John’s Journey: Fighting to Stay Alive During COVID By Keer Moriarty In March 2018, John Strickland was diagnosed with terminal liver cancer. It was a bitter blow for John and his partner, Suzi West, who own Cafe Metz in Canungra. Suzi says John was given less than three months to live. “They said we can’t operate, can’t give you any chemo, there’s nothing we can do.” “They didn’t even give him an oncologist.” Desperate, John and Suzi started researching treatments from around the world. “Immunotherapy kept coming up,” said John. John and Suzi were fortunate to speak to friends who recommended the Hallwang Clinic in Germany. The treatment had worked for their Aunt, but they were warned it would be very expensive. “He recommended it but said it was going to cost a lot of money,” said Suzi. “John and I put the house on the market and we were very blessed, the

house sold quickly and then we had the money for John to go.” The immunotherapy treatment available at the Hallwang Clinic is not available in Australia and John initially required treatment every six months. He travelled twice to Germany prior to COVID and twice last year during COVID. Suzi remains in Australia to run their business.

Applying to Travel Since COVID hit, John has to apply for special dispensation to travel and reenter Australia. He is due for treatment again this month, which again required a new application. John’s application to travel was initially denied by the Australian Border control authorities. When asked what will happen if he doesn’t get the treatment, John says with resignation, “Well, I’ll die, won’t I? I’m only here because of this treatment.” Advocacy by The Ca-

nungra Times, ABC and Federal Member, Scott Buchholz, saw the application reviewed and approved at the end of July.

Quarantine In July 2020, John lost six kilograms in hotel quarantine. While authorities were aware that he had special dietary requirements due to his illness and treatment, he says the food that was provided was not suitable – pies, cans of Coke, high carbohydrate laden meals, most of which was processed food. John applied to quarantine at home in July 2020, but the application was denied three times. Suzi said this was despite several high profile celebrities being able to home quarantine at the time. They have again applied for John to quarantine at home after the August trip to Germany, but it is unlikely this will be approved. Since 1 January 2021, 2,437 exemptions have been lodged under the Quarantine for International Arrivals direction.

HUMANS of CANUNGRA

Steve Noy

By Keer Moriarty Photography by Katherine O’Brien Photography

At the end of this interview I asked Steve Noy when he sleeps. You rarely meet someone so driven. At home on his property near Canungra he appears very relaxed for someone who runs two businesses, and looks after a variety of animals - including horses and buffaloes!

What do you do with the horses here? My daughter does trick riding. I do trick riding too, but it’s the Roman riding - so I ride two at once standing on them. And the buffalo? Ernie and Bert were in Hudson Circus but COVID hit and they got rid of most of their animals. I broke them in and, like the horses, they’ve been used in movies. But that’s not what you do in your business? My background is animals. I was a Polar Bear Keeper at Sea World. Wow! What are they like? Their intelligence is higher than primates. Keeping them in captivity is about providing them an enrichment program. Steve went to school in Woodridge until Year 11. He began his career with animals at Dreamworld. Can you tell me about Biodiversity Australia? I started BA in 2002 after a briefing about magpie management. They

wanted me to trial the trapping method to see if it would be useful instead of police shooting aggressive swooping magpies. It’s a scientific research program we’ve run since about 2004. We trap them, put a leg band on them. We relocate them 50 kilometres away. I’m a bit scared you’ll get calls from people asking you to relocate magpies... Probably, yes (laughs). Do they stop swooping once they’ve been relocated? About 80 per cent don’t reoffend. It is a very successful tool, otherwise you get people taking things into their own hands - slingshots, tennis racquets; we’ve seen it all. After that meeting I thought, ‘there’s an opportunity here’. I started doing it on weekends and also doing land clearing. I was still at Sea World and had 15 people working for me. I probably felt a bit insecure to step away

from being a wage earner. But I finally did and we’ve just grown. BA’s head office is at Coomera Waters, we’ve got an operational office/warehouse at Yatala, offices in Port Macquarie and Chinchilla, Darwin and Townsville. We’ve got about 80 employees. The other business, Noy Industries, fell off the back of BA. That is firearms and less lethal ammunition. What is less lethal? Rubber rounds, riot control stuff. Our clients are Australian Federal Police, correctional centres. The other side is our pyrotechnic ammunition, which is basically a firework in a 12 gauge round. We were using a product from Winchester called Bird Fright at airports and tips which was taken off the market. You pull the trigger, it goes up about 80 metres and goes bang and scares birds. A lot of our projects were priced on it, we needed

Steve Noy at his property outside Canungra. it. So I went to Google and started importing from Germany. We’re starting to educate farmers about our products. The old farmer thinks if they’re going to shoot something they’re going to kill it and the problem’s gone, but it’s not - more come in. You need to educate the animal to stay away. We’re slowly educating the new generation, they’re more science minded. Now I see how the businesses are related... I’m also heavily involved in the Indigenous business world. Do you think that’s changed over the last 10 years? Yes it has. We are getting traction but there’s

still a lot of stigma out there. We’re a very established company, BA, we’ve been around 20 years, we’ve got our ISO certifications, we work with corporates and Canberra. But the smartarse comments are still there. We hear them, we don’t focus on them, we don’t make a scene. We focus on the quality of the work. You’ve got an amazing story... I grew up in housing commission in Woodridge ... broken family, no money. I could have gone down a bad line. I’ve worked for everything I’ve got, like a lot of people. I like talking to people like that, because they’ve all got great stories.

