Soccer Scores FoodWorks Sponsorship Canungra Owls Soccer Club has started the new year with a host of existing and new sponsors, including a major sponsorship deal with Canungra FoodWorks. Committee member Bren Dalby thanked the parents and players who came to the Club’s Try Out Day on 30th January and those who have registered online. “We are ready for registrations for a fun filled year of soccer and getting fit again!” said Bren. “Thank you also to Canungra FoodWorks for providing the sausages and accouterments for the sausage sizzle!” Canungra FoodWorks has also secured the number one sponsor slot with the Club. “Massive thank you to Tony and Anne and the crew for the magic support you show us and all at Moriarty Park, aka ‘FoodWorks Stadium’”, said Bren. “Canungra FoodWorks have worked hard in all our community groups for over 13 years.” “This community is

tremendously lucky to have them.” Bendigo Bank continue to support the Canungra Owls Soccer Club. For the next three years Bendigo Bank will hold pride of place on a full sleeve slot of all playing shirts. “Moriarty Park owes a great deal already to Bendigo Bank on many levels and appreciate all they have done for us and their ongoing wish to continue to support more and more of our community needs, to move on and service the rapidly growing community better.” The Outpost and BP have indeed also been extremely generous in their support of the Owls and will hold a full sleeve slot as well. “The owners of the Outpost and BP offered us more than we even suggested and we are very grateful and appreciative of that generous offer,” said Bren. “The Club will use funds wisely to provide terrific playing shirts and equipment to get as many

Charlotte Tomlinson, Victoria Lee, Lucy Stephens and Symka Parry are excited about the new FoodWorks sponsorship of the Canungra Owls Soccer Club children and adults out playing soccer and enjoying all the joys that the game brings.” Bren said Aussie Lifestyle Properties have always been supportive of Canungra Owls Soccer Club and are welcomed as 2021 sponsors. “We are delighted again to have them side by side with us. Their logo will emblazon the shirts under the number.” Bren said the support of these local businesses

means the Club can keep their fees lower and urged the community to support the Club by coming to games during the year. “We want all children to be able to enjoy this wonderful game and the associated social activities and benefits that come with it,” she said. “Let’s keep this community helping the community.” “We are hoping for a better sporting year ahead. Let’s keep that by getting involved a bit, coming along to support, buying a bacon and egg roll from the canteen on a Saturday morning or a curry on a Wednesday night, be entertained and support our local teams.” To register as a player, visit playfootball.com.au and search for Canungra Owls Soccer Club.

HUMANS CANUNGRA of

Kara Swift By Keer Moriarty Photography by Katherine O’Brien Photography

One of the last things Kara Swift said after this interview was “my work is my life” and talking to her about the ability of yoga and meditation to change people’s lives, I can understand what she means. As a yoga teacher and the owner of Canungra Yoga, her work is not only enjoyable for her, she gets great reward from seeing the changes in people’s lives.

Has yoga always been a part of your life? I’ve been doing yoga personally since I was 25 and I did my yoga teacher training about 10 years ago. Before that I had a business on the Gold Coast that was under management so I could do my yoga teacher training while they were under management. When I started Canungra Yoga I had both businesses and juggled them for a while but I decided yoga is my passion and that’s what I wanted to do. What was the other business? I did a Bachelor of Business degree at uni and then opened day spas at resorts on the Gold Coast. That was 25 years ago when that wasn’t really a thing in resorts and hotels. Were the day spas a passion? What was a passion was bringing calm into people’s lives. I am a qualified remedial massage therapist but I

don’t do it any more. You’ve done a fair bit of travel, haven’t you? When I was 21 I lived in Germany for three years and taught myself how to speak German. On the weekends I’d flit off to Paris or Prague for the weekend because everything is so close. I loved living in Europe. I went back for eight months when I was 30. So you have followed your passions? Yes. One of my passions is bringing people together and bringing community together. Which is strange because I’m very much an introvert and socially I do my own thing a lot but I love to bring community together for events and things like that. Do you feel that’s translating through the retreats and your yoga classes? Yes, next week I’m collaborating with Pretty Produce and doing a yoga class out there by the river and at O’Reil-

ly’s Canungra Valley Vineyards as well. Bringing people to different places where there’s nature around - I like to have that nature connection. Several of my students have become yoga teachers now which is great as I like to spread yoga as much as I can. Danielle King now has her own yoga business which is great... the more people doing yoga the better this world would be I reckon! It must be nice to see yoga have that affect on student’s lives and the changes in your student’s lives over the years. Unlike me, most people would stick with it for years, I’d imagine? You’ve been once or twice (laughs)! Yoga and meditation can be so life changing for people. I get emails from people saying how it has changed their life and I always make sure

Kara Swift I say it is the yoga, not me. So is it because those people are going through things or it gives them a different outlook? Yoga really connects you to your true nature, whatever that is for you. Whether it is helping you with problems you’re dealing with or your calling. It connects you with your inner voice and when that happens the world opens up a bit more. How does that work? In a normal day you have worry, stress and anxiety and yoga gives you a place to help your

mind be quiet and listen to that inner voice. It gives you a way to actually just sit and close your eyes. Do you do that? Just before you got here. I’ve had a busy morning - swimming laps at the pool and a couple of meetings. So I sat here and closed my eyes. I wouldn’t say it was meditation but it was a conscious slowing down. Do you have a place that brings you calm? Anywhere in nature with trees for me, which is why I’m so grateful to be living here.

