Day Zero - Canungra’s Water Crisis On Monday, 25th November 2019 the Canungra Water Treatment Plant, which in January was hailed by Seqwater as ‘securing Canungra’s water future for the next 30 years’, was shut down when Canungra Creek stopped flowing, impacting raw water quality. Water is currently being tankered into the Appel Street reservoir from Beaudesert to meet the demands of the township. Urban Utilities spokesperson Michelle Cull said with the water treatment plant offline, Urban Utilities had to close its tanker filling station in Canungra until further notice. “While Seqwater’s tankering is maintaining water supply for the town, there is not enough to service the demand at the Canungra tanker filling station,” she said. Although Canungra is part of the South East Queensland water grid, it is not physically connected to the grid and the town’s water is sourced from Canungra Creek. Water carriers are travelling to Beaudesert and Nerang for water supplies, pushing the cost of water deliveries up significantly. On 27th November, following pressure from members of the public and Member for Scenic Rim Jon Krause, Urban Utilities set up a temporary filling station on Coburg Road, Canungra, to provide some relief for those not on town water. “While I acknowledge QUU’s priority is those on town water, the practical reality is many people from places like Illinbah, Sarabah, Flying Fox and a number of other places rely on that standpipe – it has been available for quite a long time for them to use,” said Jon.

“That is why Seqwater, as the body responsible for producing the water, must do everything possible to keep up that supply.” “It is quite frankly not good enough that after battling fires for the past months residents are now being asked to go to Beaudesert to access drinking water,” said Jon. Seqwater and Urban Utilities were contacted on 6th November regarding low water levels in Canungra Creek. The response from Seqwater was that creek flows had decreased since September due to the ongoing dry conditions, however restrictions were not yet required. In the week prior to the Treatment Plant closure, an average of 315 kilolitres per day was being delivered through the Canungra tanker filling station. The average demand during the first week of October was 130 kilolitres per day. The Coomera River, which services some rural properties in Illinbah, stopped flowing a week prior to the closure.

Jon Krause said the sudden closure of the treatment plant and tanker filling station was not good enough. “It was only a week or two before the closure, that Urban Utilities and Seqwater started very “gentle” awareness campaigns to conserve water, and now the plant doesn’t have enough water,” said Jon. “It didn’t all just evaporate in a week. I think somebody in these entities has taken their eye off the ball in a big way, and they now need to fix the situation by getting enough water to Canungra for both town and non-town users of Urban Utilities water.” Mayor Greg Christensen said he was advised by Arran Hassell, Commandant of the Land Warfare Centre at Canungra, that residents on the Barracks will be on the same water restrictions as Canungra township. Mandatory water restrictions were brought in on Saturday 30th November. The Treatment Plant will remain closed until significant rainfall has been received.

Changes Proposed for Canungra’s Main Street The Department of Transport and Main Roads (DTMR) is asking for community feedback on proposed pedestrian safety improvements on Beaudesert-Nerang Road (Christie Street) in Canungra. The improvements include zebra crossings and street lighting as well as town entry statements designed to slow traffic entering the town. Cr Virginia West, State Member for Scenic Rim Jon Krause and Canungra Chamber of Commerce have been lobbying for changes to the existing traffic arrangements for several years. Cr Virginia West said she welcomes a number of the proposed safety measures but has concerns regarding the loss of six parking spaces and the possible traffic congestion near the intersection of Kidston and Christie Streets. “I encourage residents to share their views with DTMR and myself during the submission period which ends on 6th December,” she said. State Member for Scenic Rim, Jon Krause said the proposal is, overall, a positive step. “Main Roads’ announcement, earlier this year, that it would look at a town entry treatment for Canungra was a good first step,” he said.
“The town entry treatment, basically encouraging motorists to slow down and look out, is being added to by Main Roads’ proposal for two raised pedestrian crossings.” “These raised crossings – much like speed humps, near the Ambulance Station and D J Smith Memorial Park, will no doubt slow passing traffic and improve overall safety. “On the whole, I have received positive feedback about these proposals, especially from the Canungra State School community.” The Canungra Chamber of Commerce said the loss of car parking spaces will place further pressure on businesses and expressed concerned about the effect on traffic flow through Christie Street. Long term Canungra residents, Bev Nichols and Vicki Rayner expressed concern that a bypass no longer appears to be under consideration. “The growth in the nearby Yarrabilba community with high density housing has added to the main road congestion through Canungra,” said Bev, “I believe that is the way many of those residents would travel to and from the Gold Coast on a regular basis.”

