Gondwana Festival Launched

The ancient, evolving landscape of Lamington National Park was in focus as people gathered to launch the Gondwana Festival at the site of the former Binna Burra Lodge on 1st March. It was the first event held on the site since the historic lodge was razed to the ground in the September 2019 bushfires. The site, now a grassy green hill with 360-degree views of mountain ranges, was dotted with 211 carved trunk seats, representing one thousand hectares of bush impacted by the fires. Binna Burra Chairman Steve Noakes spoke of the long history of Binna Burra. “First Nations people lived in this area for thousands of years. Known as ‘Woonoongoora’ in the Yugambeh language, these mountains are sacred and spiritual, places to be nurtured and respected,” he said. “Evidence of their occupation has been found in various parts of the park, including the ‘Kweebani’ (cooking) cave on the Caves

Track.” Mr Noakes also paid tribute to locals, Romeo Lahey and Arthur Groom, who were instrumental in the establishment of Binna Burra Lodge. He said the Gondwana Festival was an opportunity to connect locals and visitors with the region’s Gondwana World Heritage-listed rainforests. “This first Gondwana Festival brings locals and visitors together to recognise the areas affected by the 2019 bushfires. In subsequent years, we plan to continue this innovative festival as an annual event for our Scenic Rim region along the northern entrance to the Gondwana World Heritage-listed rainforest,” he said. “We hope you will all be on the journey with us over the next few years.” The Gondwana Festival is on for all of March, with guided walks and other activities at Binna Burra Lodge, O’Reilly’s Rainforest Retreat and Mt Barney Lodge. HUMANS of CANUNGRA

Nora Jones

By Keer Moriarty Photography by Katherine O’Brien Photography

When Nora Jones told reps from shoe companies that she wanted to open a shoe store in Canungra, they looked at her like she was crazy. Six years later the very successful business owner has no regrets - and a couple of very cute French Bulldogs to boot!

We know you as the owner of The Shoe Vault and a keen golfer, but what did you do before you opened the shop? I did 19 years in merchandising, in the magazine industry. I used to put up all the magazines and display them beautifully. I also used to do merchandising in the supermarkets. You obviously have a good eye for styling, but how did you go from that to owning a shoe shop? Well, I started playing golf. I got my first set of golf clubs for my fortieth birthday. The lady who owned Drummond Golf at Springwood and Wolloongabba ask me if I wanted to come and work for her. I said, “Yep, I’ll try that” and the thing I grew to love there was selling golf shoes. Really? Well, you got paid extra for the amount of sales you had. The men liked selling the golf clubs because they

were the expensive things and they left me to sell the apparel and golf balls and the shoes - the cheaper stuff. Was it a bit of a male dominated industry? Oh, terribly! But I didn’t mind because I liked working there and when I got the right shoe for the right foot it was happy days. So I became the shoe specialist at Drummond Golf. Then a friend of mine Cheryl, who I went to school with, worked at a shoe shop in Maleny and she said to me you should open a shoe shop. Matthew (Nora’s husband) always wanted me to go out on my own and go into business for myself. We looked at buying a few businesses, then we looked at this building and Matthew said, “What can you put in there?” And I thought, “I can do a shoe shop here”. Canungra reminds me of Maleny ten years

ago, not as big but the same beautiful feel. My friend gave me phone numbers of suppliers. I sat down with Warren Spranklin, lovely man, and his rep Murray Healing and I said “I want to have a shoe shop like Annie’s got in Maleny”. Their jaws dropped and they looked at me like I was an idiot. They can’t believe how well the shop is doing. It’s become a destination... I have customers from Toowoomba, Gold Coast, Kyogle ... everywhere. They come here and there’s so many different shoes that you don’t see in the big shops because I go out and hand pick them. I have to ask about Louis, he’s a bit of a celebrity! Well, I always wanted a French Bulldog. My Dad passed away and left me some money. He had a love of lots of things (laughs) - alcohol, horses, small dogs,

Nora Jones with Electra and Louis women, and other things, not necessarily in that order. He lived a very full life. When he left me the money I thought Dad would be happy I spent his money on a small dog. I wouldn’t normally spend that much on a dog but I knew he would make me happy. The other dog? Electra. I wanted a friend for Louis, a puppy but the breeder had Electra and she brought her to the shop. She took one look at Louis, growled and was like “Get lost fatty, don’t look at me, I hate you already”. I agreed to take her home on the proviso

if they didn’t get on I could give her back to the breeder. Louis is so good, he just loved her and let her do whatever she wanted, he was like “yes dear, yes dear”. Now they do everything together, eat together, sleep together, play together. The funny thing is before I got Electra, Louis had a lot of skin problems and was on medication and now he has flare ups but it has all settled down. He just needed a girlfriend. That’s right, they love each other and they are both so happy!