Over 50s Gated Village Proposed

Canungra will have its first gated community if a development application for an over 50s Lifestyle Village is approved. The application, submitted to Council on 23rd December 2020, is for a Material Change of Use for an Over 50’s lifestyle resort consisting of 188 dwellings and an office at 7 - 39 Finch Road. In addition to the dwellings, the proposal includes a gym, swimming pool, off-leash dog park, community garden and Men’s Shed. The dwellings will be two and three bedroom homes, ownership of these would be on a leasehold basis. Canungra’s water shortages are well known and have been of concern for residents since 2019. Project Manager for the site, Riye Arai-Coupe of Bluebird Property said nicRim #OneSce

the company has been working to reduce and conserve water where possible. Each dwelling in the proposed development is required to connect roof water runoff to a 5000 litre tank next to the home or a large tank located within the Community Facilities Building. A statement from Urban Utilities said as the bulk water supplier, Seqwater is responsible for ensuring water security to cater for future population growth. “We’re responsible for delivering that water and providing sewerage services to local customers through our network of pipes, pumps, reservoirs and sewage treatment plants,” the spokesperson said. “We’re aware of a planned development on Finch Road in Canungra

The proposed development will contain 188 dwellings. and have provided preliminary advice that our water and sewerage network in the area can potentially service the proposed development.”

Gratitude for Community Support

In September 2019, Stewart and Pamela Skeen had just sat down for dinner when their neighbour rang, asking if they had evacuated. “I said what do you mean? We’re having dinner,” said Stewart. “He said you’ve got to get out, the fire’s coming.” Pamela stood in the hallway with a suitcase, wondering what to pack. She grabbed her medication, important papers, orthotic shoes and their birds. “I put the dinner in the fridge and we walked out of the house thinking we’ll be back in an hour or so,” said Pamela. The couple spent the night in the car park of the Old School Site on Beechmont. “I wished I’d packed up the dinner and taken it with us,” Pamela said.

That night, their home and 10 others on the Beechmont plateau burnt to the ground in the start of a horror summer of bushfires across the east coast of Australia. Stewart and Pamela said there was never any doubt they would rebuild, as their daughter Deborah’s ashes are scattered under a Hoop Pine on the property. They say the help they received from the community in the wake of the fires has been overwhelming. Stewart and Pamela lived in a cottage owned by Martin and Nicole Kapusin from the second night they were evacuation until their home was rebuilt. “They helped us all the way through the building process,” said Stewart. The number of people Stewart and Pamela

100 Years of Hair Styling, at Your Service

When you walk through the doors of Canungra’s Zanzibar Hairstyling, you’ll discover a salon with a difference. The team is comprised of four master stylists with a combined 100 years of experience in the industry, led by owner Di Robson who has been a hairdresser for 38 years. It is almost unheard of to have so much talent and experience in one salon, but what really sets Di and her team apart is their focus on operating as a tight-knit team and providing a personalised service to their clients. Di has had her longest client for 23 years and many of her clients followed her from the Gold Coast when she set up her Canungra salon three and a half years ago, and it’s easy to see why. On the walls of Zanzibar Hairstyling, you’ll recognise some local faces, because Di often uses local clients as models for her highly anticipated annual hair photo shoot. It’s all about the client and we take all the time we need to service each client individually,” said Di. “We’re all about quality of time and no-one’s rushed, everyone gets full consultation, we look at pictures and colour swatches. There’s a lay down massage chair and my mum works a few days a week as our in-house health practitioner offering head and shoulder massages, foot spas, foot reflexology and more. New Citizens Welcomed Guardrails to Move

Lisa Eldridge, Cobi Gordon, Jacqui Chadwick, new citizen Shelley Pointer, Bella Gordon and Phil Chadwick. Nineteen Scenic Rim residents from 15 countries celebrated their first Australia Day as trueblue Aussies, including Canungra’s Shelley Pointer. Mayor Greg Christensen congratulated the

new citizens on behalf of the Scenic Rim. “I hope you will enjoy a happy and successful future here in our very special part of the world.” The Scenic Rim’s newest Australians join the more than 4.5 million

people from around the globe who have pledged to become Australian citizens since 26 January 1949, when the Nationality and Citizenship Act introduced a unique national identity for Australians.

