Canungra Creek Irrigation Ban

Farmers along Canungra Creek have been advised by the Canungra Creek Water Advisory Committee to stop all irrigation as the water levels in the Creek continue to drop. Committee Secretary, Michael Fraser, said he has been in contact with the Department of Natural Resources, Mining and Environment (DNRME) to discuss irrigation practices in the area. “We have elected to place Canungra Creek on an irrigation ban until the water situation improves,” said Mr Fraser. “That means that people are entitled to pump from the Creek for household use and for animals but it stops there.” “We seek the cooperation of everybody and as soon as the situation improves they will be advised.” “In years gone by Canungra Creek Water Advisory Committee worked with Scenic Rim Regional Council to ensure Canungra had enough water for its needs.” “The farmers don’t want Canungra to be in a

situation where the town has water carted for use,” he said. The responsibility for water was removed from Council in 2008 and handed over to Seqwater. Mr Fraser said the Committee now liaises only with DNRME. Local resident Dan Piacun has lived on Canungra Creek for 20 years and said people may need to rethink their perception of water conservation. “The last couple of years the weather hasn’t been good, February rain is about all we’ve had,” said Mr Piacun. “My family have never bought water, but we have 70,000 litres in tanks and we have to manage what we use.” “Maybe people need to look at more water storage and Council needs to stipulate that.” “They say 150 litres per person per day is good, but that is still a lot of water.” “At the end of the day, we need rain,” he said. State Member for Scenic Rim, Jon Krause MP said Urban Utilities and Seqwater need to main-

Michael Fraser, Stephen Geiger and John Kelleher from the Canungra Creek Water Advisory Committee. Photo: Katherine O’Brien. “Seqwater needs to get to work on a longterm solution - I’ve told them that. In the meantime I will be calling on the State Government to freeze residential zones as they are now - so no new areas are added for housing apart from what’s already set aside - until a better water supply is guaranteed. “Tankering water every year is not a solution.” “This situation shows

tain supply for locals on and off the town water network. “Once again, Canungra and farmers on Canungra Creek are bearing the burden of bad planning decisions - primarily by the State, but some that Council have gone along with too readily over the years - that have permitted lots of new homes on town water, but not enough new water storage or supply investment, said Mr Krause.

Reegan Receives Humanity Award Reegan Pollard of Canungra State School and Amelia Stanford of St Bernard State School have been recognised for compassion, integrity and kindness at a virtual ceremony for the Fred Hollows Humanity Award on Friday 20th November 2020. The Humanity Award is a national initiative of The Fred Hollows Foundation that acknowledges Year 6 students who follow in Fred’s footsteps by demonstrating humanitarian values towards others. Reegan was nominated by family friend Carlie Simpson for her compassion. “In 2016 our daughter Blakely was born with a rare form of cancer. She now has Cerebral Palsy and is non-verbal. Reegan includes Blakely in all social activities,” Ms Simpson said.

“As parents our fear sometimes for our child ‘without a voice’ is that she will not be heard. “This year Reegan very graciously insisted on cutting off her long hair, even with her primary school graduation being in November. She has raised just over $3,000 for kids’ cancer treatment. “Reegan also began learning Auslan at home before joining our family for lessons. She committed to doing this to ensure she can continue to communicate with Blakely.” Amelia was nominated by teacher Janelle Menzies for empowering other students in her community. “From the moment Amelia started at St Bernard State School she has displayed a very high level of emotional intelligence. Her peers and teachers voted Amelia as

the school captain during 2020,” Ms Menzies said. “2020 has created many challenges and the need for connection has been strong. Amelia identified the need for a place for children to play and lobbied the local council to have a basketball court built in the local area.” This year, 23 students from Queensland were nominated and recognised at the ceremony. Founding Director of The Fred Hollows Foundation Gabi Hollows congratulated 254 students from across the nation, for their kindness, compassion and integrity. “This year, more than ever, it’s important to recognise these values,” Gabi Hollows said. “Fred would have been incredibly proud of the contribution these students are making to society, no matter how big or small their actions.”

HUMANS CANUNGRA of

Donna Purtill By Keer Moriarty Photography by Katherine O’Brien Photography

Donna Purtill has a great passion for health and well being, which makes her the ideal owner of OWL Wholefoods! She is also a busy mum and balances the needs of her family with home schooling and running her business - how does she do it all?

