Morgan Swims in as Sportsperson of the Year

Canungra’s highest sporting honour, the FoodWorks Sportsperson of the Year 2018, went to the inspiring swimmer, Morgan Lee. Morgan is an amazing young lady who has taken the swimming world by storm. She in addition to training hard in her chosen sport, she also works at the Canungra Pool as a Lifeguard and Swimming Instructor and is about to commence a Bachelor of Clinical Exercise Physiology at Griffith University. The Awards Night was held on 8th February at Moriarty Park Hall. Moriarty Park Community Sporting Centre President, Bren Dalby, said it was a great night of recognising outstanding achievements across a variety of sports and age groups. The 2009 Sportsperson of the Year, Phil Hystek, presented the Awards. Phil is a renowned paraglider pilot and instructor, as well as a mountain cyclist. His 2008 Sportsperson title was gained primarily from his mountain cycling results, with several overseas races including in The Himalayas. More recently, as reported in The Canungra Times in September 2018, Phil has had considerable success at a mountain uncyclist. Phil is a high achiever in whatever he puts his mind to, however at the Awards night, after all the monthly nominations were read out, he turned and said: “I have never in my life felt like such an under achiever.” “It is indeed always mind blowing how many sensational and dedicated athletes we have in this area,” said Bren.

FoodWorks Sportsperson of the Year Morgan Lee, with some of the monthly Sportsperson Award Winners.

Bren thanked Tony and Anne from Canungra FoodWorks for sponsoring the Sportsperson Awards event in full, including all the food and drinks at the Awards Night as well as gift certificates for monthly winners. “We could not do this without the very generous support of FoodWorks,” said Bren. She also thanked Cr Virginia West for assisting in hosting the night and the people who submitted nominations during the year. She said Morgan continues to train very hard and is aiming for great results in the

Australian Age Championships in Adelaide later this year. “We wish Morgan and our dedicated athletes all the very best in their chosen codes and will continue to recognise them and follow their successes,” she said. Nominations for Sportsperson of the Year can be emailed to Bren at bren.dalby@ bigpond.com. A short story, approximately 150 words. outlining the achievements of the nominee, and a photograph to accompany the nomination would be appreciated.

On Monday 11th February , thirteen Scenic Rim SES Volunteers were deployed to North Queensland to assist with the massive clean-up following the Townsville Floods. The teams assisted in washing out and cleaning-up homes, chain sawing, roof repairs and community education tasks. They provided physical support on the ground and emotional support to affected communities. They offered relief to local emergency services and assisted in getting the city back onto its feet. These teams selflessly volunteer their time. They have families, work and other commitments, some have taken unpaid time off work, some using their own annual leave so they can assist in the clean-up. These people, along with all other emergency service personnel are doing amazing work and constantly inspiring those around them. To follow their journey like the Scenic Rim SES Facebook page. Get Involved in the Community Garden

The Canungra Village Garden is inviting locals to join the fun and get involved in the garden. The Garden is located at the back of Canungra State School and the C&K Kindergarten on Lamington National Park Road. It was established for local people to enjoy getting out in a community garden setting and learning about growing food. The Garden team is hoping there might be some people new to town who are keen to get involved. Alex Griffiths said there is a friendly core group of people who maintain the garden but they would welcome more volunteers. “Everything is flexible - days, times and activities,” said Alex, “We are open to your ideas and input! If you’re looking for a social and fun outdoor activity, or a not-for-profit volunteer role, this is for you also! Don’t be shy: we don’t bite!” For all enquiries contact Alex Griffiths on 0478 784 719 or message the Canungra Village Garden on their Facebok page.

Alpaca the Ring - A Unique Proposal

What could be more romantic than having Ed Sheeran involved in your marriage proposal? When Ben Crewe proposed to his girlfriend Veronica Hughes on Friday 1st February, it was a very fluffy Ed Sheeran who helped him out. Ben said the unique proposal idea came after hearing Veronica talk about how much she loves alpacas. She traveled for three months through South America in 2017 and fell in love with them. “I knew when I was going to propose to her that I simply had to incorporate them into the proposal somehow,” said Ben. Ben contacted Jen Pack of Mountview Alpaca Farm and began planning a romantic picnic and alpaca walk at O’Reilly’s Canungra Valley Vineyard. He asked Jen if there was a way she could have an alpaca carry the engagement ring. Jen chose Ed Sheeran as the ring bearer, his particularly docile temprament and friendly nature made him the ideal choice. Ben was nervous on the day but also excited about Veronica having the alpaca experience she had been looking forward to. “I knew she’d say yes because you just know when it’s right,” he said. “It was an amazing day with the alpacas and Jen and the whole crew were so lovely and helpful,” he said, “The food and wine was stunning and the weather held off for us so we didn’t end up getting rained on.” “Oh and of course, most importantly, she said yes!” said Ben. Veronica’s reaction was a first for the couple, and one that Ben was really moved by.

