Scenic Rim Australia Day Awards

CELEBRATING SCENIC RIM’S SPIRIT

The strong sense of community that shone through during recent bushfires in the east and west of the region was celebrated in the presentation of the 2020 Scenic Rim Australia Day Awards. Presented in conjunction with a citizenship ceremony where 57 members of the Scenic Rim community officially became Australians, the awards honoured some of the brave men and women involved in the firefighting effort as well as the community champions who work tirelessly behind the scenes to support grassroots organisations. Scenic Rim Mayor Greg Christensen presented Citizen of the Year Awards in three age categories, the Mayor’s Award for an outstanding individual across all categories, a Special Commendation for Community Involvement and a special Scenic Rim Region Award recognising the service and sacrifice of fire emergency service volunteers during the September to December 2019 fires across the Scenic Rim. Cr Christensen said it has been a challenging time for many in the region with drought and bushfire. “From my first-hand involvement with the bushfires I am also very aware of the personal impact that these have had on many people throughout the Scenic Rim,” he said. “We owe a huge debt of gratitude to the tremendously brave men and women involved in these firefighting efforts.”

The Scenic Rim Region Award was received on behalf of all Emergency Services and presented by Mayor Greg Christensen.

“They faced the most challenging of conditions and fought tirelessly to save lives and property across our region.” “It’s evident our emergency service personnel put life and limb on the line to help protect local communities.” “It was not just those on the fire lines logistics, planning, communication and our SES played a strong support role.” Many of the nominees for the Citizen of the Year Awards were among those who

Citizen of the Year 16-30 Years Grace McDonald

Boonah State High School’s captain of 2019, Grace McDonald, was nominated for inspiring other students to step up and become involved in their school and local community. Grace was involved in school fundraising activities and was editor of the school magazine and an Interact member. Her efforts with Interact and fundraising resulted in Boonah State High School delivering 52 shoe boxes to Rotary for Timor Leste.

As First Officer of the Beechmont Rural Fire Brigade, Mark led his team to protect the Binna Burra/Beechmont community for 18 days in early September 2019. Mark was recognised for his bravery and clarity of purpose during the unprecedented September Sarabah bushfires, when fire fronts were 30 to 40 metres high and moving at speeds of up to 100 kilometres an hour in unpredictable directions. Mark’s nomination called for recognition for the service he and his team provided in ensuring that no residents or volunteer firefighters lost their lives during the dangerous bushfires. Mark said he was honoured to be selected as Scenic Rim Citizen of the Year. “I would like to dedicate this award to all the amazing volunteer members of Beechmont Rural Fire Brigade,” said Mark. SCENIC RIM AUSTRALIA Special Commendation for Community Involvement Kooralbyn Valley Community Development Association

The Kooralbyn Valley Community Development Association worked tirelessly in the months leading up to the Arts Ablaze Regional Arts Conference and Festival, with local volunteers hosting a number of working bees in readiness for guests of the event to camp on the grounds. They also managed the camping area during the event,

with volunteers working together to look after bookings, camping check-ins, the camp kitchen, and camper enquiries. This was a huge effort for the local volunteers and Scenic Rim Regional Council is grateful for their show of civic pride and for being an integral part of this wonderful event within the region.

Lesley Klan received the Mayor’s Award for her service to the Rathdowney community.

Treatment Plant Online After Rainfall

Following recent rainfall, Seqwater has brought its Canungra Water Treatment Plant and Tanker Filling Station back online. As Canungra Creek is flowing again, the treatment plant has returned to normal operations and there is no longer a requirement for tankering water to the town. Urban Utilities spokesperson, Michelle Cull, said although the water treatment plant is back online it was still important for everyone to continue to be water wise. “As Canungra is not connected to the SEQ Water Grid and relies on a local water source, water restrictions will remain in place to preserve water storage levels,” she said. “We encourage everyone to continue to be vigilant in saving water.” “Water usage in Canungra is now around 100 litres per person per day and we’d like to say a big thank you to the community for its efforts.” Cr Virginia West said she was pleased that the community had significantly reduced the water usage. “I would like to acknowledge how amazing the community have been to reach 100 litres per person,” said Virginia.

Increased Canungra Creek flows following rainfall have enabled the Water Treatment Plant and Tanker Filling Station to be reopened.

A Seqwater spokesperson said customers may notice a slight change in the water taste, however assured residents the water meets stringent Australian Drinking Water Guidelines. Seqwater will continue to monitor the flows in Canungra Creek and the community will be kept informed of any updates.

Scenic Rim Receives $1m Funding Boost

Federal Member for Wright, Scott Buchholz and Scenic Rim Mayor, Greg Christensen have welcomed an announcement by the Australian Government for further Disaster Funding for the region. The Australian Government announced $60 million in further assistance for 42 local government areas across Australia, including an urgent $1,000,000 funding boost for Scenic Rim. The funding will be provided through the National Bushfire Recovery Agency, to assist Council with clean-up and recovery efforts following the 2019 bushfires. Federal Member for Wright, Scott Buchholz welcomed the Prime Minister’s announcement and said he had been putting the case for further assistance. “The Scenic Rim has been hit hard on a number of fronts by recent bushfires. We were one of the communities first hit, with the Canungra, Beechmont, Illinbah and Sarabah fires in September 2019. “Following that, we experienced further fires at the other end of the district, in Tarome, Aratula, Moogerah and up Cunninghams Gap,” Mr Buchholz said.