“There are so many heavy vehicles that travel straight through town each day, and also so much construction happening, I would be concerned a fully laden truck, coming from either way, may not be able to stop in time, if a pedestrian stepped out on a zebra crossing,” said Vicki. “I believe that there should be a heavy vehicle bypass solution before the issue of the safe passage of pedestrians can be solved. By getting these heavy vehicles off the main street, only then will there be a safer option for pedestrians,” she said. Vicki is also concerned about the impact of a pedestrian crossing near the intersection of Christie and Kidston Streets. “To put a raised zebra crossing will only add to the congestion on the intersection, with vehicles pulled up to a stop for pedestrians and queued across the intersection , leaving vehicles with absolutely no where to go!” she said. Feedback on the proposed changes should be sent no later than 6th December to DTMR by emailing southcoast@tmr.qld.gov.au. Work on the proposed changes has been programmed to commence in the first half of 2020.

Since September, Canungra and Beechmont have battled fires, droughts and water shortages, there have been homes lost, families displaced, hardship and tears. But there have also been ordinary people doing extraordinary things. These are a few of the people who went above and beyond - showing that extraordinary circumstances really do bring out the best in some people. There are bound to be people who have not been mentioned here - please email news@canungratimes.com.au with their details for inclusion in future editions. Canungra Hardware: Rebecca and David Torrens helped out local farmers and horse owners by collecting donations for livestock and wildlife feed after the bushfires. Assisted by Lauren Phillips, they delivered straight to the farmer’s gates immediately after the fires to ensure the animals didn’t go hungry. Kelly Casey: Kelly has been busy with livestock feed as well, and has been instrumental in sourcing feed - especially hay - which is becoming more and more difficult to find. Canungra Op Shop: All the team at Canungra Op Shop, who are primarily volunteers, were hard at work sorting donations during the fires and helping out people who had been evacuated or needed assistance. Special mention to Caroline Andrew, who arranged with the Op Shop committee for donations to be taken and distributed to people who need them immediately. The Canungra Op Shop has helped with everything from clothing needs to water and a bit of moral support for people as well. Ree Lister: Ree wanted to organise a Ute Muster style fundraiser before the bushfires were even over! With many Canungra Show Society people unable to assist (fires threatening their properties), she organised the fundraiser which has helped pay for livestock feed. GIVIT: GIVIT got off to a shaky start but has since partnered with the Canungra Op Shop and QCWA Beechmountain to assist with all sorts of requests - including water pumps and new furniture for people who lost homes.

Canungra Rural Fire Brigade
Canungra and Beechmont Rural Fire Brigade: These guys are our heroes. Every one of them is a volunteer. They spent weeks, unpaid, fighting fires and they stay on the fire ground until the job is done. There are untold numbers of people who owe these men and women their homes, and their lives. Many of them are still fighting fires in the Western part of the region. Thank you will never be enough. Dreamworld: This year, Halloween came to the farm! When Dreamworld finished its Halloween celebrations, they offered the decorations to local farmers - 2000 pumpkins and three truck loads of much needed barley hay for cattle. This was all delivered by Dreamworld - and very much appreciated by the hungry cattle.