Steiner School Proposed for Beechmont By Keer Moriarty A Gilston mother of three and teacher is investigating the establishment of a Steiner School at the Old School Site on Beechmont. Sarah Richards has approached the Beechmont Area Progress Association (BAPA) and Scenic Rim Regional Council about leasing the old Beechmont School building on the site. A Council spokesperson said BAPA has a management agreement with Council for the old Beechmont School, to manage the site as a community resource. “From time to time the Beechmont Area Progress Association approaches Council, as the landholder, to seek permission for certain uses.” “While Council is aware of the proposed

Steiner School, we’re yet to formally receive appropriate information from Beechmont Area Progress Association to properly assess such a request against the current approvals of the site.” BAPA Vice-President, Afra Hall-Beers confirmed the group is in discussions with Ms Richards to lease the Old School building to bring a Steiner School to Beechmont. “She’s a very calm, clear-headed and well-researched lady, who lives and breathes her belief in this educational system,” said Ms Hall-Beers. Both BAPA and Ms Richards were clear that the proposal is only for the Old School building, with Ms Richards stating that the rest of the site would still be able to be used by the community

The old school building on Beechmont. Photo: Evergreen Steiner School. under her proposal. “My intentions are genuine, I truly believe we can add so many positives to the Beechmont community, not take anything away from it,” said Ms Richards. If the proposal is suc-

cessful the school would open in 2022 for up to 15 students from Prep to Year 3 as a single composite class with one teacher. Concerns were raised on Facebook about how another school would

affect Beechmont State School numbers and funding. For more information contact Sarah Richards by email to info@evergreenschool.com.au or visit the evergreenschool. org web site.

DOES CANUNGRA NEED AN

Electric Car Charging Station? By Keer Moriarty An electric car charging station would open the town up to visitors with zero emission vehicles, says a local woman. Rachel McFadyen drives her Nissan Leaf between her homes in Brisbane and Kamarun Lookout, but stops at Yarrabilba to charge her vehicle. Rachel says a fast charging station would bring visitors to the town who would spend money while waiting for their cars to charge. “Electric Vehicle (EV) cars can be charged, though slowly, on any normal power point, so anyone staying in a motel or private house can

Page 6

charge their car overnight, but this is not available to day visitors,” she said. “As a result, owners of the smaller EV cars cannot visit tourist spots in the Scenic Rim for a day trip, because they can’t charge their car while there.” “It takes about half an hour for an EV to charge on a fast charge station and in that time people would have a coffee or lunch at a cafe and do some shopping. It would have a number of benefits.” A Scenic Rim Regional Council spokesperson said Council is investigating electric car charging stations across the region for incorporation in the Vibrant and

Rachel McFadyen with her Nissan Leaf. Active Towns and Villages program. “Council has applied for funding under a number of programs to incorporate electric car charging stations in the

region,” the spokesperson said. BP Canungra’s Andrew Covino said they have the underground infrastructure to install a fast charging unit, when

it is deemed to be financially viable. “This is something we would look at into the future, when there is a high enough demand for it.”

Be Part of the Regeneration Book

Authors, artists and photographers are being called to be part of the Regeneration Publication. The publication will bring together a collection of stories, poems, interviews, photographs, and artwork to become a record of the community’s experiences during the 2019 Black Summer bushfires. Coordinator, Jessica Brown said the publication will reflect how the community responded to the bushfires. The book will also feature artworks included in the Regeneration exhibition which will be held at The Centre, Beaudesert in September and October 2021. Jessica said the focus of the publication will be on resilience and recovery.

The Regeneration team are looking for: • Short stories (up to 1000 words); • Poetry (up to 1000 words); • Photographs; • Artwork. Beechmont artist Dave Groom’s Regeneration collection will feature in the book and the exhibition. “This body of work was done immediately after the fires. It was work that flowed out and was certainly a form of therapy for me,” he said. “Just about everyone in our community was affected in some way by the fires and many of us experienced a sense of loss and sadness. Having a way to make sense of this loss was a valuable thing.” “I have incorporated elements of fire in work

before, several times, but it was almost always as a background part of the story. An element that constantly appears in the natural landscape.” “This new work though, has the fire and its effects, more at the forefront. It was all I could think about at the time.” Due to limited space in the publication, selection will be based on several criteria: • Relevance to the theme of resilience, recovery and regeneration (50%); • Quality of creative submission (25%); • Residency 25% (Beechmont 10%, Scenic Rim 10%, residents from fire affected areas throughout Australia 5%). The Regeneration team will assess each submis-

Beechmont artist, Dave Groom’s Pod after the Fire from his Regeneration collection.. sion on this basis. They will not edit submissions but are happy to provide support if required. If you would like to

Doctors Get Online

Canungra’s doctors are taking a giant leap into the 21st Century by launching a new web site. The site will enable patients to book appointments online, which Canungra Valley Medical’s Practice Manager, Julie Halliday, says will be a convenient way for some patients to book in. “Rather than waiting until our opening hours, patients will be able to book an appointment online,” said Julie.

“Of course we will also take appointments over the phone, that certainly won’t change. This is an extra service we are offering, in line with many other modern surgeries.” The web site also provides information about the doctors who are available and their areas of special interest. Currently, Canungra Valley Medical has six doctors who are available on different days, with the practice open seven

days a week. On the web site, patients will be able to select the doctor they want and then choose an available time. The site also has a blog-style news feed. The new web site is another big move for Canungra Valley Medical who moved to new premises earlier this year. Visit the new web site now to book an appointment at canungramedicalcentre.com.au.