As well as running OWL Wholefoods, you’re also Mum to two girls. Three. I have three girls. (Embarrassed) Where did the extra one come from? I’ve got Jordy who is 22, Maddy who is 19 and Zoe who is 14. How is it running the business and being a Mum? It’s hard trying to find a balance. Because I’m home schooling Zoe at the moment too, so it is hard to get time for everything. How long have you been home schooling? For about three to four months. The school has been great, she does distance education through Charters Towers. She only has to do English, Maths and Art, so it’s not a full schedule. You can go into the recordings, you don’t have to log into the class. So when I get home I go through things with her so I can

catch her up. Do you feel like you are teaching her? Yeah. I wouldn’t know what to do - I can’t even help my Year 10 daughter with her homework. Well, I have to call Maddy. I go “Mads, can you help with this?” and she’s like “Yeah Mum, you just do this, this and this”. To be honest I’m finding it interesting, especially the Art, that’s fun. English, that’s not too bad. She was doing a report on 12 Angry Men which was written in 1954 or something and she finds it quite boring but I really like it. So the business has grown a lot recently? It is big days. I’m in there most mornings at 6am and home at 6pm. Days off aren’t really days off but that’s what it is like when you run your own business. It is good to be so busy. Why did you want to go into a Health Food Shop? I had a few health

problems myself. Mostly gut problems. I went to doctors and had so many tests but no answers. So I looked to the natural side of things and it has taken me a few years but I am so much better now. I had pain all day, couldn’t sleep at night. They wanted to medicate me. I decided not to take the medication and went down the natural route instead. Best decision I made. With Zoe, she has ASD, we took all preservatives and additives out of her diet and she doesn’t have a lot of sugar. We’ve seen a lot of changes in her since we’ve done that. She would go from zero to a hundred just like that! Was it directly related to something she had eaten or general diet? General diet. For example, she can’t eat McDonald’s and stuff like that. We just see it straight away, she flares up. With Dean and the

Donna Purtill girls, if they have something they don’t usually have, they notice it. Organic food just tastes better. Do you grow vegies at home? We don’t at the moment, we have a few herbs and things but we don’t really have time with the shop as well. What’s Dean (Donna’s husband) doing now? He’s working in the construction industry, which is good because he is at home a lot more. Does that help with you juggling the shop and family, with Dean being home? Definitely. He is a big

help, he does all the yard work and cooks meals at night. When we had the other business he was away a lot and there is no way I could have done this then. Things like looking after the swimming pool, makes a difference. So the shop has been all consuming for you in the last 12 months? Very. I tend to be focussed when I do something like that and I have to pull myself back and say, get some balance, like time with my beautiful family.

The Night Before Christmas - Canungra Style

Dear Canungra Community, The team at My Country Escape would like to wish you a very Merry Christmas and a happy New Year. This has been an incredibly hard year for some and we are so grateful for your ongoing support and love. We look forward to welcoming all your smiling faces in 2021 please stay safe over the holidays. Michelle and the team

‘Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the town not a soul to be seen, not uptown or down. The decorations were hung on the main street with care, in hopes that Santa soon would be there. The children were nestled all snug in their beds, while visions of presents danced in their heads. And Bren with her bagpipes in the Hotel did play, an AC/DC song, to the Top it’s a Long Way. The Church at St Mary’s was full to the brim, and last minute gym goers train with Steve and Kym. While down at O’Reilly’s the alpacas came, when Jen and Steve Pack called them all by name: “Now Snowball! Now Tim Tam! Now, Macca and Chico! Ed Sheeran! Prince Harry! On, Teddy and Taco! To the end of the valley! And over the hill! Now dash away! Dash away! Dash away still!” They carted the sleigh, filled with local bought gifts, Delivering world wide, and doing so in shifts. But I heard Jen and Steve say, as they drove out of sight, “Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good night!”

Give a Bee a Home This Christmas SHOP

There is nothing quite like receiving a truly unique gift at Christmas. Why not go one better and give a gift that is also good for the environment? Little Bee & Me stocks Bee Hotels which are hand made by inmates at Palen Creek Correctional Centre. Custodial Correctional Officer, Russell Standford, said the bee hotels provide the inmates with constructive work and helps the environment by providing homes for native bees. “It started with planting bush foods and nesting boxes,” said Russell. “We wanted something

that gave inmates gainful employment, so now they are learning carpentry skills and helping to save the environment at the same time.” “When we started making the bee hotels, the only ones on the market were imported bee hotels so they are an import replacement using recycled materials.” Alex Griffiths from Little Bee & Me said the bee hotels attract native solitary bees. However, other insects may also utilise the space. Insects that will happily co-habit include wasps, beetles, flies, and lizards. “It is best to place your bee hotel outside in a

place where it is protected from the elements,” said Alex. “On a deck, under the eaves or in a sheltered area. High traffic areas will discourage bees from inhabiting the hotels and try to place it off the ground to deter ants.” The bee hotels are hand painted in a variety of designs and colours. Little Bee & Me also has a range of plants available for sale and Alex can help with advice about caring for your bee hotel. Little Bee & Me is located on the corner of Kidston Street and Lawton Lane, behind OWL Wholefoods.

