Jonah Sails in to Sportsperson of the Year World Championship sailor Jonah Parry took out the 2019 FoodWorks Sportsperson of the Year Award, announced at Moriarty Park on 31st January. Jonah won gold in the 2019 O’pen Skiff U16 Australian Championships at the Whitsundays Sailing Club. His parents, Nathalie and Peter Parry, were delighted with the result and said Jonah achieved well above his expectations. Jonah has been sailing since he was eight years old and has competed in Australia and New Zealand. Even though he was amongst the youngest and lightest in his category, Jonah was just 13 when he competed in his first O’pen Skiff World Championship in 2019 in New Zealand. He achieved his top 20 goal, coming 19th in the Pre-Worlds to qualify for the World Championships. Jonah finished 33rd place in the World Championships. Jonah is training with the Southport Yacht Club Performance team under the guidance of Matt Belcher, three times World Champion and current Olympic Champion in the 470 class. Jonah currently competes in both National and State Championships. In 2019 he also achieved first in Queensland, third in New South Wales. Next month he travels to compete at the Victorian States. In April the QLD State Titles will be held at our own club, SYC; all in preparation for the 2020 Worlds in Sardinia (Italy).

Nominees for the Sportsperson of the Year were drawn from the monthly winners of the award in 2019. President, Bren Dalby stated that they were all of a very high standard. Special guest speaker Josh Torrens added to the evening as a previous recipient of the award and presented the medallions and trophy.

For Our Region to be Stronger, Keep Real Leadership with Clear Vision For four years, I have led a Council that is moving our Scenic Rim forward, based on the Scenic Rim Community Plan. There have been challenges to overcome - long term under investment in core infrastructure such as our roads, bridges, public spaces and footpaths; managing impacts from major natural disaster events; and balancing priorities within limited financial capacity. Under my leadership, we are becoming a more proactive Council. We are partnering with our communities and our businesses to deliver better results. While the job is not done – we have made a strong start. So far, we have achieved: • Reversed years of economic decline – highest ever region revenue at $1.9B. • Reversed years of job losses – over 1400 new jobs this term. • Stronger road network. • Largest investment in Community Spaces and Infrastructure since amalgamation. • Large infrastructure spend for Canungra and surrounds: • All abilities ‘Treehouse’ playground • Key council road corridors now stronger with road and bridge upgrades implemented or progressing.

• Tamborine Memorial Hall Carpark, Relocation of Council depot away from town centre. • Greater transparency – community consultations, town hall meetings, 10-year capital plan visible, open briefings for budgets. • New Planning Scheme based on “voice of community” feedback • Increased grant funding for Volunteer Groups – Sports, Environment and Community Services. • Continued advocacy for State road projects (the Canungra Town Bypass). • Commenced bushfire recovery. I share the frustration that affordability limits how fast we can deliver improvements. However, there is much that I believe we need to keep pushing forward with. My TO DO List for Canungra and surrounds includes: • Stay focussed on Bushfire Recovery and Bushfire Resilience • Progress Master Plan for Canungra Town Centre • Find solutions to parking shortages • Upgrade of Canungra Library to fully capable Community Hub • Continue to address nagging legacy issues in core infrastructure – roads, bridges and footpaths.

Beechmont Artist’s State of Diversity

Contemporary landscape artist and Beechmont resident, Kuweni Dias, has been selected as a finalist in the Queensland Regional Artist Awards. Kuweni is just one artist whose work will be showcased in the upcoming Queensland Regional Art Awards touring exhibition, State of Diversity. The Queensland Regional Art Awards is an annual visual arts prize and exhibition for established and emerging artists living in regional and remote Queensland. The 2019 awards received 173 eligible entries, with eight winners sharing in a prize pool worth more than $25,000. Now 37 of the artworks from the awards, including Kuweni’s ‘Belonging’ are on the road from February until March next year as part of touring exhibition, State of Diversity. The exhibition will visit locations including Brisbane, Charleville, Charters Towers, Roma and Moranbah. Kuweni says her art is inspired by the natural surroundings she creates in. She always works outside, making brushes and dyes from items found in the immediate area she works in. Originally from Sri Lanka, she says Beechmont has provided an ideal environment for her work.

Beechmont Artist Kuweni Dias is inspired by the natural world to create her art.

Her artist statement about ‘Belonging’ describes the mountain: “She accepts every living thing in it’s entirety, whether it’s a native, weed, farm produce, wild animal, farm animal, local, visitor or immigrant.”

