The Canungra Times - January 2020

Christmas Wish Comes True

It was the night before Christmas and all the region wanted was rain, and this time Santa delivered. Over Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, Canungra, Beechmont, Lower Beechmont and Tamborine Village reported falls of up to 70mm. Illinbah resident, Julie Hughes, said they had over 70mm. “We have four tanks three-quarters full, the big one is about half full. Thankful for answered prayer,” said Julie. At Sarabah, Virginia Duncan said they had 40mm, and over 50 in town. “A real Christmas blessing,” she said. Illinbah resident, Maxine White said it was the best Christmas Eve and morning possible. “Thunder, rain ... the cracks in the dirt are wet this morning. We have mud! Not enough to revive the creek but enough to grow some pick for the cows. We are feeling so very grateful this morning,” she said. The rainfall was also enough to provide some much needed flow in Canungra Creek. Not all residents were so fortunate, with some buying water days after the rainfall. More rain is needed throughout the region and further water restrictions will come into place for Scenic Rim towns on 5th January. Water restrictions remain in place for Canungra township and further significant rainfall will be needed before the water treatment plant can be reopened. The rainfall and cooler temperatures also enticed tourists back to Canungra.

Morgan, Paula, and Ciarn Nihot from Southport enjoying a day out in Canungra.

Paula Nihot and her family travelled from Southport to enjoy some family time at Canungra Creek. “It looks so green after the rain and it is great for the kids to be able to enjoy the Creek,” said Paula. Ray Hickson, who records the Wonglepong rainfall for Canungra Times, provided rainfall averages for the past 21 years, against rainfall from 2019. These figures include 2002 when Canungra Creek last stopped flowing. At that time, Canungra was on water restrictions for several months prior to having water tankered in to fill the Appel Street reservoir.

Water Restrictions for More Scenic Rim Towns

Water restrictions have been introduced to more towns in the Scenic Rim, with prolonged dry weather continuing to impact local water sources. Urban Utilities advised water restrictions are in place in Beaudesert, Boonah, Kalbar, Mt Alford, Aratula, Rathdowney and Kooralbyn from 12.01am on Sunday 5th January. As the hot dry weather continues and water usage remains high in the region, water restrictions are being introduced early to help preserve water storages over summer. Water restrictions were implemented in Canungra on Saturday 30th November. Urban Utilities spokesperson, Michelle Cull, said under the water restrictions residents are being encouraged to reduce their water usage to 140 litres per person per day. “We’re urging everyone to save water in any way they can. If we all do our bit to save a little now, it could make a big difference down the track,” she said. “We’re asking people to adhere to the water restrictions as a minimum and appreciate the efforts of people in the community who are already doing more than this.” Beaudesert, Boonah, Kalbar, Mt Alford, Aratula, Rathdowney, Kooralbyn and

Canungra are not connected to the SEQ Water Grid and rely on local water sources. South East Queensland’s bulk water supplier, Seqwater is continuing to tanker drinking water to Canungra, where the water treatment plant remains offline until significant rainfall occurs. Below is a summary of the water sources for towns not connected to the SEQ Water Grid:

The water restrictions, which have been developed in conjunction with Seqwater, will apply to residential and non-residential properties as well as water being drawn from Urban Utilities tanker filling stations in these areas.

“The restrictions are designed to limit outdoor water use and include a total ban on sprinklers, and an odds and evens schedule for watering and outdoor cleaning,” Ms Cull said. “We also recommend residents check for concealed underground leaks on their property, by turning off all taps for an hour and checking the water meter. If the meter registers water consumption, then there might be a concealed leak.” Information about the restrictions and water saving tips are also available on our website www.urbanutilities.com.au/ restrictions As the drought continues, the need to restrict or close tanker filling stations will be assessed according to the water supply disruption and drought response plans for each off-grid supply scheme. The Canungra tanker filling station remains closed until further notice, with the closest filling station located at Helen Street, Beaudesert. The temporary filling point in Coburg Street, Canungra will also remain in place for the immediate future to assist residential customers not connected to the town supply. It is open from 8am to 6pm every day. *As at December 18, 2019. For the latest dam levels, visit www.seqwater.com.au/dam-levels

Canungra in World Muay Thai Titles

Canungra may be home to a World Muay Thai Champion after the World Championships in March 2020. Four fighters from Canungra Muay Thai Club will attend the World Titles in Pattaya, Thailand on and their coach, David Torrens, says all of them have a good chance of winning. David has also been selected as one of the Coaches for the Australian WMO/SIAM Muay Thai Team and is looking forward to getting the best out of his fighters. The four fighters selected are Josh Torrens, Jared Clift, Jesse Jones and Asiya Hickey. Jared and Asiya are both ranked number two in their respective divisions in Australia. David said Josh has won about five Australian titles and Jesse is currently the Australian champion. It will be the third time Josh has competed at the World Championships David said he took over coaching at the Club about three years ago when the head coach, Jamie Hammer retired. This was around the time that he and his wife Rebecca bought Canungra Hardware and opened the training facility behind the hardware shop. This has since been moved to a building behind My Country Escape.

Four fighters from Canungra Muay Thai have been selected to compete in the World Championships

The move into town has made training and access for students easier and has seen the Club grow to approximately 30 fighters. They train hard and can often be seen pounding the streets around Canungra on training runs. For a small club to have four fighters selected to compete at the World Championships is quite a feat, the only other Club

sending that many fighters has a membership of 300. David said the trip to the World Championships will be self funded so the Club will be doing a lot of fundraising over the next two months and will be looking for sponsorship to subsidise costs for families. For more information about Canungra Muay Thai contact David on 5543 4780.

