KAI ON THE FAST TRACK

Canungra’s Kai Crothers has been awarded Queensland’s Coles Athletics Community Hero for 2021. Kai, who was born with Cerebral Palsy, has taken Australia’s frame running scene by storm after taking up the sport just five months ago. His 100m run at the Australian Track and Field Championships in Sydney earned him a silver medal and his time was recently recognised by Athletics Australia as a new Australian record for his classification. The grade six Varsity College student had limited opportunities to participate in sport until he discovered frame running in January 2021. With frame running likely to be contested at the 2024 Paris Paralympics, Kai is on the fast track to higher honours. “It’s been hard to find a sport that I could feel included but ever since I took up frame running I’ve felt really included and it’s a sport that I can do and meet other peo-

ple with all abilities,” he said. “All my friends and family have been really supportive.” Kai was introduced to frame running by “Now I Can Run” founder and coach Amy Tobin. Now I Can Run is a Queensland based charity helping children with disabilities to access racing wheelchairs and frames as well as to participate in events. Kai entered his first race in January with the goal of not coming last, but a win ignited his passion for the sport. Since then, Kai has done every race made available to him – including appearances at the Queensland State Championships and Australian Track and Field Championships. Kai, whose favourite athlete is Kurt Fearnley said, “One day I hope to go to the Paralympics.” But for now, Kai’s focus is on training and improving his times with Amy’s frame running squad at Griffith University on the Gold Coast. The 12-year-old took

HUMANS of CANUNGRA

Jan Armstrong

By Keer Moriarty Photography by Katherine O’Brien Photography

The word resilience is thrown around a lot these days and seldom does it apply so well as it does to Jan Armstrong. This vibrant, amazing woman has a life philosophy of giving to others - it is part of her being and a strong part of her faith. A relative newcomer to Canungra, Jan has contributed strongly to the community since moving here in 2016.

Where would you say you are from? The place where I’ve lived the most is Redcliffe. I taught at Humpybong State School, right on the beach for 17 or 18 years. I taught every grade ... I didn’t have Prep there but I taught from Year One to Year Seven there. I was in Learning Support working with children who needed help with their reading and math. Not necessarily children with disabilities? No, we had a Special Ed Unit as well. These were children who just needed a bit of extra help. Some of them had dyslexia, which I was not qualified to diagnose. Anyone who was new to the school I ran tests to see which Grade they could go into and whether they would need help. How did you end up in Canungra? Well, in 2016 ... to cut it short ... in 2016 I had all of my teeth taken

out, they were all falling out. Was that because of an underlying health condition, or because of poor teeth? I don’t know. They were just falling out, cracking and breaking. So I had all of my teeth taken out. My husband was diagnosed with lung cancer and passed away the same November. I had to leave this job that I loved. I had to sell and leave my house and my cat and dog and my husband who was a very clever man and ran a business from home in computing and that sort of thing... What was your husband’s name? Wayne, but he was called Joe by the family. He said to me one day, I need to take you aside and show you how the solar and everything works. Being a computer fellow he had solar on the roof that came on at certain times that switched computers on to make

things run. I said, if you think when you pass away I’m going to stay in this house you’re crazy. He said what will you do? I said I’d sell up and buy a little house down by the beach where I can live with the dog and cat. I don’t care if I have computers and TV. I’m happy with a book and walking on the beach and I’d be fine. I think in his wisdom he thought ‘she doesn’t know what she’s talking about’ and he set about setting it up that we would move down here. It was always his dream to live in the country and to live on a block of land. Emma kept saying she was planting trees and doing things for us to move and I’d say “tell her we’re not doing it, tell her we’re not moving”. Jan and Joe moved to their daughter Emma’s property near Canungra. Her daughter’s mar-

Jan Armstrong riage broke down in the year after she moved. We moved here on the Saturday and Joe passed away on the Monday. It was not a happy year, 2016. That was a fairly traumatic time. You really had your whole world turned upside down within 12 months. That’s very tough ... how did you keep going? Everything ... a lot of my life disappeared. Emma and the kids were still here so that was something. It sounds ... is trite the word I want? But I have such a strong faith and you can take away everything, but that’s still there. And my Joe had such a strong faith.

He very much believed that he knew where he was going when he died. I wake up every morning and say “you gave me another gorgeous day, God, what can I do?” I don’t always manage it, but that’s what I try to do. Jan still uses her skills and passion for teaching children through Little Lukie’s - a Children’s Ministry program by St Luke’s Anglican Church in Canungra. After Joe died and things changed, I started going to St Luke’s and they have got God at the centre. We are all on a faith journey - I love St Luke’s.