A Council spokesperson said there is an expectation from Canberra to have a focused plan in place in three months time. “We have been gathering ideas from a wide range of people across our community, remembering that we have affected communities from the very east to the west of the region,” he said. “The possibilities are quite extensive and the focus will be on ensuring we are

giving reasonable consideration to all those possibilities.” “We do understand that some of the things that people have asked us to spend it on would be outside the guidelines, for example making direct payments to affected people.” “We encourage people across our communities who wish to contribute ideas to contact Council at mail@scenicrim.qld.gov.au,” he said.

Bendigo Bank Pitch Night

Following the success of our pitch night last year, we have decided it’s time to do it again! Breaking out of the norm, Canungra & District Community Bank have decided to move forward with a new way to give back to our community this year. Rather than doing a sponsorship each quarter, we will be hosting two big pitch nights this year. This is a unique opportunity to promote your groups/club’s projects and tell us your story. If you’re an incorporated association or have a DGR status or are a community Not for Profit (NFP) organisation you may qualify! For inquiries or more information on how to be a part of the pitch night and secure some funds for your community group please contact the team at Canungra & District Community Bank. The first pitch night will be 6.30pm on the 19th March 2020 at the Canungra School of Arts Hall. Keep an eye on our facebook page for more updates.

Local

Government

Ahead of the Local Government Election on 28th March, The Canungra Times asked candidates who have announced for the positions of Mayor, Division 2 and Division 3 to provide information about themselves. In the interest of fairness and transparency, candidates are grouped by their Division and listed in alphabetial order.

Mayoral Candidates John Brent

Former Scenic Rim Regional Council Mayor John Brent said he believes attention needs to be given to providing value for money through improved services, strengthening the local economy through support of business and investment in infrastructure right across the region. “I am pleased that all of the major programs that were initiated during my time at the helm - including Eat Local Week, the Vibrant and Active Towns and Villages project, and the footpath, drainage and bridges programs - have remained in place,” said John.

Elections

“My initiative of the playground upgrades has also been delivered. I am eager to see these and other initiatives thrive and expand.” “During the period that I was Mayor, Council partnered with various businesses and State and Federal Governments to deliver major economic projects to the Scenic Rim such as the Beaudesert By-pass, the establishment of McAuley College and the jobs hub at the SCT Intermodal Inland Port at Bromelton.” John said the aspirations of residents could only be delivered by a Mayor and Councillors who worked co-operatively whilst respecting each other’s views, and they in turn worked in mutually respectful and close consultation with all members of the community. “Over the coming weeks, I will be expanding my community engagements across the region to further hear your views on how we can get the Scenic Rim back on track. I look forward to meeting with as many of you as possible.” he said. Greg Christensen

Scenic Rim Mayor, Greg Christensen, says his track record demonstrates that he offers the real leadership, vision and strength to continue to lead the council to secure a strong future. Greg won the role in 2016, from a field of five candidates, on a commitment to provide balanced leadership and advance the economic and social potential of the region. “During my term the Scenic Rim has been confronted with the seemingly impossible challenges of floods, drought and now a series of devastating bushfires”, he said. “Despite this, our region’s economy has set new records for total revenue and jobs growth. I have been proud to have witnessed our community’s resolve and resilience in what has been, and still is, a very difficult period.” Greg said since Cyclone Debbie, Council has delivered the biggest infrastructure recovery program in the Scenic Rim’s history.

Government

“Our road and bridge networks are now in the best condition they have ever been, providing strong transport corridors for vital economic and social connections.” “I am proud to have led a council that has maintained or increased investment in our grants programs for sports and recreation, community and environmental projects across our communities.” “In 2018, Council was recognised as the best council in Queensland for Risk Management – this shows the community can have confidence that this Council is acting responsibly and with clear focus.” “There is still more to complete in the modernisation and customer orientation of our Council organisation and to ensure we are balancing development and growth with preserving and nurturing our spectacular environment and the lifestyle which brings people here,” said Greg. My firm focus will continue on: • road and bridge infrastructure; • maintaining key service levels to residents being mindful of cost; • local employment and business attraction; • economic prosperity with a focus on agriculture, tourism and small business enterprise; • managing the many challenges of development and increasing population to our towns especially Beaudesert and Canungra. Summer Land Camels in the Scenic Rim