Scenic Rim Tourism Recovery Package

Scenic Rim, Southern Downs, Sunshine Coast and Noosa will share in a $6 million tourism recovery package, jointly funded by the Federal and State Governments under the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements. Federal Member for Wright, Scott Buchholz said some areas in the Scenic Rim were struggling to attract visitors after the bushfires and that was having an impact on small businesses. “Tourism, specifically eco-tourism is a large part of our local economy. As a result of the recent fires visitor numbers have dropped and local businesses are feeling the pinch.” “Many cafes, restaurants, boutiques, adventure sport providers and accommodation hubs have seen bookings drop, customer numbers fall and cash flow down.” “The impact of a bushfire is horrible and sadly the pain does not stop once the fire front has passed or been contained.” “Towns and villages throughout the region that are reliant on tourism have been impacted, including Canungra, Beechmont, Boonah, Rathdowney and Tamborine Mountain.”

Federal Member for Wright Scott Buchholz and Cr Virginia West, at the Headmasters Cafe at Beechmont

Scott said it was important Government took the necessary steps to help restore activity in the local tourism sector. “We’re helping to rebuild confidence in local tourism.” “This is some of the most beautiful country in the world. An investment of $1

We’ve heard from locals that they’re feeling the brunt of lower tourism numbers. This package will help restore our local tourism sector and see business thrive again,” he said.

Rates Deferred for Bushfire Affected

Young Driver Education Night

The Young Driver Education Night was held at Canungra Bowls Club on 5th December 2019. The night was organised by the Local Ambulance Committee and supported by Canungra & District Community Bank. Representatives from Emergency Services and speakers from the local community addressed the teenagers who attended about the impact that small decisions can have on your life and those around you. A driving simulator was available for the first time. During the simulation, each ‘driver’ was handed a mobile phone so they could see the impact that driving while using a mobile phone can have. The ‘drivers’ were all asked to read and respond to texts on the phone while using the simulator under different conditions. Local Ambulance Committee spokesperson thanked all participants. “Every year this event seems to become more educational and we really encourage up and coming L and P platers and their parents and guardians to come along - it’s only an hour of your time and something might sink in,” she said.

Scenic Rim Regional Council recently resolved to grant a temporary rate relief to residential and local businesses still suffering hardship in the wake of the recent bushfire events. Mayor Greg Christensen said Council voted to extend the rates deferment period until the end of next year for affected ratepayers that fit the criteria. “We recognise the bushfires have caused impacts to our communities and both rural and commercial businesses and this will allow those suffering hardship to have some breathing space, arrange insurance matters and get back on their feet,” said Cr Christensen. “Eligible ratepayers can defer their rates payments without interest until 31st December 2020. “If your property, or the land you usually make revenue from, has been physically impacted by the fires then Council encourages you to call Council’s Rates Department on 07 5540 5111 to discuss potential eligibility.” A similar option may be available for primary producers under hardship from drought. An Application For Rate Relief on the grounds of hardship for drought affected properties can be downloaded from Council’s web site https://www.scenicrim.qld.gov. au/downloads/file/2486/application-for-rate-reliefdrought-affected-properties.

Helping to understand Insurance

In the branch, we often have conversations based around insurance and we’ve realised that this is a topic that can be really confusing for everyone. Most of us have had policies in place for years and unfortunately fall into the trap of renewing it without checking that it still suits our needs. Even those of us who shop around for the best policy before renewing, probably don’t understand the finer details of what is in the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS). We’ve decided that it’s time to hold an Insurance Information Night with an IAG Insurance representative attending to help understand insurances. At 6pm on Wednesday 12th of February, we’ll be hosting an Insurance Information evening at the Branch and everyone is welcome. THIS WILL NOT BE A SALES NIGHT! This is our way of simply helping our community to understand their insurance policies. Community members can bring their existing policies with them and we can offer information on how to read the PDS, or we can check if you are covered for a certain event that you are concerned about. You may want to know about Travel Insurance for your upcoming holiday or about House and Contents Insurance for your home. You may have questions surrounding your or your children’s electronic devices and whether or not they are covered away from the home…or you may simply want to make sure that you are getting value for money. Come along and speak with an Industry expert, no strings attached. Can’t make it on the night, but have questions about insurance? Call in to the branch, or give us a call as we’d love to help.

Canungra Awarded Highest Fundraising Team

Cancer Council Queensland took the opportunity to say a special thank you to its volunteers, committee members, and ambassadors in the Gold Coast area on 2nd December 2019. Over 15 volunteers were treated to a morning tea at the Hilton Hotel, with Cancer Council Queensland executive Joanne Aitken in attendance. Cancer Council Queensland CEO Ms Chris McMillan said the Gold Coast community put in an amazing fundraising effort across the year. “All the fundraising that has been undertaken right across the region during 2019 is simply fantastic,” Ms McMillan said. “The Relay For Life events were great, Daffodil Day saw the entire Gold Coast region turn yellow, Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea was a big hit, and the Walk for Women’s Cancers event had a great turn out. “I’d like to give a special mention to Canungra for Turning Canungra Pink; and Beaudesert for turning blue for Prostate Cancer Awareness Month. The Beaudesert Branch was awarded Highest Fundraising Branch, while the Canungra Chamber of Commerce (Turning

Deborah Frugtniet was named the Highest Fundraising Individual, and the Jimboomba Branch received the Spirit of Challenge award for actively promoting, supporting and fundraising. “The work of our volunteers makes a huge difference in Cancer Council Queensland’s ability to deliver support to those in the

community impacted by cancer,” said Ms McMillan. “I’d also like to thank all of the new volunteers who have joined us in 2019 and invite you to continue to make a difference in the lives of Queenslanders impacted by cancer in the new year.” Turning Canungra Pink raised over $45,000 in 2019, half of which will be donated to Cancer Council Queensland.

