Army Prepares for Fire Season Colonel Arran Hassell, Senior Defence Force Officer at Kokoda Barracks says like every land owner in the area, Defence has a vested interest in the sustainable management of the land, including reducing the risk of bushfires and other dangers to neighbours and surrounding communities. Colonel Hassell says this year, Kokoda Barracks have conducted two hazard reduction burns, with up to eight more to follow. These include portions of land on the lower reaches of Tamborine Mountain, in the middle of the field training area, as well as in the south-western sectors of the base. “Defence has also undertaken significant work to upgrade the fire trail system at the base,” said Col Hassell, “One of the main projects focussed on re-establishing a fire trail Reestablishing a fire trail on the Defence base. running east-west along the southern slopes of Tamborine Mountain. This track will act as a fire break and will enable ground fire-fighting crews to manage fires encroaching on Mount Tamborine from the south.” “Additionally, we conducted works on numerous other tracks including the fire trail near Killarney Glen. We are also working to improve a fire trail in the southern sector of the base which will run east-west. This fire trail is aimed at enabling ground fire-fighting crews to manage fires heading south towards Beechmont. The base has liaised with Canungra, Beechmont, Lower Beechmont and Tamborine Rural Fire Service brigades to coordinate the hazard reduction burns. “In July, we will also be inviting these brigades to drive the main fire trails throughout the base. The familiarisation will enable all parties to better protect our communities should a fire occur in the Field Training Area.” “While we cannot prevent a natural disaster, we are committed to reducing risks. We are working hard at Kokoda Barracks and alongside our valued Rural Fire Services brigades to protect the communities with whom we share this magnificent part of Australia,” he said.

100 Years of History to be Demolished

Over 100 years of history will be lost when the Pig and Calf Sale Yards in Helen Street, Beaudesert are demolished. In 1912, the sale yards were part of a larger complex located at the old railway station in Beaudesert. They have been earmarked for demolition as part of Scenic Rim Regional Council’s Beaudesert Town Centre Revitalisation Plan. Over 60 people attended the Hayes & Co sale on Monday 22nd June where 107 head of cattle were sold. Several people who attended the sale were visibly upset by the news of the demolition. Canungra resident Marie Ammala said she had made many friends over the years she had been coming to the sale and was angry that part of Beaudesert’s history would be lost. “I come in and see my friends, we do some shopping here and we might buy or sell,” said Marie, “I don’t know where these people will go if the yards are demolished.” Marie’s friend, Winnie Gurd from Aratula has been coming to the sale regularly for 40 years. Her daughter drives from Warwick each fortnight so she can attend.

Winnie Gurd of Aratula and Marie Ammala of Canungra at the sale yards.

Wallis Clarke recalled the days when the sale yards stretched along Helen Street when he attended the sales as a boy - 65 years ago. Kelly Baxter attends the sale with her son in school holidays. “He saves up his pocket money to buy calves from the sale,” said Kelly, “One of the best things about coming here is that he is mentored by some of the older farmers. They tell him what to look for and give him

tips on how to look after the calves. This is something you won’t find elsewhere.” Hayes & Co say they were advised in June 2020 that their lease would not be renewed, however Council claim they were advised by letter when the lease was renewed in August 2019. Hayes & Co currently do not have an alternative location for the fortnightly sale. A petition to save the sale yards is available at Canungra Hardware.

Canungra in Drought Despite Rain

While recent rainfall has given Canungra Creek a boost, Urban Utilities is asking residents to keep up their water saving efforts. Urban Utilities and Seqwater activated level one drought response in Canungra in early June, when the creek dropped below seven megalitres per day. Urban Utilities spokesperson Michelle Cull said Canungra remained in drought response despite recent rain in the catchment. “According to Seqwater’s monitoring, flows in Canungra Creek increased to 30 megalitres per day in mid-June following the rain, but since then flows have dropped to 16 megalitres per day,” she said. “Unfortunately there’s no more rain forecast for the immediate future, so we expect the flows in the creek to continue to drop and we’re working closely with Seqwater so we can keep the community updated.” David Higgins said his Lamington National Park Road property is normally self-sufficient for water, however he has had to cart water to the property since March. “We have 40,000 litre storage in tanks which overflow when we get enough rain,” said David, “But those tanks haven’t overflowed in three years.”

Shionagh Goold and David Higgins of have been carting water to their property since March.

David said he has lost several large gum trees in the past year due to drought. State Member for Scenic Rim, Jon Krause said in the aftermath of last year’s water crisis, he asked Seqwater to ensure the failure in monitoring didn’t happen again and to look at future water storage options. “The Department of Natural Resources previously had local committees which effectively managed water users’ entitlements - but this fell away many years ago,

and even after last year’s shortages no action has been taken by the department,” said Jon. “This water supply issue brings out another important issue. The SEQ Regional Plan, when it next changes, should recognise Canungra cannot keep having house after house added to the water system - at least not without additional storage being built.” “The urban footprint, where Council can consider including more residential areas, must reflect this reality,” he said.

Accident Hotspot for Native Wildlife

Wildlife carers have called for motorists travelling on Palomino Road, Spoonbill Drive and Bluegum Drive to slow down for wildlife. Wildcare carer, Bren Dalby, said in the last month she has attended many calls in response to wildlife hit by cars. “I have been to Palomino Road on four occasions – three times to euthanise macropods hit by cars, two of whom had been hit and left only to be spotted later by someone else. Another was called in by a family member of a girl who hit a large Eastern Grey girl and her joey – the joey had to be euthanised too.” “I have had three call outs to Spoonbill Drive. Two for dead wallabies, one of whom had a joey that was old enough and saved in time to go to a carer. Another with a live non viable joey who I had to euthanise, and another dead male wallaby with horrific leg fractures who had died before I got there.” Bren said the male wallaby was hit just beside the ‘Speed Kills Us’ sign which was installed by Wildcare. “I have been to Bluegum Drive more times than I care to consider,” she said, “But twice lately to wallabies – one wallaby had been hit by a car and had died and her small joey had to be euthanised. She had obviously

been attacked by a canine also. Another male wallaby hit by car and left with horrific injuries had just died when I arrived.” “Whilst I know speed and carelessness is a factor, I appreciate that these animals come out of nowhere and they can’t always be avoided,” said Bren.