Mark Stollznow from Canungra Mowers: After the fires, I (Keer) saw post on a community page asking for a lawn mower for family who lost their home in the fires on Beechmont. On Friday, I gave Mark a call and he said he had a second hand mower the family could have. When I checked in with him he said decided to give them a brand new mower so they had something reliable with warranty. I have to admit I almost started crying.

Owen Slingsby: Owen, age 6, lives on Beechmont and was evacuated during the fires. Owen wrote the song ‘When Fires Start’, which is available on YouTube. Owen said he just made up the words one day. His mother, Catherine, helped with the music and his father, Paul helped with the video clip. The lyrics are: “When fires start - all the animals go away/ But after the fires, all the animals come back/ and they all struggle to find water and they struggle to find food too”. Owens says many of the

Jamie Bramich: Cheryl and Paul Kingsman’s son, Scott, has Dushenne Muscular Dystrophy. Jamie met the family when he quoted on building a pool for Scott. Jamie contacted Hayward Australia Pool Products about a heater for the pool and Tony Sharp of Hayward gave a massive 70% discount off the heater. Jamie also threw in an upgraded pool chlorinator and he and his plumber, Ray installed it for free. Cheryl said when Jamie told her what he was going to do for them, they were all crying - including Jamie. Sarabah Road Residents: Most of these residents spent two weeks fighting fires on their own and each others’ properties. This is a community that supports each other through flooding and bushfires. There are stories of neighbours grabbing tree branches to beat the fire back, finding injured koalas and using their earthmoving equipment to make fire breaks. Special mention to the Luscombe family who always seem to be going above and beyond to help their neighbours out. QCWA Beechmountain and the ‘Sons of Beechmont’: The ‘Ash Army’ went to Timbarra Drive to cleanup of blocks where homes were lost and out buildings and yards damaged. They arranged a skip bin (funded by donations) and the group of 11 locals and six Beechmont men who now live on the coast were able to assist five families.

In early November, the Canungra & District Community Bank Branch teamed up with Aquis to be a proud sponsor of Beaudesert’s annual Derby Day races. Whilst the day’s main focus was the horse racing, this year six local charities (State Emergency Service, Rural Fire Service, Rapid Relief Team, Country Women’s Association, Everyman’s and LifeFlight) who assisted during the recent bushfires in Canungra were the recipients of all funds raised. Those who attended all agree it was a great way for the community to let their hair down a little bit, but it was also a great opportunity to reflect on what a great community we live in. In addition to a financial contribution from our branch, the charities received funds raised on the day via donations, raffles and Fashions on the Field. We’d like to take this opportunity to thank everyone involved in making the day a great success, especially to those businesses who donated prizes: Beaudesert RSL, Gold Coast Turf Club, IAG Insurance, My Country Escape, The Shoe Vault, Heavenly Zen Massage Clinic Beaudesert, Dolly Boutique and Beauty, Dominos Pizza Beaudesert, Zupps Beaudesert, The Overflow Estate 1895 and LifeFlight. From My Window

Too Many Stories to Tell... Over the past few months there have been some heart wrenching stories of loss, survival and kindness. I had intended to include some of these in this edition of The Canungra Times. Unfortunately, I found myself caught up in some other matters and here I am, the night I go to print, unprepared. Fortunately, the Canungra Historical Society is looking at undertaking a book to document the stories arising from the fires on Canungra and Beechmont. I’d like to invite anyone who has a story to tell or photographs to share to contact me over the next few months as we begin to collect those stories. Some people might want to write the story themselves, and others will feel more comfortable telling their story to someone who will write it for them. Still others will not be ready yet, the more affected you were by those fires, the longer it might take to tell your story - or of course you might choose not to have that made public. Everyone deals with things in different ways. This project will take about six to twelve months to collate material and get it ready. We are in the process of working through some of the practicalities at the moment. It has certainly been an exhausting year. I’ve seen the best and worst of people this year. Bring on 2020. Wishing you all a Merry Christmas and a Safe and Happy New Year.