Who is in Control of

In December, a Queensland Government proposal to require farmers to pay for and install metering equipment on pumps in rivers and creeks met with considerable opposition from the State Liberal Opposition and farmer’s groups. The 20 page document titled Proposal for Strengthening Non-Urban Water Measurement says water entitlement holders will bear all costs relating to installing new meters. Government papers show that farmers would be forced to install meters at a cost ranging from $8,000 to $12,000 for a small point to $90,000 to $100,000 for the largest pumping point. Natural Resources Minister Anthony Lynham has stated that no farmer will pay for new water meters during the current drought. Member for Scenic Rim, Jon Krause said the proposal should be dismissed immediately. “I have had people on the land break down in my office because of the drought - this drought is cruel, the fires add another layer of misery, and now this? It might be just a proposal, but when people are using every last cent to try and save their farms, even the

prospect of this type of outrageous charge is the last thing they need right now. Even talk of another tax, and that’s precisely what this would be, is cruel and a disgraceful thing to be “consulting” about at this point.” The water meters have been proposed as part of the Rural Water Management Program to strengthening the ways Queensland’s water resources are managed, measured and reported. In the Scenic Rim, potable (drinking) water is managed by Seqwater, then sold to consumers by Urban Utilities. The Department of Natural Resources, Mines and Energy (DNRME) is responsible for irrigation licences and any water being pumped from waterways, such as Canungra Creek, Coomera River and Biddaddaba Creek. A Water Advisory Committee (previously known as the Water Board) operates in Canungra and is made up of a volunteer board of landholders. The Committee works with landholders to manage the waterways and will at times ask irrigators to restrict their water usage. The Committee began advising landholders of restrictions in November 2019, however their ability to do this has been

Our Water?

hampered as they have been unable to access accurate records of irrigation licences in the area and contact details for landholders. These were previously provided by the State Government departments. At the time the Committee began to implement restrictions, they also advised Seqwater that they believed water restrictions were needed. A spokesperson for DNRME said the Department is aware that the Water Advisory Committee in the area is working within the community to restrict the take of water from Canungra Creek. “This is on a voluntary basis as the Water Advisory Committee has no statutory powers,” the spokesperson said. “Individuals, irrigators and organisations’ details relating to water entitlements are commercial in confidence,” he said. Members of the community who have information relating to the illegal taking or pumping of water should contact the Department. Landholders who would like to contact the Canungra Creek Water Advisory Committee should contact the Secretary, Michael Fraser on 0408 778 135.

Trainees Assist In Environmental Restoration

Eleven trainees have graduated from the Conservation and Land Management (CaLM) program after helping restore the historic Binna Burra Lodge campgrounds. The graduates, who received a Certificate One qualification in Conservation and Land Management, are supported by the State Government and Belong and worked on environmental projects across the Scenic Rim. Their initial work, which began mid2019, was undertaking maintenance of previous cohorts’ plantings, including watering, staking, weeding, and prepping for further works. However, after September’s devastating bushfires, the team were diverted to assist in the restoration of the campgrounds at Binna Burra Lodge. Council’s One Million Tree program provided 3000 native plants for the revegetation of the area. Divisional Councillor Virginia West said the entire group had been dedicated to assisting the community of Binna Burra after the historic loss. “This program will really help Binna Burra get back on their feet when the road is re-opened,” she said. “They have put in tremendous efforts at Fassifern Reserve, Il-bogan, Riverbend, Pioneer Reserve at Beechmont, Yellow Pinch Reserve at the base of Mount Barney and the Shelf Road Reserve.

Belong Graduates excited to finish their 18 week program.

“Each site presented different challenges however, at the same time, they were all working to achieve common goals throughout the region.” Belong Employment and Training Manager, Tim Early, said the partnership with Council has grown from strength to strength, through a passion for the environment and helping locals with their employability skills. “This is our third Skilling Queenslanders for Work project partnering with Council, through an 18 week schedule of work,” he said.

Carols in the Park was held at D J Smith Park this year, with the event providing the opportunity for the town to formally thank members of the Canungra Rural Fire Brigade for their service to the community. Cr Virginia West and Moriarty Park President Bren Dalby presented Canungra Rural Fire Brigade members Steve Moriarty and Troy Livingstone with a gift for the Brigade on behalf of the community. Talented Beaudesert based community choir, A-Choired Taste entertained the crowd with Christmas Carols and songs and the Canungra State School students also performed and some also joined in with A-Choired Taste’s performance. Local building company, Smith & Sons gave out blow up hammers to the children which were very popular, but couldn’t quite match the frenzy of Santa’s arrival!

WATER RESTRICTIONS A big thank you to the Canungra community. Your ongoing water-saving efforts are making a big difference! Prior to the restrictions, water use in Canungra peaked at around 270 litres per person per day. Now it’s sitting at around 130 litres per person per day. Keep up the good work this summer! For more water-saving tips and the full list of water restrictions, go to urbanutilities.com.au/restrictions

Developed in conjunction with bulk water supplier Seqwater, water restrictions now apply to all residents and businesses in Beaudesert, Boonah, Kalbar, Mt Alford, Aratula, Rathdowney, Kooralbyn and Canungra. Water restrictions do not apply in Warrill View, Peak Crossing and Harrisville as they are connected to the SEQ Water Grid.