Residents Demand Future Infrastructure

Canungra residents are calling on the State Government to support the growth of the town with infrastructure. Local resident, Mark Conway said he has emailed the Department of State Development, Local Government and Planning; the Queensland Premier; Member for Scenic Rim Jon Krause and Council about the lack of infrastructure. “We have been under water restrictions in Canungra for as long as I can remember because the creek can’t support the current residents without water being tanked in when the creek drops,” said Mr Conway. There are 300 homes approved to be built in Canungra Rise and Regal Ridge. An application is before Council for an Over nicRim #OneSce

50s Lifestyle Village with 180 homes proposed, also utilising the town water supply. “Both Seqwater and Queensland Urban Utilities have made it very clear they have no intention of connecting the town to either Hinze Dam or the main water grid. Tanking water in is laughable and anyone with some level of education would realise it is a pretty poor band aid to a growing issue.” Mr Conway also asked how increased traffic and parking is being catered for. He said the response from the Department was to refer him to Council, despite these issues being State Government responsibilities. A spokesperson for Seqwater said the Canungra Water Treatment Plant is capable of producing a

Getting Inside the Mind of a Dog By Susie Cunningham No-one can get inside the mind of a dog quite like Casey Cainan can. The Illinbah resident, a veteran animal trainer, has trained at least 1000 animals in his time, from elephants and camels, lions and tigers through to mice and birds. It all started with dogs. Casey grew up in the circus in America. When he was about 10 years old and got his first dog, he taught it tricks based on what he observed animal trainers doing around him. Now, he has been training animals for about 36 years all over the world, working in zoos, the circus and movies. He moved down under with his Australian partner Nikki Ogle, after they met while working in the circus in America.

About a year and a half ago, Casey’s work brought them to the Canungra district, to train two young tigers for Zelie and Craig Bullen of Animals All Round. When COVID-19 put the brakes on most movie animal training work, Casey established his own dog training business, Lone Star Animals, at Illinbah. Since starting Lone Star Animals in 2020, Casey has seen more than 140 dogs and his services are in high demand across south-east Queensland and northern New South Wales. He runs the business with the help of Nikki and of employee Katrina Ashton who, having been born into the family behind the Ashton Circus,

Casey Cainan, Cinnamon and Banjo at home in Illinbah. has been training animals her whole life. Casey said his lifetime of work across the world had taught him all animals can be trained. “It can seem really complicated but it’s really the most black and white thing,” he said. “See it from the animal’s perspective – all you have to figure out what the ani-

mal wants, and use that to reward them, or take that away to discipline them.” Casey, who has two of his own cattle dogs Cinnamon and Banjo and more often than not has clients’ dogs boarding at his place, said there is nowhere he would rather be. “I honestly would much rather spend my time around animals than peo-

ple, that’s just my personality,” he said. “And I would rather live here than anywhere I’ve ever lived in my life. You drive or ride a horse through this valley, and you’ve got friends all along this road, the Bullen place is a kilometre that way, and it’s like you’re in paradise.”

War Animal Remembrance Service By Col Lee

Canungra’s War Animal Remembrance Service on 24th February drew a small but respectful and dedicated crowd. Those who gathered show their deepest appreciation in remembering the animals who served, their riders, drivers, handlers and the Veterinary Corps that did so much to patch up thousands of wounded animals. During the service, Harry Chauval and the men and horses who successfully closed with the enemy and captured the town and water supply at Beersheba were remembered; one of the last great light horse charges in military history. Local businesses and community members have the opportunity to connect at the World of Work - Scenic Rim Careers and Business Expo on Thursday 18th March in Beaudesert. Mayor Greg Christensen said the World of Work builds on the successful Scenic Rim Jobs and Skills Fest, which was held in November 2019. “We already have 25 exhibitors lined up from various industries including healthcare, defence, hospitality, tourism, turf, transport and construction - there’s something for everyone.” Lisa Bradley of Oz Paragliding and Hang Gliding said she is looking forward to letting people know about career paths in her business. “People don’t realise they can have a career as an outdoor instructor,” she said. “It is sort of a dream job. There is a lot of training, like an apprenticeship but it can lead to big opportunities.” Mayor Christensen

Oz Paragliding and Hang Gliding’s Lisa Bradley with her parents. Photo: Supplied. said while the World of Work will have a jobs board of local vacancies, the event was not only designed for job seekers. “The main objective of the World of Work is to make connections,” he said. “There’s a great range of businesses within the Scenic Rim, and attendees will be able to meet with local employers and understand more about what they do and what types of jobs are available now or in the future. “Attendees will also be able to ask about career and training pathways, as well as find out infor-

mation about apprenticeships and traineeships. “This is really important for our young people as they start navigating their future career paths. “These young people need to know there are meaningful career options for them to pursue that are close to home, so they can be part of our region’s exciting future.” More information about the World of Work, and a full list of exhibitors is available online www.scenicrim.qld.gov. au/world-of-work.