“Veronica is an incredibly strong and passionate person with great internal strength and a heart of gold,” said Ben. “I adore all of these amazing qualities and the person it makes her. However, with all of those amazing qualities, one I’d never experienced before was her crying due to tears of joy. Well, all of that changed on that day!” “She cried and cried and was simply overwhelmed by joy and happiness. It was wonderful to see that we were taking that

next step on spending our lives together was showing itself in such a beautiful way.” “An enormous thank you to Jen at the alpaca farm, she made it all come together. With her efforts and ‘Ed Sheeran’s’ performance on the day, we now have the most amazing memories to tell our children about. We can’t thank them both enough.” Mountview Alpaca Farm operates from O’Reilly’s Canungra Valley Vineyards seven days a week. For more information visit their web site www.mountviewfarm. com.au.

Canungra Rodeo Tickets for Locals

The 2018 Canungra Hotel Rodeo was so successful that organisers have had to reconsider their event strategy and limit numbers for the 2019 event. Canungra AH&I Society Marketing Manager, Lee McKenzie McKinnon said the Society is committeed to keeping the event affordable for local people but after unexpectedly selling out in 2018, they will have staggered pricing for the 2019 event, with all tickets sold online. “We were taken by surprise by the popularity of the event last year,” said Lee, “The number of people was overwhelming. We had only sold 1,000 tickets online by 9am on the morning of the Rodeo, but ended up with over 7,000 people through the gates - more than double our normal crowd.” “A lot of people had to be turned away at the gates when the grounds became too congested,” he said. The 2019 pricing will be $25 for adults and $55 for a family, but a special 20% off discount code, ‘LOCALS’ is available from 1st March to 30th April for local people to use. “The discount code is available for a limited number of tickets (until sold out) or

until 30th April. We want local people to take advantage of this so we are not advertising it anywhere except within Canungra,” said Lee. Aged pensioner and children’s tickets will remain the same price, however Lee urged everyone to purchase tickets online before the rodeo on 13th July 2019 to avoid missing out. All online tickets sales have a small booking fee added. “It is important to us as a community organisation that our events remain affordable, safe and enjoyable for local people,” said Lee, “We are looking forward to another great Rodeo this year!” The 2019 Canungra Hotel Rodeo is on Saturday 13th July 2019. To purchase tickets online go to www. ticketebo.com.au/canungrarodeo, select the tickets you require and press ‘Buy Now’. On the payment page click on the text “Do you have a Coupon Code?”. The coupon code box then appears. Enter the coupon code in the box ‘LOCALS’ and press APPLY COUPON (this is case sensitive so take take care when doing this). The website will then reduce the cost of the ticket by the

Botanic Gardens Under New Management

The Tamborine Mountain Botanic Gardens volunteers have formed a new association to undertake the management and financial control of the Gardens. The Gardens are a major tourist attraction on Tamborine Mountain as well as a haven for recreation and relaxation by residents. The management change was finalised during the Tamborine Mountain Garden Club February meeting following a vote by members of the Club and agreements with the Scenic Rim Regional Council. The Gardens will now be managed by the Tamborine Mountain Botanic Gardens Inc. The Tamborine Mountain Garden Club began development of the Gardens in 1983 and until now has managed the Gardens through a sub-committee. The Council has approved a new financial support agreement with the association, replacing an agreement that stood over the past decade with the Tamborine Mountain Garden Club. “The roles of the Garden Club and the Botanic Gardens have evolved over time,” said Tamborine Mountain Botanic Gardens spokesperson Roger Bell. “Both parties have agreed that effective management should be

in the hands of the volunteers who work tirelessly to maintain and continue to develop the 13-hecctare site. “The volunteers have worked over many years to build up multiple sources of funding. We are grateful for the ongoing support of the Scenic Rim Regional Council.” Scenic Rim Councillor Nigel Waistell said: “I am delighted that the future of these important gardens are secure.”

The Canungra Times - March 2019

The Gardens have been substantially supported for many years by funds from the annual Springtime On The Mountain Open Gardens Festival run by the Garden Club. “The volunteer group has known for some time that we could not continue to rely on the Council and the Garden Club alone,” said Mr Bell. “The cancellation of the Festival in 2018 brought funding into sharper focus for the volunteers.” Mr Bell said the Tamborine Mountain Botanic Gardens Inc committee will announce a range of new initiatives to further involve the entire Tamborine Mountain community in Gardens activities. “The Gardens are ranked as the most important not-for-profit destination on the Mountain and the second most important attraction overall,” said Mr Bell. “We plan to build on that success and further develop the Gardens to attract the widest possible community. The Gardens are a source of inspiration, education and relaxation for people across south-east Queensland and beyond. “The volunteers are excited about the future and our new focus.”