From My Window

with Keer Moriarty, Editor

Bring on 2020... We seem to need a ‘new start’ from time to time, and what better than the start of not only a new year, but a new decade? After some distressing events around Australia during 2019, many people will be looking forward to 2020 with renewed hope for the future. Being honest, I’m a little hesitant this year, I’m going in knowing that there were a lot of changes in 2019 and more that will be made in 2020. Change can be a lot of things - good, exciting, scary or all at once! There’s been a weird feeling in the community over the past few months, and a weird feeling altogether in Australia - although that could just be me spending too much time on social media. I want to go into 2020 with some hope, some good decisions and some positivity for the future. Last year, I saw and heard some incredibly sad things, some of these brought out anger and strength that I didn’t know I had. I also saw and heard some of the kindest acts of generosity and selflessness I’ve seen, people from around the globe helping our community and many more throughout Australia. This year, I hope to focus more on that, on helping the community and the positive effects that this can bring. Best wishes for a safe and happy New Year.

Able Australia Helping Out

Able Australia is one of many not for profit organisations helping out families in times of need. Located in the Caddies Community Centre at Jimboomba, they offer a range of services to support the community. Community Transport Manager, Edmund McMahon said without their volunteers they could not function and are forever grateful for the people who give up their time to help. “Every activity on site is reinforced by our volunteers,” said Edmund, “They are our backbone. Volunteers drive our vehicles, staff our food pantry, and assess emergency relief - a program providing relief to people in financial distress whether it be food parcels, clothing, prescriptions or an ear to listen. They cook and deliver Meals On Wheels, plus in centre meals.” Social groups such as Tune Up Tuesdays and Jimboomba Jolly’s are also run in the centre. Edmund said these groups are provided to reduce social isolation for seniors in the area. Able Australia’s transport department is always busy taking patients daily to and from various hospitals within Logan, Brisbane and Gold Coast, as well as offering shopping trips and social outings. Edmund said the need for Able Australia’s services has increased dramatically over the past 12 months, especially within growing areas such as Canungra, Beaudesert, Flagstone and Jimboomba.

Artwork Tells Scenic Rim’s Stories

A feature artwork telling the Scenic Rim’s stories has been unveiled as a spectacular entry statement to Beaudesert. The installation, near Waters Creek Bridge on the Mount Lindesay Highway, is the latest chapter in the Scenic Rim Story Marker Project that has seen the placement of public art, providing a sense of place for locals and visitors alike, at Canungra and Tamborine Mountain. Scenic Rim Mayor Greg Christensen said the landmark artwork incorporated all elements of the Scenic Rim’s indigenous, environmental, colonial and contemporary heritage. “The artwork comprises four 2.4-metre panels that were fabricated by local steel sculptor Colleen Lavender, adapting images from eight local artists each with their own Scenic Rim story,” he said. Colleen Lavender was moved to see the artwork finally unveiled. “Working on this project was the best five months of my life, even though there were two cyclones and a heatwave while it was being produced,” she said. “I’m grateful to the team at Council for giving me this opportunity to do something unique for the region that tells the stories of our people and our history.” The Scenic Rim Arts Reference Group, chaired by Cr Nadia O’Carroll,

Local steel artist Colleen Lavender at the new entrance display with artist Aunty Ruby Sims, Mayor Greg Christensen, Councillor Nadia O’Carroll, artist Alisa Rolley and artist Krystie Smoothy.

recommended that the pieces be installed as a single work and numerous sites were considered for their location. “We wanted to make sure the site was on a natural elevation to showcase the artwork, had easy access to electricity for the lighting, which will be installed shortly, and importantly to ensure no vegetation needed to be removed,” she said. The artwork at Beaudesert will be retrofitted with LED lighting and has involved several artists in telling the region’s stories,

including Tamlyn Geiger’s ‘The Pine Trees of Canungra. “We are so grateful to the artists for sharing their creative skills to tell the wonderful stories of our region. “This artwork is part of our continuing journey to create a route which engages travellers with all our towns and villages in a thought-provoking way as they explore the beautiful Scenic Rim, and to provide locals with a greater sense of community connection,” Cr Christensen said.

A Thirst For Art

An artwork by the steel artist who designed the Scenic Rim entry statement is under consideration by Scenic Rim Regional Council to be donated and displayed in Canungra. Monique Morcus purchased the stunning steel horse head ‘Thirst’ from artist Colleen Lavender of Colchameleon Design at the Canungra Campout in October 2019. Colleen was supporting the cancer fundraiser event by displaying her artwork. “I loved it as soon as I saw it,” said Monique, “This beautiful piece would represent the recent bushfires we have experienced, particularly with the evacuation of horses and livestock which I was heavily involved in, along with the drought we are experiencing.” “I bought it with the intention of donating it to the town.” Monique Morcus with recycled steel artwork Monique sent a request to Council ‘Thirst’ by Colleen Lavender. just prior to Christmas to ask that they consider the permanent installation of the piece, which she would ideally like displayed near the Canungra Visitor Information Centre. “I believe it will be an asset to our town, community and visitors to Canungra,” said Monique. Artist Colleen Lavender said the artwork holds a special place for her. “Every now and then I make a piece that I love in every way! ‘Thirst’ has been one of those pieces, people are really getting the feelings I was trying to evoke,” said Colleen. ‘Thirst’ is made from recycled metals from various events and projects including the Commonwealth games, Fire on Top of Mountains Project, Arts Ablaze and Open Studios. Monique said she understands that Council will need some time to consider the request for the installation and will need to take into account a suitable site and maintenance of the artwork over a number of years. She is hoping for a positive response to the request.