Guardrails to Come Down TMR Action Follows Months of Lobbying

Sections of guardrail, or “rubrail”, on Beaudesert-Nerang Road at Witheren and Clagiraba will be removed following seven months of community lobbying about wildlife crossing. Transport and Main Roads (TMR) South Coast Regional Director Paul Noonan said removing sections of the guardrail underrun would enable wildlife to cross the road and access Coomera River. “We have worked extensively with engineering and road safety professionals to balance the need for guardrail to protect motorists and providing safe access for wildlife in the area,” Mr Noonan said.

“A lot of analysis has been done to solve this problem, and I’m pleased to say we have a solution.” Mr Noonan said TMR had been analysing data from the Department of Environment and Science, City of Gold Coast and Scenic Rim Regional Council since September 2020. “We’ve listened to the community and know we are coming up to koala breeding season starting so the works will start in late July, conditions permitting,” he said. “The local community has been advocating for this and I would like to thank everyone who provided feedback and local data to enable us to work

together to resolve the issue.” Wildlife carer, Bren Dalby, said she is delighted that TMR will go ahead with the work but is disappointed it has taken so long. She believed a Facebook video footage of a koala and baby trying to get over the guardrail was a catalyst for TMR to announce a start date. “Why did we have to have so much death? Why have so many of our wildlife had to die waiting for this to happen?” she asked. Wildlife carers in the area have reported an average of three deaths per week on the stretch of road containing the rub rail.

Wildlife carers Bren Dalby, Gary Robertson and Tara Hunter are pleased with the TMR announcement.

Shrikesh and Pharmacist Greg Vlasich are looking forward to expanding the range of medications, services and products available at the pharmacy. “Infinity Group own pharmacies at Browns Plains and Priceline in Beaudesert, so we will be able to share products and staffing across the stores when required,” said Shrikesh. “This means better service and shorter wait

NO TICKETS LEFT

Rodeo Buckles Up for a Sell-Out Crowd

It you don’t have tickets for the Canungra Hotel Rodeo by now, you’ve left your run too late. The popular local event sold out in record time, with all tickets sold online a month before the rodeo runs on 10 July. Canungra AH&I Society Secretary, Sharon Rafferty, said the Committee made a decision earlier in the year to limit the numbers to ensure they comply with COVID restrictions and to maximise the enjoyment and safety of the crowd. “Unfortunately this meant that some people have missed out,” said Sharon. “However it ensures that we will put on a

quality, full point rodeo that will attract riders from around South East Queensland and beyond (depending on border restrictions).” Sharon said the Marketing Team have been inundated with requests for additional tickets but they are not able to release further numbers due to social distancing regulations. “This is a unique opportunity for people to enjoy a boutique event in Canungra. It has been a huge event in the past and we have made every effort this year to regulate the crowd numbers so we can hold the event but be compliant with Queensland Health regulations.”

Canungra Show Secretary, Sharon Rafferty said the Committee decided to bring the Show back to the Showground this year to create a more intimate atmosphere. The Fine Arts, which for the past few years have been displayed at Moriarty Park Hall, have been moved back to the Showground. “The number of classes and quality of events is the same,” said Sharon. “We have a great horse program as always and we are looking forward to bringing some entertainment to the town that people won’t see elsewhere.” The horse program includes showjumping and the popular Arabian and Fresian classes.

A range of junior classes are also listed in the program, with Canungra an ideal show for junior riders to start their showing careers. For those who prefer to keep their feet on the ground, the Pavilion features cooking, craft and art sections for all ages with everything from Lego to Anzac Biscuits and painting. Lucky Win for Jo !! By Bren Dalby Never have we to our knowledge had one person win all four meat trays on a Sunday lunch time at Canungra Hotel but such was the luck of Jo Windle on Sunday 20th June! Jo is a regular supporter of the meat tray raffles, which are held every Sunday at 12 at the pub as a fundraiser for Canungra Owls Soccer Club, and has her chosen numbers (not to be revealed here

in case of a big rush next week!). The funds raised from the meat trays are hugely appreciated by the Soccer Club; many thanks to Canungra Hotel for allowing us to benefit from these. However it wasn’t just Jo who had her luck in great supply that day, as two of those meat trays were generously donated back by Jo in order to be raffled again and raise more money for the Owls. Again, hugely appreci-

ated – thank you JO! It is actually quite extraordinary how often, and I really mean nearly every week, somebody wins at least two of the four trays, and occasionally three but I have never witnessed all four! Also, a testament to the generous community spirit here, very often the ‘extra’ trays are donated back. Hope Jo bought a big lottery ticket this week and sends a postcard from Barbados!

