Park Raises Smiles

The official opening of the new playground equipment at D J Smith Park was a celebration for all, with an animal nursery, disc jockey and jumping castle complementing the new play equipment recently installed by Scenic Rim Regional Council. The new equipment includes all-abilities equipment such as new swings suitable for children with mobility issues, making a safer, more inclusive park for everyone. The play structures were designed to be in keeping with the rural feel of the town centre. The tree house design of the main structure includes a tower, tube swirl slide, rick climbing structures and bridges connecting smaller towers to the main tower. Families from across the Scenic Rim visited the town for the opening celebration. Being in December, this also included a visit from Santa Claus, who delighted the children. Rumour has it the structure is also used by many adults in Canungra during early morning walks and exercise classes! More photos, page 15

Local swimmer, Morgan Lee attended the 10th Pacific School Games in Adelaide from 3rd – 9th December 2017. Morgan was very happy with her results - second in the Mixed 16-19 Multi Class Medley Relay and fourth in the Mixed 16-19 Multi Class Freestyle Relay. Her best achievement was placing third in her individual Girls 16-19 Multi Class 100m Breastroke and then a credible sixth in Girls 16-19 Multi Class 50m Butterfly. All states and territories of Australia were represented as well as nine other countries. In total eleven sports were played ranging from swimming to athletics to golf and basketball. The Opening Ceremony was held at the Adelaide Showgrounds on 3rd December 2017 where the athletes marched into the arena cheered on by the many supporters in the crowd. Each sports discipline then held their competition at various locations around Adelaide over the course of the week. The swimming was held in the South Australia Aquatic and Leisure Centre with 900 swimmers competing over five days. Morgan had been selected for the Queensland swim team in four events – two individual and two relays. A closing Ceremony was held at the pool on the last day of competition where swimmers of the meet were announced.

New Faces at Canungra Valley Medical

With a growing population in the township, Canungra Valley Medical has been operating seven days a week for some time. Practice Manager, Julie Halliday said the practice has been fortunate to find two new doctors who will both work on a permanent part-time basis. “We want to ensure patients can get appointments when they need them,” said Julie, “We are committed to caring for the health of the residents of Canungra, which for our practice means offering medical assistance seven days a week.” To assist Dr David Christiansen, Dr Dayman Steptoe and Dr Lavanya Dastari in the busy practice, two new General Practioners have joined the team. Dr Elizabeth Jose started taking patients in December and is dividing her time between the Canungra practice and her work at Bond University as a lecturer and conducting research into obesity management. Her research background has taken her to the United Kingdom where she was involved in epilepsy research projects. Since being in Australia she has worked in the Torres Strait, Melbourne and Ipswich as well as the Gold Coast University Hospital.

Dr Elizabeth Jose is taking patients at Canungra Valley Medical

Dr Elizabeth said is passionate about general health, but particularly the management of obesity. “My interests include chronic disease management, preventive medicine, women’s health, paediatrics and mental health,” said Dr Elizabeth. “My dream is to see all Australians healthy.”

Dr Shamila Palipana will start at the practice during January 2018. Dr Shamila has recently worked in at a General Practice in Toowomba as well as several hospitals. Her special interests include geriatrics, palliative care, mental health and she says she really enjoys working as a General Practitioner and getting to know her patients.

Going Gypsy with Bowtop Wagons

Sometimes the best things in life happen almost by accident, and that seems to be the case for Alan and Karlie Brewer. Alan is a window installer by trade, but when his wife Karlie asked him to make a gypsy-style caravan he didn’t realise what it would lead to. Bowtop Wagons is now a successful business operating just outside Canungra sending these remarkable Wagons all around Australia. “I made one for Karlie when we lived at Nerang,” said Alan, “People saw it outside the house and would come to the house to ask about it. Pretty soon I had people ordering them for market stalls or just to travel in.” “Each wagon has its own unique vibe, according to what the owner has requested,” he said. The trailer part of the wagons are made in Molendinar and the tops are made from A grade marine ply and painted with marine grade gloss paint. They can be fitted out with sleeping areas for camping, or a larger table and seating for a market stall. The wagons have solar and battery lights and hand water pumps installed. Alan and Karlie have been visiting Canungra to camp for about 30 years, and moved to the area about six months ago. “I can’t believe we are living here now, but it is an ideal spot for us,” said Alan. For more information about Bowtop Wagons call Alan on 0422 470 717 or visit their Facebook page.