Adopt a Grandparent This Christmas SHOP T his LOCAL C hristmas

Canungra residents can adopt a grandparent this year by giving gifts to people in Roslyn Lodge and Whiddon Beaudesert aged care facilities. Adopt a Grandparent Coordinator, Kelly Casey, started the program after her own grandparents went into aged care and she met people who didn’t have regular visitors. Residents of Roslyn Lodge and Whiddon Beaudesert provided tags with their names and gift ideas. Some of these are as simple as dark chocolate, Pepsi Max or copies of TV Week. To provide a gift, go to Canungra Hub, take a tag

off the tree and return it with your gift provided in a gift bag. All gifts will be delivered to the aged care facilities, adhering to COVID regulations. Adopt a Grandparent started with 10 residents in two nursing homes. In 2019 it reached over 300 residents across ten aged care facilities. “I have done this for the past two years - this is my third,” said Kelly. “Giving these people something little makes them feel good and can make their Christmas day.” Kelly asked for gifts to be taken to Canungra Hub by 15th December.

TAMBORINE MOUNTAIN COLLEGE Tamborine Mountain College End of Year Success and Celebration 2020 has been a most unusual year with COVID. Tamborine Mountain College had great plans for its 25th Anniversary celebration this year, but unfortunately were unable to hold any public events. Home Based Learning (HBL) became a way of life in Term 2 and once back on campus for Term 3 things were very different – no volunteers, no camps, no excursions, no sport, no interstate travel, no international travel to Paris for their “Sister School” partnership. Normal life as we knew it no longer existed and a new norm of social distancing and sanitiser took over. College Principal Mrs June Melbourne acknowledged Mrs Fiona Stevens, Head of Secondary and Mr Mark Stevens, Head of Primary, for their leadership with HBL and management of COVID regulations and commended TMC Board, teachers and staff for adjusting so well, as did students and parents. Despite it all, TMC Year 12 was prepared for the new ATAR system with external exams. The TMC Award Ceremony had to be modified to accommodate the COVID requirements so several ceremonies were held on campus: • To recognise Graduating Classes for Yr 12, Yr 6 and Pre-Prep. • To recognise Award Recipients across the whole campus • To recognise Yr 12 Early Entry Offers to University • To recognise major achievements this year (and there have been many despite COVID!)

Page 18

• To recognise the College’s milestone of 25 years. TMC announced that again this year there were many examples across the whole campus of Victory and Valour (the College motto): • Year 12 success educationally is highlighted by 12 early entry offers into university before results even come out – offers were made to TMC students from Southern Cross University, ANU, GU, UNE and Bond University. • Bond University offered two TMC students The Excellence Scholarship, awarded for high academic achievement and leadership. • TMC Lions Youth of the Year Regional Winner that comes with a prize for international travel (one day!). • TMC student receiving Zonta Young Women in Public Affairs Award 2020; SRRC Youth Parliament Member (passed a Youth Education Bill). • Only Term 1 allowed Debating competition and only Yr 12 were allowed to compete in Public Speaking. • Two TMC Opti-Minds teams (combined Yr 6 and 7) – Language / Literature and Science / Engineering with video presentations gained Honours and the Science/Engineering Team took out the Spirit Award. • TMC ArtsFest was delivered via TMC website over a week to display talent in the Early Learning Centre, Primary and Secondary: Band, Drama, Music, Choir, craft and fabulous Art works.

• TMC Early Learning Centre was awarded Highly Commended for the Scarecrow Festival. • Drama performances – both “12 Angry Jurors” by Drama Excellence and the Primary production of “The Wizard of Oz” performed three times to audiences, abiding by COVID regulations for audience size. • Leo Club and SRC have still been busy organising Free-Dress Days for the students to bring back the joy on campus as well as raising funds and serving the community. • TMC MS Readathon raised $5,408! • Certificate levels achieved by Year 10, 11 and 12 in many fields of interest. • TMC Bands and instrumental music program continues to develop and entertain at events. • Several TMC Music students were selected for the State Honours Ensemble Program – Secondary and Primary. • TMC is part of the Independent Sporting Association for the major carnivals of swimming, cross-country and athletics, which of course did not happen this year. However the House Athletics Carnival was held with the winning House, Kyle, taking out the Melbourne Cup. Although sport was very limited this year, sporting achievement in Equestrian has been significant – TMC students were awarded the Derek and Rita Dobson Trophy for the school with the highest aggregate score in events covering Show-jumping, Dressage, Combined Training and Cross-Country. What a great result! Back in 2011 TMC won Qld Trophy for Interschool Competition Eventing. We look forward to more success for TMC Equestrian team. • TMC Graduating Year 6 is planning a wonderful on-campus picnic to celebrate. • TMC Graduating Year 12 has the Formal at the Intercontinental Sanctuary Cove. This year the College celebrated 25 years! Mr Nicholls, TMC Founding Principal, established the College in 1995 and would be so proud of it today, especially surviving COVID! TMC DVD this year is a tribute to this historical milestone (available www.tmc. qld.edu.au). College Principal Mrs June Melbourne said, “2020 has been a strange and difficult year but it is a pleasure to announce and focus on the positives – something that we all need to do in life and today highlights the positives yet again for the College with its wonderful successes!” The Canungra Times – December 2020

Harley (PW) for being a responsible and enthusiastic learner who always gives 100% in all learning areas.