Organiser of the Canungra Village Garden clean up, April Turner, is urging residents to get involved to help clean up Canungra on Saturday 6th March 2021. “Residents can meet at 9am at the community garden and get involved in some gardening before cleaning up our town of rubbish,” she said. Moriarty Park’s Clean Up Australia event is on Sunday 7th March and covers Moriarty Park and surrounding streets. Residents can meet at the car park at 8am to collect gloves and bags from organiser, Cr Virginia West. There has never been a better time to tackle the surge in single-use disposable items, such as takeaway coffee cups,

food packaging, masks and sanitised wipes; all of which have polluted local parks, bushland, streets, waterways and beaches. Clean Up Australia Chairman, Pip Kiernan, says this year has seen disruption to our lives, not least of all to our local environments which have been impacted by increased uptake of single-use, disposable items. In response to COVID-19, registration by QR code is required on the day and hand sanitiser, bags and gloves are provided for volunteers.

Sweet New Farm Venture A new crayfish farm at Tabragalba, between Canungra and Beaudesert, is expected to be producing tens of thousands of Redclaw crayfish by the end of 2021. Australian Sweetwater Crays, on Beaudesert-Nerang Road, is a family-owned business, with Tamborine father-son duo Peter and Alexander van Velzen, both engineers, at the helm. The project, which has been in the works for about two and a half years, is now well and truly becoming a reality. Just recently, the van Velzens seeded two of the property’s ponds with a combined 70,000 ‘craylings’ – the name given to baby crayfish. Each crayling was about .02 grams at the time they were seeded, and those that grow to maturity are

expected to reach up to 100 grams each in nine to 12 months’ time. And it is just the beginning, with the van Velzens having constructed 12 ponds as well as a 20 megalitre dam so far, with plans to grow the operation to 35 ponds. Peter van Velzen said the Scenic Rim was a prime location to do business. “The Scenic Rim is the best. It’s nigh on perfect for what we want to do. It has a huge catchment area that will fill up our dam from the surrounding hills and the soil is very good,” he said. “The Scenic Rim is very good for its eat local movement, and we’ll be looking to supply direct to restaurants, to retailers and even direct to the public.” He said local businesses had been instrumental in

Angela and Susan and various others from their team showed great dexterity in navigating the regulatory and bureaucratic space we had to get through,” he said. “The local earthmoving crowd that we used,

Digwright based at Tabragalba, have been exceptional, easy to deal with and very professional.” He said Australian Sweetwater Crays was the beginning of an exciting new venture for his family. “I was going to retire then my son had a brilliant idea,” he said. “One of the really cool

things is I’m a micro-electronic engineer and my son is a chemical engineer and with some aspects of the project, like research and development, we work together using our engineering skills.” “But most importantly, I get to work with my son and the vast majority of the time we have a lot of fun doing it.”

Letters to the Editor Possum Rescue at the Pharmacy! On behalf of Wildcare I would like to thank everyone involved, and indeed the many inconvenienced for a short time whilst a stray Short Eared Possum was retrieved from the big red windmill at our Pharmacy. A lovely lass from Bean In called to say a lethargic looking possum had been outside the café and up the windmill all morning. He was not in a good spot as it was raining and the roof was slippery so his only safe exit was compromised! Bit of a tricky one to get to without the risk of

him bolting into the traffic and potentially causing an accident as well as possibly meeting his demise pretty gruesomely so a plan was hatched! Toby grabbed a net, I commandeered a handsome, very tall soldier who had timed his coming into town for a coffee well (for us and the possum) and gave him another net, Toby’s mate stopped the traffic ... and towel in hand I scaled the windmill. Slippery it was and anxious I was … quite an audience by now and this could all go pear shaped in a big way in a nanosecond; my wee legs started shaking as I strained to reach high enough to get bushes. And also some carpentry work inside. Thanks Bob we have a lovely view. Toby Hall did a great job clearing long grass and bushes at the front. The Post Office for delivering parcels twice, because I didn’t hear them come the first time. Much appreciated. And not forgetting my wonderful neighbours Wayne and Anna, without who I would be in a heap on the floor. It is times like these when you find out that people are really good. Life saver but hilarious with hindsight … wishing someone had videoed the whole thing as it would have been so funny. Anyhoo, managed to guide possum into nets, yep sandwiched between ‘em both and the whole package popped into a koala cage. He looked quite well but because I have had so many possums lately who have had or been suspected of having rodenticide we rang the Currumbin Wildlife Hospital Ambulance and rendezvoused with Amy in the new

ADVERTISING FEATURE - INTERIOR DESIGN

Home Styling for Seasonal Change

Canungra’s green patchwork landscape is set to transform this season into hues of orange, red, ochre and gold as the temperatures cool, says Interior Designer Nikki Hobbs of Hobbs Building & Interiors. “Embrace the seasonal change and outdoor colour palette to set the mood inside your home,” says Nikki. She advises starting by adding layers of neutral linen fabrics and natural textures like olive leaf and ornamental tree foliage from the garden. Then swap summer coconut scents for spicier notes; such as cinnamon and vanilla bean. Switching bed linen to heavier fabrics for approaching cooler nights, complete with a woven throw rug for added feel, not only freshens the room but is practical

preparation for cooler weather.