Alpacas Surprise Star Gardens Residents

Is it a reindeer? Maybe Santa with his sleigh a little early? No ... it is an alpaca! Residents at Star Gardens Aged Living in Beaudesert were treated to a visit by a couple of “stars” from Mountview Alpaca Farm in the week leading up to Christmas. Complete with antlers and tinsel, “Pancake” and “Ed Sheeran”, two of the alpacas, went through the corridors dropping in on the residents. There were smiles of disbelief combined with a comments such as “what is it?” The residents had never seen an alpaca in their facility before and Lifestyle Co-Ordinator Robert Campbell made the day memorable for the residents by including as many of them as possible in the festivities. Visiting families took photos and selfies with the alpacas and a good time was had by all. Jenny Pack from Mountview Alpaca Farm thanked Robert and the Star Gardens General Manager, Annmarie Baigent for making the day such a success! Star Gardens is a fully accredited, boutique residential home for the aged, providing both low and high care along with respite services. Mountview Alpaca Farm can also cater for children’s parties and corporate events. For more information phone Jenny on 0466 464 355.

NEED SHOES?

The Tamborine Mountain SES and the Beaudesert SES groups support the east side of the Scenic Rim in cases of emergency. This includes Tamborine Mountain, Canungra, Tamborine, Lamington National Park and Beaudesert. These groups also offer assistance to other Scenic Rim SES groups in times of need. SES works closely with other service organisations especially the Police Service, the Queensland Ambulance Service and the Rural Fire Service. 2017 was a very busy year for the SES. Volunteers put into action just about everything they train to do. This included numerous occasions when members were called upon to assist search for missing persons, especially in the National Park areas near O’Reilly’s and Binna Burra. They were very busy assisting residents as a result of damage and flooding caused by Cyclone Debbie, where flood boat teams spent hours rescuing people from their roof tops. SES have also assisted many other community organisations throughout the year by providing traffic and parking management. The SES accept that not all volunteers will be available for every emergency. The approach is this - family commitments come first, work second and SES third. The more trained members they have, the more members can be called upon in emergencies. The SES would welcome new members in or near Canungra. If you are active, adventurous, enthusiastic, fit, and willing to give back to your community then joining the SES may be right for you. By joining SES you will make a life changing commitment through actively contributing during disasters and emergencies. You will receive training in a range of disciplines, providing you with real life skills which are used during emergencies, and knowledge that stays with you throughout your life. The Tamborine Mountain SES group will be having an information evening on 23rd January 2018 for people who would like to learn more about the possibility of joining SES. For details and/or to register your interest please contact David Lesslie on 0409 756 873, or Paul Hinchcliffe on 0478 723 194. For emergencies contact SES on 132 500.

School Holiday Fun!… Alpacas in the Vineyard!

O’Reilly’s Canungra Valley Vineyards and Mountview Alpaca Farm have teamed up to give everyone a treat by combining something for the adults and the kids these school holidays. Stop in at the vineyard to visit these fourlegged friends every day of the week. Don’t forget your selfie stick and make a day of it with a gourmet O’Reilly’s picnic basket by the creek or book a table for lunch and wine tasting. Kids can enjoy fantastic kids meals and ice-cream by the cone… Ice cream?... and alpacas? Sounds fun! Mountview Alpaca Farm was forced to move from their 20 year long location near Lamington National Park earlier this year. O’Reilly’s Canungra Valley Vineyard offered their support and the Alpaca Farm is being permanently relocated to the Vineyard. Throughout these school holidays, the alpacas will be at the Vineyard every day and you can feed them for only $3. No entry fees - visit anytime during opening hours. Early in 2018 the new alpaca gift shop will be opened (in time for the 2018 Commonwealth Games).