Hampers for Farmers

Canungra State School students from Grade 6 put together 18 Christmas hampers for distribution to local farmers who have been affected by bushfires and drought. School Chaplain Katie helped the students to organise the hampers and arranged distribution through Canungra Hardware. Katie said the students chose the project they wanted to assist with and decided that the most affected in the community would be farmers with animals that still needed to be fed following bushfires and drought conditions. The hampers were greatly appreciated by those who received them.

Free Breast Screening

More than three hundred women are expected to visit the BreastScreen Queensland mobile service which is visiting the Vonda Youngman Community Centre from 13th to the 30th January 2020. The mobile unit will help to increase access to free breast screening for local women in a bid to save more lives by detecting breast cancer at an early stage, when it is easier to treat. BreastScreen Queensland senior health promotion officer Julia Foreman says unfortunately many women delay this potentially life-saving health check. “Just over half of local 50 to 74-year-old women participate in the free breast screening program,” Ms Foreman said. “It would be great to see more women taking advantage of this free health check. We would like to encourage local women to make time for their breast screen and book in early,” she said. “The earlier breast cancer is found, the better the outcomes for women and long-term survival.” Breast cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed in Australian women. It is estimated one in seven women will be diagnosed with breast cancer by their 85th birthday, most of whom will have no family history of this disease. Having a screening mammogram every two years is recommended for women aged between 50 and 74 years as the evidence of benefit is strongest for this age group. Women in their 40s and aged 75 and older can attend free screening at BreastScreen Queensland services. A doctor’s referral is not required. To book an appointment, eligible women can visit breastscreen. qld.gov.au or call 132 050.

Canungra Times Online

The Canungra Times launched a new web site in December, giving readers the opportunity to keep up to date with all the latest news, sport and events throughout the month. Editor, Keer Moriarty said the new web site was much needed, but the reporting during the recent bushfires was the catalyst for the update. “During the bushfires, I needed to update several times a day, which in print is just not possible,” said Keer. “I used Facebook as the main way to communicate with readers during that time, but not everyone is on Facebook so the need to have a more flexible web site was obvious.” Stories will be published to the web site during the month, but the content of the printed monthly paper will differ from the web site. “Some stories might not make it to the paper, and some of the stories in the paper might not make it to the web site, it will just depend on what is most appropriate for that form of media.” One of the advantages of the web site and Facebook is being able to post a number of photographs from an event, where I might not always have space in the printed paper for all the photos,” she said. Keer said she remains committed to the monthly printed publication of The Canungra Times. “I still think people like to be able to read a local newspaper. I know the trend for larger metropolitan papers is that their readership is declining because people get their news online or from television, but smaller independent newspapers and magazines are thriving. I believe those small independent newspapers are important to ensure communities have a voice.”

Ask the Physio -

As we are suffering from a chronic water shortage in Canungra, we should be particularly mindful of the importance of hydration for our bodies to stay healthy. Up to 60% of your body is comprised of water. Your brain is composed of 95% water; your blood is 82% water; your lungs are nearly 90% water. Even your bones contain about 30% water. Water is also the single most critical nutrient for health, growth, and development. It is not only the most abundant component of your body but also the most important nutrient. Water is critical to the balance of all of your body’s systems. How important is this balance? A 2% drop in body water can cause a small but critical shrinkage of your brain, which can impair neuromuscular coordination, decrease concentration, and slow your thinking. Dehydration can also reduce endurance, decrease strength, cause cramping, and slow muscular response. Approximately 75% of Australians have mild, chronic dehydration. This is alarming since proper hydration is required for maintaining healthy blood flow, proper kidney

function, proper sodium/potassium /electrolyte balance and proper digestive functions. Water is also extremely important for your joints because synovial fluid contains water. If you become dehydrated, less synovial fluid is available to protect your joints so they can degenerate. In order to move and flex your muscles, you need water. If your body is dehydrated, your muscles will be deprived of electrolytes and easily cramp. Since muscles are controlled by nerves, without the proper

water and electrolyte balance, muscle strength and control will also be impaired. It is essential that you stay hydrated if you want to build or repair muscle and experience optimal performance in your day-today life. So while water is scarce we need to prioritise it and drink it in its purest form for optimal hydration. While the temperatures soar we sweat more and therefore lose water with electrolytes so we need to frequently replenish our body’s supply with a healthy Sea Salt together with pure filtered water.