Torah (2G) for being a role model for her peers and being a selfmotivated, independent learner at all times.

Jacob (4J) for being a quiet achiever who works hard and strives to do his best.

Levi (1N) for being a friendly, polite and respectful student who always puts in his best effort. Well done Levi!

James (5F) for being an enthusiastic learner with a growth mindset. His attitude to learning is absolutely brilliant.

From the Principal

for their dedication and contribution and wish them all the very best on their next adventure. Despite the difficulties 2020 presented we managed to offer a quality education and a range of activities for our students. Students enjoyed one season of interschool sport and Canungra State School won the netball trophy for the first time. We went ahead to cross country, athletics and soon the swimming carnival - all be it without the cheering from parents on the side line. Thanks to the dedi-

cation of the P&C we had our first Colour Run which was a huge success and raised a significant amount towards a new playground. I am proud of the way our school and our community supported each other and got on with the job of teaching and learning even with all of the disruptions and we couldn’t be face to face. The success of this is evidenced by outstanding end of year results achieved by students. High achievement but also great effort and the success of growing our

learning every year. The end of year also marks an important milestone for our senior Year 6 students. They have been very admirable leaders and have shown our younger students how to Aim High to achieve the best you can despite the challenges. Congratulations to each and every one of you, remember to always be the best you can be. There are two senior students who need to be recognised for their outstanding leadership – school captains Amy and Cooper. They fulfilled

their roles with pride, enthusiasm and flexibility. Congratulations Amy and Cooper, thank you for a great 2020. This year we have faced many challenges. As a team we worked out ways around or over these and a path forward doing the very best we can for our students and their future. Our students too have shown great character and perseverance and we, as a community should be proud of each and every one of them. Kylie Todhunter and Cindi Dare

What a year 2020 has been. It has been a year where we can truly appreciate what we have. The success of our staff was celebrated with the report received from the Education Improvement Branch, highlighting their commitment to the learning of students and their own learning. This year we farewell two long term staff members who have been transferred to other schools. We thank Mrs Jackson and Mrs Mann

A NOTICE FROM URBAN UTILITIES Canungra entered into drought response in June when flow in Canungra Creek dropped below seven megalitres per day. With no significant rainfall in the catchment recently, Canungra has progressed further into drought response. To ensure drinking water supply is maintained to the community, Seqwater will supplement town supply via tankers if flow in Canungra Creek stops, which will continue for as long as required. If Seqwater needs to take its Canungra Water Treatment Plant offline, we plan to maintain direct access to the Canungra tanker filling station for local off-network households through the 25mm outlet, however the 75mm outlet will be closed.

The Canungra Times – December 2020

Commercial carting operators will be directed to use alternative filling stations, with the closest being in Helen Street, Beaudesert. Medium level water restrictions remain in place in Canungra and most of the Scenic Rim. We ask you to continue to save water by limiting outdoor water use and adhere to the current restrictions as a minimum. Stay up to date with the latest information regarding water use in Canungra, tanker filling station status, and medium level restrictions via our website at urbanutilities.com.au/canungra Thank you for your ongoing water saving efforts.

Binna Burra Tea House Reopens

The newly Renovated Binna Burra Tea House is now open for breakfast, lunch and early dinner. Since the tragic loss of the Clifftop Dining Room and other heritage buildings during the catastrophic bushfires in September 2019, the Binna Burra Tea House has been partially closed whilst undergoing extensive renovations. The plans for the new Tea House were to accommodate a new Friday and Saturday evening a la carte dinner service, as well as a greater overall experience for day visitors and in-house guests. Binna Burra Management is excited to

announce that the Tea House is now open and the first stage of its renovations are complete. Visitors to Binna Burra Tea House can enjoy breakfast, lunch or an early dinner seven days a week, Sunday to Thursday 6:30am to 6:30pm, and Friday and Saturday 6:30am to 8:30pm. Binna Burra strives to support local suppliers and this menu is no exception. Key menu ingredients are sourced from sustainable businesses throughout the Scenic Rim. This comes also with a change in hours for Binna Burra’s Groom’s Cottage Bushwalker’s Bar, which

is open 3pm to 7pm Monday to Sunday for locally sourced share boards, select weekly dinner specials and locally sourced beer and wine. The communal campfire at Groom’s Cottage is lit each afternoon for the ultimate sundowner experience that guests of Binna Burra have been enjoying for 86 years. The new a la carte menu includes Caramlised Kalbar Pork Belly, Pea and Asparagus Risotto and Lavender Pannacotta. Dinner can be enjoyed Friday and Saturday 6:30pm to 8:30pm. Bookings are advisable, please call on 5533 3622.

Headmaster’s Café Reopens!