It has been a long and arduous process organising the relocation and approval for the new alpaca farm and owners Jen and Steve Pack say it will be better than ever once completed. “We will be offering not only the opportunity to purchase alpaca products and feed the alpacas, but also provide a greater alpaca experience with kid’s alpaca parties, and various events,” said Jen.

The Canungra Times - January 2018

“This new location is also 30 minutes closer, so it is much more convenient being less than 10 minutes from Canungra”. Book a table or picnic basket by calling O’Reilly’s on (07) 5543 4011. Open from 8am - 4pm every day, there is no excuse not to pop in and pat some cute alpacas! Alpaca your bags!!

Moving On

From My Window

with Keer Moriarty, Editor

This year, volunteer... Some time ago I spoke to a friend about doing an article on community involvement. I seem to do one of these articles every year or so, and regular readers are probably sick of me harping about it! Shortly after, I received Letters to the Editor opposite from Mel and Nicola, and from Shona. I’ll never forget worrying about not having a Stud Beef Cattle Steward for Canungra Show, when Mel walked into the office and said she wanted to volunteer for the Show Society. Don’t suppose you know about showing cattle? I asked. As it happens she did! She and Nic have been great members of our community and will be missed. From the minute Shona and Paul took over Canungra Hub cafe, locals were keen to support them. Both Shona and Paul have done a huge amount of voluntary work from Canungra Show Society to Moriarty Park and more, and they continue to go above and beyond what most people would do. The support Shona and Paul received in 2017 is a testament to the beautiful heart our community has, but also to the service she and Paul have given. There are so many people quietly doing great things in our town. Whether it is an hour, or many hours, it all makes a difference. So this year, please volunteer. As Ghandi said “The best way to find yourself, is to lose yourself in the service of others”.

Dear Keer, After four wonderful years living in Canungra, the time has sadly come for me and my family to move on. As soldiers and officers of the Australian Defence Force, we move ourselves and our families around Australia fairly regularly - filling job vacancies where required, or specialist roles such as training other members of the ADF. Sometimes, you get a posting that you don’t really like - perhaps to a city that you just don’t gel with, or an area where you just don’t feel at home. In 17 years of service with the Australian Army, I have had my fair share of postings all over the place however I have never felt more at home and completely at one with a place like I do in Canungra. Since moving here from Canberra in 2014, we found a town and a community like no other place we have ever experienced. From the second we arrived in town we were made to feel at home, were welcomed as friends and this led us to willingly embedding ourselves into the community like we had lived here all our lives. Eventually we purchased our house here, and last year welcomed our baby daughter, Georgina, to this place also. Canungra has become a part of us, and we look forward to returning hopefully in the not too distant future. To families moving into the Canungra area in 2018 - particularly the ADF families who will inevitably call this place home for the next few years - I implore you to make the most of your time here by getting involved in anything you can. There is so much to do in this busy little town, and so much going on all the time. You will find the most wonderful, hard working and selfless people who will always get on with the job, however there is always room to lend a helping hand. The Canungra Show Committee, the Owls Soccer Club, Canungra State School, Turning Canungra Pink effort every October, just to name a few. The rewards gained from volunteering your time and help in even the smallest way are far beyond what you put in. Canungra, thank you for making this little town so special. So many of you have become such wonderful friends and family to us, and we cant wait to come back soon and see you all again. Warmest regards, Mel, Nichola and Georgina

New Park Equipment

Dear Editor, Firstly let me thank and congratulate the scenic rim regional council on the installation of the fantastic playground equipment at DJ Smith park, this equipment is wonderful for our local kids and visitors to our lovely little town, two things are missing though, sunshade over the playground to protect from sun damage to the kids and equipment and a safety fence surround the play environment to protect young ones from running out in excitement to the roads. I wonder if the council would consider installing both. Regards, Christopher Duncan