Boys from the Bush Take to the Water

When Adrian Staats decided to enter his 26X Macgregor yacht, ‘Bright Eyes’, in the Surf to City Yacht Race on 1st February, his next decision was who to call on for a crew member. Adrian’s neighbour Justin Graham, who had never been on a yacht before, and might seem like an unlikely choice but Adrian says he was the best crew member he could have asked for. While it was Justin’s first time on a yacht, it was Adrian’s first race and the goal for both men was just to finish the race. “The other competitors were professional sailors with racing boats and mine is really a sporty looking family cruising boat. We came 14th out of 16 so we were really happy,” said Adrian. The race wasn’t without a few stressful moments for the pair. “I ran through things with Justin beforehand and he just handled it. He really came into his own when we got into trouble,” said Adrian. “He kept his cool when we hit an embankment just on sunset and ran aground. The race organisers asked if we wanted to pull out but we both said ‘hell, no!’”

Adrian Staats and Justin Graham won the Encouragement Award in the Surf to City Yacht Race.

“Then we lost steering in a two metre swell in Moreton Bay. I was bear hugging the outboard to keep us going, and Justin really came into his own at that point, being a mechanic he just worked away to fix it.” Adrian and Justin were buoyed by the support of other competitors who encouraged them and called out ‘Good on you, Bright Eyes’ as they finished.

The Canungra Times - March 2020

The pair were surprised to receive an award at the presentations after the race. ‘Bright Eyes’ was given the Endurance Award for completing the race in 22 hours, 38 minutes and 13 seconds and overcoming adversity in their race. Highlights of Adrian and Justin’s race can be viewed on Adrian’s YouTube channel https://youtu.be/nN_0JGmPK8w.

Local

Government John Brent

Former Mayor John Brent states he is more enthused and energised than ever in his campaign to represent residents. John asks voters to consider his expertise in local government and ability to work with multiple stakeholders to achieve major initiatives and reforms. John is determined to see grass roots engagement return to Council. “I am a fair dinkum local bloke and I’ve been very active in the community during my time away from elected life. On my return to the Mayoral role, I will be refocusing council priority to the key issues. These include roads and bridges, small business and job creation, agriculture and tourism, engagement with our youth, local contribution to the environment, lessening the impost of rates and charges, removing barriers in dealing with Council.” Of Canungra John says, “It’s been an absolute pleasure spending time here, I remember it as a stop off point on the way to the Coast with my parents and it’s always had a special place in my heart.” “What the town and Beechmont has been through in recent months is horrific, yet you will still receive a smile and chat from the locals any day of the week. These are the people I am here to deliver for. Canungra is certainly a town that comes to mind when I say ‘Let’s Get the Scenic Rim Back on Track, Together’. I ask the people of Canungra and surrounds, along with all of the Scenic Rim, to lend me your vote on the 28th March. Let’s get to work!”.

Elections Greg Christensen

2020

“Since 2016, I am proud to have led a program to bring integrity, transparency and accountability to our region’s Council. Our regional economy has enjoyed its highest revenue ($1.9b) and excellent jobs growth (over 1400 new jobs) after years of decline and job losses,” said Greg. “With a new, capable executive team we are building a Council which listens to our residents and their voice in the Community Plan. This is delivering improved communication, programs and efficiencies for the whole region, reducing upward pressure on rates and making it easier to access council services. We haven’t finished – but we’ve already come a long way. I intend to continue,” he said. “We have kept Residential (PPR) rates increases to just 1.75% annual average and Rural to just 2.14%. This compares favourably with similar local Councils.” “Under my leadership, we have delivered the strongest-ever infrastructure program across the region. Roads, bridges, public spaces, footpaths and playgrounds have been our focus, improving liveability and accessibility for our communities. As always, there is more to do.” “I am committed to delivering further improvements. My first priority will be to ensure Council maintains focus on disaster recovery activities, so important to our communities.” “I am committed to preserving our superb environment, maintaining the unique character of our communities, and encouraging the right development to continue strong jobs growth and a healthy economy.”

The Race For Mayor of Scenic Rim Tom Sharp

Tom’s campaign focus is: • Rates and Services - a fair rate for a fair service. • Consultation - ask what the people want, don’t come to them with pre-determined outcomes. • Communication - tell people what is happening in straight language. • Council Culture - educate where necessary those officers and staff, that we serve the constituency. • Bureaucracy and Red Tape - remove the blockades and confusion for fair requests, submissions and applications and give a fair and timely response. Tom was born in Beaudesert and spent his early years on the family farm at Beechmont. Following a career in stockbroking and funds management, his family returned to Beechmont in 2013 with their young daughter, so she would enjoy the quality lifestyle he had in the region while growing up. Tom’s Great Great Grandfather, J T Burnett served as councillor and founding Chairman of Normanby Shire (Harrisville) and his father, Geoff Sharp retired from office after 20 years of outstanding service to the constituents of Beaudesert Shire. Tom says he is concerned local government is removed from its constituency - and that the person in the street no longer has a voice. “It is my commitment to return the governance of this region to its citizens via the elected representatives,” said Tom, “It is time to get fair dinkum, apply common sense and provide the services the people want, effectively and efficiently.”