Nestled in the Scenic Rim township of Harrisville is Australia’s largest and most awarded camel dairy farm, Summer Land Camels. While it is primarily a dairy farm, Summer Land has also branched into tourism, providing meals, tours of the farm and camel rides. Everything is very reasonably priced and for a family it can be a relatively inexpensive day out, with camels in paddocks close by eager for attention and bags of feed available for only $2. Farm tours are available for $25 for adults and $15 for children, or visitors can prebook online for a camel ride for $15 per child and $20 per adult. Although they are very friendly, the camels are by nature very timid and the process of breaking them in for riding is much longer than a horse. It can take up to 12 months of slow, calm work for these gentle giants to gain the trust needed to be ridden. Once they are rideable, they provide a great way for visitors to view the farm and stunning surrounding countryside. The cafe is reasonably priced, and the camel’s milk gelato is a must to try. The texture is creamy and smooth, with delicate flavours. The camel burger is a surprise,

Summer Land Camels Farm Director, Paul with one of his favourite camels

with the sweet meat blending impecably with the camel cheese, a real delight. Most of the camels have been brought in wild from Central Australia. There are currently approximately 600 camels grazing on the property, which prides itself on their ethical, sustainable and organic farming principles.

The farm operates a training and breeding program as well as milking onsite and making their own award winning cheeses. Summer Land Camels is located at 8 Charles Chauvel Drive, Harrisville. Bookings are required for camel rides to avoid disappointment. For more information visit summerlandcamels.com.au.

Christmas Tree Appeal

From My Window

with Keer Moriarty, Editor Why Division 2?

Being the Editor of The Canungra Times for almost 10 years, I’ve been asked why I am running as a candidate in the local government elections in Division 2 and not Division 3 (which covers Canungra township). I thought I owed everyone an explanation. Working for the community as a Councillor has been on my mind for a long time. I enjoy the paper, and I am lucky to do something I love, but I feel I can do more as a Councillor. You all know how passionate I am about the area we live in, and the people, and I will bring that passion and honesty to any position I hold. Last year I moved to Beaudesert, and while I have no doubt that I will always have strong connections with Canungra and Beechmont, this places me in a good position to represent the people throughout Division 2 (which takes in Gleneagle, Veresdale Scrub, Tamborine Village, part of Tamborine Mountain and areas to the north west of Canungra such as Wonglepong, Boyland and Biddaddba). I have strong connections in all of these areas and will work hard to make sure I’m active in all parts of the division. Me being me, I will often base my decisions on what is most needed and I see a greater need for a strong representative in Division 2. It has been a difficult journey to reach this decision (both whether to run and which area) and it is the right one for me, and for Division 2. Having spoken to many Division 2 residents, there is a lot of work to be done there, and I’m really looking forward to it. I see the position of Councillor as representing the residents, of serving the community and I would be honoured to do this if elected. If I am elected, The Canungra Times will continue as it is today. I have plans in place to ensure that it will remain a community based newspaper which will remain the voice of the community. I would like to thank everyone for their support in this journey. From those who have been excited to have me running in Division 2, to those who have given advice and those who are giving practical assistance with the campaign. This response has been very humbling. I am truly blessed to be part of such a wonderful community. Thank you. Authorised by Keer Moriarty (candidate), Beaudesert. Page 16

Dear Editor, On behalf of the Canungra Uniting Church I would like to thank the local businesses and members of the community for their donations of food items, toys and books to our annual Christmas Tree appeal. Many thanks to Bendigo Bank who once again acted as a collection point. Because of the generosity shown by all, a record number of hampers were delivered to people in need over the Christmas season. Robyn Fyfe Acting Secretary, Canungra Uniting Church Council.

Letter of Praise

Good morning Firstly I would like to give our thanks to all of the emergency services who do not get enough acknowledgment or praise at times. In November I suffered a heart attack, and the local paramedics saved my life. Brett Fournier and his companions (not sure of their names) are heroes in my eyes. Brett did everything he could do and saved my life whilst at the same time keeping my husband calm and informed. I know Brett through our local Scenic Rim Sports Club where his brother is a member. Just wanted to say a very big thank you. Kerry Proctor

Canungra Chamber of Commerce

Dear Editor, I was honoured to be voted as President of the Canungra Chamber of Commerce in Dec 2019. Thank you to all the members for your encouragement and support. For those that don’t know me, I own Aussie Lifestyle Properties and this is my 15th year in business. I’ve lived in Canungra since 1996 and I’m very passionate about our town. I’m also involved in Turning Canungra Pink and coordinated the inaugural Canungra Campout in Oct 2019 which was a huge success! I have ideas to bring to the Chamber that I feel will benefit our businesses and community. I will encourage all businesses to work together, come up with ideas and events, that will make this town an even better place for visitors and our locals. To be a member of the Chamber your business doesn’t need to be a shop front, if you’re an electrician, mobile mechanic, personal trainer, whatever your business is, have your input into our great business community, for a small yearly fee of $72. Jump onto www.canungrachamberofcommerce.com.au and join today! Or pop into my office for a membership form. Meetings not your thing? That’s ok, you will receive email updates. Meetings are once a month and alternate mornings and evenings. We support our Chamber members, therefore we rotate around those businesses. Members enjoy a relaxed coffee at our next meeting on the 12th February, 7:30am at OWL wholefoods with guest speaker State Recovery Co-ordinator, Ian Stewart. I look forward to seeing you there. Let’s Do It Again

