community, so we are offering a limited number of discounted tickets,” said Lee. “The 2018 rodeo sold out so we are advising people to buy their tickets early - not only are the discounted tickets limited but we will also be limiting the overall numbers at the event this year to make it more comfortable and enjoyable for everyone,” he said. Tickets can be purchased through the rodeo web site canungrarodeo.org. To receive the discount, enter the coupon code ‘LOCALS’. Anyone who is unable to purchase tickets online is advised to contact Sharon Rafferty, Secretary, Canungra AH&I Society on 0403 278 556.

Hop To It For Free Movies

Hop to it and enjoy a night under the stars at Scenic Rim Regional Council’s Saturday night Movies in the Park this month. The Free Movies in the Park program will feature the family-friendly tale of Peter Rabbit on the big screen at Beaudesert, Tamborine Mountain and Boonah to celebrate National Families Week in May. Mayor Greg Christensen said the early evening events were not only for families but also aimed to bring the community together in a relaxed setting. “Whether you’re young or just young-at-heart, these free events are a great way to connect with others in your community,” he said. The Free Movies in the Park sessions will kick off at 5.30pm for a 6pm start on the following dates at these locations: • Saturday 4 May: Jubilee Park, Beaudesert, • Saturday 11 May: Tamborine Mountain Sports Complex, and • Saturday 18 May: Coronation Park, Boonah. With a free movie, popcorn and giveaways, movie-goers need only bring their own chairs and blankets. Local clubs will be selling food and drinks and there will be gas heaters to ward off the chill. Peter Rabbit is a new take on Beatrix Potter’s classic tale of a rebellious rabbit trying to sneak into Mr McGregor’s vegetable garden. Peter will stop at nothing to drive Mr McGregor away as the two wage war over the garden and Bea’s affection.

Ask the Physio - Acute Wry Neck Acute Wry Nick

Has your child ever woken up with a stiff and painful neck? The culprit is poor posture! Acute Wry Neck is classified as one of three different types: Facet Joint Wry Neck, Discogenic Wry Neck and Text Neck.

Facet Joint Wry Neck

Facet joints are found on either side of each vertebrae of the spine and allow for controlled rotation and side bending. An awkward movement or sustained posture of the neck (sleeping with the wrong pillow; holding the head awkwardly while on the phone or playing with the iPad or video games) can cause a part of the joint capsule to tear or get caught in the joint, making it feel locked. The muscles around the area become tight as they protect the injured joint and the pain is usually sharp. The good news about Facet Wry Neck is that your physiotherapist is usually able to help to ‘unlock’ the neck quite quickly with laser therapy, ultrasound therapy, gentle mobilisations and possibly a manipulation. Most of the time a full recovery can be expected within a week. Your

physiotherapist will help your child / teenager to adopt better postures so he/she can continue to use devices but avoid further damage.

Discogenic Wry Neck

Each of the vertebrae of the neck are separated by fibrous discs which are filled with a gelatinous centre. Under pressure, these discs may become irritated and the resulting swelling can cause pain and muscle spasm in the surrounding area. In the neck, a small amount of damage can result in a large amount of pain. The development of Discogenic Wry Neck is usually due to a combination of factors, including prolonged poor posture, poor nutrition and weakness of the neck muscles. It can be difficult to find a comfortable position and it is likely that pain and other symptoms will travel into the arm. Initial treatment of Discogenic Wry Neck focuses on reducing pain and muscle spasm with laser therapy, ultrasound therapy, massage, taping, mobilisations, heat and postural education. Discogenic Wry Neck is more serious than Facet Joint Wry neck and it is imperative that safer postures are adopted as damage has already occurred.

While the initial symptoms may settle down quite quickly, it can take up to six weeks to fully recover from this.

Text Neck

This is a repetitive stress injury to the neck caused by holding the head in a forward and downward position for extended periods of time causing excessive amounts of tension to be created in the deep muscles of the neck and across the shoulders. Chronic headaches have also been linked to this condition. When your child’s or teenager’s head is tilted forwards by just 2cm, the weight of the head increases dramatically, putting huge forces through the particular joint supporting the weight. This can be the equivalent of six Ten-pin bowling balls! The treatment for this is similar to the treatment for the Discogenic Wry Neck where the emphasis will be on postural education. If your child or teenager experiences an Acute Wry Neck, call Alison on 0409 345 047 at Optimal Health Physiotherapy, Canungra for appropriate management advice.

MOTORING -

Toyota HiLux Rugged X Review

Aimed at off-road enthusiasts, Toyota launched three “halo” variants of the HiLux with the top of the line being the Rugged X. Developed locally through a painstaking test program, the Toyota HiLux Rugged X stands as the toughest, most expensive ute you can buy from the biggest-selling marque on the road. The HiLux Rugged X lives up to its name by incorporating a high-tensile alloy bash plate, winch-compatible steel front bar, LED driving lights, recovery points, rock rails, load-carrying sports bar and other heavyduty components. Based on the HiLux SR5, the Rugged X has smaller 17-inch alloys with tyres that are more ready to handle off-road duties; heavyduty steel front and rear bumpers, exceptional front lighting including an LED light bar, a protective front bash plate and side rock rails, air snorkel, towing kit and functional sports bar. Cosmetic touches include black wheel arch and side mouldings, black mirror caps, tail lamp surrounds, HiLux badges and decorative decals. The exterior has a really tough look and the approach to fitting the accessories as part

of the model really makes this HiLux stand out from the others. There are more differences on the inside as the Rugged X gets black perforated leather seats, metallic black cabin trim, a black roofliner and subtly revised instruments. Other items such as sat nav, a reversing camera and smart keys come straight from the SR5. There is a not a great deal to say about the engine as it is the same across the range. A 2.8-litre four-cylinder turbo diesel matched with a six-speed automatic transmission.