Chris Summers

Chris is running on a platform based on a vision he says can be summarised as “Our Voice. Our Community”. “This encapsulates my view that Council needs to listen to ratepayers and deliver services that are accountable, transparent and meet community and ratepayer expectations,” he says. Chris believes there are many small groups of concerned ratepayers that are passionate about issues impacting the environment, job creation, business development, tourism and quality lifestyle. “I believe Councillors are uniquely placed, embedded as they are in their local communities, to bring forward ideas, concerns and issues that may be impacting their local community,” said Chris. “I am passionate about supporting tourism, primary producers, small business owners and the entertainment and arts industries here in the Scenic Rim and believe that Council is well placed to facilitate and support these industries to grow in the Scenic Rim,” he said. Chris was born in Broken Hill and left school in Year 10 to take up a motor mechanic apprenticeship. After several years working as a mechanic he returned to school, completed Year 12 and went to University where he completed several undergraduate and postgraduate degrees. “I worked as a Guidance Officer for over 20 years with Education Queensland and retired in 2019. I believe that with the right leadership team at the helm of Council, acting on behalf of the community, we can make a difference, now and for future generations,” he said.

Janine Healy

Up

Local artist and former swimming champion, Janine Healy, has announced her independent candidacy for Division 3. Janine is well known for her no-nonsense approach and ability to bring people together to create better outcomes. “I am a hard worker, familiar with working long hours and I am driven to achieve results when faced with a difficult issue,” said Janine. “The Scenic Rim is home for me” she said, “I spent all my formative years here and I want to give back to the community who helped shape who I am today. I’m excited to be back and in a position to make a positive contribution to the community I love.” Janine says her passion for the region means she will deliver results as well as strong and effective representation. As a member of many local community groups, she loves working and spending time with those who share her enthusiasm and pride for the area. “I understand a single vote in the Council chamber is not going to deliver promises, but if elected in March, I will devote my time and energy into listening and being available,” she said. “It’s time for a significant shift to allow the next generation to build on the good work the incumbent has done,” Janine said, “I’m offering a fresh face and a fresh approach in Council”. Canungra AH&I Society presents a cheque to Canungra Muay Thai

Backing Our Fighters

Canungra Muay Thai Club has been overwhelmed by the support of the local community, with businesses and community organisations generously assisting four fighters and an Australian Coach to travel to the World Titles in Thailand. Unfortunately, due to the outbreak of the coronavirus (Covid-2019), the World Title event has been postponed for safety reasons, however Club representative Kellie Clift said the money raised will be held by the Club to ensure the fighters can attend the World Titles once they are rescheduled. “We are very grateful for the support we have received by our community,” said Kellie, “We have raised and had donated enough money to pay for David and the four fighters’ airfares. Of course we are devastated that the event has been postponed but we hope everyone will understand and I can assure people that the money will be held by the Club to pay for airfares once a new date is set.” Significant donations were received from the Canungra AH&I Society, Australian Lawn Concepts, Canungra Sports and Recreation Association, Canungra Hotel, The Outpost Cafe and BP Canungra. Many businesses also gave raffle prizes: Go Ballooning, The Butchery Canungra, Canungra FoodWorks, Canungra Hub Cafe, Ginja Ninja Japanese Kitchen, 3intheMix Cakes, Katherine O’Brien Equine Photography, Canungra Takeaway. Other support came from The Canungra Times, Equipment Services Australia, Mountview Alpaca Farm, Canungra Dental and Corporate and Country Accounting. Kellie said Moriarty Park Community Sporting Centre also raised funds by holding Trivia and Bingo nights. Four fighters were selected from the Canungra Muay Thai Club to attend the world titles and David Torrens was selected as a coach for the Australian team.

Proposed Community Centre

After all the recent events affecting the area and considering the proposed population growth local resident Bel Ratcliffe and Canungra Op Shop Manager, Caroline Andrews, are seeking to gauge the interest level and invite community members input and expressions of interest in being members of a committee for a Canungra District Community Centre

What

would the

do?

Why

do we need one?

We have recently dealt with devastating bushfires, drought, and loss of water to the township and surrounds. We have a growing population of young families and youth will require activities to engage in. We have a growing population of Seniors who require assistance with accessing services and events to engage the community with. Family support services are only available in Nerang or Beenleigh which is a 30 minute travel distance. Emergency Relief has ceased in Beaudesert and relocated to Logan.

What

do we need to get started?

• 10 people willing to be on the committee. • A donation of $170 ( after we have a committee) to register as an incorporated entity • Your support, ideas, encouragement, cheers and anything else you think may benefit us.