Scenic Rim Received Over $1 million in Bushfire Recovery Funding WItheGre Did

Following the September 2019 bushfires, Scenic Rim Regional Council, along with many other LGAs after a nightmare bushfire season, received significant Federal Government funding to assist with recovery. While life quickly returned to normal for some people, there are many who are still in varying stages of recovery. Most of the Beechmont residents who lost their homes have not yet returned, and many Sarabah residents are still battling ongoing effects of the bushfires. A spokesperson for the Queensland Government said Scenic Rim Regional Council received a $1.275 million payment from the Australian Government under the LGA Program. This funding stretched across a number of areas, including: • SRRC Bushfire Resilience Officer employed for two years -

$178,000 plus $30,000 for community education resources. • Upgrade of small halls to allow them to be used for places of refuge or evacuation centres - $245,000. • Small business mentoring programs - $80,000. • Water access points for non potable water for disaster and roads - $415,000. One Beechmont resident said Timbarra Drive (where 11 homes were lost) is still a mess. “Hazardous trees which were to be removed are still needing to be cleared away, logs are left where they were pushed,” she said. “I haven’t seen anyone official come and physically look at this street since September 2019.”

$80,000 for Dinner One of the most controversial funding decisions was the allo-

The Decade of Delicious event was organised by Scenic Rim Regional Council and held on 19 June on Beechmont. The event featured a ten course menu

created by eight Scenic Rim regional food ambassador chefs, a performance by Rick Price, who flew in from Nashville to perform. Tickets for the event were $195 per person. Scenic Rim Regional Council was approached to comment on this article but did not respond.

COVID Vaccine Available in Canungra

COVID vaccinations are now available in Canungra at Canungra Valley Medical. Dr Garth Kline urged all members of the community over the age of 60 years to book in for their vaccination. “Everyone should get vaccinated,” he said. “Over 60s regular patients can ring the centre and book in for the vaccination. The receptionists will inform the clients of the procedures.” At present, vaccination clinics are available at the doctor’s surgery on Mondays and Fridays between 10am and 11am, however this will be extended if the demand is there. Initially, Canungra received 400 AstraZeneca doses and they have been ordering more each week

since the first patient received their vaccination on 22 June. Dr Kline said patients who come in for the AstraZeneca vaccination will first go through a review with a doctor before going to the nurse to receive the vaccination. Following the vaccination, the patient is required to wait in the surgery for at least 15 minutes to ensure there is no immediate reaction. Anyone who has had a flu vaccination must wait at least one week before having the AstraZeneca vaccination. Two doses of AstraZeneca are required before patients are considered to be immunised. These must be given at least four weeks apart, preferably 12 weeks

apart. Following advice from the Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (ATAGI) recommending that anyone under 60 receive the Pfizer vaccine, patients in that age group are advised to check online for Pfizer vaccination locations throughout Queensland, until it is available in Canungra. Queensland Health currently has more than 60 Pfizer vaccination locations operating across the state, with more sites set to come online in the coming weeks and months. Canungra Valley Medical is open seven days. To make an appointment or for enquiries, call 5543 5688.

Junior Landcare Grant Miss Walker and Prep W have been successful with their application for a 2021 Woolworths Junior Landcare Grant for a Native and sensory garden and a Bee Bonus for the prep garden. Canungra State School is one of 1,609 primary schools and early learning centres throughout Australia receiving a Woolworths Junior Landcare grant to help grow the next generation of environmental champions.

Playgroup Canungra State School has been running a playgroup for families in the community with children aged 0-5. It is run with the support of Playgroup Queensland and their Play Steps program, an early years play-based learning program where parents or carers and their children can play and learn together, while becoming familiar with the school environment. Some of the benefits of a playgroup include: • improved child development, especially social and emotional skills. • increased parent/carer awareness of, and engagement with, their children’s development. • providing a platform to help grow parental capabilities. • emphasis on the importance of learning through play.

A Focus on Learning Walls

At Canungra State School we are all learners. This year teachers have been focusing their learning on ways to make learning more visible to students in the classroom through he use of learning walls and bump it up walls. These learning walls make it clear to students what they are learning and what they need to do to be successful in their learning. Bump it up walls show students how to ‘bump up’ their quality of their writing.

Start Dancing with the Stars!

Canungra School of Arts Hall is buzzing with Ballroom and Latin Dance classes every Monday night. Robert and Elizabeth Street say the decision to start classes in Canungra was an easy one, despite a rocky road moving from Victoria during COVID after closing their Melbourne Dance Studio. Elizabeth started competing in Ballroom and Latin American when she was nine years old. She won multiple Junior and Juvenile Australian Championships, turning professional at the age of sixteen. Shewon several State titles and was runner up in the Australian Championships on more than one occasion. Robert started dancing at the age of sixteen, to appease his mother after failing a maths exam

after already repeating a year of school. So rugby league was out and dancing was in. After turning professional in 1986 he opened Charisma Dance Centre in Gatton. In 1990 a dancing partnership broke up and he drove to his teacher on the Gold Coast to tell her that he would retire from competing. She begged him not to retire as a top dancer from Melbourne who had been retired for seven years wanted to make a comeback. Her name was Elizabeth Green. Their first meeting did not go well and Robert said he only rang Elizabeth back and agreed to dance with her because he felt he had hurt her feelings. The couple competed successfully, married and established Charisma