A spider web, jungle gym and swings are just a few of the new big-ticket items which have been unveiled by Council at the upgraded Tamborine Memorial Hall Playground. Scenic Rim Regional Council Division 2 Councillor Jeff McConnell said the upgrades were sure to be a hit. “This will be a great asset for the local community because it’s a brand-new playground for young and old to enjoy,” he said. “There’s lots of things for kids to climb, and an all-abilities bird’s nest swing which allows for easy transfer from a

wheelchair or walker.” “This will make Tamborine Memorial Hall Playground more inviting for locals and visitors, and with the recent refurbishment of the tennis courts, the toilets and the hall, this will greatly improve the social infrastructure of the Tamborine area.” Council collaborated with the Tamborine District Citizens Association and the Tamborine Memorial Hall Management Committee to bring together ideas for the design of the new playground to better suit the needs of local families.

Canungra Service Station Changes

A nation-wide change to the Caltex brand has seen the Canungra Service station next to Foodworks undergo rebranding to Ampol. Caltex announced two years ago that it would transition its name to Ampol, starting in 2020. Manager Lynda Radunz said the service station is still owned by the same family-owned company, Lahey and Walker, which is based in Beaudesert and has had connections with Canungra for several generations. It is business as usual for all customers, including StarCard customers.

Hobbs get plug on Farmer Wants a Wife By Susie Cunningham

Jacqui Faulkner, pictured at the Hobbs’ property. Photo: Amy Mckay, Studio Birdie.

Local power couple, Nikki and Luke Hobbs, have received a plug on national television hit, Farmer Wants a Wife. Contestant Jacqui Faulkner, who is the talented photographer behind Hobbs Building and Interiors, proudly wore her ‘Hobbs’ trucker cap on episode seven of the reality TV show. Ms Faulkner, 28, manages the family’s Kooralbyn horse stud, Kellarni Downs, and runs her

own local photography business, Kellarni Creative. In November last year, she quietly slipped away from her local work duties for the filming of Farmer Wants a Wife season 11, which aired on television in July. Ms Faulkner was brought in as an ‘intruder’ to the show, entering a household of women hoping to find a romantic connection with Victorian cattle farmer, Matt. While she didn’t find a romantic spark, she made meaningful friend-

ships with fellow contestants. Ms Faulkner said her biggest inspirations were her grandparents and her friends and photography clients, the Hobbs. “Nikki and Luke are a good example of a nice relationship. Obviously, everyone has their arguments, but they work together and live together and support each other,” she said. “They’re one another’s biggest fans and Nikki always laughs about this, but when she has a bad day, Luke’s the

first one to bring her a little glass of wine. Even if he’s had a bad day, too, he still just makes sure he looks after Nikki, and vice versa.” Ms Faulkner said she looked forward to finding her special someone. “I’d love to find someone who’s family oriented, kind, understanding, supportive, down to earth, someone that can help fix a fence,” she said. “I’m not too fussy, I don’t think – just kindness, that’s the most important thing.”

It’s All About the Beef

The Prime Beef Classes at Beaudesert Show highlight the history of the region as a cattle growing area. Prime Beef Classes are divided into two parts - the Carcass Classes which are held at Highchester prior to the Show; and Hoof Classes. Both sections give local graziers the opportunity to showcase the quality of their cattle in the area that they are truly bred for - eating. The Carcass Classes are judged on how the meat looks on the hook, according to AUS MEAT specifications. AUS MEAT is the regulatory body for the meat industry in Australia. The cattle are slaughtered at Highchester Meats prior to these classes, with judging taking place the next day. In the Hoof Classes the

animals are judged on the cattle’s weight, condition and conformation. All cattle must be in the hands of the stewards by 4pm Thursday 2 September, for judging to commence at 6.30am Friday 3 September. No cattle will be accepted for penning on Friday morning. Cattle will remain at the Show Grounds until 1pm on the Saturday of the Show. Cattle entered in the Hoof Classes are weighed on arrival at the showground. The full weight is recorded and then taken and used for entry to relevant classes and given as a guide only for any future transactions at point of sale. Cattle will be sold through open auction by Goetsch & Sons, Hayes & Co, Shepherdson & Boyd Qld Pty Ltd, Elders, Nutrien Ag Solu-

tions or Gilliland Livestock Marketing. It is essential for all exhibitors to nominate the selling agent on entry forms. If more than one agent is nominated, the exhibitor must specify the animals to be allocated to preferred agents. All stock in the Hoof Classes will be sold at auction. However, the owner reserves the right to buy back his or her cattle. All exhibits must be bona-fide property of the exhibitor for sixty days prior to the closing date for entries. Proof of ownership may be required. Entry forms are available in the Beaudesert Show Schedule or online at beaudesertshow.org.au For enquiries about Prime Beef classes, contact Chief Steward, Dale Farmers on 5541 1906 or 0408 403 618.

FOCUS ON LOCAL BUSINESS

Let the Showroom Come to You!