Donna Purtill is excited to announce she is now the sole owner of OWL Wholefoods. Donna became a part-owner of OWL Wholefoods in November 2018. She has extended the cafe menu, kept the organic coffee and added to the range of healthy, organic grocery lines in stock which feeds her passion for nutrition and health. You Just Can’t Beat Going to Your Local! By The Full-Bodied Foodie There’s something about going to your local that just feels good. Going to the bar to be served by someone you’ve known since they were in primary school (and you’re friends with their mum), and running into people you’ve been meaning to catch up with for ages, is all part of the experience. Whether you are local or not, Canungra Hotel offers the great country hospitality you expect from Canungra - as well as meals to satisfy all appetites. We had a ‘mum’s night out’ a small gathering mainly of Class of 2019 mums - and let’s face it, there was a lot to celebrate - we survived the high school years! With a table of 10 booked, in what I still call the new area (yes I remember it before the booths went), it was a good gathering on a reasonably busy night. The meals came out quickly for such a busy night. Orders ranged from pizzas to steak and specials from the board. The Chilli Salmon from the specials board was amazing - salmon cooked to perfection and more than enough food. Even though they don’t promise that pizzas will come out with main meals, the couple of people who
ordered pizza got them in good time - and had enough to take home to partners! The menu consists of a range of pizzas, steak, pasta and the largest selection of Chicken Parmigiana I’ve seen (highly recommend the ‘Frenchy’) as well as snacks such as chips and gravy or sweet potato fries. I love the atmosphere of the Canungra Hotel and for a fun, relaxed night out in town you really can’t go past it.
Canungra Hotel is open seven days a week for lunch and dinner. There is live music in the public bar most Fridays nights and in the restaurant most Sunday afternoons. Tamborine Mountain College Awards and Graduation Ceremony 2019
HOTA on the Gold Coast held the prestigious Awards Day for Tamborine Mountain College (TMC) where the entire College from Pre-Prep to Yr 12, with family and friends, enjoyed the celebration of another successful year. Invited guests, Jon Krause MP, Vanessa Bull and David Kirkpatrick from Lions, Delma McCrea, Chamber of Commerce, Kevin Lynch, Principal of Hills and Ms Brook Andrea SCU were in attendance. With the addition of the Early Learning Centre this year, TMC has a complete campus with one culture. TMC playgroup commenced this term every Monday at the Centre, open to the whole community. Awards Day acknowledges achievements at every year level and celebrates the graduation of Yr 12, Yr 6 and for the first time Pre-Prep (how cute!). This year marked the beginning of a beautiful relationship with a “Sister School” in France. The Principal, Mrs June Melbourne, went to Paris mid-year and travelled one hour by train to Tours where Lycee Sainte Ursule is located. What a wonderful opportunity for both schools!

A Challenging Few Months By Kylie Todhunter, Principal It has been a challenging few months for our school and our community and the greatest news is that everyone is safe. The thoughts and prayers of all the staff have been with our school families. I have been flooded with messages of concern and offers of help from my colleagues across the region and the state. People are thinking of our school and our community and supporting us. I have been proud of the manner in which our students have held themselves during this period. The Student Council held a bake sale at the recent Family Fun Day and raised $286 for the Rural Fire Brigade. They are currently running a colouring competition to raise additional and the student council is seeking donations of prizes and more entries. Our community has demonstrated great strength, care and compassion and I am proud to be a part it.