Resilient Community Workshops

Scenic Rim Regional Council, together with the Australian Red Cross is providing a series of Disaster Resilient Community Workshops in various towns across the region. It was Beechmont’s turn recently to learn more about this important initiative with Australian Red Cross support worker Antoine Chandonnet. It was held at the Headmaster’s Café with local community members in attendance who were all involved with practical support and initial recovery during the 2019/2020 bush fire tragedy. Council is also providing a free Mental Health First Aider program across the region, with a two-day workshop for Beechmont to be held in August at the Beechmont Old School site. The workshop is designed to provide community members who wish to become Mental Health First Aiders with skills and understandings to support

friends, family members, colleagues and others in times of natural disasters. Key learnings cover: • Improving knowledge of mental illnesses, treatments and first aid actions. • Increasing confidence in providing first aid. • Decreasing stigmatising attitudes. • Increasing the support provided to others. • Recognising common mental health problems. • Providing initial help using a practical, evidence-based Action Plan. • Seeking appropriate professional help. • Responding in a crisis situation. This is a 12-hour educational course, not a therapy or support group. If interested, please contact Michelle Holweg on 0438 631 764 or 5540 5622 or michelle.h@scenicrim.qld.gov.au to secure a place in the course.

Every first Monday of the month a group of enthusiastic volunteers gather at Beechmont Pioneer Reserve, near Beechmont State School, to spend a couple of hours weeding, planting trees and learning about the native plants that used to populate the now rolling green fields of the plateau. Beechmont Pioneer Reserve has been converted from disused dairy pasture to a flourishing new native ecosystem that hugs Back Creek, the major waterway crossing the plateau. Hundreds of bird species have now been spotted in this new reserve, providing precious habitat for sometimes endangered species. Beechmont District Landcare Association has been going longer than most can remember. Its role has shifted from servicing the needs of primarily farmers to that of a burgeoning com-

munity of residents who choose to live in the area to enjoy the peace, quiet and closeness to the spectacular environment. There is a growing need in Beechmont for information about the unique and diverse environment. BDLA caters for that by having many different forums for education. The working bee is just one of them, along with workshops, Facebook posts and an increasing number of Fact Sheets explaining different species. Recently all Upper Beechmont residents received in their mailboxes Beechmont Weeds – a guide to identification, a summary of the most common weed species to be found on the plateau. A project funded by the Scenic Rim Regional Council and supported by a Federal Government Grant, the book will help residents interpret this bewildering but fascinating environment.

Canungra’s History No doubt a lot of our readers are bemoaning the fact that the Goat Track, though open to the bottom set of traffic lights (for local traffic) is unable to be used from there to get onto Tamborine Mountain at the southern end. The major “cliff works” done on the upper rocks some years ago are holding well the present problem is in the area where solid rock has given way to rocks, soil and vegetation combined. The area above the lights is unstable and with the latest land/rock slide is now even more so. When Laheys’ mill was a going concern in Canungra (1884 – 1938) the company often assisted in the development of

nicRim #OneSce

roads to give them access to the ‘pine’, especially on the mountains. The “Goat Track” began as a walking track, giving the Lahey family access to cooler summer camps on south Tamborine Mountain. When the firm who had been engaged to build the road was unable to continue with the job, Lahey Bros, as they had done several times before, completed it in 1919. However, the original plan to follow the western shelf and to reach the top at the Show Grounds was scrapped, and the road between the lights of today was blasted/ hewn from the solid rock. Romeo Lahey, the surveyor of most of the roads in and out of Ca-

the shelf and up to the Tamborine Mountain Show Grounds thus giving reliable access to the Mountain from the south. Remember that this road has always been

locally known as the “Goat Track”. Looking back to 1950/60s when it was just a narrow dirt track it appeared so dangerous that all drivers were cautious with very few accidents occurring.

The Canungra Times – July 2021

Budget Discussions At the time of submitting this column the 2021/2022 budget discussions are almost complete and by the time you read this newspaper the deliberations will have been released to the community. Budget time is always very challenging as council juggle the legislative responsibilities of maintaining and replacing aged infrastructure and the expectations of a rapidly growing community. Revenue sources are limited with a very modest Financial Assistance Grant from the Federal Government, available grant funding from various sources and of course rates.

Men’s Shed It was a pleasure to attend the inaugural Canungra Men’s Shed barbecue recently to celebrate and congratulate the hard working and committed local men who have got this organisation up and running in such a short time. Col Ford is to be especially congratulated for hosting the initial meeting and getting a very committed and productive team alongside him. New members are very welcome and the contact phone number is 0428 820 349.