“On no account should anyone ever swerve to avoid them, just brake, but please if you hit one call Wildcare.” Wildcare can be contacted on 5527 2444 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Phones are staffed by volunteers.

Local Authors Receive a Boost

Local authors received an unexpected boost when the office of Federal Member for Wright, Scott Buchholz MP, contacted Canungra Books and Art to purchase a number of books by local authors for Scott to gift at presentations and events during the year. “It was very exciting to have an opportunity to showcase a number of passionate local authors in our region and we were delighted to provide Scott’s office with a selection of new books for both adults and children,” said Jan McGregor, owner of Canungra Books and Art. “We always love to support local authors and this is a welcome initiative,” said Jan. Authors purchased included Peter Kuttner, Sally MacKinnon, Paula Peeters, Gillian Wells, Marissa Parker, Robin Adolphs and Karen Tyrrell. “We would like to thank Scott Buchholz for his initiative and support on behalf of all our local authors,” said Jan. “It takes a great deal of commitment and passion to write and publish a new book and the effort that we see our authors make to

complete their books and the excitement when their book is published is always inspiring.” With Covid-19 restrictions easing, Jan said she looks forward to planning regular “Meet the Author” events.

The first of these events is on Sunday 19th July with Anthony Johnson, author of a new fantasy novel “Breaking the Mask”. To view books by local authors visit Canungra Books and Art or phone 0418 792 161 for details.

Harley’s mother, Mandy said Mrs Foster, Mrs Todhunter and other staff loved the photos she sent in whilst they were home schooling. “They did such an amazing job, and just to know a few photos each week brought a big smile to their faces, and made our days of home schooling much nicer and added a sense of fun and connection. She is now just over 4 months old now and so beautiful,” said Mandy.

Trevor and Edward are currently the faces of Scenic Rim Cat Lodge. Alexandra and Scott say the brothers were welcomed into their family in May 2019, after the sad passing of Ernie. “We found Trevor and Edward as giveaways on Gumtree, and felt strongly about giving the boys a loving forever home. Trevor and Edward are currently 16 months old, full brothers, and are an absolute joy,” said Alexandra.

Humans of Canungra By Keer Moriarty Photography by Katherine O’Brien Photography Stephen Crook’s love of health and fitness began when he was very young. He purchased his first home gym at the age of 13. Today, he and his wife Kym own Live Fit Gym at Canungra and Yarrabilba, as well as Canungra Beauty. Something that people might not know about you? I was in the army. I joined in 2001 and was in for eight years. Then we moved to Canungra. Bought the beauty salon, where I did acupuncture and later took over some group training classes at Moriarty Park. What did you do in the army? I was infantry - so shoot things (laughs). I studied acupuncture while I was in the army, as well as a Personal Training course. Why acupuncture? Your father is an acupuncturist, isn’t he? I had no idea what I wanted to do. So I did acupuncture (laughs). I remember when you first moved to Canungra putting on muscle was one of your goals - was that something you always wanted? Definitely. I was always skinny. In the army I was the one everyone wanted to carry on the stretcher because I was the lightest person - I was 55 kilos. I saved up and bought my first home gym when I was 13 years old. I had no idea what I was doing, I just did it every day. I trained every day and didn’t put on anything because I didn’t do it right. Hold on, you trained every day and didn’t put on anything?

Page 10

I was working the same muscles every day, not worrying about what I ate. Food is half the equation - I wasn’t eating enough. You can’t train every single day, you have to give your body rest so it can grow. I’ve learned a lot now through years of study. How did you go from group classes at Moriarty Park to owning two gyms? I started doing some personal training at home in the garage. Then I rented a little place next to the Bean In cafe, put a little personal training studio in and later I rented the shed behind My Country Escape and made that into a 24 hour gym. Then I talked my way into here (Live Fit Gym Canungra). Talked your way in? I did! They didn’t want to give it to me but (thinks) ... what did I do? They had all the mowers in here, so I said “I’ll buy all the mowers off you and then I’ll put my gym in here”. And the owners said, “OK”. But then I didn’t have the money to buy the mowers so I said “Right, you give me the mowers, I’ll sell them all and then I’ll pay you back that money”. And the owners said, “OK”. So they gave me all the stock and I sold it. Then they let me use that money to fit the

place out. So I talked my way in to a few things. Who stands out amongst your personal training clients? Heaps, there are heaps. I’ve run so many challenges and people have lost 30 kilos, but the ones that impress me are the ones who keep it off. Because it’s not just going on a diet, it’s changing the way you’re going to eat and exercise for the rest of your life.

Residents Encouraged to Look After Their Health General Practitioner and Board member at Gold Coast Primary Health Network, Dr Lisa Beecham, is encouraging any patients with chronic health conditions to continue to see their regular GP, to keep well. Dr Beecham says that with the COVID19 pandemic, it’s now more important than ever before for patients to ensure their chronic conditions are well managed to not only keep them well and out of hospital, but to help reduce their risk of being severely impacted by COVID-19 if they were to become infected. “As GPs, we play a critical role in the community to help keep people well and to ensure our patients have their ongoing health needs met,” Dr Beecham said. “We want our patients to understand that they can still visit their regular GP for their ongoing health conditions and processes are in place to ensure their safety. But there’s also other options available including telehealth consultations through video or telephone.”

Page 12

“It’s a good idea to phone your practice, to discuss the best options for you,” Dr Beecham said. Dr Garth Kline of Canungra Valley Medical said the practice has remained open for telehealth phone consultations and face to face consultations. “As a community, we can not afford to lose sight of our individual health needs and allow our overall general health to fall by the wayside during these changes,” said Garth. “It is more important than ever that we focus on optimising our physical and mental health status and our medical conditions in order to reduce the risk of contracting a severe COVID-19 or influenza infection. Also to minimise the risk of deterioration of our existing medical conditions or the development of new mental and physical conditions,” he said. Dr Beecham said it is very important that patients with chronic conditions like asthma, lung conditions, cancer, diabetes or cardiovascular disease for example, continue to see their GP for their ongoing care and management.