Guardrails decimating wildlife on Beaudesert-Nerang Road are under investigation, with changes expected to be made in March. A Transport and Main Roads spokesperson said the Department is currently investigating guardrail modification options to provide a safe passage for wildlife while meeting requirements to protect the safety of all road users. It is expected the investigation will be completed in March. Works to modify the guardrail to provide a safe passage for fauna to cross the area safely will begin soon afterwards. Local resident Gary Robertson said wildlife carers worked with TMR to advise locations where animals have been injured or killed. He was advised by TMR that sections of the

barriers will be removed at the end of February or the end of March. “I’ve been told that TMR are reviewing their policy on these barriers. They won’t roll them out willy nilly without taking wildlife into consideration in future,” he said. “I appreciate what TMR have done and I understand the protocols they have to go through to get things changed. To get them to change something is a major feat - it’s our community that have done that. We have had to be the voice for the wildlife.” Data collection relating to the road environment from other organisations including the Department of Environment and Science, City of Gold Coast and Scenic Rim Regional Council has been undertaken for the investigation.

Canungra Pool Celebrates 20th Anniversary Canungra Pool celebrated its 20 year anniversary with a free day for all Canungra residents on 14th January 2021. Rackley Swimming/ City Venue Management who hold the lease for the pool, ran a free Aqua Aerobics session and held activities for children during the day. Cr Virginia West said former Moriarty Park Committee Member, Joane Hopley, contacted her to advise the community of the significance of the date. Mrs Hopley, who now lives on the Gold Coast, was part of the Moriarty Park executive who instigated a fundraising campaign to build a swimming pool in Canungra. Cr West said at the time the community got behind the campaign to make the pool a reality. “You can see from the tiles on the shed wall and the starting blocks that so

many local families dug deep for this project,” she said. “It is a tribute to Joan Hopley, her committee, the residents of Canungra and the then Beaudesert Shire Council for their commitment to this project which is a well used and valuable community asset.” Robyn Mahony cut the birthday cake on the day. Mrs Mahony was heavily involved in the campaign for the swimming pool and was the first Canungra Swimming Club President. For many years Mrs Hopley was known locally as “Mrs Moriarty Park” for her time and dedication to the facility. She was also a key part of the campaign to have lights installed at the sportsground. This campaign raised over $100,000 through a long fundraising venture in the town.

Free Rainfall Chart A Complete Treatment

The Canungra Times has paired with the Beaudesert Bulletin in response to requests from readers to produce their first rainfall chart. Editor, Keer Moriarty, said she had several people asking for a rainfall chart at the end of 2020. Keer said she is grateful for the assistance of the businesses in Canungra and Beaudesert who supported the rainfall chart. “We are distributing the chart

free of charge in Canungra and Beaudesert through the businesses who advertised on it. It would not have been possible without the support of these local businesses.” The Canungra Times Rainfall Charts are available locally through: Aussie Lifestyle Properties, Canungra Hardware, Trilogy Accounting, Bendigo Bank and The Canungra Times office.

Upgrades for The Old School Site

The Old School Site at Beechmont will receive substantial improvements through funding from Scenic Rim Regional Council (SRRC). BAPA President, David White said he was delighted to receive notification of the successful grant application. The old school building, which up until December 2020 was the Beechmont Op Shop, will have the interior walls and ceilings painted, non-functioning and damaged louvre windows replaced, old, worn carpet removed and floor boards sanded and sealed. BAPA plans to use this building for community use once the renovations and repairs are completed. Mr White said a number of ideas are being discussed by the BAPA Committee and this will be on the agenda for upcoming meetings. The demountable building will also receive

new floor coverings and built-in storage to better house the equipment of various groups that hire the space. The exterior will also be painted. Mr White said he was very happy that the grant will cover important needs for the Headmaster’s Cafe which is enjoying growing patronage. It will have new outdoor furniture, a permanent weather proof structure built to enable customers to better enjoy outdoor dining whatever the weather. Air conditioning will be installed in the kitchen area. “It gets unbearably hot in there when the cooker is fired up,” Mr White said. “So this will ensure comfort of the kitchen staff especially during the summer months.” With a number of significant improvements recently completed on the Old School site, including a new 17-car

eral Government Bush Fire Recovery Projects Scheme, as necessary to upgrade the site because it can be safely and easily used in emergency situations such as was experienced in the September 2019 bush fire disaster.

Gondwana Festival to Celebrate Environment By Susie Cunningham Local ecotourism operators will share the World Heritage-listed rainforests of Lamington National Park through the month-long Gondwana Festival in March. Binna Burra Lodge, O’Reilly’s Rainforest Retreat and Beechmont-based Park Tours will host guided walks, talks and wild adventures through Lamington National Park and beyond. The festival extends to Mount Barney, with Park Tours to lead a five day trek from Binna Burra to Mt Barney via O’Reilly’s, and Mt Barney Lodge to host the inaugural Scenic Rim Adven-

ture Festival from 19th to 21st March. Beechmont local Lisa Groom from Park Tours said while the Gondwana Festival was a significant tourism event for the region, she encouraged locals to get involved and said there would be day experiences to choose from across the program. She said she is excited about sharing the World Heritage experiences available locally. “I normally take Australians on international treks across the world, but during this time we have come to further realise and value this incredible World Heritage

experience in our own backyard,” she said. Binna Burra Lodge CEO Jonathan Fisher said it would be a festival with a difference. “This is not a festival where you’ll experience hordes of people and the usual trappings of large festivals. This is an immersion experience where people can rediscover and relax in nature and also challenge themselves physically if they choose to,” he said. “We’re supporting the First Nations opening of the Festival at Binna Burra to pay tribute to this ancient, volcanic place that was over 180 million years in the making, sharing the traditional own-

activities ranging from the iconic Autumn Bird Week and Stinson Walk to the famous treetop walk, glow worms and the Forests of Lamington walk and talk. To view the full program, visit www.gondwanafestival.com.au.