Breakout Box

Bookshelf styling: 1. Arrange all your niknaks in one area and begin to think about colour similarities, 2. Initially place larger items sporadically, including stacked books in a zig-zag pattern, 3. Pepper the shelves with trinkets of similar colour and importantly ones you love, and 4. Add pops of Autumn colour to enhance the look and feel, such as candles and blooms from My Country Escape and Lydia’s Garden. If you’d like further assistance in this space, Hobbs Building & Interiors is proud to introduce a new home-styling service, providing Canungra locals and beyond with a practical plan of attack for major aesthetic trans-

moodboards proposing colour schemes with modern country-style furniture and homewares, plus a furniture layout to scale. Hobbs can also source and install upon request.” Check out Hobbs’ latest ‘How to Styling’ vid-

Extended Trading at The Headmasters Café The Headmaster’s Café is now open on Mondays and Tuesdays for delicious breakfasts and lunches. BAPA Committee members said the café is enjoying increasing patronage during weekend trade so the decision to extend into Monday and Tuesday was an easy one to make. With fresh herbs and salad items sourced from the adjacent community garden, the meals are light, fresh and flavoursome. New colourful street signage is being installed to promote this country style café. New hours see the cafe open Saturday and Sunday from 8am and Monday and Tuesday from 8.30am for superb tasty meals and refreshments and the perfect place to enjoy the stunning views. Breakfast buddies John Barkla, formerly from Canungra enjoyed his

Renovations to Start Work is about to start on the renovation and repair of the Old School building and the former demountable classroom. Local builder Steve Haebich of Brace Constructions was a former student at the school and remembers it fondly. He said it will bring back many memories for him as he and carpenter Jake Habor attend to much needed repairs to his old school rooms. Dinner Explores Recovery Journey

The Beechmont community’s road to recovery and the supporting role played by the arts as part of the journey will be explored during the Scenic Rim’s March Arts Dinner Live and Online. This free evening event on Tuesday 9th March will bring together creatives and members of the Beechmont community who were impacted by the September 2019 bushfires. The discussion panel includes Lisa Groom, grand-daughter of Binna Burra Lodge founder Arthur Groom and who now heads the eco-tourism company, ParkTours, established by her parents

Tony and Connie Groom. “Eighteen months on from the bushfires, this is a good time for the community to take stock,” Lisa said. Jessica Brown, the driving force behind the Wildfire Creative Recovery Project at Beechmont, will also be part of the panel discussion. Joining Lisa and Jessica on the arts dinner discussion panel are Benjamin Allmon, and Scotia Monkivitch. Benjamin Allmon is an author and freelance journalist, who has walked 700 kilometres around the Scenic Rim capturing stories of resilience, connection and residents’

deep relationship to the place they call home. Scotia Monkivitch is the Manager of Creative Recovery Network, the national agency advocating for the role of culture and the arts in disaster management. The March Arts Dinner Live and Online will be held at Providence Farm Hall, Beechmont from 6pm on Tuesday 9th March and live streamed from 6.30pm to 7.30pm. Tickets to the event are now fully booked, however the community is invited to register for the live streamed discussion by visiting www.liveatthecentre.com.au.

COUNCIL WATCH WITH AMANDA HAY

Email: frangipani1601@gmail.com The following are my views, not those of the Editor. Any threats of legal action can be directed to me.

Brickbat My question asked during Public Question Time on 23rd February regarding the level of support sponsorship provided by council to the applicant in relation to a successful grant application lodged under the Queensland Government’s Growing Tourism Infrastructure Fund was not answered. The Mayor cited “confidentiality and privacy legislation”. It was stated that the correct avenue would be a Right to Information (RTI) application. I have lodged an RTI with the relevant State Government de-

partment on 11th February 2021.

Bouquet #1 In a win for common sense, Council has advised that compliance activity (Show Cause Notice) involving a woman in her 70s regarding alleged unlawful clearing of native vegetation has been withdrawn. This followed an unannounced compliance visit and further meeting at Council - both which were audio recorded without voluntary disclosure.