Toyota HiAce Test & Review

Reviewed by Lee McKenzie-McKinnon, Editor, carandbikenews.com.au When Toyota find a vehicle that works they stick with it for a long time and that is true when it comes to the HiAce van. 2019 saw the first all-new platform for the HiAce in 15 years and it is really a completely new vehicle from the ground up. There is a new chassis, engines, safety, and a host of new technology with the old cab-over-engine format now gone and a longer but more dynamic semi-bonneted design stepping in. Fitted with either a 3.5-litre V6 petrol or a 2.8-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel (tested) which offers drivers 450Nm and 130kW with a combined 8.2L/100km of fuel usage means there is better bang for buck. The six-speed manual is a smooth transmission. The diesel has a rev-matching feature making downshifting even easier. The new HiAce offers something rather different when you get behind the wheel, the feel of driving a car while still doing all the work you need. Drivers are spoilt when it comes to driver assist and convenience features. Cruise control is standard as is a speed limiter and speed sign recognition. The list continues with hill start assist, auto headlights and

Toyota HiAce

high-beam assist and satellite navigation is standard across the range. This is enhanced with SUNA live traffic information. The smart new instrumentation with 4.2-inch multi-information display to the 7.0-inch multimedia unit, to the centrally located air-conditioning dials, all the controls are well within reach. At the working end, the load bay, Toyota HiAce is now equipped with twin side sliding doors as standard. The larger side apertures in SLWB models accommodate a standard Australian pallet. Despite the increase in length and width and the decrease in the length of the LWB Van’s cargo bay (by 470mm) the maximum

The Canungra Times - January 2020

payloads range from 885kg for the LWB Crew Van to 1080kg for the LWB Van, 1075kg for the SLWB Commuter, and 1295kg for the SLWB Van. These haven’t changed from the previous model. That tech also encompasses a major boost in safety, with the new Toyota HiAce achieving a full five-star ANCAP safety rating. It’s the first Toyota van to do so. The new nine-model line-up, spanning LWB Van, LWB Crew Van, SLWB Van and SLWB Commuter models, arrives at an average price rise of just under $4,000. Price: $38,640-$70,140 (plus on-road costs. Canungra’s History - Canungra Bowls Club

The Canungra Bowls Club has a long history in Canungra. The Club celebrated their 60th Anniversary on 6th October 2013 and remains one of the town’s longest running sporting organisations. The Canungra Bowls Club owes its existence to the enthusiasm of Ken Cameron, Frank Murray and Ken Reilly who, along with other Canungra people were introduced to the game of bowls at Tamborine Mountain Bowls Club. Much interest grew amongst the Canungra players and Beechmont locals also took up the game so it was decided to form a club at Canungra. A great deal of voluntary labour was involved before the green became a reality. Despite the conflicting financial advice of the local bank manager at the time, the members of the club raised the finances by donating whatever they could invest. George Mahony, Ken Curtis and Jesse Daniels pulled stumps out and prepared the ground for the green which opened in 1953. The club house was a tiny cottage on the property and it served until replaced by a larger building in 1966. According to historical records, Jasper Jerome was President of the men’s club and Madge Page was President of the ladies at the time of the opening. Various trophies were donated by members including the Can Tam Shield donated by Jesse Daniels and the Jerome Cup by Jasper Jerome. The piano was donated by Jasper Jerome, and later returned to Vicky Rayner (nee Jerome). Club members Ray Hickson said the board and discs pictured were used at Canungra Bowls Club years ago and have the names

Restaurant Review

You Don’t Need to Go to Japan! By The Full-Bodied Foodie There is no need to leave town to for great Japanese food - Ginja Ninja Sushi Cafe & Bar in the heart of Canungra is as far as you need to go. Owners Josh and Danielle Kennedy have made great use of the space at Ginja Ninja and created a cool, welcoming Japanese kitchen with food that will not disappoint. The menu ranges from sushi through to delicious bowls to suit most tastes and dietary requirements. Vegans, gluten free and dairy free are all easily catered for. Sushi is freshly made each day on the premises and can be ordered from the cabinet or made to order by the chef. When they first opened, Josh and Danielle said they wanted healthy, fresh food, and that is exactly what they provide. I was fortunate to get a seat at the last ‘Saturday session’ where popular local duo The Wingmen were playing. I have to say, whoever thought of having live music there is a genius. The atmosphere was great - Ginja Ninja is a funky, cool place at any time (struggling to work out what the ‘in’ words are to use these days - too old for this gig) but on a summer’s evening after the local Christmas Carols there was no where better to be. Ginja Ninja is licenced and has a range of quality craft beer, wines and spirits, as well as James Squire Orchard Crush Cider and Matso Ginger Beer. The Brown Brothers Prosecco is a great accompaniment to any of the dishes on the menu (so I’m told), They can do all meals as takeaway or dine in and also have an interesting choice of desserts. Ginja Ninja Sushi Cafe and Bar are located at 28 Christie Street, Canungra and open seven days for lunch, dinner and coffee until 8pm. For bookings or more information phone 5543 5198 or visit their Facebook page.

Happy New Year Happy New Year to you all. I hope you have had a relaxing and restful break over the Christmas and New Year period and are ready to face the excitement and challenges of 2020. We hope 2020 will not be quite as eventful for Canungra and Beechmont as the previous year was.

Federal Government Inquiry Into Bushfires The Australian Government has launched an inquiry into the bushfires that occurred in numerous parts of Australia last year to investigate past and current vegetation and land management policy, practises and legislation and the impact on the intensity and frequency of bushfires. Submissions are requested before the inquiry date of 28th February and all details can be found on www.aph.gov.au.

Climate Change Statement Of Intent At the final 2019 Ordinary Meeting, the Mayor tabled a Mayoral Minute which was supported unanimously by Councillors. This was that Council proceed with a Statement of Intent regarding Climate Change at the first Ordinary Meeting in January 2020. Once developed, this Statement of Intent will be read in conjunction with the Scenic Rim Community Plan 2011-2026 (revised 2018). This document underpins all activities of Council and aims to ensure the long-term economic, social and environmental sustainability of our region. Our communities share wide and varying views on the subject of Climate Change and they are all to be respected. Given that a number of activities are already incorporated into Council business and projects, it is important to strengthen our responses into the future.