Following the success and wide acclaim received after their “Musical Allsorts” concert, the Kenny James Quartet will do it again at 4pm in the St Bernards Hotel Marquee on Sunday 16th February. Kenny James said the “Musical Allsorts” was not the usual concert fare where the audience sit and listen to what the band decides to play. “We simply asked the audience what they would like to hear and played requests all night,” said Kenny. “The requests covered a range of different styles of music which most bands would find very challenging to say the least, but the Kenny James Quartet with a combined experience of over 200 years handled it with consummate ease.” This concept was so popular with the audience, the band did not have enough time to play all the requests. There were people singing and dancing to their favourite songs and everyone had a ball. Many patrons asked when the next concert would be, so they have decided to perform again on 16th February. The Kenny James Quartet features some of Queensland’s finest musicians. Their “Let’s Do It Again” concert will have a similar format to “Musical Allsorts” but the music will be different depending on the requests received on the night. Don’t miss out on this extraordinary concert. To secure tickets and arrange tables, call Kenny on 0427 754 211 or call into the Thirsty Camel, Shop 4A, 13 Main Western Road, North Tamborine.

Open For Investment

The Scenic Rim Regional Council Investment Attraction Incentives Program, adopted at Council’s first meeting for the year on 20th January, is designed to give the Scenic Rim a competitive edge and make it easier for business to thrive in the region. Existing businesses and new investors will benefit from a case management approach by Council, which may include support ranging from concept meetings and pre-lodgement meetings through to assistance with development applications. There will also be the potential to defer infrastructure charges, on a case-by-case basis. Mayor Greg Christensen said it was about making it as easy as possible for businesses to thrive in the Scenic Rim. “The bottom line is we want businesses to succeed in the Scenic Rim to create valuable jobs for our locals and secure our region’s prosperity into the future,” he said. Cr Christensen said Council would also work with eligible businesses to ease the pressure of infrastructure charges. “These might include the deferral of infrastructure charges and other tailored assistance deemed appropriate by Council. There is no ‘on-size-fits-all’ approach, and Council will be working with businesses on a case-by- case basis. The Investment Attraction Incentive Program Policy and the Scenic Rim Investment Attraction Incentives Program - Infrastructure Charges Deferral Guideline will be released in early February 2020, once the overarching Scenic Rim Regional Prosperity Strategy 2020-2025 is adopted by Council. Council encourages any businesses and investors wishing to find out the Policy and Guidelines to contact Council’s Regional Prosperity team on 5540 5111.

New Planning Scheme A Landmark

The Scenic Rim will have its first unified planning scheme following Council’s adoption of the Scenic Rim Planning Scheme 2020 to commence in March. Mayor Greg Christensen said the adoption of the Scenic Rim Planning Scheme represented a landmark moment in region and thanked the residents, business operators and community organisations whose submissions had contributed to its development. “For the first time since the establishment of Scenic Rim Regional Council in 2008, we have a planning scheme which provides a consistent approach to development across our region,” he said. “Guided by the Scenic Rim Community Plan, the new planning scheme will underpin development aligned with the community’s shared vision for the Scenic Rim for the next 20 years.” “It will provide certainty to residents, businesses and investors by identifying land use in particular areas, informing Council’s plans for infrastructure to support growth and balance the social and economic development of the Scenic Rim and protecting and enhancing our region’s lifestyle and natural assets.” The planning scheme was approved this month by the Minister for State Development, Manufacturing, Infrastructure and Planning, Cameron Dick, following several years of drafting by Council, community consultation and review by the Queensland Government. The new planning scheme considers the risks of flood and bushfire in the region and has a focus on the protection of the Scenic Rim’s natural environment.

Scenic Rim Regional Council’s Mayor and Councillors congratulate members of the planning team following the adoption of the Scenic Rim Planning Scheme 2020

It provides for larger lot sizes for residential subdivisions than in other areas of South East Queensland and recognises the importance of tourism in supporting rural areas. Replacing the planning schemes of the former Beaudesert Shire, Boonah Shire and Ipswich City Council areas within the Scenic Rim local government area, the new planning scheme reflects changes to the economic, social and environmental landscapes, as well as meeting State legislative requirements. Importantly, it has been developed in the context of the Scenic Rim Community

Plan which captures the vision shared by Council and the Scenic Rim community for the region’s relaxed living and rural lifestyle and sustainable and prosperous economy into the future. Council has a five-year schedule for reviewing matters post-adoption, which will incorporate matters requiring further investigation. The new planning scheme takes effect on 20th March 2020 and will be available on Council’s website https://www.scenicrim. qld.gov.au.

Ask the Physio - Shoulder Pain

Shoulder pain is very common and can be extremely debilitating. Your shoulder has the greatest available range of movement of all the joints in your body. This large amount of mobility comes as a result of a small contact surface area between the humerus (upper arm) and the scapula (shoulder blade). The shoulder joint is a ball and socket joint with a big ball, and a very small socket – quite like a golf ball and tee. The collar bone (clavicle) further enhances the range of movement of this very well designed joint mechanism and the result of this relationship is increased movement but poor stability.