The Beechmont Area Progress Association (BAPA) has reopened the ‘The Headmasters Café’ after the recent closing of ‘Binna Burra Kitchen.’ Currently open on Saturdays and Sundays from 8am, BAPA has plans in the months ahead to obtain a liquor license and also host regular Friday evening get-togethers for locals and visitors to be able to catch up with each other and enjoy balmy evenings on the veranda. Located at the old school site at the Beechmont/Binna Burra Roads roundabout, The Headmasters Café has plenty of parking, breathtaking views of the Queensland and NSW border ranges, fresh tasty breakfasts and lunches, delicious cakes and slices, full bodied Di Bella coffee, a selection of teas and cold

drinks and great country hospitality. Come and support the community as it rebuilds after the devastating fires, eat local and enjoy the beautiful mountain climate.

Op Shop Closes and Last Market

The Op Shop situated next to The Headmasters Café will close on 20th December 2020. Locals and visitors are invited to come in each Saturday and Sunday until then between 10am and 2pm to make an offer on anything in the shop! The last Beechmont Country Market is also on 20th December. This is a great opportunity to buy handmade and bespoke Christmas gifts locally.

Calling All Dressmakers! 1. Are you a reasonably good sewist who loves making beautiful clothes for yourself in fabrics, styles and colours you like? 2 Do you love creating a unique look using your own design ideas and embellishments that make a personal statement and are not a copy of what everyone else is wearing? 3. Are you finding that despite all your machine skills, the end result doesn’t fit properly, the neckline or waistline seems to gape or the garment is too tight around the bust or hips? 4. Have you bought commercial patterns a few sizes bigger or smaller to allow for parts of your body that are non standard but then end up having to let out or take in other parts to fit better? 5. Does the end result end up an expensive, time-consuming, illfitting garment in the back of your wardrobe?

When it comes to a perfect fit, there’s nothing like having your own personalised body blue-print – a template of your own measurements from which you can create gorgeous clothes in dozens of different styles.

The Canungra Times – December 2020

Water Restrictions Canungra Creek has once again reached minimal flow and Urban Utilities (UU) has imposed water restrictions on the Canungra community as part of the level three drought response. SEQWater will commence tankering water into Canungra to maintain town supply and the tanker filling station will remain accessible for local off-network households (on tank water). Commercial operators are asked to use alternative filling stations. This is not an ideal business model for them and this is constantly highlighted

by Council to both SEQWater and UU. Check the UU website www.urbanutilities.com. au for further information and to register for regular updates. Other areas are also facing these challenges as the supply dam levels continue to fall. I have been asked what Council is able to do to address this ongoing situation and to monitor the continued urban development in Canungra. Council continues to advocate with SEQWater, Urban Utilities and the Queensland Government, as well as in the Growth Management Plan currently in progress as a condition of adoption of the Scenic Rim Planning Scheme. In 2006, Council refused a local development application on the grounds of uncertain

future water supply only to have the Planning and Environment Court return an approval to this in 2011. I know that our residents have an exceptional record of adhering to water restrictions when required, although our usage has crept up since September with the hot weather - from 130 litres per person per day to 165 litres. Following the 2019 fires, the usage was down to 75 litres so we know we can do it!

Wildlife Issue On Beaudesert Nerang Road This matter is also progressing with officers from DTMR communicating with Bren, Tara, Gary and myself as well as Council’s Environmental and Infrastucture

officers. I made contact with the Director General of the Department of Transport and Main Roads at the recent Local Government Association Queensland conference and he along with the Regional Director (South Coast) DTMR have taken a keen interest in the matter.

Bridge Replacement Council has again been successful in the recent Australian Government Bridges Renewal Program Round Five with matching funding for

four new bridges, one being Flying Fox bridge. This aged, load-limited timber bridge will be replaced with a two-lane concrete bridge.

Festive Season Wishes What a year we have all experienced! Once again the Canungra community has united as together we navigated another challenge in our lives. I encourage you all to think local when doing your Christmas shopping and have a restful and happy festive season with your family and friends.

BONE DENSITY How Can We Improve Our Bone Density? When we were growing up we were told to drink plenty of milk to make our bones strong. From a nutritional point of view it is very important to imbibe plenty of protein together with essential vitamins and minerals but it doesn’t have to be through dairy products. Aside from nutrition, have you ever considered how important exercise is to maintain the health of your bones? Our bones are made up of cells which are forever changing, balancing between building bone and breaking it down. As we age, unfortunately, we tend to get a bit more break down and this can lead to Osteopenia and then onto Osteoporosis. But the good news is that

exercise can change that. When bones undergo stress from exercising, a cellular cascade occurs resulting in a biochemical response whereby more bone tissue is made and stored.