Scott and Julia Knoll had been looking for a local business for some time when the Andersens franchise in Beaudesert caught their eye. Julia’s background as a Production Estimator in the construction industry, combined with Scott’s experience in marketing convinced them that Andersens was the ideal business for the Tamborine Village based couple. “We have been looking to buy a business in the area since we moved here about five years ago. We liked the ethos of Andersens as well as the location,” said Scott. “We really value home town, country service this is a great area and reminds me of my childhood, growing up in a country town.” On 21 May Scott and Julia took over the business from David and Toni Jones, who owned An-

dersens Beaudesert for the past 14 years. It has been a welcome lifestyle change for the new owners who have enjoyed meeting their customers and settling into their business as they celebrate the shop’s 30th anniversary. Scott has spent much of his time out on the road in the showroom on wheels, doing quotes and estimates - a service they provide for free. “The showroom on wheels is our Andersens van which holds a huge range of carpet, vinyl and timber samples,” said Scott. “Customers can expect a fresh, enthusiastic approach with the same friendly customer service and quality workmanship.” “This saves people from having to come into the shop - they can see what they like from

Scott and Julia Knoll with Andersens’ Showroom on Wheels. the comfort of their own home.” Scott and Julia say they will continue to use the same installation contractors who have been doing a great job for many years for locals. They are excited to be part of Andersens and

celebrating the 30th Anniversary of the store. “We’re here to look after our customers - we care about keeping people happy and providing personal service.” American-born Scott then says with a smile, “I’d like people to come

in and say G’day!” Andersens is offering free installation of carpet during the month of August - drop in and see Scott and Julia at 16 William Street, Beaudesert or phone 5541 1191 to have the showroom come to you.

BARRIERS REMOVED

A long wait by residents for TMR to adjust guard rails on Beaudesert Nerang Road to accommodate wildlife came to an end at the beginning of August. Residents have been lobbying TMR to put wildlife friendly spaces in the new guardrails after a sharp increase in wildlife deaths. Approximately three

animals a week have been killed on the stretch of road since the new guardrails were installed, with more calls for injured animals. Wildlife carers said they had no space to safely pull over when on rescues and animals were unable to go through or over the guard rails. After a long investigation into the issue TMR

began work to change the guard rails on Monday 2 August. Wildlife carer, Bren Dalby was advised by residents that the work was underway. “I’m so relieved, I can’t stop crying,” said Bren. She thanked everyone who advocated for the changes to be made.

Regeneration Exhibition at The Centre

An exhibition of creative works arising from the September 2019 bushfires will be on display at The Centre, Beaudesert in September and October 2021.

The fires left homes, farmland, bushland, business and spirits charred. After the fire, communities were firstly numb with shock and grief over what had been lost, but

this was transformed into a determination to both rebuild and honour resilience as a way to learn from the experience. The lived experience of fire ignited a deeper understanding of human connection and belonging to place. This sense of belonging and connection has been celebrat-

ed through community initiatives and projects such as the Regeneration - Bushfire Creative Recovery Project. Regeneration is an exhibition that is witness to recovery while paying respect to the transformational quality of fire. Local artists impacted by Black Summer will

showcase their work and tackle themes of belonging and regreening, recovery, resilience, and regeneration of our human and nonhuman communities. A Meet the Artists event is on Saturday 11 September at 10.30am. For bookings visit liveatthecentre.com.au.

The footpath about to be constructed around the top of Beechmont is a mostly insane waste of money. We first heard of this part of the 10 year plan this week and it has shocked us that council would go ahead with a project that is the least of our priorities. While I clearly haven’t spoken to all the concerned people who live on the route of this useless footpath, I have spoken to a lot. And you are not being honest about how many people want this footpath. An all-weather track to the school from the ends of Jervis and Acacia Courts is a much needed and sensible amenity, with path from the school to the bridge and maybe a safe track along Beechmont Road to the corner of McInnes Court. But a concrete walkway down our very quiet and safe streets, cul de sacs, is a total waste of money money that could be put to use for the whole of the community, or even a skate park which the community has been pushing for for years. We recognise the need

for an all-weather track to the school where the planned footpath can go along the easement from the end of the two cul de sacs. However, there is no reason to aggravate the residents with something they actively don’t want. I live in Acacia Court, a quiet cul de sac with plenty of trees planted along the very neatly maintained grass verge. The trees are now about 12 or 13 years old and doing nicely. People occasionally walk along the road, mostly with their dogs (off and on leash). Wallabies cross the road regularly, cars stop occasionally to talk to a neighbour or wait for the ducks to cross. It’s a pretty busy place but not so much - you get the picture. Maybe 16 houses all told in the entire street. We do not want our trees chopped down and a concrete strip laid down in front of our homes. There is no need. No desire. And it’s a waste of our money. Not to mention the mess the construction will make (that is almost not important). And on closer inspection,

a concrete path crossing our gravel driveways is not going to work. The gravel will wash away at any rain event causing constant renewal of driveway gravel. The so-called ‘consultation’ currently underway by the head of civil engineering has admitted the Council has already decided to go ahead with the footpath saga and that it’s a ‘done deal’ -- because there is no point asking people what they want. There actually IS a point - you could get some idea of the true needs of this community. If we had known what was in your “ten year plan”, we could have told you that. It’s no point advertising Beechmont community meetings in the Beaudesert Times as we don’t get it up here. We don’t have a shop. We have one four day licensed coffee shop and one other café that would like to be licensed. Nothing else, as I’m sure you must be aware. We don’t need a concrete footpath in our rural, residential streets. Sincerely, Marie Robb, Beechmont