Community Disaster Volunteer Training It has been wonderful to have such a positive response to this offer of training for community members to become Community Disaster Volunteers within their community. The training project is being conducted by Michelle who has been appointed as Resilience Project Officer for the Scenic Rim and funded under Queensland Reconstruction Authority grant funding in conjunction with Australian Red Cross. Canungra and Beechmont had a great response as have most other communities and I thank those residents who are giving up their evenings to attend the training. The Canungra Times – July 2021

Agricultural Skills Development Program Council has received some Drought Recovery funding to assist and support farmers who may have particular skills but no formal qualification to operate off farm or may require a ticket to drive a heavy vehicle, bobcat or forklift or other such machinery. This program is designed to support and add extra benefits to farmers and producers who may need to seek off farm employment at times and not have to put their farm in jeopardy. The service provider is DGT Employment and Training and can be contacted on email amanda. anderson@dgt.org.au.

Beechmont Footpath Project Thank you to the residents who spoke recently to the Works Team regarding this long awaited footpath which is being funded through grant funding and has now been re-sited to a safer route off busy Beechmont Rd through the estate and to access at the back of Graceleigh Park alongside Beechmont State School.

Beechmont Regeneration Projects As part of the Regeneration recovery journey at Beechmont a number of spectacular murals are appearing, the latest two at Rosins Lookout on the public toilet block exterior wall and the Beechmont Landcare Shed, both on Beechmont Rd. They are certainly worth a look and what talent is evident in this community.

Update On Rub Bars On Beaudesert Nerang Rd Department of Transport and Main Roads has announced the review of the lower rub bar rail on the section of road through the gorge towards Nerang is now complete and in the coming months it will be removed in a number of sections to allow native wildlife to safely cross

the road towards the river. We are advised the work will commence in late July weather and contractor conditions permitting. This has been a lengthy process and once again I thank the community members who have championed this project - Bren, Gary and Tara and the wider Canungra community

who have so passionately supported this safety measure to protect our local native animals. As koala breeding season has commenced we need to ensure that no fatalities occur prior to the project work completion so some possible signage solutions are being investigated.

CONTACT ME I am always available to residents by telephone on 5540 5111 or 0407 630 052 or by email virginia.w@scenicrim.qld.gov.au I am available at Canungra Library on Saturday 10 July from 9am till 11am - yes, it is Canungra Rodeo Day.

COUNCIL WATCH WITH AMANDA HAY

Email: frangipani1956@msn.com The following are my views, not those of the Editor. Any threats of legal action can be directed to me.

Bouquet Good to see Scenic Rim Regional Council taking action via the issue of a Show Cause notice which has resulted in the lodgement of OPW21/001 for retrospective approval of extensive unauthorised vegetation clearing, the cost of which was estimated at $20K by the applicant. Whilst this took place at a property at Tamborine and the notice was as a result of complaints lodged with Council and a subsequent site visit conducted on 14 August

Page 26

2020, similar clearing occurs across the Scenic Rim. Application for extension of time approved 21 June 2021. I wonder if a fine was imposed? The clearing took place over an area of 65,000m2. I assume a development application for subdivision is imminent.

Brickbat: “Have Your Say” Community Consultation – Draft Adventure and Nature-based Tourism Strategy. Given that the word “accommodation” appeared in the draft 22

times, I think it is safe to assume that the push is for more tourist accommodation thinly disguised as “adventure” driven – even backpacker accommodation was mentioned. Let’s hope this only occurs in areas where casual employment (farm work, fruit picking etc) and public transport are available. The Draft fails to differentiate between the different, unique areas within the Scenic Rim, again adopting a one size fits all approach. For those who had the experience of attending the Evergreen Festival on Tamborine Mountain on 19 June 2021, it is clear that whilst a great initiative, the execution was lacking – too many tourists for the venue, parking and toilet facilities to accommodate, plus the location on the only road to the rubbish

tip was rather unfortunate. Soon the Mountain will have to erect “FULL” signage rather than encourage more and more tourists and inappropriate tourism development. Significantly, at page 24 of the Draft, under 8 Monitoring Framework, it is stated that “there is no guarantee of future industry growth as numerous market dynamics are beyond the control of the Scenic Rim Regional Council and individual operators in the region.” Perhaps all the more reason to focus on promoting awareness of existing offerings rather than flooding an untested local market?

Development Applications The only Canungra development application approved recently was for a shed in Monarch

Drive “as constructed”: CAR21/038. RAL21/026 – 150 Lamington National Park Road, Canungra. Subdivision: 1 lot into 2 (6,11m2 and 13,900m2). Lodged 21 June 2021. MCU21/058 – 5 Roxborough Street, Canungra. Stage 5A Canungra Rise. Pending information request from council 17 June 2021. MCU20/133 – 7-39 Finch Road Canungra. “Over 50s lifestyle village”. No movement on this one since public submissions closed.

Court Cases Involving SRRC: No new cases filed since 19 May 2021. 518/21 - Beaudesert Pig and Calf Saleyards heritage listing appeal (SRRC -v- Qld Heritage Council); hearing has been set down for three days in Sept 2021 – dates are to be advised.