What Exercises Do I Need to Do? Weight-Bearing Exercises For people over the age of 50 years, exercises which require you to be weight-bearing and for a period of approximately 20 minutes per day, significantly maintain good bone density around your legs, hip joints, pelvis and lower back. Activities like brisk walking, jogging, playing tennis, dancing, and group exercise sessions are all good. To ramp up your bone density you can try adding squats, resisted arm weights, deadlifts or leg presses as they are all

put lots of good stresses through your bones, making them stronger. High Impact, High Load Exercises For younger people wanting to maintain good bone health, high impact exercise and rapid direction changing exercises have shown to improve bone density. Activities like jumping, hopping, and skipping have shown improvements in density throughout the whole body. Therefore sports like tennis, basketball, netball, AFL and soccer are all great for this. As a young adult, once optimal bone health is reached, it is then a matter of keeping up a certain level of activity in your daily life to maintain this bone density. As we don’t tend to jump or skip around so much when we are adults we might need to add some

Maintaining the health of your bones is important. specific jumping type exercises into our days! In addition to bone health, the weight-bearing and high impact exercises are excellent for gross muscle strength, muscle mass development, balance and coordination, not to mention mental health.

Alison Ford specialises in designing exercise programs to help people to maximise their bone health and she developed a kit, Actively Ageing (two x books and a DVD of exercises) which she has in her Clinic in Canungra.

The Canungra Times – December 2020

These are my own personal views. I do not purport to speak on behalf of Council.

Council Meetings Recently, we resolved that from 2021 we would move Council Ordinary meetings from a Monday to a Tuesday. I was one of the Councillors that requested this move, as it would give Councillors more time to read through the agenda which can total in the hundreds of pages. Currently the meeting agenda is released on a Wednesday afternoon and we hold the meeting on the Monday, that only gives Councillors a day

to read the agenda and get any questions that we wish to be clarified to Council Officers so they can get an answer by Friday afternoon, ready for the Monday meeting. I regularly send a list of questions to the General Managers that I intend to ask at the meeting to ensure that they are prepared with answers. What I don’t want is to ask a question and for the officer to not have the answer as that does not help anyone. With the move to a Tuesday meeting, this gives Councillors extra time to read through the Agenda and direct any questions that need to be answered or clarified at the meeting to Council Officers. Unfortunately, this means that print media

may not make their deadlines, but I believe the effective running of Council needs to come first. We have not stopped their ability to print the stories coming from the meeting as they can still post on social media immediately and still print in their next edition.

State and Federal Grants I wish to congratulate the Council on their efforts in 2020 of securing a multitude State and Federal grants totalling in the millions of dollars.

These grants assist Council in providing much needed asset management (roads and bridges) as well as programs for the social environment, which we could not afford with such a small rate base. Some residents may not know that we have a legacy of over 100 bridges that need replacement (still over 50 wooden bridges to be replaced) or repair. The replacement of these bridges does not come cheap and the assistance of Federal co-fund-

ing at fifty per cent is much needed and appreciated.

Roadworks It is great to see Beaudesert Beenleigh Road getting some long overdue and much needed attention from Main Roads. Road works are being conducted around Tamborine Village as well as just outside Beaudesert. Although it’s an inconvenience now, the longterm benefits are better and safer road conditions.

Canungra’s History Mary Hart By Joyce Libke

Mary Eileen Hart (08/09/1912 to 09/06/2011) lived in Canungra most of her life. She was a descendant of the pioneering Mahony family and acted as historian for family and local history. Among the treasures she kept are the exam papers from 1928 when she was the only girl in the district to pass the Scholarship exam. Although this entitled her to attend Secondary school she was needed on the farm to help her parents run the dairy. This exam would have been held at the end of Year 8, three days to cover two to three hours on each subject with many separate questions each paper. I have selected one question from each subject that Mary appears to have answered: ENGLISH - Write one page on one of the following 1. A rescue at sea 2. The growth of a township 3. A conversation between a fountain pen and an ordinary pen 4. An agricultural show HISTORY - Arrange the following in the order in which they occurred and write a short paragraph on one of them 1. The French Revolution 2. The Destruction of the Spanish Armada 3. The Abolition of Slavery 4. The Passing of the Corn Laws 5. Union of the Kingdoms of England and Scotland.

Mary Hart ARITHMATIC - How long would it take any sum of money to double itself at 7 ½ percent per annum simple interest. GEOGRAPHY - Rapidly draw a map of Queensland as large as a sheet of foolscap will allow. Print on your map the names ‘sugar’ ‘wool’ ‘coal’ and ‘wheat’ to show the different parts of the State where the production of these things is the chief industry of the people. MISCELLANEOUS (covered music, drawing, articles from the prescribed reading book, science, sewing, medical) - Write a short description of the liver under the following headings:- Position, shape, weight, functions, attachments to the diaphragm, vessels entering and leaving it, use of hepatic vein.