The Canungra Times - July 2020

“We also want to ensure that all residents continue to see a GP to receive their regular medications, blood tests and x-rays and that underlying conditions continue to be diagnosed, as early diagnosis can greatly improve health outcomes,” said Dr Beecham. Dr Beecham said it was highly recommended that everyone from six months of age, gets the flu injection. Australians over 65-years-of-age, children from six months to less than five years of age, pregnant women, people at risk of influenza complications and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander residents are eligible for a free flu vaccine through the National Immunisation Program. “And because this is quite a stressful time, people may be struggling with their mental health. There are a number of services available that can help. Your GP can provide referrals or advice, but there’s some great online, phone services and resources available at headtohealth.gov.au,” Dr Beecham said.

LOOKING AFTER YOUR HEALTH DURING COVID-19

KEEP VISITING YOUR GP Now more than ever, it’s important you look after yourself and your family and continue to see a general practitioner (GP) to stay well. GPs play a crucial role in your healthcare and can: • check that you and your family immunisations are up-to-date • assist with your mental health if you need support • manage your chronic disease conditions • ensure you have the medications you need • ensure your cancer screening is up-to-date • detect any medical conditions early, which may improve your treatment and prognosis • develop a plan to help maintain your quality of life.

GP SURGERY

Having a trusted GP you visit regularly, who understands your medical history, can make sure your health checks are up-to-date and support you during these challenging times. GP practices are still open for business during COVID-19 and have processes in place to keep you safe. If you would prefer to stay home, telehealth and telephone options may also be available. It’s a good idea to call your practice, to discuss your options. If you have respiratory symptoms, always call the practice, before visiting.

From My Window

with Keer Moriarty, Editor Facing our fears...

As COVID-19 restrictions ease in Queensland, some of us are learning to face our fears. Months of being told to isolate and self distance have burned into our psyche to the point where, for some, socialising again has caused anxiety. Not everyone has dealt with this pandemic in the same way. Some were grateful for the break from their work schedule, some found that working from home meant always working, some went to breaking point under financial stress, others found that their natural inclination towards isolation was not so comfortable when isolation was forced upon us (yes that was me). The easing of restrictions is the new ‘coming out’. As we venture back into open spaces and crowded shopping centres there is a fear in the closeness of other people. Or perhaps for those of us who can’t quite get used to not shaking hands, there is awkwardness of what do to when greeting others. Somehow the elbow bumping just doesn’t do it for me. Call me old fashioned, but I still think a handshake says a lot about a person. This is the normal where we find peace in our gardens (if we are lucky enough to have a garden); the normal where going out is appreciated more than ever, although for some it is nerve wracking. There is no way of knowing if that person next to you in the supermarket is nervous of being so close to people after being isolated for months. All we can do is be kind to each other, every day.

Leigh and Ashley Bartlett with Alannah Phillips at the working bee

Working Together

Over 15 Wonglepong residents carried out a working bee on Saturday 20th June at Hugh Mahony Reserve, under the banner of Tamborine Mountain Landcare. The working bee began at the suggestion of Sandra Middis who contacted Scenic Rim Regional Council for permission to improve the area by removing weeds and tidying up the surrounds. Sandra said many residents use the area for walking and recreation. It is also used as a landing site for hanggliders and paragliders. Judith Roland of Tamborine Mountain Landcare said she sourced tubestock of native shrubs to plant on the site as residents removed Wild Tobacco bushes from around the landing site. “We had to be aware of the height of vegetation used because of the hanggliders and paragliders using the area,” said Judith. “The lake is a man made lake and although it looks like there are some weeds around the water, most of what you can see is actually native and important to the health of the waterway,” she said. Division 2 Councillor Jeff McConnell also attended the working bee. “It is a great opportunity to get to know residents in Wonglepong, to see what the people in my Division want and what they are happy to contribute to the area,” said Jeff. For more information join the Hugh Mahony Reserve Facebook group. The next working bee is planned for Saturday 11th July. Contact Sandra Middis on 0439 719 150 for further details.

Artessa Wildwood The crossing should have been put further up near the cafes, the amount of visitors that cross the road in front of cars is ridiculous. Kate Marconi It’s really annoying having a speed bump in town. A painted crossing would have been great by itself. Ben Read A by pass would have been better cause traffic is slow going through there anyway. Tania Horua-Eynon Why don’t you ask the people who live, and try to sleep now it’s installed a good night’s sleep is now a thing of the past. Well done. Jason Smith Ask Trudy how many times she had idiots speeding towards her a day while she’s on the crossing. People need to slow down through the entire town. Amanda Van Keimpema

Absolutely love my patch - haven’t needed to water. Totally looking after itself- apart from picking off a few hungry caterpillars. Jane Anderson

I welcome the crossing wholeheartedly! So many travelling through daily ~ cars and trucks ~ completely disregarding the speed limit and the quiet community we live in. Trying to cross the road on a weekend is chaotic at best, and I’m agile! I’ve watched so many elderly, disabled, and even families “trying” to cross the road between a stream of bikes and cars. I also believe another one up town would be great too! Safety first Danielle King There has been a problem for many years. I moved here in 2003 and I am one to welcome this. Children have no where to cross safely. We are lucky it hasn’t taken a fatality before this occurred. Police funding I agree on absolutely but to believe there is no issue is a bit head in cloud of a thought. I have five children and like many others in town, I’m relieved for this move. Testing options for people with respiratory symptoms have been expanded across the Gold Coast, with four respiratory clinics now open at Hope Island, Nerang, Upper Coomera and Burleigh Waters to test for COVID-19. The Nerang clinic is specifically for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community and residents who may be more at risk of complications from COVID-19 including the elderly or patients with preexisting health conditions. These GP led clinics have been established by the Commonwealth Government with Gold Coast Primary Health Network (GCPHN) supporting this process locally. GCPHN Board Chair, Dr Roger Halliwell, said the clinics provide another option for testing on the Gold Coast. They are community based, safe and free for local residents with no referral required, but bookings are essential. There are also other options available for residents wanting to be tested for COVID-19. This includes fever clinics at the Robina Health Precinct (near Robina Hospital) and Gold Coast University Hospital. These clinics are free and operate seven days a week. No bookings or referrals are required. “Some GPs are doing testing at their practices, but most will arrange telehealth consultations by video or telephone, so patients can discuss their symptoms. Their GP can then arrange for testing at a pathology clinic. Patients should always contact the practice first, before visiting, if they have any respiratory symptoms,” Dr Halliwell said. “We currently have low numbers of the virus being detected across Queensland, so testing is even more important to pick up any new cases or any undetected community transmission, to stop the spread.” “We urge anyone with even minor respiratory symptoms such as fever, cough, sore throat, shortness of breath and running/stuff nose to get tested.” For details on COVID-19 testing facilities visit: https://gcphn.org.au/community/covid-19/ covid-19-testing/.