The students who participated had a great year both on and off the field, at both junior and senior levels. Being a remote country school with only a touch over 350 enrolments, the boys and girls who participated in the program can hold their heads extremely high with the amount of competitiveness and sportsmanship they showed throughout the year. The students show commitment to the program by training twice a week during their playtimes, which goes a long way in improving their competitiveness. With limited opportunities relating to our geographic positioning, Canungra sometimes has to travel to the Gold Coast City to compete in carnivals throughout the year. At these carnivals our school comes up against teams from Gold Coast based schools,

School Happenings some of whom have 800 plus enrolments to choose from and play rugby league on a weekly basis. So for our boys and girls to be competitive against these types of schools is a credit to them and their eagerness to succeed. Canungra participated in five big NRL carnivals throughout the year and both the junior and senior teams at one point tasted success. Juniors - at the annual two day Kingfisher Cup, and the Seniors - the annual carnival against our local schools. Both teams went through each of their carnivals undefeated and held their respective trophies high with pride at the end of the day. A special mention needs to be given to two juniors, Cooper MacKenzie and Will Hamblin who were given awards by the NRL upon completion of the Kingfisher Cup for their on-field performances and sportsmanship shown. With these two players and some of their current teammates moving to the senior team next year, things are looking good for Canungra State School in the coming years.

The GT has a 1.0L Turbo GDI engine paired with a 7-speed DCT (Dual Clutch Transmission). Yes, it is only a 1.0-litre however it has 88kW and 172Nm of torque. This in-line 3-cylinder blows away the 1.4-litre in the other Rio line-up. The GT also has better fuel economy with a combined L/100km of just 5.4. This makes it more powerful and better on fuel which is helping push it towards the hot hatch mark. The exterior of the Rio GT has been improved with the addition of the GT-Line Package (Body Kit, Radiator Grille, rear diffuser, twin exhaust). There is dark chrome, black gloss, an exclusive GT-Line Spoiler and other chrome accents that set the GT apart from standard Rioâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s. Inside there are also a number of features that separate the GT-Line from the base Rio and also put it in a sportier category. While the power let it down a little, Kia really nailed the handling. The little GT would go where I pointed it and would take the hard and late turn ins that I subjected it to. The ride is firm and controlled and good for fun and as a daily driver. Fascia?
We’ve all heard of muscles, ligaments, and tendons, but what is fascia? Fascia is connective tissue, which is widespread throughout your entire body. It’s made primarily of collagen and is wrapped around every muscle, bone, nerve, and organ. Its role is to support muscles to shape and stabilise the body by connecting otherwise separate muscles and organs and to compartmentalise muscle groups from organs and other elements of the body. Another role fascia plays is in force distribution and enables force coupling. Basically, certain muscles are connected via fascia to other muscles, and when contracted together, the fascia acts as a conductor of force allowing the body to coordinate movement. An important function of muscle fasciae is to reduce friction of muscular force. In doing so, fasciae provide a supportive and movable wrapping for nerves and blood vessels as they pass through and between muscles. Fascia is rigid, strong and cannot be stretched. It can, however, become ‘sticky’ and adhere to surrounding tissues, thereby limiting mobility. Some are innervated by sensory nerve endings, hence pain is felt where ‘stickiness’ occurs. The most common example of fascial pain is the Iliotibial Band, or ITB, which runs down the outside of your thigh. Another common example of fascial ‘stickiness’ is in the shin presenting as shin splints. If you are suffering from pain in fascial regions of your body, then myofascial release techniques by a Physiotherapist will improve the mobility of the fascia, which will give pain relief and improve function. Laser Therapy will also help to reduce the adhesions. You will then be taught self-management techniques to maintain this release of tension.

Christmas in the Bush Queensland All Trades recently held their Christmas party at Canungra Valley Getaway, in Sarabah Road, Canungra. The group had a great time playing in the creek, exploring the countryside and of course having a great self-catered Christmas lunch in the covered barbecue area by the Creek. Canungra Valley Getaway owner Debbie Geldard said despite the dry conditions Canungra is still a great place for a weekend away, especially for people from Brisbane and the Gold Coast. “They all had a great time,” said Debbie, “And we loved having them here.”