Happy New Year With 2021 well underway I hope you have all had a restful festive season with family and friends and feel refreshed to face the already emerging challenges of the up coming year. Life has certainly changed somewhat and we all need to be resilient and embrace these changes to our daily lives.

Beaudesert Nerang Rd Guardrails I was delighted to receive a phone call recently from a DTMR project officer who advised there are plans to address the

guardrails by removing some portions on the straight sections and reassessing the installation policy to better accommodate native wildlife movements. This follows communication with concerned community members and a number of others, and he commented on how respectful all levels of conversation and negotiation had been. I too agree that this respectful process has gone a long way to improving this situation, and thanks to all involved to date especially Gary, Tara and Bren. Work is scheduled to begin in late February.

Water Supply For Canungra Although we have received good rain recently

and the Canungra Creek is flowing again can I assure residents that the Mayor and myself are still pursuing future water security for those on reticulated supply but also those on tank water and the rural producers. We have a meeting scheduled in coming weeks with SEQWater and Urban Utilities officers.

Business Industry Newsletter As a business owner and rural producer you may want to sign up for this very informative newsletter and keep updated on all upcoming events. For example the Farm2Plate Exchange hosted by the dynamic Rose Wright from Regionality which is sched-

uled for May 2021. Visit www.investscenicrim.com.au and the sign up section is at the bottom of the page.

Draft Waste Management Strategy The draft Waste Management and Resource Recovery Strategy 20212026 has been released for community consultation and I encourage residents to have a read and provide their valuable feedback. The strategy focuses on waste targets and how

sending waste to landfill can be reduced, increased recycling and resource recovery from waste. The strategy and your feedback will need to be via the website www.scenicrim.qld.gov.au/haveyour-say Hard copies are available to view at any Customer Service and Administration Centre . An information session will be held at The Vonda Youngman Centre, Wednesday 3rd February at 5pm. Feedback closes on Friday 19th February.

CONTACT ME I am always available to talk directly with residents on telephone 5540 5403 or 0407 630 052 or email virginia.w@scenicrim.qld.gov.au. I am still unable to meet directly residents at Canungra Library but happy to arrange a meeting in D J Smith Park if required.

Local Biz Priority

We’re just like you!

We do our best not to promote out of town businesses that are competing with local businesses.

We are a local small business just like you. We live here, we are raising a family and we are committed to the region.

Ask us how we can help you to promote your event or community organisation.

We know small business is tough, and advertising can sometimes be expensive. We keep our prices affordable because we would rather see you get a return on your investment over the long term than sell you an ad one time.

We would rather advertise a local business wherever possible to ensure we deliver on our promise of helping the local economy.

Our advertisers are our friends and neighbours and we have a vested interest in helping you succeed.

We want to reward community groups that work hard to promote themselves, their events and their programs.

THAT’S HOW WE SUPPORT YOU. You can support us by taking an ad in our paper so we can continue to do what we have been doing - building a community focussed paper. The Canungra Times – February 2021

Brickbat The 14th December 2020 “Ordinary” Meeting was notable for a) the retrospective validation of flagrant disregard for both s173 of the Local Government Regulation 2012 (Unauthorised spending) and b) non-compliance with the requirements re only “non-conflicted” councillors voting. Both instances relate to the “Water for Warrill” project. Both Cr McInness and Cr Christensen were conflicted, but due to amazingly fortuitous timing of their declarations, the outcome of the Mayor’s

Page 26

request to remain in the discussion was apparently manipulated, and he went on to vote. I suggest all Councillors revisit their induction training, specifically the scenario relevant to conflicts of interest in a Council meeting. Why did the CEO not intervene?

Bouquet Any people interested in sewing? I highly recommend the current exhibition on at The Centre: “Madame Weigel Fashion Designer - Entrepreneur - Liberator. Local content, and

follows the history of paper patterns in Australia. Some excellent samples of items made over the decades from her paper patterns. Entry is free and it is on until Friday 12th February 2021. Well worth a visit for those who sew!

Development Applications For those wishing to lodge a submission (objection) to the relentless progression of small-lot developments in Canungra, a proforma petition will be prepared and made available (as discussed with residents this week). Contact me by email for details. Submitters can either lodge the proforma as is or add their individual comments in the space provided. Either way, they count towards the number of valid submissions made.

MCU20/133 – Impact Assessable – “Retirement Facility” at 7 - 39 Finch Road, Canungra. 188 homes (leased not owned). Cr West’s columns rightly make regular reference to Canungra’s water issues, yet when anyone questions council’s role in the water saga, the response is that Urban Utilities has responsibility. This one will no doubt be approved “with conditions” as Council does not have an appetite for court battles. The following also relate to developments on Finch Road (all lodged 14th January 2021): OPW21/002 – Code Assessable - Electrical Reticulation and Street Lighting OPW21/003 - Code Assessable - Clearing of Vegetation associated with a DA OPW21/004 – Code Assessable - Clearing of Vegetation

OPW20/046 – Reminder: Application for over-sized service station signage. 305-309 Brisbane St. Have your say and write to council, after all, millions of dollars are to be spent on “improving” Beaudesert. Will over-sized signage contribute to that?