Zanzibar Styles It Up for Photo Shoot!

In most hairdressing salons the photos on the wall are posters of models, but Di Robson of Zanzibar likes to do things a little differently. In Di’s salon the photos on the wall are her clients, taken at an annual photo shoot she has held every year for the past 25 years. “It gives everyone in the salon the opportunity to talk about different things we would like to do with the models’ hair,” said Di. “It is also good for clients to see our own work on the walls and know that they are styles we can create for them,” she said. This year Di used models from 12 years of age to mid-thirties to showcase children’s cuts, men’s and ladies styling, and a permanent hair relaxer for very curly hair. Di and Lauren spent up to eight weeks prior to the photo shoot working with the models hair on colours and treatments. Di said it encourages both of them to think outside the square. “We are so excited to show our clients our latest collection,” said Di, “Pushing our boundaries makes us who we are as stylists and keeps our passion for hair alive. It enables us to deliver the latest styles, cuts and colours.” The Paul Brown Hawaii - Permanent Hair Relaxer was used on one of the models who has naturally tight curls, Heather Moriarty. This product contains a blend of 12 unique nourishing properties from island plants and minerals. It is designed to relax the curl

in naturally curly hair and reduce frizz, to make the hair more manageable. Heather said the results after the treatment were amazing. “My hair feels great,” she said, “I can really see and feel the difference and it is so much easier to manage.” The day started early with the first model arriving at the salon at 5.45am for hair and makeup, but Di and the team at Zanzibar made it a fun and relaxed day for everyone involved.

The Canungra Times - March 2019

In keeping with Di’s philosophy of supporting local business, the models were dressed in clothing from Holli Dolli. “Holli has been such a great help,” said Di, “Both she and her son modelled for us and the clothing from her shop was fantastic.” “I love doing this because it really builds peoples’ confidence,” she said, “It takes them out of their comfort zone by having the professional hair, makeup and photography done, but the result is that they have a great time and really enjoy it.”

From My Window

with Keer Moriarty, Editor

Welcoming Newcomers Over the past few months, there has been an influx of newcomers to our township and the surrounding area. Some of these people are defence force families who have moved here for work. Others have bought or rented in the newly established Canungra Rise estate. It can be exciting and daunting moving to a new place but Canungra is a very welcoming community and I hope everyone new to the area enjoys their time here. Next month I will be running a feature about living in our region - what you need to know, best places to eat, drink, have fun, visit. I would love some input from our readers, the Canungra community, about what you think are the essentials of living in Canungra. Are there things you wished you knew before you moved here? Or are there thing you wish people new to town were told before they moved? Is there a shop or destination you think is Canungra’s best kept secret? If you have any ideas look for our Facebook post, email news@canungratimes.com.au or give me a call on 0407 671 286. It will be great to help new people settle into the town and feel welcome. I hope you love living here as much as I have.

Thank you

The Canungra Uniting Church would like to thank the staff of Canungra & District Community BankÂŽ, and the citizens of Canungra for their generous donations of groceries prior to the festive season. Autumn Orchid and Foliage Show

The Beaudesert District Orchid and Foliage Society will hold its Autumn Show for Orchid and Foliage Plants on the weekend of 9th and 10th March 2019, in the Canungra School of Arts Hall at Pine Street, Canungra. The Society holds two shows per year, in March and September, which attract people from Northern New South Wales and across South-East Queensland. There will not only be many orchids in spectacular bloom, especially native orchids, but also ferns, begonias, bromeliads and aroids on display. There will also be orchids and foliage plants grown by local society members on sale at reasonable prices. Commercial growers will be selling orchids and other foliage plants while other trade tables will be selling orchid growing accessories not generally available to the hobby grower. There will be also a cake and craft stall run by a local organisation. The show runs from 8am to 3pm on the Saturday and from 9am to 2pm on the Sunday. A knowledgeable and experienced orchid grower will be speaking on “The Basics for Growing Orchids” at 9am and 11am on the Saturday and from 10.30am on the Sunday. Admission is $4 per person. Refreshments will be available and there is plenty of off-street parking at the Hall. For more information contact Peter Rice – Secretary - on 5543 2108 or visit Beaudesert District Orchid and Foliage Society on the web at www.bdofs.com.