Review by Lee McKenzie-McKinnon, Editor, carandbikenews.com.au

The Canungra Times - May 2019

There is 450Nm of torque and 130kW of power which isn’t a big number. The HiLux has always had good suspension, best-in-class off-road traction control and a decent under body design and this is improved with the Rugged X additions. The clearance is better, and you can drive more confidently with steel in the right places. While it is not exactly cheap, you get a reasonable amount of extras, and it’s important to remember that the gear meets ADR and is covered by Toyota’s warranty.

Canungra State School 1956

Canungra Sate School - 1956 ‘little room children

By Joyce Libke When the school photographer came around in 1956, he took each child’s photo for the parents to buy. As the Assistant Teacher, I insisted that he take a group photo of my “little” room children. I held the only copy until a few years ago when one of the army girls retired to the Canungra area and I gave her a copy with names attached. How many names do you remember? How much have you changed? At least ten of the people in this photograph reside in the Canungra area today and several others have close family here but no longer live here themselves. At least 10 were children who lived in the newly built Officers’ quarters at the Jungle Training Centre (now Kokoda Barracks). They came to school each day in the army bus and usually only stayed for a few years. Mr Rabbets, the Headmaster, also had a photo of the upper school children but I only have a very poor photocopy and with no names. A list of names can be found on page 37.

Council Comment By Cr Virginia West Scenic Rim Regional Council

DRAFT PLANNING SCHEME STATUS

Council appreciates the time and effort of community members who contributed to more than 550 submissions to the Draft Scenic Rim Planning Scheme. Most of these submissions were well considered and supported with evidence and we have been encouraged by the keen community interest. Council is currently assessing all the issues raised. Common themes have been matters relating to the environment, lot sizes, land uses in rural areas, population growth, rural tourism and infrastructure planning. Through the Planning Scheme, Council is required to achieve the objectives of the Queensland Government’s South East Queensland Regional Plan and State Planning Policy. In coming months, Council will be working to ensure the Planning Scheme meets these objectives and also reflects the aspirations of the community for the Scenic Rim before submitting the proposed scheme to the State Government for its review. While the majority of submissions were related to Planning Scheme issues, there were also a number that addressed matters outside the scope of the Planning Scheme and these will be considered through different processes. However, we reaffirm that it is our intention to provide individual responses to all submitters.

MOBILE LIBRARY SERVICE AT BEECHMONT

While the Back Creek Bridge construction is still in progress it is not possible to safely park the Mobile Library van in its usual place on Beechmont Road beside Graceleigh Park. Until construction is complete in early July, a smaller van will visit Beechmont as per the usual schedule and will stop by the bus shelter opposite the Beechmont Community Centre from 2pm to 4pm. Books will need to be requested online from the Scenic Rim Regional Council website. Go to Library Catalogue https:/scenic rim.spydus.com and place your request, specifying Beechmont as the pickup location. Books can be returned via this service, too. If you have any queries, please phone Beaudesert Library on 5540 5142.

The huge cost was always a problem but with many hours of hard work and dedication the committee received substantial funding from the Federal and State Government which enabled the vision to become a reality last month. This has been a huge project with significant environmental and community outcomes.

MEMORIAL UPGRADE

The memorial upgrade in D J Smith added a special touch to this years Anzac Day ceremonies which were attended by ever increasing numbers of local residents and visitors. There is still some work to be completed in following months around the perimeter of the park. The project was a joint partnership between the Canungra RSL Sub Branch and Council.

Nature’s Gems

Scarlet Honeyeater (Myzomela sanguinolenta) By Melissa Whitby

Pinnocchio - ID 76225

Cat - Domestic Medium Hair Cross Male Colour - Ginger / White Desexed Yes Age - 8Yrs 4Mths 3Wks (approx) Price $50.00 Hello Hoomans my name is Pinocchio and I’m 8 years old. I have been at the shelter for 3 long months. I’ve lost who I used to be... I am trying to be the happy boy I used to be.... But I’m so lost and broken hearted since my special Hooman passed. Sometimes I get grumpy and a bit angry at the people who have cared for me while I’ve been at the shelter, I don’t mean it... I just really miss my bed, the toys I used to have, my special spots at home where I used lie in the sun and watch the world go by, but more than anything in this world my hooman Dad, I miss our night time cuddles, mid day naps and the safety of a loving home that I hope one day I will have again.