What

Geoff Ford, a new member of our team, specialises in shoulder pain and dysfunction and is able to measure degrees of dysfunction using the AxIT system. He can then treat the cause and expertly set you on the path to recovery. If you have a chronic shoulder condition you might be eligible for an EPC Plan from your GP. This will help towards the cost of your physiotherapy.

causes shoulder pain?

Possible causes include: • arthritis • torn cartilage • torn rotator cuff • swollen bursa sacs or tendons • bone spurs • irritated nerve in the neck or shoulder • fractured shoulder or arm bone • frozen shoulder • visceral pathology (liver, spleen) The most important thing when treating your shoulder pain is for your Physiotherapist to determine the cause of your pain and treat that accordingly. As there are many possibilities, it is usually necessary to have some form of scan to look into the structures of the shoulder region as well as your neck and upper back. Treatment will hopefully resolve any pathology and then rehabilitation will be in the form of specific exercises, progressed in a very particular way.

2020 Kia Carnival Platinum

Reviewed by Lee McKenzie-McKinnon, Editor, carandbikenews.com.au The modern age of Australia’s car market sees the SUV as the most popular car type, however, people movers (vans) are often overlooked. The Kia Carnival Platinum is top of the range in the Carnival list and carries up to eight people, with an airy and inviting cabin that exhibits plenty of clever details. There is also a surprising amount of space for luggage that doesn’t compromise seat space. The Carnival’s 3.3-litre GDI V6 produces 206kW and 336Nm ensuring a relaxed drive even with a full load. Now linked to the standard eight-speed automatic gearbox, the average fuel use is around 10.8 litres/100km. The Carnival received an upgrade in May 2019 and Kia has kept those up front in mind when the Carnival went through the design changes. This is clear the more you drive it as the large doors and lounge like seats give plenty of comfort. The dash is a model of clarity, and gives everything you need when driving. Decent size instrument dials, large and logically placed switchgear, excellent ventilation, and more storage compartments and receptacles, make the Kia intuitive to operate, even if the

Kia Carnival

central touchscreen does require a steady finger once you’re on the move. Sliding rear side-doors reveal huge openings that make access to Carnival’s middle and third seat-rows easy. The middle-row trio of seats offer versatility at a level rare in any vehicle. There is heaps of leg and head room, ample vision, face-level ventilation outlets, head rests, lighting, and storage, for all, make travelling in the rear compartments no trial. The Carnival has a range of standard active safety technologies, including Autonomous Emergency Braking, six airbags (front to rear coverage), eight three-point seat belts, Electronic Stability Control (incorporating ABS,

TCS, Hill Start Assist, Brake Assist, Cornering Brake Control and Roll Over Mitigation) and rear parking sensors. Standard safety features also include Lane Departure Warning, Smart Cruise Control and Electronic Parking Brake. For Platinum owners the active safety features expand even further with BSD (Blind-Spot Detection); LCA (Lane Change Assist), which alerts the driver to vehicles approaching from the rear at high speeds in neighbouring lanes; HBA (High Beam Assist) and RCTA (Rear CrossTraffic Alert), which warns against other cars driving behind the Carnival in car parks. Kia Carnival Platinum retails for $60,290 contact your local dealer for details.

Canungra’s History - Canungra Bowls Club Following from last month’s article on early Canungra Bowls Club members, the ladies and men ran separate clubs ie, ladies day was Wednesday, men’s day was Saturday and on Sunday they played together, often with visitors. The information on this table is sourced from the Canungra Ladies Bowls Club Cash Books (opened on 22nd June 1953 - 1978). In the early years most of the ladies were entered under their husband’s initials (Mrs K Curtis, ie Ken’s wife -- especially if both were members). The discs were used to help organise teams on playing days. D indicates that the member was still playing when the discs were being used. The 65 and 78 indicate that, of the founding members, these were still financial members of the Canungra Ladies Bowls Club in 1965 and 1978. In 1978 there were 43 members.

Restaurant Review

Bringing Back Binna Burra By The Full-Bodied Foodie The loss of Binna Burra Lodge on Beechmont has been met with an outpouring of emotion from people across Australia. Those with fond memories of holidays at the popular eco-tourism resort were devastated to see the footage of the Lodge following the September bushfires. The resilience of the managment and staff has been admirable, with a small core group pushing through to continue the work of the Lodge and reopen later this year. Part of the recovery effort has been the opening of the scenic Headmasters Café at the roundabout on Beechmont Road by the Binna Burra staff. All proceeds from the cafe go directly to rebuilding Binna Burra Lodge and the menu is based on the Binna Burra Tea House menu. The cafe is in a beautiful picturesque setting and you can dine either inside the quaint cottage style building, or out on the verandah. All your standard cafe favourites are on the menu from Eggs Benedict and Toasted Sandwiches included on the breakfast menu and burgers, quiche and Binna Burra’s famous Beef Pies on the lunch menu. Prices range from $8 for scrambled eggs through to $20 for a garden salad with chicken. Vegetarian and gluten free options are avilable for many of the dishes and there is also a great selection of cakes and snacks in the cabinet. Binna Burra staff are waiting to take your order on Fridays from 6am to 6pm, Saturdays from 6am to 6pm, and Sundays from 6am to 3pm. The Headmaster’s Cafe is located at 1/1835 Beechmont Road, Beechmont. For more information see their Facebook page or visit binnaburralodge.com.au.