With over four million kilometres and six years of development testing invested into the all new D-MAX, Isuzu’s seventh-generation ute is the most advanced, refined and sophisticated vehicle ever produced by the famed Japanese auto maker. Released in September 2020 and available from Isuzu ute Australia Dealers, the all-new D-MAX is available across three cabin types; single cab, space cab and crew cab, with four model variants; SX, LS-M, LS-U and the range-topping, X-TERRAIN. The new-flagship, D-MAX X-TERRAIN comes with an array of additional inclusions such as remote engine start, smart entry and start, walk away door lock, and a lavish piano black and leather-accented interior. Equipped with a de-

The exterior design follows similar modern cues, including front and rear underbody spoilers, roof rails, fender flares, an aero sports bar, roller tonneau cover and tub liner. Fuelled by local Australian feedback, Isuzu engineers have evolved the proven 4JJ1 platform to now produce 140kW at 3,600rpm and 450Nm at 1,600rpm through to 2,600rpm, with the new 4JJ3-TCX sporting a 10kW and 20Nm hike over the preceding engine. CANUNGRA RSL SUB-BRANCH By Col Lee, Canungra RSL Sub Branch

Remembrance Day 2020 With beautiful weather and a nice crowd in attendance, this years’ service was well received. Sub-Branch member, Bruce William’s introduction gave an impressive coverage of the history of Armistice Day; mentioning many historical facts that have changed over the years. An example of this is the two minute silence that has become one minute silence, and the reason why the word Armistice was change to Remembrance. School Captains, Amy and Cooper, gave the reading with the poem, ‘A Soldier Died Alone’. It was the same poem they were to deliver last ANZAC Day but had to be cancelled due to COVID-19. The theme for this year’s keynote address was the Australian Army Nursing Service, now the Royal Australian Army Nurs-

NATURE’S GEMS

Diamond Dove (Geopelia cuneata)

By Melissa Whitby

Pigeons and doves are a common sight throughout Australia. I grew up looking at Brown Cuckoo-Doves and Bar-shouldered Doves. Many species around Canungra are associated with rainforest areas. Some pigeon and dove species can only be found in drier parts of Australia. One such species is the Diamond Dove. This dove species is easily recognised by its small size, red eye ring and pale spots on the wings. Similar species to the Diamond Dove are Peaceful Doves. The main difference being that the Peaceful Dove has a pale eye-ring. As mentioned, Diamond Doves inhabit drier areas of all the Australia states and territories except Tasmania. This is not a species that will generally be seen around Canungra and the closest location I have seen them to the coast in South-east

Queensland is Gatton. The call of the Diamond Dove is very distinctive. A good way to find this species is to wait around waterholes and listen for their calls. These birds will consistently come to

water, which makes them easy to locate in dry areas where water is scarce. I had excellent views of Diamond Doves at a dam at Opalton, 100 kilometres south of Winton. The birds were seen in pairs and were quiet enough for me to get some very good photographs. Throughout their range, Diamond Dove are relatively common but can be transient. For example, Diamond Doves are not usually seen around Gatton all-year round and rainfall plays a huge factor on when the birds will breed and what parts of their range they will frequent. Diamond Doves are a bird species that I have been observing for many years and I still think of them as one of Australia’s more beautiful dove spe-

cies. They are usually not a hard bird to observe in the right habitat. Often, the birds will feed on the ground, so it is worth checking if you flush a small dove or pigeon to check to see whether it is a Peaceful Dove or a Diamond Dove. For anyone travelling and staying at caravan parks out west that are bird friendly, it is worth doing a walk around as you might just see these little beauties taking advantage of easy access to water and feeding opportunities! I would like to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. 2020 has been a year that has tested us all and my heart goes out to everyone that has been affected by the current pandemic. Native Tamarind

(Diploglottis australis)

By Susan Cully This Native Tamarind is a well-known rainforest tree found on each of our plateaus, Beechmont, Lamington, Tamborine and Springbrook. In the garden it can be planted in a protected site and will ultimately grow to 35 meters with a trunk diameter of 75 cm. It produces beautiful fresh foliage with a moderate application of fertilizer and frequent watering. Despite its place amongst the forest giants, it also makes a beautiful tub plant, remaining at a manageable size for a long time. Native Tamarind is in the same family as the rambutans, lychees and longans of Asia. It bears a bright orange fruit that is juicy and pleasant. Birds and fruit bats eat great quantities and in spring the ground around the trees is littered with chewed seeds. These discarded seeds have been given a ‘prep’ by the birds and generally germinate quite readily when sown in a nursery. This tree feeds many native birds: brown cuckoo dove, crimson rosella, Australasian figbird, green catbird, regent bowerbird, Australian brush-turkey, rose-

PETS OF THE MONTH Double the Love - Syd and Sam Introducing Syd and Sam! This best friend duo do everything together - including getting adopted! Syd and Sam are definitely two peas in a pod with their matching sleek black coats and mutual love of fish for dinner. However, Sam is the playful one of the two he loves toys and playing and Syd is more of a sit back and watch kind of guy, but once he’s feeling confident in his surroundings, the staff at the AWL are sure he’ll

be smooching up by your side in no time! It would be best for these two to be your only pets, so if you’ve got space in your heart and home for two guys like Syd and Sam, why not consider adding these best friends to your family! Syd and Sam are available for adoption from foster, so if you would like to organise a meet and greet please call the friendly team at the AWL on 5509 9000.

crowned fruit-dove, topknot pigeon and wompoo fruit-dove. The leaves are interesting, they are huge, beautiful and pinnate. This means that what is commonly regarded as a single big leaf is actually a leaflet. Six to 12 leaflets make a leaf. Pictured above are two young, rusty velvet leaves and one large, single leaf. This is a critical element of botanic identification.