Canungra Community,

I would like to sincerely thank the Canungra community for the incredible support, love and wishes Paul and I have received over the past 12 months. It was the week before Christmas 2016 I was given the news that stopped us in our tracks. I had been diagnosed with Breast Cancer. Totally unexpected - it was the Breast Screen portable screening truck in Beaudesert that I pulled into one day, not for a minute thinking that I would be the next one in eight to be diagnosed in this country. Throughout Chemo, several operations and Radiation that took up the best part of the year, I was blown away by the support given to Paul and me, through messages left for me at Canungra Hub, gifts, flowers, lifts to and from treatment when I just couldn’t, housework done when I arrived home, meals delivered to our home on my arrival home from treatment, scarves donated to me that I have worn all year etc, etc, etc... The week before Christmas this year, I had my Porta Cath removed meaning the end of all treatment! I am on six monthly watch now and feel fantastic (though I had never felt sick as I didn’t know I had it). Our fantastic staff have kept the wheels turning at Canungra Hub in a way Paul and I can never repay. It was their job, but they took it on more than just a job. The continual praise given to the girls Paul and I received over the year certainly took any stress away regarding the business and let us concentrate on the job to be done to get me back on track. Thankyou from the bottom of our hearts. If I could ask everyone reading this to please, have your checks done (men, get your Prostate checked!). Had I not used the facility supplied to our community, the outcome could well have been different. Love and a very healthy, happy 2018 to all xx Shona Kraayvanger

Orchid and Foliage Show

On behalf of Beaudesert Districts Orchid and Foliage Society inc., I’d like to extend our most sincere thanks to you, Keer, for the wonderful promotion that you give to both of our Shows during the year. This year a combined total of over 1 500 people visited our Autumn Show and our Spring Show, many regulars from within the distribution area of your Canungra Times but also many from wider afield, some of whom had visited Canungra for the very first time. The holding of our shows in the Canungra School of Arts Hall has greatly enhanced the profile of our Society and has contributed to a large increase in membership. Even though our Society is not as large in numbers as many of the societies from regions more closely aligned with Brisbane, Logan and the Gold Coast, we are still able to conduct Shows with exhibitions that are equal to those held by such similar societies in an environment that is much more relaxed and pleasant. So thanks to all Canungra residents et al. for your support and trust that we can count on it over the weekend of 10 March, 2018, when our Autumn Show for Orchids and foliage Plants will then be held. Wishing all a most wonderful celebration of the Christmas delighting in the company of those you hold so dear. Appreciatively, Peter Rice – Show Secretary