OUR ECONOMY IS ON TRACK TO COME BACK

Australia’s economy is on track to come back. In fact, our economy outperformed all major advanced economies in 2020. In the second half of 2020, it grew at the fastest pace on record and there are now more people in work than before the pandemic.

CONTINUING OUR COMEBACK To build upon the progress we’ve made, the next steps in the plan provide more support for individuals, families and businesses to help secure the economy and create more jobs.

JOB CREATION IS ON TRACK Over the next 10 years, many more local jobs will be created and secured through investment in roads, rail and community infrastructure.

We’re improving employment services so that employers and job seekers are more easily matched.

There’ll be new apprenticeships, traineeships and more places in higher education. And there’ll be more opportunities for families to access work with more affordable childcare.

LOWER TAXES & GREATER SUPPORT FOR MORE AUSTRALIANS

And our $1.2 billion investment in digital infrastructure, skills, and incentives means that More homes will be built in more communities thanks to HomeBuilder and the New Home Guarantee. more businesses in communities right across Australia can be part of the thriving digital economy. More training will be available through JobTrainer.

SMALL BUSINESSES ARE ON TRACK We’re supporting hard hit industries such as aviation, tourism and international education. And continuing tax incentives, such as the Instant Asset Write-off, to encourage businesses to invest, to grow and to create more jobs.

Tax cuts for 10 million low and middle income earners will put more money in their pockets to spend at local businesses, creating more economic activity and more jobs. It’s a plan that will not only help Australia come back, but come back better than ever.

TULLAMORE FARM There are so many things to like about fresh home grown Pawpaw. We have a great crop of red pawpaws here at present and have been harvesting them for a few weeks now and look like we will have a bumper crop for months to come. We have them producing here well within 2 years of planting, so they really are a quick feel good for many looking to be more self-sustainable. Pawpaws have a productive lifespan of only 6 or 7 years. We plant them between much longer life span trees that will eventually crowd them out knowing that suits the shorter life span of the Pawpaw. We fertilize our Pawpaws twice a year with our compost plus

some Gypsum and a little Potash. Pawpaws are a little unusual in their flowering and fruiting Biology. With that in mind I prefer not to grow from seeds as I want the majority planted to produce fruit. They are not expensive to buy as small trees, labelled and ready to go and your local nursery can help. They like their water but don’t like an area where the water will sit. With lots of wildlife and lots of possums here we pick the fruit as soon as they get enough yellow to ripen inside the home. Wrapping in newspaper can help the ripening process. For a minimal outlay they are super productive. We struggled for the

first few years to get the results we now have. Our biggest issue has always been black spot. Black spot is a fungal disease that is recognised by small black spots on the leaves and the fruit. It is always worst during the cooler months and after wet periods. As long as it is kept in check it will not be a major problem. Once a month between April and October we remove the infected leaves (don’t compost them) and we spray the leaves (9 litre mix) with a water solution, mixed with 2 tablespoons of wettable sulphur. We also add about a teaspoon of Epsom salts around the base of the tree. They like their Magnesium.

Platypus

Ornithorhychus anatinus

By Susan Cully Located at Canungra’s Lions Park, this beautiful rock etching cum sculpture, represents the artist’s feelings for our wildlife. Silvio Apponyi from South Australia names the art work: “Platypus 2008” and writes that it is a block of quartzite from the land of the Mununjali people of Beaudesert, and that he ... wanted to capture an enduring symbol of this ancient landscape. He chose our Platypus, still to be seen in our best waterways. Steve Van Dyck, retired curator of Q Museum, writes about the Platypus ‘Living, as it does, on our very doorstep, it is easy to forget how totally anomalous and immeasurably precious the Platypus is. It comes to us virtually unchanged from five million years ago. Its fur is so dense and insulating that the animal can forage for hours in tropical or near-freezing waters and emerge essentially dry. It detects prey with electro-sensitive receptors in its bill. It can also dig a 30 metre burrow, lay eggs and produce milk for its young. At a time when the value of freshwater has never before been so carefully considered, heaven forbid that we underrate our responsibility to conserve a biological treasure like the platypus, which is so dependent on the same resource’ (p 364 Wildlife of Greater Brisbane, Queensland Museum).

BACK AND NECK PAIN By Alison Ford

Platypus 2008 sculpture at Lions Park, Canungra. Adding that ‘Syd’ the Platypus was chosen as a mascot for the 2000 Olympics because he was ‘focused, dynamic, enthusiastic and captured the vigour and energy of Australia and its people.’ Additional qualities deemed less worthy of promotion were ‘Syd’s manifest dependency on cool liquids, his capacity to cram his gut nightly with 30 percent of his body weight, and his proclivity to stab anyone who cramped his style’. Caring for water quality in rivers and creeks can be achieved with less dumping, less extraction and preserving native vegetation in riparian zones.