One asks the question: Does this plant have a simple leaf or a compound/pinnate leaf? The fruit matures in a brown and hairy capsule. The yellow to orange aril covers a brown seed. The aril is juicy and reported to be tasty. Known as part of indigenous diet it is also used for jams and chutneys and tangy drinks.

Another year almost over and although it has been very different, many things have remained the same. For example, our families are still our family and God is still our God. He has not changed, even if we have. As a teacher I have just farewelled my year 12 students, and the following are words I wrote to encourage them in their future endeavours. I believe we could all take some wisdom from these words: Always include love, happiness, respect, caring for others and caring for the environment. Mix all this together and your life will turn out well. Remember to always do your best in whatever you choose to do. Always be honest and sincere. Work with others as a valuable team member. Remember a chain is only as strong as its weakest link and so too, a team is only as good as its weakest member. Enjoy your life, be happy. Money is not everything. Be humble and honest. Share with others when you see someone in need. These words could apply to our family, our work, our church or any part of our life, regardless of what you do or who you are. St Luke’s will be celebrating Christmas Day with a service at the usual time of 8am and you are all welcome to attend. I invite you to come along to our Christmas Carol evening on the 23rd December (as mentioned in last month’s Canungra Times.) The Carols will commence at 6pm and along with our famous Stewart Morris, we will also have Wendy and Liam to lead the singing. All have amazing voices and it will be a great night. The Little Lukies children will present a special item and there will be free water, lolly bags and a raffle drawn on the night. As this year ends, I sincerely thank Keer for this newspaper which helps us all be a community together. We are very grateful to the Bendigo Bank for their community support and especially for assisting St Luke’s to present the Carols evening.

Moriarty Park and Canungra Owls Soccer News With Bren Dalby

Moriarty Park After my jubilation of achieving funds for a mower, it seems we can’t get the one we want till January so out with the wee mowers again or we may have to employ someone for a couple of mows. Ah well, at least there is light at the end of the tunnel! Our markets on the second Sunday of the month are back from 8am-1pm. Enquiries to Emma Walker on 0457 096 397. I had a spot of bother at the last markets where it seems I was unreasonable in my request for the queueing traffic to keep a little to the left and allow access for other park users to the carpark. I was astonished and disappointed. I was rather hoping one of our regular pool users whom

I believe is a force to be reckoned with had come along….and then just sat back and watched the show! I hope everyone will have realised my request was not unreasonable and actually just effecting courtesy to other people. We will put it down to a “too early on a Sunday morning” thing. Markets seemed to be buzzing though so all’s well that ends well.

Canungra Owls Soccer Our presentation went very well and all seemed very happy with their trophies. Our new Slushie machine proved a winner too! Look out for news of sign on early next year, and lets have a mammoth year in 2021. Our Club Person of the Year award this year went to Morgan Ritter who has

helped out in so many ways this year , from whippersnipping through pub raffles to coaching and playing; well deserved Morgan and thank you for all you have done for the club. Social soccer is now up and running on a Monday night – contact Cameron on 0418 295 284.

Christmas We have secured a Food Truck /Classic Cars afternoon / evening on 19th December, from 4pm until 9pm at Moriarty Park again this year to be able to better adhere to our social distancing requirements. All will have to follow COVID rules of course and sign in but I think we are all getting used to that now and it is easy enough to do. We will have flyers coming out soon as

Santa will be at Moriarty Park on 19th December. we have only just gotten this organised in the last day or two. I have made sure, however, that Santa Claus is available and will be arriving late afternoon. Other activities and entertainment will be available for all. Please come along and lets see this year out with a great community event!

Meeting This month’s Moriarty Park meeting will be on 14th December at 6.45pm, should anyone wish to join us. If there are any entertainers who would like to be a part of our Xmas event please contact Bren on 0414 435 919 or bren. dalby@bigpond.com.

Pink Cricket Gets Hot!

Canungra’s Pink Cricket raised almost $500 for the McGrath Foundation. Photo: Kerri Cryer.

Many of Canungra’s ‘Pink’ events were unable to be held this year, but the Pink Cricket went ahead on a searingly hot day. The match, Canungra versus Hinterland, attracted players from Canungra, Tamborine Mountain and Mudgeeraba, including State Member for Scenic Rim, Jon Krause. Canungra won the match with 1/265, with Luke Heineken the highest scoring batsman on 76. Jon Krause was the highest scoring batsman for Hinterland with 66 and Hinterland finishing with a score of 2/202. Organiser Stu Comley said almost $500 was raised on the day, which will be donated to the McGrath Foundation.