Council Comment By Cr Virginia West, Scenic Rim Regional Council

New Planning Scheme

Scenic Rim Regional Council recently adopted the region’s first planning scheme, which brings together the planning schemes of the former Councils of Beaudesert Shire, Boonah Shire and Ipswich City. The new, unified document was approved and signed off in late December by the Minister for State Development, Manufacturing, Infrastructure and Planning, Cameron Dick, following a number of years of drafting by Council, community consultation and review by the Queensland Government. The scheme, which takes effect on 20th March 2020, will be available on Council’s website. Developed in conjunction with the Community Plan, the new planning scheme takes into account flood and bushfire risks, protection of the natural environment, tourism and larger lots sizes in residential subdivisions than in other adjoining South East Queensland council areas. As with all planning schemes, a number of amendments may be necessary especially following the Growth Management Plan to be conducted in the first half of this year.

It was my pleasure to help present the Scenic Rim’s Australia Day Awards and to see a record number of Scenic Rim residents become our newest citizens on Australia Day. Australia Day this year was a time to acknowledge and thank so many members of the Scenic Rim community who offered their services and assistance to fellow residents during the bushfires from September to December last year. There are too many people to thank individually and so this year a special Scenic Rim Region Award was presented to acknowledge the service and sacrifice of emergency service volunteers during what was such a challenging time for our region. The award also recognised the contribution of those behind the lines and members of the SES. Thank you to all those who nominated members of the community for the Citizen of the Year awards. I would like to congratulate all the nominees for the significant contribution they make to our community and the very worthy award winners: Grace McDonald, Mark Ayers, Frank White, Lesley Klan and the Kooralbyn Valley Community Development Association.

Holiday In Australia

The new Tourism Australia campaign to encourage international tourists to “Holiday Here this Year” has just been released and Scenic Rim features Jane O’Reilly, from O’Reilly’s Rainforest Retreat, inviting visitors to visit our spectacular region. This is hugely exciting for our region to be included with so many larger areas. Take a look at the video on Tourism Australia’s Facebook page www. facebook.com/SeeAustralia/posts/ The message to us all this year is to holiday at home and help our fire and drought-affected areas to recover.

Binna Burra Hospitality At Beechmont Old School

What a winning situation this is, not only for the Binna Burra team but also for the Beechmont Area Progress Association, which manages the site, and for the Beechmont community. Residents and visitors can now enjoy a delicious coffee and food and even a cold beer or wine. Hours are from 6am to 6pm on Fridays and 6am to 3pm on Saturdays and Sundays.

Congratulations Canungra Muay Thai

What a tribute to Dave and the Club to have four young Canungra residents chosen to attend the World Titles in Thailand in March! I know the town wishes you all every success and you have certainly put Canungra and the Scenic Rim on the map.

Are You Eligible For Rates Assistance? Residents and businesses across the Scenic Rim will receive their January Council rates notices this week. While Council rates contribute to the cost of maintaining and improving a wide range of essential community services and facilities, Mayor Greg Christensen said it was timely to remind communities of the support that is available for residents and businesses who may be experiencing financial hardship. “We recognise that some people in our communities are suffering financially and there are also ratepayers impacted by the ongoing drought and recent bushfires and we want to let them know there is help available from Council,” Cr Christensen said. “The last thing we want is for people to feel additional stress and uncertainty about their ability to pay rates and charges within the timeframes on the notices.” “We recognise that everyone is in a unique situation and may be impacted by illness or loss of employment, and we would encourage them to speak with Council about the options available to them.” In addition to general financial hardship, Cr Christensen said Council also has drought rate relief for primary producers whose rated property is their primary source of income. “While we’ve seen some welcome rain over the past week or so, this is certainly not enough to break the drought yet, and we know primary producers have been doing it tough over this period,” he said. Council’s latest rate relief extends to eligible landowners directly impacted by the recent bushfires who can defer their January and July 2020 rates notices until 31st December 2020. “The eligibility period for Council’s temporary bushfire rate relief aligns with the activation dates for Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements as defined by the Queensland Reconstruction Authority,” Cr Christensen said. “This is classified as Southern Queensland Bushfires from 6th to 12th September 2019, and the Eastern Queensland Bushfires, which impacted the western part of the Scenic Rim, from 8th November to 19th December 2019. “The important message from Council is for landowners who have been adversely and directly impacted by the bushfire events that this support is available to them.” Residents and business operators wishing to access drought or bushfire rate relief will need to make direct contact with Council’s rates team. More generally, if other landowners and residents are suffering hardship and having difficulty paying rates, they can contact Council to discuss available payment options. The latest rate payments are due by 20th February 2020 and Council offers a five per cent discount on general rates (where applicable) for payments received on or before the due date for payment.