So what happens when back or neck pain starts somewhere and we don’t know what caused it? Maybe we just ‘woke up with a stiff neck’. Maybe by the end of the day we get sore but are OK if we rest. Maybe if we sit for longer than 30 minutes we have a back pain. Maybe we just can’t exercise anymore ‘cos it hurts’ but we don’t know why. All of these issues indicate something is not right. This is where a Physiotherapy assessment is called for. So why treat the symptoms? Something has caused it so why not address the cause and fix the cause? In our process of assessment we will ascertain where your restrictions are and what is causing them. We will watch you move, check out your larger muscle groups for imbalances and check your joints for restrictions. We will see how well aligned your body is during different movement patterns. We will then adNeck and back alignment. vise the best way forward for you according to evidence based practices. That may initially be treatment in the traditional sense or it may be with exercise to help re-align, strengthen and address your alignment issues.

PET OF THE MONTH

Keep Warm with a Cat this Winter One of the best ways to keep warm this winter is with a cat! The AWL has adult cats and kittens available for adoption at their Gold Coast Rehoming Centre at Coombabah. How nice would it be to have a little furry lap warmer keeping you warm as you sit inside on these cold winter

nights or snuggled up in bed, keeping you company! Pets are a life long commitment of course, but someone like one year old Smokey would be a great addition to your home. Smokey is $180 and is microchipped, vaccinated, desexed, wormed and has had a health check.

NATURE’S GEMS Pink-eared Duck

Malacorhynchus membranaceus

By Melissa Whitby One of the most beautiful duck species that can be observed in South-east Queensland is the Pinkeared Duck. No other duck species can be mistaken for the Pink-eared Duck. Diagnostic features which set the Pink-eared Duck apart is their heavily barred neck and breast, pink ear ‘spot’ and square-shaped bill. Usually, these ducks are seen in small or large groups in the company of other waterfowl. Pairs of Pink-eared Ducks have a distinctive way of feeding by circling each other and feeding on what is disturbed by this process. This species likes to perch on logs and artificial structures wherever

they are present. The call of the Pink-eared Duck is truly unique and cannot be mistaken for another duck species. The distribution of Pink-eared Ducks spans much of Australia with only rare sightings in Tasmania. They are commonly seen inland in western Queensland. Pink-eared Ducks will utilise a variety of wetland habitats including man-made dams and sewage ponds. The best place to see Pink-eared Ducks in South-east Queensland is in the Lockyer valley around Gatton especially in the winter months and these sightings have been at man-made water

supplies. For anyone starting out learning to identify waterbirds in Australia, the Pink-eared Duck is a great species to start with. As mentioned previously, there is no other waterbird species, which looks similar to them. I saw my first Pink-eared Ducks, 20 years ago when I was travelling in western Queensland. After all these years, I still enjoy observing and photographing them when the opportunity arises. One cannot truly appreciate them, until you have observed them from close quarters. I am sure that any birdwatcher who has seen this species would surely agree with me!

Smokey will keep you warm during winter. AWL Gold Coast Rehoming Centre:

The Canungra Times – July 2021

News from St Luke’s By Di Ayscough

Do you ever wonder what inspires people to do things? I started thinking about the word inspiration and looked for a definition. The dictionary tells me the meaning is to “uplift the mind in spirit”. The famous poet, William Wordsworth wrote many poems because he was inspired by the beauty of nature. Perhaps his most famous poem is “Daffodils” where he speaks of gazing on the beauty of thousands of daffodils fluttering in the breeze. What inspires you? I am inspired by the beautiful winter weather we are having, by the vibrant colours of flowers in my garden, by the kindness and generosity of people, by the willingness of others to help in times of need. I am inspired when I see or hear about young people doing great things. What drives people to be inspired to reach for their goals? I believe much of our inspiration goes back to the definition “to uplift the mind in spirit”. The Bible tells us of many situations where crowds of people were inspired by what Jesus did. He healed people who had suffered illness or were crippled or debilitated in some way. This healing was often simply by Jesus touching and speaking to them. These sufferers were inspired by his touch and his words. Do you need to be healed in some way or do you feel you can help someone, somehow? Remember if you are inspired to do something you are not on your own. You can gain strength and inspiration by being a caring person and by asking God through prayer for help and direction to achieve what you desire. Each week those who gather at St Luke’s have their own inspirations but for our congregation inspiration is to believe in the word of God and act as his faithful followers. Plans are underway for our annual dinner to be held on the 27th August. This could be a starting point for your inspirations.

Supporting Community!

Local Biz Priority

We’re just like you!

We do our best not to promote out of town businesses that are competing with local businesses.

We are a local small business just like you. We live here, we are raising a family and we are committed to the region.

Ask us how we can help you to promote your event or community organisation.