New Flexible Mobile Library Services As residents will be aware, the large mobile library bus has come to the end of its useful life, hence the service was not always as reliable as it should have been. In early 2020, a new multi-purpose van will “hit the road” providing extended library services with mobile WI-FI, laptops, printers as well as books and magazines to our smaller towns and villages. The smaller van will be much more versatile and can be driven by C Class drivers unlike the previous trailer. I thank all those community members who contributed to the community consultation process during this progression and we welcome your feedback as the new service rolls out.

Canungra Town Water At the time of writing this column, Urban Utilities are still trucking in water to town on a daily basis for rural users to fill a tank, down by the off-leash dog park on Coburg Road. This service will continue until further notice. Thank you to all residents who are being water-wise around their homes, as this drought continues throughout South-East Queensland. Don’t forget to put a bowl of water out for the small wildlife creatures and birds.

Contact Me I am always available to talk with residents on 5540 5403 or 0407 630 052 or by email virginia.w@scenicrim.qld.gov.au I am at the Canungra Library on the second Saturday of the month from 9am till 11am to talk with residents. The next Saturday will be 8th February. Page 30

Canungra RSL Sub-Branch News By Col Lee, President, Canungra RSL Sub Branch

Canungra Services Club The ‘RSL’ has closed! What? Confused? No, the Canungra Services Club managed and leased by the Nerang RSL & Memorial Club has closed. The building commonly known as the ‘RSL’ is owned by the Canungra RSL SubBranch and was leased to the Nerang RSL & Memorial Club. Unfortunately, the venture was not profitable and so Nerang have withdrawn early from the 10-year occupancy. The building is now locked up and will remain that way until further notice. If someone wishes to lease/buy the building, then all offers should be directed to the Sub-Branch and each will be considered accordingly. All enquiries can be directed to the Secretary, Jacqui Hill or myself by email to canungrarslsubbranch@ outlook.com. The Canungra RSL Sub-Branch will conduct its normal duties as per the SubBranch Constitution. ANZAC Day Dawn and Mid-Mornings Services, Vietnam and Veterans Day, and Remembrance Day Services will remain the most important part of the Sub-Branches annual activities. Sub-Branch members will meet early in January 2020 for an extra ordinary general meeting to discuss the future and way ahead

Canungra Services Club has closed but the building remains the property of the Canungra RSL Sub Branch

of the Sub-Branch. Possibly the most important decisions ever to be discussed and voted on will come out of this year’s AGM.

New Look Class Six: The new Year 6 Students at the Canungra State School will be returning to school later this month and the Canungra RSL SubBranch wishes them the very best for this their last year before heading off to High School. The Sub-Branch looks forward to working with them; in particular, the new School Captains, Amy Consterdine and Cooper Crook, on ANZAC Day and Remembrance Day this year.

We encourage all students to participate in these important ceremonial activities. If the students have ideas on how they can become more involved, please communicate to me through Canungra State School Deputy Principal, Ms Cindi Dare.

2020 Regardless of the outcome of the upcoming Canungra RSL Sub-Branch AGM this year, the citizens of Canungra and surrounding area can rest assured that your SubBranch will not let you down with its ceremonial remembrance services. We look forward to seeing you at the ANZAC Day Service, our first event of this year.

Australia’s birdlife is some of the most unique and beautiful in the world. One group that stands out is the Honeyeaters. With at least 50 species identified in Australia, it is inevitable that birdwatchers will see several species easily in just one morning of casual bird watching. One honeyeater species, which occurs in South-east Queensland, is the Yellow-faced Honeyeater. This species can be readily identified by its all grey body and distinctive yellow line, which runs from the base of the birds’ bill along under the eye. Similar species to the Yellow-faced Honeyeater in South-east Queensland is the Brown Honeyeater. However, the Brown Honeyeater is smaller in size without the yellow line under the eye. There are three races of Yellow-faced Honeyeater in Australia. One is found in North Queensland and the other two occur in the southern states such as New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia. Throughout their range, Yellow-faced Honeyeater are common birds. This species inhabits a variety of habitats including mountain forests, dry woodlands, coast scrubs, gardens and heath. Yellow-faced Honeyeater are partially migratory throughout their range and can often be heard moving in small groups of a wintertime in South-east Queensland. These birds can be very active when feeding on blossom and can be seen foraging in different strata of the forest canopy. Possibly the best way to get decent views of this bird species is to find a place where they are coming into drink with other birds. Although Yellow-faced Honeyeaters are a common species, they can certainly test individuals who are new to bird watching due to them fitting into the category of a ‘little brown job’. For me the easiest way to identify Yellow-faced Honeyeaters are by their call when I first encountered them. Now, they are bird species that I regularly encounter and I usually always hear them before I see them!