By Christine Tod, Beechmont Landcare In June the Beechmont Landcare shed, located at 6 Binna Burra Road, had a huge makeover thanks to Regeneration – Creative Bushfire Recovery Project. It now features a painting of a huge Richmond Birdwing Butterfly (RBWB) superimposed on the mountainous landscape emblematic of this area. Participating in the great community effort to conserve the RBWB has been an enduring aim of Beechmont Landcare ever since the Department of Environment and Science, in conjunction with the Richmond Birdwing Conservation Network, initiated a project to help preserve the species in 2008. President of BDLA, Susan Cully has written about it numerous times in this paper. The shed motif is a fitting tribute to Beechmont Landcare’s contribution to the survival of

this magnificent creature. If residents want to help with this conservation effort the best thing they can do is plant the vine that the RBWB larvae exclusively eat. Its botanical name, Pararistolochia praevenosa, is a bit of a mouthful but most people who sell it know it as the Birdwing Butterfly Vine. A quick search of the internet will reveal local retailers and it can even be successfully purchased online and sent through the mail. It is also worth trying Mark Henderson at the Beechmont Market and also BDLA sometimes has them to give away. To finish the new look, the shed will soon have a new sign. Details such as Facebook presence and email address are being added so that community members know how to follow us and keep in touch.

The Beechmont Area Progress Association (BAPA), is planning to extend the deck around to the east in the coming year to enable more al fresco dining and facilitate larger community gatherings. Canungra’s History The Canungra & District Historical Society is now officially up and running as part of the Canungra community! We have been a working group for several years while we were working towards incorporation. Our permanent headquarters is a small building in the Canungra Sports and Recreation Grounds in Coburg Road. Interestingly, the Lahey family (who created Canungra around their sawmill 1884 – 1936), from the earliest days reserved this area for recreation purposes. There are many pieces of our history to share such as: An 1893 memory of coming from near Beenleigh to play cricket; the younger adults play-

End Of An Era

2032 Olympic And Paralympic Games

It has been with great sadness that we all as residents of the area acknowledge the very sad passing of John Wilson from Canungra Pharmacy who has attended to his much loved community with such kindness and caring over many years. John was one of life’s true gentlemen who was always ready to chat with his customers and I know our hearts and thoughts go out to John’s wife Jo and his family. This is the end of an era in Canungra. I did send John and his family a letter on behalf of our community both past and present on his recent retirement and sale of the pharmacy, thanking him for his incredible contribution to the health and wellbeing of so many

Following this recent announcement of the successful bid for Brisbane, Scenic Rim will also get an opportunity to shine on the global stage with Lake Wyaralong being chosen to host both rowing and canoeing events. The South East Queensland Mayors initiated the journey back in 2015. This world event will have numerous advantages not only for our region but for Queensland and Australia with infrastructure upgrades and tourism and social benefits. You can follow the updates on Council’s website https://www. scenicrim.qld.gov.au/homepage/198/2032-olympic-games and see the video clip of Lake Wyaralong that helped clinch

the deal.

Four Million Dollar Stimulus Funding Our region will benefit from this recent funding announcement under the Queensland Governments 2021-2024 South East Queensland Community Stimulus program. The primary goal of this funding is to stimulate employment by supporting projects that will have lasting value to communities and stimulate economic development. The projects are spread widely through the region.

Urban Utilities Visit I have been advised that Urban Utilities officers will be visiting Canungra on Saturday 14 and Sunday 15 August with a “pop up” information stand in D J Smith Park. They will also be addressing the Canungra Chamber of Commerce that week in conjunction with SEQ Water officers.

COUNCIL WATCH WITH AMANDA HAY

Email: frangipani1956@msn.com The following are my views, not those of the Editor. Any threats of legal action can be directed to me.

Brickbat “Nature-based Tourism” is currently the catch-all categorisation within the Scenic Rim Planning Scheme 2020 for developers seeking to obtain approval for a tourist venture based on cabins and overnight accommodation, the definition being so broad that it captures any proposed development located in “an area of environmental, landscape, scenic or heritage value” or “a place of local interest”. In other words, a view is sufficient. This is creating tension between existing

Page 26

residents and developers. Two such developments on Tamborine Mountain - public submissions now closed are for a Japanese-style “onsen” and five cabin development on land zoned Rural Residential A on the western escarpment, and for a further intensification of a tourist activity (approved three bedroom B&B/Reception Centre/Food Establishment) to include a further six buildings accommodating 10 lettable spaces (cabins), on land zoned Rural. This is within the Escarpment Protection Precinct with a target market of 75%

overseas tourists. The consequences of open slather developments of this type are significant – and this could happen near you. Significantly, on page 24 of the SRRC Draft Adventure and Nature-Based Tourism Strategy, under 8 Monitoring Framework, it is stated that “there is no guarantee of future industry growth as numerous market dynamics are beyond the control of the Scenic Rim Regional Council and individual operators in the region.” Perhaps all the more reason to focus on promoting awareness of existing offerings rather than flooding an untested and unquantified local market? See link to registered Air B&Bs on Tamborine Mountain – over-supply, perhaps? Queensland Globe (information.qld. gov.au) (accept the terms and conditions and click “get started”).

Has three months to respond. • MCU20/133 – 7-39 Finch Rd Canungra. “Over 50s lifestyle village”. 25 public submissions lodged.