Bouquet #2 Council is to be commended for its actions in adopting the Refined Flood Study for the Canungra Township and proposal to prepare a Minor Amendment to update the Flood Hazard Overlay in the Scenic Rim Planning Scheme 2020. Let’s hope these actions will have a positive impact on those property owners currently unable to obtain insurance on their properties.

Petition By now the entire Scenic Rim should be aware of the petition to the Premier, launched regarding Council’s lack of transparency. I urge every person concerned about the erosion of ratepayers’ rights to sign, either the paper version or via Change. org. Remember – each member of a household

can sign separately – numbers count.

Development Applications of Interest • MCU21/017 – 10 - 26 Finch Rd, Canungra. Shopping Centre. Lodged 23rd February 2021 for a further extension of time. This one has a long history, going back to 2006, involved several change requests, a court decision and now a second extension of time application. COVID-19 is stated to be the culprit. At what point does the developer intend to actually construct the development, given the hard-fought battle to gain approval? • EXE21/001 – 39 Regal Drive, Canungra. Submitted 16th February 2021. Applicant instigated Exemption Certificate. No documents available.

• EXE21/002 – 20 Seymour Drive, Canungra. Submitted 18th February 2021. Applicant instigated Exemption Certificate. No documents available.

Court Actions of Interest Magistrates Court – Planning and Environment Appeals: • MCU20/072 – Approved Childcare Centre, Brooklands Drive, Beaudesert. Appeal lodged in the Planning and Environment Court on 18th February 2021 by the four persons who lodged (valid) submissions against the application. The rule is that only those who make a valid submission can lodge/participate in an appeal.

These are my own personal views. I do not purport to speak on behalf of Council.

Council This month marks one year since the local elections and it’s been a great experience. I again thank all those who voted for me and acknowledge my opponent Keer Moriarty, who has now gone onto bigger and better things with the establishment of the Beaudesert Bulletin, which has been an outstanding success for the Beaudesert area. Well done Keer, and I look forward to our next coffee.

I have been busy the last 12 months helping the residents of Division Two with issues ranging from roads, drainage, sport and recreation facilities, footpaths and walking trails. I have to say it’s the most enjoyable part of the job. Having a resident come to me with a problem and then getting a successful outcome is very rewarding. I have been watching other Council’s meetings on YouTube and firmly believe that we have the best run ordinary meeting that I have seen. I know that some residents would like to see it more open however, what we don’t want is for it to turn into a talk fest where we go around in circles

where Councillors are repeating themselves. I am also very vocal in Council meetings ensuring that I ask questions of Council officers so that residents are kept informed on the issues and how I came to make a decision. During each item we can ask clarifying questions of the report and then ask general questions followed by five minutes of debate each where I can give my points on why we should vote a certain way on an item.

It is very structured but it means that the meeting is conducted in a professional manner.

Roadworks The Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) will soon commence bridge maintenance works on Radke Bridge, Beaudesert-Nerang Road, Tabragalba. Works are scheduled to commence in mid-March 2021 and are expected to be completed by midMay 2021, weather permitting.

Works will be undertaken Monday to Friday between 6am and 6pm, weather permitting. This will include lane closures with delays of up to 20 minutes and speed reduced to 40 kilometres per hour.

Thought of the Day We will sin and we will make mistakes. No matter how hard we try to avoid it, we can’t help it. We are human, after all, and prone ‘to err.’ - The Bible.

CONTACT ME I am always available to talk directly with residents on telephone on my mobile 0436 327 434 or email jeff.m@scenicrim.qld.gov.au. Follow me on Facebook – Jeff McConnell Councillor for Division 2 Scenic Rim Regional Council I am happy to meet with anyone who requests a meeting.

Canungra’s History My Grandmother’s kitchen was a small room separate from the main house with a little bridge connecting the two. A stove recess, just big enough to house the old wood burning stove, jutted out from the back wall with a chimney through the roof to cope with the smoke from the burning wood. When a new, larger house was built in 1932, the kitchen was included under the main roof. The kitchen facilities were still the same wood burning iron stove in its recess out the back. This stove not only provided heat on its flat top and deep oven for cooking, but also produced the only hot water available for a cup of

tea, cooking and washing (everyone/everything). To ensure boiling water for tea, an enamel or iron kettle and large saucepan were always on the stove. Washing up was done with a tin basin and tray on the kitchen table with the dishes dried with a tea towel while they were still hot. These were put away on the dresser or cupboard shelves. A lever, on the other side of the stove from the fire box, could be moved to send more heat around the oven when Grandma was baking. Depending on the type of wood being used, the heat generated could vary considerably so the cook had to know her oven to have continued success. If

Meals were eaten in the kitchen as the dining room was only used on formal occasions. Long term cooking, such as stews and roasts, would need the fire in the stove to be kept going. Often cakes and stews were done at the

same time to make the most of kindling and wood. Usually the men of the household kept up the necessary supply of chips, kindling and blocks of wood in the wood box beside the stove.