Sourced By Joyce Libke, Canungra & District Historical Society Harry McVey, who lived in Biddaddaba in the early 1900s, would have crossed the bridge over the Albert River at Mundoolun all his life. A typical low level wooden bridge, in the years prior to the building of the present high level bridge, it had over 50 road signs on its approaches to ensure the safety of drivers and passengers. Beaudesert Needs to Connect to Water Grid
LNP Leader Deb Frecklington has joined Scenic Rim MP Jon Krause to call on the Queensland State Government to secure Beaudesert’s water supply by bringing forward connection to the SEQ water grid. “Drought and water security is Queensland’s number one issue,” Ms Frecklington said, “Secure water supplies means secure jobs.” “Water is vital for Beaudesert, Rathdowney and Kooralbyn, and the commercial and irrigation allocations of dozens of local businesses depend on the Logan River and Maroon Dam.” “With the prolonged drought, all these businesses face drastic cuts to water allocations from Maroon Dam, causing huge losses in agricultural production and loss of local jobs.” “Labor should bring forward plans to build the Southwest pipeline and ensure that the funding allocation for the pipeline is released publicly and budgeted for in the 2020-21 budget.” LNP Member for Scenic Rim Jon Krause said SEQWater already has work underway to connect Beaudesert to the water grid in 2021 through the Southwest pipeline.” “This work needs to be fast tracked and Labor need to release costings and budget for it,” Mr Krause said. “Canungra is now having water trucked into its reservoir from Beaudesert owing to drought and the shutdown of its water treatment plant.” “If the drought continues in the longer term, Kooralbyn and Rathdowney will also face town water shortages. “To ensure secure water supply for Beaudesert, and the broader region such as Kooralbyn, Rathdowney and Canungra, and continuing allocations for farmers and other businesses from the Logan River and Maroon Dam, this pipeline needs to be a priority.” Jon said if there is less town water demand from Beaudesert / other town water (high priority) allocations, there will be more water left in Maroon Dam to maintain irrigation and commercial allocations for longer.

Council Comment By Cr Virginia West, Scenic Rim Regional Council
DTMR Pedestrian Safety Proposal
The Department of Transport and Main Roads has advised the community of a $4.9 million dollar safety improvement project on Beaudesert-Nerang Road, including pedestrian safety measures on Christie Street, Canungra. Work proposed on Christie Street includes: • town entry signage at both ends of the township • raising of the pedestrian refuge outside Canungra State School to a zebra crossing • a new zebra crossing between D J Smith Park and businesses on the opposite side of the road, and • additional street lighting at each refuge to improve visibility of pedestrians at night. Further works include a new surface treatment on the BeaudesertNerang Road descent into Canungra township to improve skid resistance, the installation of audio-tactile line marking and other safety improvements. I encourage all residents to take a look at these plans, which are at Canungra Library, and to provide feedback to DTMR as requested. While I support this project aimed at safer pedestrian movement on Christie Street, I do have concerns regarding the loss of six parking spaces and the possible congestion in the Kidston Street/ Christie Street section.
Water Challenges For Our Community
The very concerning and rapid drop in water levels in the Canungra Creek over recent weeks has been a worrying situation for all residents, both rural and urban and has been changing on a daily basis. Urban Utilities, the water retailer, has applied High Level Water Restrictions now to all users both in the residential and commercial area, with a letterbox drop conducted and advise on water conservation methods on the website urbanutilities.com.au/canungra. SEQWater have temporarily closed the standpipe at the Treatment Station on Lamington National Park Road and Urban Utilities are now providing an alternative filling station beside the off leash dog park on Coburg Road. Residents are able to fill a container up to 1000 litres. Our community are historically very diligent water users and I encourage all of us to continue to watch everybody drop and to share our water saving tips. It is amazing how much water can be harvested by having a bucket in the shower, even with a very quick shower
and rinsing dishes in a bowl in the kitchen sink rather than under a running tap.

This event is aimed at being a community thank you to our Canungra Rural Fire Brigade members, for their tireless efforts during the September fires, and a whole-ofcommunity Christmas celebration.