Australian birds are some of the most colourful in the world. One such bird is the Scarlet Honeyeater. The best way to recognise this small bird is by seeing the male of the species. With a vivid red head, breast and rump, this small bird cannot be mistaken for anything else in South-east Queensland. Females are a dull brown in colour all over with only a splash of red near the base of the beak. Scarlet Honeyeaters have a range which extends from Cooktown in North Queensland along the east coast of Australia to near Melbourne in Victoria. Usually, this bird is observed high in the canopy of flowering trees feeding amongst the blossoms. Small numbers of the birds may congregate in the same flowering tree. Flowering Bottlebrush trees are particularly favoured and as the trees do not grow very tall, this has been where I have had my best views. Scarlet Honeyeaters will utilise a number of habitat types including vegetation along watercourses, rainforests, paperbarks and suburban gardens with suitable blossoming trees and shrubs. One of the best places to see Scarlet Honeyeaters up close is at the Eagleby wetlands, Eagleby. I have also observed the birds nesting at this site. The nest was well concealed in foliage several metres off the ground. Even now after all the years of observing Scarlet Honeyeaters, I never cease to be dazzled by the vivid red of the males. The best way to know whether the birds are present in an area is to listen for their call. Once you have pinpointed the call, be patient and this stunning bird will reveal itself. Scarlet Honeyeaters are relatively common throughout their range and for people starting out bird watching, I would suggest starting with this species to hone identification skills. I can guarantee that you will never get sick of looking at them!

If you think you have room in your home and heart for this beautiful boy come in and meet him today. To meet any of the animals available for adoption, visit the AWL Gold Coast Rehoming Centre:

The Grevilleas By Susan Cully

Grevilleas are a member of the Protea family, sharing a noble ancestry with other family members found throughout the southern hemisphere. Gardeners love them for their variety, colour, shape, adaptation and the yearlong variety of flowering species. Birds adore them for their nectar. Their blooms often consist of 100 or more individual clustering flowers. The flowers are recognised as appearing in one of two arrangements: the ‘spider’ arrangement and the ‘toothbrush’ arrangement. The development, delivery and distribution of pollen from these flowers is quite a story. The following three stages are described on the ANPSA website: 1.

In bud, each flower appears as an elongated narrow tube (the perianth) comprising

four segments each having an anther containing pollen at its tip. 2.

As the flower opens, the perianth segments separate to reveal a narrow style.

Just before the flower fully opens the anthers transfer their pollen to the tip of the style (the stigma). 3.

Finally, the style separates from the perianth. At this stage the style and stigma,

with attached pollen, is called a ‘pollen presenter’ (that is,. it is ‘presenting’ the pollen to a pollinator, usually a bird or small marsupial, which acts as the agent to transfer pollen from one flower to another for fertilisation. If you are travelling out towards Moonie, western Queensland, it is worth visiting the home of the very popular Robyn Gordon hybrid grevilleas. They were developed by David Gordon and named after his daughter who had died in childhood. (From Glenmorgan travel west along Surat Developmental Road to the internationally recognized Myall Park Botanic Garden. The beautiful grounds of native flora are home to the famous Robyn Gordon grevilleas. You will find a series of relaxing walks through the native

As the Sun makes its way through Taurus, so normally you would feel like you are being brought to ground, as part of an existential effort to keep you sensible. With Uranus passing through Taurus, it’s a little different this year. Make the efforts others have previously made for you. These are interesting times. Rigidity is clearly not an attractive option; but then too chaos leaves a lot to be desired. Your common sense is required in a multitude of different locations this month. News from St Luke’s By Di Ayscough Easter services at St Luke’s were very well attended and Good Friday saw a combined service with the United Church. This is an important time of the Christian Calendar as people around the world gather to renew their dedication to God and to be thankful he died so we might be free from our sins. With so many negative things happening in our world it is especially important to know who we can turn to. From 30th May till 9th June, St Luke’s will dedicate time and prayer for our world, using the resources of the “Thy Kingdom Come”. Thy Kingdom Come is a global prayer movement that invites Christians around the world to pray for more people to come to know Jesus. What started in 2016 as an invitation from the Archbishop of Canterbury to the Church of England, has grown into an international and ecumenical call to prayer. If you wish to pray at St Luke’s during this period, there is a key at the visitor’s centre for you to gain entry, if the church is not open. To spend a quiet moment in thought and prayer at St Luke’s, could help change your day and even your life. Our new organ is a valuable addition to our services. The sound is amazing and our singing has improved. We are grateful to the local Bendigo Bank for providing the funds to purchase this. The next big fundraising function at St Luke’s is our Annual Dinner on Friday 12th July. We are limited to 40 guests so if you have never been, I invite you to come along. $30pp cover your fourcourse meal, a ticket in the lucky door prize and free entertainment.

Jonah takes out Australian Champion

Over the Easter break, Jonah Parry competed in the 2019 O’pen Bic (now O’pen Skiff) Australian Championships at the Whitsunday Sailing Club. It was a great regatta, sailed in variable conditions from light to stormy and fluky winds - challenging conditions for all competitors. Jonah won his first National Title, winning Gold in U16. Jonah’s parents, Nathalie and Peter Parry, were delighted with the result and said Jonah achieved well above his expectations.