Brian was an active member of the Canungra RSL Sub-Branch until he had to move closer to the Gold Coast University Hospital, after being diagnosed with serious health problems. He was a jovial man who had served in the Royal New Zealand Defence Forces as an Army Medic for more than 20 years. Brian’s family will be taking his ashes home to New Zealand to be scattered at his favourite camping site. Brian was a big believer in body organ donations and parts of his eyes were donated to permit an Australian in need to see once more. Well done Brian. Rest in peace.

Wreath Laying

Several people have asked if they could lay wreaths at the memorial at D J Smith Memorial Park, this coming ANZAC Day. Most certainly you can and in fact you are encouraged to do so. If you are laying a wreath on behalf of an organisation, then please let the Sub-Branch know so we can have you placed on the list for the wreath laying ceremony. Other attendees will be given ample opportunity to lay their floral tribute prior to the playing of “Last Post”. You can also lay a tribute on any day of the year between sunrise and sunset. Many local citizens and visitors to Canungra may have a family member or mates who were killed in action on a certain day and who rest in one of our War Cemeteries in other parts of Australia or overseas. For more information, please contact the SubBranch Secretary at: PO Box 9, Canungra QLD 4275

ANZAC Day 2019

I am looking forward to seeing you all at this year’s ANZAC Day Dawn and Mid-Morning Services. Also, if you are into military history, l encourage you to investigate the Battle of Kapyong which occurred in Korea on 24 April 1951. This battle is one of many involving Australian troops who fought in the Korean War or more commonly referred to as the “Forgotten War”.

SEQW19576BA

The Scenic Rim is among ten local government areas that stand to gain from a City Deal that would create generational change in South East Queensland, one of Australia’s fastest growing regions, through a focus on connectivity, liveability and employment. Released this week by the State Government and the Council of Mayors South East Queensland, the TransformingSEQ City Deal Proposition is a blueprint highlighting the need for all levels of government to work together to improve the productivity and competitiveness of a region which is home to one in every seven Australians. Scenic Rim Mayor Greg Christensen this week joined Brisbane Lord Mayor Graham Quirk and Queensland Deputy Premier Jackie Trad in Brisbane for the launch of the proposition. He then travelled to Canberra as part of a delegation which met with Federal Minister for Cities, Urban Infrastructure and Population Alan Tudge to discuss the proposal which, according to modelling by KPMG, could unlock $58 billion in economic growth for South East Queensland. “The announcements of this week represent an exciting opportunity for the

powerhouse for the future so that everyone has the jobs and lifestyle that go together in this great part of Queensland. “This is not a short-term fix. This is a program that will be inter-generational and lay out a plan that enables strong economic growth whilst ensuring we also protect the character and nature that makes our region great.” As the population of South East Queensland is predicted to grow beyond five million over the next 25 years, the challenges of accommodating that growth while maintaining liveability require long-term planning and investment. The Council of Mayors South East Queensland has been working with the State Government for the past five years to develop an understanding of the region’s needs which has contributed to a strong and coordinated proposition to the Federal Government to negotiate a City Deal. Aligned with the Australian Government’s Smart Cities Plan, City Deals represent a partnership between the three levels of government and the community to work towards a shared vision for productive and liveable cities by aligning planning, investment and governance. “This is the beginning of a process to ensure the needs of the region are met over the next 20 plus years,” Cr Christensen said. “It recognises that we can’t do everything at once but need to take a logical and sequential approach to deliver the best outcome for all. “The success of South East Queensland relies on the participation of all South East Queensland councils as we will all share the impact, the burden and the joys of population growth and economic growth on our lifestyle.” The TransformingSEQ proposition outlines six transformational opportunities for South East Queensland. Of particular relevance to the Scenic Rim are a trade and enterprise spine between Toowoomba and the trade coast, connecting Inland Rail to the Port of Brisbane to unlock new jobs in the south-west and western growth areas; innovation precincts which will incorporate agriculture and agribusiness technology; and upgrades to public transport which aim to make South East Queensland a 45-minute region by reducing commuter travel and congestion on roads. “All of us in the Council of Mayors are keen to move forward,” Cr Christensen said. “A common focus and joint leadership from all levels of government will serve our communities best in delivering a strong sustainable future for South East Queensland.”