221 Squadron (City of Gold Coast), Australian Air Force Cadets (Cadets) are now recruiting! Are you looking for an activity outside of the normal school scene for your teenager or maybe you as a parent? Then the Australian Air Force Cadets is for you! Cadets is a youth oriented organisation that is administered and supported by the Royal Australian Air Force. The Cadets started over 75 years ago to encourage youth to gain an interest in aviation and the military. Cadets teaches valuable life skills and will help develop leadership, self-reliance, confidence, teamwork and communication. Some activities include powered flying, field craft, adventure training, firearms safety training, drill and ceremonial parades, air force knowledge, aeromodelling, navigation, local visits to points of interest and gliding to name a few. Activities are conducted through the year and may encompass weekend or week long camps. Cadets aim is to foster qualities to enable cadets to become responsible young adults, who will make a valuable contribution to the community. No matter what career they choose, the Cadets provides a foundation of knowledge and skills that will assist cadets in their future. The cadets in the squadron are always fully supervised by adult staff whose experiences vary from current or ex-serving Defence Force members, police, teachers, nurses, bankers, commercial pilots, labourers and retirees. All of the instructors are well vetted prior to enrolling as a staff member whose passion for the cadet organisation makes the squadron run smoothly with enjoyable results. All cadets must be aged between 13 (or 13 by mid-March 2018) and under 18 years of age, and be an Australian Permanent Resident. 221 Squadron is based at Bravo Company, 25/49 RQR Army Reserve compound which is located at 49 Commercial Drive, Ashmore. Canungra RSL Sub Branch With Col Lee, President, Canungra RSL Sub Branch 2018 will see numerous changes to D J Smith Memorial Park. Firstly, will be the replacement and relocation of the flag poles (Flag Station). The poles will be moved to the opposite side of the memorial and brought into alignment with the memorial, to be completed by ANZAC Day. Next there will be a small wall established to the front of the new flag station. This wall will eventually be dedicated to the animals that served in war, their handlers, riders and veterinarian surgeons and their staff who worked tirelessly to attend to the wounds these animals received. New plaques will be placed around the memorial in memory of those who served after WW2 - Korean War 1950-1953, Malayan Emergency 1950-1960, Borneo Confrontation 1963-1966, Vietnam War 1962-1975, Gulf War 1990-1991, War in Afghanistan 2001-, Iraq War 2003-2009 and Peace Keepers and Peace Makers. Unfortunately, there will also be some blank plaques for the future; plaques we hope will never be used. Finally, new pathways and flower beds will be established, all to be completed by the end of October in readiness for the 100th anniversary of the signing of the Armistice that ended the Great War 1914-18. To achieve our mission in the Memorial Park, we will be asking for different grants. However, grants are not always easy to obtain, in which case we will be relying on a lot of self-help. I am very pleased with and grateful for some of the offers of support we have already received. In conclusion and on behalf of the Canungra RSL Sub-Branch, may I take this opportunity to sincerely thank Keer Moriarty for her kind assistance in 2017. Having a column in the Canungra Times gives us a much-needed means of communicating with our members and the and the citizens of the Canungra area. Thank you, Keer.

Nature’s Gems

Kakadu National Park By Melissa Whitby

The last stop over before I flew home was Kakadu National Park, known for its vast wetlands, ancient landscapes, astounding wildlife and breathtaking indigenous art. My travel companion and I entered the Park from near Pine Creek and began our search for wildlife with Yellow Water wetlands. The floodplains here are home to an array of birdlife and some of the biggest Saltwater Crocodiles I have ever seen. Nearby Gagudju Lodge Cooinda provides a range of accommodation and services. We stayed in the National Park camping area Mardugal. The facilities were excellent and this is a great area to stay if you are on the hunt for the endemic Partridge Pigeon. I did the nearby Gun-gardun walk early one morning and was rewarded with excellent views of the pigeons and other birdlife. It is worth mentioning that a Park Pass must be obtained to visit Kakadu, we obtained ours from the Visitor Centre in Katherine. From Yellow Water, we travelled further into the Park and stopped at Nourlangie, where indigenous rock art can be observed at close quarters. The Bowali Visitor Centre is worth a visit to observe the vision that traditional owners and Parks Australia hope to instil in all the visitors who pass through Kakadu. A visit to Kakadu National Park is not complete without visiting the indigenous rock art site Ubirr. It is best to visit the site in the afternoon to look at the rock art and then wait to see the incredible sunset over the vastness of the ancient landscape. The rock Partridge Pigeon art at Ubirr is truly breathtaking and several of thousands of years old. We were also lucky enough to observe the small resident rock-wallabies known as “Narbaleks”. The Merl Camping Area was a good spot to camp to be close to Ubirr. However, it was also a haven for mosquitoes so be prepared! It is also worth stopping at the Border Store and Cahill’s Crossing. These sites are rich in local history and I guarantee you will be blown away by the size of the Saltwater Crocodiles in this place. Our trip had been an incredible success and the wildlife we had seen and photographed, was nothing short of incredible. It would be one trip that I will remember forever.