How

will it be funded

We will be seeking government and other philanthropic funding as well as seeking to partner with established organizations that provide community services. We will also undertake fundraising activities and events. So if you are interested in getting involved, please email Bel Ratcliffe on bowerbird21@gmail.com or Caroline Andrews on info@canungraopshop.org.au

Op Shop Gives Ongoing Local Aid

Six months after the Canungra and Beechmont fires and following recent heavy rains, many are getting on with life as normal. At Canungra Op Shop however, there has been ongoing work to make sure those affected by last year’s fires are receiving the help they need. In November 2019, Canungra Op Shop was given approved charity status with Givit, an organisation that was publicised widely at the time of the bushfire crisis. Givit has a website where the public can offer items to donate directly to people in need, or where financial donations can be made. Since November, through the partnership with Givit the Op Shop helped approximately 15 families at Christmas time with food hampers donated by Chrisco, Coles food and gift cards, and specific items that were needed for families in Binna Burra. “Some people have questioned charities that accepted donations through the period immediately following the bush fires,” said Op Shop manager, Caroline Andrew. “I have been encouraged by how helpful the team at Givit have been in making funds available to help those with specific needs.” “I have kept in contact with Beaucare who had a staff member allocated to help give

Caroline Andrew with a Givit representative prior to Christmas.

support in Rathdowney, Tamborine Mountain, Canungra, and Beechmont until the end of January 2020.” “In the last few weeks a staff member from the Salvation Army has been in contact, keen to give support to any who need it now that Beaucare have no local presence,” she said. Caroline said some people are reluctant to ask for assistance, concerned that others may be more in need than themselves.

She also said some people were treated poorly by the authorities after the bushfires when their requests for assistance were rejected or their motives questioned. She encouraged anyone who needs help to contact her by visiting the Canungra Op Shop in Lawton Lane, visiting www.canungraopshop.org.au or sending a message via the Canungra Op Shop Facebook page.

From My Window

with Keer Moriarty, Editor Keyboard Warriors

I had a conversation the other day with someone whose online persona is quite different to what they are like in person. I find this confusing - which persona is the real one? The response was ‘well, we are all keyboard warriors, aren’t we?’. Yeah, no. I communicate a lot via social media and my voice on there is the same as it in person - at least I think it is (now waiting for a slew of Letters to the Editor saying that in person I’m nothing like I am online!). So what is it that makes us say things online that we would never say otherwise? Is it the anonymity? Is it the facelessness that allows us to overcome our shyness; or enables us to forget our manners and that we are speaking to other real people who can be hurt, damaged or uplifted by what we say? Traditionally, humans are tribal. We are not meant to live in isolation. We thrive on connection and we seek connection through social media. The danger is, without seeing or hearing the reaction of the people your are communicating with, you can cause real hurt or damage to others, without even realising it. The upside is that social media can be used to reach out, to uplift and help people - or to say things you are too shy to say in person. How you make others feel about themselves, says a lot about you. Think about it - and be kind.

Good morning, On a recent visit to the Canungra bookshop we picked up a copy of the February Canungra Times. We were encouraged to find an article by Di Ayscough with News from St Lukes. It was refreshing to discover a local publication that appreciates the continued need for the recognition of the church, its work and place in today’s world. Congratulations to Di and your editorial team for creating space in your publication for a viewpoint that is now ignored by the mass media. We will make sure we pick up a copy of your paper whenever we are in your lovely town. Tony and Maggie Webb, Sunnybank Hills

We have very kindly been offered this by Eve De Silva, an accredited Mental Health instructor who lives locally. The course runs for four weeks with each session being three hours. We would plan to run it possibly Monday or Tuesday evenings from 5.30pm to 9pm and ask attendees to bring a plate of shared food for each session. The cost is $20 for the required manual and you must be able to attend all sessions or make up the ones missed. If you are interested could you please email me on v.west12@ hotmail.com so the Committee can arrange this. Virginia West, Canungra LAC President

Grants for Primary Producers

Impacted farmers in the Scenic Rim can access to grants of up to $75,000 to assist with bushfire recovery, however this assistance comes a little late for some, announced more than five months after the devastating Beechmont/Canungra fires. Member for Scenic Rim, Jon Krause said he has fought for this cash assistance to be activated since November. “It was clear some of the farmers desperately needed help after fires,” said Jon, “It seems the Government spoke to almost nobody out here to find out about their losses – basically they failed to do their job and I make no apology for calling them out on that.” “I didn’t stop fighting for our region though and I thank all those farmers who told Scott (Buchholz) and I about their losses so we could make the case together,” he said. The grants are being provided through the jointly funded Commonwealth-State Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA) and are available to bushfireimpacted farmers in eleven local government areas. Federal Minister for Emergency Management David Littleproud said the grants would help impacted farmers get their businesses and livelihoods back on track. “These fires came on the back of prolonged drought and have been a devastating blow to farmers that have held on for so long,” he said. Queensland Minister for Agricultural Industry Development and Fisheries, Mark Furner, encouraged all impacted farmers in the activated regions to apply. For more information on the eligibility for primary producer grants contact the Queensland Rural and Industry Development Authority on 1800 623 946.