Canungra RSL Sub-Branch News By Col Lee, President, Canungra RSL Sub Branch

War Animals Remembrance Day

This year, there will be a special memorial service held at the War Animals Memorial, D J Smith Memorial Park, Monday 24th February, commencing at 10.30am. Please, if you would like to lay a floral tribute you are encouraged to do so. The colour for the day is purple. We are hoping to have light horsemen and their mounts present and RAAF guard dogs.

ANZAC Day

Last year’s attendance to both Anzac Day services was outstanding, and this year the Canungra RSL Sub-Branch is expecting an even bigger gathering. For now, Ms Rebecca Lloyd has so graciously offered to sing for us again. Those of you who were at the Drawn and Mid-Morning services last year, will remember her beautiful voice as she sang the opening number, Amazing Grace and finished both services with the New Zealand and Australian National Anthems.

Remembrance Day

It’s sad that Remembrance Day goes by with very little attention. Look at your latest calendar and the day probably isn’t highlighted. Yet, in North America, and throughout Europe, citizens turn out in huge numbers to commemorate the day. More about Remembrance Day as we get closer to November. In the meantime, please highlight Wednesday 11th November 2020 in your diary, so you too can remember them.

The majority of Australia’s birds of prey can be observed in South-east Queensland. However, some are easier to see than others. One such bird is the Square-tailed Kite. This raptor can be recognised by its distinctive white face and reddish-brown underparts. Square-tailed Kites can be mistaken for species such as Black Kite and Red Goshawk. Black Kite are darker brown in colour and have a forked tail. Red Goshawks have reddish brown upperparts and underparts and more barring on the underside of their flight feathers. Square-tailed Kites occur in a wide range of habitats including rainforest, eucalypt forest, heathlands and timbered watercourses. Their range extends throughout most coastal areas of Australia not including Tasmania. Throughout this range, the birds are rare and hard to see. Interestingly, I have seen Square-tailed Kite remain in the same vicinity for many years and are very localised whilst breeding. The birds may breed from July to December. The bird photographed at a nest in the picture provided was demonstrating breeding behaviour in September. Squaretailed Kites will build a stick nest high in the canopy of a suitable tree but may also use old stick nests of other species. Some of the best views I have had of Square-tailed Kites have been in outer urban regions of Brisbane that still have significant stands of tall eucalypt forest. These areas include Daisy Hill and Bellbird Park. Birds will happily utilise areas where housing is present as long as sufficient habitat is available. For anyone wanting to see Square-tailed Kite it is usually a case of observing the birds when you least expect them. I would suggest, as I do with all birds, to get to know their call so that if one is in the vicinity and calling, you would be alerted to its presence. These birds are incredibly beautiful to watch and if you do have the privilege of observing these birds for any length of time, make the most of your time with them. I spend a lot of time out and about watching birds and this is one species that I do not see very often. I always consider it a major highlight when I spend any time with this beautiful raptor.

The Cane Toad - Killing Native Wildlife By Susan Cully These toxic pests, resembling frogs, look and feel tasty to a quoll, a snake, a goanna, but are killing many native species that eat them. Indigenous Rangers have reported birds that fall dead from the sky after eating a Cane Toad. They have been waiting a long time for some rain this summer but are in their element now. Fresh dams and puddles and places to meet their toad friends and make a family. You can hear their ‘rat a tat tat’ call, like a small petrol engine, on a summer night. The call can be heard a kilometre away, a very effective way to line up a potential spouse. The female cane toad is very productive, laying up to 30,000 eggs twice in one season. But the eggs hatch as tadpoles within 24-72 hours, and then need only 20 weeks to be ready to mate themselves. Proof of this breeding success is the fact that there are now an estimated 200 million Cane Toads, just 85 years after 102 Cane Toads were introduced in 1935. The beetle they came to control is of little interest to them, living just out of reach of a toad that can’t climb a sugar cane stalk. They are opportunists, eating everything from their natural diet of beetles as well as food scraps and pet food. They are tree-changers and sea-changers, they live in open forests, grasslands, swamps, beach dunes, farmland and suburban areas. Not fussy, they can use brackish water to breed in. Very happy in Australia, some have been known to reach 2.5kg and 26cm in length. Want to help? Google a few topics... • Citizen Science, the ‘Cane Toad Challenge’ working to reduce tadpole numbers. • WWF campaign: ‘10 facts about Cane Toads’. • Qld Frog Society campaign ‘Be Toadally Sure.’ Learn to distinguish Cane Toads from our beautiful native frogs.