Red Starfish Fungus - Aseroe rubra By Susan Cully Pictured above are four stages in the life of a Stinkhorn fungus: the ‘egg’ or encapsulated, sprouting fungus body, the emerging ‘hatchling’ stage, the beautiful, fully formed fruiting body and, just visible in the leaf litter, is the mature, decaying specimen with the stinky, slimy spore mass visible. Stinkhorns form a distinctive, even bizarre, group of fungus. They use odour to ensure spore dispersal. The odour emanated from a foetid, slimy spore mass is attractive to flies in particular. The flies tread upon the slime, moving from location to location, they distribute the spores, thus establishing new colonies of fungus. Even with their terrible odours the Stinkhorn fungi amply repay the observer with their beautiful colours, delicate and fantastic shapes and forms. Interestingly, the slime in some species is toxic to canines and other scavengers attracted to the odour of rotting meat and raw sewage. The toxicity does not develop until the slime is exhibited. On a historic note A.M. Young writes in ‘A Field Guide to the Fungi of Australia’ that “…this species has the honour of being the first fungal record for Australia. It was collected by Labillardiere on 1 May 1792 from the shores of Recherche Bay in Tasmania during the d’Entrecasteaux expedition’s search for the lost explorer, La Perouse. ….the scientific name is meant to indicate the stellate nature of the fungus.” Ref: The Queensland Mycological Society Inc publication ‘Fungi of the Sunshine Coast’

Canungra Heritage - Goat Track By Joyce Libke The road from Canungra to Tamborine Mountain has been known as the ‘Goat Track’ since the early days of settlement on Tamborine Mountain and Canungra - probably with very good reason. The Lahey Brothers (David and Thomas) took a lease over the land between Christie Street and the Canungra Creek in 1884 and set up a saw mill. They harvested the abundant hoop pine, plus other timbers. This mill closed 74 years later in 1938. The Lahey family soon realised that, during the heat of summer, it was much cooler up on Tamborine Mountain. They acquired land at the south end of the Mountain and established a ‘holiday camp’. They built a ‘humpy’ and used tents to accommodate larger groups. At first they walked or rode horses. The houses that they built up there later were destroyed in a bushfire. Extract from David Lahey 1858 – 1942 by Shirley Lahey: “Over a period of years the company built new roads and improved existing ones, often bearing the bulk of the costs. David’s son, Romeo, by now a civil engineer, became very involved in this activity. Romeo surveyed a route from Canungra to South Tamborine Mountain and the firm took over the building of this road when the successful tenderers failed. It was opened at the end of 1919. As well as the South Tamborine Road, which included a distance along the Western Cliffs, the Lahey’s firm, with its own road gang, worked on roads from Canungra to Logan Village and Jimboomba, Tamborine Village to North Tamborine, Canungra along Pine Creek towards Lamington National Park, and they surveyed, cleared and formed the road from Pine Creek to Beechmont. Later on [1934] came the Cainbable Road that is now called Lamingtom National Park Road.” Interestingly, today the mountain roads are still where Romeo surveyed them with only one or two small exceptions. I would think it was a much safer road 50 or more years ago because, being a steep, dirt, single lane road, it looked and felt dangerous - prompting all drivers to be cautious.

News from St Luke’s By Di Ayscough Christmas is over and the New Year is here. Did you survive the days? Sadly, as Keer mentioned in her Editorial in the December issue, Christmas can be a very difficult day for many people. I do hope each of you found some degree of happiness, whether it was the taste of turkey, a special gift, time with family and friends, or just a quiet moment to reminisce about the good times in your life. It is now time to move on and look to the future. Do you have the coming year mapped out, or will you take it as it comes? Sometimes it is good to have things to look forward to, or to break up the year. Whatever you have planned, or hope for, there are also many things to be thankful for. In particular we at St Luke’s being part of the community of Canungra, are thankful for the people who serve us and provide services within the township. Most importantly I would like to thank Keer for this newspaper. How much time is put in each month to produce the paper? None of us could ever begin to imagine what goes on behind the scenes. Thank you Keer for all your dedicated work, and providing the community with so much information. In the same way everyone is involved in something, and often your personal contribution may not be acknowledged but personally, I always think, God knows. I especially refer to our recent street stall for St Luke’s. Everyone’s contribution was gratefully received and added to the success of the stall. Thank you to everyone who stopped and purchased our items. Without the community support we would not have had such a success. Aren’t we fortunate to be part of this community?