Court Actions Supreme Court: 13762/19 Scenic Rim Developments P/L -vSRRC – Claim for damages. Directions hearing date is set down for 29th January 2021. I wonder if my bus pass is still valid? I could do with a trip to Brisbane. The plaintiff lodged a second amended Statement of Claim on 15 Jan 2021 and the defendant lodged an affidavit on 18th January 2021.

The Canungra Times – February 2021

I hope everyone had a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. By the time you read this, all the children should be off the couch and back at school.

Meetings Council’s fortnightly Ordinary meetings on Tuesdays have a formal format and follow a set of Standing Orders. These meetings are audio recorded and community members can listen in live or access the recording after it is uploaded to Council’s website. It’s encouraging to see so many residents listening in and we hope in the future to have a live stream video of the meetings.

We have now included public question time before our Ordinary Meetings so, if you have a question you would like to raise, please email it to mail@scenicrim.qld.gov. au with Public Question Time in the subject line. Once we get back to normal after COVID-19, we hope to have in-person public question time in the Chambers. At our less formal confidential meetings, which are held fortnightly on Wednesdays, we are briefed by Council Officers (no decisions are made) on issues including planning, budget and asset management.

Roads During the year, Council invested almost $12 million in a road construction program, more than $4 million in a

bridge program and more than $3 million in road reseals. Improving the region’s road corridors and bridges enables better access for residents and visitors across our towns and villages, and supports a more efficient transport network, which encourages future economic development.

Regional Events I am looking forward to another challenging year as we are still dealing with COVID-19 and it does not seem likely the virus will disappear any time soon.

Interesting times are ahead with how governments deal with ‘keeping us safe’. Indications are that many community and tourism events will proceed. We have many events such as Eat Local Week, which attracts more than 45,00 visitors to the Scenic Rim, bringing in more than $2.5 million to local businesses.

Smart Region Strategy Council secured matched funding under Round 4 of the Building Better Regions Fund –

Community Stream to develop a Smart Region Strategy for the Scenic Rim. CyQIQ have been appointed to deliver this project, which will be the first Smart Region Strategy for the region. The development of the strategy will ensure the region’s businesses and community embrace the global digital trend, to advance our economy, attract investment, build prosperity and improve community life and lifestyles, ultimately enhancing the livability of the Scenic Rim region.

CONTACT ME I am always available to talk directly with residents on telephone on my mobile 0436 327 434 or email jeff.m@scenicrim.qld.gov.au. Follow me on Facebook – Jeff McConnell Councillor for Division 2 Scenic Rim Regional Council I am happy to meet with anyone who requests a meeting.

Changing with the Times perience in local newspapers. Rob Brown has been a mentor for me over the years and has extensive experience both in local newspapers and printing.” Journalist Susie Cunningham has recently joined the team. Susie worked at the Beaudesert Times for five years, covering a broad range of stories including the reopening of Beaudesert Hospital maternity services, stories of Beaudesert’s strong Mununjali community, the dairy industry’s battle against $1 a litre milk, the matter of coal seam gas exploration in the region, droughts and floods. Susie said she found great value in sharing the stories of the region.

A love of country communities has seen The Canungra Times expand, with the emergence of a sister publication and expansion into printing. Under the banner of Scenic Rim Media, Editor Keer Moriarty started the fortnightly Beaudesert Bulletin in July 2020 - a publication that has been embraced by the Beaudesert community. “When I started the Bulletin, I knew there would be benefits for The Canungra Times,” said Keer. “I’m now working on both publications with a team of very experienced, community minded people.” “Our designer Kate Cahill has 30 years ex-

Copper washing machine.

The washing copper was a round tub (made of copper) inserted into an upright, cast iron sleeve in the back yard. The copper was filled with water, grated sunlight soap added and then the dirty clothes were added (usually the first load was the white sheets and pillow slips). Early in the morning a fire was lit under this copper and when the sheets had boiled they were removed with a stick (an old broom handle) and dropped into a slatted wooden box in an old wheelbarrow. The water drained out into a bucket and was returned to the copper for the next load of clothes. The drained sheets were wheeled to the tubs, a set

of three concrete open boxes containing clean cold water. One was used to get as much soapy water out as possible, then hand rung and move to the second tub which repeated the rinsing. The third tub contained ‘blue’ cold water (“out of the blue comes the whitest wash - Reckett’s Blue bag - also used for bee stings”). As much water as possible was wrung out of the clothes before they returned to the box in the barrow to be wheeled to the clothes lines in the paddock. These lines were often wire strung between two trees. In our home, there were posts at the ends and three wires on which to hang the washing. As the wet washing was rather heavy we had clothes props in the middle of each line, about three metre saplings with a forked end to put around the wire to hold it up. By this time the next load was ready to start the journey from the copper to the line - and so Monday rolled on nearly all day. At times, the water and soap in the first tub warmed up enough to be used for the hand washing of more delicate items. The items washed progressively got dirtier with the last load being Dad’s work clothes from milking, feeding pigs and calves, fencing, ploughing and so on. The water was always left to cool down overnight and in the next day or two, Mum would use it to scrub the scale off the roses or water some part of the garden. The same copper was well cleaned and used for cooking the ham at Christmas time! The Canungra Times – February 2021