Autumn Equinox celebrated at Blue House

The Autum Equinox will be celebrated at a special market event on 23rd March 2019 from 1pm to 4pm at The Blue House on Appel Street, Canungra. Organisers Nicole Krause and Susan McDonald said the Market is specifically for small home-based busineses who may not have had a market stall before. “We really want it to be a supportive environment for first time stall holders,” said Nicole, “We have especially invited businesses in the wellness and health industry, as well as jewellery and craft.” Susan said the Autumn Equinox represents a very special time of year. “Autumn Equinox is a time of equal day and night, the balance of light and dark,” said Susan, “A time we have the chance to invite and give thanks for balance into our lives, for harmony. We also have the opportunity to let go.” “As we move deeper into the coming winter, there is the opportunity to see and enjoy our own personal harvests, the fruits of our labours so to speak, literally and metaphorically,” she said. “So depending on how you feel about letting go, coming down from the highs of

‘Flu

Season

is

Upon

Us

Again

By David Christensen Canungra Valley Medical Practice Seasonal influenza, also known as the flu, is a contagious respiratory illness. To help reduce your chances of getting influenza there are several things you can do. Have the influenza injection: It is important to get the influenza injection each year to continue to be protected, flu strains (types) also change over time. Good hygiene is one of the best ways to help prevent colds and flu from spreading. • Wash hands regularly; • Cover your mouth and nose when coughing; • Put used tissues in the bin; • If you can, don’t share food utensils, cups and plates before washing them; • Wipe down benches etc, to keep clean. Clean surfaces such as your keyboard, telephone and door handles regularly to get rid of germs. In most cases you can treat mild cold and flu like symptoms at home. If you have signs and symptoms of influenza please, if possible, take time away from the workplace and social gatherings to avoid spreading.

Page 24

Antibiotics do not reduce symptoms of colds and flu as these illnesses are caused by viruses. Antibiotics only work for bacterial infections.

What

are the

Symptoms?

The symptoms of influenza range from mild to severe, and in severe cases can lead to death. The following are common symptoms: • Fever and chills; • Cough, sore throat and runny or stuffy nose;

The Canungra Times - March 2019

• Muscle aches, joint pains , headaches and fatigue (feeling very tired); • Nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea (more common in children than adults). It is important to seek immediate medical advice if the illness quickly becomes worse or if any of the following symptoms occurs: • Shortness of breath or rapid breathing; • Chest pain; • Confusion or sudden dizziness; • Persistent vomiting.

Some Surprising Facts About Posture

Your posture is one of the first things other people notice about you and can affect so much more in your life than just spinal health. Healthy posture has been linked to an improvement in your respiratory health, self-confidence and overall physical strength. Ideal posture doesn’t mean having a straight back. Many people think having good posture means standing as straight as possible with your shoulders pulled back. This is actually a relatively unnatural posture and requires a lot of energy to maintain. Ideal posture, where the spine rests in it’s most comfortable and strongest position, is where your neck has a gentle curve backwards, the thoracic is curved gently forwards and the lower back curves back again. These curves create an elongated ‘S’ shape and can be seen when viewing a person from side on. Your foot posture is also extremely important as your biomechanics are set at your feet determining your knee, hip and spinal positions. Once you have set ideal foot, leg and spinal positions, your ‘core’ muscles should then give strength to all of your movements. Postural variations are accompanied by typical patterns of joint and muscle stiffness that can lead to pain and injury. Your physiotherapist is able to assess your posture and identify ways this may be contributing to your pain. You will then be taught strategies to improve the way you stand and move.

MOTORING -

Review by Lee McKenzie-McKinnon, Editor, carandbikenews.com.au

When I think Toyota, I think HiLux or LandCruiser and how tough, strong and reliable they have shown to be. What I don’t think about is the Prius. However, it is a car that shouldn’t be over looked. Often given plenty of stick by motoring journalists, the Prius is more thought of as a taxi over a family car. Although they do get used a lot as taxis, that really should say something as to how reliable they are. The Prius came to the world over 20 years ago and has been growing stronger with each upgrade. The fourth-generation and current model Prius hit Australia in 2016 and offers substantially improved efficiency and driveability. It has a larger 1.8-litre petrol engine, uses less fuel, the electric motors are smaller, lighter and more efficient and the hybrid battery is lighter and smaller. The result of these upgrades is that the combined fuel cycle has improved. Toyota claims it to be just 3.4 litres/100km however I only got to 4.4 litres/100km with a lot of highway driving. Not bad indeed. The current model Prius is the first car to benefit from the Toyota New Global

Toyota Prius Test & Review

Architecture philosophy that delivers cutting-edge dimensions. With this, the exterior design is much more futuristic and stylish and gives a better visual impact. Toyota doesn’t hide the fact that the Prius has a triangular profile and this has become somewhat of a model icon. The low-swooping bonnet and split rear tailgate glass broken up by a tidy looking spoiler offsets the long droopy tail lights that modernise the look. The cabin size is comfortable and works well for five people. There is a seven-inch touch screen and quality details including

soft-touch materials and striking white inserts. Every Prius is fitted with seven airbags, reversing camera, vehicle stability and traction control, anti-skid brakes, emergency brake signal, hill-start assist and smart entry and start. Safety systems now standard across the range involve four technologies: precollision system, active cruise control, lane departure alert and auto high beam.