Richmond Birdwing Butterfly

By Susan Cully Early last century the Richmond Birdwing Butterfly was so common it littered the streets of Brisbane (they die naturally after mating and laying eggs.). In the 1990s this was considered a threatened species, it had all but disappeared in many locations. Captive breeding programs were established and many citizens and schools grew the host plant, Aristolochia praevenosa. The deadly Dutchman’s Pipe (killer of caterpillars) was culled. This year there is an explosion of Birdwing activity: hatching, mating, feeding. The roundabout in Beechmont is actually littered with spent female butterflies. The have laid their eggs. It may even be the case that there would be a second hatching event this summer, it being such a long summer. If you would like to support these butterflies it is the nectar plants that are very important in such a dry year. If the adults are to live and mate they need nectar. Visit the website of the Wildlife Preservation Society and the RBWB Conservation network to learn which plants these butterflies look for in gardens. wildlife.org.au/ richmond-birdwing-butterfly and richmondbirdwing.org.au/adultfood. The host vines are essential for the caterpillars (see websites). The butterfly is quite adaptable, feeding naturally on natives like Callistemon, Lilly Pillies, Native Frangipani, Pavetta, Eucalypts and many more. However many common cottage garden plants have a good supply of nectar: Honeysuckle (keep this under control as it is a vigorous bushland invader), single Hibiscus, Pentas, Buddleias, Plumbago, shown above, and Agapanthus. They have a preference generally for red flowers. The butterfly fly long distance between our plateaus, to achieve these expanses they need some fuel and would be grateful for a nectar-stop in your garden.

News from St Luke’s By Di Ayscough Christmas is over, the wrapping paper is in the bin and what was it all about? I hope you enjoyed time with family and friends and did not over eat. St Luke’s celebrated a wonderful night of carols with a happy audience enjoying the magnificent voice of Stewart Morris, a former 10 Tenors member. Christmas Day saw many smiling faces celebrating the birth of Christ. St Luke’s fundraising raffle was a great success and we are extremely grateful for the support the community of Canungra gave, as this means St Luke’s can continued to be maintained in its pristine condition. Congratulations to the prize winners of Kellie, Louise and Darren who are all local people. Rt Rev’d John Roundhill, Bishop of the Southern Region visited St Luke’s and led a well-attended enthusiastic pre-Christmas service. It was his first visit to Canungra. Before long, it will be back to school for children after the Christmas/New Year break. If you would like an activity for your children on Monday afternoons, 2.50pm until 4.00pm (during school term) Jan Armstrong is leading an Atrium time, with the help of John and Anne King. This involves free afternoon tea followed by child focused time in church where the aim is to help children learn about God and the Christian faith. There is a Bible message, prayer time and craft activities. You may drop your child off for the hour or you are welcome to stay. Any child, from kindy to upper primary will be made welcome. May 2020 bring much needed rain, good health, freedom from fires and happiness to you all. A special thank you must be made to Keer, the Editor of this newspaper, for all she has done to keep Canungra in the news and on the map. Keer, a huge thank you for all you do for Canungra. We are truly blessed to have you.

Moriarty Park News

Canungra Owls Soccer Club

with Bren Dalby If you are thinking of a birthday party, wedding, any kind of function please consider us as a venue! Great facility with disabled toilet, spacious kitchen, lots of parking and fabulous outlook, at a very competitive price. Watch out also for trivia nights and the odd Bingo fun night ... one coming up around Australia Day so keep an eye out on Foodworks noticeboard and social media or our website - www.moriartypark.com.au. Moriarty Park is proud and appreciative of the terrific support we have in so many ways from Tony and Anne at Canungra Foodworks. Our soccer club have been successful in a grant application for a super revamp of the downstairs canteen area so big: “well done” to them for further improving the whole facility. We work well together in grant applications to maximise positive results; thanks to Jodie Clifford for all her hard work in achieving this. We would like also to thank Scenic Rim Regional Council for their patience with some minor improvements required to comply with our lease agreement that we are working towards as time dictates, and also for their assistance, swiftly helping with any issues we have that come under Council jurisdiction; it is good to have your support and it is appreciated. If you would like to be involved in some way with Moriarty Park Community Sports Centre please come along to one of our monthly meetings which are generally held on the third Monday of the month at 7.30pm. Enquiries to Bren Dalby on bren.dalby@bigpond.com or 0414 435 919. Here’s wishing everyone a fantastic sufficiently rain filled 2020!

By Bren Dalby Saturday 11th January is the big date to pop in your calendars for our Open Day and help with signing up for a super soccer season. There will be various fun activities at Moriarty Park, and a sausage sizzle from 9am. If you think you may be able to help out with a small (or big, lol) task to help out the Club for soccer season please come along also; it will be greatly appreciated. We would like to thank the Community Benefit Gambling Fund for approving our grant request for a super upgrade to our kitchen/canteen facility...this work will begin shortly and we are really looking forward to a schmick new kitchen to cook up some wonders for you! Please get on board and support our Owls Soccer Club, even by coming along to a game or two, having a beverage and a box of chips and catching up with some folk! Look out for new season info in this space!

SOME THINGS YOU MAY NOT KNOW ABOUT THE CANUNGRA TIMES

50% OFF! Any ads for Community Groups and Job Ads

We want to reward community groups that work hard to promote themselves, their events and their programs. It also applies to job ads, because we know how important jobs are in this region.

Ads from just $22

We know small business is tough, and advertising can sometimes be expensive. We keep our prices affordable because we would rather see you get a return on your investment over the long term than sell you an ad one time.

Local Biz Priority We do our best not to promote out of town businesses that are competing with local businesses.

We would rather advertise a local business wherever possible to ensure we deliver on our promise of helping the local economy.

We’re just like you! We are a local small business just like you.

We live here, we are raising a family and we are committed to the region. Our advertisers are our friends and neighbours and we have a vested interest in helping you succeed.

That’s how we support you. You can support us by taking an ad in our paper so we can continue to do what we have been doing - building a community focussed paper.