Meet the Author with Anthony Johnson

Canungra Books and Art are delighted to be hosting a Book Launch and Book Signing on Sunday 19th July from 11am to 2.30pm with local author Anthony Johnson. Anthony’s debut novel “Breaking The Mask”, available worldwide via every major distributor, is a culmination of many years of research and dedicated writing. Originally from England, Anthony moved to Australia in 2016. “Writing is my passion,” said Anthony, “It is what I’ve done all my life.” The historical fantasy tale follows Henry Game’s journey from England during the 1500s through to modern day New York City. Henry has decided that his time is at an end. He uses his last days to gather his journals and accounts together. His focus is finally clear, death has given him the impetus required to face his greatest

shame before it is too late. He will tell his story, and be what may, he will have a clean conscience when the time comes to die. While the character of Henry Game is fiction, the events Henry encounters are historical. Anthony’s research unearthed some little known historical facts which create an intricate web for readers to follow. This new book offers a great read for fantasy addicts and those wanting to embark on a journey into the very popular world of fantasy and historical fiction. Come along on Sunday 19th July and chat with Anthony and hear his story. Breaking the Mask will be available for purchase on the day. For all enquiries please phone Canungra Books and Art on 0418 792 161. Updates on the event can be found on the Canungra Books and Art Facebook page www.facebook/canungrabooksandart/

Making Music Together

Tamborine Mountain Orchestra improvised to allow members to make music together whilst being apart. Orchestra member, Tricia Tommasi said they were fortunate to have some tech savvy members to assist. “We chose a fairly simple piece with several parts that could be played by multiple instruments, Beethoven’s 7th Symphony Allegretto,” said Tricia. “We each recorded our parts whilst listening to the track through ear buds!” she said.

The music was fused together using the Apple app, Garage Band. Orchestra members then chose pictures to create a YouTube video ‘Tamborine Mountain Orchestra in Lockdown’ that has been loaded onto the Orchestra’s Facebook Page. The Orchestra’s rehearsals recommence on Wednesday 15th July. Their next concert is planned for Sunday 13th September at St George’s Church, 2 Dapsang Drive, Tamborine Mountain.

Nursery Reopening Gets Thumbs Up

Maxine, Dellis, Shari, Judy and Betty.

Dolls for Kwazulu-Natal

A group of local women have been busy making dolls for children in the Kwazulu-Natal province of South Africa. The handmade dolls are part of the Uthando Project, which was established in 2004 by infant, child and family psychiatrist Dr Julie Stone. Julie was moved by the plight of children in Kwazulu-Natal whose lives were severely impacted by the HIV/AIDS pandemic sweeping South Africa. There were few resources to stimulate the social and emotional development of children. When Julie returned to she recruited friends to provide simple, brown skinned dolls to send for carers of children. Judy Gadd and Shari Sherriff said members of the group have varied duties, for example, Shari embroiders the eyes on the dolls and others in the group will dress or sew hair on them. Anyone who is interested in helping to make dolls or assist with the cost of postage please contact Shari Sherriff on 0413 765 494.

Scenic Rim Regional Council’s nursery reopened on Friday 3rd July for residents to redeem their free tree vouchers. The nursery will honour vouchers issued with 2019-2020 rates notices for those who may have missed an opportunity to collect their plants during the nursery’s COVID-19 closure. Scenic Rim Mayor Greg Christensen said Council’s free trees initiative plays an important part in the greening of the region and enhancing its biodiversity. Flowering and non-flowering plants available in pots include ground cover and rockery specimens up to 0.5 metres, dwarf shrubs up to two metres, screening shrubs from two metres to four metres, specimen shrubs from two to four metres, medium canopy trees up to 10 metres and large canopy trees of 10 metres plus. The number of customers allowed in the nursery at any one time is limited to five and only customers collecting plants will be allowed to enter the nursery. Customers are asked to bring a bag or container to carry their plants and browsing will be limited, particularly while other customers are waiting. Details of the COVID-19 safety measures at the nursery and at free tree distribution locations in coming months, will be provided to ratepayers on their free tree vouchers, which will be issued with July rates notices.

Whiddon Staff were Super Heroes for a Day

Whiddon resident Mabel with Laurel Nott, Robert Campbell and Suzanne Jones. Photo supplied.

Residents of Whiddon Beaudesert Star aged care home were treated to a super morning tea as part of Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea on 28th May. Canungra resident and Whiddon Leisure

Coordinator, Robert Campbell, said he decided on a super hero theme for the morning after reading an article stating everyone who fights cancer is a super hero. “I thought it was a great way to make the

morning fun. I sent an email and text to all the staff and I was really happy with the effort everyone went to in dressing up,” said Robert. “We try to support all the major fundraisers and big days like RSPCA Cup Cake Day, Pink for Breast Cancer and Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea,” he said, “The residents loved it. We set the bar really high this time.” Residents joined in the spirit of the event with one resident wearing his Incredible Hulk t-shirt. Staff members Laurelle Nott and Suzanne Jones sang and a $1 raffle raised $144 raised for Cancer Council Queensland. Robert said Whiddon Beaudesert Star have ensured the effect of COVID-19 restrictions on residents is minimal. “As soon as the lockdown started, we increased our Leisure Programs from two to three programs to keep the residents busy and socialising,” said Robert. “We began using Skype for residents to be able to see and speak to their families. Then we started Risk Free visits via a window and this quickly became the most popular way for families to keep in touch.” We have followed the Government legislation to the letter but the Risk Free visits and Skype have enabled people to keep in touch with their families. We’ve been doing window visits all day every day,” he said. Robert said staff monitored residents to ensure they kept active and were interacting with staff members and other residents during lockdown. “If we found someone wasn’t coming to activities we made sure they had one on one time with staff,” he said. “We have really tried to support the residents through this time and I think they have coped incredibly well.”