Canungra’s History - The Springs Let Go By Joyce Libke “1929 was also a very dry. The creek was reduced to a trickle about 4 inches [10 cm] wide. One day I was getting water from the creek in a 60 gallon [270 litre] tank on the slide. My youngest brother, Colin, was with me and he was trying to dam this four inches with stones when a wall of water about six inches [15 cm] came down and in five minutes the creek was 12 feet [3.6 metres] wide and running strongly. This was caused by a peculiar phenomenon. After a long drought the springs in the National Park break out to start the creek running again. This always heralds the end of the drought. In this case, there was an abundance of rain within a fortnight.” Ernest Caswell, Wonglepong, 1984 In the late 1990’s, the Canungra Creek actually stopped running for 100 metres above the pump station and water was being trucked in to keep the heavily restricted town water supply going. There was a little rain over a few days but no runoff. On “Glen Witheren” I was woken about 4.30am by an odd noise -- not rain on the roof, nor wind in the trees. When I got up at 6am I was astounded to see that the rapids area on the creek that had been dry for some time was now a sheet of water flowing strongly. I realised the noise that woke me earlier was the creek “coming down” ie atmospheric pressure had advised the springs in Lamington National Park that it was OK to let their water go as there was good rain coming. As the front had passed “Glen Witheren” at 4.30am I made no attempt to let anyone down the creek know. Later I found out that the front did not reach the showground crossing until about 9am. It had taken four and a half hours to fill all the dry water course [6kms] back to a normal level. It was well documented at this point with cameras and videos taking the water as it came towards the gathered people. It then took until 3pm [another six hours] to get to the Benobble Bridge. Once again the rain came and the creek flowed as normal. A few years later, when again it was a dry period with the creek just flowing, I heard an odd noise during the day. I looked at the creek to see that it was no longer just flowing but was again a sheet of water flowing strongly over the rapids. When Des came up from slashing the flat he could say he heard “the creek come down’ over the noise of the tractor. Page 28

Canungra Creek during the 2002-03 drought. Photo by Joyce Libke.

There may have been similar occurrences I am not aware of - but after each of these there was drought breaking rain.

Big Floods are Another Story

1953 - a 16 inches [330mm] cloud burst [ie storm that drops ALL its water in one place instead of giving lots a areas a share] at the top of the Coomera river and Canungra Creek created havoc especially in the Coomera valley where much damage was done. 1947 - during a very wet season damage was done to the creek banks of many streams that begin in Lamington National Park. 1989 - during a very wet period extra rain in the National Park resulted in houses that were allowed to be built too close to the actual creek were inundated. Water going a metre deep through one house. 2008 - again a wet season with the creek running a banker, having been in our new house two weeks, I was woken at 1.20am. On looking out the window I saw that the water was just below the house, ie in major flood. We could hear the ‘boys’ next door [on the edge of the creek bed] calling [he-elp]. Des went over and joined the army [armed with torches] and others including the SES. By this time the water was rapidly receding but their bridge had been partly washed away [up stream by the original push when the main flood swished to the west side of the creek hitting the cliff face and pushing the gullies back up stream.]. The Canungra Times - March 2019

An SES boat was sent for [I was sure it would get stuck in the mud that covered every thing]. By this time the water had returned to the gullies and Des walked across our pipes to watch the boat being launched in the gully and the boys coming down from the roof for the five metre ride to the other side. Once the water went down they could have walked out through our place. The water part of this drama took about 30 minutes. Although our place had been well flooded [where we knew it would when we bought the land in 1983] the garden got a good top dressing and no damage was done. 2011 - another big wet with the National Park having a week of heavy rain and then 12 inches in a day which put a four metre wall of water on the top of a moderate flood that came down very quickly - so quickly in fact that no one upstream had time to warn those down stream to get their water pumps out off the creek bank. 2017 - again a very wet season and the creek steadily came up and peaked about 10.30am at the same height as the 2008 flood. We were entertained by a small ‘motor boat’ [platypus] that paddled madly upstream in the gully area and then went down stream even faster over the lawn on the other side. Again it did not peak for long and Des was able to check the garden. With more heavy rain later into the night it again peaked a foot higher about 11.30pm ie the water went through the boys house twice in the same day.

NEW WATER TREATMENT PLANT IN CANUNGRA

It was a pleasure to visit the new treatment plant following the upgrade of the 50-year-old plant which had come to the end of its useful days. This new stateof-the-art plant is able to produce 1.5 million litres of treated drinking water each day, which is almost four times the capacity of the old plant. Water supply is not only to the town of Canungra but also for trucks which deliver to Wonglepong, Witheren and Tamborine Mountain. Filling of the trucks is now more efficient and enables increased deliveries to these areas.