Orchid Show Cancelled

The 2021 Autumn Show for Orchids and Foliage Plants due to be held on the weekend of 13th and 14th March 2021, has been cancelled. Beaudesert Districts Orchid and Foliage Society Secretary, Peter Rice said the Society has had little success in conducting recent shows. “The 2019 Spring Show was held at a time of great emergency vehicle activity involved in the bushfires,” said Peter.

“The 2020 Autumn Show was held at a time when COVID was in its infancy and the 2020 Spring Show scheduled for September 2020 was cancelled altogether as per Government mandate.” “It has been decided to cancel the forthcoming show, because of the possibility of further restrictions being introduced.” The Society hopes to conduct events again in 2022.

MOTORING NEWS

Mitsubishi have a lot of firsts and one of them was the introduction to the Australian market of a plug-in hybrid SUV in the form of the Outlander PHEV in 2014. The 2021 GSR trim level includes unique two-tone, 18-inch alloy wheels and black exterior trim, giving the Outlander PHEV a sharper look, though it doesn’t really live up to the GSR name of the past. It scores Bilstein monotube front struts with ball-bearing upper insulator assemblies, Bilstein rear dampers and increased front and rear spring rates to justify the black GSR badge on its tailgate. The Outlander PHEV GSR is powered by an all-alloy, 2.4-litre, naturally aspirated four-cylinder petrol engine, featuring Mitsubishi’s ‘MIVEC’ variable valve timing tech,

and producing 94kW at 4500rpm and 199Nm at 4500rpm. It’s joined by a 60kW/137Nm electric motor on the front axle and a 70kW/195Nm unit at the rear. Mitsubishi calls the twin-motor set-up ‘Super All Wheel Control’ (S-AWC) and aside from enhancing on-road stability it gives the PHEV GSR off-road ability, but in a mild way only. The combined cycle fuel economy claim (ADR 81/02 urban, extra-urban) is 1.9L/100km, emitting 43g/km of CO2 in the process. If you keep the battery topped up and use more of the electric site, then this is possible. Running on fuel it was closer to 6L/100km. There are active systems like ABS, EBD, EBA, and traction and stability controls, active tech includes, ‘Forward Collision Mitigation’

equipped with seven airbags (driver and front passenger front and side, full-length curtain, and driver’s knee). It drives rather well although it is a little firm. The sporty suspension does not give like many other SUV’s and when you are out for the weekend and exploring this is

NEW PHYSIO By Alison Ford

Martin and I are very excited to be able to announce that we have a new physiotherapist joining our team. We have been very busy and need the help after three years of building our ‘little’ country practice. Kathryn Holzberger has been working as a physiotherapist for ten years in Hospitals as well as in Private Practice and is returning to working after a prolonged maternity leave as she has two little daughters just 13 months apart in age. She has recently returned from living near Canberra and settled on acreage in Milora near Boonah - so she is almost a local! Her passion is treating a wide variety of patients offering a diverse range of skills including Clinical Pilates and Dry Needling.

Kathryn Holzberger. Kathryn spent 11 years as an international rower including time spent overseas rowing for her university and brings this experience into her physiotherapy practice.

She’s passionate about keeping people fit and healthy for the lifestyle they choose to live. Please pop in to say ‘hi’ and welcome her into our community.

LNP Leader David Crisafulli and I met with concerned locals and Cr Virginia West in February to hear directly concerns about the lack of water planning for development around Canungra. This impacts not just Canungra town, but also those who need water downstream, and out of town on acreage. We need investment in water assets from the Queensland Government (and roads too, for that matter), and fast – and if that can’t hap-

pen, the State must stop allowing more and more homes to be built here. Trucking water into town every year is not ok. Canungra on water restrictions for months each year is not ok. The planners need to get this straight in their mind and change the plans accordingly. I look forward to working together with Councillor West to make this case, plain and simple, to the Queensland Government.