Ask the Physio - Cervicogenic Headaches

There are many causes of recurrent headaches. Three common types are: • Tension headaches • Migraines • Headaches secondary to a disorder in one of the top three or four joints in the neck. These neck-related headaches are commonly called ‘cervicogenic’ headaches. Cervicogenic headaches are usually felt on one side of your head and are always on the same side. Unlike migraine, neck headaches do not swap sides. They are of mild-tomoderate intensity and are always accompanied by some degree of neck pain. Most typically, the pain begins in your neck and then spreads to your head.

What

causes these

headaches?

Excessive strain caused by poor working postures (prolonged sitting and awkward neck postures) can irritate the upper joints of your neck and cause a headache. The joints can also be injured by trauma eg sports, horse riding or whiplash from a car accident. In the late middle-aged to older age groups, osteoarthritis of the upper neck

joints is another common cause of cervicogenic headaches.

How effective is Physiotherapy treatment

for

cervicogenic headaches?

There is an increasing body of evidence supporting the treatments offered by physiotherapists for the management of cervicogenic headaches, particularly manual therapy to the joints in the neck, combined with specific exercises. A comprehensive management program will include education, manual therapy, massage, Laser Therapy, exercise therapy and postural advice.

What

can

I

do to help

myself?

Self-management strategies are vital to help you look after your neck and to adopt best work and lifestyle habits as well as a simple exercise regime. Be aware of your neck postures, and try to avoid prolonged sitting and slouched postures. • Correct your posture at least twice an hour while in an upright position.

• Regularly sit upright and tall, and hold this posture for 10 seconds to relieve strain on your joints and muscles. • Move regularly. • Other exercises can be performed two to three times per week to ensure all of your postural muscles are working well and supporting your neck and the weight of your head. Your physiotherapist will help to devise an exercise program for you once the joints in your neck have been treated.

Mitsubishi Triton Test & Review

Reviewed by Lee McKenzie-McKinnon, Editor, carandbikenews.com.au The new look Mitsubishi Triton arrived in January 2019 and is a complete overhaul of the old model. Most Tritons are four-door, five-seat Double Cabs. However, Single Cabs are also offered. Sitting in between is the Club Cab model that has two folding seats in the rear of its stretched single cabin which is accessed via the small rear-hinged doors which open only if the front doors are open. All Double Cab Tritons are powered by a 2.4-litre four-cylinder turbo diesel engine. At 133kW and 430Nm outputs are still decent, though peak torque arrives at a highish (for a workhorse) 2500rpm, meaning there’s a moment of hesitation from the engine before it hits its stride. Fuel economy is decent with 9.6 litres per 100km in the automatic 4WD double-cabs we drove. It depends how you drive and if you are heading off road. The Tritons are never going to be race cars ... but they do drive and handle better than a few other makes. Being lighter helps and the direct steering does give more of a sporty feel, making it better to drive overall.

Mitsubishi Triton

Tritons are good off-road. A downside is the rear overhang which you need to be aware of when doing a climb or descent. The Triton GLX+, GLS and GLS Premium versions are equipped with a rear differential lock which makes them more capable in difficult going. Towing capacity at 3100kg is behind the pack with most utes laying claim to 3500kg capacities, though a payload of 900kg is on the money for high-spec dual-cabs. The Triton also claims a GCM of 5885kg, meaning it’s possible for the 2000kg kerb weight GLS to carry almost its entire payload and tow capacity legally. None of the updated Triton range feature built-in satellite navigation, instead relying

on a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility and pre-loaded with AM/FM/ DAB+ radio, Bluetooth connectivity, HDMI and USB inputs, and six-speaker audio. The Triton has lots of safety features with autonomous emergency braking, pedestrian detection and a Mitsubishi-developed system called Ultrasonic Misacceleration Mitigation, which can limit throttle inputs below 10km/h if sensors detect nearby objects. Price: GLX Double Cab Pick Up 4WD Auto - $38,490 (Check local dealers for pricing) GLS Premium 4WD Double Cab Pick Up Auto - $50,290 (check local dealers for pricing).