MORIARTY PARK SPORTSPERSON OF THE YEAR

Congratulations to Morgan Lee who is this years Sportsperson of the Year for her achievements in swimming. Congratulations to all the monthly nominees from last year; you have all excelled in such a diverse range of sports and have made Canungra proud. Moriarty Park is desperately in need of some more committee members and volunteers to assist with functions such as the Sportsperson of the Year event. They are a fun committee currently small and feeling the pressure. Bren who has been on the committee for many years and has been a very hardworking and committed President and Secretary for a good part of that time is taking a break for a few months to rejuvenate. Alesia Clarke McCabe has kindly stepped in for this period of time. This is a very rewarding committee to be part of and “many hands make light work.” If you would like to be involved please contact Alesia on 0402 167 966.

MEMORY CAFE OPENS IN BEAUDESERT

The first Memory Café, for those who suffer from dementia and their carers, opened in Beaudesert a few weeks ago. This is an initiative of Centacare and is held once a month at the cafe in The Centre, Brisbane Street, Beaudesert. For further details and times, contact Centacare on 1300 236 822. Attendance at the opening was amazing and the atmosphere was one of assistance and understanding.

GOVERNMENT FUNDING FOR SARABAH RD

The Queensland Government recently committed $84,000 for a section of Sarabah Road to provide greater resilience and to safeguard existing infrastructure following heavy rain events. The proposed works will see the existing causeway extended to allow flood water to flow more freely, reduce erosion and ensure the road is reopened sooner following flood events.

CLEAN UP AUSTRALIA DAY 3RD MARCH

I am again coordinating volunteers who may wish to spend only an hour picking up rubbish around Moriarty Park, Canungra Creek bank and the surrounding streets as part of this national event. In the past it has been a fun morning, no longer than an hour and we meet at Moriarty Park at 8am Sunday 3rd March. All the bags and gloves are supplied. I look forward to seeing you all.

These forms are also available from the Queensland Health website. In 2019, all Year 7 students will be offered two free doses of Human Papillomavirus (HPV) and one free dose of Diphtheria, Tetanus and Pertussis (whooping cough) in line with the National Immunisation Program Schedule. All Year 10 students will be offered one free dose of the vaccine against the Meningococcal A,C,W and Y strains as recommended by the National Immunisation Schedule. If you have concerns about any immunisations, your doctor will be happy to discuss this further with you.

Turning Canungra Pink was started by a local resident in 2011, herself a Breast Cancer Survivor. Since then it has become a month long event, decorating the town in pink for awareness and raising money throughout businesses and community events all run by volunteers. Its a great effort for a small town! Funds raised are then donated both to Cancer Council Queensland and to “PINK ASSIST” which is a fund created by The Canungra Chamber of Commerce and used to provide support directly to our local families dealing with ongoing Cancer treatment (chemotherapy or radiation). PINK ASSIST offers vouchers to assist local patients with purchases such as pharmaceuticals, fuel, house cleaning, lawn mowing, basic mechanical expenses plus some other individual needs that may arise whilst undergoing treatment including hospital parking fees. Contact one of your local committee members to see if you or someone you know might be eligible for this assistance.

Australian Humpback Dolphin (Sousa sahulensis) By Melissa Whitby

Sex - Male. Colour - White/Tan Age - 4 years, 5 months 3 weeks Size - Medium Price - $315.00 An absolute sweetheart of a boy, Rex is affectionate and quiet. He is looking for a home where he will get out for a daily walk to stretch those legs of his and be allowed to live inside as a close member of his new family. He has basic obedience and is very well behaved, he’s just an all round good boy! He likes the company of other calm dogs and wouldn’t mind sharing his new home with a friend, just be sure to bring the whole family along! Rex cannot wait to meet you. Rex is desexed, vaccinated, wormed and microchipped and has had a health check by the AWL.

Over the years I have encountered many unique Australian wildlife species. Most of these creatures are land animals. However, there is incredible wildlife that also inhabits our freshwater and marine environments. One species, which has always fascinated me, is the Australian Humpback Dolphin. The Australian Humpback Dolphin was once known as the Indo-Pacific Humpback Dolphin but was recognised as a separate species in 2014. Similar species to the Australian Humpback Dolphin is the Common Bottlenose Dolphin and Indo-Pacific Bottlenose Dolphin. The features which distinguish the Australian Humpback Dolphin from Bottlenose Dolphin species, are their very pale grey, mottled colouring and short, angular dorsal fin. Australian Humpback Dolphins live in coastal waters, which extend from Northern New South Wales through to Western Australia. The best places to see Australian Humpback Dolphins in southern Queensland is Moreton Bay and Tin Can Bay. They can be readily observed in estuaries and tidal channels. Usually, when these mammals are observed, they are seen moving in small groups of no more than five individuals. This dolphin species will predominately eat fish. Compared to their Bottlenose Dolphin counterparts, the numbers of Australian Humpback Dolphins is declining. Accidental deaths in large nets and other fishing equipment, coastal developments which cause poor water quality and noise pollution and unauthorised feeding all have negative impacts on the population of Australian Humpback Dolphins. If one does have the pleasure of observing an Australian Humpback Dolphin, please observe from a distance and do not feed or touch the animal. Such beautiful creatures should remain wild and not dependent on humans.