Court Cases involving SRRC: One new case filed in July 2021 involving

an application to vary a previous commercial groundwater extraction court order from 2016. Updates: P&E Court: 518/21 – SRRC v Qld Heritage Council (Pig & Calf Saleyards heritage listing). Court review date: 25 August 2021. Supreme Court 13762/19: Scenic Rim Developments P/L -vSRRC following a “Decision on Papers” court event on 22 July 2021, an order for a review on 24 Sept 2021 was issued. As this is now a “supervised case”, it will come under greater court scrutiny. In addition to the above, SRRC is currently listed in five further matters in August 2021: one directions hearing, three reviews and one pre-callover review.

GROW YOUR OWN with

Bill O’Sullivan

TULLAMORE FARM We grow a lot of different fruits and vegetables here at Tullamore Farm. Amongst our favourites are those that bring back fabulous memories from childhood - Sugarcane, Mulberries, Mandarins and other fruit trees that were in Grandma’s backyard. Think Stringy Mangoes and the Loquat. As a child growing up, Loquats were still quite common in gardens and my grandma had one. You don’t seem to see them like you did as a child 50 years ago. You rarely see Loquats in shops but the fruit tastes great and most who are familiar with them like the taste. From planting you are looking at between three

and seven years to fruiting, depending on the starting tree and how ideal your conditions are. We have seven loquats here and they do well in the Scenic Rim. Ours have started fruiting at about the four to five year mark and they become quite prolific. The tree itself is quite ornamental as well as practical. Loquat trees make excellent lawn trees, with whirls of glossy foliage and a natural attractive shape. They can grow to about seven metres tall with a canopy that spreads four to six metres. We prune ours to maintain a nice shape and keep them manageable for fruit harvesting. The large clusters of

attractive fruit stand out against the dark green leaves. Once established they are quite drought tolerant. Probably why Grandma had one. They are not overly hungry and once we have them established, we only fertilise them once a year in November. When they are still small fruit trees we fertilise them more often. They flower in winter and set the fruit in spring and early summer. The two pictured both flowered for the first time last year but with the drought didn’t set fruit. With a nice wet period behind them now, we are really hoping for a good crop in spring and some very serious reminiscing.

Loquats take three to seven years for fruiting. Page 28

Red-Backed Brood Frog By Susan Cully Also known as the Red-backed Toadlet (coriacea ie- thick and leathery), this frog is common throughout our district. It is an endemic (found only in) Australian frog. A group of frogs known as ‘brood’ frogs are grouped according to their breeding habit, they appear to cover and care for their eggs in a ‘nest’, a sheltered pocket in the leaf litter. Normally their habitat can be found in areas that are regularly flooded: roadside ditches, creeks and areas prone to inundation. They breed and deposit their spawn in soaks and puddles in the leaf litter where they are ‘guarded’ by the adult frog, sitting next to or often on top of the nest. When heavy rain inundates their eggs, temporary pools are formed, hatching is stimulated and tadpoles emerge. The tadpoles develop quickly to take advantage of the passing flood event. It is this ad-

aptation to living in dry forests that has enabled them to escape a dependence on water, taking advantage of intermittent conditions so common in Australia. Successful metamorphosis (tadpole to adult frog) is completed before these pools dry up. An adult Red-backed Brood Frog reaches a length of about 35mm. The colour of these frogs varies but most commonly the back is orange red. Arms and legs display orange or red patches with grey or black undersurfaces. If the frog is viewed from below, the underside displays a very striking set of black and white barred patterns. There is a dark line down the entire side of the frog, starting from the nostril, separating the back from the strongly marbled black and white belly. There is a white spot in the pits. Fingers and toes are unwebbed, without discs. The call of the males is “ark”. They are found along the coast and ranges of eastern Australia, from Sydney to Southeast Queensland.

SPINE MISALIGNMENT By Alison Ford

What is Misalignment of the Spine? Maybe you woke up with a stiff neck. Maybe by the end of the day you get sore but you’re OK after a rest. Maybe if you sit for longer than 30 minutes you have low back pain. Maybe you just can’t exercise anymore ‘cos it hurts’ but you don’t know why. Your spine may be ‘out of line’ from one or more of your vertebrae being pulled slightly out of position. An injury - possibly one of the many falls you had in childhood - is often the reason, but inactivity, obesity, and poor posture are also reasons your spine may have alignment issues. Over time some of your vertebrae may move slightly out of their optimal position. These minimal displacements can be significant as your gross movement patterns alter and adhesions (scar tissue) may form in the lig-

aments surrounding your vertebrae. Also, the bands of connective tissues (fascia) throughout your body will be unevenly strained and the discs between your vertebrae will wear unevenly. This is where a Physiotherapy Assessment is needed. In our process of assessment we will ascertain where your misalignments are and what is causing them. We’ll watch you move, checking out your larger muscle groups and fascial movements for imbalances and check your spinal and peripheral joints for restrictions. We will then advise the best way forward for you according to evidence-based practices. That may initially be treatment in the traditional sense or it may be with exercise to help re-align, stretch or strengthen your spine to address your alignment issues.