NATURE’S GEMS Sharp-tailed Sandpiper (Calidris acuminata)

By Melissa Whitby Some of Australia’s most startling international bird visitors fall into the group known as ‘shorebirds’. Many people ask me what is so fascinating about a group of birds that are all brown and look the same. My response is that ‘shorebirds’ can clock up frequent flier miles like no other wildlife group in the world. The first migratory shorebird that I ever encountered at close quarters was the Sharp-tailed Sandpiper. This bird comes to Australia as a summer migrant and breeds in the Arctic tundra in Siberia during our winter months. Usually the Sharp-tailed Sandpipers arrive in August and leave March to April for their northern breeding grounds. The plumage of Sharp-tailed Sandpipers in Australia during the summer months is their non-breeding brown colouring. The easiest way to identify this bird is by size, its slightly downturned bill and distinctive rufous-coloured forehead. Sharp-tailed Sandpipers can be observed in a

Sharp-tailed Sandpiper. variety of freshwater and brackish environments. Many times I have observed these birds singly or in small groups. Their preferred food is invertebrates which they probe the mud for along the wet margins of their favoured habitats such as salt marshes and freshwater wetlands. Sharp-tailed Sandpipers will gather in small groups with other shorebird species in roost sites to rest whilst not feeding. This bird species is one of the more common shorebird species and frequents most areas of Australia other than the driest deserts. The best time

to look for Sharp-tailed Sandpipers is through the summer months and to start looking in wetland areas that have low vegetation cover and shallow waters. My first encounter with a Sharp-tailed Sandpiper was just outside Canungra at a small wetland area with low vegetation around the edge and a shallow wet margin. I would encourage anyone who is interested in birds to take the time to become familiar with birds such as Sharp-tailed Sandpipers. It is a great way to hone your bird watching skills!

Native Rosella

CANUNGRA RSL SUB-BRANCH By David Day, President Canungra RSL Sub Branch

By Susan Cully The large white flowers of this native Hibiscus are often seen along the roadside between Beechmont and Canungra as well as Nerang. Hibiscus heterophyllus, known as Native Rosella, is in the family Malvaceae. It is a small tree with white, pink or yellow flowers with a dark red centre, looking very much like a large Okra flower, one of its cousins in the veggie patch. The name is derived from ‘hibiscus’, the Greek word for Mallow, and ‘heterophyllus’, a combination of two Latin words, ‘heteros’ meaning ‘different’ and ‘phyllus’ for ‘leaf’ referring to the variable leaves of this species. It is a tall, fast-growing shrub producing an abundance of flowers and edible fruits, attracting many native birds and insects to the garden. It is particularly attractive to lorikeets, honeyeaters and butterflies. Hibiscus heterophyllus has a natural range from the Lockhart River in Far North Queensland through eastern and central New South Wales, preferring warm, moist environments. The species is frost tolerant in our area. There is natural variation in flower colour, largely a result of the environment within which it grows. Yellow in northern Queensland while further south they tend to be white. H. heterophyllus grows as a rounded shrub, sometimes up

The recent Annual General Meeting of St Luke’s Guild saw Mrs Anne King taking the reigns of President following the stepping down of the former President, David Ayscough. Louise Goodman remains as Treasurer and Jan Armstrong will continue as Secretary. Congratulations to each one and thank you to David for his work during the past three years. We are very grateful to Bill Gubbins for his expertise and handy work in closing in the pavilion with louvres. These have added protection against inclement weather and look very professional. Thank you, Bill, for a job well done. The first major fund-raising activity for 2021 will be our annual Car Boot Sale to be held in the church grounds on Saturday 13th March commencing at 7am and concluding at 1pm. To book a site, at a cost of just $10, please phone David on 5533 7070. However, if you do not want to sell anything why not come along and enjoy the morning. You may find a bargain, buy some home baked cooking, relishes, jam or plants. There will be a Sausage Sizzle and Devonshire tea and coffee. You will certainly find something to entertain you and you are most welcome to attend Little Lukies is well underway with the regular attendance of primary school children and some parents who stay for a cuppa. If you have heard laughter and enjoyment happening each Monday at 3pm you can be sure it will be Little Lukies. Thanks to Jan Armstrong for bringing this to life. If you would like to come to church on Sunday morning but are afraid your children may not cope, the children will have supervised activities outside in the pavilion. Everyone is welcome at St Luke’s so feel free to come and enjoy your Sunday morning among friends.

SPORT Have Your Say About Sport and Rec Facilities

Scenic Rim Regional Council is calling for community input in the review of Council’s community, camping and sporting facilities. Mayor Greg Christensen said the review of Council’s community, camping and sporting facilities will help establish a vision for the future of the region’s sporting and recreation facilities for the next five to ten years. “We want to ensure the community, camping and sporting facili-

ties provided by Council meet the needs of the region, now and into the future to accommodate population growth, development projections, and the increase in visitors to our region, so we can all comfortably and responsibly access and enjoy our amazing back yard”, he said. “Providing locals with more opportunities to be healthy and active, and to enjoy the great outdoors is a key motivation for undertaking this review.”