MOTORING NEWS

The Kia Seltos S was launched in late 2019 as the company’s small SUV answer to a question other manufacturers have already answered. The SP2-series Seltos is really the SUV variant of the Cerato, which is a fantastic car, and like the Cerato the Seltos S is living up strong to the Kia brand. Starting from $26,290 plus on-road costs and $1,000 more if you want the safety pack, the Seltos S is a good place to start when looking for a small SUV. The front gives the little car a bigger look with large grilles and bumper. The range offers vibrant colour choices, and the Seltos stands out from others in the sector. When jumping in, most materials are of the hardy, durable variety, with the plastic wheel probably the next biggest giveaway after the

wheels that you’ve chosen a base model. The seats are decent for a base model and there would be no problem driving to Sydney from Brisbane, besides the whole COVID factor. The back seat is nice to sit in and there is a surprising amount of leg room when the front seats are not all the way back. However, the passengers in the back miss out on map pockets, USB ports and cupholders. Under the bonnet, the 2.0-litre, naturally aspirated four-cylinder punches well above its weight as it generates only 110kW and 180Nm with a CVT driving the front wheels. The ADR fuel claim is just 6.8L/100km on the combined cycle, and we were averaging just over the 7L/100km. The Seltos gets a decent amount of safety gear, which we all now

LASER THERAPY By Alison Ford

Laser Therapy as a Physio Therapeutic Tool The term LASER is the acronym for Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation. Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) is used by some physiotherapists to treat various musculoskeletal conditions. It is a non-invasive light source treatment which generates a single wavelength of light. It emits no heat, sound, or vibration and affects the function of connective tissue cells (fibroblasts), accelerates connective tissue repair and acts as an anti-inflammatory agent. It is sometimes referred to as Cold Laser Therapy. Cold Laser Therapy can provide relief in just minutes to a wide spectrum of conditions such as: sprains; tennis elbow; carpal tunnel; chronic back pain; neck and shoulder pains; chronic

scarring; lymphedema; women’s pelvic pain; osteoarthritis and fibromyalgia. It helps to increase blood flow, decrease scar tissue, decrease inflammation and increase cellular growth. When cells are injured and diseased, the type of light emitted is altered. Cold Laser Therapy uses a ‘healthy’ light wavelength to re-program injured or diseased cells. It is simply a beam of light which stimulates the powerhouse of your cells at the site of injury as it provides energy to the cells to speed up healing. This results in repairing the damaged cells to help fast-track recovery. These low doses of light have demonstrated the ability to heal skin, nerves, tendons, cartilage and bones. Light set at a specific wavelength and intensity

according to what is required, is applied to an injury or a painful site for three or four minutes twice a week for several weeks. Approximately three to six treatments are required to reduce inflammation and promote blood circulation thereby assisting the revitalisation of cells and promotion of healing. The result is a reduction of inflammation, pain relief and accelerated tissue regeneration. At Optimal Health Physiotherapy Cold Laser Therapy is always used in conjunction with other Physiotherapeutic modalities including manual therapy. As Physiotherapists we have had professional post-graduate training in its use and offer it as a safe, natural healing modality.

Empowering Young Women

Young women aged 16 to 19 are encouraged to nominate for the Zonta Young Women in Public Affairs (YWPA) Award Program, for an opportunity to be rewarded for their contributions to the community. The award is worth $500, and nominations must be made by 19th February to the Zonta Club of Beaudesert Area Inc by contacting Michelle Tuner by email to beaudesert@district22. zonta.org. The YWPA Award Program encourages young women to participate in public affairs by recognising their commitment to the volunteer sector, evidence of volunteer leadership achievements and a dedication to the empowerment of women. Applicants are asked to reflect on their volun-

tary commitment to their school and community and the problems limiting the empowerment of women. Women aged 16 to 19 as of 1st April, living in a Zonta district/region, are eligible to apply. Women from Canungra can apply via the Zonta Club of Beaudesert Inc. Classified members and employees of Zonta International and Zonta International Foundation, and their family members, are not eligible. The Zonta Club of Beaudesert Area offers members, through Zonta, the opportunity to make a difference, develop their leadership potential, network with other business and professional women, be part of an international organisation and share friendship with women who have common goals.

Nacho is a very affectionate guy and he really likes gentle pats. He’s a little shy and is not quite himself at the moment as he is only new to the shelter. Loud noises and lots of activity is something he is only just getting

used to. The staff at the AWL say they know when Nacho comes home with you, he will relax and become the best version of himself he can be. They say he is sure to love you as much as you love him!