PET OF THE MONTH Meet this Handsome Fluff-Ball! Meet Pablo, the most handsome fluff-ball you will ever meet! Although he is irresistibly cute and a lot of people’s idea of a dream dog, he also is a breed worth researching first! They are strongwilled, independent thinkers and very intelligent, and fun fact, unlike their racing cousins they were built for heavy freighting and therefore, his strength and endurance is second to none! Because of this, Pablo is in fact a working dog and will require daily mental and physical stimulation - how about joining one of the local Malamute meet up groups for some fun adventures! Let’s not forget about that magnificent coat of his that requires regular brushing and grooming to promote healthy skin. Pablo does get on with doggy pals, but due to his size and lively nature it may be a little overwhelming for them,

Pablo is very intelligent and super fluffy! so it’s best if you have a dog at home you’re wanting to introduce Pablo to they should come along and meet him here in the shelter. He loves toys and his favourite game is fetch, but his favourite thing would have to be getting out for his daily walks, it makes him so happy! If you love the great outdoors and love being active, then Pablo would be your perfect match - he would be keen for those early morning jogs and hiking trips.

NATURE’S GEMS Banded Whiteface

Aphelocephala nigricincta

By Melissa Whitby This year I have been doing a lot of exploring in my own backyard due to not being able to travel overseas. Last year I travelled all over Queensland, but I missed my opportunity to travel to Birdsville due to heavy rains and roads being cut. It made me determined to get to Birdsville in 2021 and last month I did just that. The desert dunes around Birdsville are incredible places to see wildlife, especially birds. I have been lucky enough to see most bird species around Birdsville but that had been nearly 20 years ago when I did not have a camera. This time I came prepared and one bird that I encountered was the Banded Whiteface. This small bird is intricately marked for an arid zone dweller and the easiest way to recognize one is by its small size and bold black band across the chest. The head, back and rump area of the Banded Whiteface are sandy-brown in colour. The Banded Whiteface has a range that extends through the arid zones of Queensland, Northern Territory, South Australia and Western Australia. Around Birdsville, the only other bird it may be

mistaken for is the Southern Whiteface. However, the Southern Whiteface is duller in colour and lacks the dark black band across its chest. The areas that the birds frequent around Birdsville are sand dunes with sparse shrubs and canegrass. Depending on the conditions, the birds are relatively common and if one is familiar with their calls, it should not be too hard to find them. I only saw one or two small groups on this trip. They were quite vocal and only sat for a short time before they moved on. These small birds will nest whenever the conditions are suitable after rain and the nest is domed in shape and made out of small sticks.

My birdwatching around Birdsville also revealed Budgerigars, Wedge-tailed Eagles, Cinnamon Quail-thrush and Eyrean Grasswren. Some of these birds I found at different stages of nesting and the rain that passed through just after I left will provide a good breeding season for these species. Desert birdwatching is very different to here on the coast and I would suggest for anyone who is about to head out into the desert, it is worth doing some homework on what bird species you may see. You will definitely not be disappointed. I loved my desert trip so much this year, I think I might just have to go back next year as well!

COUNCIL COMMENT

These are my own personal views. I do not purport to speak on behalf of Council.

Tamborine Playground The new upgraded playground at the Tamborine Memorial Hall is finally opened and is already a huge success with the local children. The new equipment includes more climbing and coordination structures as well as a bird’s nest swing for the younger kids. We have also placed some sandstone blocks closer to the playground for the parents to sit on.

Grants At the 20 July Ordinary Council meeting we detailed the approval of over $7.6 mil in grants from the SEQ Community Stimulus Program and the Local Economic

Recovery Program from Federal and State Governments. Of note is that $4.3 mil of that funding is for projects on Tamborine Mountain including the refurbishment of the old IGA into a new Community Hub and Library and major upgrades to the Vonda Youngman Centre. This is a great outcome for the Scenic Rim and all the projects can be seen on Council’s website.

Budget Council has adopted its 2021-2022 Budget and again it was a difficult task of managing the needs of the Community for more services and better roads and the need to improve the working of Council. This year we

published the new initiatives as a separate attachment to the Budget so that the additional spending was more open. I would just like to correct some misinformation in regard to the increase. When we talk about a 3% increase it is not an increase in your rates but an increase in the rates revenue to be collected.

Wonglepong CWA I was privileged to be invited to attend the Wonglepong CWA annual meeting in July and was thrilled to talk with

Cr Jeff McConnell with Tamborine Memorial Hall President Nicole Pardilanan at the Tamborine Memorial Hall Playground. all the ladies about the selfless devotion to community they have. This is something that is lacking across some of Austra-

lia’s communities and these ladies are a shining light as to how we should strive to be a benefit to the people around us.

CONTACT ME I am always available to talk directly with residents by telephone on my mobile 0436 327 434 or email jeff.m@scenicrim.qld.gov.au. Follow me on Facebook – Jeff McConnell Councillor for Division 2 Scenic Rim Regional Council. I am happy to meet with anyone who requests a meeting.