Canungra’s History - Wonglepong State School By Joyce Libke Wonglepong State School opened on 18th February 1884, as Caningera no 423. It operated in a 6.1m x 3.7m building erected by John Price and John Pindar. The furniture was made by Henry Franklin Snr from a hoop pine tree felled on his property ‘Sarah Vale’. The school closed on 29th September 1893 due to a lack of pupils, but reopened 20th September 1898, renamed as Caningera Lower no 836. In 1889 a school had opened in the settlement growing around Laheys’ sawmill approximately six kilometres upstream that was named Caningera Upper 566. By 1915 a proper school building was erected at Wonglepong and the old school turned into a teacher’s residence. The railway line was also built adjacent to the school and a photograph of the Station building has the name ‘Wangalpong’ on it. The school was then officially changed to Wangalpong no 826. On 06 February 1928, the railway station was changed to Wonglepong and the school followed, being then registered as Wonglepong School no 826 until it closed on 15th September 1935. The few remaining pupils were home taught with the help of correspondence school teachers until, in 1946, transport was organised to take the pupils to Canungra. Charlie Taylor’s Ford truck left Canungra, doing a circuit along Mundoolun Connection Road, west onto Beaudesert Nerang Road (Wonglepong Road) north

on Biddaddaba Road and south back along Mundoolun Connection Road to the school in Finch Road, Canungra. The original school building was moved to ‘Sarah Vale’ as a barn. The proper school was bought by Alf Finch and moved to Burleigh as a holiday house. A plaque was erected on the old school site in ‘Henry Franklin Family Park’ at Wonglepong in 1998, the inscription read: The Caningera School 1884 – 1914

This stone marks the exact location of the first school in the Canungra Valley. Department of Public Instruction Reg Caningera No. 424. Restaurant Review

Breakfast at Canungra Hub! By The Full-Bodied Foodie Everyone has reasons for going to certain establishments to eat. Admittedly, for the most part you go because you like the food, but in the case of Canungra Hub Cafe, I go there because the people are exceptional. Canungra Hub Cafe is owned and run by Paul and Shona Kraayvanger. Paul and Shona are long term locals who have been involved in the community for many years. Both of them were on the Canungra AH&I Society Committee for many years and Shona is now on the Pink Assist Committee. They also run the Canungra Newsagency for ten years and have maintained the personal, friendly service in the cafe. While their commitment to the community is definitely second to none, Paul and Shona’s commitment to healthy fresh food is just as strong. I went for breakfast on a busy weekend morning and all of the dishes we ordered - Omlette with chicken; a Morning Start and Eggs Benedict - were received in good time, delicious and of course served with a smile. The coffee was great and my friend ordered an iced chai of some description (far too exotic for me but she said it was great). There is a range of home made cakes available from the cabinet. These are made freshly by Paul, Shona and the staff and include some of the best scones you will ever taste! If you have special dietary requirements they have a range of vegetarian, vegan and gluten free meals and snacks - just ask the staff for details of any requirements you have. Regulars to Canungra Hub Cafe will be used to the exceptional service. The staff all know the customers by name and welcome everyone with a smile. It really feels more like coming home than going out. This is a rare thing in hospitality and the reason why I keep going back (in addition to the food). Canungra Hub Cafe is located at 32 Christie Street, Canungra and is open seven days a week for breakfast, lunch and a delicious range of home baked cakes and savoury snacks.

Canungra RSL Sub-Branch News War Animals Remembrance Day By Col Lee, President, Canungra RSL Sub Branch

A wet morning greeted those who attended this year’s War Animal Day at D J Smith Memorial Park on Monday 24th February 2020. The service went over well with Light Horsemen and their mounts, a magnificent Draught Horse and its handler and two RAAF Working Dogs and their handlers adding something special to the ceremony.

Cr Virginia West did the introduction and Cr Nadia O’Carroll, the War Animal Poem. The keynote address was delivered by Retired Queensland Mounted Police Sergeant Roy Mientjes, detailing the tremendous effort the War Animals gave to assist in winning the battles. The Commandant Land Warfare Centre, Kokoda Barracks, Colonel Arran Hassell, CSC laid the first wreath; followed by Col Lee, OAM; the two RAAF Working Dog Handlers and their Dogs; Crs West and O’Carroll; and Mr Peter McLachlan, the Light Horse and Veterinary Corps. Many thanks to Army Chaplain, Major James Pearce in delivering the Invocation, the Prayers of Remembrance and Peace and the Benediction. Overall, the commemoration was a very fitting ceremony to remember and honour our four and two footed animal offsiders. Alongside the thousands of War Animals who served, I would like to remember the 11 Australian Army Tracker Dogs who served in Vietnam but were not permitted, due to quarantine regulations, to return home: Cassius, Justin, Caesar, Marcus, Tiber, Janus, Julian, Milo, Trajan, Juno and Marcian.

Down jungle tracks, through shot and shell, ears pricked, keen sense of smell. Out tracker dogs with care and poise, alert to ambush, foreign noise. Never whimper, whine nor bark, their service honoured with this plaque. No medals pinned to hairy chest, they stayed behind, they were the best. Photos: Katherine O’Brien Photography.