NATURE’S GEMS By Melissa Whitby

One of the most common sights around Canungra during summer is the distinctive white birds which accompany cattle and horses on their daily grazing routines. Cattle Egrets are white with yellow eyes and beak, but when the birds are breeding, they develop a distinctive orange colouring on their head and neck. Male and female birds look similar to each other. Cattle Egrets live in all states of Australia, particularly in coastal areas. In the early 1900s, Cattle Egrets arrived in Northern Australia and continued their expansion throughout Australia. Their distribution includes Indonesia, Papua New Guinea and New Zealand and favoured habitats include open paddocks, wetlands, tidal flats and rubbish dumps. Usually these birds are seen singly or in small groups. Their behaviour of following large grazing animals enables them

Cattle Egret

(Bubulcus coromandus)

Cattle Egret. to find food easily as the grazing movement of the larger animals disturbs it. Cattle Egrets feed on insects, fish and frogs and have adapted to utilising man-made habitats with respect to food sources and places to breed. These birds nest in communal colonies, which include other egret, ibis and cormorant species. A small stick nest is built in suitable trees, located near water. One of the easiest places to see Cattle Egrets breeding is around Gympie during summer at parks and rest stops which have trees

surrounded by water. A pair of adult Cattle Egrets may raise at least three chicks. Cattle Egrets are an easy bird species to see and are very common. When the birds are breeding, thousands may be seen in their communal breeding colonies. They are an impressive sight when in full breeding plumage. This is a bird species that I first saw when I was a child, but I never cease to be in awe of their beauty or how they have adapted to man-made habitats.

Dragon Flies and Damselflies

By Jon Krause

By Susan Cully This new book, Dragonflies and Damselflies of the Gold Coast by Damian White, Narelle Power and Chris Burwell, is beautiful just to look at, with approximately 250 photos, highlighting the 85 confirmed species of Odonata on the Gold Coast and an additional 21 species recorded nearby. More importantly, it is informative and helpful in identifying Dragonflies and Damselflies in our region. The text gives details on size, habitat, key identifying features, similar species and some key locations where they are known to be present. Anyone looking at creeks and puddles or wet boggy bits of a private garden in the Gold Coast and adjacent hinterland region will recognize some of these beauties while using this book. Damian is the son of Doug White. Doug was well-known for his generosity in sharing knowledge, identification of flora and fauna found in local catchments, often consulted for council projects. Damian has over 20 years’ experience in environmental consultancy with a passion for dragonflies and stream environments. This consultancy team has produced about 10 books for local councils and community organisations on fauna in general: frogs, reptiles, birds and fishes. Narelle uses her Entomology qualifications in the study of catchments and consultancy

Dr Chris Burwell is curator of entomology at the Queensland Museum with a specialisation in dragonflies amongst other insect groups Beechmont District Landcare Association has recently engaged Damian and Narelle to survey the catchment creatures found along and in the Back Creek in the SRRC reserves of Beechmont, this has been made possible with a grant through the Landcare Australia and WIRES Landcare Wildlife Relief and recovery grants program. Dragonflies and Damselflies of the Gold Coast is priceworthy and can be obtained at $15 plus postage and Packaging. Please send an email to Narelle at narrellepower@hotmail.com for ordering details.

NEW GYM OPEN

The first Parliamentary Sitting week for 2021 in Queensland starts at the end of this month and I am ready to continue to take every opportunity to fight for our fair share in the Scenic Rim Electorate. I recently met with the Assistant Commissioner for Police and highlighted the need for a greater police presence, especially on the roads at night to deter hooning. The issue was acknowledged, and I was informed about upcoming changes to how police resources are allocated that I hope will address this issue. I will also be seeking a briefing from Council and taking up planning matters with the State Government as the year progresses. Do not hesitate to contact me by phone on 1800 813 960, by email scenicrim@parliament. qld.gov.au or by mail at PO Box 656 Beaudesert QLD 4285.

Small Businesses The recent lockdowns in greater Brisbane are a timely reminder this new year that we are not out of the woods yet when it comes to COVID-19 in Australia. Please support your local shops and businesses in any way you can, to help keep local jobs and local dollars in town. Government at all levels need to make it easier for these businesses to grow – get rid of the red tape, the costs and the regulations – so they can create more jobs and I will continue to lobby to make this happen.

GCBF Round 108 of the Gambling Community Benefit Fund is now open and community organisations have until 28th February 2021 to apply for grants of up to $35,000. Contact my office for more information or to request a letter of support.