News from St Luke’s By Di Ayscough

Last month I wrote about “Inspiration” and uplifting the mind in spirit. This month I cannot help but think about disappointment and determination. I am sure we are all disappointed that COVID-19 is not under control to the point to let us get on with our normal lives. Maybe you too are disappointed by the behaviour of those protesting in our capital cities over the lockdowns. After all, what will the outcome of such actions lead to? At St Luke’s we have just said goodbye to Fr Ken who has been with us for twenty-one months as the locum, and while we are sad to see him go, we know God will provide for us. We will not be disappointed. We have the faith to know God will soon bring us a leader and, in the meantime, we hold together all that we believe in so St Luke’s remains strong and determined. Such determination is witnessed in our ongoing support for the State School Chaplain, for Little Lukies every Monday after school, for our efforts to raise funds to maintain our building and for our strong beliefs that God will never forsake us. We have just been fortunate enough to run the Saturday Sausage Sizzle at Bunnings in Nerang. This not only raised important funds but gave us visibility in the community. We continue to raise funds to help in our community and for our visibility. We will be at the Canungra Show and our Annual dinner in August will help with the maintenance of our building. Yes, disappointment can be part of our vocabulary but we can sing with joy over all the good things. Do you ever feel disappointed and saddened with people or life? Consider visiting St Luke’s, there are so many good things happening. You may be surprised at how much better you feel after talking with God.

SPORT

CANUNGRA AREA GOLF CLUB By Kim Sami Pennant golf is well underway with Canungra represented in both the Gold Coast District Golf Association and the Women’s Golf Gold Coast. The Canungra Ladies hosted the inaugural Country Mouse/Town Mouse Trophy event on Tuesday 13 July with 31 ladies from the Southport Golf Club competing against 11 Canungra ladies and enjoying a French Themed, fun day of competition, delightful food and loads of laughter.

Thank you to Canungra Beauty, The Shoe Vault, Precious Cargo, Limes 4 U and all of our amazing helpers who pulled together an amazing day. Funds were raised for Legacy from the sale of home grown produce. Following the golf, the Southport ladies got their bus driver to detour into Canungra to visit a couple of the local businesses before heading back home. Did I mention ~ Canungra won the trophy!

Moriarty Park and Canungra Owls Soccer News With Bren Dalby

Our new notice board should be here soon, courtesy of Bendigo Bank, so everyone can see what’s on offer and when. It will be on the wall upstairs near the verandah gate. We have recently applied for an Australia Post Community grant to have a super First Aid kit and defibrillator on site and will have the defibrillator situated on the verandah where it can be accessed by anyone who needs it. Just for the record, there is a defibrillator outside the Bendigo Bank.

Eat Local Week The Eat Local Week Food Trucks event on 27 June was terrific and a big thank you goes out to Matt and Kat from The Design Collective for putting it all together – they found the super band, Blue Persuasion who everyone I spoke to thought were fabulous, so look out for those guys who have been invited back for a big ‘doo’ in October for Turning Canungra Pink. Talking of which, make sure you find out what’s on and fill up your diaries with spectacular

and varied events! Canungra Hotel helped us out with supply and return of the bar supplies which made life easier and did it all at short notice as local wineries and breweries were hoped to be there showcasing their special products but that sadly didn’t come to fruition! From our committee, Peter, Julie, Toby, and Sarah worked their butts off and the always amazing Bronwyn Brown came to assist in the bar and beyond! Roped in my daughter Rowan and her man, Levi, too so a massive thanks to all involved in pulling off another great community day out and raising close to $4,000 for our Skatepark Fund. Many didn’t pop in a dollar to the donation bucket, for whatever reason, but many more gave very generously and that is so appreciated; thank you. Over $800 was collected in those buckets!

Trivia Trivia will next be on Saturday 14 August, at 6pm for 6.30pm kick off. Cost is $5 per person with a maximum six at a

table but you don’t need a full table and can join with others if you wish. BYO nibblies and drinks but there will be some refreshments in the fridge for purchase too. Trivia is sponsored by Canungra Foodworks and the funds raised go to local causes in need and will be announced on the night. The following Trivia will be on Friday 10 September (assuming no other function is booked on that night between now and then so keep an eye out on Foodworks noticeboard, Canungra Times and hopefully our own noticeboard by then).

Sportsperson of the Month We have had a tremendous number of Sportspeople in the area achieving amazing results of late and are delighted to welcome to the fold of Sportspersons of the Month: Kai Crothers – Frame Running; Corey Nicholson – Muay Thai and Cooper MacKenzie – all-rounder sportsperson. We will showcase these talented locals in

the next edition of The Canungra Times. Any nominations for Sportsperson of the Month please to Bren 0414 435 919 / bren.dalby@bigpond.com. We have run the Foodworks Sportsperson of the Year Awards for many years now and to see the plaque at Moriarty Park Hall is inspirational; so many locals and such a variety of codes. The awards ceremony is held early February with a $50 Foodworks Voucher and a $50 sports shop voucher for each month’s nominated sportsperson. Moriarty Park meetings are generally held on the third Monday of the month at 6.45pm and all are welcome (we have just had our AGM so you can attend safely lol!).

Owls Soccer Our Men’s Wednesday night Metro team had a tremendous and convincing win on 28 July against Runaway Bay! Terrifically entertaining game and a lot of happy players to be cheered on and congratulated by

the super large crowd of supporters! Well done guys! Look out for hopefully a home Semi-Final coming up soon! Kellie and family ran a terrific canteen with Rib Fillet burgers and a few curries, as well as our canteen other faves; the aroma was divine. Kellie Pickering runs a tight ship in the canteen and puts in many hours, and her family are often there to assist; be sure to thank her when you pick up your delicious meal at the Semi Final! Thank you to Foodworks for not only being our major sponsor but supplying the ingredients to make our canteen the best! We still have some catch up games to play for competition teams in particular, although we are luckier than some as we play when it rains as long as the fields are ‘playable’! Keep an eye out for the last few games of the season and come along to support our local players and indeed a super Club.