Binna Burra Kitchen Reopens

Binna Burra Kitchen reopened on Friday 3rd July with a new manager and its popular dine-in and takeaway menu, as well as a providore store carrying a variety of fresh local produce. Binna Burra Kitchen first opened at the start of the year on the Old School Site at Beechmont. With the 87 year old Binna Burra Lodge destroyed by fire, the local Beechmont Area Progress Association, with the backing of Scenic Rim Regional Council, provided the old Headmasters Cafe for Binna Burra to get back to business, employing local staff and rebuilding its food and beverage team. A new member to this team was Shane Bessent, a recently arrived resident of Illinbah. With the reopening, Shane has taken on the role of Binna Burra Food and Beverage Manager and will oversee day-to-day operations at Binna Burra Kitchen. Shane has a depth of experience running the Forest Brewing Company, a microbrewery and restaurant in the Otway Ranges, inland from Apollo Bay on The Great Ocean Road. Binna Burra Kitchen is the perfect fit for Shane’s experience, working in a beautiful country location surrounded by some of

the world most scenic landscapes. Shane is passionate about bringing local produce to the plate and the Scenic Rim is one of Australia’s best fresh produce regions. “We’ve teamed up with Scenic Rim Farm Box to bring wonderful local ingredients into our menu, and also offer them fresh in our new providore store,” explains Shane. “At the same time we are working with locals at the community garden next door to supply a herbaceous range of garnishes.”

The Canungra Times - July 2020

Along with the ‘eat-local’ menu, Binna Burra Kitchen will be pouring draft beer and wine from the barrel. In addition to Black Hops’s Lay Day lager and Mid Range pale ale, a new Eggnog stout will be on tap. Binna Burra Kitchen has also expanded its dining area to include the new Binna Burra Pavilion. The undercover area offers panoramic views of the Numinbah Valley and, like all the Kitchen’s outdoor areas, is pet friendly.

Ask the Physio -

Have you ever watched a baby or your dog or cat breathe? What do you notice? Probably a lot of three-dimensional expansive movement around the abdomen and whole body. We all start off in life breathing correctly but over time most of us have learned bad habits. We unintentionally trained ourselves out of the most efficient and natural method of breathing - diaphragmatic breathing. With poor breathing habits, gas exchange is not efficient. This means that your cells are not getting the nutrients they need at the best rate. Retraining yourself to breathe using your diaphragm can lead to natural vitality and well-being. When you breathe using your diaphragm, a large dome shaped muscle at the base of your rib cage, your rib cage expands at the front, sides and back. It presses downward on your abdomen and although you are not actually breathing into your belly, your belly does move in and out. It helps you to relax, lowering the harmful effects of the stress hormone cortisol on your body as well as lowering your heart rate and blood pressure.

Diaphragmatic Breathing organ systems to work more efficiently. You digest your food better, your heart pumps more efficiently, your nerves and blood vessels are free to move, and you actually release more hormones that make you feel more confident.

Diaphragmatic

Interestingly, your diaphragm is the key component to your core stability. Correct diaphragmatic breathing allows your diaphragm to perform its respiratory function while simultaneously providing stabilisation support for your spine by an increased intra-abdominal pressure. Your posture will also benefit as in order to do diaphragmatic breathing properly, you have to sit tall. This allows all of your

1. Sit or lie comfortably, with your knees bent and your shoulders, head and neck relaxed. 2. Place both hands below your chest bone with your fingers interlaced. 3. Breathe in slowly through your nose so that your hands are forced to move apart. Breathe out through your mouth. 4. Try to keep your shoulders absolutely still so that your upper chest is not moving. 5. Do this for three minutes at a time, two or three times a day. After a few weeks of practising this regularly, you should find this will become your normal breathing. If you suspect that you have a tight, poor functioning diaphragm, a visit to your physiotherapist should be able to help you.

Hyundai Santa Fe Highlander Review

Reviewed by Lee McKenzie-McKinnon, Editor, carandbikenews.com.au The current model Hyundai Santa Fe Highlander is the best one yet from the brand. While it may be getting replaced this year there are still plenty of reasons to buy this model before they all disappear. The Santa Fe Highlander is packed with technology, safety and convenience items that you might not expect from Hyundai. The Highlander is the top of the range and is perfect for the family however it also covers the luxury and tech expectations you’d expect to find when spending over $60,500 plus on-road costs. Hyundai’s softer, taller styling accommodates better visibility for rear passengers and the driver has much better views. This model welcomed back the petrol V6. While a V6 may seem like it could be super costly in the fuel bill, this model was a surprise and compares well with competitors. Being a seven-seater it needs the power to get going and keep moving and the LambdaII 3.5-litre V6 is bigger, more powerful, and just more suited to Hyundai’s flagship SUV. The V6’s outputs of 206kW and 336Nm are up (by 68kW and 95Nm) on the old 2.4-litre four it replaces, which is no surprise.

Hyundai Santa Fe Highlander

Matched to Hyundai’s eight-speed auto, the Santa Fe deliveries an easy driving experience that is a big improvement over the old model. Hyundai claims the new 3.5-litre V6 can get by on 10.6L/100km of regular unleaded on the combined cycle. The test rendered a slightly different result with around 12L/100km. This is still impressive for a car that is around the 1800kg mark. From the moment you jump inside, the Highlander presents as a much more expensive SUV.

The Highlander has six airbags, ABS, stability and traction controls, forward collision warning, forward AEB (with pedestrian and cyclist detection), active cruise, lane keep assist, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert and exit warning to stop anyone getting out of the car being hit by an approaching vehicle. The Hyundai Santa Fe Highlander is packed with features, looks great and goes and handles really well. Worth a look if a seven-seat SUV is what you need.