Remembrance Day 2019, Canungra.
A smokey day with bush fires in the Scenic Rim greeted those who gathered for this year’s Remembrance Day Service. Surprisingly, there was a nice sized crowd in attendance considering that the Monday was not a public holiday. The service commenced with the ‘Invocation’ by the Reverend David Hawke from Canungra Uniting Church. The two School Captains from Canungra State School read the Remembrance Day Poem and had the honour of laying the first wreath. Our ‘Lone Piper’, Ms Bren Dalby, played the ‘Lament’ during the wreath laying ceremony and our bugler, Mr Tim Hunt, played the ‘Last Post’ and ‘Rouse’. The morning service concluded with the singing of the Canadian, New Zealand and Australian National Anthems and congratulations must go to Chris Duncan for singing all three anthems. Margaret Day assisted Chris when she joined in with the Canadian Anthem that she had only learnt a few days prior. The Canadians were remembered this year for their outstanding support when they teamed up with the Australians at the Battle of Amiens, an attack that commenced at 4.20am on 8th August 1918 and achieved immediate success. Nature’s Gems - Bali, From a Bird Watcher’s Perspective Earlier this year I travelled to Bali, Indonesia and onwards on my quest to see the mighty Komodo Dragons. After having an incredible trip looking at the Dragons, I arrived back in Bali on another wildlife mission. This time I was on the hunt for the Bali Starling, the national bird of Bali. Bali Starlings are critically endangered and I needed the help of a bird guide to see the species. Before leaving Australia, I contacted Hery Kusumanegara from Bali Birding Tour to organise a full day at the Bali Barat National Park looking for the Bali Starling. My day started bright and early leaving Denpasar at 3am with a driver from Bali Birding Tour who drove me the three hours to Bali Barat National Park for arrival at 6am. Upon meeting Hery, we climbed a
tower in the forest to watch the sunrise over the Bali Strait between Java and Bali. To my surprise, it did not take too long to see a flash of white over the treetops and I had seen my first Bali Starling! Bali Starlings are easily recognised by their stunning white plumage and blue eye ring. A captive breeding program is in place for the Bali Starling and birds get soft released into an area of Bali Barat National Park where local rangers are present to monitor to the birds. Currently, the birds are breeding very well and their population is increasing. The success of the birds’ increasing numbers is due to the dedication of the local rangers who also engage the community to provide information that the birds are protected and money generated from birdwatchers such as

The reality of modern day conservation is that local people must be engaged to protect threatened wildlife species and the habitat that they live in. A full day exploring around Bali Barat National Park yielded many bird species such as the Javan Banded Pitta, Laced Woodpecker, Sunda Scops Owl, Savannah Nightjar and Changeable Hawk-eagle. I also saw several species of primates and a beautiful Brown-backed Squirrel. Most people travel to Bali for the nightclubs and beaches. For me, it was all about seeing some of the natural wonders of Bali and I would totally recommend exploring Bali Barat National Park!

Those Flame Trees Brachychiton family - Family Malvaceae Genus: Brachychiton - Species: bidwillii, acerifolius, discolor, rupestris By Susan Cully The familiar red Flame Tree is well known and very flamboyant, lining the streets of Canungra. It has 30 family members, not quite so showy but beautiful as well as drought and frost tolerant. Drought tolerant because, like its bottle tree cousin, many trees in this family can store water in their trunks. An interesting identification tip for large trees in the forest is to tap on the trunk, instead of a solid ‘thunk’ they produce a reverberation that sounds just a bit like knocking on a water tank. Little Kurrajong (B bidwilli), blossoms are pink, the flower form is variable, it grows naturally from Boonah to Bowen. Northern variants producing great clusters of flower. Lacebark (B discolor), flowers are deep red, it grows in forests from Central NSW to South East Queensland. Flame Tree (B acerifolius), grows in forests all along the eastern coast from central NSW to Far Noth Queensland. B rupestris is the familiar bottletree with its ‘storage tank’ trunk. Many trees in this family are especially adapted to drought as they form a tuberous root at the same time as they produce their first true leaves, at about one month. Each of these trees can be grown in gardens and pruned to a suitable size for many years. They are semi-deciduous and make the most spectacular show in years that they flower on the naked tree, before leaves develop. These trees are easily grown from seed. Hands need to be protected from the very irritating hairs, best to ‘shell’ the pods wearing gloves. Grafting is also relatively easy enhancing the flowering capability with specimen selection.