Every child has dreams whilst they are growing up. Mine was to see the endangered bird species of Australia. One bird in particular that always stood out in my mind was the Norfolk Island Parakeet. A few weeks ago, my childhood dreams become a reality when I flew to Norfolk Island and encountered this beautiful bird. The Norfolk Island Parakeet is a bright green parrot with a red forehead and red patch behind the eye. Male and female birds are similar in appearance. The Norfolk Island Parakeet has similar relatives in New Zealand and New Caledonia. In the 1970’s, the numbers of the Norfolk Island Parakeet dropped drastically due to predation by cats, loss of eggs to rats and competition for nest sites with introduced Crimson Rosellas. A captive breeding program was established, cat and rat populations were reduced by trapping and nest boxes were provided to the birds. The birds’ population increased, however there were concerns that the birds were declining. Work to maintain the parrots’ population is ongoing and at this stage, it is estimated that there are about 200 birds. This parrot is only found on Norfolk Island and confined to the forests of Norfolk Island National Park with some migration into fringe areas. The best way to find these parrots is to know their call. I found the birds relatively easy to locate and being a typical island bird, they had no fear. My views of the birds were splendid and I was able to observe them feeding on the ground and on seeds of native palms. Usually, I only observed the birds in pairs or singly. Norfolk Island is home to other forest birds and different species of seabirds. Over the week that I was on Norfolk Island I was able to encounter all of the endemic bird species. It was a privilege to photograph most of these endemic species and many of the other bird species. For those interested in how to visit this stunning place, I will share that with you next month!

Native Holly - Alchornea ilicifolia EUPHORBIACEAE By Susan Cully

The scientific name some from Alchornea after Stanesby Alchorne 1727-1800, a collector of British plants; ilicifolia from Latin “ilex” the great scarlet (holly) or Holm oak, Quercus ilex, and “folium” leaf because of the holly-like leaves. Foliage colour is on show in the rainforests of the plateaus this month. The long dry period followed by a lot of rain has promoted an exceptional burst of new growth. This Native Holly is a common understory plant, often straggly and meagre. When it is growing on the edge of the forest, along roadsides, it thrives; producing this flush of new, pink growth. Strong sunlight intensifies the red new growth. This plant can Native Holly be found from the Illawarra regions north to the Daintree region. The leaves are alternate, stiff with raised prominent veins ending in pointed lobes, each with a rigid spine. Flowers are small and cream-green and are produced as separate female and male flowers in summer. The seed is inconspicuous and hard to find, as well as slow to germinate. New plants can be grown from cuttings. It is an attractive foliage plant, ideal for containers. It enjoys feeding and mulching, however the hard, shiny surface helps reduce moisture loss through transpiration, thus making it quite hardy and drought tolerant. This is one of the food plants for the Common Albatross butterfly, Appiae paulina ega. Plants in EUPHORBIACEAE are members of the SPURGE family, ecologically diverse, occupying most habitats and exhibiting nearly every growth form used by plants. Most are herbs, but some, especially in the tropics, are also shrubs or trees. Reference: http://www.saveourwaterwaysnow.com.au/ Nan and Hugh Nicholson Rainforest Plants VI.

Renting with Pets

Animal Welfare League Queensland has joined the Make Renting Fair in Queensland Alliance to urge the community to encourage a change in legislation that will make it easier for renters to keep their pets. A quarter of animals surrendered to Animal Welfare League Queensland (AWLQ) each year are due to accommodation issues including people not being able to find pet-friendly accommodation due to agents or landlords not allowing pets, moving and homelessness. Dr Joy Verrinder, AWLQ Strategic Director, said AWLQ shares the heartbreak and devastation when people surrender much loved dogs or cats because they cannot keep their pets. “Many people rely on their pets for companionship. It should be unlawful to discriminate against them just because they have a pet as part of their family.” Make Renting Fair in Queensland spokesperson, Penny Carr, said there were now more Queensland households renting than purchasing their own home. “We strongly encourage the government to push ahead with these improvements which will ban blanket pet exclusions by agents and put the onus on landlords to refuse pets. We commend the valuable work Animal Welfare League Queensland is doing to rehome abandoned animals,” Ms Carr said. “AWLQ strongly supports legislation and policies that enable people to keep companion animals, provided they are able to care for them responsibly to ensure the welfare of the animals and prevent nuisance to others,” Dr Verrinder said. Currently a landlord can refuse pets in their rental properties without providing any reasonable grounds. The Residential Tenancies Authority reports only about 10% of Queensland’s rental properties allow pets, yet 84% of families either have, or would like to have, a pet. “Renters with pets feel powerless in this situation. If they complain or question the landlord, they may lose their accommodation. If they move, it can be extremely difficult to find another place to live with their beloved pet,“ Dr Verrinder said. AWLQ and Make Renting Fair in Queensland support legislation which allows tenants to keep pets. A tenant would still be required to seek consent from a property owner. The property owner can only refuse with approval from the Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal (QCAT) based on a set of prescribed reasons. Similar legislation has already been passed in Victoria, the ACT as well as the NT. Landlords should seek information about the individual pet, and owners should demonstrate that they can care for the pet responsibly. To support the petition to encourage the Queensland Government to enact legislation to make it easier for renters to keep their pets, visit www.awlqld.com. au/rentingwithpets. Page 33