Canungra’s History Canungra Sport

and

Recreation Grounds By Joyce Libke

On the lithograph for the sale of 107 town allotments in Canungra on 1st May 1916, the Canungra Sport and Recreation Grounds (Canungra Showground) was shown as ‘Reserve for Sports Ground’. In 1918, a committee was formed to buy the block from Laheys on behalf of the community. The price was 400 pounds (today’s equivalent $800) to be paid over eight years with interest of 5%. A Committee was formed - Edwin Franklin (President), P Gillbert (Secretary), J W Duncan (Treasurer), Amos Finch, Albert Curtis, Harry Dauth and David Lawton. Trustees were appointed: Archie Banks (owner of the house on the hill above the grounds), J W Duncan and Amos Finch (owner of much of the privately owned land in the Canungra Valley). Amos was a trustee for over 30 years. A handout, approximately an A5 piece of paper asking for assistance from the community to help fund the project, was found amongst the historic items when the current Ambulance Station was opened in 1990. It was tucked in the ‘Case Book’ for 1920 to 1926 where the back had been used as scribble paper by Matt Braiden, the QATB officer at the time. He also had the role of Secretary for the Trustees of the Sports Ground. The debt was paid off on time through the hard work and generosity of the locals. The handout was a public notice, headed ‘Canungra Sports Ground’ and stating: “At a meeting held recently by the Trustees and Members of Committee of above public grounds it was decided that in view of the interest to the general public in raising the necessary funds to acquire this property, an opportunity should be given to all residents of Canungra and district to help in this direction by becoming members of this Public Association. The membership is for one year ending 30th June in each year, and the annual fee has been fixed at 10s 6d per member. The privileges allowed to members include free entry to all sports and events held in the grounds, provided such sports are being run by the Sports Ground Committee, or being conducted by others for the benefit of the Sports Ground. Membership also includes a lady’s card, and in case of members who are married, their children, up to the age of 12 years will also be admitted free, on occasions already referred to. As this is a matter vitally affecting every resident, the Trustees express a hope that as many as possible will avail themselves of this opportunity to assist in acquiring for them and their descendant’s use such a beauty spot as this, and one cannot be surpassed, if equalled, in any township in S. Eastern Queensland. Intending members please communicate with either of the undersigned, who will be pleased to enrol them and issue the membership card in due course.” For the first official Canungra AH&I Show held in 1938, the message on the cover of the schedule read “Splendid Programme in Beautiful Setting”. That same message was continued for the next 10 years and it is still relevant today.

Scenic Rim Regional Council - Comments Cr Jeff McConnell, Division 2 Councillor These are my own personal views. I do not purport to speak on behalf of Council.

Budget

What do you get for your rates? The community gets more than roads and rubbish. Council provide the following services: libraries, sport and recreation, economic and tourism development, investment attraction and infrastructure. Although a ratepayer may not access these services every day they do within their lifetime. The issue is does the Council provide these services to a level that provides ratepayers with value for money? The Budget process has been interesting to say the least. Having only two months from our election to digest and approve an $80+ million budget has led to some interesting discussions about our priorities. Can I ask you don’t look at other bigger Councils for comparison, Brisbane has a budget over $3 billion, Gold Coast $2 billion, Logan $1 billion and Ipswich $600 million. The Scenic Rim Population is 43,000 - Gold Coast 610,000 - Logan City 330,000 - Ipswich City 220,000. We live in a semi-rural paradise without the built-up suburban rat race that comes with our neighbouring councils and as such we pay higher rates for that privilege. Do we wish for lower rates, of course we do but with lower rates must come either more ratepayers or lower services. All three neighbouring councils fit inside the area of the Scenic Rim with a 1000sq Km left over. My goal and that of other Councillors is to ensure that the ratepayer gets value for their rates money.

Councillor Pay Raise

There has been some inaccurate reporting in the media and on social media on this so let me set this straight. On 20th January 2020, the previous Councillors voted to accept a new pay raise as reviewed by the Local Government Remuneration Commission which is an Independent Authority from Councils. This was done prior to COVID19 restrictions. Two weeks ago, I sent an email to the Mayor and other Councillors requesting we discuss this issue as I was not happy to accept the increase given the current issues facing Scenic Rim ratepayers. I made it known during the election campaign that I was not going to accept the raise this year. At the Ordinary meeting on 8th June, the Mayor, after I had a discussion with him about my email, tabled a Mayoral Minute rejecting the increase with ALL Councillors stating that they would not accept the raise this year. The matter went to a formal vote at the next Ordinary meeting on Mon 22nd June 2020. There was no hesitation by any Councillor or the Mayor to reject this pay raise.

Cr Virginia West, Division 3 Councillor

Water Saving

Despite the recent rain, Urban Utilities has asked residents on reticulated water to exercise water saving methods as the Canungra Creek flows have dropped considerably. Canungra residents have an excellent history of water saving when required and during the drought months earlier in the year reached 75 litres per person per day which was very commendable. With the COVID-19 event ,and dry autumn months, the usage has risen to 125 litres per day. The tanker filling station is, at this point, still operating, however residents are reminded to take shorter showers, turn the tap off while cleaning teeth, fix any leaks and put a bucket in the shower to collect water for the garden. You will be surprised how much water can be saved for those vegetables we are all growing.! As Council prepares to formulate the Growth Management Plan - a strategy to inform all levels of government on urban growth within the Scenic Rim, I can assure residents the reliability and adequacy of water to service the broader Canungra area, coupled with the standpipe, will be assessed.

Budget Discussions

This year’s Budget discussions have been the most challenging in my time as a Councillor due to the continuous events of drought followed by bushfires then COVID-19 and the huge financial effects our community have experienced and are still managing. However all councils are required to operate as a business, ensuring the viability and longevity of the business at the same time acknowledging the effect on our community and ensuring all infrastructure is maintained for future years. Budget Day is currently scheduled for July 1st so my next months column will include the contents of the 2020/2021 Budget.

EKKA Public Holiday

Monday 10th August has been retained as the Scenic Rim EKKA holiday despite the cancellation of the EKKA this year. I would encourage our residents to get out and about in the region during this long weekend and spend your money locally on having a fun weekend. It is so encouraging to see the visitors returning to Canungra during the weekends and our cafes, shops and park a hive of activity again.

Business Well Being Supported

Council is offering a series of free counselling sessions for any Scenic Rim business owners and employees impacted by the COVID-19 event who may be feeling overwhelmed or stressed or suffering financial hardship as a result of this pandemic. Lavender House in Beaudesert have a long history of caring and supportive counselling to our community. Information about this service is via website www.scenicrim.qld.gov.au/businesses/ business-counselling-support/1

I am always available to talk with residents on 5540 5403 or 0407 630 052 or email virginia.w@scenicrim.qld.gov.au. I am not able to return to Canungra Library on the second Saturday of the month just yet, however hope to resume again in August or September.