News from St Luke’s By Di Ayscough The word ‘reliability’ has sprung to mind as I think back over the past few weeks. What has happened in your life where you have been relied on by someone or something? Maybe through the school holidays children have relied on their parents, grandparents or friends to keep them entertained, to provide food, to provide a safe environment or to take them where they needed to go. Reflecting on the word reliable I also think of ‘trust’. Who do you trust? Certainly, we all need to trust our family and our friends. Children need to have trust and with the new school year already started parents will trust their children will be happy and safe during each day. I remind you of the children’s program at St Luke’s on Monday afternoons from 3.00pm till 4.00pm. We recently discovered at St Luke’s how much we rely on each other. With our organist away, we realized how much we rely on Ann to provide our music. Our singing was very humble without Ann’s music. The AGM of St Luke’s guild also relies on volunteers to take on the usual important roles to organise functions, raise funds and support the congregation. This involves good team work and trusting each other. While sometimes we can feel disappointed with our fellow man, it is important to remember we can always trust God. He will never let you down or forsake you. I always think of those words “Trust in the Lord with all of your heart and lean not on your own understanding”. I trust you will all have a great year and if you need to find a reliable and trustworthy place to go, you would be always welcome at St Luke’s.

Sport Canungra Owls Soccer Club By Bren Dalby Well we are off to a flying start to the year … but it is not too late to sign on for a great season of soccer guys! A great opportunity awaits any youngsters of 13 years and older to partake in a Level 4 Referee Course on 23rd February and earn some really good dollars for reffing younger teams this year, and awakening a love of reffing to go on and make some serious money down the track a little way after another course. Please contact the club for more info. Please support the Owls , this is one of the longest running and biggest sports clubs we have and it is great to be part of it. Check out the Canungra Owls Soccer Club Facebook page for more news and regular updates!

Bushfire Icon Passes Away

Tara, the 26 year old Arabian mare evacuated from the Canungra fires on 8th September 2019 has passed away from colic. Colleen Shields was one of many horse owners who assisted with livestock evacuations during the September fires. On 8th September, she got a call to evacuate a mare who had suffered burns in the fires. “We had to drive up a bush track to get to her as the main roads in and out of the property were still burning either side of the road,” said Colleen. “When we arrived I saw Tara stood in the only part of the property that hadn’t been burned yet. I noticed her burns before I even got out of the car. As I walked toward her she let out a soft nicker as if to say “help me”. I loaded her up and took her to Canungra Showground where we had already organised a volunteer vet to assess her, meanwhile Michelle and Lynne let the property owners know we were moving her.” The burns were horrific, but Tara was treated immediately and moved to another location where she could heal in a clean, quiet environment. The following weeks she was cared for by another volunteer, Bek. Colleen says without Bek her wounds wouldn’t have healed anywhere near as well as they did. Tara’s owner soon realised that she couldn’t afford the recovery so offered her to Colleen who fell in love with the mare as soon as she saw her. Unfortunately, on 7th January, Colleen woke up to Tara suffering from a bout of colic. Despite veterinary treatment, they were unable to save her. Colleen says Tara will forever be remembered by so many people as a beacon of hope to those who lost so much in the Canungra fires in 2019. “I can never thank the volunteers who helped me get Tara out safely, those who checked in on her recovery afterwards, those who took such great care of her during her recovery and those who helped me grieve after I lost her,” said Colleen. Rest In Peace, Tara.

Moriarty Park News with Bren Dalby How did we manage to get to February so quickly??! To be fair we struggled to get Sportsperson of the Year organised and word out to all nominees as so much is happening in everyone’s and certainly my life atm. This will go to print prior to the results but will thank Tony and Anne at Canungra Foodworks for fully sponsoring this event and congratulate all nominees; we have a varied array of talents and talented people in this area! Social tennis is on a Monday night at present, from 5.30pm so come along for a ‘hit’ when you can; you will always be welcome. We are ready to commence work on the book-a-court online booking system shortly which will make life easier for all. Thank you to Bendigo Bank for covering our not insubstantial yearly fees to Tennis Australia as an ongoing aid to us … without which we really couldn’t have committed to this project, and to SRRC for a good proportion of the remaining amount to get the ball rolling – or soaring across the net in this case! I would love to see more of our new and rapidly growing community pop in to a meeting and see what we are all about at Moriarty Park; again you will always be welcome and meetings are the third Monday of the month at 7.35pm (straight after Karate). We have Tae Kwon Do and Yoga as well as Karate at our hall and the facility is available for hire for parties, weddings etc at reasonable rates – we want the hall used

Having fun at Trivia!

from The Hub, My Country Escape, Canungra Hardware, and Jean Comley’s delish eggs. Go Ballooning gave us some vouchers which is brilliant – at the Canungra Hardware you can purchase a ticket for $5 of which there are only 100 – to have a shot at winning two Hot Air Balloon rides and a Champagne Breakfast at Canungra Hub! Good odds so have a shot!!! Any enquiries about Moriarty Park please contact Bren on 0414 435 919, email bren. dalby@bigpond.com or contact Alesia on 0402 167 966.

as much as possible now we have it looking good! We have had a couple of fun fundraising events – Bingo and Trivia – for our local Muay Thai club as we are delighted with their achievements and want to support in particular the four members and Coach David Torrens who are off to the World Titles in Thailand soon. This is an amazing achievement and I hope we, as the super community we are, will help them in any way we can. We have already had raffle prizes (and will welcome greatly any others please)