TRAINING AREA/RANGE NOISE NOTICE RENTAL PROPERTIES

RENTALS WANTED APPROVED TENANTS WAITING

Residents to areas surrounding the Canungra Field Training Area are warned that it is a Defence live firing range and to expect periods of heightened noise volume. Defence training includes firing practices with live ammunition, explosives, simulation devices and lasers that generally occur daily between 0700h – 1600h. Night time practices also occur and are generally completed before 2200h. During these core operating hours, residents in the surrounding areas may experience louder than normal noise levels. This could be due to a change in weather conditions or wind direction, or due to the type of munitions or simulation devices being employed to achieve a training outcome.

2/1 Lawton Lane, Canungra

Defence now has the capability to notify residents of increased periods of noise volume on the training area via an SMS alert. These alerts are intended to advise residents of an increased level of forecasted training area noise over a prescribed period of time. If you wish to be included in this notification process, please contact range control on (07) 5618 6270 and provide your name and mobile number.

Ph: 07 5543 4889

For any other enquiries regarding the Canungra Field Training Area, please contact the Canungra Field Training Area, Range Control Officer on (07) 5618 6270.

Hosted wonderfully by Stu McGoo, our trivia night on Feb 16th was a huge success with almost a full house and a lot of fun had by all. A total of $346 was raised for Wildcare /Currumbin Wildlife Hospital which is a record for our standard trivia evenings. Hopefully everyone will return for our next trivia night on Friday 22nd March at 6 pm. Cost is $5 per person with a maximum of 6 at a table. BYO nibblies and drinks. Please support the raffle we always run tickets $3 each, two for $5 or a tempting five for $10! Any donations of raffle prizes always appreciated. Jonah Parry competing in the World Championships in New Zealand

January Sportsperon Jonah Parry

Jonah ended 2018 and started 2019 in fine form, in beautiful Manly, New Zealand. He competed in the 2019 O´pen BIC World Championships! The O’Pen Bics are a growing fleet hosting some of the best Regattas in the world with some of the most competitive fleet racing and the only class to introduce fun events such as the “freestyle.” The 2019 O´pen BIC World Championships had 133 participants, including 69 U17’s. Jonah, just turned 13, was one of the youngest and lightest sailors in the U17s. The first two days he sailed the Manly Open, the lead up to the World Championships. Favourable winds and light weight were just what he needed. He came third in one race, beating the current World Champion and came 19th overall, achieving his top 20 goal.

The World Championship regatta had stronger conditions which favoured the heavier sailors. On the final day when it was gusting up to 29 knots, he finished 20th which is an outstanding effort in those conditions. This also moved him up the ladder to a final 33rd! Even though his first World Championship is over, this is only just the beginning. Jonah is again training with the SYC Performance team under the guidance of Matt Belcher, three times World Champion and current Olympic Champion in the 470 class. Jonah’s next majour regatta will be the 2019 Australian O’pen Bic Championship, which will be held in Airlie Beach over the Easter break. In the meantime, he also competes in the SYC Sprints Series and Champ Series and is currently leading. Go Jonah!

FORE Your Information - Golf Club News With Kim Sami An Introduction to Golf for Beginners is being run as part of the Scenic Rim Be Healthy & Active campaign. We will kick start this program on Wednesday 27th February at 9am at the Canungra Area Golf Club. This is a great opportunity to come out and give golf a go – as well as have some fun and enjoy a cuppa afterwards. Please contact either Gael (0487 665 689) or Kim (0417 775 741) to book your spot. It was great to see the ladies back out on the course in February. There were some new faces amongst the regulars which is lovely to see. Our shed and course renovations are coming along very well, almost to the point of completion and we can’t wait!!! Some of the Canungra Golfers went abroad to compete in the North Stradbroke Island VW Scramble. A great day was had by all with outstanding hospitality from the host club. Team 1 from Canungra came home with second place and some lovely big umbrellas. Memberships are available, social groups and individuals are welcome. Call the Club for details on 5543 4620.