Veterans Day

The Memorial Service for the event is almost complete and will be held at D J Smith Memorial Park on Saturday 15th August 2020 commencing at 10.30am. Dress for the occasion is coat and tie, and medals or equivalent. Still to be finalised is the time and location for the social side of the day and more information will be available in the August edition. Be there just prior to 10.30am and set aside a couple of hours after the service to meet up with old friends and meet some of the younger veterans we hope to see on the day.

Membership

Canungra RSL Sub-Branch is not renowned for its large membership, but it has managed to maintain suitable numbers to be a separate identity. Whereas many small branches have had to merge with other branches and become a ‘Chapter’ of that Sub-Branch. The Canungra Sub-Branch has no plans of merging, but at the same time, an increase in our numbers would certainly not go unwanted. There are ex-Sub-Branch members amongst us and indeed young veterans who are encouraged to join us. Some ex-members for various reasons have turned away over the years and I would ask that they think again and come back into our ranks. Those younger veterans who are concerned that if they join will be asked to fill various committee positions, not so! If you want to get involved, I ask that you consider this offer, otherwise, please join me and those in attendance for a quiet beverage or two.

Goodbye

and

Thank You:

With the AGM fast approaching, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Keer Moriarty and the Canungra Times, for giving the Canungra RSL Sub-Branch the opportunity to convey Sub-Branch information to fellow members and the citizens of our district. A new President and Committee are to be elected at the AGM as I plan on having time off from the appointment of President. A huge thank you to the Sub-Branch members and, indeed, the citizens of Canungra and surrounding area - it has been a great privilege to have served you. Take care. Remember, the best friend COVID-19 has is COMPLACENCY. Page 30

The town entry treatment is designed to slow motorists down when entering Canungra.

Red Road Rolled Out

Canungra is amongst three communities across the Scenic Rim to receive the ‘red road’ treatment. Bright road markings and signs have been installed at the entries to Canungra, Peak Crossing and Kalbar, improving safety for both drivers and the community. Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said the treatments are proven, cost-effective solutions that make sure drivers are more aware of the change in speed limit as they enter towns. The projects were delivered by Ventia and RoadTek, supporting jobs, and joins a $4.9 million upgrade underway along Beaudesert-Nerang Road through Canungra and between Wonglepong and Mount Nathan. “Speed, alongside the other fatal five, remain huge factors in crashes on our highway and this is just one measure to help make sure we all drive so others survive,” Mr Bailey said. “There are now more than 40 towns across the sunshine state with TETs, and this announcement complements other initiatives being delivered.” Scenic Rim Mayor Greg Christensen said the new town entry treatments being installed by the Department of Transport and Main Roads were a welcome addition in the region’s towns. “These entry treatments will give motorists a stronger visual cue to slow down as they approach our towns and villages, which will help keep everyone safe,” Cr Christensen said. “In particular, it will be helpful for our many visitors who come to the Scenic Rim to experience the character of our towns and villages, and who may not be so familiar with existing speed limits.” Ventia Contract Manager Andrew Spence said the company was honoured to help TMR deliver its Targeted Road Safety Program (TRSP) initiatives. “Our teams work on state and federal roads and highways network every day,” Mr Spence said. “We experience first-hand the benefits of initiatives such as the Township Entry Treatments (TET), as it encourages drivers to enter into Queensland’s rural and regional towns safely. “We are also proud to have worked with TMR to deliver a more sustainable solution by providing additional enhancements to the pavement for an extended service life.” A raised pedestrian crossing has also been installed in Christie Street, Canungra to address pedestrian safety concerns that have been raised with TMR by residents, Council and State representatives.

State Wide By Jon Krause, State Member, Scenic Rim

The

future of development in

Canungra

At the end of June, I showed one of my colleagues, Andrew Powell MP, around the region. Andrew is Shadow Minister for Planning, and in Canungra I met with some locals to discuss concerns about our roads and also the impact of ongoing residential development on water supplies and roads. While Council is the ultimate decisionmaker on development, the State Government does set some boundaries around where housing can and cannot go. I am worried that too much subdivision in the future could see more water shortages, like we saw last year, along with increasing safety issues with traffic through town. While recent work by Main Roads to build a raised pedestrian crossing and other works are welcome to slow people down through town, we cannot simply keep approving more and more houses in the district with the present water supplies and road network. More spending on these two areas can help, but so can more prudent and cautious planning so we don’t let development get ahead – or not too far ahead – of the things needed to service that development.

Jon Krause attending a hazard reduction burn by Tamborine Mountain Rural Fire Brigade

Reducing Bushfire Risk

I recently assisted the Tamborine Mountain Rural Fire Brigade in carrying out a hazard reduction burn on Council reserve land off Guanaba Road. I commend the brigade for their initiative in arranging hazard reduction burns, when the conditions are right, and also Leeton Lee who directed the operation and conducted the burn-off using traditional indigenous methods and strategies – something I support and which forms part of the LNP’s 10 point plan in relation to fire services. I have had a number of residents in contact with me concerned that more needs

to be done to reduce bushfire hazards – both on State land and other land too. These concerns have been raised with both National Parks and QLD Fire and Rescue Service, encouraging them to manage stateowned land and work with the community to reduce fire hazards. I know burn-offs can create some smoke issues, but it is important that they are done to reduce the risk of dangerous bushfire impacting properties – before it is too late.

Here in Australia we are blessed with an incredible diversity of birdlife. For over 30 years, I have had the great pleasure of watching birds in Australia. Today as I sit here writing this article only a stones throw from my hometown, it is reassuring to hear and see the common bird species that I grew up with. One such bird species is the Striated Pardalote. This bird is easily recognised by its small size, bold white eyebrow with yellow spot in front of the eye and yellow or red spot on the side of the wing. Throughout Australia, there are six races of Striated Pardalote. In South-east Queensland, Pardalotus striatus melanocephalus resides. Female birds tend to be duller in colour than males. Striated Pardalotes are also easily located by their distinctive ‘chip chip’ call. Striated Pardalotes have a distribution that covers most of Australia. They are very common for such a small bird. These birds are incredibly active and can be hard to locate when moving amongst foliage in tall trees. Usually, these birds move in pairs and it is rare to see them on the ground. Another species, the Spotted Pardalote can also be seen in South-east Queensland, however, these birds differ from Striated by their yellow and red rump and spotted wings. Striated Pardalotes can be found in a variety of habitats including parks, eucalypt forests, roadside verges, gardens, rainforests and dry inland forests. Breeding is common throughout spring and summer. Striated Pardalotes are adaptive birds and will build their globular nest via a tunnel in an exposed soil bank or in a tree hollow. I have had many conversations with people over the years that have had to delay projects around their house as these small birds have moved in and nested in exposed banks or sand piles. Striated Pardalotes are only found in Australia. It is my hope that these tiny birds continue to thrive throughout Australia. The Australian bush would not be the same without them.