News from St Luke’s By Di Ayscough

Next Edition: 5 March DEADLINE FOR BOOKINGS & COPY:

Tuesday 23 February

2 April Edition

As I put pen to paper to write the first St Luke’s article for 2021, I am reminded of the importance of holding on to what is good. Whilst 2020 was seen as a year to totally put behind us as a bad year, there is always good to be found from our experiences. We did have a period without Sunday services at St Luke’s, followed by weeks of limitations in how the weekly service was presented. Some good things from this period include: very positive leadership from Fr Ken, the togetherness of the congregation to stay in touch and look after each other, and to maintain St Luke’s as a pristine and welcoming environment. During all this difficult time God never once faltered. We knew he would still hear our prayers and know that we would remain his faithful followers. Already the first month of the year is over and our children have returned to school. This means “Little Lukies” will be back stronger than ever on Monday afternoons, during term times, commencing at 3pm. All are welcome and it seems the growing number of children who are attending are bringing smiles to the growing number of adults. Don’t forget the kettle is always on and adults are welcome to stay for a cuppa. We have also had a visit from Bishop John and this is pleasing to know he values us as part of the Anglican church. Bishop John brought some words of encouragement as we discussed the possibilities of finding a permanent priest. Fr Ken has been doing a wonderful job but this extended period of time means he cannot enjoy his retirement. Thank you to all who attended our fourth Christmas Carols in the Church grounds. It was a very pleasant evening and we are planning a bigger and better event for Christmas of 2021. We continue to pray for good things for Canungra. We are extremely thankful for being part of this great community.

Sip, Paint, Laugh and Relax!

Katahli Arts offers sip and paint parties in the comfort of your own home, or a hired hall with an intimate group of chosen friends and family. Created by local artist Kate Kinsela, the first public event was held in January at Moriarty Park Hall. Kate said the ladies who attended had never painted before as adults and it was exciting for everyone. “There is an artist in all of us, it just comes down to who enjoys creating,” said Kate. “There is nothing more exciting than to see others give it a go, and how many

versions of a design you can have”. Kim Stranger, who attended the event with her teenage daughter said they both really enjoyed the art class. The teenagers who attended the event designed their canvas with what inspired them, which was welcomed by Kate. “They gave art a go, they created, experimented and it was amazing to see and be a part of their own journey,” she said. Kate says the sip and paint parties within the home environment have also been a huge hit. “Many people enjoy paint-

ing with a beverage, along with the support of friends and family in the comfort of their home.” “They can relax and be themselves with the added bonus to continue the party and get together through the night without having to leave when the art party has finished.” Kate says some people have even continued painting even after the event, and later shared their artwork with her which she says has been very rewarding. To host an art party from Katahli Arts contact Kate by email katahliarts@gmail. com or call 0432 413 039.

Moriarty Park News Well, a huge thank you goes out to all who have helped out with the mowing at Moriarty Park whilst we have been struggling to get funding for a mower. Thanks to RACQ and SRRC we now have a terrific zero turn mower, whipper snipper and blower from Mark and Linda and Canungra Mowers who did a great deal for us! The park looks amazing again ! The Book A Court tennis court system is about to be installed. You can book a court and pay on line and be sure the court is free for you to use by entering a code supplied. Thank you to Bendigo Bank for dealing with our Tennis Australia affiliation fees. Without that we could not have carried on with this project. Social tennis is building it’s numbers and is

held at 5.30pm on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Spare rackets are available! Our first Food Truck and Classic Car event was held on 30th January and was a fundraiser for our next big project – the skate park. We have many more bookings for the hall including: Tae Kwon Do, Pilates, drama and dance and yoga. Soon we will have a notice board on the outside wall of the hall to advertise times but for more details check out the website www.moriartypark.com.au. Kate Kinsela hosted her first Sip and Paint event at Moriarty Park recently and I am dying to have a crack at that! Moriarty Park meetings are held every third Monday of the month at 6.45pm. Everyone with

With Bren Dalby

Mark Stollznow of Canungra Mowers delivers the new mower to Toby Hall and Moriarty Park President Bren Dalby. an interest, particularly in the skate park, is welcome to join us. Trivia is back on Saturday 6th February and Friday 26th February at 6pm for a 6.30pm kick off. BYO drinks and nib-

blies. $5 per person with a maximum of six at a table. You don’t need a full team to come along, if you want to come on your own we just mix n match and make up teams! We will of course

have a raffle so please get involved with that as we will be fundraising for a charity to be announced on the night . All enquiries to Bren on 0414 435 919 or bren. dalby@bigpond.com.

SPORT Martial Arts Club Celebrates End of a Difficult Year Jakota Martial Arts held their annual grading and first annual awards night on 12th December at the Canungra School of Arts Hall. Instructor, Kirsty da Silva said all of the students did extremely well, achieving their next belts and showing incredible focus and improvement throughout a difficult year. Two students took away the Club’s most prestigious awards. Fourteen year old Keely Roscarel was presented with the Club’s perpetual award for Most Dedicated Student. “Keely is an amazing young woman who has shown such perseverance and improvement through the year,” said Ms da Silva. “She always helps with our younger students and puts in maximum effort in every class.”

“Keely even set up her own fitness program during lockdown. She is a real inspiration to other students.” Fifteen year old Connor Williams took out the award for Most Improved Student. “Connor has improved in leaps and bounds, working on his strength, technique and focus,” said Ms da Silva. Connor now has one more belt to grade to in order to reach his first Kyu brown Belt. Ms da Silva said a year later he will be ready for his black belt. Jakota Karate is a family club with parents and children of all ages training together. “It is wonderful to see the students achieve new goals and I’m sure that we will continue to see this throughout next year,” said Ms da Silva.