We know small business is tough, and advertising can sometimes be expensive. We keep our prices affordable because we would rather see you get a return on your investment over the long term than sell you an ad one time.

We would rather advertise a local business wherever possible to ensure we deliver on our promise of helping the local economy.

Our advertisers are our friends and neighbours and we have a vested interest in helping you succeed.

We want to reward community groups that work hard to promote themselves, their events and their programs.

THAT’S HOW WE SUPPORT YOU. You can support us by taking an ad in our paper so we can continue to do what we have been doing - building a community focussed paper. Page 42

Moriarty Park News We are in possession of a new fridge, matching the new soccer fridge obtained from funding from a Scenic Rim Regional Council grant; ours was funded by a grant from NAB and great thanks to them as we have struggled for a long time now the hall is much more utilised, with an old fridge that tended to freeze everything! Huxford Refrigeration kindly gave us a bigger fridge than our grant funding and delivered for free and we can’t thank them enough. Great people to work with and very supportive of community groups who are trying hard to really come to the assistance in many ways to locals, and indeed all who wish to book a function/ class here at Moriarty Park.

Eat Local Week We will have a chance to test it at Eat Local Week which has turned out to be a much different event than we had hoped … at going to press we are hoping the weather holds out so we can again use the fields which were somewhat damaged at

the previous Food Truck event. Update in the next Times! Whatever is made from this event by Moriarty Park will also go to the Skate Park project.

cantly more than we had at first hoped. SRRC let us rearrange partially some funding for our much needed mower and we are tremendously appreciative. They didn’t have to … and it would have been a major headache for us should they not have ‘come to the party’ and it is testament to the great relationship we have with Council on many levels. Here we must mention Bendigo Bank who have taken on to pay the affiliation fees with Tennis Australia which was a pre-requisite of having the system installed, on-going. We would have possibly had to can the project had they not agreed to help us out with this and so massive thanks again to the Bendigo Bank.

Finally up and running, and with massive thanks to SRRC who helped us out with two lots of grant funding for the Book A Court Tennis System project, which as it turned out, partially due to COVID and delays associated, cost signifi-

For many years we have forwarded letters to SRRC to have an extra street light installed at the junction of Coburg Road and Monarch Drive and just today I had a call from Council to say they had forwarded our application but that bud-

get most likely wouldn’t stretch to that. Poor fella caught me having had little sleep due to koala / kangaroo and Bandicoot issues during the night for me and got the response: “Oh I understand that sadly nothing will happen til somebody dies”. Unfair as he has no authority to pass this but it is terribly frustrating that, due to the terrific amount of vehicular and foot traffic around that area particularly on dusk and dawn that nothing can be done … by somebody! There have been several ‘near misses’ that I know about and undoubtedly many more I don’t know about so I would like perhaps to hear other’s thoughts – bren.dalby@bigpond.com. I was told that originally an engineer’s report would have been done, and of course it would have – many years ago when the population, development (and I am sure he at the time wouldn’t have imagined for a minute that the Regal Rise thing would ever have been approved) and traf-

With Bren Dalby fic was way less … oh and he wouldn’t I don’t suppose have lived here and had to walk/drive ever on that junction. Anyway, another bee in my bonnet but no disrespect to Council as I know they can’t just make things happen but I personally feel we as a community may need to have a think about this issue. Might just be me? Anyhoo, glad for any thoughts.

Bingo Bingo night on 18th was a fun night! Thanks to all who came and of course to FoodWorks for providing all the prizes. July and August are busy with rodeo, show etc but we will try to slot in another trivia after the June one, maybe end July – watch out on Facebook and FoodWorks notice board please. Moriarty Park meetings are generally (worth checking though as trauma season is upon me and I am very often called out to wildlife dramas) on the third Monday of the month at 6.45pm and all are more than welcome.

SPORT Canungra Owls Soccer Club News By Bren Dalby Well we have had a very exciting win in our camp this month with our ever persistent and hard working Under 15 team having a magic WIN … their first in …well let’s just say a very long time! They battle on every game (they have no ‘regular’ goalie so have to rotate through that position which is not ideal…those who are not ‘goalies’ are not for a reason, and that’s mostly that they don’t want to be a goalie!) and never lose heart: “ah well maybe next time” kind of wonderful attitude. We are all behind them to get a few more under their belt! Come along and get home crowd support behind them when they play on a Friday evening please. Have your Friday night take away night at the soccer canteen! More good news for us as a Club: we were asked to help out with some goal posts etc for the filming nearby of 13 LIVES, a film about the young soccer players who were trapped in a cave in Thailand; a story I am sure we all followed with bated breath at the time. We of course were

Photo: Supplied. happy to oblige and much to our astonishment we were given a $2,000 donation to the Club and some extra gear that they had bought and had no further use for after filming finished. Thank you to L Evans Films for this generous donation and it was a pleasure doing business with you!