Sprinter and Sprummer By Susan Cully Timothy Entwisle, the author of book, Sprinter and Sprummer- Australia’s Changing Seasons, is suggesting a complete overhaul of our outlook regarding seasons in Australia. Timothy is well-qualified to have an opinion, having worked in senior positions for the Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne, Sydney Royal Botanic Gardens and Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew (London). The publisher, CSIRO Publishing, writes: “Since 1788, Australia has carried the yoke of four European seasons that makes no sense in most parts of the country. We may like them for historical or cultural reasons or because they are the same throughout the world, but they tell us nothing of our natural environment. It’s time to reject those seasons and to adopt a system that brings us more in tune with our plants and animals – a system that helps us to notice and respond to climate change.” Using his qualifications as a scienSprinter and Sprummer - Australia’s Changing tist and communicator, Entwisle Seasons by Timothy Entwisle. “illustrates how our natural world really responds to seasonal changes in temperature, rainfall and daylight, and why it would be better to divide up the year based on what Australian plants do rather than ancient rites of the Northern Hemisphere.” He reviews the origins of traditional seasonal systems including Aboriginal seasonal classification. He then proposes a new five-season approach, explaining their characteristics along with the biological changes that define them. In this context he catalogues some favourite plants, the carnivorous plants, the Wollemi Pine, orchids and fungus. And there is a final chapter on climate change – now changing all of our seasons.

News from St Luke’s By Di Ayscough Have you heard St Luke’s bell ringing again? Hopefully you have and it brings a smile to your face, despite the early wake-up call it might bring. Somehow ringing the church bell brings a sense of joy and a message to say we are feeling alive again. Thankfully we are now allowed to have up to eighteen (18) people attend a Sunday service at St Luke’s. Although seating is well-spaced, we are all feeling very happy to be back. Our organist Anne can play the hymns but we are not allowed as yet to sing. We can hum! We are not allowed to share the communion cup but we can partake in the communion bread. Slowly, surely and safely we are returning to the new normal. While our personal relationship with Christ has always been there, we have been very limited (as everyone has) in what we could do. Father Ken spoke recently about helping people “through their physical, emotional, mental, social, cultural and spiritual needs.” He said, “people do not care how much you know, until they know how much you care.” Those words struck a chord with me and I hope we can all think about at least one person we have helped through this difficult period. We must never stop caring or showing kindness. An excellent example of someone caring about others is Mark Conway. Have you seen Mark around town? He is a local bearded young man who certainly stands out. Mark has coloured his hair and beard to a bright, almost illuminous pink to raise money for breast cancer. We are extremely grateful to Mark for his time and effort to record our Sunday services for YouTube. He certainly stands out as someone who cares and it would be wonderful if we all contributed to his cause to show we care. Please check Mark’s Facebook page to see how you can donate to this very important cause. Thankfully we are all blessed by this caring community we live in.

CANUNGRA BOWLS CLUB By Ray Hickson

With the easing of the Covid-19 restrictions, up to 20 players can now play roll up at Canungra Bowls Club. Before play, each person must register in the COVID-19 registration book. There is a maximum of four players per rink. Due to the size of the Clubhouse, no more than 16 of the 20 players can be in the Clubhouse at one time and must be seated at the

tables, not at the bar. Social distancing must be adhered to at all times.

Competition Games

Unfortunately all competitions for 2020 have been cancelled or postponed due to COVID-19 restrictions, including the popular Pennants competition. There have been discussion between several Clubs, about a competition which may commence in August.

Roll Days

Roll Days are Wednesday and Saturday 9am for 9.30am start. For other days please phone the Greens Director, Brian Laurence on 0412 107 783.

Membership

All enquiries for membership please email canungrabowlsclub@gmail.com. Social membership is $5 per year. Full bowling membership $110 per year.

Canungra Owls Soccer and Moriarty Park News By Bren Dalby I hope next month we will have enough happening to split the Moriarty Park News from Soccer News - YAY - soccer season finally about to get crackin! At this stage our season is due to commence 10th July. Sadly, we only have three teams this year and we thank them for supporting the club and playing what will be an unusual season to say the least. The Club in turn will make sure we do as much as can be done to support them and ensure we make the best of what we have . We hope other players keep fitness up ready to get stuck into a fantastic 2021! Canungra Hotel are ready for us to begin with Sunday meat tray raffles too and we are grateful to them for helping us out.

Social tennis is coming along nicely on Tuesday nights from 5.30pm and our Book a Court system infrastructure can now be implemented as restrictions ease sufficiently. We tried to have a Trivia Night on 19th June. Hardly anyone arrived so we will advertise better the following ones – watch notice boards at Foodworks and around town as well as Facebook. It is a great, cheap and fun night out and the proceeds go to a selection of causes. FoodWorks support us amazingly every time. Sadly, I have had several reports of dog pooh being left on fields at Moriarty Park. Those who are doing the right and respectful thing – thank you; please remind those you see not doing that and potentially ruining the situation for all, to pick up after their dog. I find it hard to believe that in this community some think it is ok to leave dog

pooh everywhere their dog chooses to drop it. Please respect others and indeed yourself. Any enquiries regarding Moriarty Park to Bren Dalby by phone 0414 435 919 or by email to bren.dalby@bigpond.com. Check out the Moriarty Park Facebook page and our website www.moriartypark. com.au for information about events and sporting clubs who use the Centre. Bookings for hall to Alesia 0402167966 (like myself, Alesia has poor mobile reception so she may have to call back). Canungra Owl Soccer Club enquiries should be directed to Cameron on 0418 295 284 or via the Owl’s Facebook page! Moriarty Park meetings are generally held every third Monday of the month at 7pm and anyone interested in the centre is welcome to attend.