News from St Luke’s By Di Ayscough What do we all wish for this Christmas? For some the wish-list may include money, a holiday, a new car or perhaps a vacuum cleaner. However, I am sure we would all include wishes and prayers for rain, an end to the bushfires and for good health. When you think about life and our desires, there is so much we all have in common and those things would include family and love. If you are worried about your special Christmas foods, we can help you! St Luke’s will be selling raffle tickets outside “FoodWorks” supermarket on Saturday the 7th and outside “The Butchery” on Saturday 14th December, between 8.00am and 12 Noon. There are three prizes with first prize being a Decorated Christmas cake, a Christmas pudding and a bottle of wine. Second prize is a $50 voucher to spend at the Butchery and a box of chocolates. Third prize is a bathroom pack including towels, hand towel and face washer along with soaps. Tickets are $1 each or six for $5. The raffle will be drawn at our Christmas Carols in the grounds of St Luke’s (opposite the local Hotel) on Wednesday 18th December commencing at 6.30pm. The Carols night is something to look forward to and a big draw card this year will be our special guest Stewart Morris. Stewart is a former member of the famous Ten Tenors, so we are really looking forward to a great night. Why not come along and enjoy Stewart’s amazing voice while at the same time enjoying the special atmosphere of our carols. There will be free cold water, free glow sticks and the drawing of our raffle prizes. Christmas Day Service at St Luke’s will be at 7.45am Wednesday 25th December and you are all welcome to attend. with Bren Dalby It is so good to see Moriarty Park, both inside and out , being utilised to best advantage and we thank you for you support in making this happen. Soccer will always be our main user group and this great Club can always do with a bit of help with various tasks, big or small, from the community, particularly those who have children playing here. A Club is only as good as the people who are involved, so please consider helping out in whatever way you can and ease the burden on the chosen few who end up doing way too much and spoiling the whole experience. Cameron Mansfield has recently taken on the role of President and he will do a top job ... but he canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t do it all so come on down and see what you might be able to do. We have Social Tennis on Tuesdays and sometimes Wednesdays from 5.30 pm, but you can play anytime for $6 an hour which can be dropped to any committee member. This is not ideal so a new online booking system is being worked towards with the help of Bendigo Bank and Scenic Rim Regional Council ... this will make life easier for all and hopefully get more people playing tennis! We also have Karate on Monday and Wednesday, Tae Kwon Do on Tuesday and Thursday, Yoga Monday morning, Scenic Rim Dog Sports on Tuesday and Saturday evenings, and other users in between times too so keep an eye out for whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s happening and come along! Cricket will be on 7th, 14th and 21st December, so pack an esky and have a relaxing arvo at Moriarty Park. We hold regular trivia nights and the occasional Bingo night which are a lot of fun and sponsored by the amazing Canungra FoodWorks. The next trivia night is Saturday 28th December â&#x20AC;&#x201C; see Moriarty Park Trivia Nights on Facebook for details. Time is 6pm for a 6.30pm kick off. Cost is $5 per person, maximum of six at a table, BYO drinks and nibblies â&#x20AC;Ś and a wee bit raffle money please. This time we are fundraising for Wildcare to continue to feed our local wildlife who are essentially starving. This is a magic community â&#x20AC;&#x201C; get involved guys (and gals)!