Council is conducting a review of sport and recreation facilities. The review asks: • What are the needs of people using these facilities? • How can Council enhance what is already on offer? • Are infrastructure upgrades required? • Are more community, camping and sports facilities needed? • Are there environmentally sustainable solutions? “It’s important we hear from the community and stakeholders,” Cr Christensen said. “It’s important to note, the review is not about how Council-owned or operated community, camping and sports facilities are run or managed.” This information-gathering exercise will inform the drafting of Council’s new community, camping and sporting facilities strategies, which will be

available for community consultation towards the end of 2021. “Working in collaboration with external specialist, ROSS Planning, we will also be contacting key stakeholders including local clubs, organisations, schools, tourism operators and other user groups to gain insight into what their needs are, how they use these facilities and what improvements could be made,” Cr Christensen said. “I encourage community members to participate by sharing their views through the community, camping and sporting facilities survey. “The survey is available on Council’s website or can be completed in person by visiting us at your local market.” To have your say, complete the community sur-

vey online on Council’s website www.scenicrim. qld.gov.au/have-your-say or in person at the following locations: • Saturday 6th March, Beaudesert Markets, 7am to 9am; • Sunday 7th March, Tamborine Makers Markets, 10am to midday; • Saturday 13th March, Boonah Markets, 7am to 9am; • Sunday 14th March, Kooralbyn Markets, 8am to 10am; • Sunday 14th March, Canungra Village Markets, 11am to 1pm; • Saturday 27 March, Boonah Markets, 7am to 9am; • Sunday 28 March, Tamborine School Markets, 7am to 9am. The information gathering process will be open until Friday 2nd April.

Moriarty Park News Hinterland Feast What a magic event our inaugural Food Trucks and Classic Cars Hinterland Feast was! Thanks to Matt and Kat from The Design Collective for organising and those who brought trucks and cars and attended; the place had a happy community feel that many commented on and it was great to catch up with mates we haven’t seen in some time. Of course due to the immensity there were some aspects we will be better prepared for next time which will be on Easter Sunday from 3pm to 8pm. The bar got smashed figuratively speaking and without the help of Shona, Paul, Ken, Leanne, Donna and Cassie it would have been a bigger nightmare! Canungra Hotel were amazing and we have chatted with Simon and Jess about the next time. I was delighted that all eateries in town benefitted too. I am often torn about these events as I don’t want to affect businesses in town but I think everyone did well from

this one. Upstairs will be open with a bar so you can sit on the verandah and watch the proceedings. By 10.30pm the park was cleared and looked like nothing had ever taken place, although I believe there was some rubbish on Coburg Road so next time we will have a working bee to clean up. Apologies to those who had to deal with that prior to me knowing about it. We will make sure recycling bins are available too so please use them; this provides more funds to the skate park. An event is also planned for 27th June for Eat Local Week so keep an eye out for that!

Facilities Cam has been mowing like a madman and has the place looking tip top! I’m just letting him go until the novelty wears off! The long awaited and ridiculously expensive bubbler should soon be installed; so much more work and cost than we anticipated. Work will start on the Book A Court tennis courts shortly and we

Tracey Christoffel, Ingrid Gill and Tracee Baker at the Hinterland Feast. have CCTV watching over all areas of the park now, courtesy Canungra Owls Soccer Club.

Skate Park Anyone interested in getting on board and even driving the skate park project is invited to the next meeting on Monday 15th March at 6.45pm. Meetings are generally over in around an hour. We made over $4,000 from the Food trucks event which will go towards the skate park.

Clean Up Clean Up Australia day is Sunday 7th March and we will have a group meeting at 8am at Moriarty Park to collect a bag, gloves and do an hour or

CANUNGRA CANUNGRA BOWLS CLUB OWLS NEWS By Ray Hickson

By Bren Dalby It is the last chance to get on a team for this year. Nominations have to be in ASAP and, as the cost of pulling out a team after nominations is extremely high, we can’t nominate a team that is incomplete on the off chance it ‘might happen’. It would be a terrible shame if we don’t get another couple of players for the men’s team who train Mondays and play Wednesdays. We have always had a men’s team and the players we have are enthusiastic and great guys. Have a crack fellas! Please contact the Club if you wish to play this year .TODAY! We would dearly love to have more 8-9 year old boys and girls come out to play, in which case we could possibly have two teams in that bracket which would be magic!! It’s a great age to be involved in soccer even if you haven’t played before. Owlettes are gonna be back on the field this year

– that’s age 3-5 - to get a feel for the game, have some fun and exercise with your mates and develop soccer, social and teamwork skills. A terrific start to your soccer life! Great for parents too; many lifelong friendships have been made at early age soccer for both parents and children. We have installed CCTV at Moriarty Park as security is imperative we feel and we work well with Moriarty Park in applying for grants to improve the facility for all. We are very happy with the new system and the clarity of the images. New strips ordered…. lets hope we have bodies to go in them! The committee is working hard to make this year a really good year. Enquiries to Cameron Mansfield on 0418295284, or via the Canungra Owls Soccer Club Facebook page. Go the Owls! Hoot Hoot!