News from St Luke’s By Di Ayscough I am about to have cataract surgery on both eyes, in order to give me clearer vision. I did not realise I could not see or focus properly on what I was looking at until I had my eyes tested. Perhaps this is how many people see God and the Christian Church, through blurred vision. While some may not look at the church at all, others may find it difficult to see what Christianity is all about. Sometimes it takes a crisis, such as the recent bushfires and now floods, to help people to turn their focus towards the church. If you would like a little clarity about Christianity, Fr Ken, our locum priest, is excellent at opening our eyes to God’s word. As well, Bible Study on Tuesday nights (7.00pm) at St Luke’s is open to everyone to help investigate what life is all about. Monday afternoon’s children’s program sees an enthusiastic group of Canungra children learning about the values we need in life. St Luke’s is very supportive of the RI program which is available for years 1-6 students at Canungra State School. Such a program is designed to promote the spiritual development and wellbeing of young Australians and contributes to a holistic approach to education. You are invited to come along to St Luke’s on Saturday 14th March for our annual Car Boot Sale and Cake Stall. You will be able to enjoy Devonshire Teas, the Sausage Sizzle, buy a cake or fresh produce. Why not keep the morning free to find a bargain at one of the twenty plus stall holders that will be in attendance? There are still some sites available if you have your own goods to sell (phone 07 5533 7070). I look forward to seeing you there.

Moriarty Park News with Bren Dalby

Sportsperson

of the

January Sportsperson

Year

Congratulations to our Sportsperson of the Year, Jonah Parry and to all the monthly award recipients. The Awards night was a great success and thank you to everyone who helped. Page three of this edition has an article about the Awards and Jonah’s achievements. Thank you to Tony and Anne from Canungra Foodworks for sponsoring the Awards. Their ongoing support is greatly appreciated.

January Sportsperson

Our nomination for January Sportsperson of the Month came from Dempsey Nutley for his troop of young pre-season soccer players! Some hadn’t played before and all learned a great deal from the ten week course organised by Dempsey. They all put in super effort and have come out much fitter, able to dribble the ball, shoot for goal and very excited about starting the soccer season. Great work guys; we all look forward to seeing those new skills put to work.

Trivia Night

Our next trivia night is Saturday 21st March at 6pm for a 6.30pm kick off. Cost is $5 per person with maximum of six at a table. Raffle of course! Again a massive thank you to FoodWorks for supporting us with this fun night for all too.

Annual General Meeting

a long time with mowing when our mower died; your help has been wonderful and we are feeling the pain now you are no longer able to help! We have applied for a grant for a mower a couple of times and are hoping that the grant we are waiting to hear back about soon will bring that to fruition … otherwise look out for a lotta raffles to enable us to buy one! Several people have gone out of their way to get the fields playable - the Mansfield family have been amazing and Jason from J W Earthmoving spent a whole day on a ride-on last week to help us out. Aaron Silcock has done a lot of organising on many levels at the soccer club and has been great sorting stuff out. Morgan Ritter has been set to work on whipper snipper etc too. Many thanks to ALL who have helped!

Our AGM is on the third Monday in April at 7pm (unless someone comes along to hire the hall on a Monday night as Kirsty and her Karate have moved on to pastures new ... ie the School of Arts Hall).

Activities

At present we have Tae Kwon Do on Tuesday and Thursday evenings with Sarah Hall and Yoga with Margot on Monday mornings. Check out our website www.moriartypark.com.au for more information and hall hire.

Thank You

Mowing has been a nightmare of late but we wish to thank Garry and the Canungra Sports and Recreation Association (Showgrounds) Committee for helping us out for

FORE Your Information - Golf Club News With Kim Sami First and foremost is our massive thanks to our wonderful grounds staff and volunteers who have worked tirelessly to get the course back in shape for play after the deluge of rain. It is amazing how things can turn around in a couple of months. The course is looking spectacular. A special thanks to the Scenic Rim Regional Council for getting the access fixed so we could enter the course. We are very fortunate to have a great support network to ensure our members and guests continue to have opportunities to sink those putts!
